file businesses. Miami is one of the nation's hotspots of wireless networking, and that makes it a target for personal and business data theft. A recent article in Miami Monthly Magazine highlighted the work done by Ilan Sredni of Palindrome Consulting, an Aventura IT consulting firm. Sredni reported a typical case of a Brickell area office, which realized that their network had been hacked, and data hijacked. "Our technicians were able to penetrate their wireless network in under eight minutes," Sredni stated. "And their

security was better than most!" For the past nine years, Sredni's Palindrome Consulting has been providing computer networking services, server monitoring, and corporate data security to Aventura businesses, developing an expertise in protecting their clients' data and systems as the problem of internal and external theft worsened. Alarmed by this persistent problem, Sredni put together a panel of experts, including the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's office, the head of security for the NAP of the Americas, and a bank computer security expert to alert local businesses on how to determine if their data has been compromised. The panel will also focus on how to prevent problems from happening, what steps businesses can take to do a selfassessment of their security level, and how businesses can avoid becoming a victim of cyber crime, either from external sources, or malicious or careless employees. Aventura area businesses are invited to hear this panel, moderated by William Plasencia of WPA Consulting, and pick up literature on preventing computer security problems, at a free breakfast at 8 a.m. on December 11th, at the Doubletree Ocean Point Resort & Spa, at 17375 Collins Avenue, courtesy of Palindrome Consulting, and the law firm of Perlman, Yevoli & Albright. Hebrew Homes gets nod from FEMA for aid offer BY LYNN CARROLL For offering assistance to victims of three recent hurricanes, Hebrew Homes Plaza Health Network has been formally thanked by U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency officials. FEMA agents are contacting the charitable nonprofit to aid victims of hurricanes Fay, Hanna, and Ike whose needs fit the kind of help the Hebrew Homes Plaza Health Network extends. "Should there be a need to relocate medically frail and infirm elderly who have been displaced by these storms, we are here to assist," said Hebrew Homes Plaza Health Network Board Secretary & Treasurer Elliot Kalus. "It is the right and responsible thing to do, and is consistent with our network's core values of providing the right care at the right time in the right place, with dignity and respect." He said the network made the same offer following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and was subsequently honored to

serve three individuals from the Gulf Coast states. This year's formal acknowledgement and thanks were extended to the Hebrew Homes Plaza Health Network by Demetria Carter, branch chief of acquisition policies and legislation support in FEMA's Office of Acquisition Management. "As we did in 2005," Carter wrote, "the agency appreciates the generous offer from Plaza Health's not-for-profit network. Much as we did after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, when the Hebrew Homes Plaza Health Network offered its services to a number of elderly disaster victims, FEMA will examine the need of current victims and, should the need fit, contact you once again for assistance." Plaza Health Network is a cooperative effort involving eight rehabilitation and nursing centers in Miami-Dade County. Combined, these centers serve more than 800 medically frail and infirm elderly residents and their families. For more information, (305) 917-0400.

Why is there no fix to credit card mess Al Sunshine 4 YOUR MONEY I just received this email from a viewer and I thought I would pass it along: It asked, “Why did we bail out the banks, when all they have done is turned around and increased the credit card percentages to the max. My card went from a 12 percent to 29 percent just because I was a day late. Why doesn’t this government go after these banks? When I explained that I couldn’t afford to pay what they were asking, but I was willing to pay a certain amount, they stated that they could do nothing about it. “The coldness of these banks doesn’t merit them getting bailed out. That is why most customers just go into bankruptcy! It’s not that they don’t want to pay; it’s just that what they are asking, most people don’t even make in a week.” The message is probably similar to what you or a friend may be experiencing. During good times, the banks flooded us with credit card applications. And admittedly, we probably opened way too many credit card accounts than we should have. However, the banks probably sent out way too many applications than they should have. Overwhelming credit card debt doesn’t happen overnight and isn’t an accident. The banks are just as guilty for purveying loose credit standards to credit-addicted consumers who can’t stop ringing up more debt than they can afford. So why are the banks suddenly adding on all these extra charges… and why isn’t anything being done about it? First and foremost, the banks are losing billions of dollars because they loaned money to people they shouldn’t have. They’re looking to boost their earnings as much as possible and we’re the only ones they can hit with bigger bills. Second, the rules governing how credit cards are regulated are still in the banks’ favor. Consequently, consumers

aren’t getting much protection from local or federal regulations. Third, it wasn’t an accident that it all happened to begin with. The financial services industries are still spending lots of money lobbying Congress and state legislatures for the weakest rules possible to protect their bottom line. As you might imagine, very few highpaid lobbyists wine and dine Congress in order to promote tougher consumer protection laws. As a result, Congress basically has been ignoring most taxpayers. Instead, they’ve been concentrating on ways to better protect their campaign contributions. Congress held hearings earlier this year to overhaul the credit card industry. Lawmakers heard consumers’ pleas for help. The hearings resulted in a lot of demands for tighter consumer protection laws. Unfortunately, because of lobbying from the industry, coupled with record losses out of country’s biggest banks, nothing was done. All we got was a lot of talk, but no real action. As the new administration comes into office along with the new Congress, this issue may again be pushed to the back of the bus. There are a lot of bigger problems facing us all. But credit-challenged consumers need to be heard too. We need to remind our elected officials that credit card reform also needs to be a major priority. As President-elect Barack Obama suggested, “Let’s help Main Street, not just Wall Street.” Doing nothing just helps the banks keep their abusive practices that got us in this mess in the first place. One Final Thought: Banks are getting billions of public tax dollars in bailout funds, and they’re probably using much of the money lobbying Congress against stronger consumer protection laws. Why isn’t Congress or anyone else limiting exactly how our bailout dollars are being used? Are we getting hit with abusive credit card rates at the same time our tax dollars are being use to lobby against us? There’s certainly something wrong with that proposition. Watch Al Sunshine weekdays on CBS4 News beginning at noon.

ASK DR. RUTH BY DR. RUTH WESTHEIMER

He must not be defensive Q: I’m 38 years old and my wife is 31. We’ve been together for six years. We’re both educated and have no kids. I love my wife dearly and don’t want to lose her. She says she loves me also and wants to try to work things out, but she can’t promise me anything. I took our marriage for granted. It has become complacent. Although we spend a great deal of time with each other, romance and affection were lacking. I made her feel more like my buddy/best friend than my wife. In addition, I made it difficult for my wife to communicate with me because I get easily offended and tend to criticize back. As a result, she has withheld her inner feelings for three years. Now she says she is not sure if she can get those old feelings back for me. She recently told me she doesn’t feel affection for me anymore., and she is struggling with this. We are scheduled

for counseling. I pray each day that my wife will try as hard as me to patch things up. I am willing to make the necessary changes for the sake of our marriage. I also wonder if unrealistic expectations about marriage are involved here, since we both have solid core values. Do you have any advice? A: The best advice should come from this counselor you mention, as he or she will have a lot m ore information to go on than I do. The one thing I can say to you, based on what you’ve put down in your letter, is that you should go to this counselor with an open mind. You say that you love each other and that you treated your wife as a best friend, and yet she is quite upset. Your impressions of how you treated her and how she felt might be very different from hers, and if I’m right, this is going to come out as a result of the sessions with the counselor. If you get defensive, then this counseling is not going to have much effect. Since you admit you have this tendency, really try to listen to what the counselor has to say. You wife will undoubtedly have some private sessions, and she will be telling this counselor some of her feelings that she has not been able to communicate to you. It’s only by acknowledging those feelings that you can patch this marriage, and the only way you can do that is if you listen carefully without prejudice.

There are actually 16 components to real estate, not including teaching. My suggestion to agents who have a talent and passion for real estate is to stay the course: seek out opportunities, remain positive and move forward. It is important to have a back-up plan. Do what you have to do, but don't let your license lapse. Tap into your other resources without neglecting your positioning in real estate.

LC: Short sales and foreclosures are the buzzwords in the industry these days. What's your take on that?

RR: It's becoming a very trite subject. And unless you are working with the real source, you may end up spinning your wheels. I like to partner with people who have proven track records - both buyers and sellers. I provide my buyers with foreclosed homes directly from the auction. It reduces red tape

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE and bureaucracy. Many of these purchases close in less than a month. I'm fortunate to work with a team who have been obtaining and selling foreclosures for 24 years. The market will come back. The two things you need to succeed in this business are confidence and competence. If you approach every buyer and seller with integrity, in the long run it will pay off. LC: We hear you're continuing to do some promotions and charity work as well. RR: I have an eclectic mix of very talented friends in arts and entertainment, and I am bringing everyone together and pairing them up for events. Right now my main focus is on promoting Lloyd Goradesky, a very successful local photographer who is emerging as the next Miami success story. He has patented a new technique and recently hosted an exhibit on South Beach, coinciding with Art Basel. I'm still working with Greater Miami Jewish Federation; my daughter, Amit and I recently delivered baskets to the elderly for the Jewish New Year, which was tremendously gratifying. Accreditation Assessment Team invites public comment A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive on December 13th to examine all aspects of the Aventura Police Department policy and procedures, management, operations and support services. “Verification by the team that Aventura Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation,” says Chief Steven Steinberg. “This is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.” As part of the onsite assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, December 15th at 6:30 p.m. The session will be conducted in the City Commission chambers located at 19200 W. Country Club Drive, Aventura. If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone. The public may call 305-466-8103, ext. 8103 on Monday, December 15th, between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to ten minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Aventura Police Department.

Persons wishing to offer written statements about the Aventura Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100 Fairfax, Virginia 22030-2201 “The Aventura Police must comply with 460 standards in order to gain accredited status,” says Chief Steinberg. The Accreditation Program Manager for the Aventura Police Department is Capt. Steve Seefchak, who says: “the assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed.” Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status, CALEA Program Manager Stephen Mitchell stated. Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it is initially accredited. For more information, call 800-3683757 or Capt. Steve Seefchak at 305-4668986.

3+ carpools ride 95 Express lanes free Tolling may have started on the new 95 Express lanes but commuters like Chris Crabtree - who is in a registered 3+ carpool - isn't going to feel the pinch. "I know I am going to save time, money and fuel," says Crabtree, a Boca Raton resident who commutes 80 miles to and from Miami every day. "I formed a carpool as soon as I heard about the new express lanes." The 95 Express lanes replaced the HOV lanes on I-95 between I-395 Northbound in downtown Miami and the Golden Glades interchange in Phase 1A. Motorists will be charged a variable toll to use the lanes, which will fluctuate based on the level of congestion at a given time. Registered 3+ carpools, South Florida Vanpools, hybrids, motorcyclists and mass transit can ride the 95 Express lanes toll free. According Jim Udvardy, Project Manager for South Florida Commuter Services, nearly 700 carpoolers, more than 2,000 hybrid users and 24 vanpools have registered to ride the 95 Express lanes toll free. "A lot of people are a little hesitant when they first start carpooling but after

a couple of weeks they wonder why they didn't do it sooner," says Udvardy. "Who doesn't want to save money and get home sooner? Now that tolls have begun, we expect to see a big jump in the number of people wanting to carpool." Currently, the average speed of travel during peak rush hour traffic is 22 mph. 95 Express commuters are expected to be traveling at more than double that speed - a minimum of 45-50 mph. Predications are that commuters will save between 15-20 minutes of their commute time home. And by carpooling with two other commuters or driving a hybrid, it can be done toll free while cutting overall commuting costs by two-thirds. Hybrids, 3+ carpools and South Florida Vanpools must register by phone on 1-800-234-RIDE or online at 1800234RIDE.com to drive on the 95 Express lanes for free. Once registered, commuters will receive a 95 Express decal to display on their windshield. For more information on how to save time and money by sharing the ride, visit 1800234RIDE.com

Surviving difficulties BY PATRICIA C. FRANK Life can be full of challenges. For some people it can also be full of difficulties. These difficulties can be overwhelming. They can leave you frazzled and frozen, unable to cope. The key to survival is the ability to adapt to change and difficult situations. This sounds simple enough, yet it can be so hard to do. To adapt to change and difficult situations is to accustom yourself to the new conditions and to make adjustments. When you adjust something you put it in the correct order or position, you rearrange it in your mind and in your life. It is a mental skill. After you rearrange it in your mind, you have to get used to it. The ability to adapt is vital for good health both mental and physical. It is vital for your personal serenity and happiness. When difficulties occur they can seem like a catastrophe, especially if you are surrounded by people who are full of doubt and fear and negativity. The media and even your friends and dear ones may trigger feelings of doom and gloom. They can create feelings of anxiety and fear inside of you. It is very important not to get caught

up in their web of beliefs and emotions. You must avoid accepting their interpretation of the world and events. Separating your reactions and feelings from theirs is not always easy, but it will help you to cope and help you to avoid feelings of dread, apprehension and discouragement. It is helpful to realize that you do not have to change their opinion of things. You do not have to try to convince them of your view. It does not matter if any one around you believes what you believe. You can stand alone. You do not need anyone to support or agree with you. You do not have to disagree with them verbally. You can keep your own counsel. You can think and feel whatever you wish. Reject and debate their statements silently in your own mind. Repeat your own version of the truth in your mind. Think calming positive thoughts. Have confidence in yourself and your abilities. To be at peace, you must always see the situation through your own eyes. This requires a great deal of inner strength and determination but you can do it. The more you practice it the easier it becomes. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212 308-0309.

Every morning, Mary dreaded looking in her bathroom mirror because she looked much older than she felt. The skin under her chin was sagging, and she saw the beginning of jowls. Lines around her mouth gave her a sad appearance. She searched the internet came across the “South Beach Facelift.” She called, and the receptionist told her that the doctor did a ‘limited facelift’ that was far less risky than traditional facelift surgery. Mary made an appointment and met with the doctor. He answered her questions, and two weeks later, she had the surgery. Her sagging cheeks, wrinkled mouth, and jowls were not noticeable anymore. She was glad that the procedure was easy, with minimal swelling or bruising. When she went back to work five days later, everyone commented on how ‘well rested’ she looked. To learn more, we called the South Beach Facelift office and spoke with Dr. Bruce Weissman, who told us about this type of facelift surgery. Doctor, just what is the South Beach Facelift? Dr. Weissman: It’s a procedure I developed so a man or woman can look younger with less risk and about half the cost of a traditional facelift. It removes excess fat and skin from the chin, jaw, neck and cheeks. The

lower face regains the sharpness and definition of youth. How is this different from a traditional facelift? Dr. Weissman: I also perform traditional, full facelifts where the patient gets general anesthesia. The South Beach Facelift is an affordable, ninety minute, state-of-the-art procedure, done under local anesthesia to look younger. Recovery time is less than a week, which fits in with today’s fast paced lifestyle. What about sagging eyelids or eyebrows? Dr. Weissman: We can usually do an additional area, such as improving the brow line or the eyelids. Doctor, what are your credentials to do this type of surgery? Dr. Weissman: I’m board certified in head and neck surgery. I’ve treated patients in South Florida for more than thirty years with an established record of success. I graduated from Jefferson Medical College, interned and did surgical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and then specialized in Ear, Nose, Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Where can someone learn more? Dr. Weissman: Patient photos are at www.SouthBeachFacelift.com. They can call my office at Mount Sinai Medical Center at 305-674-1201 or in Hallandale at 954-4540544 for a complimentary consultation.

Earn up to 11.3% on your money, and 100% of a nation’s gratitude. For as little as $5,000, you can help achieve your financial goals and those of a nation — Israel. There is more reason than ever to create a charitable gift annuity with Jewish National Fund. JNF offers planned giving opportunities that give you a generous return, the benefit of tax savings, plus recognition in Israel. At the same time, JNF receives much-needed support to continue major projects ranging from water conservation, education, planting trees, building security roads and enhancing the quality of life for the people of Israel.

‘Gift of giving’ prevails this holiday season BY BARI AUERBACH In a time when turning on the news can be disheartening, it’s heartwarming to learn about some “good deeds” helping to make the holidays brighter for those less fortunate in our community… Intimacy at Aventura Mall Helping Dress for Success: Holding a “holiday bra drive,” Intimacy at Aventura Mall is asking customers to bring in new/gently used bras for donation to Miami’s Dress for Success. At the conclusion of the bra drive, Intimacy will match the total number of bras donated. To learn more about Intimacy or to make a reservation online for a free bra fit makeover, phone: 786629-9229 or visit myintimacy.com Toy Drives: Despite tough economic times, a myriad of groups organizing toy drives are hoping generous benefactors will still help put smiles on the faces of underprivileged kids by donating new, unwrapped toys for children. Locally, the Aventura Police Department and Sunny Isles Beach Police Department are collecting toys. Stop Hunger in North Miami at 12050 Northeast 14th Avenue is also accepting monetary donations through Dec. 19. For more information, phone: 305-891-8811. Holiday Sing-A-Long: Members of the Aventura Marketing Council recently visited the Miami Jewish Home and Hospital at Douglas Gardens to sing festive holiday songs to elderly residents. For more information about the Aventura Marketing Council’s Holiday Outreach Committee chaired by Stuart Geller of Geller Design Group, phone: 305-932-5334. Potamkin Honda Charity Raffle: Potamkin Honda in North Miami Beach recently helped non-profit organizations raise thousands for worthy causes by organizing a charity raffle for a 2008 Honda Fit. Participating charities belonging to the Aventura Marketing Council were able to keep 100% of the proceeds from raffle ticket sales. Jalila Moody, a teacher from Booker T. Washington and volunteer for the charitable organization Women of Tomorrow Mentor & Scholarship Program was the lucky winner of the Honda Fit.. “Anchors Away” Helps Disabled Students Sail to Success: “About three years ago, Dr. Jayne Greenberg came to the

Aventura Marketing Council to share her excitement about a new marine academy,” explained Aventura Vice Mayor Billy Joe, Anchors Away Committee Chair. “Her dream was to teach disabled kids how to sail on their own while learning science, math and life skills...Our third Anchors Away launch marked the addition of 14 new boats to our fleet – bringing the total to 29 boats – and counting - thanks to many generous benefactors.” For more information about becoming an Anchors Away sponsor and the fourth launch event planned for early 2009, phone: 305-9325334. Glam Hair Extensions “Glam-A-Thon Event” benefits St. Matthew Church: From now until Dec. 31, any first time Glam Hair Extensions client who mentions St. Matthew Church in Hallandale Beach will receive discounted services and 100% of profits will go directly to St. Matthew Church. “Glam Hair Extensions is committed to helping women look their best and helping St. Matthew during these tough economic times,” said Glam Hair owner Gina Diaz. “Donations will be used to offset building maintenance expenses at the church...We’re proud to help make a difference with ‘Glam-A-Thon’ events benefitting worthy causes. This program has enabled us to help others by reaching out to give back to individuals in our community.” For more information, contact Glam Hair Extensions 305- 932-3888 or visit glamhairextensions.com
