Mount Sinai Aventura, located at 2845 Aventura Boulevard, has recently expanded its diagnostic imaging services to include breast mammography. images for accurate diagnosis. Comprehensive breast services available at Mount Sinai include digital screening mammography, digital diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, computer aided detection, MRI guided biopsy, cyst aspiration and more. According to the National Cancer Institute, all women age 40 or older should have screening mammograms every one to two years. Early detection of breast cancer

with screening mammography means that treatment can be started earlier in the course of the disease, possibly before it has spread. Screening mammography can help reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among women ages 40 to 74, especially for those over age 50. Age is the most important risk factor for breast cancer. The older a woman is, the greater her chances of developing the disease, as most breast cancers occur in women over

the age of 50. The number of cases is especially high for women over age 60. Other risk factors for breast cancer include family history, genetic alterations, breast density, long-term use of menopausal hormone replacement therapy, radiation, alcohol use, body weight and low physical activity levels.

Beware of Unhealthy Salads

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Salads are considered very healthy. They are very versatile and usually contain a mixture of different ingredients; lettuce, vegetables, pastas, rice, nuts, meats, eggs and fruit are just a few of the more common combinations. You can incorporate just about anything in a salad. They are tasty and satisfying. You can even add dressing to blend all of the ingredients together. People who eat salads enjoy them and subconsciously feel a little virtuous. They believe that they are doing something good for themselves and for their health and longevity. It might surprise you to hear that there are some salads that can actually be unhealthy for you. Psychological, emotional salads are not good for you at all. An emotional or psychological salad contains all of the things that are wrong in your life; your fears, doubts, discontents, disappointments and your physical ailments, all

mixed together. You can literally pile your plate high with anxiety producing thoughts. These fears and anxieties, when combined, will give you emotional and psychological indigestion and heartburn. You cannot assimilate multiple concerns all at once. You risk feeling overwhelmed, sad and depressed. There are certain times that you should definitely avoid salads. Piling all kinds of negative thoughts and fears on your plate at night or during the wee hours is actually bad for you. Curtail and contain your negative thoughts and emotions. Work on eliminating them altogether from your diet. Treat them as if you are allergic to them. In reality, you are. The best psychological salads are full of positive thoughts and affirmations. Add all of your strengths and positive attributes. Don’t forget to add your accomplishments and your good fortune. You can also add a dash of desire and dreams. Top off your salad with faith and trust to bind it together. Faith and trust in a Higher Power and in yourself puts things in perspective and makes everything better. The right kind of salad will nourish your body and your spirit. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864

and Cardiac Care, I work with our Physician’s Assistant Ronald “Kip” Rider and team of healthcare professionals to help patients lead the highest quality of life. We offer a wide range of non-invasive testing, advanced treatments and preventative care for common ailments – as well as complex cardiac conditions. Q: Do patients appreciate a “heartfelt commitment” to superior care? SR: At our Hallandale Beach office, we strive to ensure patients always feel comfortable in a warm, friendly environment – and feel confident knowing their care and satisfaction are our top priority. We also minimize wait times while maximizing convenience with eight exam rooms, a radiology suite, and a myriad of on-site, state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. Q: How does your office implement the philosophy: “Proper treatment starts with the proper diagnosis”? SR: We’re dedicated to reducing the

incidence of and minimizing the impact associated with heart and vascular disease. Studies show it’s possible to decrease the likelihood of a cardiac event - or once it has happened, the chance of reoccurrence can also decline as a result of personal evaluations and testing - it’s about finding out what your risks or problems are and getting them under control. The Center for Internal Medicine and Cardiac Care offers electrocardiograms to analyze heart rhythms as well as certain abnormalities of the heat; pulmonary function tests; nuclear cardiac stress testing; echocardiography; pacemakers and defibrillator checks. Bone density testing and laboratory testing are also among the comprehensive services available. Q: Is experience and professionalism at the heart of your success? SR: Prior to establishing a private medical practice in 1984, I completed my fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at

Mount Sinai Medical Center; became Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular disease; and served as Chief of Medicine at Humana Hospital Biscayne as well as Vice Chief of Staff and Vice Chief of Medicine at Aventura Hospital. Our PA Ronald “Kip” Rider also focuses on cardiology and internal medicine as well as orthopedics and emergency care. Q: What is one of the best testimonials you’ve ever received? SR: “Dr. Rapp is the best doctor I’ve ever had. I travel 20 miles each way to see him. He is a good listener, prompt, to the point, patient and kind. His staff is also exceptional!” For more information about the Center for Internal Medicine and Cardiac Care in Hallandale Beach, accepting Medicare, Humana and most insurances, call 954-456-5533 or visit cimcare.com

Reach out, touch people, because you care

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS This November, I will be term-limited out after serving almost ten years as a Commissioner in Aventura. As my political days are over, I offer advice to those who are running for political office: “Reach out, touch people, because you care.” Years ago, I had the great honor of serving Hillside, N.J. as City Attorney, Commissioner, Mayor and Municipal Court Judge. It was Hillside, where Arlene and I started going together at age 14, graduated high school together, married and raised our three children. In 1965, the Hungarian organization in Newark gave up their location and merged with the Hillside Hungarian group. As Mayor, I was invited to give the welcoming speech at the merger celebration at the Hillside Hungarian Hall. I enquired of a Hungarian friend about the make-up of the group. He advised that most were recent immigrants who spoke little English. My

friend advised me to give the speech in Hungarian, a language I knew nothing about. “Try,” he said, “It makes a difference.” I wrote out the proposed welcoming speech in English, gave it to my friend who returned it in Hungarian words. Not a single word sounded familiar. After spending hours memorizing the Hungarian words, my friend spent hours with me on the correct pronunciation of each word. I shall never forget what happened. About 500 people were in attendance when Arlene and I arrived at the Hungarian Hall. The audience was silent as I rose to give the welcoming speech. I suddenly became nervous that I might stumble over the Hungarian words, and I began the speech in English. It was a complete disaster, as I soon lost the audience. Regaining my confidence, I suddenly began the speech in Hungarian. Strange words were coming from me. By my second sentence, the shocked audience became silent. By the fourth sentence, I saw smiling faces focusing on me. By the 6th sentence, the applause began. When I finished the speech, the entire audience stood and applauded, while I took Arlene by her hand as we walked down the aisle. A lesson I offer to others.

Positivity: How to create light and share SEASON OF CHANGE Sometimes people come into your life, and when you meet them, you have no clear idea or understanding WHY they have entered your sphere. That is the case with a dear friend of mine. A man who some of you may have heard of others — perhaps just becoming aware — but nonetheless, a man who has an unwavering belief in the goodness of people and our world. The musician, Kevens. For those of you following my blog on the fun and eye-opening journey I call Highway to a Husband, you know I often share stories which point to my desire to seek out positive situations and find ways to turn even the most frustrating experiences into something positive and worthwhile for myself and others. Kevens has that same approach; except he takes it to an entirely new level. A writer, musician and international artist, Kevens describes himself as a “globally informed performer.” His style of music is a unique blend of styles, rhythms and sounds resulting in a funky and hip groove; Rock Reggae. Listen to his tunes and you’ll quickly understand just how unique he truly is. Honestly, I can’t even remember what year I met Kevens, but I DO remember the mutual friend who introduced us said, “There’s someone I think you should meet. You have similar energy. I think you’ll be friends.” Sure enough, that mutual friend was right. It’s not often you are in the presence

O&G wins 2012 National Mature Media Awards Commissioner Bob Diamond accepting award at Forest Trace

The 21st annual National Mature Media Awards program recently recognized O’Connell & Goldberg’s (O&G) inventive PR and marketing efforts with three awards on behalf of the agency’s client, Forest Trace, a South Florida luxury retirement community. The awards honor the nation’s finest marketing, communications, educational materials, and programs designed and produced for older adults. Staying Alive, a video O&G created to celebrate “Older Americans Month” that starred community residents, received a Silver Award for DVDs/CDs in the Healthcare division http://tinyurl.com/8bvuc8l. The agency won Bronze Awards in the Healthcare Consumer/Public Relations Campaign category for the Forest Trace Annual Golden Matzah Bowl competition http://tinyurl.com/9748fxe and Turn Back Time Awards http://tinyurl.com/9dv6zko. The Golden Matzah Bowl, which generates widespread media coverage each year, determines the best South Florida “professional” matzah ball and best “homemade” recipes, with winners receiving an award and donation to the charity of their choice. The Turn Back Time Awards honors persons 80 and older who continue making significant contributions to the community. According to O&G CEO Barbara Goldberg, understanding the aging population is vital in today’s market. Under the leadership of staff member Karen Dennis, a former assisted living professional, the

Some of our best recent work, including social media initiatives, has emanated from our experience with the mature market,” she added. Spacial Designs, Inc., one of NYC’s most loved architects, now in South Florida

Erin Kehoe ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Mark Goodman –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Spacial Designs Inc., a New York based architectural/interior design firm, has opened an office in Aventura. Mark Goodman and Erin Kehoe boast extensive experience working with hi-end residential clients and a broad range of national and international corporations, including Hugo Boss, Ermenegildo Zegna, Phillip Morris, Republic National Bank and Bloomberg L.P. Erin’s career began at Goldman Sachs, as an interior designer, where she gained insight and the experience in large scale corporate design. She then moved on to the nationally ranked design firm, SCR Design Organization. Mark is an architect, who started his career with the world renowned architectural firm of Philip Johnson & John Burgee Architects. After spending eight years with Philip Johnson, he joined the office of Marcel Breuer Associates, as a Senior Project Architect. Mark and Erin’s mutual love of architecture and interior design brought them together in 1993, to form Spacial Designs. Spacial Designs is bringing their creativity, expertise and professionalism to the South Florida market. Mark Goodman, Architectural Partner, stated, “Our mission is to earn the right to be called our client’s trust-

ed advisor and to bring a fresh and innovative approach to each of our projects.” For the past several years Spacial Designs’ focus has been on hi-end residential projects, including “ground-up” houses and condominium renovations. Through their attention to detail, cooperative style, and ability to work within time and budgetary constraints, Spacial Designs has earned the trust and respect of their clients. As David Silver, one of Spacial Designs’ recent clients affirmed: “My friends described some of their nightmares in working with architects, designers and contractors. So, when I first bought my apartment, I had some ideas as to what the experience might be like. I was anticipating that with whomever I worked with, it would be a contentious relationship at best. Needless to say, working with the two of you was anything but contentious. I thought that I might have regretted not doing something during the construction of my home. I can honestly say that the renovation is perfect as it is.” For more information about Spacial Designs, Inc., call (305) 931-4728 or visit online at spacialdesignsinc.com

2013 Cadillac XTS Sedan is a technological wonder Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS Cadillac’s big new XTS luxury sedan is making a lot of waves in the automotive world. Billed as a replacement for the old DTS model, it certainly is an upgrade in design and style, and it comes with more standard technology features than I have seen on a car in the 12 years that I have been writing this column. There is just so much technology included with this car that it has been labeled as the most technologically advanced production car in Cadillac’s history. At the heart of all this technology is the new CUE system, Cadillac’s new in-vehicle tablet interface for control and connectivity, and it’s very similar to an Apple iPad. CUE (for Cadillac User Experience) merges intuitive design with the auto controls for information and media control, and it is standard equipment on all models. There is a big eight-inch screen in the cen-

ter stack and, using the faceplate below the screen and the steering wheel controls, CUE is easy to customize. CUE also has several industry firsts, including capacitive-touch control with proximity sensing, haptic feedback, gesture recognition and natural voice recognition. Capacitive touch is the technology used on many of today’s better tablets and smartphones. Also new is a 12.3-inch reconfigurable instrument cluster. It has vibrant graphic displays showcased among four driver-selectable themes, ranging from minimal to extensive information Aside from CUE, there’s the advanced Haldex all-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, and the standard Magnetic Ride Control. Then there are the rear air springs for a better ride, the HiPer Strut front suspension for surer handling, front Brembo brakes for more stopping power, an intervening braking system that lessens or avoids potential collisions and short- and long-range radar systems that support adaptive cruise control, front/rear automatic brakes and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Under the hood, there’s an advanced 3.6liter V-6 engine rated at 304 hp and 264 pounds-feet of torque. Lightweight features help reduce overall weight for greater effi-

ciency and a more favorable front-to-rear weight balance. Examples include a composite intake manifold that saves about 5.5 pounds and an integrated cylinder head/exhaust manifold design that saves another 13 pounds. The engine is mated to the Hydra-Matic 6T70 six-speed automatic transmission with tap-shift control. Other innovations include a capless fuel tank filler for easier, cleaner refueling and the new Safety Alert Seat that gently vibrates your butt when you are dangerously close to an object while driving or backing up. The XTS is positioned just above the CTS

in the Cadillac lineup and offered in three trim levels or collections: Luxury, Premium and Platinum. The XTS Platinum obviously is the highest level of technology and luxury, and has a unique front appearance, wheels and interior colors, materials and trim. Base price on the 2012 Cadillac XTS is $44,995. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital celebrates 20 years of world-class healthcare

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has spent the last 20 years growing up to become the leading children’s hospital in Broward and Palm Beach counties and a regional pediatric specialty facility. For the first 19 years, it was within Memorial Regional Hospital, one of Florida’s largest hospitals and the flagship facility of Memorial Healthcare System. On July 21, 2011, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital opened its doors as a new freestanding facility across from its parent hospital in a building specially designed for children and families. “One of the keys to our success has been truly listening to our patients and their families and incorporating their feedback into our plans,” said Nina Beauchesne, FACHE, administrator, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and administrator, Pediatric Services, Memorial Healthcare System. As a full-service, patient- and familycentered hospital, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital creates a healing environment where kids can be kids and parents are partners in care. The advanced facility is staffed 24 hours a day by pediatricians, pediatric specialists, specialty-trained nurses and support staff.

During the past two decades, the hospital developed Broward County’s only pediatric heart transplant program and performed the first pediatric cardiac catheterization and open heart surgery in Broward and Palm Beach counties. It also comprised the region’s largest diversity of board-certified pediatric specialists and opened Pediatric Emergency Departments in Hollywood, Miramar and Pembroke Pines. It has one of the state’s few nationally accredited cystic fibrosis centers, a nationally recognized asthma program ranked third in the nation and features U18 Sports Medicine for young athletes. The freestanding hospital is a fourstory, 180,000-square-foot facility that showcases an overall “Power of Play” theme with each floor displaying themes of Sports, Arts, Games or Dreams. It is connected to Memorial Regional Hospital via an elevated walkway with a total of 204 licensed beds, six pediatric operating rooms, radiology services and an entire floor dedicated to pediatric oncology care. ‘Quick and painless’ relief Holistic Health Care Miami masters pain management BY BARI AUERBACH

Whether you have an aching back, sore muscles, a sports injury or are trying to cope with other “painful situations,” Holistic Health Care Miami’s pain management strategies encompass a variety of individualized treatments that can help improve your quality of life in the most quick and painless ways. Licensed in Oriental and Chinese medicine, Holistic Health Care Miami cofounders Maria Stellato and Adriana Perez provide holistic pain management therapies utilizing non-invasive modalities including acupuncture, massage, physical therapy, Chinese herbs, homeopathy and healing Reiki treatments. “When patients come in with pain, we often start with aromatherapy and body massage utilizing essential oils specific to the condition,” Stellato explains. “Subsequent plans can include mesotherapy, electrical stimulation, acupuncture, sauna, light therapy or a combination of these treatments - most often prescribed in conjunction with Chinese herbs from our on-site pharmacy. Chinese herbs are highly effective for promoting pain relief as well as overall health and well-being.” ACUPUNCTURE ACCELERATES PAIN RELIEF: “Clinical studies show acupuncture can be an effective modality in the treatment of almost all kinds of pain conditions,” Stellato explains. “Acupuncture may actually help prevent pain by acting on the sympathetic nervous system and stimulating the body to produce biochemical substances, such as endorphins, to help reduce pain. It is also used to balance the ‘chi’ - flow of energy.” HANDS-ON HEALING POWER: Reiki treatments support natural healing as energy flows from the practitioner’s

hands, placed in a sequence of positions covering the whole body. Holistic Health Care Miami also helps alleviate aches and pains with massage, physical therapy and ‘Cupping’ treatments. “Cupping involves placing cups on specific body parts to create a vacuum effect relieving muscle pain and tension,” Stellato says. CHINESE HERBS FOR HOLISTIC HEALTH: “The Chinese herbs we prescribe for various pain treatments are combined to create formulas enhancing healing power,” Stellato said. Holistic Health Care Miami often prescribes Moxivustion containing an herb called mugwort to target a specific point or body location with heat and accelerate the healing process. Injection therapies consisting of natural biological products, such as herbs, homeopathic products and vitamins can also help treat a wide range of symptoms and pain. QUICK AND PAINLESS: Holistic Health Care Miami, conveniently located at 17150 Northeast 19th Avenue in North Miami Beach, is now offering costeffective, 20 minute sessions providing fast results when you’re in a rush or on a budget. Metro Ford: Big city features with small town friendliness

Metro Ford’s showroom is located at 9000 NW Seventh Ave. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY NANCY EAGLETON

Metro Ford has the desirable qualities of a big city auto dealership, while at the same time possessing the endearing qualities of a small town business. The family owned and operated dealership offers an exceptional selection of new and preowned Ford vehicles and incomparable financing options, but it’s the personalized customer service that makes it a local standout. “The atmosphere of a family-owned business is just different,” said Lomby Perez, vice president of Metro Ford who runs the business with his father Lombardo Perez Sr. “We work very hard to build and maintain long-term relationships with employees and our customers.” That hard work has paid off. In business since 1983, Metro Ford is now selling vehicles to second and third generations within the same families. “Some customers travel across the state or even from out of the state to come back to us for their next vehicle, or one for their son or daughter,” Perez added. “It’s been very rewarding to serve these loyal customers.” Before opening Metro Ford, Perez Sr., owned and operated a Fiat dealership. Miami Fiat was the most successful Fiat dealership in the nation. After Fiat pulled out of the U.S. in 1981, Ford Motor Company came knocking and Perez Sr. answered the call. Under his direction, in a short time Metro Ford became the No. 1 Ford dealer in the Southeast region. The younger Perez has grown up in the auto industry, starting at the Fiat dealership when he was just 11 years old. After paying his dues doing “owner’s son duties,” Perez worked his way up the business ladder to work side-by-side with his father. With good performance comes rewards,

which Metro Ford now can pass on to its customers. Metro Ford is one of only two Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) dealers in the area. The 2013 Ford Focus Electric, arriving soon, is powered exclusively by a new lithium-ion battery system. The Focus Electric has best-in-class horsepower, 100 miles of range and higher speed charging. “The future is electric cars,” Perez said. “We are thrilled to offer this product to our customers. Our sales and service team are EV certified by Ford to provide the very best service.” Another “major home run” for Ford is the combination of efficiency and performance in the 2013 Ford Fusion. In addition to the well-known hybrid model, Fusion will offer EcoBoost, the standard model and the upcoming Energi Plug-In. The 2013 Ford Escape also has an eco-friendly side, offering two available EcoBoost engines. The popular redesigned crossover offers the best automatic highway fuel economy in its class. Customers can shop for new and preowned vehicles on the interactive Metro Ford website at <www.MetroFord.com>. The site allows customers to view dealer specials and incentives, get a quote, apply for credit and chat online with a sales representative. “Customers today like to do their research in the comfort of their home or office,” Perez said. “An educated customer is our best customer. When they come to the dealership, they are often ready to test drive and make a decision.” The Metro Ford Service and Parts Department, staffed by Ford certified technicians, now offers extended hours — until 7 p.m. on weekdays — to meet the demands of customers’ busy schedules. Metro Ford is located at 9000 NW Seventh Ave. in Miami. For more information, call 1-877-8119402 or visit <www.metroford.com>.
