Parksman Parking experiences explosive growth BY BARI AUERBACH
E
ven faster than an exotic sports car, Parksman Parking has been experiencing “explosive growth” — establishing new partnerships, launching new divisions, landing exclusive contracts with premier properties and enhancing service with cutting-edge technology. Attributing great success to over 20 years of experience and the drive to surpass ordinary standards, Parksman Parking President and Managing Partner Ben Launerts believes, “Excellence is non-negotiable!” NEW PARTNERSHIPS & PROPERTIES Shifting expansion into high gear, Parksman Parking is partnering with
Universal Parking of America’s Florida Highrise Division. Luxurious highrises now in the Parksman/Universal portfolio include: Turnberry Village North/South towers; Biscayne Cove Tower and Clipper buildings; 3900 Williams Island; Murano Grande; and The Ivy in the Brickell area. Parksman Parking was also recently awarded The Pinnacle and St. Tropez condominiums in Sunny Isles Beach; Solaris at Brickell Bay; and 200 East Condominium Association in Boca Raton. This brings Parksman to twenty parking locations achieved in just nine short months. NEW DIVISIONS Talk about “speedy car recovery!”

Transference at Work can be Perilous
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Transference is when you redirect your childhood thoughts, beliefs and emotions about a person onto a new person later in life. It is a psychological phenomenon that is usually unconscious. Transference in the workplace occurs when certain people and situations are reminiscent of your prior relationships and situations. You may not recognize these feelings or beliefs as something from the past and therein lies the danger professionally. You might not have learned how to handle the original relationship or situation, so you are likely to repeat your reaction to it, regardless of whether or not your reaction is appropriate or inappropriate. This leaves you very vulnerable because you might overact or underreact. You may be creating a negative scenario in your mind and all of your interactions with the current person are based on that. Your father may have been very authoritarian. Your co-worker or your
boss may remind you of your father. This can cause a lot of friction and passiveaggressive behavior on your part. On the other hand, you may remind your coworker or boss of someone from his past whose behavior he disapproved of. This is equally dangerous. There is a possibility that you may be fired. The situation could go the other way and you could be overly compliant with an individual because they remind you of a childhood friend or teacher who liked you. Your reactions to that person could make you look weak and ineffectual. This is equally hazardous. If you are experiencing any negative emotions or situations at work don’t just blame the other person. Make an effort to understand what is really happening. Look for similarities in the person’s appearance or their mannerisms. Ask yourself if they resemble anyone from your past. If they do, you will need to look very closely and decide if your reactions are appropriate or not. If the negative reactions are coming from them you will have to talk to them in a gentle, nonconfrontational manner. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychologist. She can be reached at 305788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Parksman Parking has launched a new Medical Services Division and now, Aventura Hospital and Medical Center has contracted Parksman to take over valet operations at their main campus, providing the special attention and care needed for patients and guests. Parksman has also established a new Transportation Division and is now driving the in-house Bentley gracing St. Regis Bal Harbour – the brand new hotel and luxury condominium developed and managed by Starwood. “When the St. Regis decided they wanted the highest quality personnel for their new chauffeur services, they turned to Parksman Parking professionals,” Launerts said. NEW TECHNOLOGY Fueling fast track growth with cuttingedge technology, Parksman clients now benefit from “ValeTrac™” Valet Parking software thanks to their new partnership with Universal. Launerts explains, “With ValeTrac™, we can monitor every facet of our onsite operations plus customized reporting enables clients to view detailed
aspects of parking services and revenues.” NEW WAYS OF GIVING BACK Parksman Parking recently provided valet services and helped sponsor the multi-Chamber “Military Makeover” charity event and classic car show at the Dania Beach Design Center. Launerts also works closely with ESGR to hire returning members of the military; and serves as fundraising chair for the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism at 11 Miami-Dade schools. He was recently honored as a Rising Star award from the Miami Beach Chamber and a Community Leadership award from Bnai Zion Foundation. Wishing colleagues, clients and friends all the best in 2012, Launerts shares a famous Einstein quote expressing Parksman Parking’s winning game plan for continued growth and success: “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”

‘Bucking the Trend’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY Just recently, South Florida cities were dubiously dubbed “Most Miserable” and “Trashiest Spring Break Destinations” – but Aventura is bucking the trend, worthy of earning terrific titles like these: Best Dressed City: Forget NY’s Fashion Week – every day, right here in Aventura you can see best dressed people accessorized with dazzling jewelry, perfectly coiffed hairdos, mani-pedis and masterfully applied makeup…If we all look so good at the gym, just imagine how much more glamorous we get for a night on the town! Most Diverse City: Rumor has it training for local retail associates now includes Rosetta Stone sessions so when culturally rich residents and visitors ask questions in their native tongue, they’ll always be understood - even if they’re speaking two, three, four or more languages all at the same time!
Smartest City: Deciding to have a “grade A” school in Aventura was arguably one of the smartest things city leaders ever decided to do - because now, when all the kids grow up there will be smart adults who actually know how to operate all the new high tech devices that keep coming out - just when we figured out how to use the old ones! First Rate City: Aventura has the lowest property tax rate in Miami-Dade County – so what will we do with all the money we save? Head to directly to Aventura Mall (to be good citizens and help stimulate the economy, of course!) Tannest City: Isn’t it great we get to wear swimsuits in winter instead of snowsuits? Aventura has become renowned for having some of the greatest tans of any city around – so in order to maintain this golden reputation, please refrain from washing your sheets in laundry rooms where others might see the tanning lotion streaks on your sheets! Happiest City: Why is Mona Lisa smiling? Perhaps because she heard when it comes to the fine art of creating the highest quality of life, the City of Aventura is worthy of the most terrific title: “Masterpiece success!”

He went the extra mile and said ‘Here, give her my cell phone, and have her call me.’ He continuously goes above and beyond for his patients and the nurses. He is simply the best!” Dr. David Grossman is Board Certified in General Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Let’s vote for Jessica Rafalowski! AT&T YOUNG STARS SHOWCASE Emcee competes for 2012 Maxim Hot 100 list
Gorgeous.... intelligent... gracious... kind.... yes, these are the adjectives we would use to descrribe Jessica Rafalowski Jessica has just been nominated for the Maxim Hot 100 list for 2012...and she’s in competition with some of the biggest names in show business and influential women in the world. But we know that Jessica belongs in that elite group of 100 winners, and we’re asking everyone to take a moment and vote for Jessica online. The link is http://www.maxim.com/maxim-hot100-2012 and her name is in the second column about half way down. This year, Maxim is allowing the public to vote for the ranking, similar to American Idol, where you can vote as many times as you wish. Hundreds of South Floridians had an opportunity to meet Jessica during the 2010 and 2011 AT&T YOUNG STARS SHOWCASE held each December at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center produced by the Aventura Marketing Council. “WOW!” would probably be an appropriate word to describe everyone’s response to meeting her. Jessica served as co-emcee for the 2011 show along with noted singer Chloe Dolandis, and the audience simply loved her. But ask the youngsters backstage about how Jessica interacted with them... calming them down before showtime... offering encouragement and support — that’s when you learn the true measure of an individual. Nick Merico, 16 , one of the young stars who performed in 2010 and in 2011 and is now about to release his own CD, said, “Jessica did a great job in emceeing the show and is a very beautiful woman who gave generously of her time and encouragement

to all the young singers!” Cliff Schulman of Weiss Serota Helfman, and Chairman of the Board of the Aventura Marketing Council and Chairman of the 2010 and 2011 AT&T YOUNG STARS SHOWCASE, added, “Jessica has the whole package... beauty and brains. Persona and caring for People. Statuesque and Stately. Unbeatable and Unbelievable. Beautiful and Bikini! The Most and “The Maxim” of Maxim!” Ran Oz, Creative Director of the event for the past two years, and CEO of CooLAM Dance Studio Productions, said, “Jessica has a heart of gold...and her inner beauty shines through the moment you meet her! She helped us immensely with our showcases for the past two years as we featured some of the most talented young singers in South Florida...and we know this ranking can help her career as a model, so I’m going to vote for her as often as I can!” Jessica is a former Miss Florida USA who graduated from Stetson University with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. Her busy career as an international model takes her between New York and Miami as the Beach Bunny Swimwear Model Search Winner and as a model for Maxim Magazine. Jessica always finds time to ‘give back’ to her communities by hosting charitable events and mentoring teens.

Bob Lilienfeld of Melnick Lilienfeld & Castonguay, CPAs... working for and with you Long gone are the days when tax preparation meant someone gathering your receipts, income investment statements and piles of other data and punching in some numbers on a calculator to fill in lines for you on federal and state returns. Today, a CPA will prepare your return for as well as with you. For the term of your relationship with your accounting professional (and his or her staff), you are teammates. You are two individuals working together, offering yin and yang-like strengths and weaknesses to put forth the strongest effort of work, and in some cases, creativity to produce the lowest legal tax allowed. Bob Lilienfeld and his associates, Mike Melnick and Susan Castonguay along with their team of professionals, are licensed and tested to know the most up-to-date laws and regulations in your state. Your CPA should be your trusted tax partner to help you be active, rather than reactive. Together, you can create a game plan by evaluating budgets and investments with tax ramifications in mind, rather than try to
Bob Lilienfeld, Susan Castonguay and Michael Melnick ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
figure out how to make the most out of whatever activities you did engage in before understanding how they would
affect your taxes. In addition, your CPA can save you time and money as you file your quarterly and
annual personal or small business taxes. It is his or her job to be on top of the dozens of changes to the tax law that take place each year. Try to fill out your own forms and you’ll surely miss tax deductions—that alone could cover the price of having a CPA fill out your returns. The preparation of your tax return should be just the beginning of your conversations with your CPA. Year-round discussions and updates will reveal what a valuable asset your accountant can be as a business and financial strategist who can help you with financial planning services, investment advice and estate planning. Getting married, divorced, having kids, sending them to college, thinking of retiring or passing your business down to a child? All of those significant life stages affect your tax liability and financial goals and warrant an invite, call to, or celebration with your CPA.

2013 Hyundai Veloster lineup adds hot new 201 hp turbo
Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS I liked the Hyundai Veloster when I first drove it at the press preview in Portland, OR, back in October. I like it even more after spending a week behind the wheel of the little three-door coupe. It’s nicely designed, very sporty and handles well in traffic and on the highway. My only knock on the car was that it was a bit underpowered, but Hyundai has moved to correct that fault, introducing a new turbocharged model for the 2013 lineup. The turbo version of the Veloster made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in January. It’s a bookend to Hyundai’s turbocharged sports coupe lineup, paired with the refreshed 274 hp rear-wheel-drive 2013 Genesis Coupe 2.0T (Turbo), which also debuted at the show. Veloster is powered by a new 1.6-liter 201 hp Turbocharged-Gasoline Direct Injection (T-GDI) engine mated to a six-speed auto-
matic or manual transmission. The T-GDI engine produces 201 hp at 6,000 rpm and 195 pounds-feet of torque from 1,750-4,500 rpm with regular gas, and delivers 27/38 mpg with manual transmission models. The Gamma engine has a twin-scroll turbocharger that, when combined with the GDI system, results in instantaneous power delivery. Twin-scroll turbochargers are usually found on more expensive high performance engines. They have two exhaust gas inlets divided by split walls inside the turbine housing, with both gas passages controlled by a waste-gate. A twin-scroll turbo recovers more energy from the exhaust than a singlescroll turbocharger, thanks to a divided manifold. The twin-scroll design separates the cylinders, whose exhaust gas pulses interfere with each other, resulting in improved pressure distribution in the exhaust ports and a more efficient delivery of exhaust gas energy to the turbocharger’s turbine. The Turbo Veloster has the same 104.3inch wheelbase as the production Veloster, but the Turbo is 1.2 inches longer (167.3 inches) and about a half-inch wider (71.1 inches). It is further distinguished by a sexy sporttuned engine intake and exhaust note, sporttuned steering, a unique front fascia, fog-

lights, 18-inch alloy wheels with chrome inserts, a Graphite Black interior with blue accents and headliner graphics. Full leather seats with the word “Turbo” stitched into the seatbacks deliver a unique look and offer excellent support and comfort. A Supervision Cluster in the dash gives the driver information in a larger, clearer and more interactive format, thanks to a pair of screens located between the tachometer and the speedometer. The center stack and controls resemble a sport-bike fuel tank and
incorporate a push-button starter and alloy pedals. Heated front seats are standard on the Turbo version. Pricing on the 2012 Hyundai Veloster starts at $17,300, but an MSRP for the Turbo model has not yet been released. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Florida Board of Governors seeking applicants for FIU Board of Trustees BY KELLY LAYMAN
The Trustee Nominating Committee of the Florida Board of Governors is seeking candidates for an appointment to the Board of Trustees for Florida International University. Each of the 11 state universities has a 13-member board of trustees responsible for cost-effective policy, and for implementing and maintaining high-quality education programs consistent with the university’s mission. The boards of trustees also develop processes to meet state policy, budgeting and education standards. Individuals interested in this public service must complete an application. The term of service is through Jan. 6, 2015, and would fill an existing vacancy. Applicants do not need to live in the Miami area to serve in this capacity. “The Board of Governors is looking for individuals to serve as university trustees who are interested in higher education and
interested in taking our universities to a level of excellence that helps both the institution and the goals of the State University System,” said Morteza “Mori” Hosseini of Daytona Beach, chair of the Trustee Nominating Committee of the Florida Board of Governors. For more information and the application visit online at <www.flbog.edu/aboutsus/ubt.php>. Applications for seats appointed by the Board of Governors should be mailed to the address in Tallahassee indicated for processing, and not to the university. Also, Board of Governors’ appointments are separate from appointments that are made to university boards of trustees by the Governor of Florida. The deadline for completed applications to be received is Mar. 1. For questions, call the Board of Governors at 1-850-2450466. For more about the Board of Governors, visit <www.flbog.edu>. For more about FIU, visit <www.fiu.edu>.

Welcome ‘Blu Sushi’ to the Neighborhood
Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer
EAT THIS... DRINK THAT I went there on a Saturday night, say between 8:30 and 9. It was reasonably crowded – perhaps 50 percent of the tables were full, as was the entire sushi bar, which is where my husband and I typically like to sit. We went to the hostess and told her we’d wait at the bar until two seats at the sushi bar came available. We had just enough time to study the cocktail menu (which was actually filled with interesting combinations of ingredients to create drinks such as Eve’s Apple a.k.a. an appletini; A Ginger Cosmo, which adds one of my faves – ginger – to the age-old favorite; Ladies in Pear-a-dice, Grey Goose la Poire, watermelon pucker, a splash of lemonade and cran and a squeeze of fresh lime, and many others) and order before the hostess came to lead us to our seats. We followed obediently and sat. With only about eight seats (give or take) at the sushi bar, it’s great for those who really want to interact with their food. My husband and I love that – we want to talk to the chef, inspect the fish, ask questions, and create our own rolls whenever possible, so imagine our delight when after about 5 minutes, many of the other seats cleared out and no one sat down. In other words, “the chef was ours.” We also like to order directly from the chef – no disrespect to the servers – but the chef is always going to offer us more intellect, more responsiveness, and more creativity when it comes to ordering and delivering the exact items that we want to eat. As anyone who reads my column with any frequency knows, I am a purist. I want to taste each ingredient. I do not want extra sauces. I want things in the fashion that they are supposed to be in, meaning – Nigiri sushi equals raw fish and rice (not counting eel), held together with a faint brushing of wasabi; maki sushi equals fish and veggies wrapped in nori; sashimi equals sliced raw fish – period. The end. Not cream cheese. Not jalapeños. Not Mango. Ew. Not okay. I am sure every time a cream cheese roll is consumed, some sushi chef is crying…but so, I digress. That night, although the menu looked lovely, packed with creative “new style sushi,” which mixes cooked and raw items together, as well as adds the ubiquitous
cream cheese, we opted to create our own. We got to chatting with “Joe,” the Korean/Puerto Rican sushi chef, who was at our service. I really wanted Poke (pronounced poke ee, cubed raw tuna salad) or Uke (pronounced u-kay, a chopped raw tuna mixed with chili oil for heat) and asked for it. Joe did not hesitate to oblige. He hooked me up with a small dice of tuna that packed a lot of heat, Fuji apples on the side to cool my mouth, and a side of nori. I could not have been happier. We asked for hamachi (yellowtail) and told him to do it “his way”. We received eight pieces of beautiful nori sheets stuffed with yellowtail snapper and instead little scallions, he topped them with fried leeks. Very nice. I did try a ginger salad, which was sorely disappointing. The ginger dressing was not ginger dressing. It was some form of vinaigrette and it was mediocre at best. But my order of edamame was bountiful (and heavily salted), and I had two lovely hand rolls – a tuna and salmon and scallion – both very basic, and really delicious. There actually is an art to making the perfect hand roll. It’s a balance of rice and fish and there must be enough of each for me to eat through the whole cone and taste both straight through to the last bite. Tah-dah! Easy – but not always achieved. Joe hooked me up. He also shared a lot of information about the restaurant business, his career, sushi rice, and more. I liked him. I liked him and the experience enough to forget about the drinks that we ordered from the bartender, who forgot to make them and thus, the waitress forgot to bring them to us – even after I asked a few times. But guess what? I didn’t really care. Why? Well, because I was more interested in the food and the experience, which again, I really liked. So by the time we were finished, which by the way, usually ends without dessert, because at least I (if not my hubby, too) likes leaving the table with the taste of real food in my mouth – we were full and happy. So my overall decision is, I liked Blu. I liked it because I had the option of choice, the fish was fresh, and Joe was cool. Will I go back? Probably not. There are too many other sushi places to experience, but we’ll always have that night – and I think Joe will do great things.

RayPrinciotta 5 Real Estate Deal Killers - and What Sellers Can Do To Prevent It ON REAL ESTATE OK, so you’ve decided to sell. Your property is not in distress, and you still have equity you want to protect. It’s a major decision, probably one of the biggest ones you’ll ever make and you want to do it right. The difference between a sale or no sale often rests on a only few key factors. Become familiar with these deal killers and you jumpstart your efforts as you towards your goal of closing the sale.
#1.- OVERPRICING is the single biggest problem a seller must overcome. You might think your condo is worth the big money it used to be, back before the real estate market sank. Unfortunately, times have changed. With all the
information available on the Internet, buyers are profoundly aware of today’s market prices. You need to get serious. TIPS: Visit the competition by going to Open Houses in similar buildings; check out listings for similar properties online and in the newspapers; and contact multiple real estate agents and get their opinion on your price.
#2.-
CLUTTER, DIRT, AND ODOR can take thousands off the price, and at worst case make buyers run away. This is a big purchase in a bad market so it’s up to you to make sure your condo shows favorably: clean, sweet smelling and clutter free. TIPS: Clear out all the unwanted stuff, donate or pack away your old collections, make sure table and counter tops are bare. Banish old pet beds, air out stale odors and use neutral air freshener (nothing too flowery).
#3.-
HIGHLY PERSONALIZED
TASTE can kill a sale. Sellers can run into problems when the decor is too unique to allow the buyer to imagine himself or herself living in the home. Unusual wall colors, floor and window treatments can be a turn-off. (it always makes me laugh when watch HGTV and I see Buyers walking through a home for sale and their biggest complaint is the color, but that is what people see...so don't fight it, fix it). To get top dollar in your neighborhood it’s important to “neutralize” your condo to conform with popular tastes. TIP: Check with local real estate agents and prepare a checklist of work that needs to be done inside and outside the property. The real estate agent can help you prioritize the list before you make a big investment in pre-sale remodeling. Also consider hiring a professional home stager. Do whatever will bring you the best return for the changes you make.
#4.- M I S L E A D I N G D E A L INFORMATION is a sure-fire deal killer.
Photos that are highly edited or property described as an “approved” short sale when a bank approved a previous offer and will require new offers to go through an approval process again, are common examples of misrepresentations. TIP: It is important for Sellers and Agents to be upfront and honest. Enough said!
#5.- OVERBEARING SELLERS can easily and often inadvertently queer a deal. TIP: Back away and let the real estate agent do his job. These 5 Deal Killers above are in the seller's control. There is however another issue that kills many deals that is not in the seller's control - many appraisals are coming in less than contract price due to the large number of distressed property sales. This is a big problem with financed purchases. So pricing the property correctly is even more important.

‘We are the Champions’ Aventura softball team scores back-to-back championships
BY BARI AUERBACH
St. Louis has the Cardinals – but the City of Aventura is proud to have “Team Olympia” – scoring back-to-back league championships in the spring and fall of 2011. Going to bat for wining players, team manager Pete Cicale, Jr. explains, “Everyone on our team has strong athletic skills – but you don’t necessarily have to be big or tall to play in any league - you just have to perform well out on the field or at the plate and make the right plays. Sports specific training at the gym can really help anyone step up their game by building endurance, getting stronger and faster.” Although it took a while for the team to start reaching its full potential since its inaugural season back in 2006, welldeserved trophies were decisively earned in the spring and fall of 2011 when Team Olympia’s celebrated back-to-back championship seasons. “At first, we went 0-10; then 2-8; and then we started to turn things around - making it all the way to the playoffs ever since,” Cicale said. Perhaps equally as rewarding as winning championships is the team’s great camaraderie. “At the end of every season, we get the guys together to come over
with their families or significant others to ‘Captain Mike’s’ home for a barbecue,” Cicale said. “We’ve formed great bonds of friendship and that’s what makes playing so much fun – and when we’re having fun, we win!” “We’re really glad that we’ve been able to prove ourselves out there on the field as a competitive team,” Sims said. “We have high expectations and sometimes tend to get a little too serious – but ultimately, we’ve been able to relax that kind of mentality and play better as a result. Over the years, our team has gelled and we’ve gotten to know each other on and off the field - in and out of the gym.” The community is invited to come out and cheer on Team Olympia, currently playing every Sunday morning at Founders Park. The City of Aventura’s Adult Softball seasons run February-May; June-August; and September-December. Leagues are ASA registered and all teams must bat a minimum of ten players. Team roster size is 15 players; bases are 65 feet; and all games are seven innings or one hour and ten minutes. All extra innings are played out until a winner is declared. There are approximately 12 games per season. For more information, phone Founders Park: 305-466-0183 or to contact Team Olympia, phone Pete Cicale, Jr.: 305-932-3500.

Cavalia is returning in March with an all new show, Odysseo BY GABRIELA LAMBERTUS
Cavalia, whose horse-and-human production received standing ovations and critical acclaim in Miami in 2010, has announced that, in partnership with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, it will make Miami its second U.S. tour stop for its all-new show. Set to open Mar. 13, 2012, Odysseo will be performed at the same site as in 2010 — Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami — but this time under a White Big Top more than twice the size. Tickets are available now at <www.cavalia.net> or by calling 1-866-999-8111. Surrounded by awe-inspiring projections and visual effects, some 70 horses and 55 artists embark together on a journey, traveling through amazing natural landscapes. “The horse has been a partner of humanity throughout the ages,” explained Normand Latourelle, president and artistic director of Cavalia. “It’s thanks to horses that humans imagined they could travel to the ends of the earth. “This powerful and natural wonder of an animal enabled mankind to bridge cultures, to create alliances amongst people, and thus to freely roam the planet. He has been one of the most important instruments in the evolution of humanity. This is the essence of Odysseo.”

27,000-square-foot stage. “We’ve created an even bigger big top to put as few limits as possible on our horses and artists, allowing them to play, run, dance, jump and twirl around to their hearts’ content,” Latourelle said. Inside, an immense theater seats 2,290 people with no obstructed views. By redefining the scale and possibilities of a touring space, Odysseo can accommodate even more in the way of equestrian arts, acrobatics, music, multimedia wizardry and special effects, the signature ingredients of a Cavalia show. For its exclusive run in Miami, Odysseo will be presented under the White Big Top at Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami. Tickets are on sale now at the introductory price of $59.50 to $109.50 plus applicable fees for regular tickets. For guests who desire an extraordinary outing, the show can be customized for an extended experience from $144.50 to $199.50, including a Horse Lover’s Package that lets patrons tour the Cavalia stables after the show, and the VIP Rendez-Vous Package which includes a tour of the stables after the show, a cocktail/dinner reception and much more. Why You Can’t Lose Weight BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH
If you have tried diet after diet without shedding pounds, it may not be your fault. In “Why You Can’t Lose Weight: Why It’s So Hard to Shed Pounds and What You Can Do About It”, Pamela Smith, MD, MPH discusses the eighteen most common reasons why you can’t lose weight, and guides you in overcoming the obstacles that stand between you and a trimmer body, including insufficient exercise and sleep, biochemical problems such as insulin resistance and depression, food allergies and thyroid hormone dysfunction. For example, when you’re under constant stress, your body remains in fight-or-flight mode and your adrenal glands pump out excess cortisol, a hormone that suppresses the thyroid’s ability to regulate your weight. The last part of the book can guide you in putting together a customized, easy-to-follow weight-loss program. If you’ve been frustrated by one-size-fits-all diet plans and medications that have not worked, contact our compounding pharmacist who can help you begin your journey to optimal health.

Miami-Dade County recognizes Jason Taylor with his own day
I’ll get back to you by early next week. Let me run that suggestion by the team. I see what you mean. (Ha!ha! It doesn’t mean you agree! – No, this is not part of the response! Don’t press the SEND. . .too late.) Don’t press that button! You know which one. SEND. How many of us have pressed that button in a moment of anger, a moment that is followed by ten minutes of terror and years of living with words that can never be recalled. Heck! (OK, not heck, but this is a family paper.) I can’t believe I sent that to my boss, my manager, my sister-in-law, my kid, reply all—the list goes on and on. Some of us have even gone so far as to write a second email requesting that the first email was sent in error, prompting everyone to run to read what they might have skipped. Ah, me. Life in the connected lane. Are we really saving time? We spend more time mopping up the messes we create with our instant messages than we would have spent cooling down, composing a letter, burning the letter in a can, rewriting the letter and sticking it in a drawer for later because we are out of stamps. So, in service to my fellow interconnected, intergalatic citizens, I have provided a list of

BY ARLEEN GOMEZ
Retired Miami Dolphins player Jason Taylor received resounding applause in Miami-Dade Commission Chambers as he was honored by county officials for his 15-year football career and service to the community. Commission chair Joe A. Martinez presented Taylor a proclamation declaring Jan. 24 as “Jason Taylor Day” in MiamiDade County. He also was commended by Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who gave Taylor the Key to the County, and Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, chair of the Miami-Dade Sports Commission. With a NFL career spanning 15 years, Jason Taylor spent 13 seasons in a Dolphins uniform, becoming a stellar defensive player who collected more sacks than any player in Dolphin history and a NFL record holder for career fumble-return touchdowns. Aside from his exceptional football career, Taylor is known for giving back to his community. In 2004, he established the Jason Taylor Foundation, a non-profit
organization that supports and creates programs to facilitate the personal growth and empowerment of South Florida’s underprivileged children. Since its inception, the Jason Taylor Foundation has contributed more than $2 million in programs and services to more than 40 different organizations, awarded 35 middle school students college scholarships, and annually gives 50 kids $300 back-to-school shopping sprees. Taylor graciously accepted the awards, thanking officials and the community for their support. He also congratulated and signed autographs for Miami Norland High School’s varsity football team, which was honored earlier in the morning for being Class 5A State Champions. “It was privilege to be able to honor Jason Taylor for everything he has contributed to our community,” Martinez said. “His dedication and hard work on and off the field are what makes him a role model. I am confident that whatever endeavor he takes on he will continue to do great things, especially for this community.” For more information, contact Martinez’s office at 305-375-5511.

S. Florida animal shelters offer spay/neuter surgeries for cats BY KATHLEEN LABRADA
In an effort to help reduce the pet overpopulation problem in Southeast Florida, six animal shelters have joined forces to provide spay and neuter surgeries for all owned, feral and free-roaming cats. The weeklong event is taking place from Feb. 21 through Feb. 25. The service is available to all residents of MiamiDade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Surgeries can be scheduled at any one of six convenient locations. There is no limit to the number of cats that any individual can present for sterilization. The cost is the same at all six locations — $15 per cat, which includes the sterilization surgery, rabies and FVRCP vaccines and a microchip. Appointments are required and can be scheduled by calling the desired location.
“The goal is to sterilize 1,650 cats over the course of the five-day event,” said Alex Muñoz, director, Miami-Dade County Animal Services. “This is a critical step to reducing the number of cats and kittens received in shelters throughout the spring. While kittens are cute, the sad truth is that there are often more kittens than there are homes for them.” Southeast Florida Region Spay/Neuter Coalition Members: • Broward County Animal Care and Adoption, 1-954-359-1313 ext. 9271; • Humane Society of Broward County, 1-954-895-3605; • Humane Society of Greater Miami, 305-696-0800; • Miami-Dade Animal Services, 3-1-1 • Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, 1-561-233-1261, and • Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, 1-561-686-3663.
East Ridge Hosts First Olympic Challenge On February 4, East Ridge Retirement Village, known for its camaraderie and sense of community among residents and staff was divided. Neighbor competed against each other and employees battled for bragging rights. The friendly competition was part of the life care community’s first annual East Ridge Olympic Challenge. Teams of residents representing six nations competed in five grueling events which included Equestrian Irons, Bocce Ball, Golf, Bowling and Ball Vaulting. Each of the community’s departments then rooted for their respective resident teams. “The athletes who participated should be especially proud of themselves,” said Wellness Coordinator Suzana Delgado, who organized the event. “They trained very hard and continue to take advantage of the host of health and wellness programs available at East Ridge.” The East Ridge Olympic Challenge— complete with torch lighting ceremony— was attended by 500 guests including residents, families, community supporters and vendors/sponsors.
Winston Park Middle School’s cheerleaders and Quartet + One hyped the crowd and players from Pinecrest Premier Soccer Club served as referees for the Challenge. Author and long-time Miami Herald humor columnist Dave Barry officially commenced the competition with “Let the games begin!”. For residents Jay and Louise Lockwood, 58 years of marriage was put to the test when the two squared off against each other on opposing teams. She represented the United States while he was on Team Brazil. The Lockwoods joined two other competing couples—George and Nancy Fehr and Barrie and Sandra Reed. Judy Mangasarian could be seen (and heard) cheering her mother, Betty White, and Team Armenia onto victory. “She’s playing hard and having a great time,” she said. “It’s all in such good fun. The good times never end at East Ridge.” Cutler Bay VIPs also attended the event to show support to the Olympians. Vice Mayor Ernie Sochin and Councilmembers Sue Loyzelle and Peggy Bell praised the community’s commitment to seniors. Guests were treated to a special appear-
ance by Essie Faria, a 20-time gold medalist in the Florida Senior Games State Championships. The 77 year old, who began competing at age 70, addressed the audience and assisted in the event’s closing ceremony and award presentation. “The Olympic Challenge is a wonderful activity,” she said. “I encourage everyone to continue being active. Everyone can do something, regardless of age or physical limitations.” The Gold medal was awarded to Team Libya, comprised of George Fehr, Carole Bell, Bonnie Massey and Skippy Rossi. Team USA’s Barrie Reed, Tag Marvel, Elise Henline and Louise Lockwood came in second place and received the Silver award. Bronze went to Team England’s Nancy Fehr, Keith Phillips, Grace Ganser and Gwen North. Team Bolivia (Bob Parkerson, Jackie Smith, Margie Brown and Helen Berner); Team Armenia (Art North Betty White, Ann Burdin and Fran Plummer); and Team Brazil (Carolyn Carter, Jay Lockwood, Sandra Reed and Elaine Koch) finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
