Around Town in Aventura Wrap-up party for 2nd annual AT&T YOUNG STARS SHOWCASE has everyone singing and dancing Vi Living in Aventura was the host for the Wrap-Up party for the young singers and sponsors of the recent 2nd annual AT&T Young Stars Showcase at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center produced by the Aventura Marketing Council.....and just having some great food and showing the video from that evening would have been enough. Vi Living, an upscale senior lifestyle center, held the party in their beautiful Everglades Room and brought out an array of delicious hors d’oeuvres for the party. Costco in North Miami Beach baked a huge sheet cake with the YSS signature purple colors decorating the frosting. But to Ran Oz, Creative Director of the last two AT&T YOUNG STARS SHOWCASE productions, a ‘real’ party has to have more than a great ambience and food, and he had some plans up his sleeve for that evening. Ran owns CooLAM Dance Studios and CooLAM Dance Productions, and to him, everything should be a ‘production’! As the young singers arrived with their families, they were only too happy to see each other and re-live some of the great memories from the show...and since they were backstage for most of the show, they didn’t have the opportunity to see it. The show’s title sponsor, AT&T, was well represented by Dr. Tee Holloway, Director of Corporate & External Affairs, and his wife Linda; and other sponsors, the “Friends of the Young Stars” attending the Wrap-Up party were Aventura Comm. Bob and Arlene Diamond, Ken Bernstein, Norma from Miami-Dade Comm. Sally Heyman’s office, Alex and Monique Halbertsein, Fernando Levy Hara and Howard and Elaine Adler. Special guest, recording star Chloe Dolandis, who was co-emcee for the showcase, was also there with her mother Mindy. Fortunately, Ira Haber, owner of All in 1 Productions, videotaped the entire show and had DVDs available... but he went the extra mile and created a 14-min. show recap and placed it on YouTube for the world to see and enjoy. (Youtube 2nd annual Young Stars Showcase 2012). The DVD of the show ran for about 30 minutes, and then the real fun began! How to Avoid Faded Glory

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Just about everyone has their moment in life, a special time when they are or were the star. It might have been the touchdown pass or the leading role on stage, or the life-changing invention. You could have been the brilliant scientist, caring humanitarian or a part of a “power couple”. Then time passes and your glory days pass as well. So many things can change your identity. Injury, sickness, divorce, death and age have an impact on your image of yourself and on the world’s image of you. This is a difficult adjustment unless you know how to handle it. When your star dims, it is still possible to keep your glory from fading. Stay in the same milieu. Don’t get benched so to speak. Don’t sit on the sidelines. Don’t stray too far afield. Get back in or stay in the same environment in which you shine. Find

something else you can do within the same sphere that will showcase your talents. Perhaps, you could coach or teach. Perhaps, you could endow an organization that will foster your ideals. Perhaps, you could volunteer and support and encourage others. The best option of all would be if you could still do what you love to do on a different scale. Instead of singing on Broadway or at the opera you might sing for organizations or community groups or charities. The list of possibilities is endless and unlimited. If you stay in the same field then your glory stays with you. Your past remains alive. Your story is told and retold. Your identity is reinforced. Your celebrity is assured. Your sense of yourself and your self-worth is enhanced. Your life has credibility and meaning and purpose. You have the opportunity to leave a bit of a legacy and to impart the knowledge and experience you have amassed to others. on...knowing the need was there. Dr. Mars said that at the end of the day, when the doctors were thanking all the staff and volunteers for this ‘service from the heart,’ their response was to thank Dental Care Group/Aventura Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics for allowing them this opportunity to give back. “This was an incredible day,” said Dr. Mars. “It was a coming together of our team and a community of patients, volunteers and generous corporate partners to provide dental care to hundreds of patients who would not have received den-

tal care without our efforts. Most of the patients were either unemployed or disabled or in a serious financial situation, so this made our efforts all the more gratifying. One patient said, ‘I have not been able to go to the dentist in years and you doctors gave me a gift today.’ One patient even gave us a box of candy and a thank- you card!” Added Dr. Coussa, “Dentistry from our Hearts” was our way of giving back to the community. By volunteering our team, dental office and time, we were able to put smiles on the faces of hundreds of people today.”

The Great Depression: The Eagle v. The Chicken

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS In fighting the Great Depression in 1934, President Roosevelt’s New Deal administration chose as a test case the most unlikely defendants in criminal proceedings for allegedly violating the Code of Fair Charges by the newly adopted National Recovery Administration (NRA). Charges were leveled against four first generation immigrant sons of a rabbi, the Schechter brothers of Brooklyn, who engaged in the Kosher chicken business in strict conformity with Jewish dietary law. The Schechter brothers would soon move from obscurity to the “center of the debate about the New Deal.” According to author Amity Shlaes, “The Forgotten Man,” the indictment charged that the method that the brothers engaged in business violated the Code, including refusal to price fix. Consumer prices went up markedly under the Code. Small businessmen complained that without the right to compete on price, the giant corporations were price fixing them out of the marketplace. At trial, Martin

Schechter testified that the chicken business was highly competitive, that customers would shop around, “Chicken dealers will walk into my place and wouldn’t like my price, they would go out again.” The charge of selling unfit chickens came down to one questionable chicken, which, on autopsy, would have been difficult for Schechters to detect before sale. The jury found the brothers guilty. They became the shame of the Jewish neighborhood. The Schechter appeal soon reached the Supreme Court. The Schechter’s attorney argued, among other points, that his clients did not engage in interstate commerce and adherence to the Code would drive them out of business. He argued, “The whole Code must fall.” “Nine to nothing,’ the Schechter brothers kept repeating, with tears in their eyes, as the Supreme Court declared the NRA unconstitutional. “Mrs. Joseph Schechter, of Brighton Beach, displayed her poem to the press, entitled, “Now That It’s Over.” No more excuses to hide our disgrace, With pride and satisfaction I’m showing my face. For a long long time to be kept in suspense, sarcastic remarks made at our expense. I’m through with that experience I hope for all my life, and proud again to be, Joseph Schechter’s wife.”

Each group was given 5 seconds to sing at least 1 line from a song with the word “love” in it, and the first ten rounds were fairly easy — after all — don’t most songs have the word “love” in them somewhere! As the game progressed, and it became harder and harder to come up with songs, the parents and sponsors started chiming in...by the end of

the game, practically the entire room was participating, and laughing so hard they could hardly talk. Afterwards, the young singers started singing... some with songs they knew, and some with songs they never rehearsed before...parents and siblings sang and danced as well... and the energy level kept on growing! “We are excited to already be working on our 3rd annual YOUNG STARS SHOW-

Julia’s Journey Julia Yarbough SEASON OF CHANGE How many of you remembered to change your clocks this past weekend; setting the time to “Spring Forward” and start the week with a fresh perspective on time? This seemed like the perfect opportunity to discuss the passage of time and what seems to be something of an epidemic for successful professionals: career transition. Since stepping away from my own career with WTVJ-NBC 6 in October, 2009 I have noticed I am far from alone in my new, unchartered and still frightening new world of “reinvention.” The first few weeks after making such a drastic change felt euphoric. Like a kid who gets to spend day after day at Disneyworld. The next few months felt like the most amazing vacation ever; doing whatever I wanted, when I wanted and sleeping until I felt rested. But then weeks, turned into months and then beyond. Now I have begun to wonder, “Am I losing my mind? Does this lack of specific career direction make me a bum? Why does everyone else seem to know what they want out of their careers, but I still can’t decide?” A small voice in my head whispers... L-O-S-E-R... BUT HOLD ON! Turns out I am not losing my mind, nor am I a bum. I have come to this conclusion based on an extremely unscientific poll - basically chatting with others who are in the same boat. Exhibit A: My dear friend Rhonda Smith. After years of climbing the career ladder as a high-powered marketing consultant, breast cancer changed the course of her life. She beat the disease but since, has been on a new career path that focuses on

bringing education and awareness to other women to make healthier life choices. It’s a slow transition to turn her passion, www.breastcancerpartner.com into a revenue supporting project. We often tease each other of who will be living under a bridge first. Exhibit B: My friend Johnny Holliday. He is a devoted husband and father and serves the U.S. Air Force. He loves his work. But his heart’s passion is music. Johnny is a South Florida jazz musician who plays a mean saxophone! He too is in a transition of sorts. He would love for music to take a larger role in his life. Thus far, reality and economics dictate-his passion remains second string. Exhibit C: A good friend, John is a pharmacist by trade. A very successful one at that. But like many Americans, downsizing and cutbacks changed his world. He has dibbled and dabbled in various positions, wanting to apply his scientific experience but doing so with a passion to help others. We spoke recently and I asked him what he was up to. He paused, smiled, shrugged his shoulders and said, “Well... a little of this, a little of that. I haven’t quite figured out what comes next.” Phew! I feel validated. It’s not just me. Many of us - women and men - with amazing talents, passions, drive and focus are in the same boat. Maybe with a new season of change the answers will come to all of us who are in career transition.

Advice for getting through a divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

I found out that my ex changed the address at the school to his address only. Now I don’t get the kids’ report cards and other notifications. Is there legal action I can take? Rule #1, avoid legal recourse if at all possible. So many times people run to their attorney to show their ex “who’s boss”. The financial and emotional toll it will take on you isn’t worth it. Very simply, go to the school’s registrar and explain the situation. There should be a way that they can flag your account so no changes can be made that involve your name and address. Then take that money you would have spent on an attorney and go have a spa day. My ex will never accommodate any schedule changes that I may have, yet he expects me to accommodate all of his. How can I coparent with someone who is unreasonable? Simply put, you can’t. There are two issues here — one is scheduling and the other is co-parenting. Let me address the scheduling problems. Depending on your MSA, there might be certain times spelled out that you will need to accommodate him. But, in general, it is your choice if you want to change the schedule. If he is asking you to change and it benefits your child or it is not an imposition for you, then by all means do it, but do it with the acceptance that it might not be reciprocated. Leave that expectation at the door. Divorce is not a two-way street; depersonalize it. Stop looking at his refusal to switch as a way to get back at you. That might be the case, but if it is, do you think you are going to change that? Change if you want and if not, just tell him by email or text that the switch isn’t possible this time. The second issue

here is the term co-parenting. Let me define terms here as I’m applying them. There is joint custody/parallel parenting where each parent does their own thing when they have the children. Rules, values, parenting style and philosophy are different. Then there is co-parenting where the parents work together on every aspect of their children’s upbringing. If you are divorced from someone who is unreasonable, trying to get back at you or using the kids as a pawn, the reality is such that you won’t be able to co-parent. The focus is not the child, but you. If you have an ex that doesn’t see parenting the same way you do, take a deep breath, know that you are in this for the long haul and be consistent with the structure you have set up in your home. Let go of trying to get him to see parenting your way. Put your focus on being the best parent you can be.

You might want to explore the option of you and your ex coming up with an agreement and then you have an attorney look it over for your protection. Remember the saying, “Every man for himself”? Take Madison home... until the end

Madison, turning 6 years old this year, was born on October 4, 2006. She was sent home from the hospital with a clean bill of health. By her first birthday, Madison was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Type 2. An almost certain deathsentence for children, it is the 2nd worst type of SMA and the #1 genetic killer of children. Due to rapid deterioration of Madison’s muscles, she lost her ability to crawl or walk, like other children. By the age of 2 years-old Madison used a power wheelchair for everyday movement like playing in her home or going out with her family. She depended on a BiPap machine

for breathing support to sleep at night and the Vest for lung therapy including respiratory support. She must wear feet braces, knee braces, wrist splint and a critical body brace to support her spine. Her home is redesigned with ramps, therapy equipment and more just so this bright and playful child has the same comforts we all take for granted. Madison, from birth, was healthy and right on target in all milestones and she was even considered a strong baby up until 6 months. At around seven months of age, they noticed that Madison was having difficulty bearing weight on her legs and stopped using her walker and bouncy seat altogether at eight months. After repeated appointments to the Pediatrician, Orthopedic and Neurologist her parents were able to get some testing done. The Neurologist ordered blood work be taken on Madison because she suspected Spinal Muscular Atrophy; if she had it, the blood work would be definitive since this is genetic. When they went to the Neurologist to get the test results the specialists confirmed Madison had SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) Type II. and then told them to take her home, make her as comfortable as possible until the end. They were handed the phone number of pediatric hospice and left feeling an overwhelming despair. Determined to fight for their daughter’s life her parents tried to reach out to find support groups, organizations and other families within the community to help them and their family cope. After months of searching and not finding any, Jennifer, Madison’s mom decided to start the 1st South Florida SMA Chapter to bring families of this rare disease together for support. Jennifer holds SMA support meetings, raises awareness in the community, does numerous fundraisers to raise funds for

research, she makes hospital and home visits to newly diagnosed families and gets them needed resources. In past years, Jennifer and her family decided not to exchange Christmas presents and instead adopted another SMA family who needed it more than they did. The Smith family are currently organizing fundraisers for Madison, with the goal of raising enough money for a much needed power wheelchair that costs approximately $30,000.00. Madison’s insurance benefit only covers up to $2,000. Her previous fundraisers helped pay for adequate wheelchair van transportation, home accessibility modifications, copays for specialists & hospitalizations, an iPad for another friend suffering with SMA, and also funeral costs for her friend, William Odgen, who past away from SMA at age 9. Madison and her family invite the entire South Florida community to participate,

sponsor or donate toward the 5th Annual Madison’s Wish Charity Golf Tournament. “Last year’s golf tournament was a tremendous success for all involved” says Madison’s mom Jennifer. Rising gas prices affect all aspects of our lives

Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH In today’s economy, rising gasoline prices affect not only what it costs to fuel our cars but every aspect of our lives. For example, the groceries we buy — which arrive in gasoline-powered trucks — go up as well. Although it not only causes consumers to stay home, it causes everyone to have to cut their budget to accommodate other important areas. It turns out domestic oil demand is near record lows at the very same time U.S. oil supplies remain at high levels, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. I spoke to one Miami driver who blames speculators for hiking the price of wholesale oil. He said that is who is behind the recent spikes in local gas prices. In fact, some stations by Miami International Airport already are selling Regular-Unleaded for $4.39 a gallon! “The politicians better watch out what they are doing to the investors who are driving up prices?” this driver insisted. According to a report by the House Natural Resources Committee, between 1999 and 2007 the number of drilling permits on public lands has increased by more than 361 percent, yet gasoline prices continued to skyrocket. However, increased leases have not reduced the price of gas. With consumer prices up about 3 percent since last year, overall food and energy costs have risen at their fastest annual rate

since 2008. They’re up more than 6 percent for energy-related costs, and almost 4.5 percent for food prices. So do oil companies need new leases along the OCS (Outer Continental Shelf)? According to the U.S. Minerals Management Service, only 20 percent of the 38.5 million acres of existing leases along the OCS are being used for production. The vast majority of oil and gas deposits along the OCS already are open to drilling. What’s more, 82 percent of the gas in the OCS and 79 percent of the oil in the OCS is available for leasing. Local produce buyers say if gas prices keep rising, food costs will keep climbing too following the expected extra fuel surcharges from shippers. One Norman Brothers produce manager told me, “We’re not seeing it just yet, but it’s coming. It’s still early.” Consequently, a Kendall consumer complained, “I think that’s terrible having to pay extra for fuel products.” Her sentiments are commonplace. The price of oil on world markets climbed again recently, closing above $106 a barrel. Tension in the Middle East is partly to blame, but the rising price of gas at the pump provided political fuel for Republican presidential hopefuls. The surprisingly swift rise in oil prices recently has sent the average price of gasoline up and it’s hurting many families that were already fighting to survive tough economic conditions. The Obama administration says it’s not responsible for this rise in gas prices and insists that the solution to the problem is difficult. According to the administration, there is no easy answer to this problem.

The three phases of a delinquent unit’s life BY MITCH DRIMMER, CAM Community Association Manager

MCollections of delinquent maintenance fees for community associations have unfortunately become a reality these days, a process that can be broken down into three distinct phases: (1) Action when a unit owner misses paymenment; (2) The nitty-gritty of collection; (3) How delinquency is resolved. Step one is making contact with the delinquent unit owner in a timely manner, usually with a courtesy letter. (People forget, checks get lost). And there are times when people simply can’t afford the current month’s payment. That’s when they would welcome a friendly note letting them know a payment plan can be worked out. In its early stage, sending a delinquency to a collection agency or an attorney is not the way to go. Only if the owner fails to contact the association directly is it necessary to escalate a recovery effort, such as calling a professional collections service that has the expertise, systems and resources to resolve such issues. Professional collection companies will contact delinquent owners and advise them of the association’s intentions regarding collection, providing the resources and assistance to an owner to resolve a situation. If initial collection efforts are unsuccessful, the unit can then be scheduled for a lien notice in advance of a foreclosure. The plain and simple fact is that attorneys focus only upon two steps for an association: (a) a notice of lien and (b) foreclosure of title. It’s a good idea for an association to enter into an agreement with collection professionals to defer legal costs and fees until the time when a unit ‘settles out,’ at which

point such costs would be collected. When it comes to the touchy subject of collection legal costs and fees once an association forecloses on title, new options open. With title in hand, the association has power and control over the unit. It can first decide whether or not to rent the unit, monetizing it for the association. A second option is to do nothing and await a bank foreclosure filing for the unit collateral value. The final ‘settle out’ phase is tied to timing in one of three ways: •iWhen the bank finally comes for its cocollateral; • When the unit owner pays up (unlikely, but itit does happen); • When a short sale is made before a bank foforeclosure. If a short sale occurs, both new and old owners are jointly and severally liable for all funds legally owed to the association. Associations should resolve each case in the most favorable manner possible, and as soon as possible. This means maximizing the amount collected and eliminating any outof-pocket costs or risks to the association. Association boards should also remember that when it’s time for a unit to settle out, it’s the title company doing the work for the bank (in most cases). Thus a collections firm working on a merit basis has a great incentive to battle it out with the title company in behalf of the association’s interests. That’s why collection professionals are best suited for collections — because of the time they’ll devote, their strategy and great negotiating skills, as well as their knowledge, experience and the incentive to do the job right.
