Around Town in Aventura Aventura Marketing Council Student Connection visits US Coast Guard Students from Aventura Marketing Council’s (AMC) ten Dade County partner schools recently visited the U. S. Coast Guard Air Station Miami and the U. S. Coast Guard Station at John U. Lloyd State Park in Dania Beach. With the help of Lt. Amy Pomeroy and Bill Dunbar from Air Station Miami and Lt. Meg Naughton from the Dania Beach

Coast Guard Station, the students learned how the Coastguard performs their search and rescue operations, how they handle oil sheen / oil spills, how to tie rope knots and how to carry injured people on Stoke litters. One of the most fascinating parts of the trip for the students was learning about the many great career opportunities that are offered through

Nicole will be reenacting a scene from the opera Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo O m i o b a b b i n o c a ro” Puccini called “O (“Oh My Beloved Father”). This soprano aria tells the story of singlehearted love in the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing and feuding in medieval Florence.

Grief can be a Surprise

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Grief is a feeling. It is an emotional reaction to a thought or event. It is an instinct that is normal, natural and inevitable. Most people would prefer not to feel the sadness that is the result of a loss. They treat the emotion as a weakness or character flaw. They believe that they have to be strong and carry on as if nothing monumental has happened. This is especially true when death is a release. The survivor may feel a sense of relief initially but is surprised when they find themselves mourning the loss. They did not expect to grieve. After all, the deceased seems better off now because the pain and suffering are over. The truth is you will grieve. You will grieve for the deceased and all the sweet things in life that they will no longer experience and for the things that they didn’t get

to do. You may feel sorry for them for many things and for the fact that they had to go before they wanted to go. You will grieve not only for the deceased but for yourself as well. You will grieve for the loss of their companionship. Some of the symptoms of grief may surprise you. You may be caught off guard by the lack of concentration, the changes in eating, drinking or sexual habits and the fatigue. For a while your emotional responses may become muted or non-existent. You may experience physical symptoms or be irritable and anxious. The best way to handle your grief is to recognize the symptoms and be gentle with yourself. Take time out from your usual routine. Don’t expect to carry on as if nothing has happened. Rest. See friends. Do things that you enjoy. Do all of the things that comfort you. Indulge yourself. Honor them. You will gradually come to accept the loss, tolerate it and incorporate it into your being. Your grief will pass but you may still miss them. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Eighty-three exhibitors filled the Newport’s Atlantis Ballroom and huge Mezzanine with display tables chock full of valuable information and special offers. From hospitals to banks to air conditioning contractors to computer services... there was an air of excitement and congeniality as hundreds of business guests started pouring in to enjoy the gracious hospitality of Robert Festinger , COO of The Newport Group, and his team. From the initial planning stages through to the last box being packed up at the end of the evening, the Newport’s team was there: Food and Beverage Manager Michael O’Malley, Banquet Manager who oversaw the logistics and food service; Marketing Director Lance DeTotto who seemed to be everywhere helping exhibitors and guests alike; and Catering Sales Manager Tammy Malamud, who was handling two positions at the time...and did it with a smile! Executive Chef Chris Wong surprised everyone with his new menu of delicious hors d’oeuvres including meatballs, spinach pies and chicken pot stickers “The AMC Expo was a huge success,” said Festinger. It was great to see so many familiar faces, and it was a perfect avenue to expose local and surrounding businesses to our hotel and its amenities. The Fivish also performed in the Atlantis Ballroom to rave reviews, and Parksman Parking president Ben Launerts accepted Ran’s invitation to play the bongo drums to accompany Fivish – and Ben was pretty darn good! Upstairs, brothers Damian and Mark Pratt of ImageSound Americas did some entertaining themselves, by providing in-house music for the night. And to end the perfect evening, the Newport’s door prizes were given out: a two-night, three-day stay at the Newport

2011 Frist Humanitarian Award Nominees announced at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center Aventura Hospital and Medical Center has announced its nominees for the annual HCA Frist Humanitarian Awards. Established in 1971, the awards honor outstanding individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. In recognition of the caring spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr., a founder of HCA, The Frist Humanitarian Awards carry on his legacy by honoring those who follow the same life mission. Physicians, employees and volunteers who demonstrate commitment and dedication to humanitarianism through their chosen field of healthcare are nominated by hospitals around the country. Honorees are recognized at the local level. Manifesting Your Destiny: Does it Work? Julia Yarbough SEASON OF CHANGE How often have you questioned the random events which take place in your life? I have always believed those chance occurances are not chance at all but rather, The Universe working in perfect order to help all us to change, grow and expand our awareness of the world around us. Lately, it seems most everything happening to and/or around me has an interconnective quality guiding me to the next phase. The most recent incident would be almost spooky, except I fully believe everything happens for a reason. Here’s how it went down... So the other night I met up with a girlfriend who I haven’t seen in several years. It’s truly quite pathetic that we haven’t visited, given we live about 10 minutes apart. But like so many working professionals, we let the demands of life get in the way of personal connections. My friend is single, no children, well-educated, fit and attractive and she says most weeks, dateless. We came together to catch up - NOT to discuss relationships, but somehow the conversation turned that direction. She was lamenting her dateless status and not meeting men she considered eligible, attractive and still physically fit in her age range; late 40’s to early 50’s. “Maybe I should take a ski trip and go to Montanta,” she sighed. “I hear there are plenty of eligible single men in that state and it’s beautiful! I would like to go skiing there again.” With a huge grin I replied, “OMG - I

Mount Sinai Medical Center first hospital in Miami to offer patients implantable Neurostimulation System BY JOANNA PALMER New system uses motion sensor technology for the management of chronic pain At Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Lisa Gonzalez was the first patient in Miami to receive the AdaptiveStim with RestoreSensor neurostimulator. Dr. Jonathan Hyde, orthopedic spine surgeon at Mount Sinai, successfully implanted the neurostimulator, the first and only chronic pain treatment that leverages motion sensor technology found in many consumer electronics, such as smart phones and computer gaming systems. This new technology provides effective pain relief and convenience to patients suffering from chronic back and/or leg pain. After enduring four spine surgeries, 41-year old Gonzalez thought nothing would ever relieve her debilitating back pain caused by degenerative disc disease. Routine cortisone injections, often used to decrease inflammation, would cause her left leg to drag. Unable to stand for long periods of time, Gonzalez has spent the better part

of the last six years lying in bed. “I had lost my will to do anything anymore like go to birthday parties. I couldn’t even remember to do everyday things because I was too concentrated on the pain,” said Gonzalez. “Living with this pain has cost me my job, being able to attend my sons’ school functions, my ability to drive or even just standing up for more than five minutes to cook a meal for my family.” Gonzalez sought out Dr. Hyde at Mount Sinai Medical Center after her spine surgeries and treatments provided no longterm relief. A Paris vacation needn’t break the bank BY KOFOED Hotel rates in Paris are sky high, but there is a better, less expensive alternative rent an apartment. A friend suggested I check out a New Jersey-based company, Vacation in Paris, where we found a centrally located one bedroom, one bath apartment for about $170 a night. It was only about five blocks from Les Invalides, where the Army Museum and Napoleon’s Tomb are located. Don’t miss either. The Eiffel Tower is only about ten blocks away. The real appeal of our apartment at 70 Rue St. Dominique was living among Parisians, grocery shopping in stores in a three-block radius, and visiting Rue Cler, a pedestrian-only street about five blocks away which is chock-full of restaurants, a huge cheese-only shop, and others selling pastries, pate, fruits and vegetables, and of course the iconic fish market. The company (www.vacationin paris.com) has a wide range of apartments ranging from studios to luxury two bedroom, two bath units. Want to take a really comprehensive tour of Paris? Then take the Hop On, Hop Off bus which operates every 30 minutes in low season and every 10 minutes in high. The system divides Paris into four zones, each one taking about two hours if you stay on for the full circle, which we did to take note of where and when we wanted to stop. Cost is 29 Euros (about $43) for one day and 32 Euros (about $48) for two, and to see all four zones while stopping would take a minimum of two days. We spent four days and really didn’t cover all of the stops we wanted to make.

Yes, the buses stop at such well-known places as the Louvre, Place de la Concorde, Champs d’Elysee and many more. Many restaurants are hidden away in a warren of alleyways and pedestrian streets. Three-course prix fixe lunches range from 15 to 18 Euros (without wine) - about $22 to $27. Typical are salmon, mussels (prepared in many different ways) and the traditional creme brulee. Of course, as in any city, you’ll find restaurants offering hamburgers, salads and other less expensive food. Charles deGaulle Airport is huge, and a real nightmare. When flying back to Miami, plan to be at the airport at least three hours ahead of time and prepare to walk at least a mile and a half. A good option going to and coming from the airport is Paris Shuttle, which charges $38 Euros (about $57) for two. It’s faster and more convenient than using the train. When we departed, the rate was 1.32, but that is the interbank rate. It really is close to 1.50. The best place to exchange money is at the post office.

The keys to shopping at Sarah’s Tent BY LEVI MEYER

If you haven’t tasted the prepared foods at Sarah’s Tent in The Shoppes at the Waterways, I have two words for you: “Moroccan Fish.” Well, truth be told, I could never sum up the delicious foods offered at Sarah’s Tent Kosher Gourmet Food Market in two words. I could possibly use a series of words like “fresh, pull-apart whole wheat challah” or “savory sweet and sour chicken” or “sweet, bakery-fresh Rugelach” or “scrumptious stuffed grape leaves” or “terrific Thai pasta” to describe just a few of the delicious prepared foods offered. I’ve worked in kitchens my whole life, from my mother’s kitchen to summer camp kitchens and even the kitchen on my base in the Israeli Defense Force. I love to cook, but I must sadly admit that the only cooking I’ve done since I started shopping at Sarah’s Tent is preheat the oven. I can’t help myself and you won’t be able to either. It’s really that good. To shop at Sarah’s Tent, there are some secrets to be shared. The place is full on Thursday night and Friday when the

kitchen seems to go into hyper drive to accommodate for the Shabbat rush of shoppers. So, here’s a little check list to get you started: A wise shopper always starts the shopping experience by visiting your “amigo” at the pizza shop to order a large veggie pizza so it’s hot and ready when it’s time to check out. A wise shopper will preorder a deli or cheese platter for their next Miami Heat Playoff game or any other such event. A wise shopper will stock up to get through the week and be ready to refill the fridge on the following Thursday. A wise shopper will never neglect the bakery section, full of fresh rolls and pita. Finally, a wise shopper should flag down one of the store’s wine experts to learn about the best kosher wines on special that week. The grocery aisles are packed with tons of your favorite kosher and Israeli foods. The refrigerators are stocked full with cheeses and sweets like Emek Edam or Milkys (a personal favorite). Since Sarah’s Tent is a complete grocery store, I was even able to find all the necessary ingredients for home made sushi, including frozen imitation crab meat, seaweed sheets

and ginger. They even have hookah and hookah products available at the front of the store, near the checkout counters. Sarah’s Tent is not just another place for kosher eaters; it’s a must for everyone who loves Middle Eastern food. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and the store hours more convenient than most kosher grocery stores. Living in a large city, we are fortunate to have many kosher restaurants and grocery stores. I’ve been to many of them, and each one has its own charm and advantages. Many come and go, but year in and year out, Sarah’s Tent consistently proves itself to be among the best of the best in kosher

variety, quality and service – not just in Aventura, but in all of South Florida. If you have never been or haven’t visited in a while, I recommend putting Sarah’s Tent on your list of weekly shopping stops.
