Agadir Moroccan Cuisine hosts Aventura Marketing Council

T

he beautiful Agadir Moroccan Cuisine restaurant in the Waterways Shops recently was the site for an Aventura Marketing Council (AMC) luncheon meeting where almost 170 members showed up despite the heavy rains. “Because there was a heavy downpour the entire morning, we expected our attendance to dramatically drop...but it actually increased!” said Claudio Stivelman, partner in Shefaor

Development and AMC Vice Chairman who ran the meeting. “I think that our members had their curiosity piqued with this new restaurant that offers traditional Moroccan/Israeli cuisine.” Owners Ruth and Rachelle Gordon prepared a beautiful buffet complete with Moroccan-style tilapia, Moroccan cigars, Moroccan cole slaw, cous cous and chicken with olives and artichokes. After the entrees and side dishes were served, the Gordons brought out an enormous bowl of fresh fruit salad and tray upon tray of mini sweets...the perfect

ending to the meal. “Agadir can be the right place for your social or corporate event,” said Rachelle Gordon, noting that there is seating for over 150 indoors and another 50+ outdoors overlooking the Waterways Marina. “We also feature a full bar and the hookah lounge open Tuesday- Sunday from 5 p.m. on.” The Aventura Marketing Council changed course slightly and instead of

having a guest speaker, featured a drum circle provided by Ran Oz of CooLAM Dance Productions. In the private VIP Room at Agadir, Ran led a group of willing volunteers on the 15 drums sets that he brought in — eliciting a level of happiness that can only be attained by releasing all your stress by pounding on –––––––––––––––––– See

Make a Dot a Dash

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING You have to stretch a dot to make it into a dash. Stretching draws something into a larger and more elongated size. It extends and broadens the dimensions of something or someone. Human beings are designed to stretch physically and psychologically. Just as stretching is good for your body stretching is good for your soul. You have to reach out and up and go beyond your normal range of thoughts, feelings and activities. You have to try something new. You have to broaden your range of abilities and your responses. You have to be open to developing yourself in an increased, magnified and more significant way. You need to become truly expansive; more genial, amiable, friendly, warm, sociable and more supportive and more encouraging. You have to push yourself just beyond your current state and your current comfort zone. Instead of resentment try understanding. Instead of anger try forgiveness.

Instead of jealousy try acceptance. Instead of fighting try to turn the other cheek. Instead of judgments try compassion. Instead of impatience try patience. Instead of greed and stinginess try generosity. Instead of sadness try happiness. Instead of reacting the way you normally do, try something else. Constantly strive to go a little further and a little deeper. You have to believe in yourself and you have to believe in your ability to change and stretch and to perfect and improve yourself. Believe in your ability to rise above the petty and the mundane. Believe in your ability to accomplish and achieve great things. Believe in your ability to enhance yourself and the world. Just as stretching is good for your body stretching is good for your psyche. It helps you go to new heights. Every dot has the potential to become a dash. Every individual has the potential to be more than they are and to achieve more. Never stop trying to stretch yourself. As you work on stretching yourself, simultaneously, stretch out your hand to others. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864.

Aventura Mall introduces trends for today’s female executive Editor-in Chief, Anna Wintour, recently proved that black and white is always in “Vogue” when she wore a Chanel sheath at the United Kingdom State Dinner. But is she sporting the new neons in her office? Can female executives wear leopard heels without evoking water cooler conversations about “who’s the boss?” When it comes to fashion today, power need not come from clothes but rather from the person. Gone are the days of boxy jackets, power suits and matching skirts and bottoms. Now it is more about personal choices, with the only match being the confidence to carry it off. Add bold color to a pantsuit like in the pictured Theory red fitted jacket and cropped pants from Bloomingdale’s. Add neutral accessories to balance the color and you have a professional look that conveys power balanced by fashion. Love the season’s floral patterns? Combine a floral skirt with a feminine jacket, color-popping bag and neutral heels. Want to try the new neons, but don’t know how to incorporate it into your work wardrobe? Add a pop of color in your shoes, or follow Anna Wintour’s lead

and play up this year’s fashion with bright colored sunglasses. Aventura Mall has everything needed to create a trendy yet powerful look, all to show off a woman’s personal style. South Florida’s #1 shopping destination and anchored by Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom and Macy’s, Aventura Mall boasts 300 specialty stores, ranging from chic, internationally renowned names such as Louis Vuitton, Herve Leger, Burberry, Montblanc, Faconnable, Henri Bendel, Ulysse Nardin, Michael Kors, Breitling and Hugo Boss to many of the most popular and recognized retailers, including Abercrombie & Fitch, Apple, Calvin Klein, Forever XXI, True Religion and Diesel. Aventura Mall is also home to 10 full-service restaurants and an exclusive contemporary art collection featuring 10 installations positioned throughout the shopping center. Located at 19501 Biscayne Boulevard, the mall is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 8 p.m. For more information, call 305-935-1110 or visit aventuramall.com. FDR’s irrational brainstorm - ‘The Tree Army’

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS FDR faced massive unrest with millions unemployed at the beginning of his administration in 1933. Young men, without a job or money to feed their families, posed a particular threat – desperation and idleness could lead to rebellion. FDR, who disliked relief aid, had an irrational brainstorm; substitute work for relief by putting the young men (age 18 to 25) to work doing forestry, a “tree Army.” Roosevelt realized that large scale major projects could take years to get off the ground, however, he set up an unrealistic target; hire 250,000 young men, pay them $1 a day plus food and logging, to drain swamps, do forestry and plant trees in national parks and forests. FDR’s Cabinet opposed the project for logistical reasons. Labor Secretary Frances Perkins argued that there were no facilities to select, mobilize and transport the men, as well “no tents, cots or kitchens.” Calling his project the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) FDR included the Army and

the Forestry Service, replying, “Do it now and I won’t take any excuses!” He publicly announced that relief and job creation were on the way. FDR’s launching of the (CCC) became the most popular New Deal program. The results were so “rapid and competent that it almost defies belief for later generations.” Within four months, nearly 275,000 young men were enrolled in 1300 camps across the country, while helping support families and undertaking much needed projects.” The speed of the mobilization had broken “all American war and peacetime records and it has not been matched since.” The Bonus Army marched on Washington because their veteran benefits, due to the economy, were slashed by 50%. FDR recruited the marchers into the CCC, and waved the age requirement. About 25,000 marchers enrolled, the remainder went home peacefully. Within a few years, some 250,000 veterans also joined the CCC. Over nine years, more than 3 million men served in the CCC. The CCC “planted an astonishing 3 billion trees, protected 20 million acres from erosion, cleared 125,000 miles of trails and became the basis for America’s timber industry” - all on an irrational brainstorm.

Motivation to resist temptation BY BARI AUERBACH If you always have a strong desire to indulge in something decadent, sinful and sweet – or you’re already feeling remorseful about cheating - unable to quell that irresistible urge to splurge on a favorite guilty pleasure…you may need “motivation to resist temptation” so you can remain loyal to a diet or fitness plan and be beach body ready for summer! Temptation: Breakfast treats like pancakes with maple syrup, bacon and buttery eggs can grand slam your diet goals. So before you let that tempting breakfast break your willpower, learn how you can “makeover” your morning meal and still enjoy a delicious way to start your day. Motivation: Envision yourself zipping up your skinny jeans as you prepare “eat clean” breakfast meals each morning featuring bodybuilder favorites including: Oatmeal (avoid flavored varieties); eggwhite omelets with mushrooms and spinach; turkey bacon; protein pancakes prepared with oatmeal, eggwhites and a scoop of protein powder; low-sugar, whole grain cereal with unsweetened almond milk; low-carb Ezekiel bread with sugar-free jam and raw, organic nut butter. Temptation: For lunch, fast food choices are one of the quickest ways to sabotage weight loss goals. But the drive-thru doesn’t have to crash diet success if you know how to order the healthy “have it your way.” Choose smaller portion options of grilled chicken or turkey instead of beef; ask for whole grain bread instead of white; and mustard instead of mayo Then make calorie saving requests like “hold the salad dressing and no cheese please!” Temptation: Lunch was a long time ago and now you’re craving a sweet snack – but don’t succumb to the junk in a vending machine or a candy bar for a quick sugar fix.

Motivation: Think about how much more sustained energy you’ll have and all the fat and calories you’ll cut if you can eat one of the healthy snacks you’ve packed to take along with you when you’re at the office or on the go. Great choices include: Quest or Balance Nimble energy bars (available online); Greek yogurt; whole grain crackers with tbs. raw almond butter; can of ready to eat high protein, sugar free Power Pak Pudding (chocolate or vanilla available at GNC). Temptation: Steak and lobster with chocolate soufflé for dessert certainly sounds tempting – but favorite heavy meals are best saved for special occasions. If you want to look especially slim and trim, light dinners are the way to go so you don’t blow the chance to finally lose those last ten pounds. Motivation: It’s heartening to know hearthealthy food is conveniently available if you don’t like to cook. Order from restaurants like Juice & Java or Miami Juice that serve grilled chicken and tilapia platters with vegetables and quinoa (looks like rice but rich in protein); or prepare your own healthy dinners with Orange Roughy (a light, white fish available in the frozen section at Publix); wild salmon; chicken or turkey breast. Add in large portions of green vegetables without butter or other sauces and limit carbs – especially white rice or white potatoes. Brown rice and sweet potatoes are more diet friendly, lower-glycemic choices. And PS always think “out of the box” when you’re tempted to order pizza!

Turnberry Hotel Group ‘promotes success’ of Tina Kilner and Leslie Weil BY BARI AUERBACH

Ever wonder how successful executives reach the top? Bet your bottom dollar it wasn’t just luck for Tina Kilner, recently promoted to Area Director of Revenue Management for Turnberry Hotel Group; and Leslie Weil, promoted to General Manager of Hampton Inn Hallandale Beach/Aventura! Reviewing both Kilner and Weil’s extensive hospitality industry resumes, it’s easy to see why Turnberry Hotel Group certainly “lucked out” when these two ambitious leaders joined the Turnberry team and began working their way up to the top propelled by a “good isn’t good enough” winning philosophy. Kilner’s over 15-year career with Turnberry Hotel Group started in 1995, when she was hired as Executive Secretary to the General Manager at the Holiday Inn Sunspree in Daytona Beach. In 1998, she transferred to Orlando to become part of the pre-opening team for the new Orlando Courtyard Downtown, holding various positions until ultimately being promoted to Assistant General Manager. In 2002, Kilner relocated to Aventura to lead the pre-opening team for both the Hampton Inn Hallandale Beach/Aventura and Residence Inn by Marriott at Aventura Mall. Post- opening, Kilner held the title of General Manager of the Hampton Inn until she transferred to Nashville, where she was General Manager of the Union

Station Hotel, a Historic Hotel that is now part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Ultimately, in 2007, she transferred back to South Florida as General Manager at the Hampton Inn. In February 2012, Turnberry Hotel Group promoted Kilner once again – this time to Area Director of Revenue for South Florida, encom-

passing Courtyard by Marriott, Residence Inn and Hampton Inn. Weil’s path to success began when she was hired by Turnberry Hotel Group in 2002, after completing an internship at the Courtyard by Marriott while studying Hospitality Management at Florida International

University. Starting out as a front desk clerk at Hampton Inn, she was soon promoted to Front Desk Supervisor in 2003; and by 2004, she was Guest Services Manager. Beyond all her promotions, Weil celebrated becoming a new mom in 2006 and in 2007 began working part-time as Administrative Assistant/Sales Coordinator at Hampton Inn, then promoted to staff accountant at the corporate office. In 2009, she transferred to Residence Inn to be Operations Coordinator – but it wasn’t long before she was promoted again to Operations Manager in 2010 and eventually Assistant General Manager in 2011. Now, Weil is happy to be back at Hampton Inn, where her newest name plate reads “General Manager.” “Through hard work and dedication, Tina and Leslie have worked their way up through the ranks,” said Turnberry Regional Director Bill Gorman. “We believe their inspiring leadership skills coupled with strong hotel operations background will further enhance the continued success of Turnberry Hotel Group.”

Turnberry Hotel Group, a division of Turnberry Associates, provides world-class asset and hotel management for luxury, fulland select-service hotels including the Aventura area’s Courtyard by Marriott, Residence Inn and Hampton Inn Hallandale Beach/Aventura. Curing paralysis is the goal at Buoniconti ‘Party in Park’ fundraiser BY RAQUEL GARCIA

On a recent balmy Saturday night, several blocks south of city hall in downtown Coral Gables were barricaded against traffic. Instead of cars cruising around the Biltmore Way roundabout, canopied tables, chairs and tents filled with delightful dishes and wines welcomed guests at the “Party in the Park.” Presented by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida and sponsored by Bacardi, the inaugural fundraiser event benefited The Buoniconti Fund, the fundraising arm of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. “I don’t care for myself really, I am adjusted,” said 28-year-old part-time Buoniconti Fund staff member Ernesto Velazquez as he sat enjoying the cool sunset breeze with cousin Henry Fonseca. “It’s to help the kids and give them a chance to walk again.” Confined to a wheelchair since being hit by a drunk driver at 10 years old, Velazquez seems to be a wise old (handsome and self-possessed) soul in his elegant black dress shirt and military crew cut with detailed tattoo art along his biceps. “One of the most ironic things to me is

Mount Sinai Medical Center celebrates National Nurses Week Mount Sinai recognizes 24 outstanding nurses and five nursing scholarship recipients

BY JOANNA PALMER

Nurses at Mount Sinai have many roles and responsibilities. From medical/surgical nurses to nurse educators, nurse practitioners and nurse researchers, they all go about their jobs with passion for the profession and a commitment to patient safety. Each year, Mount Sinai joins the nation in celebrating National Nurses Week in honor of these dedicated individuals, who represent the largest group of professionals in healthcare. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, and continues through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. As part of the Nurses Week festivities, Mount Sinai recognized 24 outstanding nurses during an awards program on Wednesday, May 9, in the hospital’s Harris Garden. Huong Phan was named the 2012 Nurse of the Year. Phan, who has been part of the Mount Sinai family for just over a year, was among 24 individuals named “Nurse of the Unit,” based on nominations by their colleagues and directors. She was praised for the way she cares about her patients, as well as her professionalism, patience and enormous team spirit. The awards were made possible through the Harris Institute of Nursing, which recognizes nurses for their professionalism, compassion and their dedication to patient care. The late Sidney Harris

established the institute as a way to honor the nursing staff that cared for his late wife, Ruth, during her hospitalization at Mount Sinai. In addition, five employees received scholarships to defray the cost of their nursing school expenses. Presented annually since 1994, the $1,000 scholarships are made possible by Jane and Jerrold Goodman and Goodman’s mother, the late Ruth Schwartz. The scholarships are awarded to full-time employees based on their work, school performance and their demonstration of good customer service skills. Congratulations to all Mount Sinai Nursing award winners and scholarship recipients!
