A Pilgrimage to your Past
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING A Pilgrim is a person who travels to a sacred place. A Pilgrimage is the journey the pilgrim makes. It is a journey to a nostalgic or sentimental place. It is a journey with emotional significance. It is undertaken for a specific purpose. A considerable amount of time and distance is usually involved. It is a journey the individual feels compelled to make accompanied by a very strong yearning. There are ancillary benefits from a pilgrimage to your past. It often brings a mature understanding of who you were and who you are now. You can see with adult eyes, your life and your relationships. You can see if your memories, your perceptions and your feelings hold up and whether or not they are true. Reliving and re-experiencing happy times can confirm your identity and validate those memories that it was a happy time
and place and you were happy. It is a good idea if you are feeling sad or disoriented in life, to go back and look for past happiness. Things may not be as you remember them. The place may be gone or drastically changed but there is still value in making the trip. After a loss a pilgrimage can make the bereaved feel closer to the departed. Part of your departed’s essence is still there. You are walking the streets that you walked together. You are seeing the people and places that you saw together. It can help the survivor to accept their loss on a different level. It can bring closure of a sort and serve as a final farewell. Although, temporarily, there may be increased feelings of longing for the loved one and for the good times it can be psychologically very healing. People do not usually return to places that were unhappy or painful. However, these journeys can also bring closure and healing. HISTORICALLY YOURS According to historian Robert A. Caro (The Passage of Power), when Lyndon Johnson became president on the assassination of Kennedy on November 22, 1963, civil rights leaders had serious doubts about Johnson. Aside from his southern roots, was his “twenty-year record that began with his arrival in Congress in 1937 and lasted through 1956: a perfect 100% record of voting against every civil rights bill that had ever made it to the floor, even bills aimed at ending lynching.” In 1957, however, Senate Majority Leader Johnson had “rammed through the first civil rights bill since 1875 and another in 1960, however, both bills were weak, made meager advances toward social justice and were regarded by liberals as mere political opportunism; an attempt to lessen northern opposition to his presidential candidacy.” Suddenly, President Johnson had more power and “it did not take him long to reveal what he wanted to do with it.”
As he prepared to deliver his first major address as President before Congress on November 27, his close advisors warned not to emphasize civil rights, as “it would antagonize the southerners who controlled Congress, whose support he needed for the rest of his presidency and a civil rights bill had no chance of passage anyway.” Kennedy’s effort in 1963 to pass a civil rights act was totally blocked in a “logjam” by both a southern DemocratRepublican coalition and a conservative coalition. Johnson “not only broke the congressional logjam, he broke it on civil rights.” In his speech before Congress, Johnson invoked Kennedy’s name, stating, “No memorial oration or eulogy could more eloquently honor President Kennedy’s memory than the earliest possible passage of the civil rights bill for which he fought so long. We have talked for one hundred years or more about equal rights. It is time now to write it in the books of law.” Johnson used every bit of strategy as well tactics of which he was a master. After a half year of struggle, led by Johnson, the civil rights bill was passed in 1964. Johnson had demonstrated the “pragmatic potential in the American presidency.”

Homeowner Association documents must be current Most people who buy houses in a homeowners’ association understand the restrictions in the community’s covenants and restrictions, which allow associations to maintain uniformity among the various parcels. What some homeowners don’t know is that if these covenants and restrictions aren’t renewed within thirty years of recording, they may expire and become unenforceable. The Marketable Record Title Act (“MRTA”) provides that a person who holds title to land for thirty (30) years or more has record title to the land free and clear of restrictions and covenants. This means that if homeowners’ associations do not take steps to preserve their covenants and no other reinstatement of the restrictions and covenants occur, homeowners can argue that the covenants are no longer enforceable. According to Joshua Krut, a partner with Weiss Serota Helfman Pastoriza Cole & Boniske, MRTA creates potential problems for homeowners’ associations whose governing documents are more than 30 years old. “Essentially, the homeowners’ association can be faced with the situation of homeown-
ers arguing that the association’s covenants are no longer enforceable and have expired if the association does not take the appropriate steps to protect their covenants ,” he said. To preserve its covenants, Krut encourages associations to file a statutory “Notice to Preserve” in the public records before the covenants expire in accordance with Chapter 720 of the Florida Statutes. If an association fails to pursue the process described above before the Covenant expires, the preservation of the association’s covenants and restrictions has the potential to become much more difficult. It is important that homeowners’ associations review the dates on their governing documents and amendments with their attorneys in order to determine whether MRTA presents and issue for their association, says Krut. LET’S TALK CARS The 2012 Range Rover Evoque is a good-looking sport utility vehicle that is selling like those proverbial hotcakes in the U.S. market. American consumers apparently like this fuel-efficient SUV, the smallest and lightest one the company has ever produced. Dubbed a premium compact, the Evoque is a stylish vehicle with sporting looks and typical Range Rover craftsmanship, luxury, performance, along with the legendary multiterrain capability. It is offered in two models — coupe and five door — and in three trim lines — Pure, Prestige and Dynamic. Evoque has bold exterior styling with a sloping roofline and a relatively compact footprint. It’s that time of year again – school’s out, no more homework and children have lots of free time to have fun. But during summer, with the constant outdoor play – including water activities and, of course, the hot weather – parents should be extra cautious about the hazards to their children’s safety. Here are some important safety tips that can help keep your children out of danger, and out of the emergency room. WATER SAFETY • Never leave a child alone in the water or near the water, not even for a minute to answer the telephone. Children should swim only with adult supervision – even if they are good swimmers. • Floatation devices and inflatable toys are just that – toys. They do not replace adult supervision in the swimming pool, a kiddie pool or a bathtub. It only takes seconds for a child to drown. If you have a backyard pool or live on the water, you need to have layers of protection to protect your children. These include: window or door locks/alarms, self-latching pool fencing; a Shepherd’s Crook or rescue ring should be available, have a telephone nearby and post emergency numbers and your address by that telephone. • No diving into the water – always go in feet first to protect the head and neck. • Select swimming sites that have lifeguards available. Never swim in unguarded lakes or canals because there may be many dangers lurking just beneath the surface of the water. • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Due to the time it may take for paramedics to arrive, CPR skills can make the difference between life and death. • If you see someone in trouble in the water, “Throw Don’t Go.” Do not jump in any body of water to rescue someone because they may pull you under. Throw them a rope or rescue ring. BIKE SAFETY • Always wear a helmet when bike riding. It’s the law, and it can prevent head injuries and even death from a bicycle accident. Helmets and other safety gear should also be worn when skateboarding, skating, riding scooters and ATVs. • Stay in control, be predictable and do
JACKSON HEALTH SYSTEM not let more than one person ride a bike; no towing! • Watch out for hazards, such as loose gravel, potholes, broken glass and stray dogs. • Make sure your children wear bright colors when biking. Teach them that just because they see the driver, that does not mean the driver sees them. • Observe all signs, traffic lights and street and sidewalk markings; ride single file; and use a steady front white light, a steady red rear light as well as reflectors when riding after dark. SUN PROTECTION • The sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so try to keep your children out of direct sunlight during this time of day. • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all children over six months old – and reapply it every two hours or more if swimming. Use sunscreen even when you’re in the shade. • Children should drink plenty of fluids; they are susceptible to heat exhaustion and dehydration. BUG BITE SAFETY • Keep your children safe from bug bites by applying safe and effective insect repellents, such as those with DEET, citronella and soybean oil to the outside of clothing and exposed skin. • Never apply the repellent directly to children’s hands and faces. Rub it into their necks and ears, staying away from their mouths and ears. • Dusk and dawn are the worst times for bugs, so stay indoors during these times or wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. Summer is really heating up! As the temperatures start to rise, customers sometimes notice their electric bill rise as well. Fact is, the two are linked, but there are simple things you can do to keep your bill low during the summer months. Weather is the main cause of higher electric bills As outside temperatures go up, your air conditioner works longer to get the inside temperature down to a comfortable temperature, causing an increase in energy costs. In the summer time, air conditioning can account for half or more of electric bills, with outside temperatures directly affecting how often and how long systems must run to cool homes. How to keep your summer electric bill low FPL customers have the lowest electric bill out of all 55 utilities in the state, but it’s nice to know that you can make your bill even lower by using some energy efficiency tricks to counter the effects of warmer weather. For example, did you know that for every one degree higher you set your indoor temperature, you can save about 5 percent on your monthly cooling costs? Check out these additional tips to help keep out excess light and heat: Shade window and glass doors that face east and west, as they are the most prone to letting unwanted heat into your home. Consider shading those areas with mature size plants (with proper distance away from power lines), awnings and window coverings. Weather stripping is an inexpensive solution to help reduce the amount of air that enters or escapes your home through doors and windows. Types of weather stripping include V-shaped vinyl, adhesive-backed foam, spring metal and door sweep. Caulking is another way to reduce unwanted airflow. It is only worthwhile when done as part of another project. Use silicone or siliconized-acrylic caulk because they have the longest life span, work well on most surfaces and will maintain their elasticity. Adding insulation to your home can help reduce heating and cooling costs. Homes built after 1982 are required to have R-19 insulation, which is the level we recommend. However, if your home was built before 1982, you may benefit from adding insulation. If you’re trying to get in better shape, you probably already know what you should be doing – but here are some “Just Don’t Do It!” pitfalls you definitely don’t want to derail your success: Don’t Bring Home the Bacon: Before indulging in BK’s new “Bacon Sundae” with a whopping 510 calories, 61 g. sugar and 18 g. fat, try less fattening treats like Skinny Cow ice creams, frozen yogurt or fruit pops – and if you simply have to bring home the bacon, make it turkey bacon – a more healthful choice! Don’t Buy a Better Body: It’s not a lie that lipo and extreme weight loss programs are only “quick fix” solutions – but to achieve longlasting fitness goals, “knowledge is power.” Once you know how to keep your metabolism revving and get lean by eating healthful meals and snacks every three to four hours; and start exercising at least a few times a week, instead of helping to pay for the surgeon’s Mercedes, the real payoff can be becoming “fit for life!” Don’t Twist & Shout: Did you know twisting and side-bend motions holding weights can develop your obliques and actually make your waist appear wider? I’ve been divorced for four years and have a teenage son. I work freelance, but my support is my alimony. My concern is, should I go back to work during this difficult teenage time or should I stay home and take advantage of my situation until I have no other choice financially? Returning to the work force “when you have no other choice” will be too late. If you are relying on alimony with no other means of support, I would invite you to come up with a serious financial plan. Yes, teenage years can be challenging, but those years also free you up because your child is becoming independent. I do believe you can be a responsible mom and continue to guide your son even if you work. You will have some restructuring to do, but in the end you will have financial security. One thing to look at is whether your alimony is modifiable. If you go back to work, can your ex take you back to court to lower your alimony and/or child support? If so, calculate if it is financially in your favor to work outside the home. Factor in what you will make, what if anything you will lose if the alimony is modified, taxes, etc. As moms our priority is always our children, but you also have to take your future into account. You’re not being selfish, you are being smart. Financially, I am a disaster; I can’t seem to get a handle on my finances. I can’t figure out why it’s so hard for me since I took care of all the finances when I was married. Any suggestions? Since you managed the finances
before, it’s not a matter of knowing what to pay or organizing your bills, it’s a matter of mindset; you are still living in the old one. Maybe when you were married you could get manicures every two weeks and belong to the country club or go out to dinner twice a week. You need to step back and look at your budget now. Women get into trouble with their finances for many reasons. Perhaps they don’t want to adjust their lifestyle or their kids put pressure on them to continue with vacations as before and guilt sets in. Or, quite simply, they don’t know how to live on a budget. The figures you see in front of you are exactly what you have. No checkbook gremlins are going to come at night and add zeros to your balance. Be honest about your situation now, as painful as reality may be. It will save you tons of stress later caused by debt. MSMC Plays Key Role in FDA Approval of New Alzheimer’s Disease Dianostic Agent First and only radioactive diagnostic agent approved for PET Imaging of a living brain
BY JOANNA PALMER The Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Florida, was one of a select few sites throughout the country chosen to participate in a clinical trial that resulted in the FDA approval of Amyvid. It is the first and only diagnostic agent approved for PET imaging of a living brain in adults under evaluation for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other causes of cognitive decline. Currently, only a brain autopsy at the time of death can provide confirmation that an individual suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. However, Amyvid enables doctors to make a more definitive diagnosis in living patients. Amyvid, which is given through an injection, binds to amyloid plaques – a hallmark characteristic of Alzheimer’s – allowing the plaques to be detected using PET scan images of the brain. Amyloid plaques are abnormal clumps of brain cells mixed with beta-amyloid protein. A negative Amyvid scan allows physicians to conclude that no amyloid plaques are present and, thus, rule out a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. “This tool is extremely helpful to physicians in ruling out AD as nationally one in five patients who are initially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s ultimately show no signs of the disease in a brain autopsy,” stated Dr. Ranjan Duara, medical director of The Wien Center at Mount Sinai. Dr. Duara, the principal site investigator for the clinical trial at Mount Sinai, served as the national advisor for the design and interpretation of the overall study. The Wien Center is also the home of the State of Florida Brain Bank. As such, Dr. Duara’s team at Mount Sinai also analyzed and processed all the brains in South Florida that were part of the clinical trial. A positive scan indicates moderate to frequent plaques are present, but does not establish a diagnosis of AD; however, it does help physicians assess their patients by

This means they may be at an increased risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease,” said Duara. “That is why the development of Amyvid is a major advance in the battle against Alzheimer’s. It allows us to potentially intervene before symptoms of the disease surface.” Beginning June of 2012, a limited number of radiopharmacies will be distributing Amyvid with increased distribution toward the end of the year. Mount Sinai will potentially be one of the South Florida sites that will have Amyvid available as a diagnostic agent.
