Albatross Metaphor and Paradox
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Saying, thinking, believing or being told that you have an albatross around your neck implies that you have a psychological burden. It suggests that something is an encumbrance that drags you down and hampers and impedes your progress in life. It is a hindrance that becomes a handicap and prevents you from accomplishing your goals and living a happy, carefree life. An albatross is a burden that you carry. What is your albatross? What is the main burden that you are carrying? What is the albatross around your neck? Is it a medical condition or an addiction? Is it a child or parent that is ill? Is it an unappreciative spouse? Is it a financial situation? Is it a boss or co-worker that undermines you? The albatross is a paradox because sailors often regard an albatross, which is a
sea bird, as good luck and a good omen. That is the paradox. This contradiction offers hope for all those who are burdened. Burdens are not meant to be carried forever. You can and you should try to free yourself from your albatross. Don’t expect the albatross to go away by itself. You have to be the one who sets yourself and the bird free. You have to turn things around in your own mind. You have to change the way you think about your situation. You have to accept the fact that it exists and decide that you will treat it differently from now on. View the albatross as a challenge that you can overcome. Be determined to eliminate the heavy load. Be creative. Think of ways to work around it so it will not be such a strain on you. You may not be able to get rid of it but you can accept it and not feel its weight if you change the way you handle it. Visualize the change you desire. Visualize yourself without the burden. Investigate the options that are available to you. Ask for help. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864

Taking center stage, Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman Edelcup noted, “As we celebrate our 15th anniversary, we are proud to note a remarkable renaissance thanks to visionary city leaders, residents and developers sharing the desire to transform Sunny Isles Beach into a wonderful community. Green space is also an integral part of Sunny Isles Beach. We’re so proud of all the new parks we have today – and now, more are coming soon to the south end of the city.” Mayor Edelcup encouraged “audience participation” in Sunny Isles Beach anniversary festivities and introduced John Richard, who explained the Arsht Center is celebrating its ongoing mission to “enlighten, educate and entertain the community through transformational arts and cultural experiences.” “Thanks to the united force of the public and private sectors investing in the arts, we’re elevating our status to ‘world class,’” Richard said. “The Arsht Center is dedicated to presenting the world’s best artists; being an entertainer for children and families; a catalyst for economic growth; and an exceptional resource for the arts in our community.” During the next act, Richard presented a preview of the Arsht Center’s exciting, culturally diverse 2012/2013 calendar highlighted by Broadway in Miami productions including the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis; Bette Midler’s Priscilla Queen of the Desert; Les Miserables; Rock of Ages; Mary Poppins; and STOMP. Roots series presented by TotalBank will start in November; and America’s most treasured classical artists will be featured throughout the Knight Masterworks Season, Ziff Classical Music Series, which opens in January. Leysa Pelyushko won tickets to the Arsht Center’s summer blockbuster The Donkey Show, an immersive theatrical experience that blends disco music hits, go-go dancers, roller skaters, feathered divas and a full active bar. Mayor Edelcup drew Adrienne Barker’s card as the winner of the City’s door prize — a huge basket brimming with Sunny Isles Beach goodies, including shirts, caps, books and more.
Before the last curtain call, Richard emphasized, “Your support of the Arsht Center is essential, and pays dividends ranging from economic boosts to our community - to enhanced quality of life for our residents, educational benefits for school children, and increased interest in investment from around the world.”

‘The Survey Says...’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY It seems like every day we hear about the results of new surveys and studies – but did you ever think about how they could impact life in the city? Go Godiva! Why has the Godiva store at Aventura Mall been so busy lately? Maybe due to the results of a new study in the Archives of Internal Medicine that found people who frequently eat antioxidant-rich chocolate have a lower body mass index than people who don’t. So if eating chocolate an average of twice a week while exercising regularly is the new “best way to stay thin” - let’s all Go Godiva! or just feel a little less guilty about grabbing a few Snickers bars and M&M bags at the checkout line. Have Lattes, Live Longer! Starbucks in Aventura welcome patrons of all ages - but following the release of new research in the New England Journal of Medicine suggesting coffee lovers live longer, we may start
seeing much older couples meeting for dates and “stimulating” conversation! Mr. Aventura Mom? According to the most recent Census, the number of stay-athome fathers in the U.S. has tripled in the past 10 years. So where are all the moms? Most likely at meetings of the new Aventura Chapter of the National Association of Professional Women – dedicated to enhancing women’s lives, promoting businesses and careers, and supporting a diverse range of charities and nonprofit organizations focused on women’s issues and child wellness. Bon Appetite! Stockholm researchers have found people who undergo gastric bypass surgery risk becoming alcoholics – so now you have a good excuse to keep on indulging in decadent cuisine at all the great restaurants around Aventura! Happy & Healthy! A new study finds loneliness could be a health risk – but not here in Aventura where socializing at familyfriendly venues like Founders Park and the Community Recreation Center is a favorite pastime - and proving social networking is at an all time high, the City of Aventura’s Facebook page now has over 661,844 “Likes!”

How Florida’s new P.I.P. Insurance Law will affect all drivers BY RUSSEL LAZEGA
Attorney and Author This year our legislature passed a comprehensive P.I.P. reform package designed to slash your car insurance rates. One problem: they never actually required insurers to reduce rates. Instead there’s only a suggestion that insurers rollback rates or send an “excuse” note to the Insurance Commissioner explaining why rates aren’t dropping. That’s it. As you can guess, car insurers are already whipping out their post-it pads and penning their justifications to the Commissioner for new rate hikes. So what did we consumers get from this reform designed to put money back in our pockets? In short, we got less coverage for likely more money. For example, P.I.P. insurers will now only offer $2,500 in benefits (down from $10,000) except for serious “emergency medical conditions.” Massage and acupuncture will no longer be available and there will be zero benefits unless you see a qualified physician within 14 days of the accident. For patients who do timely seek care, insurers will no longer cover injuries that were not
diagnosed in the initial exam or that were omitted in the ER/initial records. Your treating doctors and hospitals can also expect lower reimbursements based on new fee schedules (a 25% - 35% cut in most cases) and watch for slower payments based on provisions allowing the insurer 60 more days to investigate your claim for fraud. Finally, if you thought your P.I.P. claim was going to be quick and painless – think again. Your P.I.P. insurer may now force you to present yourself to their lawyers for an examination under oath (essentially a deposition) before deciding whether to pay your claim and make you file a lawsuit if you want documentation verifying why your claim isn’t being paid. Not to worry, the “note” explaining why they still can’t cut our rates is surely in the mail. Russel Lazega is an attorney and author of the most widely distributed legal textbook on Florida automobile insurance (P.I.P.) law, West’s Florida Practice Series Volume 7. Mr. Lazega represents over 400 medical providers, including 10 Florida hospitals, and is based in Dania Beach, Orlando and Tampa, Florida. Contact: Lazegalaw.com

U. Miami/Jackson’s Holtz ranks among top children’s hospitals BY LIDIA V. AMORETTI
Holtz Children’s Hospital at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Medical Center is among the nation’s top children’s hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings, published online on June 5. The rankings feature 50 hospitals in each of 10 pediatric specialties. Holtz was ranked in eight specialties this year: 26th in nephrology, 36th in diabetes and endocrinology, 38th in both gastroenterology and pulmonology, 39th in urology, 42nd in neonatology, 45th in cardiology and heart surgery, and 47th in orthopedics. Most notably, Holtz earned recognition in two previously unranked specialties — pulmonology and orthopedics — and improved its ranking in three others: gastroenterology, diabetes and endocrinology, and urology. In addition, U.S. News also ranked the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in ophthalmology and the UM Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Medical Center’s ear, nose and throat program, and its nephrology and urology programs, as part of their 2011-12 “Best Hospitals” rankings. These programs collaborate with Holtz in providing child health services. “To be recognized in eight specialties reflects the world-class excellence of the dedicated medical team at Holtz Children’s Hospital and the Miller School Department of Pediatrics,” said Pascal J. Goldschmidt, MD, senior vice president for Medical Affairs and dean of the UM Miller School of Medicine and CEO of the University of Miami Health System. “We congratulate everyone” he added. “Once again, Holtz Children’s Hospital is recognized for the unmatched medical expertise and compassionate care that its
medical team provides to pediatric patients every day,” said Carlos A. Migoya, president and CEO of Jackson Health System. “This honor is a testament to our continued commitment to excellence.” The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings pull together clinical and operational data from a lengthy survey completed by the hospitals. That survey asks hundreds of questions about survival rates, nurse staffing, subspecialist availability, and many more pieces of critical information. Data from the survey are combined with recommendations from pediatric specialists nationwide on the hospitals they consider best for children with challenging medical problems. For more than 50 years, UM physicians have served children in South Florida and those who come from all over the world. Judy Schaechter, MD, professor and acting chair of pediatrics, said rising in this national ranking “demonstrates that the pediatric care provided by our doctors and the entire staff at Holtz is truly outstanding and recognized by our peers. The tireless efforts of our team continue to make strides against disease and allow children to more quickly return to health and enjoy childhood as they should.” This year U.S. News surveyed 178 pediatric centers to obtain hard data such as availability of key resources and ability to prevent complications and infections. The hospital survey results made up 75 percent of the rankings. A separate reputational survey in which 1,500 pediatric specialists — 150 in each specialty — were asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty made up the remaining 25 percent. The ranking can be reviewed online at <www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals> and also will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 print edition on newsstands in August.

Fifty Years of the Space Needle
David Gedansky TRAVEL TIPS Fifty years ago, the Century 21 Exposition, also known as the Seattle World’s Fair, opened on April 21 in Seattle, Wash. Visitors were instantly drawn to the futuristic look of the Space Needle, a slender tower that soars over the city to a height of 605 feet. Since then, the Space Needle has become an iconic symbol of Seattle and the entire Pacific Northwest. It’s a top visitor attraction in the “Emerald City,” so named for its verdant parks and evergreen forests. An elevator will take you up the Space Needle to the Sky City Restaurant, where you can dine on regional cuisine and drink in a fabulous view of the Cascade Mountains to the east, Mount Rainier to the southeast, and the rugged Olympic Peninsula to the west. Just above the restaurant is an observation platform, which has welcomed the likes of Elvis Presley, Bono, Mike Myers and John Travolta. There’s more to see and do on the for-
mer grounds of the World’s Fair, now called the Seattle Center. The Pacific Science Center museum includes two IMAX theaters, a tropical butterfly house, a planetarium and hundreds of hands-on science exhibits. The EMP (formerly Experience Music Project) Museum, housed in an incredible building designed by Frank Gehry, showcases the history of music through rare memorabilia and multimedia displays. You can also catch a performance of the Seattle Shakespeare Company at the Center House Theater. While in Seattle, visit some of the city’s other famous sites. Go to the Pike Place Fish market to see the workers throwing huge fish through the air before they are wrapped up for customers. Then, explore the rest of the Public Market Center, the oldest continually operated public farmers’ market in the U.S. Seattle is also known as “Jet City” due to the presence of the Boeing Company, one of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturers. Boeing’s Future of Flight Aviation Center in the suburb of Everett offers tours of the massive assembly factory where Boeing’s 747, 767, 777 and the new 787 Dreamliner are built. Hyundai Accent has sleek design, new 40 mpg engine
Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS There’s a lot to like about the 2012 frontwheel-drive Hyundai Accent. It’s a lot sportier and looks more modern, thanks to sharing the new design theme found on stablemates Sonata and Elantra models. For 2012, the Accent body has been completely redesigned and given more flowing lines, with a new grille, hood, fenders, headlights, taillights, bumpers and air intakes. In essence, the new Accent looks like a smaller Elantra. It’s sleek in design and there’s very little chrome, with the body color prevailing from front to back — including the bumpers, mirrors and door handles — and black accents for emphasis; only the grille bar is chrome. There also are new 14- and 16-inch wheels. On the inside, the Accent interior has been redesigned and it’s much more modern, with brushed metal accents on the doors, steering wheel and center console. The instrument panel, center stack, vents,
switches and controls have been redesigned. The instrumentation is white-onblack with red needles and the blue-glow nightlight is a nice touch. A three-spoke multi-function steering wheel has a thick rim and holds switches for the sound system on the left, cruise control system on the right, and telephone on the lower left. Sporty bucket seats have comfortable cushions and bolsters, and they are very supportive. The interior also has more room and more storage spaces. There’s 21.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the folding second-row bench seat; 47.5 cubic feet with the seat folded flat. Door and console storage is spacious and there’s even a nifty sliding console armrest. Under the hood, the new Accent has a peppy new twin-cam, 16-valve, 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that utilizes direct fuel injection — a first in the subcompact class — and variable valve timing to give it lowrpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The engine — 40 pounds lighter than the previous engine — generates 138 hp and 123 pounds-feet of torque. As for the gearbox, there’s a choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. On manual-transmission models, an EcoShift indicator

between the instrument pods tells you the proper gear for various driving conditions. The automatic gearbox has the Shiftronic manual-shift mode. The EPA rates the new Accent at a not-too-shabby 30/40 mpg with either transmission. The 2012 Hyundai Accent is available in two body styles — five-door hatchback and four-door sedan — and offered in three trim
levels — GLS Sedan, GS Hatchback and SE five-door. Base pricing ranges from $12,445 to $16,795. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277, ext. 261, or by addressing email correspondence to <LetsTalkCars@aol.com>.

Where sugar hides BY BARI AUERBACH
When it comes to losing weight, it can be infuriating when you’re fooled by a food that sounds diet friendly but is actually loaded with sugar, calories and fat! According to a recent Herald article entitled “Suicide by sugar? Sweet tooth is killing us, doctors say,” experts agree “Just one dietary change – eliminating added sugars – could reverse America’s deadliest and costliest ills, including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and many cancers.” Considering sugar consumption has tripled over the past 50 years and scientists from the University of California-San Francisco blame sugar for the world’s obesity epidemic as well as 35 million deaths each years, you may want to hang these “Where sugar hides” revelations on your fridge and cupboard doors: Energy Bars: Some bars marketed as high protein bars actually have very low amounts of protein and high amounts of carbohydrates in the form of sugar. For example, a Promax Cookies n’ Cream energy bar has as much as 30 grams of sugar. There are many energy bars with low sugar content – so just be sure to check the nutrition labels carefully or you may just as well have a candy bar!
Jello: Just one small cup of strawberry Jello has 17g sugar and Jello instant vanilla pudding has 19g sugar. The good news is sugar-free strawberry jello and sugarfree/fat free vanilla instant pudding are both available with 0g sugar. Rice Cakes: Deceptively healthy Quaker Rice Snacks in the Caramel Corn flavor have 9g sugar per serving while the Sour Cream & Onion flavor has only 1g sugar. Jam: Before you choose a jam that’s jam packed with sugar, check the label to see Smucker’s Strawberry Jam has 12g sugar while Smucker’s Sugar Free Strawberry Jam has 0g sugar (and it’s seedless!)
Cereals & Granola: Beware of “healthy looking cereals” such as Kellogg’s Raisin Bran or Smart Start with 17g sugar; Quaker flavored oatmeal with 9g sugar; and Nature Valley Granola Bars with 12g sugar. Smarter choices include Quaker original flavored oatmeal with 0g sugar; Publix Bran Flakes with 5g sugar; and Multigrain Cheerios with 6g sugar.
Fruit Smoothies: One 24-ounce smoothie provides about 450 calories - that’s the same amount of calories in 10-12 sugary doughnut holes! A solution is to make less caloric homemade versions using 1-2 servings fruit, 1/2 cup skim milk, and 1/2 nonfat flavored yogurt.
Yogurt: Take the “Activia challenge” and see if you can choose the yogurt with the least grams of sugar. Activa Dessert Vanilla Bean in a four oz. size has a whopping 19g of sugar; Activia Light Fat Free Vanilla has 7g sugar…And the winner is: Dannon Light & Fit Vanilla with just 1g sugar per 6 oz. serving.
Coffee and Tea: Be careful which bottle of tea you pick up – even if you’re at Whole Foods Market. “Honest Tea” has a Perfect White Tea flavor with 9g of sugar while the Just Green Tea unsweetened variety has 0g sugar. And at Starbucks, all those grande “skinny” Vanilla Lattes with 28 g. sugar/30 g. carbs could be why you’re not losing those last 10 pounds.

CSF brings classical music back Locally made film on school to Southwest Florida’s airwaves violence released on DVD BY JASON HUGHES
Classical South Florida (CSF), a nonprofit listener-supported public radio organization dedicated to broadcasting classical music, has begun airing its programming in Fort Myers and throughout Southwest Florida on WNPS 88.7FM. CSF acquired the local frequency earlier this year. “We’re delighted to bring a full-time classical music service back to Southwest Florida’s airwaves,” said CSF program director, Jason Hughes. “Classical South Florida’s programming can now be heard by more than 5.7 million people throughout all of South Florida — from the upper Keys to the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast,
and from Fort Myers to Naples and Marco Island. We’re proud of our continued growth, and we look forward to bringing our new listeners the very best in classical music programming for many years to come.” The CSF program schedule will include broadcasts of nationally renowned programs such as Performance Today, SymphonyCast and live performances from The Metropolitan Opera, as well as Florida favorites such as Backstage with the New World Symphony. Classical South Florida can be found on WKCP 89.7FM in Miami. More information on programming and the CSF organization is available online at <www.ClassicalSouthFlorida.org>.

Hidden Rage — a locally made independent film that takes on the issues of bullying, school violence and teen suicide by dramatically depicting the warning signs that parents, school officials and fellow students often ignore — will soon be available to a national audience. The DVD version of the movie, its story seems ripped from television news reports, will be out on July 17 in stores and online sellers as diverse as Walmart, Amazon.com, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Netflix, Christianbook.com, Kmart.com and others. Director/producer Norton O. Community remembers victims of 1994 AMIA Bombing at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center On the morning of July 18, 1994, a car bomb destroyed the AMIA Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires, leaving 85 dead and 300 wounded. The deadliest terrorist attack ever in Argentina’s history came just two years after the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires. In observance of this horrific event, AJC Latino and Latin American Institute along with Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center (ATJC) and over 30 local Jewish organizations will host a community-wide memorial ceremony on the 18th anniversary of the bombing, Wednesday, July 18, 2012, 7 p.m. at ATJC: 20400 NE 30th Avenue, Aventura, FL. The Hon. Chaim Shacham, Consul General of Israel and the Hon. Miguel Talento, Consul General of Argentina will address the audience. This year’s featured speaker, Ana Weinstein, witnessed the attack and will share her story of survival at the memorial. The program will also include a candle-lighting ceremony in which organization representatives will light
remembrance candles. In 2006, an official Argentine government report prepared by Special Prosecutor Alberto Nisman identified Iranian and Hezbollah figures as responsible for the attack. INTERPOL issued red notices for the capture of six suspects, including Ahmed Vahidi, now Iran’s Defense Minister. “The lack of justice after 18 years, where no single person sits in jail, should alert us about the dangerous partnership between the terrorists who planned and executed the attack with the Iranian support and the local connection in Argentina which facilitated it,” said Juan M. Dircie, Associate DirectorMiami of AJC Latino and Latin American Institute. “Peace loving people must unite in condemning this lethal alliance.” AMIA is an AJC international partner. Since the 1994 terrorist attack, AJC has worked very closely with the Argentine Jewish community to bring forth justice. For more information, call ATJC at 305937-1880 or visit ATJC.org or AJC.Org.

munity profile, serving as a savvy representative of JCS who put her heart and soul into her duties,” said President and CEO Fred Stock. Stock also discussed initiatives undertaken for the new fiscal year, stating “JCS is aggressively increasing its outreach efforts, partnering with local agencies to bring our expertise directly to the community outside of the usual office environment. Two named storms had already generated prior to the official start of hurricane season on June 1. and now is the time for your preparation. These suggestions can be incorporated into a “to do” list to help your family prepare. 1. Download a copy of Miami-Dade County’s Hurricane Guide for tips on creating your hurricane kit. You know best what your basic needs are. Get a waterproof container to store your items and put it in a safe place. 2. Start saving newspapers and clean plastic bottles. When the storm warnings come, the bottles should be filled with tap water. Newspapers can be rolled up, secured with a rubber band, and placed by windows and door to absorb any water that leaks in. 3. Use a camera or cell phone to take pictures throughout the interior and exterior of your residence to document the condition of your home prior to the storm. Secure copies of the pictures in case it is needed for insurance and/or FEMA claims. 4. Have a file with all your important documents. Now is the time to locate your insurance policies, passport, bank information, car paperwork, important personal papers, cash for a few days, and the pictures you took. Place them in a large zip lock bag or watertight container. 5. Check your medications. If there is a storm warning, make sure you have enough to get you through the storm and a few days afterward. If not, call your doctor for a full or partial refill. 6. Check the landscaping around your residence. Get your trees trimmed back and debris hauled away. Each week look for five new tips to help you create a personal hurricane plan. Should you have questions regarding these tips or any other issue in District 4, call our district office at 305-787-5999 or e-mail us at District4@miamidade.gov.

AMC members were fascinated to learn from guest speaker, noted attorney Russ Lazega, about the changes that will happen to their car insurance this year as he explained Florida’s new “No-Fault Insurance” law. Lazega is eminently qualified to speak on the subject, since he wrote the main legal textbook on Florida’s auto insurance law, with 5,000 copies in print.
