Poisonous Personality Disorders
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Everyone has their own personality. Some are pleasant and some are poisonous. Some personalities become the bane of your existence. Each one of these personality types; Paranoid, Anti-Social, Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic, CompulsivePerfectionistic, and Passive-Aggressive are difficult, toxic and deadly. You may have to live or work with one or more of these malicious, noxious and obnoxious personalities during your lifetime. Avoiding them and eliminating them from your life are the most obvious and simplest solutions but that is not always possible. In order to deal with them you need to have some basic knowledge and understanding of their disorder and their modus operandi. You will also need some strategies to deal with their inappropriate behavior. Some techniques work better than others depending on the personality disorders involved.
Define the particular disorder you are dealing with. Some people may have a combination of traits. Try to find something that you can respect about the individual. Work at accepting the person while not accepting their toxic behavior. These are often difficult to do but they are a starting point. For certain situations, you might try a technique called “Fogging” by saying something like, “That’s interesting” while inwardly you disagree. You could also try the “Broken Record” technique by repeating what you want over and over. Try to get a sense of what sets the person off and avoid those behaviors. Set clear boundaries and limitations. Let the person know that you will not tolerate their antics. Describe the behavior that is upsetting you. Express the feelings it arouses in you. It is important to use “I” statements. For example, “When you do (such and such) “I feel.” Then state the need or want you have; “I would appreciate it if you do not do that in the future.” Be aware that you may not get what you want. They may be incapable of change or respecting your feelings which is part of what is so frustrating, upsetting and maddening about them. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Moody’s upgrades Mount Sinai Medical Center’s bond rating Moody’s Investors Service has upgraded its investment grade to Baa2 from Baa3 for long-term ratings assigned to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. The rating outlook is stable at the higher rating level, showing a multi-year trend of improved financial performance, and continues to reinforce the medical center’s strong image as a healthcare leader. The upgrade follows a fundamentally improved operating profile with measurable volume capture in cardiac services, such as a two percent increase in openheart procedures and a 6.5 percent increase in cardiac catheterizations. The Mount Sinai Heart Institute, a partnership with New York’s prestigious Columbia University, continues to be a statewide leader in cardiovascular services providing patients the best heart attack survival rate in Florida, as well as the most active valve program. Furthermore, Mount Sinai’s diversified portfolio of services is evident in satellite offices located in Aventura, Hialeah, Coral Gables and Key Biscayne with increased outpatient presence in those markets. Despite the challenging healthcare and economic environment, Mount Sinai has
increased its operating cash flow to over $50 million, generating three consecutive years of positive operating income and controlled expenses. The medical center has 137 days cash on hand due to revenue management and stronger operating performances. The outlook rating reflects Moody’s expectation that continued revenue and expense initiatives will result in solid maintenance of current operating margins and further strengthening of Mount Sinai’s operating performance.

Where is Revolutionary War Hero Thomas Paine buried?
Bob Diamond
HISTORICALLY YOURS New Rochelle N.Y. has offered a reward for the remains of Thomas Paine for re-burial. A corset-maker by trade in England, Paine immigrated to the American colonies in 1774 in time to play a major role in the American Revolution. With little journalistic experience, Paine wrote a powerful, widely read pamphlet “Common Sense,” which advocated colonial America’s independence from England. When Americans suffered losses, Paine wrote a series of “Crises Papers” that helped stir America on to victory. New York awarded Paine a home in New Rochelle. The British statesman Edmund Burke wrote a book against the French Revolution, alleging monarchy as the finest system of government. Paine returned to England, took on Burke, defended the French Revolution and published “The Rights of Man,” the most important book on civil rights in the 18th century, dedicating the book to George Washington. He challenged the King’s authority, alleging the right of self determination.
With a warrant for his arrest, Paine fled to France, where he accepted membership in the French General Assembly. The French Revolution took a terrible turn - the guillotine for royalty. Paine, remembering the support King Louis XVI gave America in our Revolution, begged to save his life. Wrong timing! The French Assembly sentenced Paine to the guillotine. Paine wrote to Washington to save his life. Washington chose not to interfere. Facing death, Paine wrote a book “The Age of Reason” in which he advocated deism, promoted reason and argued against all institutionalized religions, particularly Christian doctrine. American Ambassador, James Monroe, interceded and saved Paine’s life. Paine returned to America, publishing a letter critical of Washington. America turned against Paine, the media accusing him of being an atheist and a drunk. Paine died in 1809 in New York, a broken man. No American cemetery would accept Paine for burial. A friend buried Paine by the side of the road in New Rochelle. A misguided man, believing he could make money with Paine’s body, dug it up and shipped it to England, where it disappeared. Paine is being rediscovered, as he believed in freedom, equality and dignity for all people.

The Favors of Costa Rica
Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer
EAT THIS... DRINK THAT It’s Memorial Day Weekend and I am writing this column from my brother’s house in Costa Rica, where I have been staying for the past four days. I flew in on Thursday and will be returning home the following Monday. And while I am in town, what will I be doing? Chilling out, relaxing, and catching up with my family – which will all done over plenty of eating and drinking everything that Costa Rica (CR) has to offer. What I love is that my brother is a food person like me. He loves to cook – and eat – so no matter what, it’s going to be good. He uses mostly local ingredients and uses them in tried and true recipes. In CR, they prefer to grow and raise most of their own so the expense of having to fly it in and ship it in is eliminated when possible. And since the climate is tropical –much like that of Florida – lots of beautiful vegetables and fruits grow well and are readily available, as are meats, chicken, and fish. Getting more specific, beef is plentiful – but different from what we are used to in the states. A rib-eye, for instance, as we know it, is thick and fatty. Here, cuts are thinner, still fatty, still tasty, but different. Ninety percent of the eggs are brown, and while Americans keep them refrigerated, in CR, that is simply not done. They remain at room temp almost all the time. Sunday morning, I went to my brother’s local farmer’s market, Santa Ana Farmers Market, (anyone who reads my column regularly knows that I am a huge fan of green markets) and loved it. It was just a few short blocks, but there was plenty packed in – fruit and veggies galore including both familiar and less familiar including muchas lechugas (s lots of lettuces such as red leaf, green leaf, romaine, iceberg, and frisee), tomates (tomatoes), onions, garlic, stunning bunches of radishes, some corm on the cob, fresas, sandia, y piñas (strawberries, watermelon, and
pineapples), and more indigenous produce including guanabana, fresh hearts of palm, and the like. It got even better when we found the prepared foods – my nephew opted for a manhole-sized fresh arepa. I chose one stuffed con frijoles negros. And it was delicious. We washed it street food is the greatest thing on earth. We would up buying some of everything for dinner – which was skirt steak, rib-eyes, zucchini on the grill, assorted mushrooms, stewed down in butter, and salad. Everything was so fresh and crisp – what a pleasure to eat! We also made seven avocados worth of guacamole, which we served with yucca and corn chips from the market. Spectacular. I can’t explain the happiness and satisfaction I get, talking with street vendors who cannot understand a word I say, but ultimately, the smiles on both of our faces as we agree upon a price and I walk away with their “wares” says it all. I tried tuna cebiche here, which is spelled with a “b” not a “v” as we are used to. It’s served more like tartare – with avocado and in cubes. I ate Plancha de mariscos, which is a personal griddle pan filled with pulpo (Octopus), fish, calamari, shrimp, clams, mussels, and more. Still aflame as it reached the table, the result was sheer perfection. Garlicky, lemony, well-cooked and spiced, this dish was simply outstanding. Sharing a similar dish with my brother the next evening, we added steak and chicken to the mixed grill. Excellence. I ate so much during this trip, it was almost scary. Everything seemed to taste different, sometimes better, other times, not as much. Orange juice that comes in a small, cardboard box was the best I’d ever had (seriously); heavy cream from pouches tasted equally great. With that said, let’s say that we have plenty of great food close by, however, when out of town – check out everything the locals eat. It is the best way to truly experience the country, the culture, and the food. Yum. Bob Lilienfeld of Melnick, Lilienfeld & Castonguay CPAs helps clients focus on “lifetime tax planning” by providing insightful strategies enabling individuals and business owners to derive year-round benefits from these exceedingly brilliant deductions:
AGELESS, TIMELESS TIPS Providing forward- thinking strategies for giving back, Lilienfeld suggests, “Donate appreciated securities to fund large charitable contributions; and consider using a charitable remainder trust. The trust can sell any appreciated stock you own at no tax cost, pay a lifetime annuity, and you can also receive a charitable deduction. We also recommend giving your family gifts now since the limit is $13,000 annually. It’s especially beneficial to pay beneficiaries medical and education costs directly because these payments are in addition to the $13,000 gift limit.”
MODERN FAMILY “By establishing 529 College Savings Plans, families can gain tax-free earnings if the funds are used to pay for higher qualified education expenses.” Lilienfeld explains, “We can also help set up Family Limited Partnerships to accomplish gifting and reduce potential estates taxes.” BUSINESS SUCCESS Lilienfeld suggests keeping an expense diary. “You would be shocked at how many business deductions you find simply by keeping track of them. It’s also a good idea to calculate whether itemizing deductions once every two years makes economic sense – particularly if you have no mortgage interest expense.”

summer events
BY COMMISSIONER SALLY HEYMAN
With the 2012 Hurricane Season beginning on June 1st and running through November 30th, the office of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally A. Heyman, District 4, wants to help get you ready. It is important that you develop your own personal disaster plan on how you will protect your household and property. Most of these things can be done well in advance of storm warnings. • Check your insurance coverage and be sure it includes replacement coverage, flood and wind protection. • Establish an out-of-state or out-of-Miami-Dade County area phone number to relay messages to friends and family. • Familiarize yourself with your evacuation zone and nearest Red Cross Evacuation Center (shelter of last resort). • Make a plan for the care of your pets during an emergency. Call 3-1-1 to get information on Miami-Dade County’s PetFriendly Hurricane Shelters. • Start buying extra shelf food and storing clean/empty plastic bottles (to fill later for water). Each week look for tips to help you create a personal hurricane plan.
For information or if you have questions regarding these tips or any other issue in District 4, call 305-787-5999 or send email to District4@miamidade.gov.

‘Eat Clean to be Lean’
BY BARI AUERBACH If you’re trying to attain your ideal beach body, it may feel like you’re stuck in quicksand if you don’t truly know how to “eat clean to be lean.” Even some of the most dedicated fitness fanatics can often be sabotaged by foods that fool ‘ya into thinking they’re diet friendly – when they may actually be the culprits preventing you from winning the battle of the bulge. Think Before You Drink: New York’s Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to ban the sale of sugary beverages larger than 16 ounces could really help reverse the “supersizing of America.” Even though you may think your drink is safe – beware! Some bottles of Vitamin Water have as much as 8 grams of sugar; one 24-oz. fruit smoothie can have about 450 calories (the same amount in 10-12 doughnut holes); and at Starbucks, all those grande “skinny” Vanilla Lattes with 28 g. sugar/30 g. carbs could be why you’re not losing those last 10 pounds! Snacks that Pack on Pounds: Here’s some important “imposter” information to know about some snacks that only appear to be healthy…Did you know just a handful of yogurt raisins has about as much saturated fat as two BK burgers? And if you have two cups of granola – that’s a whopping 660 calories and 51 grams of sugar (12 teaspoons). Energy bars can also prove to be the demise of your diet. Some marketed as high protein bars actually have very low amounts of protein and high amounts of carbohydrates in the form of sugar. For example, one leading brand has only 10 grams of protein and as much as 18 grams of sugar. The Medical Science Monitor has published a study showing a rise in insulin
levels associated with eating bars that have a high carbohydrate content make it more difficult to lose body fat. Uh Oh…I Didn’t Know! Some of the many foods often thought to be diet friendly when they can really be a dieter’s worst enemy include: Flavored oatmeal– choose the plain flavor to eliminate all the sugar and benefit from the soluble fiber that can prevent abdominal fat buildup, reduce total body fat and waist circumference. And instead of adding a banana, opt for berries instead. Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries are loaded with antioxidants and fiber. For every gram of fiber consumed, approximately seven calories can be eliminated, according to research conducted at Germany’s University of Kiel, Department of Human Nutrition and Food Science. Fruit Flavored Yogurt – choose Greek or light yogurts to remove all the “cons” associated with added sugars and appreciate all the “pros” of probiotics—similar to good bacteria found naturally in the intestine that can help prevent colds and improve immune response when you’re sick. Anything White – To truly diet right, eliminate everything white like white rice, white bread and white potatoes. Optimal lower glycemic choices include brown rice, quinoa, sweet potatoes and Ezekiel bread available in a variety of flavors at Whole Foods Market. Clean Sweep Success: Once you’ve cleaned up your diet act by getting rid of hidden sugars, fat and calories, you’ll love being able to wear your favorite swimsuit this summer and reveal you really know how to eat clean to be lean!

‘This Book is Close to my Heart’ — Leonard Pitts BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
Newspaper columnist Leonard Pitts, who won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2004, has changed gears with his latest book, Freeman, which takes place a few weeks after the end of the Civil War, “Freeman has probably been in my head for years,” Pitts says, “ever since I read about former slaves and their history, and trying to reunite their family.” The book’s protagonist is on a quest to find his wife, whom he hasn’t seen in 15 years. “It’s a testimony to the power of love and family,” Pitts says. This book is close to Pitts’ his heart. He is a fan of historical fiction and has always wanted to write a historical novel. Freeman touches on an aspect of history that is little known. “A lot of people don’t know what it was like after the civil war.” Pitts says. “It was a mess; it was not just a civil war and 600,000 men dead; right after that, you have the president assassinated, two great traumas right on top of each other. It’s remarkable that the country survived.” In Freeman, protagonist Sam Freeman has been away for 15 years after escaping from his owner. There was an ill-advised escape attempt that left his son dead. Freeman’s wife, Tilda, blames Sam for their son’s death. “That was their only child and it is 15 years later when he returns to look for his Tilda,” Pitts says. “She has been sold, but he doesn’t know it. The original owner was relatively humane and enlightened; she allowed her slaves to learn to read and didn’t believe in separating families. That was why the wife didn’t want to run. But the humane slave owner had financial trouble and had to sell her property, including the slaves.” Tilda is sold to a brutally cruel man who is slightly crazed from the loss of his son in the war. While Sam is traveling to the south from Philadelphia, the slave owner is forcing Tilda at gunpoint to walk westward from Mississippi in hopes of finding territory where his rights as a slaveholder will be upheld. “Sam and his wife didn’t get a chance to see each other to grieve, Pitts says. “There is this pain and he needs her forgiveness or for her to slap his face. That added an extra level of emotional complexity. He’s going back not just because he loves her, but because of the emotional pain.” Pitts says he is fascinated with the idea

of what people will do for love and family. This is Pitts’ third published novel and this time he is working a book tour that will take him to Virginia, North Carolina and four cities in Florida, including a signing date at Books and Books in Coral Gables on June 9 at 7 p.m. “There’s nothing like being in a book store,” Pitts says. “When you write a book, you’re saying something like, ‘Boy, they’re going to love this!’ But you don’t get feedback until three years later after it is published. I’m looking forward to listening to what people have to say.” Pitts says that when he writes a column, he gets feedback almost immediately; some good, some bad. Still, even though it takes years for a book to go from concept to publication, Pitts says he would rather write fiction full time. “But I have been in the middle of things for so long,” says Pitts. “I am sure that if I gave up writing a column there would be times when I would miss being able to insert my opinions into the public discourse.” For more information, call 305-4424408 or go to <www.booksandbooks.com>.
