Enjoy the train ride of your life

Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Life is a journey. It is like a train ride. You get on at birth and it takes you to your final destination. There are different places and stops along the way. You can get on and off any time you wish. You can decide that this train will not take you where you want to go. So, you can get off and get on another train that will take you in a different direction. You can change trains many times. You can also take an express train between certain stations to get you someplace faster. Try not to take the express train for your entire journey because it may get you to the end too quickly before you have had the chance to experience everything. On the train, you can change your seat and your seatmates. Different people will

get on and off at each stop. Some of them will ride with you for the entire journey. If you like them and you are lucky, you will enjoy their company till you reach your final destination. Sadly, you may like them and want them to travel with you to the end but for some unknown reason they will have to get off before you reach the end of the line together. Be sure to enjoy the scenery. Look out the windows and take it all in. Paint a mental memory of the beauty you see. Look at your fellow travelers. Notice them. Acknowledge them. Smile at them. Maybe, talk to them. Share with them even if it is only your newspaper or some food you have. Help them if they need help. The most important thing about the train ride of your life is to be aware that you have choices. You are in control. You can choose which stops you will make and when you will get on and off. You can choose who you sit next to and who you share the journey with. Patricia is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212308-0309.

Justice Frankfurter and Gobitas case

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS

The flag-salute controversy actually began in Germany in 1933 when thousands of Jehovah’s Witnesses were imprisoned in concentration camps for refusal on religious beliefs to salute the Nazi flag in schools and public events. In response, the leader of the American Witnesses, Joseph Rutherford, “denounced all compulsory flag-salute laws.” In 1935, two young Witnesses children, Lillian and William Gobitas, were expelled from public school in Minersville, Pa., for their refusal to salute the American flag. The law suit challenging the school board came before Federal Judge Albert Maris in Philadelphia. The school board’s attorney argued that the board had exercised its police power to induce patriotism to protect the children’s “health, safety, welfare and morals.” Judge Maris upheld the children, holding that their religious beliefs “cannot even remotely prejudice or imperil the safety, health, morals, property or personal rights of their fellows.” A federal appellate court upheld Maris.

In arguing for the children before the Supreme Court in 1940, their attorney stressed the “primacy of the First Amendment (freedom of religion) over the police powers of the local governments.” In writing the Supreme Court’s majority opinion (8-1), Justice Frankfurter, using judicial restraint, upheld the school board, rejecting the claim that First Amendment rights deserved special protection against abridgement by legislative bodies. Religious belief, he wrote, “does not relieve citizens from the discharge of political responsibilities.” (Wow!) In essence, Frankfurter stated that the Witnesses could find classrooms for their children in their own schools. The children never returned to the public school. In a superb, lone dissent, Justice Harlan Fiske Stone stated that the expulsion of the children was “no less than the surrender of the constitutional protection of the liberty of small minorities to the popular will.” Frankfurter’s opinion set off a massive wave of persecution and violent attacks on Witnesses across the country. In Nebraska, a Witness was kidnapped, beaten and castrated by vigilantes. These terrorist acts were traced directly to the decision in the Gobitas case. “Shocked by the explosive reaction to its ruling, the Supreme Court overturned its prior decision in the Gobitas case three years later.”

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE L C : W h a t i s y o u r specialty within the field of dentistr y? F K : I do a lot of prosthodontics – often relatively complex cases that are redos from somebody else. We do oral surgery; we treat periodontal disease non-surgically if you are a candidate for non surgical treatment. It’s a pretty high-tech office, so we have a lot of interesting equipment. And of course we also do routine stuff. This is not a high-volume office; I learned that if I get to know my patients, I am working for them not just for the dollar. There’s a personal connection. For me, that’s the drive, the fun – to get to know someone I’m taking care of. I also have an expertise in ceramics, which is a very demanding field. I give a lot of lectures on that.

F K : After I got out of the Army I decided to go back to New York to practice with my Dad. Then we had a late March snowstorm, and I was driving on one of the expressways in a Firebird when my car started to spin out. When I got home, I called my Dad and sister in Miami Beach and told them I was coming down for Passover. I never went back. For one thing, as a single professional I was being taxed out of New York. I had friends who were living like kings in Florida on much lower incomes. I had been stationed in Augusta, GA, in the Army, and while I was there I’d got licensed in Florida. So I ended up in North Miami Beach, and I’ve been practicing here since 1976. Dr. Knoll’s office is located at 951 NE 167th Street, Suite 208 in North Miami Beach. It’s a conversation you should have BY SUSAN BRALEY

Are you a caregiver? Do you have a parent or senior relative that you provide help to? Are you one of the ones who has “sandwich duty” with young children pulling you in one direction and elderly parents pulling you in the other… and a career as well? Have you ever been cross, angry or inpatient with Mom? You may be facing the “CAREGIVING CONUNDRUM”. Over 25 million Americans are caring for elders - spending weekends on the road, stopping by to take care of chores, taking days off from work to take Mom to a doctor’s appointment, etc. Many of you know caregivers. Families who are attempting to support older relatives still in their own homes who are becoming less and less able to manage, face additional stress. Are they eating properly? Taking their medications on time? Becoming forgetful about their safety? Still driving? Wandering? You know that a nursing home is not the answer. They aren’t sick; they just need a little more help with their daily routine. You know that their quality of life isn’t the best, (many days they are alone). You also know that that Mom or Dad, Aunt or Uncle is not going to easily give up their independence or the home they worked so hard for. Would an assisted living choice be an appropriate

solution? Where do you start? It makes sense to look at all options. Is Mom willing to move closer to you or does she need to stay in her own area? Most seniors want stay in their community- swapping doctors or moving away from friends can be too overwhelming. If this is the case, then look at what’s available in her area. Retirement communities come in all shapes and sizes. Some are independent living only, some offer different levels of care- including assisted and memory care options. Some are privately owned, nonprofit, or run by large corporations. Some are rental; some are purchase(called a life or continuing care community). Whatever style or whatever type you choose -try for a permanent solution. You don’t want to have to move Mom again if she requires more care in the future. Weigh your options and make the move. Your visits will then become actual visits- not chores. What a difference when you can actually stop by on your way home from the ball game and talk and visit with Mom. How convenient, that she is now in the neighborhood. Take the steps now to take care of Mom. And, who know’s? You just might feel better yourself.

Susan Braley has worked in Senior Living for over seven years and is currently the Marketing Director at the Imperial Club Retirement Community in Aventura. She can be reached at 305-935-1801.

Young leaders from around the world gather Celebrate your child’s birthday in Aventura to confront anti-Semitism Jungle Island style

Fifteen youth leaders from Argentina, Israel and the United States gathered in Aventura in early August to participate in a special training conducted by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called “Confronting Anti-Semitism.” These young Jewish leaders are part of the Kulanu Tri Center Project’s Jewish leadership and educational program sponsored by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, MichaelAnn Russell JCC, the Hacoaj Community Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Matnas (community center) in Yerucham, Israel, the Nadav Foundation and World Confederation of Jewish Community Centers. The Anti-Defamation League’s “Confronting Anti-Semitism” program empowers the Jewish community to constructively and effectively respond to anti-Semitic and anti-Israel incidents and to challenge the persistent anti-Semitic stereotypes that are at the root of these incidents. This year’s program was sponsored by Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. The lessons imparted during the training by Yael Hershfield, ADL FL Associate Director, provided the Jewish teens with the resources to knowledgably and peacefully respond to anti-Semitism and anti-Israel rhetoric in their respective countries. Through interactive activities, the young leaders explored how hate progresses from thought to action. “I’ve conducted ADL’s ‘Confronting AntiSemitism’ programs throughout Florida over the last few years, but training this group was a very meaningful experience as a result of the teens’ abilities to not only take away lifelong lessons in confronting anti-Semitism, but in

their mature capacity to bond and connect with each other, despite their own cultural differences,” stated Yael Hershfield, ADL FL Associate Director. The young leaders discussed the ways in which stereotypes and prejudices manifest themselves in America, Argentina and Israel and were provided with specific strategies for confronting such challenges. The Jewish teens from Argentina and the United States shared common experiences of anti-Israel rhetoric crossing the line into anti-Semitic expressions. The Israeli teens were surprised to learn about the way in which Israel is often represented around the world and how some Jewish communities are being targeted. The program in Aventura was the second of three meetings for this group. Their first meeting was held in Buenos Aires and the third and final meeting will be held in Yerucham, Israel.

The Chinese of my youth.....

Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer

EAT THIS... DRINK THAT Growing up in New York, Sunday night meant Chinese food for dinner. For 15 years, my mom would break out a menu from the same little restaurant, we’d each pick a dish (there were four people in my family), assorted soups, eggrolls all around, and those quintessential ribs…the ribs you (at least, I) really do not find here. They were just “spare ribs” – red, meaty, sticky, and well, just delicious. Fifteen minutes later we’d drive to “Hau Po”, our local restaurant (and I use the term loosely as there were 4 tables, no décor and more counter space then square footage), and munch on complimentary shrimp chips housed in a large foil baking pan while waiting for our food. We’d get it home (inevitably one container would open in the car and spill). It was always piping hot and consistently good. Here is a bit different. I have lived all over South Florida and can’t find that one to-die-for joint. In Aventura, with its residents, there should be at least half dozen places like that, but to my dismay, I haven’t found it. Not to that degree. Here, there are Thai and Sushi mixes (with some Chinese thrown in), Chinese and Sushi, Chinese and Latin (enough said). Now don’t get me wrong – there are places I go, and enjoy, and find items I consider amazing in various places, but here better Chinese is found more a “dining” experience (I qualify that with eat-in, gourmet food and ambiance). Here are my picks for both best “gourmet” as well as “take out, down and dirty Chinese eats. Go Out and Dine: Christine Lee’s: Closest to home, this landmark eatery, opened by its namesake and now run by daughter Mary, moved to Gulfstream prior to the Villages opening. Before that, it lived for years in a shopping center on A1A in Sunny Isles. I can remember eating there with my friend Stacy Koppelman and her family in 1987, before I ever lived here. I remember big shrimp, great Egg Foo Young, the tastiest Beef and Broccoli, and the like. So many classic Szechwan dishes. All that I remember Chinese food should be. They now serve sushi, specialty salads and more Americanized cuisine (as an upscale dining establishment) but the food remains impeccable. (901 South Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, FL 33309; 954.457.6255); Skilled chef Philippe Chow (of Mr. Chow fame) offers exquisite cuisine, but it does come with a price tag.

Philippe opened this past June in Gansevoort South to rave reviews. What I like the most is that the food (all of it) is delicious. The space is sexy and smart while adhering to traditional Asian minimalist style and colors, the staff gracious, and most of all, it is pure Chinese cuisine. So, if you want to make a night of it, so what if Wonton soup is $10, two spring rolls run $29 (okay, so they are lobster, subtract $7 for shrimp), and chicken and broccoli (which does serve 2) is $44 – it’s worth the experience! (2305 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, FL 33139; 305.674.0250); and then there is Hakkasan: impeccable and newly beloved. Based in the Fontainebleau Hotel , the eatery offers everything a diner could want. Restaurateur Alan Yau is first class all the way. The space is sleek, the cuisine traditional, but with a high-end twist, meaning the ingredients are a foodies dream ( i.e. Wagyu beef replaces “beef”). 4441 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, 786.261.1388). For Down and dirty Chinese If you are looking to have a “regular, filling, and somewhat non-health-conscious” (although most are based in North Miami Beach and Hallandale Beach -not Aventura), check out: The 163rd -167th Street spread is a plethora of Asian options. From grocery stores like Chung Hing New China Lake (165th Street North, NMB, 305.944.1308) and Sang’s an establishment on NE 163rd in NMB, 305.947.7076) are two worth giving a shot. At Sang’s, authentic food is best tried with staff recommendations. Americanized Chinese food is just that. You can eat in, but take out is better. For the best Mixed Wonton/Eggdrop soup and Egg Foo Young check out Wonton Garden (709 W. Hallandale Beach, 33009; 954.454.7259). Consistent in taste and consistency, this place is an ideal take-out stop. Lychee Garden (Hallandale Beach, 954.457.5900) can’t be beat for quantity. A Dinner Special offers more than a pint of fried rice, an egg role, soup for a nominal charge, and of course, the main entrée – all for less than $10. What a deal! Food is pretty consistent and they deliver all the way to Aventura. New in the neighborhood is Wing Wan, a little storefront place off the beaten path on 164th and 19th Avenue in NMB, (305.945.3585). And while I have not tried it at the time of this writing, I can guarantee you that by the time you read this article, I will have sampled and made my decision. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Shari Lynn Rothstein has been writing about food, wine, lifestyles, travel and events for more than 20 years, in New York and Florida. She resides in Aventura. 2010 Mazda SPEED3 is a different kind of Mazda 3 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS From a distance, the 2010 Mazda SPEED3 looks a lot like its Mazda3 siblings, with its five-point grille and sleek lines, but slide behind the steering wheel and step on the gas and immediately you will know the difference. The Mazda SPEED3 is a performance car for enthusiasts and that’s why it has become so popular with today’s younger consumers. It blends the five-door functionality of the Mazda3 five-door sedan with more aggressive styling and performance. With the hot new 263 hp MZR 2.3-liter DISI Turbo engine under the hood, the new Mazda SPEED3 builds on the performance of the original, but adds a new look and even better handling. Engine output is more consistent, thanks to the hood-mounted intercooler scoop that not only improves intercooler airflow over the grille-mounted intercooler duct, but also frees grille space for a fresh-air duct to feed the engine’s intake, improving efficiency and boosting power and fuel economy.

The gear ratios in the compact three-shaft gearbox have been revised, with second through fifth gear getting slightly taller to make better use of engine torque and provide a more seamless power delivery. The advanced torque management system also has been recalibrated to better minimize torque steer by adjusting torque output based on gear position and steering angle. As for design, the Mazda SPEED3 is distinguished from its siblings by a lower air dam and round fog lights that frame a metallic black grille. The hood houses an intercooler scoop to improve charge air cooling and the front fenders are flared to accommodate the wider tires. New 18-inch aluminum wheels are modeled on the lightweight forged wheels of the RX-8 R3, while sculpted side skirts and a lower stance intimate the vehicle’s performance capability. The rear is marked by larger dual exhaust tips, a metallic black valance and a larger roof-mounted rear wing. The Nagare-inspired design of the exterior continues into the cabin. Black is the keynote color throughout the interior, while the seats and trim fabric have an organic red graphic design. The design is distributed throughout, with red stitching enhancing the steering wheel, seats, door trim, shift lever boot and center armrest. The dashboard gives a roomy feel to the interior and gauges display infor-

mation high and close to the driver’s field of vision. The instrument cluster includes a new LED turbo boost gauge positioned between the meters. The Mazda SPEED3 is loaded with goodies for the driving enthusiast, yet stripped of anything that would add extra weight. Standard equipment includes variable intermittent windshield wipers, roof-mounted aerodynamic antenna, illuminated vanity

mirrors, electroluminescent gauges, aluminum pedals and dual-zone climate control. Base price on the 2010 Mazda SPEED3 is $23,195. Slims oand Scrumptious features ‘delicious, healthy meals’ BY BARI AUERBACH

On a recent episode of Inside Edition, a woman who looked great in her bikini was eating macaroni and cheese and drinking a chocolate milkshake…so how does she stay so slim while eating such scrumptious treats? Just ask nutritionist Joy Bauer, author of the cookbook Slim and Scrumptious featuring more than 75 delicious, healthy meals she promises families will love. According to Bauer,”You can absolutely eat rich, decadent, delicious over the top food and still be in the best shape of your life.” Appearing on Inside Edition, Andrea Dinowitz says she lost 40 pounds in three months by following the rich recipes in Slim and Scrumptious. “I love all these recipes and I don’t feel like I’m depriving myself,” Dinowitz said. “Every time I prepare a meal I feel like I’m splurging.” One of her favorite meals is macaroni and cheese. She cuts calories from this usually fattening dish by using whole wheat macaroni, reduced fat cheese, and skim milk. “For a cup and a half of traditional macaroni and cheese it’ll cost you about 850 calories and more than 40 grams of fat,” Bauer explains. “In my version, it’s only 420 calories and 75 percent less fat.” Bauer also says you can even indulge in “decadent” desserts without sabotaging your diet. Her version of a chocolate milkshake is made with fat free evaporated milk and reduced fat whipped cream – adding up to only 150 calories. Bauer’s “scrumptious” cookies also have a secret ingredient. “I trim an enormous amount of calories by using natural unsweetened applesauce,” she says. Slim and Scrumptious features recipes for every meal and every taste. Whether you want Double Chocolate Pancakes or

Eggs Benedict for breakfast, Sesame Chicken Tenders or Spicy Pork Tacos with Sassy Slaw for lunch, or Spice-Rubbed Flank Steak with Chimichurri and Creamy Spinach for dinner – Bauer shows you that classic, rich food can still be made to taste great with just a fraction of the fat and calories. I’m a senior and I’m really worried about something. There’s a part of every application that your high school counselor must fill out and I’m very upset about this because my counselor doesn’t even know who I am. What do I do? Your counselor doesn’t know who you are because they are all overworked. They have way too many children. For those people who are in ninth and 10th grade, I suggest that you frequently meet with your counselors. Once a month, request a meeting. For someone in 12th grade, I sincerely understand the problem. Take an activities list (if you need help you can call me and ill tell you how to do it) and go into your counselor with that list and the paper from your application. It is very difficult for your counselors to sit and write recommendations for 900 kids. What do think about all the expenses that high school kids now have? And I mean across the board at Southridge, Killian, and every high school in Dade County, specifically, my daughter in her junior year wants a ring. The price of the ring is $500 and believe it or not all her friends are getting it. I do believe it and I don’t like it. Between the rings, graduation, prom dresses and everything combined, it’s an easy $1,500 that most people do not have. It’s up to the parents to get involved. Go to the school and do something about this. This can only be done if you speak with the officials and get a group of people together, because spending $500 on a ring is ridiculous. I know they do have them cheaper than $500, but most of the kids want the $500 one. I’ve seen three so far this week myself. I’m not doing well in AP History. I’ve got a C and I would like to switch to honors. What is your opinion of this? My counselor says that the colleges would rather see a C in an AP than an A or B in honors. What do you think? I used to teach AP History it is memorization and memorization and memo-

rization and, of course, the writing. You explained to me when I called you that you have trouble with the writing section. That you can get a tutor for, but if you find that you are far behind and really need to get out of the class, my rule of thumb is that colleges do not want to see any C grades. If you cannot make an A or a B, do not take the AP class. Please contact me if I can be of further assistance.

My parents want me to become either a doctor or a lawyer but I don’t think I’m interested in either profession. How do I deal with this? Everyone in my family is a doctor or a lawyer. I think you must understand that ultimately you have control your choice of a profession. Sometimes this can be very difficult. I would not fight, I would not argue and I would also keep an open mind and meet your parents half way. When you enter college, explore different courses and find out what you like. You may even find out that you like the idea of being a doctor or a lawyer. After you are in college and decide what you want to major in, you may have a problem with your family supporting you financially. You haven’t mentioned that in your question. If that does become a problem, you can go to another school where the tuition is lower. If you are in a private school, you may have to take the responsibility of putting yourself through college. Again, ultimately this is your life and you have to take hold of it and own it. I just received my grades, fives As and one B plus. My parents weren’t impressed and all they could talk about was that one B and why I didn’t get an A. I really am trying, but it’s even more difficult when they pressure me. Continue to try and do your best. It’s unfortunate that your parents can’t appreciate your high marks. As long as you know how hard you are working and giving your maximum, be proud of yourself. Dine at Thira for a little bit of Greece in Hallandale BY LEE STEPHENS

A summer vacation to Greece may not be in your plans, but you can get a taste of the Mediterranean by dining at Thira in Hallandale Beach, where the cuisine is prepared with the freshest ingredients and the friendly staff will make you feel like you’re visiting a Greek family home. Thira, celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, is owned and operated by the Morfidis family and to ensure that every guest has a memorable dining experience, at least one family member is at the restaurant at all times. The casually elegant interior of Thira features a palette of deep blue and creamy white, recalling the colors of the surf on the Mediterranean Sea. Graceful arches draped with sheer white fabric separate different areas of the dining room, creating cozy spaces within the 200-seat interior. Paintings portraying the Greek islands and the seaside grace the walls, conjuring the sense of a Mediterranean holiday. Wood tables are covered with starched white cloths and a horseshoe-shaped oak bar in the center of the room is perfect for friends to gather for drinks. The wine list offers domestic favorites, but focuses on Greek vintages. An attractive patio offers comfortable alfresco dining and also accommodates smokers. For special events such as birthdays, anniversaries, bar and bat mitzvahs, wedding showers and rehearsal dinners, there is a private room. Catering is also available, so you can stage your party at home without worrying about the cooking.

AUTHENTIC, FRESH, MADE TO ORDER Authentic Greek cuisine is prepared from top-quality produce and the freshest seafood and meats. Ingredients like olive oil, balsamic vinegar, olives and feta cheese are imported from Greece. Many items on

G N I N DI OUT the menu at Thira are based on the Morfidis’ traditional family recipes. The owners believe that a dish can only be as good as what goes into it, so they start with the very best that’s available.

DELICIOUS YET HEALTHFUL Many experts agree that the traditional Mediterranean diet is a healthful one. A plentiful amount of vegetables, herbs and olive oil contribute to fare that is low in saturated fats. With everything made from scratch and with fresh ingredients, diners can refrain from preservatives and other food additives they may want to avoid. While there are many delicious meat and fish dishes, vegetarian diners will find a variety of tasty and interesting menu items to choose from. There are also alternatives for those who prefer something other than Greek cuisine. The menu offers enough choices so everyone will find something that pleases. MODERATE PRICES Although Thira offers the freshest food and a stylish ambience, prices are moderate. Lunches start at just $4.95. Appetizers are priced from $3 and entrees begin at $13. Money-saving lunch, sunset and Happy Hour specials are offered every day. Diners looking for an experience that is memorable, special and a great value will find it at Thira. You will want to return often, and not just for special occasions or on weekends. ON THE MENU Among the appetizers are house-made

Thira, authentic Greek cuisine in Hallandale Beach. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

hummus (creamy, chickpea and garlic spread); gyro (seasoned strips of broiled lamb and beef); dolmadakia (grape leaves stuffed with rice and herbs, served with avgolemeno sauce); panakopita (spinach pie with feta and green onions, wrapped in flaky filo pastry); saganaki (pan-fried kefaloteri cheese); loukanik (grilled country sausage with roasted peppers; taramosalata (whipped caviar spread); keftedes (charbroiled Greek meatballs with traditional spices); and metilzanosalata (grilled eggplant spread with garlic, olive oil, red peppers and tomatoes). Entrees include thalasovouno (char-grilled lamb chops and sautéed jumbo shrimp); mousaka (traditional casserole of eggplant, potatoes, and seasoned beef topped with béchamel sauce); paidaki moschari (14-ounce grilled veal chop marinated in olive oil, garlic, parsley and rose-

mary served with creamy feta mashed potatoes and sautéed mushrooms; youvetsi (aromatic braised lamb shank with orzo, topped with freshly shaved kefaloteri cheese); whole, char-grilled snapper with lemon and oregano; whole grilled Chilean sea bass with rice pilaf; baked grouper with tomatoes, olives, potatoes, onions, carrots and oregano in white wine; and jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce.

GREAT SERVICE Service at Thira is prompt, attentive and professional, but also relaxed. “The staff is trained to make our guests feel special, and also as comfortable as if they were at home.” Thira – like the Greek Isle it is named for, if you visit once, you’ll want to return again and again!
