Cascading Avalanches
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING When things start to go wrong they often continue to go wrong much like an avalanche rolling down a hill gathering momentum and getting larger and larger as it goes. An avalanche overtakes and consumes everything in its path. There is no way to stop it. In real life, one thing after another can just keep happening; the roof leaks, the car breaks down, the IRS calls, you lose your wallet, loved ones become ill and so on and on it goes. The sheer force of all of the negative events can smother you and leave you feeling out-of-control, overwhelmed, disheartened, vulnerable, weak and powerless. How do you stop an avalanche? You can’t. So don’t let it get started. Don’t let that first negative thought snowball into an avalanche of negative thoughts. Stop the cascade. Stand up, plant your feet firmly and stop tumbling down the moun-
tain. Use the power of your mind to change the nature and the direction of your thoughts. When the first event occurs, don’t think, “Oh No, It’s going to be a bad day.” Don’t expect other things to happen, go bad or get worse. Remove the belief that things are inevitable. Refuse to let the event or your thoughts about it, define and determine your day or your life. Dismiss any trepidation you feel. Minimize the event in your mind. Demystify the event. It is not an omen of things to come. It is not significant. Do not let the event and your thoughts snowball rapidly into an avalanche. Don’t get buried under the weight of your fear and your false beliefs. Remind yourself of your power to change your thoughts and change your life In real life, you create your own avalanche of negative thoughts which can escalate into negative events. So, if you create it, you can change it. No one thinks in your head but you. What your mind has created, your mind can change. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Can a cheater be a leader?
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS The current issue raised as to Anthony Wiener’s New York Mayoral candidacy is “Can a cheater be a leader”? Recent public opinion polls indicate “No!” The story of our presidents, however, gives a different answer. Many of our leading presidents were disloyal to their wives or committed adultery, included Jefferson, FDR, Wilson, Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Eisenhower, and Clinton. An example is appropriate. It can be argued that Jefferson’s behavior was far more despicable than that of Weiner. According to Pulitzer Prize author Jon Meacham, Jefferson, as a young single lawyer in his late 20’s, was “virile, wanted what he wanted, and did not give up easily.” Elizabeth Moore, known as Betsy, was the future wife of John Walker, who attended William and Mary College with Jefferson. Jefferson became Walker’s closest friend, serving as groomsman at the Walker-Betsy wedding. A rising man in Virginia politics, Walker became part of a delegation bound
for Fort -Stanwix, in New York, for Indian negotiations. Before leaving, Walker appointed Jefferson as executor of his will. He totally trusted Jefferson to take care of Betsy. While Walker was away, however, Jefferson continually tried to induce Betsy into a sexual relationship. Betsy resisted, but “Jefferson did not give up.” Although Betsy kept Jefferson’s advances secret, she manifested herself to her husband indirectly. She objected to Jefferson serving as executor and “wondered why (he) placed such confidence in him.” Jefferson kept after Betsy. Several years later, Jefferson slipped a note to Betsy “trying to convince her of the innocence of promiscuous love.” Betsy “tore Jefferson’s note to pieces.” Later, at the party of a mutual friend, the women retired early for the night. Jefferson “pretended to be sick,” left the gentlemen (including Walker), slipped away, found Betsy’s room, where she “was undressing or in bed.” Jefferson was again repulsed by Betsy, “with indignation and menaces of alarm.” Walker later found out about Jefferson’s attempted adultery. When Jefferson ran for president in 1800, Walker went public about Jefferson’s wrongful behavior. Despite publicly admitting his cheating conduct, Jefferson won the election and is recognized as one of our greatest presidents.

Interventional cardiology consists of a series of non-surgical, minimally invasive procedures performed to treat cardiovascular disease. During a typical interventional cardiology procedure, a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel through a small incision in the groin and guided to the heart, enabling doctors to repair damaged vessels or other heart structures. Interventional cardiology is often used to treat coronary artery disease, or the blockage of arteries. The inner surfaces of the arteries become blocked or dangerously narrowed by a buildup of fatty deposits, cholesterol, calcium and plaque. The blockage restricts blood flow to the heart, which can lead to a heart attack or other heart problems. To determine if a patient has coronary artery disease, an intravascular ultrasound is performed which is a special device used to get a better look at the artery. Pressure wires are then used to measure the pressure in the artery to see if the blockage is severe. If there is severe blockage, angioplasty and stenting may be performed. In these procedures, a balloon placed at the tip of the
catheter is inflated to stretch open the artery and restore blood flow to the heart. When necessary, a stent – a small metal mesh tube – is expanded in the newly opened artery to act as a scaffold and keep the artery open. Risk factors for coronary artery disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes and obesity. Men who are in their 50s and older are at a greater risk of developing coronary artery disease, as are women who are in their 60s or older. Patients who have coronary artery disease do not always experience chest pain, but some physical symptoms include shortness of breath, neck or jaw pain, sweating and nausea. We are very fortunate that Mount Sinai Medical Center’s freestanding emergency room in Aventura is equipped with state-ofthe-art equipment that can very rapidly evaluate patients suffering from coronary artery disease. If emergency catheterization is required, we have ambulances on standby to transport patients to our Miami Beach campus for immediate treatment. Dr. Todd Heimowitz is an interventional cardiologist and member of the Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He sees patients at Mount Sinai’s main campus in Miami Beach, as well as Mount Sinai’s multi-specialty physician office in Aventura. Nissan adds hybrid model to 2014 Pathfinder lineup Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Nissan introduced the fourth-generation of the Pathfinder last year, so it’s pretty much the same seven-passenger SUV for 2014. There is, however, a major change in power options with the first-ever Pathfinder Hybrid. Powered by a supercharged 2.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor mated to a compact Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery, the Pathfinder Hybrid has the same seating capacity, second- or third-row legroom and cargo space of non-Hybrid models. The hybrid system uses a Nissan Intelligent Dual Clutch System (one motor/two clutch parallel system) that efficiently manages power from both the electric motor and the gas engine. The 15 kW electric motor and gas engine work in tandem to provide performance equivalent to the non-hybrid Pathfinder’s gasoline engine. The hybrid system is rated at 250 net hp and 243 pound-feet of torque (versus the gas engine ratings of 260 hp and 240 pound-feet
of torque). The Pathfinder Hybrid will be available in showrooms in early fall. The non-hybrid Pathfinder continues with a 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 engine mated to a nextgeneration Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), delivering fuel economy rated at 20/26/22 (city/highway/combined) in the 2WD model and only slightly less for the 4WD version. The power combination delivers responsive acceleration in a variety of conditions. The CVT holds the engine at the ideal rpm for existing conditions, offering responsive power for passing or towing when needed and quiet, efficient running at cruising speeds or around town. With the available intuitive four-wheel drive, Pathfinder is an excellent vehicle for bad-weather driving conditions with the selectable 2WD, Auto or 4WD Lock modes for its available intuitive ALL-MODE 4x4-i system. The system lets you choose full-time 2WD for maximum fuel economy, Auto mode to automatically monitor conditions and adjust the balance of power between front and rear wheels for best traction, or 4WD Lock mode when you need full-time 4WD. Also, standard on Pathfinder is Hill Start Assist for better control when starting and driving away on a steep incline (both 4WD and 2WD models) and it has a standard
Pathfinder has a low beltline, a wide chrome grille and large aerodynamic headlights.
5,000-pound towing capacity, perfect for hauling boats, jet skis, trailers and other recreational gear. As for styling, Pathfinder has an upper body with an open cabin, a low beltline and thin A- and D-pillars that flow smoothly into the rugged, durable-looking lower body. The new generation unibody weighs almost 500 pounds less than the previous generation Pathfinder’s body-on-frame design, which contributes to the better fuel economy. Up front, there is a wide chrome grille and large aerodynamic headlights, recessed front
windshield wipers, chrome door handles, with large combination lights to the rear. Also new is the SL Tech Package with a Bose 13-speaker Premium Audio and Nissan Navigation System. Pricing on the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder ranges from $28,700 to $41,200. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. New traffic light ‘delights’ Biscayne Cove and Aventura neighbors BY BARI AUERBACH
The formerly four-way stop sign intersection at NE 185th Street and NE 28th Court (on the busy Miami Gardens Drive extension near Walgreens and an Aventura Chabad) will now have traffic light signals - much to the delight of Biscayne Cove residents and their Aventura neighbors. According to Aventura City Manager Eric Soroka, the new traffic lights highlight the city’s “continuing effort to address the needs and concerns of our citizens” and are part of the City’s 2013-2018 capital improvements program. Biscayne Cove resident Cecile Pogoda is especially delighted to see the new traffic lights go up. After previously helping to ensure arrows were added to lights to alleviate right-of-way confusion at the intersection of Williams Island Boulevard and NE 31st Court/31st Avenue, Cecile, supported by Biscayne Cove board president Madeline Giardiello, contacted the City of Aventura. She inquired if public safety could also be enhanced by installing traffic lights at the intersection of NE 185th Street and NE 28th Court. Subsequently, responsive efforts were made by city staff members including Alan Levine, Public Works Operations Manager and Tony Tomei, Capital Projects Manager. They continuously provided informative updates on the process and timeframe for completion of the traffic light installation. Beyond the new traffic lights, Aventura

residents are also delighted that the city’s 2013-2018 over $13 million capital improvements program includes 30 projects relating to transportation; beautification and parks facilities; drainage and infrastructure; information/communication technology; and public buildings and facilities improvements. Major emphasis is being placed on traffic safety and flow, road resurfacing, park and street lighting upgrades, and stormwater drainage improvements. Miami-Dade’s construction of the Northeast Branch Library on Aventura Boulevard is also scheduled for completion this December. Biscayne Cove encourages Aventura residents to play an active role in the community by attending City meetings, getting involved and sharing proactive suggestions. Iss thee demisee off thee NCAA A att hand?
As college football’s appeal continues to increase, the NCAA’s popularity is trending downwards — and quickly. We just passed the twoyear anniversary of the Yahoo! Sports tell-all of Nevin Shapiro, the disgraced, former University of Miami booster. His allegations included impermissible benefits both routine and debaucherous — from cash and gifts, to prostitutes and an abortion. Now, two years later, the University of Miami is still waiting; waiting on a punishment, something to end the years of confusion and angst. But tread carefully NCAA, you’re already in dangerous waters. If the oft-maligned leaders of college football are punitive on the Hurricanes — who have already self-imposed a ban on two bowl games — school president Donna Shalala is ready to play ball. When the school received its Notice of Allegations in February, Shalala put out an open letter that listed the repeated failures of the NCAA during its investigation and detailed UM’s plan to respond negatively to the Notice. “We deeply regret any violations, but we have suffered enough,” Shalala wrote.
Here we are on the precipice of another season and still no word from the NCAA. If only the UM was their only issue. In College Station reports have surfaced that Texas A&M University’s Heisman Trophywinning quarterback Johnny Manziel took improper benefits for signing autographs. Problem is the NCAA can’t find concrete evidence. And Manziel is worth a whole lot, to A&M, the NCAA and his parents’ bank account. And just like Shalala, Manziel is ready to play ball — literally and figuratively. He’s puffing out his chest and spreading his shoulders to the NCAA. Come on, let’s go. Challenge me. Suspend the player who has proved so valuable. Let’s see what happens. For anyone who wants to see the NCAA shamed, this is a good situation. In one situation, Manziel gets off because the NCAA can’t find any proof of payment. In the other, he gets suspended. And, rest assured, Manziel and his family will fight it with the lawyers they bring in. In the first situation, the media will mock the NCAA’s apparent lack of control of players. In the second, well, it could turn messy, and that would be great! The NCAA has operated dangerously. It overstepped its bounds in the Penn State University case by levying penalties in an unprecedented manner. Its punitive rules
recently forced a women’s golfer at a lowertier university to repay $20 for washing her car with a hose that was only available for athletes. It also has a corrupted system involving poor athletes who don’t have the means to pay for their own meals and can’t afford to pay for their parents and family to attend games. Now, schools continue to obey the NCAA and players continue to play because, well, what other choice do they have? If you want to play professional football, you have to play in the NCAA first. There isn’t an option; it’s the way it is. For a school to play other high-caliber teams, they must be a part of the NCAA. There is no choice. That is, unless, a group of schools were to get together and leave the NCAA. And the SEC, the biggest division in all of college football, has the best opportunity to do so. The conference has athletic directors and players that are infuriated by the NCAA. And they have the money. If they were to leave, it would be the beginning of the end for the NCAA. But it shouldn’t have to be that way. The NCAA should be able to operate in a fair and equitable manner. If you remember your days in a high school civics class, you will recall the phrase “checks and balances” — a governmental method of separating powers in order to ensure that no branch reigns supreme. Since
CORNER the NCAA is an autonomous body, it has no checks or balances. It operates on its own accord, in whatever manner suits it best. In the UM investigation, the NCAA is operating in the name of validating its investigation — and its existence. Officials need to prove that this matter was worth more than two years of their time. But they are not operating in the name of fairness. A group of schools leaving the NCAA is a last-ditch effort. The NCAA still has time to right its wrongs, and it can. But it’s not trending that way. Preston Michelson is a freshman at the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism and is a graduate of Palmer Trinity School.
