O

n sunny days in South Florida we take our health for granted, don’t we? But when we experience dizziness or chest pain…it’s off to the emergency room. With waits as low as 6 minutes, we’ve come to expect the immediate care at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. Heck, just the blinking billboards displaying the emergency room wait time is reassuring when you’re counting the minutes.

Just a few short years ago, a trip to the emergency room would mean an hourslong wait. So how did the emergency room change so dramatically? “We recognized our wait times were stalling our ability to provide effective care and made a commitment to change the process,” said Heather Rohan, CEO of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. “We conducted efficiency audits and consulted with Fire Rescue to find every

area where we could improve the patient experience. Five years later, our ER routinely sees 170 patients per day, but you would never know it by visiting the waiting room because we created a process where a physician or physician’s assistant conducts rapid medical evaluations at the bedside to expedite care.” Their dedication to improving did not go unnoticed, and Aventura resident Stu Wagner is living proof... literally!

He recounts: In March 2009, I experienced strong chest pains. Though I had no other symptom and did not think it was a heart attack, I asked my wife to drive me to Aventura Hospital. We illegally parked outside the emergency room and told the receptionist I was having chest pains. –––––––––––– See

Flying high with Cliff Schulman

“Flying high” took on a whole new meaning for Cliff Schulman, partner in the law firm of Weiss Serota Helfman and Chairman of the Board of the Aventura Marketing Council. Schulman was given a very special birthday present from his wife Lauren — the opportunity to fly his own plane — with a pilot by his side — and participate in an aerial ‘dogfight’. “Flying a plane in a real life dogfight was like being a kid again. One more off the bucket list.”

Attorney Eric Kane... giving back to his community Aventura attorney Eric Kane not only claims many Aventura residents and businesses as clients, but spends a great deal of time volunteering his time and expertise with charities and organizations such as the Greater Miami Jewish Federation Foundation, Miami-Dade Israel Bonds and Florida Int. University College of Nursing. This spring, he’ll be speaking on the topic of estate planning to attorneys, accountants and financial advisors, as well as speaking to local residents.

The gift not received

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING What if, this Holiday Season, you did not get the gift that you hoped for or wanted? You are probably feeling sad and unhappy. When desires and expectations are not fulfilled it is understandable to feel let down, frustrated, disappointed and discouraged. Disappointments are not limited to the Holidays they can occur any time. A lost promotion or broken engagement are just a few examples of what can occur. Something that you counted on did not happen. You trusted it would happen you might even have relied on it. You thought you were standing on a rock but it turned out to be sand and it collapsed taking your hopes with it. This shakes you up. You feel shocked and vulnerable because the things you have taken for granted are really out of your control. If it is a big disappointment you might question your beliefs and assumptions. You might lose faith in God,

your parents, partners and yourself. Disappointment can be a conundrum, a riddle of sorts. It is an enigma because you have to guess at the hidden meaning. Why did it happen? It is a baffling mystery that is difficult to understand and even more difficult to resolve. A helpful technique is to ask yourself what it meant to you. What was the real reason you wanted the gift or promotion. Did the gift mean that you were cared about and loved? Did it mean that someone was paying attention to your wants and desires? Was it related to your insecurity? Did the promotion mean that you were respected and acknowledged and better than your co-workers? Was it related to your self-esteem? Once you understand why you are disappointed, the sting will be gone. You will have solved the puzzle. You will have decoded the hidden meaning. This will remove the feelings of disappointment and give you insight and a better understanding of your real needs and desires. Then you can focus on alternate ways of obtaining and satisfying them. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864.

New Starts

Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY Just about everyone makes New Year’s resolutions they may or may not wind up keeping – but here are some new ones you might want to add to the “Aventura list”: Start a Diet: Instead of a whole ice cream sundae – just get one scoop – and if being more social and frugal are also among your resolutions, invite a few friends to share your favorite flavor! Start Cooking: Now that both of Aventura’s Burger Kings are gone, you might have to start making dinner more often – unless you don’t mind driving a little further to find another drive-thru! Start Exercising: You could be inspired to start walking or jogging around the Aventura Circle – only if you don’t discover the big secret: All those fit looking people are actually models paid by the city to make Aventura look in such great shape!

Start Conversations: If you’re still searching for your soul mate, try striking up a conversation at a market with really narrow aisles so you can’t help but getting up close and personal with someone special. While at Starbucks, you could also offer to pay for an intriguing person’s Frappuccino…Even if you don’t get a date, you’ll still get reward points if you use your Gold Card! Start Budgeting: Around this time of year, lots of people resolve to start saving more and spending less – but with the Aventura Mall so close to home, it’s hard not to do the exact opposite. But who needs financial advisors when you’ve got so many friends who can always alert you about all the best bargains around town! Start Returning: Now would be a good time to return some holiday gifts since it’s finally possible to find a parking spot before your toddlers turn into teens. And if you’re going to return that ugly sweater from Aunt Betty, make sure you’ve already lost enough weight to be able to run really fast if you see her in the same return line! Start Preparing to enjoy another great year in Aventura, where there’s at least 2012 reasons to exclaim: “I love life in the city!”

Your neighbohood store-presenting the work of many artists and craftspeople, opening our minds to the possibilities they offer. Come see our remarkable selection of gifts and handmade jewelry. Dare to be Different!

Author recounts his journey Aventura Hospital to find God in new book and Medical Center

BY BRIAN MCLENDON

The latest studies find that nearly one in three Americans will change their religious affiliation at some point in their lives. We are, more than ever, a nation of God hoppers. For New York Times bestselling author and former NPR foreign correspondent Eric Weiner — an agnostic by default — a health scare that put him briefly in the hospital leads him on an unexpected exploration of faith. While in pain and awaiting a diagnosis, a well-meaning nurse asks him a simple, blunt question: “Have you found your God yet?” This out of the blue query nags, prods, and ultimately launches him on a far-flung journey to do just that. The result is Man Seeks God: My Flirtations with the Divine, a funny, illuminating chronicle of his globe-spanning spiritual quest to find a faith that fits. Weiner, a longtime “spiritual voyeur” and inveterate traveler, realizes that while he has been privy to a wide range of religious practices, he’s never seriously considered these concepts in his own life. Face to face with his own mortality, and spurred on by the question of what spiritual principles to impart to his young daughter, he decides to correct this omission, What happens when we die? Stuart Wagner –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

David Cohen –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Expecting a long wait, my wife went to re-park. Upon returning, I was already undergoing various tests. Within 20 minutes I was on an operating table ready to receive three life-saving stents. Mr. Wagner is not alone in his praise of the streamlined care: David Cohen said, My emergency care was incredible! Within two minutes of arriving at the emergency room, a physician was examining me and immediately began tests. I can’t stop telling everyone how wonderfully I was treated. Aventura Commissioner and Aventura Hospital and Medical Center Board of Trustee Bob Diamond recently received a call that a friend was in transit to the emergency room. Within minutes, Comm. Diamond was in the waiting room, but his friend was already in treatment. Comm. Diamond decided to approach people in the waiting room to see how long they were waiting to be

seen. To his surprise, not one stated they were a patient; they were the friend or relative of a patient already undergoing evaluation. In the five years since Aventura Hospital resolved to improve the public perception of emergency care, the emergency team received the EMCARE Genesis Cup. Given to only one hospital per year in the EMCARE network, the national award celebrates the hospital with the most improved processes. Although the hospital has reason to celebrate, Aventura Hospital and Medical Center refuses to rest on its laurels and continues to research new opportunities for perfecting its emergency room care for the community.

The Adrienne Arsht Center for The Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County presents the 10th Anniversary production of Ne 2nd Avenue The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County proudly presents the 10th anniversary production of NE 2ND AVENUE, an award-winning emotional, often humorous one-man play portraying the profoundly rich and textured mix of real Miami neighborhoods. Created and performed by Miami’s Teo Castellanos, NE 2ND AVENUE plays in the intimate Carnival Studio Theater (Ziff Ballet Opera House) from January 19-21, as part of the Theater Up Close season. Directed by Michael Garces, NE 2ND AVENUE depicts the lives of eight distinct characters: a Puerto Rican small-time drug dealer, a deprived African-American young lady, a Haitian jitney driver, a Cuban-Jewish grandfather, a Rasta Man, an African-American adolescent trying to find his footing in life, a Cuban rafter and a gay man, who each take the audience on a memorable journey through the intense streets of Miami. Through its characters, NE 2ND AVENUE brings voice to Miami’s marginalized urban populations, exploring underlying issues of racism and social injustice, acknowledging the differences among us and ultimately discovering the common threads that bind us together. “As one of South Florida’s premier performing arts institutions, it is key to the Arsht Center’s mission to showcase local talent and Miami-made

productions such as NE 2nd Avenue,” said M. John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “We’re certain Teo Castellanos’ critically-acclaimed play will once again resonate with our city’s melting pot of cultures.” Tickets to NE 2ND AVENUE are $35 and may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling 305-949-6722 or online at arshtcenter.org.

RayPrinciotta ON REAL ESTATE OK, so you’ve decided to sell. Your property is not in distress, and you still have equity you want to protect. It’s a major decision, probably one of the biggest ones you’ll ever make and you want to do it right. The difference between a sale or no sale often rests on a only few key factors. Become familiar with these deal killers and you jumpstart your efforts as you towards your goal of closing the sale. #1 OVERPRICING is the single biggest problem a seller must overcome. You might think your condo is worth the big money it used to be, back before the real estate market sank. Unfortunately, times have changed. With all the information available on the Internet, buyers are profoundly aware of today’s market prices. You need to get serious. TIPS: Visit the competition by going to Open Houses in similar buil-dings; check out listings for

Page 11

5 Real Estate Deal Killers - and What Sellers Can Do To Prevent It similar pro-perties online and in the newspapers; and contact multiple real estate agents and get their opinion on your price.

#2 CLUTTER, DIRT, AND ODOR can take thousands off the price, and at worst case make buyers run away. This is a big purchase in a bad market so it’s up to you to make sure your condo shows favorably: clean, sweet smelling and clutter free. TIPS: Clear out all the unwanted stuff, donate or pack away your old collections, make sure table and counter tops are bare.

Banish old pet beds, air out stale odors and use neutral air freshener. #3 HIGHLY PERSONALIZED TASTE can kill a sale. Sellers can run into problems when the decor is too unique to allow the buyer to imagine himself or herself living in the home. Unusual wall colors, floor and window treatments can be a turn-off. (it always makes me laugh when watch HGTV and I see Buyers walking through a home for sale and their biggest complaint is the color, but that is what people see...so don't fight it, fix it). To get top dollar in your neighborhood it’s important to “neutralize” your condo to conform with popular tastes. TIP: Check with local real estate agents and prepare a checklist of work that needs to be done inside and outside the property. The real estate agent can help you prioritize the list before you make a big investment in presale remodeling. Also consider hiring a

professional home stager. Do whatever will bring you the best return for the changes you make.

#4 MISLEADING DEAL INFORMATION is a sure-fire deal killer. Photos that are highly edited or property described as an “approved” short sale when a bank approved a previous offer and will require new offers to go through an approval process again, are common examples of misrepresentations. TIP: It is important for Sellers and Agents to be upfront and honest. Enough said! #5 OVERBEARING SELLERS can easily and often inadvertently queer a deal. TIP: Back away and let the real estate agent do his job. These 5 Deal Killers above are in the seller's control. There is however another issue that kills many deals that is not in the seller's control - many appraisals are coming in less than contract price due to the large number of distressed property sales. This is a big problem with financed purchases. So pricing the property correctly is even more important.

It’s never too late to be part of Public Education, Office of Dr. Martin Karp, School Board Member, District 3 Due to State budget reductions and the absence of a dedicated source of income specifically designed to fund public education, the School Board of MiamiDade County has approved reductions in district operations and maintenance. Through careful planning and precise cuts, the school district is accomplishing its mission and has avoided laying off a single full-time teacher for economic reasons. While a number of scenarios and possibilities may always emerge from next year’s legislative session in Tallahassee that could improve or worsen our financial situation, it has become perfectly clear that austere times are here to stay. Permanent adjustments are needed if the School District is going to survive the tempest that may lie ahead. The District can start by identifying the talent that resides in this community. A concerted effort should be made to attract the participation of talented retirees that are some of our most valuable assets. This is

why the office of school board member Dr. Martin Karp presented and obtained approval for a proposal developing an energetic volunteer program called ACTIVE, which stands for Active Citizens Teaching Individuals Valuable Expertise. This volunteer initiative enables retired individuals to participate in various district educational and maintenance related projects. Since its inception earlier this year, and with the full support of the Superintendent, the District has been recruiting talented individuals to become an integral part of our school district. 2012 Scion iQ is a big idea in a small package Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The new Scion iQ is the latest vehicle to join the growing list of micro-subcompacts that many auto manufacturers are offering American consumers. Measuring just 10 feet in length and with the capability of seating four people, Scion is billing the iQ as the world’s smallest fourseat vehicle. The iQ is a three-door hatchback with a geometric shape and it should give the Smart Car a run for its money. It has a strong, high beltline that runs from the large headlights, up the A-pillar and across the roof to wrap around the rear. Side mirrors with integrated turn signals accent the geometric design. The iQ is billed as a premium micro-subcompact and it is intelligently designed, with six engineering innovations basically responsible for its ability to be small in size, but large in capability. They are: • A compact front-mounted differential; • A high-mount steering rack with electronic power-steering;

• A compact air-conditioning unit; • A flat gas tank housed beneath the floor; • Slim-back front seats that optimize rear legroom, and • A 3+1 offset seating arrangement that allows one adult to sit behind the front passenger and a child or small package behind the driver. The iQ has a 78.7-inch wheelbase and a unique suspension design of MacPherson struts up front and a compact torsion beam in the rear. The combination allows the little car to maneuver through city traffic much easier than a larger vehicle. The overall length of just 120.1-inches and short front and rear overhangs allows the iQ to slip into virtually any urban parking space. At the same time, the iQ has a wide track of 66.1 inches for solid handling, much like a larger sports car. The 2012 iQ is powered by a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 94 hp and 89 pounds-feet of torque. It also has the latest dual VVT-i, allowing the engine to operate efficiently and deliver a broader powerband, yet requiring less fuel and generating fewer emissions. The engine is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for smooth acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency of 37 mpg. The iQ comes standard with safety features that consumers expect and demand. It has 11

standard airbags, including the world’s first rear-window airbag, along with driver and front passenger airbags; driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags; side curtain airbags; driver and front passenger knee airbags, and (a Scion first) driver and front passenger seat-cushion airbags. All iQs have the Star Safety System, which includes anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRAC),

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Smart Stop Technology brake-override. A tire-pressure monitoring system also is standard equipment. Pricing on the Scion iQ starts at $15,265. Buffalo Bill still alive in Cody, Wyoming BY BILL KOFOED

Buffalo Bill is such a major part of Cody, Wyoming that he is still very much alive to townspeople and to the over 200,000 visitors from all 50 states and many parts of the world who visit there each year. Taken from Buffalo Bill’s last name, Cody is located 53 miles from the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It is there visitors will find the 30,000 square foot Buffalo Bill Historical Museum, which chronicles his life from age eight when he started to work through his years as a Pony Express rider, scout, Indian fighter, actor and operator of the famous Wild West show which toured the country and parts of Europe. Aside from the section about Buffalo Bill, one of the most interesting parts of the Historical Center is the one about firearms. You’ll see Gatling guns, blunderbusses, flintlock pistols, long rifles, and even a gun

owned by King Louis XIII of France. There are also water cooled machine guns, Springfield rifles, and ceremonial guns owned by Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Another section features the Whitney Gallery of Western Art, with scores of paintings by many well-known artists. One of the most dramatic is Custer’s Last Stand at the Little Bighorn, about a two hour drive from Cody. Other sections are devoted to the Plains Indians and Natural History. Besides the exhibits, the Center offers a variety of different programs during the summer months. The original Buffalo Bill Museum opened in 1927 in the historic log building that is now the Cody Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce. In 1968 the current museum opened. The most recent addition was in 2002 when the Draper Museum of Natural History made its debut. For further information, e-mail LeeH@BBHC.org

Addicted to Asian Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer

EAT THIS... DRINK THAT The last column I wrote (which was before I “disappeared” for 10 days during the end of 2011) was about Chow Down Grill & Lounge, an amazing Chinese food eatery (well, actually two – one location is in Surfside on Harding Ave. and the other in South Beach on 9th and Alton), which happens to be the closest thing to “New Yorkstyle” Chinese food (sans the MSG, cornstarch, and added sugar) that I have tasted since coming to Florida. Every time I go there – and I tend to head to the South Beach location, although the intimate Surfside space is just around the corner from my condo in Aventura, I try something new. This time it was the organic chicken wings, which were tiny, perfectly fried, and super-delish and Pork Chow Fun, which provided thick rice noodles with just the right amount of chewy and give; and were filled with flavor. Since then, I have been obsessed with Asian food, eating it everywhere (partially to compare, also because I cannot get enough and it is embarrassing returning to the same place day after day) and I cannot get enough of it in my body. Mostly Chinese, Chef Josh makes the best sweet and sour tofu in town - hands down, but there isn’t much competition, after all – who makes their own? I stop into Mr. Chef in Aventura solely because I can walk there. I admit, they do have a decent shrimp & lobster sauce – the shrimp are big and tasty – and are cooked just enough to pop when I bite into one. Eggrolls, one of my “guilty pleasures”, are always tough. Why? Because you grow up with “long and thin” or with more “girth” and that’s what you get used to, so by the time you are a grown-up – only one way will work. I like mine thicker – Mr. Chef’s are thin. It doesn’t make them bad…just different. I also crave Japanese quite often. I look

at sushi and sashimi as food groups. I’ve been motoring over to Katana (on 71st street) for the inexpensive plates of fish that are moved round and round on a water belt. I love the salmon sashimi. Served on a bed of onion (which I could do without!) and a dollop of mustard sauce (which I love), it could be one of the greatest surprises…ever! The salmon is sweet and buttery, just the right amount of fat and flesh…true beauty. The spicy scallop and spicy yellowtail are served in a band of Nori atop rice. Fresh, flavorful, great consistency – right on the money. I also found Sushi Deli on the 79th Street Causeway, whose intimate digs and selection of fresh fish make me remember why I went in there to begin with. This is a place where they take their craft seriously – so don’t go if you’re strapped for time. But if you can chill out, poke around and wait for the hand cut pieces of tuna, yellowtail, salmon…or let the chef get creative for you. But wait – there’s more to come. I want to expand my cravings to Thai, and when I get the yen for curry, it’s Eddie Hill or Thai House II. Being that I am of the “wimpy tongues”, I tend to stay closer to Massaman and Penang curries. Rich, thick, creamy and filled with flavor, any protein works in either dish – or try it with just veggies to really lighten up the meal. I always love Thai soup including Tom Yum – made with Coconut Milk, Keffir lime, lemongrass (which I happen to grow in my garden), mushrooms, and more. Dangerously to me, I could eat gallons. So, what’s the point of this? Well, I am not sure, other than be it Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese – what may seem pedestrian, or foreign, or heavy, or whatever, are some of my greatest pleasures in life. When I think of chef Josh’s house-made peanut and duck sauces, it reminds me that Chinese food is meant to be eaten…often. Shari Lynn Rothstein has been writing about food, wine, lifestyles and fashion for more than 20 years, in New York and Florida. She resides in Aventura. Dramatic rise in NFL injuries should serve as a warning

Jarett Reinhartz ADVANCED FOOTCARE It is no coincidence that the National Football League is experiencing one its highest incidences of significant player injuries in the same year as its abbreviated training camp/preseason. This circumstance should alert athletes at all levels about the importance of preventive care and professional medical attention for developing physical problems. The lockout that kept players out of camp also kept them from receiving the medical attention and physical preparation that generally precedes the stresses of the regular season. As a result, the number of injuries has soared with the most frequent types of damage involving feet, knees and legs. According to media reports, 11 players suffered Achilles tendon injuries in the preseason alone. In the preseason and regular season, a large number of athletes have been sidelined with aggravated hamstrings, torn ACLs, plantar fasciitis, and turf toe, among other disorders of the lower extremities. Some NFL players entered the preseason with injuries that they had already sustained through exercise or in the course of everyday life. Others were hurt during

practice sessions or in training because they overcompensated to make up for lost time resulting from the lockout. Regardless of the reason, these players’ conditions worsened when exposed to the rigors of practice and competition. For some, it meant being sidelined for the rest of the competitive season. Others may be facing the end of their professional sports careers. Athletes at all levels should receive regular medical checkups and should maintain proper physical conditioning before and during their sports seasons. Although it is considered in some corners to be macho to “play through pain,” persistent discomfort should prompt attention by an appropriate medical professional before it escalates. It is virtually impossible to rule out injuries in athletics – particularly in a highcontact sport like football. However, one can minimize the chances of serious conditions and minimize their severity with an ounce of caution. Jarett Reinhartz, C.Ped., is managing partner of Advanced Footcare, Inc. of Miami. He is a licensed pedorthist, and a member of the Pedorthic Footwear Association and is certified by the Board of Certification in Pedorthics. Jarett’s patients have included hundreds of professional and amateur athletes, including players in the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and college teams. Severe stroke cannot keep dancer Tammy Farris down BY RAQUEL GARCIA

Tammy Farris, who had been dancing most of her life, suffered a severe stroke in October 2011 that left the professional dance instructor wheel chair-bound, unemployed, and minus insurance. The South Florida Dance Showcase on Jan. 20 at Broward College is dedicated to help get her and other stroke victims back on their feet. “My mother was told to get my things in order because they did not think I was going to make it,” Farris said. “I was found hours after passing out and immediately rushed to the hospital for surgery. They drained the blood out of my brain and performed a tracheotomy to clear my lungs. I don’t remember my first month in intensive care.” Farris experienced the classic stroke symptoms of numbness on her left side and dizziness prior to passing out and attributes the stroke itself to high blood pressure and stress. In just a few months since the October stroke, she has regained partial use of her left arm and is attempting to learn to walk. Like millions of Americans, Farris did not have insurance at the time of the stroke. She was teaching at Dance Gallery in the South Miami area after giving up her own studio to enable her to teach fulltime. Dance Gallery has sponsored several fundraisers on Farris’ behalf and they sell “Hope You Can Dance” bracelets for her, but more help is needed. “I applied for Medicaid and finally did receive it but they do not cover occupational therapy so I started doing it on my own to continue to improve. I made so many calls to so many organizations but as soon as they found out I was a stroke victim they would say ‘oh, we don’t take stroke victims.’” A branch of Medicaid called Medica offers limited occupational therapy which

“When something tragic and unexpected happens in life you have to fight. I believe you can achieve anything you desire if you work hard enough and believe in yourself.” — Tammy Farris

apparently Farris already has used up and so she continues to make calls to find a way to get help while doing what she can on her own — a risky gamble. “I am living with my mom now and we have modified the house so I can take a shower in the wheelchair but there are so many things you cannot do with only one arm. I can’t cook; I can’t fold laundry. I have fallen four times already and, thank

God, I have not split my head open because one time I landed on my face on the ceramic tile. This is why so many stroke victims end up back in the hospital,” Farris said. A life of immobility to a lifelong dancer brought up in the studio of her mother, Virginia Harris, is not a proposition Farris is willing to accept. “When something tragic and unexpected

happens in life you have to fight. I believe you can achieve anything you desire if you work hard enough and believe in yourself,” Farris said. Apparently this is the style of leadership she taught her nearly 500 students during the course of her career thus far. “Her students love her and want to do more for her,” said Rosemary Baker, Dance Gallery director. “She has been in the dance community a long time and is very well known. She really relates to the students. “Tammy is able to get on their level and explain things in a unique and effective way. If she is teaching ballet, for example, she makes it fun. Ballet is not fun for a lot of students but Tammy could make it fun for everybody.” Many of Farris’ alumni have gone on to dance for the Miami Heat, the Miami Dolphins, and performed on national and international stages such as on the television program So You Think You Can Dance. Some have left travel engagements to come back to town and teach master classes to benefit Farris. Recently a group of students at Dance Gallery decided to post messages about the difference she has made in their lives. “You are my motivation,” Alexis Browning said. “You not only inspired me to dance but also to stay strong and always keep your head up,” Stephanie Pujol said. “You are one of the best teachers I have ever had, not only an inspiration but also a role model,” Casey Ruiz said. The First Annual South Florida Dance Showcase to Benefit Stroke Victims is Friday, Jan. 20, 7 p.m., in the Omni Auditorium at Broward College North Campus, 1000 Coconut Creek Blvd. Call Tammy at 305-323-9041 or send email to <distinctiondance@aol.com> for more information.

‘Dash’ better than crash diets Celine Dion draws a sellout BY BARI AUERBACH Deemed “America’s Best Diet” by US News & World Report, the DASH diet promises to lower blood pressure and cholesterol – without medication through a proven diet, exercise and weight loss program. DASH is an acronym for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The diet, which evolved from National Institutes of Health funded research, is now featured in a new edition of the best-selling book, The DASH Diet Action Plan by Marla Heller, MS RD - a user-friendly guide that makes the DASH diet easy to follow. Heller, who was trained by one of the primary architects of the DASH diet and is herself the leading dietician putting DASH into action for over ten years, shares the secret to making the diet easy and accessible in The Dash Diet Action Plan: Proven to Lower Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Without Medication.. Rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat and nonfat dairy, lean meats, fish, beans, and nuts, the DASH Diet is based on healthful eating principles that can help lower blood pressure; reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer; and support reaching and maintaining a healthy weight. The book as well as an e-book edition outline simple action plans that can accommodate diverse lifestyles and includes: 28 days of meal plans at different calorie ranges; DASH-friendly recipes and shopping lists; tips for eating on-the-run; advice on healthy weight loss and exercise; DASH Diet action plans to help set objectives and develop customized step-by-step strategies; plus DASH Diet adjustments for people with diabetes or metabolic syndrome. According to Dashdiet.org, the DASH Diet has also been named ‘Healthiest Diet’ by US News & World Report…”DASH helps to lower blood pressure by providing more key nutrients, such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium, all of which are associated with lower blood pressure. These key nutrients are boosted by including more fruits, vegetables, and low-fat or nonfat dairy in your daily diet. Some people see additional benefits by lowering

sodium or salt intake. The book also includes additional lifestyle changes to lower blood pressure, such as weight loss, exercise, smoking cessation, and moderation of alcohol intake.” Here are some tips to get started on the DASH Diet: Add a serving of vegetables at lunch and at dinner; add a serving of fruit to meals or as a snack; use low-fat or fat-free condiments; drink low-fat or skim dairy products; limit meat to six ounces a day; instead of typical snacks (chips, etc.), eat unsalted pretzels or nuts, raisins, low-fat and fat-free yogurt; unsalted plain popcorn with no butter, and raw vegetables. Read food labels carefully to choose products that are lower in sodium.

Author Marla Heller is a Registered Dietitian, and holds a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) where she completed doctoral course work in public health, specializing in Behavior Sciences and Health Promotion. Celine Dion holds up a crystal pineapple she received after performing a benefit concert Friday, Dec. 16, in Miami Beach. Celine Dion donated a private concert on Friday, Dec. 16, to a sellout audience to benefit the expansion of Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute in Miami. Dion gave her performance in gratitude to the Institute for the lifesaving procedure carried out on her husband, René Angélil, under the leadership of Dr. Barry Katzen, the Institute’s founder and medical director. Dion gave details in a video presented with her husband at the event. “It started a little over two and a half years ago. We had quite a scare,” she said. “Our family doctors discovered that René had a critical narrowing of the artery to his brain, the carotid artery, putting him at a high risk for stroke.” Angélil said he wasn’t a candidate for surgery so his doctors looked for a less invasive approach. “They had heard about [Dr. Katzen’s] work with non-invasive treatments and they basically told me he was the best person to take care of me,” Angélil said. The audience of 1,700 enjoyed a reception before the 8 p.m. concert at

The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater. The presenting sponsor for the event, Audemars Piguet, official timekeeper of Baptist Hospital, hosted an exclusive dinner after the show. The expansion will include the development of a national Center for Aneurysm Therapy, Center for Advanced Endovascular and Structural Heart Therapy and other specialty centers. The concert raised $6 million, including campaign-related contributions. Event benefactor Victor E. Clarke, an honorary board member of the Baptist Health Foundation, will match all contributions up to $5 million for the capital campaign. “Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute has been ahead of its time for the past 25 years, and this expansion will allow its leadership team to take the Institute to the next level in cardiovascular excellence,” said Brian Keeley, CEO and president of Baptist Health South Florida. The event’s chairs were Armando and Margarita Codina and James and Susan Carr, and co-chairs were Micky and Madeleine Arison. Honorary chairs were Dr. Barry and Judith Katzen.

Local resident advocates for those with epilepsy BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Shortly after moving from Argentina to Miami, Maggie Degrossi was diagnosed with epilepsy. She was only 4 and she suffered from complex partial seizures that caused her to blank out. Her childhood experiences have led her to speak out now to help educate others about living with epilepsy. Growing up with epilepsy was not easy. “My mom treated me a little differently than she treated my brother,” Degrossi said. “He had a lot more freedom.” In high school, she finally confronted her mother about the issue and discovered that the restrictions she lived under were because of her condition. Degrossi said she had two eye surgeries as a child and after each she had a seizure. At first, doctors thought the anesthesia trigged the condition. Initially, her parents were secretive about Degrossi’s condition. “My mom used to say, ‘You don’t have to tell people.’ Maybe she thought people were going to discriminate against me because I had it.” The secrecy led to problems for her as a child. “I used to be sent to the principal’s office. I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said. But the teachers sent her there when she had a seizure, thinking she was misbehaving. She was switched from regular classes to special education classes, which upset her because she had been doing well in school. She began to question things and was eventually put in regular classes. She also stopped keeping her condition a secret. “I started telling everybody I have it, when people ask me,” Degrossi said. “I’m a positive example how you can live a normal life, just like everyone else.” She decided she should keep a positive attitude. “I finally gained freedom with the help of new medication that helped me control my seizures. I got independence,” she said. “I want to show other people with epilepsy that it’s okay to talk about how they feel.” She wants teachers to know how to deal with students who have epilepsy. “They should treat students equally,” she said. “Parents should not be overprotective. My mom was extremely

Maggie Degrossi ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

overprotective.” In college, Maggie wasn’t sleeping enough and had a tonic-clonic seizure that frightened her. It also caused her to lose two years of memory. She vowed to eat healthier and get more sleep. She kept her promise to herself and graduated from Florida International University with a degree in psychology. Along the way, she discovered a great resource, the Epilepsy Foundation of South Florida. “I found out about the Epilepsy of Florida in college,” Degrossi said. “I finally went there. I never knew there were a lot of people who go through what I go through. Once or twice a week, I would go there.” Now, with her degree and the knowledge she gained from the Epilepsy Foundation, she is able to help others. “That’s exactly why I love doing this. I know exactly how they feel,” Degrossi said. “You can live when you have epilepsy. It’s not a disability. I tell them my story and tell them where to go. I tell them it’s okay to have epilepsy; it’s okay to talk about it. I tell people who haven’t found the medication, not to give up, to always maintain a positive attitude.” She and her doctors found the right medication in 2002. She’s now seizure free. Amarylli Fridegotto masters the keys of piano and life BY YARA ZAKHARIA, ESQ.

From concert pianist and piano master teacher to entrepreneur and founder of the new “Family Enrichment and Therapy Center (The Family ETC) on Key Biscayne, island resident Amarylli Fridegotto has mastered the art of hitting the right keys both on her baby grand and in everyday life. Versatility, perseverance, boldness, and zealous determination define this accomplished musician and exuberant businesswoman. After earning a degree in languages at the Sacred Heart high school in Padova, Italy, she graduated with honors in piano from the Venice Music Conservatory “B. Marcello. Fridegotto, who stepped into a piano career at the tender age of 9, later completed several master’s, including one in piano interpretation from “Hochschule fur Musik in Salzburg, Austria; one in the prestigious “Fundazione Cini in San George Island (Venice, Italy), and another in “Applied Music Education in Paris, France. “My mother is an opera singer, and my father was an industrialist who spent each day creating and building, Fridegotto said. Endowed with a talent for the piano, she devoted her life to the study of music and has performed in illustrious venues, such as the Teatro Regio di Parma in Italy and Bulgaria Hall in Sofia, Bulgaria, as well as royal palaces throughout Europe. Adept at “Russian technique in piano interpretation, she collaborated with Russian master and Tchaikovsky Piano Trio pianist K. Boghino in Paris. Driven by a humanitarian dedication to underprivileged children, she also has spearheaded numerous musical programs and participated in several concerts for non-profit foundations such as UNICEF and the European “Red Cross. Fridegotto’s entrepreneurial side

emerged upon the death of her father, who she describes as “a source of constant inspiration and “my role model. Her concerts and teaching curriculum overseas came to a sudden halt when she left Italy to oversee her late father’s manufacturing industries in Venezuela. “It was both a trauma and a challenge, recalled Fridegotto who began her handson business training there. Determined to succeed, she learned the ropes and mastered the entire manufacturing process involved in each of the industries, from raw material to the finished product and human resource management. “I managed the company for three years until two attempted kidnappings and chronic fatigue syndrome forced me to leave Venezuela, Fridegotto said. “A woman who fights for her passions and for her ideals —freedom, respect, and justice — who is uncompromising, and

who, whenever she falls under the blows of life, rises even stronger from the ashes, like a phoenix is how Fridegotto describes herself. In 2006, she and her then-husband settled in Key Biscayne, which she said reminded her of her “beloved Venice. It did not take long for the enterprising and energetic mother of two children, Maximilian and Alexandra, to make her cultural mark on the city by founding two children’s and youth orchestras and the Key Biscayne Piano Academy, which offers piano classes for children and adults from beginners to professionals. In October, Fridegotto launched on Key Biscayne the Family Enrichment and Therapy Center, an establishment offering a panoply of unique cultural activities and events, diverse clinical and alternative therapies, as well as intellectual activities in collaboration

with European Cultural Centers. “An all-in-one center, she notes with pride. Perceived by her peers as incisive, brilliant, passionate and altruistic, Fridegotto explains how she “expanded the concept from one that was child-centric to one also focused on the world around the child or adolescent — namely, his or her family and society. Open to the public, recent socio-cultural mixers at the Family ETC (www.thefamilyetc.com) have included “Venice in History, Architecture and Art featuring guest speakers, as well as works by an international artist, a local photographer, and Venetian pastries with wines. A native of Veneto, a region in Northern Italy where she said “entire families work in the family business, even on Sundays, Fridegotto has hard work and the desire to excel running through her ancestral blood. A sense of gratitude is never far behind, as she thanks God for her two children and the U.S. for welcoming her with open arms. “In this country, if you love what you do and have a devotion to work, you can still make your dreams come true, she said. “I am someone who achieves her goals, or at the very least, always gives 100 percent of herself. Earlier in 2011, the gifted pianist released Essence of Chopin, a compilation of sublime interpretations of the legendary composer’s masterpieces such as Andante Spianato. The CD, which is available online, received critical acclaim from the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada, among others. “It is not the need to go to work every day to support myself and my family financially which gets me out of bed every morning, but the passion for what I do, Fridegotto emphasizes. “The Family ETC is my mission now.
