Hold on to your special Balloons

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING A balloon is a bonus in your life. It was probably given to you, the first time, when you were very young, as a reward or as something to delight you. A balloon brings joy. It is beautiful and fascinating to behold. It gives pleasure. The first lesson you learn about a balloon is that you have to be responsible and hold on to it. If you let go, it will float away never to return to you. Frequently, a child will cry the first time they let go. They will experience some remorse and sadness. Hopefully, they make the mental connection that something beautiful and joyful needs to be appreciated and cherished. Relationships can be like balloons. You have to hold on to them. As much as it hurts you to let go, it also hurts when someone else lets you go. It hurts to be let go of

as a partner, spouse, friend or employee. It hurts when infidelity, divorce, and the loss of a job occurs. It hurts when someone moves away and lets you go. It is painful and disappointing when you move away and those left behind do not hold on to you or your relationship. It is normal to wonder; “Why didn’t they hold on to me?” “How could they let me go out of their life so easily?” I thought I brought them joy just like the balloons. I thought I brought them something unique and special. I thought I was important to them. It is normal to be confused and to grieve. Try to accept it even if you do not understand it. No matter what, do not blame yourself. Do not feel undesirable. Remind yourself that some things are not meant to last forever. If you are fortunate to have many beautiful relationships and balloons in your life make an extra effort to keep them. Tie them down so they don’t get away. Anchor them in your heart. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864.

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center gets to the ‘Heart of the Matter’ Community fair kicks off National Heart Month with fun-filled educational events Valentine’s Day is the celebration of romance, but Aventura Hospital and Medical Center reminds South Florida that the flutter they feel may mean something more serious than love at first sight. Community members of all ages are invited to wear their hearts on their sleeves and enjoy a Heart Healthy Fair on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The full day of events kicks off National Heart Month, a nationally recognized observance of heart health, celebrated every February. Community members will join physicians, nurses, staff and experts at Aventura Hospital for ‘hearty’ activities at booths filled with information on nutrition, heart healthy exercises, fun heart facts, heart attack warning signs and advances in cardiovascular medicine. “We protect our hearts emotionally, but we too often forget to protect them physically,” said Heather Rohan, chief executive officer of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. “Knowledge and proac-

tive screenings are the best offense for the prevention of heart disease, and our team has put together an amazing program to educate the community on all matters of the heart, from hidden dangers and warning signs to the benefits of exercise and nutrition.”

Aventura Hospital’s Heart Healthy Fair will also feature several special events throughout the day, from a heart healthy cooking demonstration with executive chef Alex Mentis, to a panel discussion on new advancements in heart health. Other events scheduled include heart assessments, a

meditation hour and blood pressure, blood sugar and BMI screenings. “Our hearts are the center of the human body, and neglecting its health is a potentially fatal mistake,” said Enrique Hanabergh, MD, chief of cardiology at Aventura Hospital. “With more than one million people suffering from heart attacks in the United States alone, it’s important to teach our families how to practice healthy heart habits at a young age, before serious complications can develop. Knowing your risk coupled with preventative screenings can greatly reduce factors that lead to heart disease.” Aventura Hospital and Medical Center is located at 20900 Biscayne Boulevarrd in Aventura. Parking for the festival is available in the Aventura Hospital and Medical Center garage located directly north of the main hospital entrance.

To RSVP or receive more information on Aventura’s Heart Healthy Fair, call 888256-7692 or visit AventuraHospital.com.

Football Food

Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer

EAT THIS... DRINK THAT Just a few short weeks ago I was sure that my personal football season was coming to an end, and then it happened. The New York Giants beat the Jets…and the Cowboys (yay!)…and then the Falcons…and the Green Bay Packers…and just hours ago, down went the 49ers. Such a pity…NOT! I am and have always been a die-hard Giant fan. They were always my football team. And being in Miami, I’d love to tell you that I feel something different, but quite frankly, I don’t. So, why am I telling you all of this? Well, mostly because it is a hot topic (check out Sport’s Center tomorrow morning), but even better, because more games equals More Game Food! And even thought the next game is the final game of the season, it is the Super Bowl, so when the Giants meet the Patriots, the food is going to have to be unbelieveable! I love fussing and cooking; getting ready for the games… deciding what we will cook as we watch our boys play their hearts out. We’ve been trying to go interesting, tasty – but healthy. Last week, I made French Onion Soup. Now, before you “poo-poo” it and say “No, too complicated…” hear me out. I have a way to make it so that anyone can be a hero. A bag of yellow onions (medium to large size), 2 quarts of beef broth (if you want to cheat go buy the packages. If you want to keep it pure, roast cow bones and boil them in water. Either way, it’ll taste delish. Next steps, stew the onions down on a long, low flame. Dust them with sugar (for caramelizing), salt and pepper (for flavor). Keep mixing, taking care that the onion doesn’t burn and stick on the bottom of the pan. When they are brown and mushy and can practically form a ball, it’s time for the liquid. Beef broth – in! A capful or two of Brandy – in! Not enough – add one more! Ok. Back to the heat. Add to crocks. The float toasted Italian Bread, top with Gruyere cheese, plop into the burner and when it’s golden brown and bubbling, edges oozing over – it is ready. You can’t go wrong with this. If your friends do not like it … well, they’re lying! It’s that good. But seriously, the point is that you can make great food – that is good for you too (Okay, at least not bad for you). There are a few carbs in the croutons and some fats in the cheese, but other than that – the broth has next to no calories, the

onions have none either. Voila! We’ve also made Turkey Burgers, Potato Bars. Here a fun one. Bake up a bunch of potatoes. Red, Idaho, Yukons, white, Sweet…they are all good. Cook at 400 degrees for 35 minutes or until soft. Finish them on a grill for a textured skin. Place sour cream, butter, blue cheese crumbles, steamed broccoli, chili, maple syrup, ketchup, cottage cheese, pulled chicken, bacon crumbles, etc. in little bowl. Everyone gets a spud. Everyone gets a fork, knife and spoon. Everyone designs their own! This is a fun, healthy, and easy way to please. Of course, there are many other ways to “score” – Mexican is always a crowd pleaser (nachos, tacos, burritos…get adventurous – sauté fish. This not only makes it more exotic, but healthier! Tonight we beat the 49ers while eating the most delicious meatball heroes known to man. My husband killed it with these big, flavorful, well-cooked meatballs. What made them so great? First, they were made with love (aw…he really does add a special something something to them). Second, he uses turkey, not beef, so they are leaner and healthier for you without ever losing flavor. He mixes 93-7 turkey with an egg, salt, pepper, garlic, parmesan cheese, and oregano (but you can put in whatever else you’d like!), mixes it, makes little balls and instead of frying them, he puts them in a big roasting pan in and bakes them at 400 degrees for 15 minutes on the first side and then flips them and cooks them for 7 minutes on the other side. They are finished when they’re browned on all sides and cooked through to the center. Then the “sanwich” part begins. We used three kinds of cheese (provolone, mozzarella, and parmesan). We bought fresh Italian bread. We scooped the insides out, and placed the balls in and cheese on top. Broil it briefly, checking it continuously. When the cheese is bubbly and brown, it is ready. And damn, it is good! We have a few more weeks before the season comes to a close. I cherish Sundays at my house. It’s always a big deal. I am sad that the season is coming to an end, but I am so excited that we are one of the last teams standing. So with next week a “buy”, we can formulate a plan to feast during the big game. What will we eat while the Giants play their hearts out? We’ll just have to wait ad see… Shari Lynn Rothstein has been writing about food, wine, lifestyles and fashion for more than 20 years, in New York and Florida. She resides in Aventura. Condos and HOAs can recover their money after bank foreclosure BY MITCH DRIMMER, CAM

MThe real estate meltdown has so confounded everyone in the community association industry that opportunities are being missed and money squandered. MConsider this scenario: At your condo’s board meeting your community association manager is sharing some good news and some bad news. The good news is that after 3 years the bank has finally foreclosed and taken title to a particular unit and since the mortgage was $150,000 the association has recovered $1,500 in assessments (the lesser of 12 months or one percent, frequently referred to as the statutory cap). The bad news is that the unit owed $10,400 including $1,500 in attorney fees. After paying the attorney, the total net recovery for the association was zero, and the shortfall to the association was

$8,900. The treasurer asks “what now?” and the manager responds with “our lawyer says that we have to take a writeoff.” Is this really the end of this receivable? Few ask why there is a write-off, and if they do, they are quickly told that the money is lost forever and becomes another budget entry for the bad debt line item. Time is short and the meeting agenda must continue onward to other pressing matters. Can an association get back any of the money it is owed after a bank forecloses and sails into the “safe harbor” of the statutory cap? The answer is yes, but only if the association knows it can and then makes the effort to collect it. What boards need to know is that when a bank forecloses, takes title and leaves the association with an unpaid debt, the money is still owed to the association and may be recovered. The recovery is not always easy. It may not always

Why and how to pursue association write-offs be fruitful. However, my father always told me that “if you don’t ask, you will never get.” Boards of directors need to ask this simple question: “is there any way that we can go after the former owner and get back the money that is owed to us?” So now that we know that this money can be recovered, how do we go about reclaiming it? Engaging a collection agency is the best option. Most collection agencies will collect debts for a percent-

age of the total amount owed. So if you are collecting zero, any percentage recovered looks pretty good. In Florida there are debt collection agencies that have focused on the community association industry and are actively working to collect community association debt owed on a contingency basis exclusively. If you are a member of a board of directors, it’s time that you considered what is owed, and how you can get it back. If you don’t ask, you won’t get.

RayPrinciotta ON REAL ESTATE In the process of buying and/or selling properties , appraisals are required by law but can create huge stumbling blocks. The more you are aware of possible pitfalls, the more you are able to deal with the current Florida real estate market. The old saying, “It ain’t over til it’s over” has never been more true. You’ve made a deal, Buyer and Seller are happy, and the Buyer’s bank needs an appraisal before moving ahead. Sounds great...well, maybe... but maybe not. Here is an example. You decide to sell your home and you interview 3 real estate agents. They all make good presentations, have nice listing packages and marketing plans, and each one provides you with the all-important Comparative Market Analy-

AVENTURANEWS.COM

Page 13

DEAL KILLERS - PART 2 Overpricing and Flawed Appraisals sis, (CMA.) Agent # 1 says, based on his CMA, the listing price should be $349,000. Agent # 2 says, based on his CMA, you should list at $355,000. Agent # 3 thinks your unit is so much nicer than the competition and says it should be listed at $399,000. Of course you think your home is better than the neighbors, so you decide to go with the higher listing of $399,000. All the stars align and, two days after listing on the MLS a qualified Buyer appears who is being transferred to Miami and needs a home quickly. The offer he makes is gratifyingly near your asking price, you accept, and the buy/sell process begins. You celebrate, thinking it’s really much easier than you thought it would be. The property goes under contract for the asking price of $390,000. The Buyer wants to finance 80%, which seems fine. Then the Buyer’s bank orders an appraisal. For many reasons, none of which are in anyone’s control, local appraisals are currently coming in horribly low, way under value. The appraisal comes in at $335,000 and everyone is screaming.

So how could this happen? It turns out there were no comparable sales in the immediate neighborhood, so according to normal and customary appraisal standards, the Appraiser expanded the search area and found a property that was similar. Unfortunately the expanded area, while adjacent, took in a completely different neighborhood on the other side of the highway where houses historically sold for 20-25% less than where the Seller’s house was located. Thus the $335,000 figure, while completely unfair, met the current guidelines and the Appraiser does not have the authority to change the appraisal. And the bank would not lend more than 80% of the appraised value. Let’s look at math to understand what exactly it is that throws this whole deal off killer:

So the Buyer comes back to the Seller and says, “I don’t have the additional $44,000 to close; plus I’m not going to overpay for the property which the appraiser says is only worth $335,000." Regardless of the facts the appraisal is flawed, and the Buyer’s feeling is valid. Finally, the parties can’t come to terms, the contact is cancelled and now the entire selling process begins again. The moral of this story: for the foreseeable future it appears that appraisals will be coming in low, so take this fact into consideration when pricing your condo to sell. PRICE YOUR PROPERTY RIGHT FOR TODAY’S MARKET.

Chevrolet Camaro marks 45th anniversary with special edition

Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The Chevy Camaro marks its 45th birthday in 2012 and the company has produced an anniversary edition of the popular pony car in the form of a juiced-up convertible. This latest incarnation of the celebrated Camaro — the fifth generation of a car that was introduced in 1967 and billed as a “Mustang eater” — already has established itself as one of America’s most popular cars and, with enhancements for the 2012 model year, that popularity is only going to grow. Camaro is available with either V-8 or V6 power. New for this year is an improved version of the 3.6-liter Direct Injection V-6 engine. It has a new cylinder head design with an integrated exhaust manifold and an improved intake port design with larger intake valves in the cylinder heads. It delivers 323 hp at 6,800 rpm (11 more hp than 2011) and it’s 20.5 pounds lighter for more efficiency and better performance. And while more powerful than the old engine,

the 2012 powerplant delivers an impressive 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Two 6.2-liter V-8 engines are offered for the Camaro SS — the 400 hp L99 is mated to vehicles with an automatic transmission, while the 426 hp LS3 is paired with cars with a manual gearbox. All Camaro models can be equipped with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with TapShift. As in previous years, Camaro is available in three models — LS, LT and SS — and later this year the high-performance Camaro ZL1 will make its debut, which Chevy literature calls “the most technologically advanced car ever developed in its segment.” Also new this year is a FE4 performance suspension package for the SS coupe, and there are several new interior and technology improvements. Interior updates include a revised instrument panel with new instrument graphics and trim and a new steering wheel design. Driver and passenger seats have six-way adjustable settings with power recline front seats standard on LT and SS models. The 45th anniversary Special Edition package is available for the LT and SS models. It includes all the vehicle upgrades for

It comes standard in Carbon Flash Metallic (black), with red and silver rally stripes on the hood and deck-lid, 45th Anniversary graphics on the stripes, special fender badges, new 20-inch wheels in deep silver, RS-style taillight lenses, a rear spoiler, HID headlights, body-color roof molding and a special-trimmed interior.

That is good news for Jose Solar, a 72-year-old client of JCS’ EnhanceFitness program at the Miami Beach Senior Center for the past year. “I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease when I was very young and it affects my hands, legs and balance.” Solar said. “Thanks to the EnhanceFitness exercises, I have gained more balance, strength and flexibility.” And the benefits are not purely physical, as Solar explains, “Before coming to the center I was all alone with no family. Now I feel I have people who care about me and that makes

me feel better, inside and out.” ‘‘We are extremely grateful to Health Foundation of South Florida for enabling JCS to continue offering this vital program to the seniors in our community,” said JCS President and CEO F red Stock. “EnhanceFitness has definitely played a positive role in enhancing quality of life for this important segment of the population.” This is the fourth consecutive year Health Foundation has provided funding to help JCS achieve its goal of improving the fitness and well-being of older adults. The program, which is operated through the agency’s Senior Adult Services Division, encourages seniors to increase their social involvement and take an active role in maintaining healthy aging.

Mount Sinai Medical Center Hosts 10th Annual International Alzheimer’s Symposium BY JOANNA PALMER Medical experts from around the world gathered to discuss the latest breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s disease treatment and diagnosis at the 10th annual Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Symposium hosted by Mount Sinai Medical Center. The annual symposium, held this year on January 14th and 15th at the Miami Beach Resort, provided a forum for new information and indepth discussions about advances in research related to the clinical diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Guests included international neurological experts from Switzerland, Australia, Canada and Netherlands as well as U.S. cities such as Miami, New York, Chicago, Boston, St. Louis, Charlottesville and San Francisco. This year’s event emphasized the early stages of AD and presented results from several longitudinal and cross-sectional studies that explored risk factors, diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Attendees explored how these studies lay the groundwork for making an earlier and even more accurate diagnosis of AD. One of the main topics reviewed were guidelines for diagnosing a pre-dementia condition known as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). “People with MCI are at increased risk for progressing to AD or dementia,” said Dr. Ranjan Duara, Medical Director for the Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders. “It’s just like when we detect high cholesterol in people’s blood and start treating it whether or not patients have any symptoms. The same concept goes for diagnosis and treating MCI in an effort to prevent the disease from escalating. The earliest possible diagnosis can lead to beneficial pharmacological treatment and non-pharmacological interventions for the patient, and that’s what all these medical experts from around the world are here to discuss.” A new addition to this year’s symposium was the Early Alzheimer’s Diagnostic Workshop. The workshop explored how newly developed diagnostic tests, such as MRIs, FDG-PET and amyloidal PET Scans, can be used successfully in the early diagnosis and treatment of AD. Keynote speeches were delivered by four distinguished experts. Dennis Dickson, M.D., professor of Alzheimer’s research from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida spoke about “Atypical Neuropathological

Presentations of Alzheimer’s”. Adriano Aguzzi, M.D., Ph.D, professor and chair of the department of pathology at the University of Zurich in Switzerland addressed “Prionlike Progression of AD”. John Morris, M.D., professor of neurology from Washington University addressed the audience with a lecture on “Early Diagnosis and Progression of AD Using Information from Clinical Evaluation and Biomarkers”. J. Scott Roberts, Ph.D., director of the genomics, health and society program at the University of Michigan, closed out the program with a discussion on “Disclosing Diagnostic and Risk Information: How, When and to Whom?”. Unless ways are found to prevent Alzheimer’s or delay its onset, it is projected that 13 million people in the U.S. will have Alzheimer’s disease by 2050. Since the development of criteria for AD twentyfive years ago, major advances in our understanding of the biology and early clinical features of AD have led to improvement in clinical assessments which have enabled clinicians to diagnose an earlier stage of the illness, mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s disease and Memory Disorders along with Dr. Duara will continue to host this annual symposium so physicians from all over the world will have a forum to present research and discuss ideas that can provide a greater understanding of the clinical diagnosis, progression and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. About Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders Founded in 1986, The Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders was the first center in Florida to become an Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC). The Wien Center seeks an end to Alzheimer’s disease and similar disorders through research, diagnosis, education and treatment and is actively conducting more than 21 research studies and clinical trials about Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders. The Wien Center has garnered prestigious recognition by consistently being ranked a medical specialty leader in U.S.News & World Report’s list of America’s Best Hospitals. The Wien Center’s medical specialists have treated more than 5,000 memory disorder patients with a multi-faceted approach, utilizing expertise in diagnostic imaging, psychiatry, neurology genetics and geriatrics.

Fox News & New York Times reporters to make appearance at local Synagogue for next chapter of Jewish Book Series The Meet the Author Jewish Book Series presented by the Rabbi Norman Mussman Cultural Arts Department of the Michael-Ann Russell JCC/Sanford L. Ziff Campus, North Miami Beach, and sponsored by Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus, will continue its next chapter with “This Burning Land. Lessons from the Front Lines of the Transformed Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.” Greg Myre and Jennifer Griffin, husband and wife journalists arrived in Jerusalem in 1999 and began a family there, just as the Palestinian uprising erupted. They found themselves raising two young daughters while covering the worst fighting ever between Israelis and Palestinians. Greg Myre, a New York Times reporter, and his wife, Jennifer Griffin, a Fox News correspondent, will bring riveting accounts of how the conflict has changed over the past decade, with the pivotal events that took place, and thinking that motivates some Palestinians to be suicide bombers, and others to work as informants for Israel’s security forces. The couple will present their book at the MAR-JCC’s “Meet the Author Jewish Book Series” on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Torah Benny Rock Campus, located at 20350 Northeast 26th Avenue, Miami. They will address a fundamental paradox, that Israel is stronger than ever, has a vibrant society, a thriving economy and powerful military, yet it cannot find a way to end the feud with the

R&R prepares moms for stressful lives As every mother knows, raising children is a stressful experience. But for mothers of seriously ill youngsters, the unrelenting pressure of caring for a sick child seven days a week saps a woman’s emotional, social and physical energy. Yesterday, Chai Lifeline Southeast gave 19 mothers a respite from their hectic, stressful lives at the first of four planned Seasons of Respite workshops co-sponsored with the Jewish Women’s Foundation of Broward County. Seasons of Respite is designed to strengthen mothers of seriously ill children by encouraging them to take care of themselves in order to become better caregivers to their families. The workshops, which focus on mind, body, spirit, and community, offer mothers a chance to renew and refocus mental and physical energies. Esther Fettman, director of special projects for Chai Lifeline Southeast explained, “Mothers of very sick children often neglect themselves. They are so busy taking care of everyone in their families that they don’t take time for themselves. This program gives them permission to indulge in self-pampering.” The Spa Day program, held at the home of Gita Galbut and hosted along with Helene Berkowitz, gave the mothers and grandmothers the precious gift of time. Freed from their normal routines, the women had the opportunity to enjoy a manicure, indulge in a Reiki treatment, and participate in a fun Zumba class. Each moth-

er was treated to a makeover and manicure by professional stylists. “Our goal was to raise the spirits of our moms and their moms and give them a serene day,” added Ellen Weiss, director of Chai Lifeline Southeast. “We hope that today’s activity encourages them to make time for themselves by showing them that being good to oneself correlates with the ability to be an effective parent.” All stylists and instructors donated their time and expertise. “It felt so good giving back. We had the best time,” admitted one as she watched the mothers visibly relax as the day went on. “Thanks so much for this special day,” said one mother as she collected her gifts and treats before heading home. “I haven’t taken time off for myself since my daughter was diagnosed. Today made me realize how important it is for me to remain healthy and strong.”

‘Train – or complain’ BY BARI AUERBACH Around this time of year, anyone who made a resolution to get in better shape is either psyched up to keep training – or still just complaining about weight plateaus or stubborn trouble spots. The good news is, it’s never too late to start attaining fitness goals or maintaining a fit physique with exercises that can be performed at a gym or in the comfort of your own home.

Page 25

Better Butt: Olympic swimming champion Dara Torres highly recommends this elevating butt exercise: Prop a small stability ball up against a wall. Lie on your back facing the ball with your butt against it, arms at sides, feet on ball, knees apart. Lift your butt, hold for a beat as your bring knees together and then lower to start. Toned Arms: Armed with light weights or even water bottles, you can do these arm and shoulder “Push, Pull, Kickback” sculpting moves recommended by celebrity trainer Kacy Duke. Assume a squat position with legs bent about 45 degrees. Hold a light dumbbell in each hand, arms bent so the weights are positioned in front of the chest, palms facing each other. Extend arms straight out, pushing weights forward. Then bend elbows, squeeze shoulder blades together, and pull weights back to either side of chest. Finally straighten arms out behind you. Great Legs: To tone and firm legs, bodyweight squats are multi-tasking exercise since they also recruit glutes, hamstrings, abdominals and lower-back. To perform a bodyweight squat, stand with feet a little more than shoulder width apart, toes pointed 30 degrees out. Squat down pushing your butt out behind you, until you reach the desired depth. Push through your heels and then extend your legs until your knees are straight again. For an added challenge, you can perform squats holding dumbbells in each hand or weighted bar behind your neck. Flat Abs: For “abs-solutely” amazing abdominals, try these movements on a stability ball: While lying on the ball, crunch up holding a dumbbell in one hand. Then

switch dumbbell to other hand and repeat (instead of the dumbbell, you can also crunch up while holding a small medicine ball with both hands). Motivation/Inspiration: Two health and fitness related events coming to Aventura could help you reach your goals before it’s time to make another New Year’s resolution! Aventura Mall will host the Health & Lifestyle Expo, Saturday, Jan. 28 from noon-8 p.m. This event will be a unique gathering of a select number of doctors, healthcare providers and businesses sharing the goal to improve the lifestyle of people in South Florida. The news anchor team of WPLG Local 10 will also be at the event to greet shoppers. On Sunday, Jan. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Aventura Community Recreation Center is holding a Fitness and Wellness Fair promoting fitness and healthy lifestyle activities. The event will feature a live DJ, healthy lifestyle classes and demonstrations, plus fitness assessments with blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose screenings by Mt Sinai Medical Center. Local businesses will also be on hand with refreshments. A free six month Community Recreation Center individual membership will be given to a lucky winner, who must be present at the drawing. Seraphic Fire is nominated for two Grammy awards — Best Choral Performance (Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem) and Best Small Ensemble Performance (A Seraphic Fire Christmas). Seraphic Fire is the only chorus in North and South America to be nominated for a Grammy this year. As the 2012 awards conflict with Seraphic Fire’s performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s B minor Mass, Quigley has invited Scott Allen Jarrett, a nationally recognized Bach interpreter, to conduct Seraphic Fire’s performances on Feb. 11 and 12. Quigley will conduct the opening night of the series on Feb. 10. The local performance will be on Saturday, Feb. 11, 8 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 536 Coral Way in Coral Gables. “If there’s anyone who I’d want to hear the B minor Mass conducted by, it would be Scott Allen Jarrett,” Quigley said. “I’ve worked with Scott numerous times, and his sensitivity and attention to detail in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach is unrivaled.”

Jarrett — along with Quigley, Bass and Seraphic Fire — also is up for a Grammy award this year for his performance as one of the two pianists on Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem. “Because of the time difference, the concert and the Classical Grammys actually occur simultaneously on Sunday,” Jarrett said. “Since a number of us performing on that Sunday are up for the award, we’re going to all have to make a pact to keep our cell phones off during the intermission.” Jarrett holds a number of prestigious positions in the music world, including music director and conductor of the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte, director of music at Marsh Chapel at Boston University, artistic director of the Back Bay Chorale in Boston, and associate director of choral activities of Boston University. Jarrett also is on the music staff of the Oregon Bach Festival. Miami-based Seraphic Fire, now in its 10th season, boasts an international roster of singers, all chosen for their exceptional talent. Seraphic Fire flies these renowned artists to Miami for intensive rehearsals followed by a series of performances at various South Florida locations. Seraphic Fire will be joined by its sister ensemble, the Firebird Chamber Orchestra, for a performance of Bach’s B minor Mass. Tickets and information are available at 1888-544-FIRE or SeraphicFire.org.

Local diva Caballero returns to sing in FGO’s La Rondine BY ALEJANDRA SERNA

Cuban-born and Miami-raised diva Elizabeth Caballero is back in South Florida to perform with her home company, Florida Grand Opera (FGO). The lyric soprano is singing the lead role of Magda in the rarely produced Puccini opera La Rondine, which opened on Jan. 21 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. Caballero got her start in opera while working in the Florida Grand Opera box office. Deciding to pursue a career in voice, she auditioned for the company’s chorus and then the FGO Young Artist Studio, one of the most coveted programs of its kind in the country. Since then, she has sung prominent roles with FGO, such as the lead in La Bohème in 2008 and a critically acclaimed Liu in Turandot in 2010, becoming a local favorite in South Florida’s classical music scene. “I think what has made me a “favorite” is that Miami audiences have seen me grow into the artist I am today,” Caballero said. “They have been with me from my college years, through my time as a Young Artist, and so on. I am a true product of the great city of Miami.” Although proud and grateful for the support she has at home, Caballero’s accolades don’t stop here. She has shared her talents with audiences throughout the country and abroad. In fact, it was after performing La Rondine for her European debut in Trieste, Italy, that she became infatuated with this opera and campaigned for it at FGO. “I just had to see it in Miami because I fell in love with this opera,” she said. La Rondine, which means “the swallow,” is the story of a kept woman who leaves a luxurious life with her protector in

search of true love. However, a prediction made in the first act heralds that, like a bird returning to the nest, she will go back to the life she knows. La Rondine is sung in Italian with projected translations in English and Spanish. It continues at the Arsht Center through Feb. 4. Tickets start as low as $11 and can be purchased online at <www.FGO.org> or by phone 1-800-741-1010 at the FGO Box Office.

Artist Huong’s mural makes statement about immigration

Artist Huong is pictured with a segment of the Immigration Wall of Borders peace mural. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– BY RAQUEL GARCIA

The contentious immigration debate today evokes sharp memories in the mind of local artist Huong. In 1975, a 25-year-old Huong escaped her native Vietnam and managed to make it to Subic Bay in the Phillippines where the American Naval Base and promise of freedom harkened. Immigration Wall of Borders is a more than eight-foot tall and 200-foot-long peace mural designed by Huong and aimed at continuing dialogue on immigration-related issues. “Immigration has been debated in the United States since the country was founded,” Huong said. “We keep kicking the can down the road and have been doing that for so long. It is immoral and inhumane to discount the value of immigrants and I wanted to bring the issue forward as an artist to stir constructive discussion.” The mural is an interactive project whereby panels of quotes from famous thinkers on immigration are presented along with stark imagery of abstract forms representing naked humanity. There are open spaces in between the sepia toned quotes and art where viewers are encouraged to pick up a silver metallic marker and add their own remarks. “We are all immigrants. How can anyone say what an American looks like? We are black, white, everything; our population is from all over the world. Everything I do is a very personal reflection about exile and the futility of all wars,” Huong said. Huong is a self-taught artist with more than 100 solo exhibits presented throughout Canada and the United States in her 30-year professional career. Huong’s work has been shown in museums, galleries, outdoor exhibits and in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol Building in

Washington, DC. “The Peace Mural,” representing over 2,000 works, was created as a protest to the Iraqi War in 2003. “Fragments of War” was 25 years in the making and completed in 2000 as a cathartic process to help Huong make peace with the tragedies of her war-torn past. “When we came to this country as refugees we had nothing. No clothes, no family, no identity, no country, nothing — only the naked truth. We, like all immigrants throughout history, carried with us just flesh and bone as we started over at the absolute bottom of society.” Huong hopes the immigration mural will encourage more people to speak out about peaceful principles and be an encouragement for young people to stay engaged in pressing social issues. She plans to travel with the exhibit after locating an appropriate venue for its display in Miami. The idea is to take it on the road for several years and present the work of art in the southern border states of California, Arizona, Texas and Alabama where the immigration issue is hotly debated — and beyond. The Peace Mural Foundation is an all-volunteer organization sponsoring Immigration Wall of Borders with a mission to promote civic education and action for peace and justice through the arts. “By fate or chance on that day in 1975 I was destined to begin the journey that would forever change my life. In Vietnam I was a child of war; today I am a woman of peace. My art is my story, my art-biography and in a way that is unique to each viewer, the story of us all.” To find out more about Huong and the Peace Mural Foundation call 305-915-1018, send email to <immigrationmural@gmail.com> or visit peacemural.org. Her work also can be seen on YouTube.
