Turnberry Isle Miami lights up the holidays with young ‘super star’ singers
H
oliday time is like no other at the elegant Turnberry Isle Miami as guests, members and the general public saw recently when a quartet of amazing young singers from American Heritage Senior High School performed. Group leader, 17 year-old Josh Grosso, was one of the AT&T YOUNG STARS SHOWCASE singers last year, a program produced by the Aventura Marketing Council that featured 11 spectacular young singers at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. A giant gingerbread house was on display... highlighting the beginning of a partnership with Turnberry Isle Miami and the Holtz Miami Children’s Hospital. Turnberry Isle’s Executive Pastry Chef Danny Malone and other team members visited the hospital recently and had the pleasure of working with 50 children, as they decorated gingerbread cookies. These cookies were then
incorporated into the final creation... a huge gingerbread house complete with furniture inside. The quartet, all 17 year-olds, consisted of Josh Grosso, Cassie Zepeda, Chandler Lovelle and Robbie Pomeroy, who truly kept the holiday bright as they sang for two hours, mesmerizing the audience with their voices, stage presence and professionalism while singing in English, Spanish and Italian. From traditional Christmas and Hanukkah songs to “The Prayer,” there was no doubt these youngsters were going to make a mark in the world of entertainment down the road. “We were so proud to invite our guests, members and the public to this event,” noted Douglas Hustad, Managing Director of Turnberry Isle Miami, “and we are looking forward to expanding this program next year.”

Around Town in Aventura Aventura Marketing Council’s Student Connection tours Sun Life Stadium Almost 100 at-risk students from the Aventura Marketing Council’s (AMC) Dade Partner schools recently had the opportunity to tour Sun Life Stadium thanks to Reginald Sperling from the stadium. They enjoyed a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at the Club Level, Press Box, Scoreboard, Owner’s Suite, LIV Nightclub, the tunnel, the Marlins’ dugout and the Dolphins locker rooms. The Student Connection is a program of the Education Committee of the AMC, and was created over 20 years ago to answer the need to provide programming for students ‘at risk’ of dropping out of school. Today, the AMC’s ten Dade Partner schools are invited to participate in this program as well as other programs that help build the relationship between the business and educational communities. Aventura Hospital and Medical Center alleviates Parkinson’s Tremors with leading edge surgical therapy

For many patients with Parkinson’s Disease and essential tremors, simple motor skills can seem insurmountable, but new therapies provide much-needed relief from these physical impediments. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical therapy involving the implantation of a pacemaker in the brain, which sends electrical impulses to specific areas responsible for loss of motor control. DBS is made of three components: an implanted generator, lead and an extension. The implanted generator is placed under the skin near the clavicle, while the extensions connect the power to the leads in the brain. The therapy has provided remarkable outcomes for patients with symptoms that are not managed with other, traditional therapies like medication. Unlike other surgical therapies, DBS is reversible. “DBS is a revolutionary surgical treatment for patients suffering from debilitating tremors associated with Parkinson’s Disease and Essential Tremors,” said Santiago Figuereo, M.D., neurological
surgeon at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. “When medication is not enough for advanced symptoms, or their adverse effects counteract their benefits, DBS not only provides relief but improves quality of life far beyond imagination. Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING A new year encourages many people to make resolutions. It provides an opportunity for them to change, improve and enhance their life. Here is a suggestion for you and your life. Resolve that you will not just survive. You will actually thrive. There is a quote that says, “All of the animals, except man, know that the principal business of life is to enjoy it.” Your life will go by regardless of how you live it. It can be difficult or delightful. Find your own special and unique ways to thrive and enjoy it. Clear up those inner conflicts that have been nagging you. Once you solve them you will be free to live with serenity, peace and joy. Life should not be an endurance test. Make a list of the things that will ignite your delight in living. Simple things and
obvious things can still have a powerful effect; Watch a sunrise or sunset, spend time with those you enjoy, spend time doing things you enjoy. You can also do something grand. You have to get to really know yourself before you can know what will really delight you. If you are not sure, then experiment. You can try things that you never tried before and you can try things that you might not think you will enjoy. You have to do at least one thing a day for your resolution to be truly effective. They say that you need 12 laughs a day to stay healthy. How are you going to do that? Think about the things that you can do to support your new resolution. Take some control. Make a plan to serve as a guideline for the positive changes you wish to make. The rest of your life can be the best of your life. Make your life not just good but great. Geriatric Fracture Program established at Memorial Regional Hospital South
Nearly one in four patients who suffer a hip fracture will die within a year. One in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will experience a fracture. More than 35,000 deaths occur annually from complications resulting from hip fractures. It’s statistics like these that compelled Memorial Regional Hospital South, in Hollywood, to establish a Geriatric Fracture Program, designed to improve the care of the fragile, elderly fracture patient. “Our focus is on ensuring that surgery is performed within 24 hours after the patients’ arrival to our emergency department,” explained Leslie Pollart, director of Nursing, Memorial Regional Hospital South. “Research shows that faster surgical intervention in the geriatric population results in better patient outcomes and shorter lengths of stay.” More than 50 percent of hip fractures in patients over 65 years old result in significant loss of independence and compromise overall quality of life. Pollart pointed out that with people living longer, osteoporosis and osteoporosis fractures is quickly becoming a public healthcare crisis. If surgery is necessary, the program’s team takes over, preparing patients for their operation within 24 hours and scheduling the procedure with a highly-skilled orthopedic surgeon. Specialized geriatric post-surgical care in the Acute Care for the Elderly (A.C.E.) unit helps ensure that patients get everything they need to regain as much independence as possible, according to Pollart. “A multidisciplinary team geared to seniors, including geriatricians, nurses, pain management specialists and social workers, join forces to keep patients as comfortable as possible as they heal,” she said. By helping patients resume physical activity as soon as possible, the Geriatric Fracture Program minimizes the likelihood of complications such as blood clots. As a result, physical therapy usually begins as soon as the day after surgery. Occupational therapy is available as well, if needed. FDR, Eleanor and Lucy
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Eleanor Roosevelt grew up painfully shy with insecurities partially based upon her feeling that she was unattractive. At a Christmas party in 1898, Eleanor’s dreams came true. Tall and handsome Cousin Franklin chose Eleanor to dance with over the many beauties in the room. When questioned by his domineering mother Sara as to why he had selected Eleanor, Franklin said that he admired her “very good mind.” With their subsequent marriage, Eleanor defined herself solely in terms of Franklin’s needs. Sara oversaw everything the young couple did, while controlling Franklin’s purse strings. In 1913, Eleanor, now a housewife with five children, in need of assistance with her busy schedule, hired Lucy Mercer, an efficient, attractive, twenty one year old social secretary. Eleanor’s life took a shattering turn in September, 1918, while her husband was Assistant Secretary of the Navy during World War I. Eleanor, while unpacking
Franklin’s suitcase, discovered a packet of love letters from Lucy to Franklin. Eleanor admitted, “The bottom dropped out of my world.” Eleanor told Franklin that she would give him a divorce so that he could marry Lucy. Sara advised that she could not stop Franklin, however, she would disinherit him if he left his marriage for another woman, insisting it would bring scandal upon the Roosevelt name. She further advised that she would not give him another penny and he could no longer expect to inherit the family estate at Hyde Park. The marriage resumed, however, it was to be defined on Eleanor’s terms. She was no longer to be subjugated to Franklin. They had separate bedrooms. Franklin promised never to see Lucy again. Eleanor gradually gained confidence; she was now free to seek her own fulfillment. Franklin, while President, used Eleanor as his personal representative in national and international matters. A Gallop poll in March, 1945, as to their respective activities, rated Eleanor higher than Franklin. On April 12, 1945, First Lady Eleanor received a phone call to rush to Warm Springs, Georgia, where Franklin was dying from a cerebral hemorrhage. The Secret Service escorted Lucy from the premises before Eleanor arrived.

FPL strengthens electrical infrastructure serving North Miami and North Miami Beach
Florida Power & Light Company is continuing its infrastructure-strengthening initiatives in the cities of North Miami and North Miami Beach and is on track to complete key improvements as part of its long-term reliability and storm preparedness plan. FPL has inspected approximately 1,010 utility poles, upgraded the main power line serving the City of North Miami Emergency Operations Center, cleared vegetation from approximately 70 miles of power lines and used advanced infrared technology to examine three main power lines in and near North Miami. In North Miami Beach, FPL will have upgraded the main power line serving the City of North Miami Beach Emergency Operations Center, inspected approximately 1,580 utility poles, cleared vegetation from approximately 35 miles of power lines and used advanced infrared technology to examine two main power lines. “We’re committed to delivering exceptional reliability while continuing to provide our customers with the lowest typical bill in the state,” said Aletha Player, FPL Area Manager, External Affairs. With each of her new lovers, Carmen leads José one step closer to utter marginalization and delinquency, including his vain attempts for vindication before falling to murderous rampage and darkness. Ultimately, his helpless love drives his hand to the naked knife for the last time. Members of the South Florida community are invited to join the fight against hunger and attend Feeding South Florida’s (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank) “Come Together” evening event on Jan. 12, 2012. 7-10 p.m., at The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, 591 NW 27 St. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Feeding South Florida is hosting the soiree that will feature food, spirits, incredible artwork, live entertainment, some of South Florida’s top chefs, and more. Proceeds/sponsorships will benefit Feeding South Florida, a notfor-profit organization that feeds South Florida’s hungry in order to improve their lives. Individuals and corporations are Feeding South Florida’s main sources of financial support. For every dollar donated, seven lifesaving pounds of food and grocery items are provided. JCS’ Masada Home Care helps Regina Friedman stay positive WHEN YOU’RE SMILING Greeting a visitor at the door of her sparkling Sunny Isles Beach apartment, Regina Friedman is the epitome of the gracious hostess. A warm welcome is followed by an introduction to Denise Pierre, her part-time companion from Masada Home Care, an independent agency affiliated with Jewish Community Services (JCS). As Regina talks about the difference JCS’ programs – Masada Home Care, JCS Clean Sweep and Holocaust Survivor Support Services — have made in her life, it’s obvious this is a uniquely positive person. Bubbly and energetic, she peppers her conversation with phrases like “It’s not enough to be blessed. You have to know you are blessed.” BEHIND THE SMILE But as you delve deeper into Regina’s life story, a harsh picture of unimaginable suffering emerges, albeit reluctantly. She doesn’t like to talk about the past. Born in Poland 86 years ago, Regina was just 14 when she, her parents and two sisters were split up and sent to the concen-

tration camps. Regina and her younger sister went to Auschwitz, which they miraculously survived. The rest of her family perished under the Nazis. After being liberated in 1945, Regina went to a displaced persons camp in Germany where she met her future hus-
band, Manuel, also a Polish survivor of the Holocaust. They married in 1946 and emigrated to New York City in 1950. JCS STEPS IN TO HELP Settling in the Bronx, Regina and Manuel found low-paying jobs. In 1998,
following a lifetime of hard work and after watching their two children graduate from college and launch professional careers, Regina and her husband retired and moved to Sunny Isles Beach. Nine years ago, as her husband’s health began to fail and she became frail, Regina realized she needed assistance and heard about JCS. “I called and they sent me Denise, who has been with me ever since,” Regina says. Denise cared lovingly for Manuel until he passed away in 2006 and does a little bit of everything for Regina. “The help I get from JCS is life saving,” Regina says as she pats Denise’s hand. It’s obvious these two women have a very close relationship. Just as it’s obvious that Regina’s faith has helped her overcome tragedies that could have destroyed a less spirited person. “I consider myself lucky,” Regina says. “HaShem is always there to help me.”

The new Scion iQ is the latest vehicle to join the growing list of micro-subcompacts that many auto manufacturers are offering American consumers. Measuring just 10 feet in length and with the capability of seating four people, Scion is billing the iQ as the world’s smallest fourseat vehicle. The iQ is a three-door hatchback with a geometric shape and it should give the Smart Car a run for its money. It has a strong, high beltline that runs from the large headlights, up the A-pillar and across the roof to wrap around the rear. Side mirrors with integrated turn signals accent the geometric design. The iQ is billed as a premium micro-subcompact and it is intelligently designed, with six engineering innovations basically responsible for its ability to be small in size, but large in capability. They are: • A compact front-mounted differential; • A high-mount steering rack with electronic power-steering;
• A compact air-conditioning unit; • A flat gas tank housed beneath the floor; • Slim-back front seats that optimize rear legroom, and • A 3+1 offset seating arrangement that allows one adult to sit behind the front passenger and a child or small package behind the driver. The iQ has a 78.7-inch wheelbase and a unique suspension design of MacPherson struts up front and a compact torsion beam in the rear. The combination allows the little car to maneuver through city traffic much easier than a larger vehicle. The overall length of just 120.1-inches and short front and rear overhangs allows the iQ to slip into virtually any urban parking space. At the same time, the iQ has a wide track of 66.1 inches for solid handling, much like a larger sports car. The 2012 iQ is powered by a 1.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 94 hp and 89 pounds-feet of torque. It also has the latest dual VVT-i, allowing the engine to operate efficiently and deliver a broader powerband, yet requiring less fuel and generating fewer emissions. The engine is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for smooth acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency of 37 mpg. The iQ comes standard with safety features that consumers expect and demand. It has 11

Just ask personal trainer Lynn Roden what she finds most rewarding about her commitment to fitness and although achieving top placements in the most challenging endurance competitions could top the list – she’ll sincerely answer: “I find it most rewarding to help people realize ‘It’s never too late to be what you might have been!’ – especially if you’re ready to keep a fitness-oriented resolution!” Looking at Lynn it’s hard to tell she wasn’t always in such optimal shape – so fit she’s now able to excel in marathons, triathlons and obstacle course races. “Having had a desk job for many years, one day I realized I wasn’t in the physical shape I wanted to be in,” she explains. “I worked hard to make the time to come to the gym and hired a personal trainer...I’ll never forget the first time I climbed a flight of stairs and wasn’t winded. Medicine Parkinson’s Program by coordinating fitness benefits at Olympia Gym. “Roy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s shortly after we married,” Lynn said. “Watching his resolve with his own battle has also given me additional motivation.” Lynn always encourages her clients to “try something new” and many have started participating in biking tours and obstacle-type competitions. “I’m living proof that anything can be accomplished with the right training and attitude,” she says. Lynn is now inviting fitness enthusiasts to join in the Feb. 25 eight-mile obstacle course Spartan Race. “Last year, I took clients with me and some weren’t in prime condition,” she recalls. “But everyone crossed the finish line. It was a powerful experience and one I’m very proud to have been able to share. “Most people come in looking to become stronger physically - but leave being stronger mentally as well. Miami Marine Stadium to be reborn hundreds of boats-would surround the stage to create one of the most unique entertaintment environments to be found anywhere. Performers at the Marine Stadium included The Who, Ray Charles, Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, Jimmy Buffett, and many more. The Stadium was shuttered after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 (it was never damaged) and has set vacant ever since.

Once destined for the wrecking ball, the legendary Miami Marine Stadium is now on a path to restoration. Visitors and residents alike may have access to what may be the greatest outdoor entertainment venue in tn the United States. Friends of Miami Marine Stadium (www.marinestadium.org), a not for profit organization will be presenting shortly to the City of Miami a plan to restore the Stadium.
THE PAST The Miami Marine Stadiumis a 6,500 seat grandstand, was built in 1963 and located on Virginia Key. It is an iconic Landmark which sits is part of the Marine Stadium Basin which was designed for boat racing and dredged out at when the Stadium was built. The stadium was designed by architect Hilario Candela, a young, 28 year old, Cuban architect, educated at Georgia Tech. The initial cost of the Stadium and Basin, was $2 million. When it was built, the origami like folded plate roof was the largest span of cantilevered concrete in the world. During its years of operation (1963-1992), the Stadium hosted many events such as powerboat races, symphony and rock con-
certs, Easter services, presidential appearances, talk shows and countless numbers of community events. Performers would play on a floating stage anchored just a few feet from the Marine Stadium. Dozens—sometimes
THE PRESENT In 2008, The Friends of Miami Marine Stadium was organized to actively promote retention and restoration of this remarkable building. Since that time, much progress has been made. In October of 2008, the Miami Marine Stadium was designated historic by the City’s Historic Preservation Board. The City’s Master Plan for Virginia Key, approved in July of 2010 makes the Marine Stadium one of the key components of the
plan. The Stadium is also a key priority for Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado. Meanwhile, the Stadium has generated significant national interest. The Marine Stadium was named to the National Trust For Historic Preservation’s “11 Most Endangered List” (2009) and the World Monuments Fund Watch List (2010). Jimmy Buffett cut a video endorsement and the Miami Herald has written six editorials in support of restoration.
THE FUTURE Given the challenging economic situation for government, Friends of Miami Marine Stadium is committed to restore and operate the Stadium without any funding from the City of Miami. The estimated $30 million restora-

tion cost will be funded through the sale of Historic Tax credits, $3 million from a Historic Preservation Bond fund of Miami Dade County, and a capital campaign. Plans are now being prepared to present to the City of Miami. The Miami Marine Stadium will be a tremendous asset to Miami-a wonderful amenity for residents and an economic generator capable of hosting one of a kind events and spectacles. the Jewish prayer of mourning. This prayer, exalting the name of God, is recited in the presence of a congregation daily for eleven months. MMiller, who grew up Orthodox with Yiddish as his first language said, “The Kaddish provided me with time to grieve and reflect on spiritual aspects of life and death, and because of this I felt compelled to create images that captured my response to what I was experiencing.” MThe artist’s grief provided the inspiration for a vivid, moving and cathartic account of his experience of honoring his father through the daily recitation of the Kaddish. As an historic record and for personal reasons, Miller created a watercolor of each the synagogues he visited during the 333 days of saying Kaddish in New York, Vermont, Ohio and Florida (including Congregation Beth Jacob that is now JMOF). The 50 vibrant watercolors, considered by the artist to be a coherent unit, are painted on paper. As a whole, the
collection suggests the diversity of the social and religious settings that Miller frequented, as well as the breadth of personal transformation and learning he experienced over the course of those eleven months. Though the form varies, humanity’s expression of mourning transcends time, society, and culture. The extraordinary body of work that ensued is an intimate document of Miller’s faith, observance and the Jewish community. The ultimate unity of the Jewish people is found in these remarkable works. Each image is distinct in its orientation, composition and focus. Depictions range from exterior to interior, from human to architectural portraits, from limited to wide-ranging color schemes. The richness of his color and line inscribes the vitality of faith and continuance of ritual and tradition. The exhibition also includes a stunning portrait of Miller’s father, against a silver leaf background, an image of iconic and descriptive power that sets the tone for the show. Accompanying the images are the artist’s commentaries, based on his thoughts, feelings and experiences with those he met during this pursuit. While honoring the

father and their shared heritage. Though the daily ritual of saying Kaddish has formally ended for Miller, bringing this project to fruition provides an opportunity for those within the Jewish community, and for those in other communities, of all ages, to witness and honor the tradition of the Mourner’s Kaddish, and to reflect on their own humanity and spiritual journeys. The exhibit will be on display through May 13, 2012.
ABOUT THE ARTIST Max Miller is known for his abstract paintings that embrace color and line, as well as his figurative paintings of human and animal subjects. He has had exhibitions in New York City and throughout the East Coast. He received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from Yale University. He has been awarded numerous fellowships, including a New York Foundation for the Arts, Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Arts and two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants.

Resolve to Move Forward - Your Decisions Will Give You (and yours) Peace of Mind BY HELEN SHAHAM Q. My husband and I have lived in our home for over 45 years. We’re both in our mid-80s and have been discussing the option of moving to a senior living community for the last several months. It’s been years since we’ve made such a significant life change. How do we know when the time is right to move? A. Older adults who have lived in their homes for decades are especially hesitant to move to a senior living community as even the thought of a change, and of being in a new environment, seems overwhelming and to some even terrifying.
