M

ercantil Commercebank hosted an Aventura Marketing Council Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon featuring nationally-acclaimed economist, J. Antonio Villamil, who shared success strategies for “growing your South Florida business in the ‘new normal’ economy.” AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman joined by Andrew Waxman, Mercantil Commercebank Aventura Banking Center manager, welcomed business and community leaders to Christine Lee’s at Gulfstream Park. “The drive to take you further” event highlighted the bank’s mission to offer business products that can help businesses succeed. The Aventura Banking Center now offers extremely competitive rates on versatile loans and lines of credit as well as

a full array of services including retail, commercial, domestic and international banking products designed to meet the community’s financial needs. “Small businesses in South Florida need access to credit to grow and prosper,” Waxman said. “In recent years, many banks curtailed lending. At Mercantil Commercebank we’ve always looked at businesses on a case-by-case basis, and are eager to provide credit to small businesses looking to expand their reach. We’re not only lending, our rates are as competitive as can be found.” Mercantil Commercebank has been serving the tri-county area for over 30 years and is one of the most well respected financial institutions in South Florida, while Professor Villamil has over 30 years of experience as a business economist, university educator and high-level federal and state policymaker, so his advice is invaluable. He is currently Dean of the School of Business at St. Thomas University, a member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations in Washington DC; and has served as a Presidential appointee U.S. Undersecretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs, as well as Chief Economist of the U.S. Dept. of Commerce. Villamil also founded the successful economic consulting practice, The Washington Economics Group, Inc. He serves as Chair of The Beacon Council’s Economic Roundtable; and is on the Board of Directors of Mercantil Commercebank, the Spanish Broadcasting System, and Enterprise Florida - the state’s principal economic development organization. Addressing the topic, “Growing your South Florida business in the ‘new normal’ economy,” Villamil noted, “Understanding the economic environment is important for ––––––––––––––––

your business planning and decisions. It’s going to take us a few years to get back into the kind of period of economic growth we feel the U.S. and global economy can certainly aspire to. “There are opportunities for South Florida businesses to grow by emphasizing ‘core competencies’ as well as capitalizing on the emerging markets of Asia and Latin America,” says Villamil. South Florida certainly has a stronger economic outlook because of our growth orientation in diverse industries. “The bottom line for business owners…focus on productivity, cost controls, credit quality and marketing competitive advantages… turn off the TV in the morning – and just go to work!” he concludes.

Fall and Falling in your Life

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING The season of Fall serves as a reminder of all of the other things that can fall besides leaves. Falling is part of everyone’s life. Falling is a frequent occurrence. You have probably fallen into one or more of the many classifications that categorize falling several times. People fall in love. They fall for someone. They fall all over themselves or they fall all over someone else. They fall in line. They fall apart. They fall under a spell. They fall behind. They fall back upon. They fall short. They fall into or out of. They fall off the wagon. They fall down. They fall hard. Things may fall into place. Things may fall through. Things may fall into your lap. A significant component of falling is balance. Balance in every aspect of your life physical mental, emotional and psychological. Without balance you will go to

extremes and tip over very easily. This can be dangerous to your health and happiness. You can hurt yourself. You can break a bone. You can break down. You can break a heart. You can break a spirit. Another significant component of falling is regaining your equilibrium. You have to find your central pivot point. You have to counter balance yourself and regain control and command of all of the parts involved. You have to compensate for the circumstances. You have to create internal and external harmony and stability. You have to regain your composure and poise. Since falling is such an integral part of life it is a good idea to have someone to catch you if possible. You need to develop a support system. You should always try to have a safety net. A vital part of falling is to be able to get back up again. Sometimes you may need someone to give you a hand and help you up. You may have to ask for help because those around you may not know what you need. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Woodrow Wilson, God and the League of Nations

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS After Democrat Woodrow Wilson’s successful presidential election in 1912, his supporters clamored for appointments. Wilson, son of a Presbyterian minister, responded, “I owe you nothing. God had foreordained that I be President.” Psychiatrists have had a field day analyzing that statement in light of subsequent events concerning the League of Nations. During World War I, Wilson presented his Fourteen Points for a lasting peace, including a League of Nations. He returned from the Paris Peace Conference in July 1919 with the Covenant of the League of Nations, which required ratification by two thirds of the Republican controlled Senate. Henry Cabot Lodge, Republican Senate leader and Wilson’s arch-enemy, did everything he could to defeat the League’s approval, notwithstanding that a majority of the Senate, as well as the American people favored approval of the League. Lodge did not want the Democrats to enter the 1920 election as

Wilson’s “Party of Peace.” Wilson told the Senate, “The League of Nations is the only hope for mankind. Not one word in the Treaty can be changed.” A majority of Senators advised Wilson that that they would approve the Treaty with Lodge’s “reservations,” which most historians conclude were reasonable. Wilson launched a nationwide speaking tour directly to the people for approval of the League, during which he collapsed with a stroke. On March 19, 1920, the Senate voted to reject the Treaty based upon Lodge’s “reservations,” by a margin of only seven votes. Wilson, perhaps believing his League was foreordained by God, refused to the very end to free his Democratic Senators to support the compromises, which would have resulted in the U.S. entry into the League. French Premier Clemenceau said of Wilson, “He thinks he is another Jesus Christ come upon earth to reform men.” On Armistice Day, 1923, Wilson said as to the Senate failure to adopt the League, “I have seen fools resist Providence before and I have seen their destruction, as will come again. That we shall prevail is as sure as that God reigns.” Shortly thereafter the headline in the New York Times was, “HITLER FORCES RALLYING NEAR MUNICH.”

I have just opened a physical therapy office in Aventura following the one successfully managed for two years by Dr Sophie et Didier Libessart in Sunset. I specialise in :sports treatments like tennis elbow, golfer elbow, swimmer shoulder and all that is related with fractures consequences, sprained joints, strain muscles . My method: i use the most natural tool ever created : the hands during painless sessions , soft manipulations, stretching, global relaxation, breathing techniques. This is maybe another way of getting closer to the patients expectations and treating their pains, neither agressive nor invasive paving the way to a psychological approach. I know my customers have to fully trust me if we want succeed for their health. Alain Mounoury, 18305 Biscayne Boulevard, Suite 240, Aventura , Fl 33160. Phone: 305 384 8435

Kia Forte adds five-door hatchback to lineup Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS An all-new five-door hatchback has been added to the Kia Forte lineup for 2011, giving consumers an alternative to the popular compact sedan. The hatchback offers consumers more flexibility for their everyday needs. Available in LX, EX and SX trim levels for the sedan and EX and SX versions for the hatchback, pricing for the nifty little sedan starts at $14,995 for the base trim model, while hatchback pricing starts at $16,895. Both the sedan and the hatchback come standard with numerous comfort and convenience features, including power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry and hands-free Bluetooth wireless technology connectivity, air conditioning, Sirius Satellite Radio capabilities with three months complimentary service, MP3 connectivity and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. The LX and EX trims are powered by a 2.0-liter 156 hp DOHC four-cylinder

engine (25/34 mpg), with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and multiport electronic fuel injection for better performance and fuel economy. The SX has an upgraded 2.4-liter 173 hp inline four-cylinder engine (22/32 mpg), also with CVVT. New for 2011 are six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission options. Forte LX comes standard with the sixspeed manual while EX and SX trim levels have a standard six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic clutchless shifting (optional on the LX trim). Both the Sedan and Hatchback have an aggressive design, with crisp lines, sweptback headlights and a sleek profile. The hatchback shares a forward-facing look with the sedan and has a rounded rear to increase cargo capacity and functionality. From the front and side the sedan and hatchback have clean profiles with sweeping window arches, smooth fender flairs and body-color side mirrors and door handles. Turn signal indicators are integrated into the side mirrors on EX and SX trims. SX models have a more athletic profile and come with a silver-finished exhaust tip and 17-inch alloy wheels mated to P215/45R17 tires. • EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY I’m unfamiliar with the new drug culture that revolves around the abuse of prescription drugs. As a parent, what can I do? Your question sounds simple, but the following are a few suggestions. Learn all you can about prescription drugs, every one of them; it is easy to do now that we have computers. Get to know your child’s friends; find out what they like to do and meet their parents. Find out where they hang out. You need to create a network of adults that you can trust to monitor all the kids’ safety all the time. Be aware of your child’s online activities, and check for purchases from online pharmacies. Open the letters and packages your child receives by mail. As far as I am concerned, there is no such thing as privacy when a child’s life is concerned. I think the most important thing is to talk, talk, talk. When you see ads or television shows suggesting there is a pill for every ill, discuss this with your child. Explain that even though Americans spend millions in ads, drugs don’t make people healthier and happier. I read one of my daughter’s emails that said her friend had a great time at a party playing Blackout. What is this? Blackout is commonly known as the choking game. Kids choke each other literally until they blackout. They use belts and ropes to apply pressure to the arteries and block the flow of oxygen and blood to the brain. When the pressure is released, there is a brief rush or high. There are many variations of this game, which involve hyperventilating, losing consciousness, etc. This is serious stuff that can cause permanent damage to brain cells and blood pressure. Changes to blood

pressure can cause your child to suffer from stroke, seizure and/or retinal damage. Kids think this activity is really cool!

What is Robotripping? This is the abuse of over-the-counter cough medicines. Please know that these medicines are cheap and easy to obtain. Users get so much of this in their system that they start to hallucinate or “trip” (thus the name). The list of possible side effects is long and frightening — numbness of fingers and toes, facial redness, dry and itchy skin, loss of consciousness, seizures, brain damage, slurred speech, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, headaches, confusion, impaired judgment and even death. Please tell me this isn’t true. I heard kids are giving themselves alcohol enemas. I have no idea how the trend became popular; unfortunately, this is true. The alcohol is absorbed much faster into the bloodstream. You can’t throw up from this alcohol, so it’s much easier to become poisoned. This problem is so, so serious. Kids feel they can get drunk faster, cheaper and without having alcohol on their breath. My son confessed he was involved in something called Trunking. Do states have different laws about how many teen passengers can be in a car? Trunking is the trend where teenage friends ride around in trunks of vehicles to bypass the laws. Also, when they want to travel in large packs that really can’t fit in one car, they ride in the trunk. Toby Rose is president of Toby Rose’s College Prep. She is an independent college counselor, was a Miami-Dade County Outstanding Teacher and served as chairperson of the Dade County School Board Academic Advisory Committee. Fitch ratings upgrades Miami Beach’s Mount Sinai Medical Center to investment grade BY JOANNA PALMER New York-based rating agency, Fitch Ratings, has upgraded Mount Sinai Medical Center’s bond ratings status to BBB- from BB+. Since fiscal year 2008, Mount Sinai has continued to generate increased, positive revenues while still increasing its charity care to the community year after year. The upgrade reflects Mount Sinai’s continued improvement of operating performance and significant expense reduction despite having expanded its presence to six locations over the past three years, including satellite offices in Hialeah, Coral Gables, Aventura and Key Biscayne. The Mount Sinai Heart Institute has developed into one of the state’s strongest cardiac service lines, which has resulted in sharp increases of the hospital’s cardiac surgical volume. Mount Sinai has the best cardiac survival rates in Florida among institutions that perform a high volume of complex procedures, captures the largest market share of valve surgeries in Miami, and ranks #9 in the nation for heart attack survival rates according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

30, 2011, Mount Sinai held $178.4 million of unrestricted cash and investments, equivalent to about 144 days cash on hand. The upgrade from Fitch Ratings continues to reflect Mount Sinai’s improved operating performance, as also reported back in July when Moody’s Investors Services also upgraded Mount Sinai’s outlook to positive at a higher-level rating.

Additional positive rating factors are Mount Sinai’s solid market position as the only hospital in Miami Beach, FL, one of only seven statutory teaching hospitals in the state, the addition of experienced medical staff in other key service lines and strong community support from the hospital’s donors through its foundation. Mount Sinai President and CEO,

Steven Sonenreich, emphasizes that Mount Sinai’s donors are a critical component of its success. “Mount Sinai was established 60 years ago, with the help of visionary community leaders and philanthropists who responded to the need for a new hospital on Miami Beach. Philanthropy continues to play a major role today”, said Sonenreich. According to Fitch Ratings, by June

About Mount Sinai Medical Center Founded in 1949, Mount Sinai Medical Center is the largest independent, private, not-for-profit teaching hospital in South Florida. Mount Sinai’s Centers of Excellence combine technology, research and academics to provide innovative and comprehensive care in its multiple centers of excellence. One of only seven statutory teaching hospitals in the state, Mount Sinai is the hospital of choice for those who seek the level of expertise and care that only a teaching hospital can offer. The medical center’s commitment to quality has garnered prestigious recognition, including designation for five consecutive years as one of America’s Top Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.

Friends Forever Humane Society to host ‘Howl-O-Ween’ at Gardens BY CHERYL TAYLOR

We all know how hard the economic crisis has hurt our lives. And we are people, capable of making decisions, asking for help and moving on. But what about the poor animals that are dropped off, left behind or just put out because families can no longer afford to take care of them? There are no food stamps or welfare system for them. They wander the streets until they

are picked up and, in most cases, euthanized by the system. Enter Friends Forever Humane Society, a non-profit organization created to help those left behind. This no kill charity takes care of all the needs of every dog that enters its shelter until it has a new, loving forever home. To raise money for their cause, they will host some really interesting and diverse events: Friday, Oct. 21 — South Florida’s

Take your dog on a 3,200-square-foot, super-action Doggie Fun Zone performance track during Howl-OWeen at Pinecrest Gardens on Oct. 29.

Calendar Firefighters will take to the runway at the famous Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, with rescue dogs all decked out in the finest of canine couture by Kiki Hamann. Friends Forever is one of the beneficiaries of the proceeds of calendar sales. Guests are encouraged to bring their pets, in costume, to the main ballroom to participate in this fun evening. There will be a costume contest, specialty vendors, food, music and a cash bar. After the fashion show the firefighters will be available to sign your calendar. Saturday, Oct. 29 — Pinecrest Gardens will host Howl-O-Ween, a spooktacular family fun day. It is the first time that animals will be allowed inside the gardens. You are invited to bring your pet to participate in a parade, as well as several contests, including best costume. PetsMart is our sponsor and along with the one and only Doggy Fun Zone (www.doggiefunzone.com), there will be specialty vendors, food, activities and, most importantly, pet adoptions. More than 20 rescues will be available to choose from and find the perfect pet. Please join us at these events for a great time and to help a great cause. For more information on sponsorship, tick-

Fitness ‘do’s & don’t’ BY BARI AUERBACH

When it comes to fitness, it’s not only what you do – but what you don’t do that can make the difference between hitting plateaus and attaining great new goals at the gym or at home. Here are some “do’s and don’ts” to keep in mind while working out: Do choose a home workout routine you can stick to – or a gym you feel comfortable going to. Many people pay for memberships they never use – ironically this could be due to feeling intimidated by not being as fit as others. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry! Most fit people at gyms weren’t always in such great shape…they especially admire people they see working hard to get healthier – and soon enough, they may even be envious of great “before/after” fitness success stories in the making. Do consider choosing the right personal trainer to help jumpstart your fitness program or help you overcome plateaus. If you already belong to a gym, start observing trainers in action to determine which one is using techniques you think would be beneficial and motivational for you. You can also explain your goals to a gym manager so they can help match you with an appropriate trainer or find a trainer who can come to you. But remember - don’t rely solely on referrals because a trainer that’s right for one person may not necessarily be the right one for you. Do make a concerted effort to be versatile and don’t limit yourself to only doing cardio or lifting weights. Cardio vascular exercise, resistance training and enhancing flexibility are all key components, that when combined, help achieve optimal fat burning and overall fantastic fitness results. Do look in the mirror and critically assess your physique so you’ll know what you should keep doing more of – or less of. If you notice your waist is getting wider and your obliques look too blocky, you

don’t want to keep doing side bends with weights or twisting movements. And if you feel your symmetry could be improved, don’t keep focusing on body parts that are already very developed in lieu of placing greater emphasis on other areas that may need improvement. Do make a commitment to ongoing “fitness education” so you can make the most of your training time. But don’t waste time learning about trendy diet/workout plans or gadgets and gizmos promising too good to be true instant results. Good resources for fitness and nutrition articles include the websites bodybuilding.com and Mensfitness.com; Fitness Rx and Oxygen magazines; and Eat-Clean books by fitness model Tosca Reno. Do your nutrition homework so all your sweat equity won’t be sabotaged by eating foods working against your workouts. Most importantly, don’t be fooled into thinking certain products are “good for you.” For example, always check for sugar grams on fruit flavored yogurts, vitamin waters, energy drinks and protein bars that often have as much sugar as candy bars. Do keep forging ahead even if you backtrack and fall out of your fitness groove. There is such a thing as “muscle memory” and most people who have ever experienced endorphins being released after a great workout don’t ever forget that euphoric feeling!
