Lincoln, Grant and the Jews
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS In December 1862, in the Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant, in charge of the Western territory, initiated the most sweeping anti-Semitic regulation in all of American History. He issued General Order No. 11, “which expelled all Jews from Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi, within 24 hours and any Jews remaining will be arrested.” Although only a tiny handful of cotton traders were Jewish (Grant could not name a single violator), anti-Semitism flourished, as Grant wrongfully blamed the Jews for the “raging black market in Southern cotton.” At War’s beginning, the Union navy blockaded the South, preventing them shipping their cotton to foreign ports. Grant had authority to issue trade licenses in his area. Several of Grant’s officers obtained a permit, traveled South by boat, purchased cotton, sold it North, acquiring great wealth. Leading historians trace Grant’s Order to his father, Jesse, a cunning businessman, who denigrated his
son for his past financial failures. Jesse decided to obtain a cotton permit from his son. On his way, he stopped in Cincinnati and convinced the Mack brothers (who were Jewish) to invest in his cotton venture. To his credit, Grant turned down his father, however, unable to express his rage against his father, he took it out on the Jews with his infamous Order. In Paducah, Kentucky, “Union officers gave the town’s 30 Jewish families-all longterm residents- none of them speculators – with several families having sons in the Union Army- 24 hours to leave.” Paducah’s resident Cesar Kaskel took the first train to Washington and dispatched a telegram to President Lincoln pleading for a meeting. Kaskel met with Lincoln, who knew little or nothing of Grant’s Order. Kaskel described Grant’s Order as an “outrage against humanity.” Kaskel had the foresight to bring documents with him, signed by leading Paducah citizens and military authorities, as proof of their good citizenship and loyalty to the Union. Lincoln read the documents, made a heart-warming Biblical reference to Father Abraham protecting the children of Israel and revoked Grant’s Order. Lincoln became world-wide hero to Jews. Grant later claimed that he had signed the document without reading it.

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING “The dog ate my homework”, “The bus was late”, “The computer was down”, “The check is in the mail”, and “It’s not you it’s me”, are just a few of the most commonly used excuses. An excuse is an attempt to lessen the blame attached to something. It is an attempt to obtain an exemption and to be “let off the hook” for a certain behavior or lack of behavior. It is an attempt to be released from a duty or obligation. It is a reason put forth to justify a fault or an offense. It is a pseudo explanation. It is, sort of, an apology. It usually seeks forgiveness. We make excuses for many of our own behaviors in life. The only time you might be justifiably upset and have regrets is if you knew better but still did not make the right choice. We also make excuses for the bad behavior of others. When you are the
victim of bad behavior you can decide whether or not you will accept and overlook the behavior or pardon the offender. Some actions and behaviors are inexcusable. They are truly indefensible and unforgivable. There are some instances when you should not, under any circumstances, accept an apology or rationalize the bad behavior. Physical abuse is on the top of that list. Remember, violence escalates and can hurt you or even kill you. Be sure to let go of any guilt you might have for having done something or not having done something. Guilt can be very selfdestructive. It may force you to blame others. It may prompt you to punish yourself for imagined faults or omissions. Sometimes, you should make excuses to yourself for your own behavior because at the time you did not have any other options or you were ignorant of the options. You did the best you could under the circumstances. You need to forgive yourself. You need to be less judgmental and more tolerant of yourself. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Living in South Florida, we’re surrounded by water, but only a limited amount is drinkable. The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) staff works around the clock to deliver high-quality drinking water that meets or exceeds local, state and federal requirements, as well as the reliable sewer services you use every day. Just as cars, roads, bridges and even your body wear down due to age and stress, so do the more than 14,000 miles of underground pipes and treatment plants currently in use in Miami-Dade County. Since there are some pipes as old as 80 years still in service, WASD is embarking on a Multi-year Capital Improvement Plan to enhance and upgrade our infrastructure, which will result in improved service for decades to come, including improved firefighting capacity, environmental improvements, economic growth and increased capacity. This 15- to 20-year project will cost $12.6 billion. Consequently, starting Oct. 1 there will be an eight percent rate increase. But keep in mind that the average residential customer willsee their bill rise but $3.36 a month. So, essentially for pennies for a day, Miami-Dade County residents will be making an investment in the infrastructure that serves more than 2.3 million of them on a daily basis, in addition to thousands of visitors and tourists. To put things in perspective consider this: Miami-Dade County has the largest water and sewer utility in the Southeastern United States. Yet even with the rate increase, WASD’s rates will remain among thelowest in the state and the country. Improvements to Miami-Dade County’s pipes and treatment plants are going to take time, and they are going to take money. But simply put, we’re investing in the future because our water is worth it.

Dahan is now offering group and private classes for adults and children at Moti Horenstein’s Hisardut Krav Maga (MHKA) in North Miami Beach, where students learn the reality-based Israeli self-defense system developed by world champion and nine degree black belt Hanshi Moti Horenstein. Dahan’s long list of accomplishments includes receiving the titles of International Ambassador and International Instructor of the Year 2012 and 2013 bestowed by the World Head of Family Sokeship Council Hall of Fame, the most elite and prestigious grandmasters council in the world. After beginning his martial arts training in Europe when he was just 10-years-old, Dahan went on to develop a strong base in traditional martial arts, and then focused on learning Hisardut Krav Maga. Today, he is the international representative for the organization, spreading Hisardut Krav Maga throughout the world. He has also created a Krav Maga DVD available on Amazon.com this fall 2013. When he’s not in the dojo, Dahan can often be found sharing his knowledge and

tactical knife skills with state and local law enforcement agencies or welcoming new members at MHKA - linking the world's most effective martial arts styles together with the energy of the mind, body, and spirit leading to personal development and wellbeing. Dahan explains, “The MHKA teaching method focuses on practical techniques that work in real life and help ensure our students’ safety.” MHKA has been ranked “among the top martial arts academies in the nation” by Nicholas Cokinos, President of Educational Funding Company; and the academy’s competitors are regarded as some of the best full contact fighters in the world. Range Rover Sport has aluminum structure, latest technology Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS I recently journeyed to San Francisco to attend the North American press launch of the new and much-anticipated 2014 Range Rover Sport, the smaller and less expensive member of the Range Rover family. After a 300-mile ride and drive along some very dicey highways in the Santa Cruz Mountains and a subsequent very challenging 15-mile off-road course, I came away with a growing appreciation for this new vehicle. Range Rover executives attending the event told me this new Sport is the fastest, mostagile and responsive Land Rover ever made and, with its all-new high-strength aluminum structure, it weighs about 800 pounds less than the last model. That weight loss allows the vehicle to deliver better agility and performance, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. The new Sport was developed right alongside the 2013 Range Rover, so it
delivers the same on-road dynamics, as well as the fabled Land Rover all-terrain capability. The technologically advanced Sport resembles earlier Range Rover models, but has an assertive, muscular exterior, a luxurious interior and practical flexibility. Featuring Land Rover’s breakthrough suspension design and innovative dynamic chassis technologies, the Sport has all-new aluminum unibody architecture (the previous generation had an integrated steel body-frame mounted on a full frame chassis). The resulting weight reduction enables better performance and handling, and a nice blend of comfort and luxury. Under the hood, there’s a choice of 340 hp supercharged V-6 or a 510 hp supercharged V8. I drove both versions and I personally preferred the smaller engine option, though I recognize that there are off-road and highway situations when that extra power and torque come in handy. The engines are mated to a standard eight-speed automatic ZF transmission and there’s a choice of transfer cases — single speed Torsen or two-speed locking with low range. As you might expect in a Range Rover, the new Sport has a beautifully crafted, luxurious interior and there also is a new wrin-

kle — a 5+2 third-row seating option for occasional use. The seats are fine for the kids, but they’re not going to be acceptable to full-size adults. The new Sport comes with the latest advanced electronic driver assistance technologies, including standard Intelligent Stop/Start to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. There’s also the available new fully automatic Terrain Response 2 system that is amazing in its ability to handle the most challenging byways. Four models of the 2014 Range Rover
Sport are offered in the United States. They include the Sport SE for $63,495; Sport HSE, $68,495; Sport Supercharged, with the 510 hp, five-liter supercharged V-8, $79,995; and the top of the line Range Rover Sport Autobiography, with an MSRP of $93,295. Take good care at Women’s Health Rx BY DEA M. RUSHING
dyspareunia, is also a fairly common issue and is frequently, but not always, related to vaginal dryness. Like vaginal dryness there are very effective treatments for dyspareunia related to peri- and postmenopausal changes. However, painful sexual intercourse can be a symptom of much more serious health issues like infections, endometriosis or pelvic masses. For women’s overall health status and quality of life, painful sexual intercourse should not be ignored, say the center’s experts.
Physician Assistant Women’s Health Rx is a comfortable, safe non-obstetrics environment that is specifically focused on women’s gynecologic health. Services include cervical cancer prevention, menopausal symptom management, contraception, breast health, urinary incontinence management and genetic cancer screenings. The goal at Women’s Health Rx is to educate patients about their gynecologic health and empower them so they can avoid preventable illness and have an improved quality of life. Let’s face it – women are not generally enthusiastic about Pap testing and gynecology exams. The Women’s Health Rx team recognizes that women are often worried about being uncomfortable or embarrassed about an issue. You may believe that there is no treatment for a particular problem or may be scared about a possible diagnosis. These concerns may have kept you from discussing important issues with your gynecologist or from seeing a gynecologist at all. The problem is – you could be missing critical opportunities to prevent serious illness. Or you may be living with irritating, sometimes even debilitating symptoms that are affecting your quality of life. There are prevention strategies and treatments available that can help you live a better, happier life. Cervical cancer prevention Cervical cancer has been found to be a largely preventable disease. The single most important aspect of cervical cancer prevention is regular Pap testing, which can detect abnormal cells before they become cancerous. In the event that abnormal cells are found on a Pap test, there are effective treatments that can prevent those cells from becoming cancer. Additionally, there are two vaccines currently available to protect females against the HPV types that are most likely to cause cancer. The center’s specialists remind women that routine Pap testing is one of the most pow-

erful actions women can take to prevent cancer. Vaginal dryness and irritation Vaginal and vulvar dryness and irritation is a very common issue that affects many women who are peri- or postmenopausal. Typically, vaginal dryness is caused by a lack of lubrication because of decreased estrogen levels. Often, lowgrade vaginal dryness can be managed with water-based lubrication. Unfortunately, however, vaginal dryness can progress to serious pain and irritation, cracking, bleeding and possible infections. There are very effective hormone and nonhormone treatments available for vaginal dryness. This is not something that women “just have to live with.” Painful intercourse Painful sexual intercourse, known as
Insurance Insurance companies recognize the value of annual gynecologic examinations. Many insurance plans currently wave their annual co-payment and/or deductible fees for well-woman annual examinations to encourage women to have these exams annually. Each insurance plan is different and you should inquire with your plan regarding well-woman examination policies, but you may find that your annual exam maybe free. You’ll want to go back again and again to Port of Call BY LEVI MEYER
My wife Lauren and I like to think of ourselves as “foodies” and when we stumble upon an incredible dining experience, we like to share it with the world. If you haven’t already heard, Chef Ben Huselton, who was awarded 2013 “Best Chef America,” has joined together with one of New York’s most famous sushi artists, Kevin Z, to open a new restaurant in The Village at Gulfstream Park. Port of Call: Modern American Cuisine, better known as POC, is a fusion restaurant that brings together modern American cuisine and exquisite sushi creations, with a fun tapas style theme. Feeling adventurous, we left our dining fate up to our server and played a game of Culinary Roulette. She asked a few questions about preference and allergies and proceeded to hand select some personal favorites from the menu. Admittedly, I am not too adventurous when it comes to my drink, so I ordered single malt, of which they had a vast collection from which to choose. My wife, less picky in this subject, had the bartender whip up a fruity concoction in a martini glass, and all was well in the world. After a few sips and a little conversation, the food began to arrive and the presentation was show stopping.
Our server brought us two soups – one of them was a cold tomato gazpacho, split down the middle with red and yellow tomato to form a Ying Yang shape in the bowl. The lobster bisque, presented in an incredibly unique fashion, was served with the lobster alone in an empty bowl and the bisque was poured over the top at your table (whoa!). For appetizers, we were served a Watermelon Asparagus & Mozzarella Salad and Foie Gras on a bed of Jameson flavored Shredded Pear. The salad was artfully displayed and very refreshing, while the Foie Gras was surprisingly salty sweet. We were sufficiently teased and eager to see what was in store for our main course. Queue the Glazed Beef Short Ribs with Whipped Carrots! Having my best table manners in mind, I reached for my fork and knife, only to discover that a knife would not be necessary. The meat was so tender you could have pulled it apart with a spoon! Definitely among the top five short ribs I’ve ever had. Needless to say, manners went out the window as I cleaned the plate with my bread. I was so engulfed with my short ribs, that I barely stopped to make note of my wife’s gorgeous sushi platter that was so well presented that it could have (and probably has) won an award. We were stuffed, but decided to wait
around long enough to let our food settle so we could see what dessert masterpieces were in store for us. What? You didn’t think we would skip dessert, did you? I could go on and on describing dessert, but instead, you will just have to trust me when I tell you to order the Deconstructed Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Ice Cream and Spicy Pecans. You might also want to get the homemade Mango, Watermelon and Mojito sorbet assortment. As we waddled to the car, we were already planning our next visits (yes, visits – plural). We want to make sure we go for POC’s $39 weekend brunch as well as the weekday “order guaranteed in 15 minutes” lunch. We look forward to going back and we encourage everyone to go check it out. The staff was friendly, the location is perfect, the price is reasonable and the food is incredible. What more can you ask for? The Point’s ‘Fashion for a Cause’: Your ticket to help fight breast cancer BY BARI AUERBACH
Tickets are virtually “flying off the runway” for the gala Nov. 7 Fashion for a Cause luncheon planned by The Point of Aventura Resident Club featuring fashions by Bloomingdale’s Aventura. But before the benevolent “project runway” at Beth Torah benefitting The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation and Memorial Breast Cancer Center wows even the most stylish fashionistas, there’s still time to get your ticket to help fight breast cancer. In recognition of Breast Cancer Month observed in October, The Point of Aventura’s series of festive philanthropic events prior to the Fashion for a Cause luncheon include the Oct. 24 “Cooking for a Cause” culinary experience at Aventura’s great family-style Luca Bella Italian restaurant from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. The event will benefit Memorial Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Services. On Oct. 3, The Point also planned a fun and informative “Pink Tea” sponsored by Luca Bella. Guests invited to “wear a bit of pink” sipped tea and indulged in delicious appetizers and tempting Michy’s cupcakes while health professionals from Memorial Breast Cancer Center lectured and answered questions about women’s breast health. Another stylish event on Oct. 8 at Luca Bella featured a wine pairing dinner featuring renowned Sommelier Estella
Cellini of Stacole wines. Keeping the momentous momentum going on Nov. 7, the Fashion for a Cause luncheon at Beth Torah will be hosted by Master of Ceremonies, Local 10 News anchor and reporter Neki Mohan. Guest speakers will be Dr. Alejandra Perez, Director, Memorial Breast Cancer Center; and Dr. Peter Eisenberg, Radiologist, Memorial Women’s Imaging Center. The fabulous fashion show will showcase “trending now” fall fashions presented by Bloomindale’s Aventura as well as a live and silent auction and raffle. Just some of the sensational prizes will be a $1,000 Neiman Marcus shopping spree, an Eastern Caribbean Celebrity Cruise, an African Safari, Total Wine Tasting, and Luca Bella Wine Pairing, Tasting Dinner. “The Point of Aventura is a very philanthropic, private residential community, where residents have united as a community to support this worthy cause and help fight breast cancer,” explains Michele Bonarigo, Spa Director/The Point of Aventura. “We’re encouraging neighborhood communities and businesses to lend their support by attending the November 7 Fashion for a Cause event.” For more information about tax deductible Fashion for a Cause tickets, phone: Liz Ramallo at The Point of Aventura (305)725-8675 or visit fashionforacause. ticketbud.com/breastcancer.
