ard Rock Café Miami, located in Bayside Marketplace was the place to be as hundreds of guests from the Aventura Marketing Council (AMC), Argentine American Chamber of Commerce (AACC), Downtown Miami & Brickell Chamber of Commerce (DMBC), Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce (MBCC), Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce (M-DCC), Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) and Viernes Culturales joined together for a jumbo networker that featured great food and drink, amazing singers and unbeatable networking. Gonzalo del Rio, sales manager for Hard Rock Café Miami, said, “This was the third year that we hosted this fabulous event... and each year surpasses the one before! This year, we’ve asked guests to donate ‘from the heart’ to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of So. Florida, my chosen charity.” Using a “Christmas in October” theme, del Rio and his talented team served up a full holiday dinner with all the trimmings in their private dining room, as well as wonderful passed hors d’oeuvres and gracious hospitality throughout the evening. There was no doubt that Hard Rock Café

Miami is a perfect place for upcoming meetings and social events. Blue Bell Ice Cream was back for the third time, and the line of guests waiting to enjoy their delicious ice cream was testament to the tremendous success the company has had since entering the Florida market. Emcee “showman extraordinaire,” George Neary from the Gr. Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, was just that- a ‘showman extraordinaire’! Everyone knew they were in for a treat when he donned his ‘sparkle’ jacket to take the stage. Ad-libbing off his 36-page agenda, Neary had the audience eagerly awaiting his next joke. Celebrity Judges included community leader and philanthropist Aventura Comm. Billy Joel; multi-Carbonell Award- winning actor and director Dan Kelley, now starring at the Miami Beach Stage Theatre; Super DJ Angel Rodriguez who is also agent for the legendary salsa duo “Hansel y Raul”; Nicole Gates, Promotions Director of WLYF-101.5 FM Radio; and Heather Davis, noted model and actress. ––––––––––––––––

Henry Menendez of HNO Productions provided all the audiovisual and photographer Juan Saco Miranoff was taking photos throughout the evening. Each singer took the stage, representing one of the participating organizations: 11-year old Samuel Alexander, representing the GMCVB, sang “It Feels Like Tonight; 17 yearold opera singer Nicole Bequer sang “Think of Me”; Daniel Bouchet, who sang “Mack The Knife” representing the AACC; Octavia Cummings – the winner of the contest – representing the M-DCC, blew the roof off with her version of “A Fool in Love”; Lourdes the Voice, representing the DMBC, sang her original song, “Bajo la Luna”; Magda Ortiz, representing the MDGLCC, sang “Animal” and Rona Rose Witek, representing the MBCC, won runner-up with “Before He Cheats.” It was a difficult decision for the five celebrity judges to select a winner and runner-up...their scores were combined with the audience votes to reach the final decision. CPAs Steven Price and Derby Norvilus from the firm of Goldstein Schechter Koch, served as Official Scorekeepers, and tallied the votes. Just before the results were announced, 14-year old Ashley Briggs, a singer/songwriter, who is a volunteer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, entertained the audience with “There’s Your Trouble.” The winning singer, Octavia Cummings, won two round-trip tickets on Continental Airlines to go anywhere in the U.S., Mexico or Canada, thanks to friends from the GMCVB and Continental Airlines. In addition, the M-DCC’s selected charity ‘Voices for Children,’ received a $500 donation. Runner-up Rona Rose Witek won two tickets to all the 20112012 shows at the Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre, thanks to the MBCC and Sharon Kersten PR.

Fear of Compromise

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Maybe your difficulty making a commitment to someone or something is really a fear of compromising. Maybe, you do not want to have to accept the compromises that are part of all relationships. It is more about perceived loss of freedom and personal integrity than the actual loss. It is also about the loss of control. Many people feel threatened if they cannot control everything completely. It is frightening for them so they avoid it. It can be about the need to win in every situation no matter what is involved or how trivial it may be. Winning and having it their way takes precedence because they have low self-esteem and any compromise is losing to them. Compromise is a mutual agreement negotiated between individuals to satisfy their opposing or opposite needs and desires. Any negotiation can feel like a loss to some people. In order to reach a compro-

mise everyone involved has to modify their demands and give up some control. Learn how to negotiate and make small compromises by using a non-threatening technique. Use the number system. Assign a number from one to ten that describes an activity’s importance to you. Ask the other person to also assign a number to the activity. For instance, the question of dinner may arise. The other person may say, “Let’s go out to dinner.” Ask how important that is. The other person may say, “I’m about a 10.” “I need a break.” You can say, “I’m about a five.” “I had a hectic day. Perhaps, we could go someplace casual and come home early.” “Let’s plan on another day for a more formal dinner.” This is a positive, peaceful and productive negotiation. It eliminates the potential for upsets, arguments, resentments or disappointments. It is an open, honest and non-emotional means of communication. Practice this technique with partners, friends and acquaintances. You will be pleasantly surprised at how satisfying and successful it is. It can be applied to practically every situation. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

The Piano Man: Accepting requests at Aventura Hospital Every afternoon at 3 p.m., the grand lobby of Aventura Hospital fills with the sounds of timeless songs thanks to a gentleman affectionately known as ‘Bertie’. Retired New York attorney Bertram Friedlieb first touched the keys of the Aventura Hospital’s baby grand piano after a physical therapy appointment following knee surgery. Visitors heard the musical maestro and began requesting songs. With permission from the facility, Bertie dusted off his old music books and returned the following day. More than a year later, Bertie is an Aventura Hospital staple, playing fan favorites and jazz classics. “I used to play at Nordstrom when I first moved down here, but when they stopped their live music, I had nowhere to play. Aventura Hospital was kind enough to let me tickle their ivories,” said Bertie. “I love the piano and I love to entertain people. It gave me a second lease on life and a purpose to my days.” Most days, Bertie comes to Aventura Hospital to have lunch in the cafeteria before settling in at the piano bench. Armed with his music book, a constant

‘Custom Party’

Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY If you haven’t already decided what you’re going to be for Halloween, here are some foolish ghoulish ideas for costumes you might actually consider wearing yearround in Aventura… Police Officer: If you dress up like one of Aventura’s “best in blue” officers and get pulled over by a real cop for speeding, you might be able to avoid getting a ticket…just make sure your badge doesn’t say “Made in Taiwan.” Superhero: If you morph into a superhero who can fly, imagine how much faster you could travel around town feeling sorry for all the mere mortals still stuck in traffic…And if you have super human strength, you can impress everyone at the gym with how much you can bench - or even better – have no problem lifting up and

moving the car that parked too close to you before you get more dings in your door. Cashier: If you look good in green, it could be fun to dress up like a Publix cashier so you can scan your own groceries much quicker and never have to wait in line behind someone with hundreds of coupons again! Princess: You may want to pick a more unique costume – unless you don’t mind looking like every other girl around town! Scrubs: If you or your kids dress up like a doctor or nurse, why not capitalize on the costumes…Tell the hospital for a fair price, when you go door to door trick or treating you’ll let everyone know the current wait time in the ER is only three minutes! Pirate: If you dress up like Captain Hook, don’t wear your eye patch around Lenscrafters or they may try to pull you in for an exam…But this could be the perfect costume for every one who already has the most valuable treasure - a home in Aventura - where no one’s ever haunted by scary high crime rates or frighteningly low temperatures!

Avoiding the Holiday Bulge

Michelle Ishakov NUTRITION & YOU Fall is the start to many yearly celebrations, holidays, and other fall festivities. With all the yummy, hearty food and drinks going around, one can pack on the pounds in just a few servings! Not to mention with cooler weather comes less workouts, meaning even more weight gain. From candies, chocolates, fall beverages, and heart holiday meals, it is no wonder many of us make losing weight our new year’s resolution! Here are a few tips for keeping your figure during this wonderful time of year! When it comes to drinks, try to have drinks that are not mixed with extra sugars. Stick to wine, tequila, vodka, or whiskey. If having a mixed drink, pair it with diet soda. Try to eliminate fruity, sugary drinks that contain a lot of calories. On the nights you want to drink, try to eat less carbs that day so that you can use your carbs towards your drinks. If you are at a dinner and about to order food, stick to vegetables and proteins (such as fish or meat). No carbs, which means no sugars (dessert), pasta, rice, or potatoes. If there is a buffet at a dinner party and you don’t know what foods to choose or what foods to combine, opt for 1 to 2 types of protein. For example, eat a piece of fish and/or meat plus salad. Choose a green

salad over salads that contain corn, beans, and pasta. If you feel like having beans for example, you can have beans and rice (1/2 a cup each) plus vegetables; but do NOT have meat, beans, rice, vegetables, fruit, dessert, etc. This is a big no-no. Not only will you gain weight, but you will feel bloated and uncomfortable the next day. Remember, it’s all about proper food combinations! A tip I highly recommend is having a protein snack before you leave the house to avoid arriving to dinner hungry. Hunger leads to poor food decisions! Try not to eat a late dinner as we burn less calories at night (and are less active). If you are feeling hungry late at night, go for a protein snack that doesn’t contain lots of sugars (5 grams max per serving). With every alcoholic drink you have, have a glass of water. Alcohol dehydrates you. Drinking water will also keep you fuller and you will not feel hung over the next day. Finally, if you feel that you “over did it” the night before or couldn’t hold back on savoring all the yummy foods at dinner, make sure to watch what you eat the following day. Have a healthy day by having proteins and vegetables. To avoid that holiday bulge and receive helpful recommendations for the fall season, please come visit me at Nutriway at the Promenade Shops in Aventura. I can also be reached at 305-4387775 or mishakov@mynutriway.com. See you soon!

‘Cups’ at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center an entertaining journey through women’s lives Heartwarming play held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October In a heartwarming journey tracing the milestones in a woman’s life through the bras she has worn, the City of Aventura presents Cups, a play by Joni Sheram, Wed., Oct. 12 through Sat., Oct. 22 at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. The play which takes place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October reflects on sexual awakening, having children, forging a personal identity, battling disease and growing older, as women move from training bras to strapless pushups, maternity bras to prosthesis and bras that could be burned in the name of women’s liberation. The Denver Post review said, “While this may seem like a ‘girls only’ show, it isn’t.” The depth of Sheram’s writing transcends gender, asking us to consider the touchstones of our own life. Sheram’s script captures many of the remarkable, kaleidoscopic events witnessed by the past three or four generations, as well as revealing a reflective and inquisitive spirit that artfully applies a liberal dose of humor to it all.” For more information, call 954-462-0222 or visit aventuracenter.org

Attorney Barry Snyder: Making a case for supporting ‘NANAY’ youth and elders BY BARI AUERBACH

Save the date! On Friday, Nov. 4, the National Alliance to Nurture the Aged and the Youth (NANAY) will hold its 17th Anniversary and Awards Banquet – a special event being chaired by attorney Barry Snyder of Snyder & Gonzalez, P.A. – a renowned personal injury/criminal defense law firm serving clients throughout Florida, including Aventura and North Miami Beach. Beyond helping clients recover millions in settlements and judgments, Snyder and his partners Victor M. Gonzalez and Julio Munoz are dedicated to helping put “lives back together again.” This mission extends to the firm’s support of NANAY and many other worthy causes. NANAY, Inc. is a charitable organization providing psychological, social, health and emotional support for youth and elders in the community, irrespective of race, sex or creed. NANAY also provides free services such as foreclosure intervention and assistance with loan modifications. While Snyder & Gonzalez has over 50 years

Magic Johnson teamed up with Best Buy to launch Technology Program at NANAY Center (L-R) NANAY Exec. Dir. Evelyn Bruce, NANAY Exec. VP-COO Bennie Trinidad, Miami-Dade Comm.Jean Monestime, NANAY President Joy Bruce, Magic Johnson, North Miami Mayor Andre Pierre, Best Buy Miami District Services Mgr. John Robinson

of experience representing clients of all ages, the legal team finds it especially rewarding to facilitate positive outcomes for young people – yet another reason why Snyder is proud to encourage support for NANAY. Just some of the high profile cases the firm has been involved with related to help-

ing a 13-year-old severely injured after falling from a moving school bus; and Snyder was also part of a legal defense team that helped a young man wrongly accused of murder as a teen receive justice. “I was proud to be a part of a legal defense team that truly understood the plight of a

young man who was in way over his head in a legal system that refused to understand his particular situation,” Snyder said. Now, as Chair of NANAY’s Anniversary Gala and Awards Banquet, Snyder is championing the cause to ensure the philanthropic evening featuring dancing and a silent auction will be the most successful yet. This year, the opulent venue will be the Signature Grand in Davie and tax deductible donations will help provide supportive services to elders and after school access to high-tech computers for youths. There are still opportunities to donate items for the silent auction that will showcase valuable items including: Magnificent ceramic Chinese vases, a one week vacation at Orlando’s Westgate Resort and Spa, a four-day Caribbean cruise and Paula Deen porcelain cookware. Gala benefactors can also have their names immortalized on a “Legacy Tree” that will be displayed in the main hall of the NANAY Community Center. “Recognition is gratifying, but of course, your best reward is the satisfaction of knowing your gift has made a difference in the lives of elders and youth,” Snyder said. Pet Tips Brought to You by Pet Supermarket

Puppy Chewing: Damage Control Puppies chew on whatever they can get their mouths on. They do this because dogs learn through their mouths and a puppy is just starting to discover his world. Puppies chew for different reasons: for entertainment, to burn off energy, to appease curiosity or simply ease their teething. As puppies grow older, they generally grow out of it. However, during the time that the chewing is excessive, there are things you can do to limit damage: • Supervision: Like caring for a child, know where your pup is and what he's up to • Confinement: Limit you puppy to a safe and secure place, away from undesired items he may chew on, including electrical cords. You

might want to consider crate training your pup. • Incentive: Give him access to appropriate chew toys, if your pup then chews on the toys, praise him. Cheering you puppy's actions will strengthen the desired behavior. • Deterrent: If possible, treat inappropriate objects with a product designed to discourage chewing. Products like Grannick's Bitter Apple(R) and Fooey(R) will give any object an awful taste. Keep in mind that if the chew toy becomes torn or looks like pieces will fall off it's time to replace the toy. Pet Supermarket offers a wide variety of toys for puppies, from plush comfort toys to hard durable chew toys.

"Claws" and Effect-Caring for Your Cat's Your cat's claws are an important part of her overall being. They provide defense, aid in agility, and when a cat stretches out and claws a scratching post, she's also exercising important back and leg muscles. Here are some tips to help you manage your cat's claws. • In order to keep your cat happy and your furniture safe, provide a variety of scratching posts in different shapes, sizes, and materials. Rope, sisal, carpet, and cardboard posts are all available, and there should be at least one tall enough to accommodate a full-body "stretch and scratch". With plenty of surfaces to choose from, it's likely your cat won't feel the need to

use your sofa as her favorite scratching place. • Keeping your cat's claws trimmed also cuts down on unnecessary scratching. One of the newest and easiest ways to do this is with the PediPaws(tm) nail trimmer, which is painless and easy to use. There's also the option of "claw caps", which are made of a soft plastic material. You can find these claw caps at Pet Supermarket. Just ask us for Soft Claws(tm)!. At Pet Supermarket, we have everything you'll need to keep your kitty's paws groomed and exercised. We carry a large selection of scratching posts, kitty furniture, grooming aids, and much more. Visit us today to create the perfect habitat for your favorite feline.

EAT THIS... DRINK THAT So my very picky brother came to the states (he lives in Costa Rica) a few weeks ago and wanted to go out to dinner. I didn’t really feel like hiking it all the way down South – not even to mid-town or the Design District, but was at a loss. What would satisfy his need for the best food and service – while remaining really close to home. Well, let’s see – Chef Allen… gone. Pilar… too old-school. Grill on the Alley, Bella Luna, Cheesecake Factory (yeah, right) …all “mall”…not going to happen. So after racking my brain, I remembered Turnberry. Bourbon Steak. When you think about Michael Mina, you just can’t go wrong. So in we went. It was quiet…at 8:30 ona Saturday. I was a bit surprised bwecasue I’d expected a bit of chaos. Aventurians do not usually go to dinner much later than the 8PM hour so I thought, “Hmmm…maybe something is wrong.” But much to the contrary. At 9 PM the place started filling up. Not the tables so much, but the entire bar area. There was a private party. And as the folks filed in, the appetizers began circulating and all was right in the world. Little sliders, bacon wrapped scallops, fries, fries, and more fries, and the like. From our “front view table” my husband Ian and I, my brother and our friends Charles and Jacque all watched the action while dining on delicious cuisine. So, what did we have? Okay, here’s the deal. As we sat down, mere minutes after out perfectly mixed artisanal cocktails were transferred from the bar to our table, the waiter delivered Bourbon Steak’s signature fries. Some places offer bread – Mina’s idea of an “on the house” starter are hand-cut fires. They come – crispy, hot and fresh from the fryer with three dipping sauces including a house made ketchup. Starters, which are not inexpensive, are large enough to share. I began with the heirloom tomato salad, which was served with Burrata cheese, pine nuts, and a light vinaigrette ($18). I could have stopped there and it would have been enough, but naturally, hat is dinner without, well, dinner. I ordered short ribs with celery root purée, baby vegetables, and perigourdine ($32). The meat was so tender it literally fell off the bone. Being a fan of slow cooked food, I was thrilled with my choice.

My husband began with Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho, which was topped with Alaskan King Crab, and Serrano Chili. It was light and refreshing and a perfect beginning to his petite Wagyu NY Strip ( medium rare and was so tender it was fork-cuttable). Served with Short Rib Croutons, Jasmine Rice, and Cilantro Chimichurri it would have been worth any price, however, as part of the Miami Spice menu (on a Saturday, too) – it was only $45 (usually $35 but there was a $10 supplement – it is Wagyu after all). Specials occur regularly, and that particular night, they were offering a 48ounce bone in New York Strip for just $125. Okay, it was on the pricey side, but there was a lot of “dinner” waiting to happen. After a bit of hemming and hawing, my bro decided that it was his vacation and he could indulge if he chose to. And with that, a stunning piece of beef, prepared a perfect medium and pre-sliced came to the table the pan it was cooked in. I am not sure how I feel about this because, while it was flavorful and well done (as in perfectly prepared), there were only seven medium slices of meat. Most of the weight came from the bone. We were, at first, going to share it and if we had chosen to go that route, we would’ve been sorely disappointed (and still hungry). Sides are all separate. We shared broccoli – nothing special, but being a fan of the veggie – it was quite tasty. The truffled mac and cheese was creamy and tasty, and in my opinion, amazing. After all, you can never go wrong with anything with the word truffle in the title. One of our friends ordered the scallops. For $36, he received a few medium sized crustaceans on a plate. They were prepared nicely, but he is a big guy and definitely needed more food. The hit of the night came at the end. Ian’s spice menu selection included dessert. Not a huge fan of dessert, I always tend to prefer walking away with savory in my mouth. He ordered bread pudding. Bourbon and Peach bread pudding topped with Vanilla bean ice cream was enough to make it all worth it. After each taking a very satisfying bite, we paid the check and left satisfied. So, all in all, would I rush back? Perhaps, for select things when I want to indulge. It is expensive. But being that it is so close to my house, it did the trick. Outlook for Fourth Quarter indicates some small gains

Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH If you have not checked your calendar lately, don’t be surprised to see we’re now in the Fourth Quarter and well on our way towards closing out 2011. And despite a rocky October start on Wall Street, there are new signs the U.S. economy still is improving, even if it’s just seeing minor gains. Unfortunately, for struggling homeowners around South Florida, the Fourth Quarter will bring more pressures on our paychecks and more opportunities to get ready for holiday spending. For the 28th straight month, the U.S. economy was able to squeak out gains according to the latest figures from the Institute for Supply Management. Consumer sentiment also is improving and auto sales are seeing an increase too. And here is more good news: Wholesale oil prices are dropping under $80 a barrel and that’s triggering price drops at local gas stations. Holiday hiring is starting all over South Florida and hopefully will provide thousands of jobs for local unemployed workers. Yet even so, our slow recovery is expected to continue through the end of the year. There still are unresolved problems in Europe, and the unending gridlock in Washington is expected to pull down investor confidence through December. For local families, the Fourth Quarter will mean more tough times, and make it more difficult to pay bills, while price hikes and stalled salaries make it harder than ever to keep up with it all.

I spoke to one South Florida homeowner who told me she has been hearing a lot of bad news from her patients and has to work extra hard just to keep up with her own bills. “I work seven days a week and I see all of my patients,” she said. “Most of them are completely stressed out. They need to come see me just to deal with how they feed their kids. They ask how they’re going to pay their rent. And a lot of them have lost their homes.” That is why financial planners say now is the time to start your own end of the year “money watch.” Here are some things you can do immediately: • Double check your bills to track spending. • Cut back on expenses wherever possible. • Try to save some extra cash over the next few months for holiday shopping. • Consider spreading out purchases to avoid all the bills coming due in January. With improved consumer spending, some money managers forecast possible improvements in the local and national economy. Financial Planner Matt McGrath of Coral Gables financial firm Evensky & Katz advises, “You typically see a boost in the economy from consumer spending in the fourth quarter. Retailers are already getting a jump on holiday advertising and promotions. So we could see improved spending possibly as soon as early October.” A growing number of retailers already are offering lay-away plans and deep discounts to stimulate early holiday shopping. And luckily, South Florida’s biggest economic engines — tourism and foreign trade — are forecast to see solid gains through the end of the year. Going ‘against the grain’ Dr. Arthur Agatston prescribing glten-free diet BY BARI AUERBACH In his newest book, The South Beach Wake Up Call, Dr. Arthur Agatston, father of the South Beach Diet and preventive cardiologist, suggests eliminating all wheat products, rye and barley from your diet may be the “gluten solution” to greater health and well-being. According to Agatston, he noticed some of his patients eating lean proteins, nuts, beans and vegetables during phase one of the South Beach Diet, when no wheat products are allowed for two weeks, were not only losing weight - but also experiencing various health benefits. In a recent NBC Miami news segment, Agatston claims that as a result of following a gluten-free diet, tennis star Novak Djokovic improved his athletic endurance and went on to win Wimbledon and the US Open this year. In The South Beach Wake Up Call: Why America Is Still Getting Fatter and Sicker, Plus 7 Simple Strategies for Reversing Our Toxic Lifestyle, Agatston explains a gluten intolerance can remain undetected yet manifest in adverse health reactions. Agatston’s nurse practitioner noticed her acid reflux condition dramatically improved within just a couple of days after eliminating gluten from her diet. A patient with severe psoriasis also saw miraculous “gluten-free” results when her skin completely healed without having to take strong medications. Today, anyone who wants to try a gluten-free diet won’t have trouble finding a plethora of gluten-free products now available at mainstream supermarkets including gluten-free breads and pastas. There are also many websites such as Celiac.com providing gluten-free safe and unsafe food lists…Did you know bran, matzo, cookie dough and certain mustards contain gluten? To prevent weight gain, Agatston also recommends putting more emphasis on nutrition than counting calories…avoid eating foods high in sugars and transfats as well as high-glycemic index foods such as white rice - try brown rice or the glutenfree grain quinoa instead. Determined to reverse America’s failing health profile, Garston’s new book empha-

sizes his “Toxic Turnaround” program providing realistic tools and strategies for exercising more, sleeping better, reducing stress and eating top “mega foods” such as: Broccoli, brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, avocados and wild salmon (rich in omega-3 fatty acids). Easy to prepare recipes are also included. The South Beach Wake Up Call is expected to be a bestseller in keeping with the success of Agatston’s famous book, The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, DoctorDesigned, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss. The South Beach Diet restricts carbohydrates such as potatoes, fruit, bread, cereal, rice, pasta, beets, carrots, and corn for the first two weeks. After that, most of these foods remain strongly discouraged on the recommended long-term eating plan. Preferred low-sugar carbs that don’t cause blood sugar levels to rise and fall as quickly include brown rice, sweet potatoes, plain oatmeal and quinoa. Mercedes M-Class restyled, gets more technology Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Mercedes-Benz literature says the new M-Class sport utility vehicle is the most technologically advanced SUV they have ever produced. And it is jam-packed with the latest electronic bells and whistles. The 2012 version of the M-Class is the third generation of this remarkably successful vehicle, one that many say began the industry trend toward SUVs with a softer, more car-like ride. It has been significantly re-styled — sits slightly lower, wider and longer — and handles with precision around town or on the highway. There are two M-Class models for 2012 — the fuel efficient ML350 BlueTEC diesel, with 240 hp making 455 poundsfeet of torque, and the popular ML350 4MATIC with a brand new direct-injection 302 hp V-6 engine that makes 273 poundsfeet of torque. Both are mated to a new transmission with a more advanced torque converter lock-up clutch that develops bet-

ter fuel mileage, more responsive driving, quieter operation and more durability. As for styling, 2012 M-Class models have a high belt line and a roofline that slopes down toward the rear, giving the vehicle a sporty look. Chrome luggage rails run the length of the roof. Up front, the nose is dominated by a bold grille holding the familiar three-pointed star logo in the center, while a chrome skid plate curves from the front bumper up toward the grille, which is bracketed by newly designed headlights flush-mounted in the fenders. New LED daytime running lights are recessed in the front bumper. The interior of the new M-Class is spacious and elegant, with obvious attention to detail. Interior trim includes wood and aluminum elements with controls in a silver shadow finish. Optional ambient lighting can be switched between three different colors. A sporty four-spoke steering wheel frames a hooded twin-gauge instrument cluster; the left one houses the analog speedometer and fuel gauge, while a tachometer and coolant temperature gauge are on the right, bridged by a 4.5-inch screen that can display a wide range of information, including a trip computer and GPS navigation directions.

Mercedes M-Class SUV has a high belt line and a sloping roofline that gives it a sporty look.

The steering wheel holds shifting paddles and multifunction buttons for scrolling through menus on the driver’s display. The buttons also can adjust the audio volume, make and take phone calls, or activate the voice control system. There are new stalks on the steering column for turn signals, high beams, wipers, cruise control and transmission mode. At the top center of the dashboard is a seven-inch COMAND display bordered by large swiveling air vents. The new head unit comes with a 10-gigabyte music storage hard drive, SD card slot and an MP3 compatible

CD/DVD player, as well as a Bluetooth interface for wireless audio streaming and hands-free phone operation, HD/AM/weatherband radio, an FM phase-diversity twin tuner and a USB port hidden in the storage compartment of the center console. Base price on our 2012 Mercedes ML350 BlueTEC is $50,490.

ADL 2010 Audit: Anti-Semitic incidents increase in Florida According to the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL’s) Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents, there were 116 incidents of anti-Semitism reported to ADL in Florida in 2010 compared to 90 reported incidents of anti-Semitism in 2009. The increase of anti-Semitic incidents in Florida in 2010 marks a notable shift from the levels of antiSemitism tracked by ADL’s Audit over the last few years. From 2006 – 2009, anti-Semitic incidents consistently dipped after peaking at 199 incidents in 2005. Nationally, ADL’s Audit reported 1, 239 incidents of antiSemitism, a slight increase from the 1, 211 incidents reported in 2009. The ADL Audit tracks incidents of vandalism, harassment and physical assaults against Jewish individuals, property and community institutions based upon data and reports collected by ADL’s Florida office and law enforcement. In 2010, ADL’s Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents in Florida reported: • 86 incidents of anti-Semitic harassment • 28 cases of anti-Semitic vandalism • 2 physical assaults “Some of the trends that emerged in 2010 were an

increase in verbal and online harassment, the use of the swastika through graffiti, hate group activity, as well as a slight increase in anti-Semitic vandalism targeting Jewish institutions,” stated Andrew Rosenkranz, ADL Florida Regional Director. “ADL also fielded complaints concerning antiSemitic bullying incidents in schools as well as antiSemitism on college campuses throughout Florida.” Consistent with previous years, Florida was ranked fourth nationwide with the highest amount of reported anti-Semitic incidents, following California, New York and New Jersey – states that have large Jewish populations. “South Florida experienced nearly 70% of the antiSemitic incidents captured in ADL’s Audit,” stated Seth Gadinsky, ADL Florida Regional Chair. “This disproportionate statistic in the context of ADL’s statewide Audit is indicative of a combination of variables including demographics and a stronger awareness to report incidents to ADL. Tracking these trends assists ADL in determining how to best respond to and prevent incidents from taking place in the future, especially through ADL’s anti-bias education programs as well as partnerships with law enforcement.”
