mography, digital diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, computer aided detection, MRI guided biopsy, cyst aspiration and more. According to the National Cancer Institute, all women age 40 or older should have screening mammograms every one to two years. For every 1,000 women who have a screening mammogram: • 100 are recalled to get more ultrasound images • 20 are recommended for a biopsy • 5 are diagnosed with breast cancer “We are committed to ensuring that every patient fully understands her test results, which we aim to provide quickly and accurately,” said Dr. Ivy Salom, interpreting radiologist at the Mount Sinai Aventura diagnostic center. Screening mammography can help reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer among women ages 40 to 74. Risk factors for breast cancer include age, family history, genetic alterations, breast density, long-term use of menopausal hormone replacement therapy, radiation, alcohol use, low physical
activity levels and body weight. “The relationship between extra weight and breast cancer may have to do with the estrogen that fat cells are known to produce, or with impaired metabolism from the elevated insulin and growth factor levels, “said Dr. Elisa Krill-Jackson, oncologist who specializes in breast cancer. Should follow-up care be necessary, patients can take comfort in knowing that The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center has received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) - the only Florida hospital to receive this recognition three times in a row. And, at Mount Sinai, cancer patients receive a team of expert doctors who will customize their healthcare, as well as benefit from a wide range of collaborative support services such as nutritional counseling, psychological care, support groups and a resource center. David Levy Yulee – ‘The Florida Fire Eater’
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Moses Levy, an observant Jew, took great pride in 1845 when his son David was elected as America’s first Jewish U.S. Senator. It was short lived. It all started when Rachel Levy, a young English Jewess, was captured by Moroccan pirates and sold to a prominent Muslim named Jacoub ibn Youli, who added her to his harem. A pregnant Rachel escaped and fled to England in 1781, where she gave birth to a son, Moses Levy. Moses married a Jewish woman and in 1810, they had a son David, Florida’s future Senator. Moses brought his family to America and purchased 50,000 acres of land near Jacksonville, Florida, intending to create a homeland for Jewish settlers fleeing oppression. His Zionistic vision failed; however, he became a successful businessman and spoke out in favor of emancipating and educating slaves to achieve equality. David chose politics and became a delegate to Congress. Nick-named the “Fire
Eater” for his passionate oratory, David, in 1845, successfully fought to bring Florida into the Union. In 1846, U.S. Senator David Levy married Nannie C. Wickliffe, who, unhappy with David’s religion, did not want to be known as Mrs. Levy. According to the American Jewish Historical Society, David Levy then assumed the name Yulee, an approximation of the name of his Muslim grandfather and also agreed to raise their children Christian. Moses, distraught over David’s denigration of their family heritage, was also displeased with David’s political views, namely, his advocacy of slave ownership rights and his belief that black’s constituted an inferior race. David rejected his father’s views, renounced Judaism and became a devout Christian. David, defeated in his Senate re-election in 1851, was re-elected in 1855. He favored secession, resigned his Senate seat in 1861 and joined the Confederate Congress during the Civil War. After the war, Yulee promoted construction of Florida’s cross-state railroad and was called the “Father of Florida’s railroads.” Ironically, Levy County and the City of Yulee in Nassau County were both named after David, however, Moses “proved a visionary in predicting that Florida would one day make an excellent home for Diaspora Jews.”

On Tuesday, October 15th at 8 p.m., lovers of musical oldies can enjoy the sounds of Jay and the Americans at Mardi Gras Casino performing live in the Grandstand followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Diabetes Management and Prevention
Dr. Leila Chaychi MOUNT SINAI HEALTH CORNER According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every ten Florida residents has diabetes, and as many as one in three adults could have diabetes by the year 2050. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. However, unlike Type 1 diabetes where the body is incapable of producing any insulin, Type 2 diabetes is reversible and can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. More than half of all type 2 diabetes cases could be controlled without insulin treatments by taking the necessary steps to reduce unhealthy, excessive body weight. Mount Sinai’s endocrinology team monitors lifestyle choices to help recommend dietary changes that are focused on healthy weight loss coupled with increasing the level of regular exercise. This combination of medical intervention and guidance can help patients lower their blood-glucose levels and avoid many of the severe health complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol, and high blood glucose. Individuals with diabetes are twice as likely to suffer from heart attacks and strokes, as well. Type 2 diabetes can also increase the risk
for certain types of cancer, according to a consensus report from the American Diabetes Association and the American Cancer Society. Diabetes doubles the risk for developing liver, pancreatic, or endometrial cancer. Some risk factors for diabetes that can’t be modified include age, family history and race/ethnicity. People over 40 are at an increased risk for developing diabetes. If you have a close relative who has diabetes, your increased risk may be due to a combination of shared genes and/or lifestyle factors. And, type 2 diabetes is more common in Hispanics African Americans, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders. Risk factors that can be modified include diet, weight and physical activity, as previously mentioned, but also smoking and alcohol consumption. Smoking can increase blood sugar levels and decrease the body’s ability to use insulin. It can also change the way the body stores excess fat, increasing fat around the waist, which is linked to diabetes. Alcohol is processed in the body very similarly to the way fat is processed, and alcohol provides almost as many calories. Therefore, drinking alcohol in people with diabetes can cause your blood sugar to rise. If you choose to drink alcohol, only drink it occasionally and when your diabetes and blood sugar level are well-controlled. Dr. Leila Chaychi is Mount Sinai Medical Center’s newest endocrinologist. Dr. Chaychi sees patients at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Mount Sinai Aventura’s multi-specialty physician office and Mount Sinai Primary & Specialty Care Coral Gables. Gardening: A Bridge for the ‘Generation Gap’ Gardening brings people together. The joy of gardening extends across all the stages of life, and the innate serenity and beauty of a Garden provides common ground for all generations. We grew up in a different world, a world where we knew where our food came from and people made a living from their practical skills. Sewing clothes, building homes, and growing food was more than just a hobby or vocation, it was part and parcel to how we lived. We experienced the tremendous value of our “victory gardens” and were always grateful for the providence of our labors. For better or worse, this technocratic modern age has disconnected the generation of our grandchildren from the reality of where their food comes from. They seem to be perpetually glued to some electronic device or computer screen and their lack of interest in the outdoors is becoming problematic for us all. They need someone older and wiser to show them the simple joy of working in the ground, working with their hands, and experiencing the fruits of their honest labor. It is a highly valuable activity for all of us. We are, of course, thrilled to be having fun and spending quality time with our loved ones, and they will be given a

Florida Healthcare Plus, What you should know about Breast Cancer the service you want Breast cancer is the No. 1 cancer diagnosed in women. Breast cancer is a predator among women today, but you can fight back with knowledge and awareness. It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so don’t wait another day to get your facts straight and start protecting your breasts and your life.
BY LEE STEPHENS
Florida Healthcare Plus (FHCP) is among the most successful and innovative managed care companies in the state. With a focus on quality customer service, cost-effectiveness and “grassroots” relationships with Primary Care Physicians, FHCP continues to expand its presence in the Florida healthcare arena. FHCP started out in 2004 as a pre-paid health plan, addressing the needs of lower income families. Today, they are a licensed Florida HMO (health maintenance organization) with branches in major population areas such as Miami, West Palm Beach, Orlando and Tampa. By January 2014, their participating networks will be available in 16 counties throughout the state. At the heart of FHCP’s success is their mission to limit costs and placing the proper emphasis on preventative care. “Preventative care is key and it is the future of healthcare,” said Abe Rodriguez, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for FHCP. “The goal should be to keep people healthy. This philosophy is evident in the extent of the services we provide to our members and in the caliber of physicians in our network.” The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been phasing into the healthcare system since 2010 and is planned to be fully implemented by next year. The Act promotes prevention, wellness for public health and provides funding commitment to these areas. A healthier population will actually reduce the cost of healthcare and improve the population’s quality of life and productivity. This strategy of national prevention and health promotion also improves the delivery of healthcare to constituencies that were often denied coverage by insurers or dropped by an insurer once a substantial claim was made. For practitioners and healthcare institutions, the ACA requires greater transparency and accountability than ever before. In this regard and others, FHCP is a “fantastic fit” for the ACA, according to Abe Rodriguez. Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) who are providers with FHCP have the opportunity to get their practice in line with the new regulations. Increased accountability calls for greater monitoring of preventative care via electronic health records. Physicians, PCPs will need IT capabilities that allow them to maintain and file detailed reports properly. FHCP will provide solutions to their participating providers and assist them with the reporting requirements via electronic patient files (EMR/EHR) while ensuring that they are reporting on a timely-basis as the physicians maintain high scores with preventive care.
Abe Rodriguez, vice president of sales and marketing for Florida Healthcare Plus –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
FHCP takes great pride in the way it conducts business. “We believe in doing it the old fashioned way—one handshake at a time,” said Abe Rodriguez. It has proven to be just the right way to increase business. The personal touch extends to every prospective provider and every prospective patient. FHCP limits costs and practices prevention to such an extent that this relatively small company can invest the savings into benefits instead of rewarding a large group of stockholders. These benefits include an over the counter debit card that is recharged in $100 increments every month. The member can use the card at select locations to purchase over 25,000 health-related products, from aspirin to blood pressure cuffs. Another is FHCP’s unlimited transportation service for members, offered free of charge. The company has purchased its own fleet of comfortable Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, operated by drivers trained and employed by FHCP. A free gym membership is offered to all members. To find out about becoming an FHCP provider or to enroll in Medicare or Medicaid-based programs, contact FHCP at 1-855-431-1609 or visit them at their website at <www.floridahealthcareplus>.
Risk Factors Who can get breast cancer? No one has guaranteed immunity to this disease— young women, and even men, have been diagnosed with breast cancer — but some women are at a greater risk than others. Your chances may be higher if one or more of these statements is true: • You’re older than 55. • You have a personal history of cancer. • You have a family history of breast cancer. • You have been exposed to radiation. • You had your first pregnancy later in life or have never been pregnant. • You experienced menopause after 55. • You have undergone hormone replacement therapy. If you are at a high risk, talk with your doctor about what preventive measures are appropriate for you.
make sure early detection is possible! Learn how to do a self-exam. The American Cancer Society recommends that your healthcare provider perform a clinical breast exam every year for all women. A breast self-exam should be done each month by all women. Annual mammogram is recommended starting at age 40. Some women with certain risk factors may need to start their screening mammograms earlier. Talk with your doctor about when to begin mammograms and how often to schedule them. Consult your doctor right away if you ever notice Any changes in your breasts, such as a lump, discoloration or dimpling of the skin, or a change in the shape of your nipple. Stacy D. Plaza at Pembroke Park The Plaza at Pembroke Park is a beautiful 120 bed assisted living community, situated right off Hallandale Beach Boulevard in the small city of Pembroke Park. The Plaza is the only ALF in the area with a fully supervised kosher kitchen, providing a wonderful array of traditional and more modern cuisine for those seeking to maintain an orthodox Jewish lifestyle. We also offer a regular menu prepared in a separate kitchen for residents with more secular tastes. The Plaza offers round the clock licensed nursing care for residents in the regular assisted living as well as those with special needs lovingly cared for in Central Park, our secure memory care unit. We provide care for residents based on individual needs, our goal always is to encourage and maintain our residents independence for as long as possible. The Plaza boasts an Extended Congregate Care license, one of only two communities in the area. This allows us to
care for residents if their needs increase beyond the level of a standard license. This enables residents to enjoy a continuum of care allowing them to age in place, preventing the need for the trauma of a move if health deteriorates. Socializing is one of the most important aspects of the care we provide. An active stimulated mind enhances physical health and well being and our trained activity staff have developed a balanced program designed to engage residents of all abilities. We also provide a separate program for Central Park run by our specially trained staff. We would love the opportunity to show off the more than half a million dollars worth of renovations that have been carried out over the past 18 months, so please call our Community Sales Leader Howard Brown at 954-961-8111 or e-mail him at howard.m.brown@holidaytouch.com. Vi at Aventura was a witness to history Rabbi Seymour Friedman remembers Rabbinical Delegation to Birmingham that met with Reverend Martin Luther King 50 years ago BY MARJORIE ALONI It took place 50 years ago, but the memory of the event and its importance is still vivid in Rabbi Seymour “Sy” Friedman’s mind. Rabbi Friedman was one of a contingent of 19 rabbis from the Northeast U.S. who flew to Birmingham, AL in May 1963 to show support for the injustices suffered by African Americans. Rabbi Friedman is a resident of Vi at Aventura, a continuing care retirement community where he has lived for more than 10 years with his wife Devora. He continues to lead and participate in religious services at the community. The four-day rabbinical mission to Birmingham predates the historic March on Washington which is being celebrate across the country. In fact, the Birmingham mission thrust the religious leaders into the throes of the civil rights movement and created a personal connection to Reverend Martin Luther King. Four month before the famous
Rabbi Seymour “Syd” Friedman –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Washington March, rabbinical leaders from the New York area made a resolution to send a delegation to Birmingham. The Jewish Theological Seminary met and posed a question about how spiritual leaders “could be concerned only with Nazi cruelty when acts of injustice to fellow human beings were taking place in our country.” The rabbis flew to Birmingham and visited numerous African American churches and demonstrated support by meeting and singing with parishioners. As Rabbi Friedman explained, “We all felt it was the right thing to do. In the Jewish faith we believe it is about dignity of the human individual.” In recalling the visit Rabbi Friedman said: “We were participants in their church services and my job was to lead the parishioners in singing. We even taught them an ancient Hebrew hymn.” The rabbis also met with Reverend Martin Luther King who had recently been released from a Birmingham jail. “King was a very inspiring, charismatic man,” said
Rabbi Friedman. “I don’t believe there are many people alive today who met with King on such a personal level.” About Rabbi Friedman, Vi at Aventura Executive Director James Edwartoski said: “He has spent his entire life educating and mentoring people both inside and outside his faith. His early involvement in the civil rights movement is a perfect example of the caring individual that he is. He certainly was way ahead of his time when he went to Birmingham.” About Vi Vi (pronounced vee), recently celebrated its 25th anniversary as a developer, owner and operator of senior living communities. The company is dedicated to enriching the lives of older adults by providing quality environments, services and care. Vi currently operates ten continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) nationwide. For more information about Vi Aventura on West Country Club Drive, call 305-692-4829 or visit www.ViLiving.com

AT&T urges Aventura Mall visitors to take pledge against texting while driving No text is worth dying for. That’s what AT&T hopes drivers took away from their experience with two texting and driving simulators in the center court at the Aventura Mall. The simulator event was part of national Drive 4 Pledges Day held on September 19. Drive 4 Pledges Day and the AT&T simulators are part of It Can Wait, a campaign launched by AT&T in 2010 to address the dangers of texting while driving and save lives. The It Can Wait initiative has become a movement, garnering support from 200+ organizations. Clad in “Texting and Driving...It Can Wait” T-shirts and handing out “No Text on
Board” bumper stickers, employees from the AT&T kiosk inside the mall encouraged visitors to take the pledge to never text and drive, and to ask their friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to do the same. Visitors were also encouraged to try out the wheel and pedal simulators to experience first-hand the dangers of texting behind the wheel. The AT&T team collected 300 notexting-while-driving pledges during the 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. event! To date, more than 3 million no-textingwhile-driving pledges have been made nationwide through ItCanWait.com, social sites like Facebook and at simulator events nationwide.

Sporty JUKE NISMO CUV joins 2013 Nissan lineup Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Just in case you haven’t heard about it yet, NISMO is derived from NISsan MOtorsports and the company is developing sports-oriented vehicles all across its product line and tagging them with the moniker. One of the latest is the new 2013 JUKE NISMO model. The JUKE NISMO has a racetrack-derived design, enhanced performance and road-hugging handling. It gives JUKE buyers a distinct choice in a crossover lineup that includes the affordable S, the well-equipped SV and the premium SL. Two configurations — front-wheel drive with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive with sport-tuned Xtronic CVT — are available and there are almost 100 separate performance, exterior and interior modifications available for the JUKE. The modifications to the JUKE exterior are designed to enhance the vehicle’s aerodynamics, resulting in a 37-percent improvement in downforce (versus non-NISMO models). Many of the aggressive sports-cross
styling elements were influenced by NISMO’s motorsport expertise, in particular using lessons learned from the styling and engineering of the Nissan GT-R racers that compete in the Super GT series in Japan. Compared to the standard Nissan JUKE, the most obvious visual change is to the front fascia and grille, which have been modified to better control airflow to the engine. The new front end has a lower and more aggressive design, while the integrated fog lights have been replaced by thin-strip LED accent lights positioned at the top edge of new small vents to the side of the larger grille. On front-wheel drive versions these are blanked, but on all-wheel drive models the left-hand side vent allows air into the engine bay for the CVT oil cooler, and the righthand vent is styled to match. The prominent upper edge of the large lower grille features a red pinstripe that curves around the smaller vents and continues to the front wheel arches. This distinctive NISMO cue gives the nose a visual width and presence while emphasizing the athletic stance. The signature Nissan V-strut grille is finished in a darker shade and the distinctive JUKE combination lights are smoked as part of the NISMO appearance treatment. Also part of the JUKE NISMO exterior look are new 18-inch lightweight aluminum-

alloy wheels with 225/45R18 Continental ContiSportContact5 summer tires, which help give additional grip during cornering. One inch larger than the standard JUKE wheels, the diamond-cut alloys have a 10 twin-spoke design and are finished in dark anthracite. The JUKE NISMO is available in three exterior colors — Sapphire Black, Brilliant Silver and Pearl White. All come equipped
with red outside door mirrors and the matching pinstripe around base of the vehicle. The MSRP on the Nissan JUKE NISMO is $23,780 and $26,080 with the CVT. to those who are over 55,” says Laurie Hoffman Associate Executive Director of the Humane Society of Greater Miami.
