These ATMs, now in every Wachovia banking store, have saved 560 tons of paper – the equivalent of more than 100,000 trees worldwide. Aventura Mayor Susan Gottlieb and Commissioners Billy Joel, Bob Diamond, Teri Holzberg, Zev Auerbach, Vice Mayor Michael Stern and City Manager Eric Soroka helped cut the ribbon on the new Wachovia banking store as Beth Lyon presented the $25,000 donation to the City of Aventura for the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. “This landmark theater will provide a wide range of cultural and educational opportunities for all age groups, all ethnicities, all of our residents and neighbors to enjoy,” Gottlieb said. Maybe it’s you
Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Are things always going wrong in your life? Are bad things always happening to you? Did you ever stop to think that it might be you? You might be the cause of all of your misfortunes. Some people are quick to blame others for every thing negative that happens to them. They are always the innocent victims. They are preyed upon, picked on and taken advantage of. They are martyrs full of suffering and woe. A victim is always the injured party. A victim does not see how they actually cause their own bad luck. It may sound sad to be a victim but there are definitely some rewards. The individual can manipulate others and exert a lot of control over them. They become the good person and everyone else is bad. They feel blameless about everything and feel everyone else is to
blame. People offer them sympathy and extra support. People are also afraid to upset them and add to their burdens. Victims actually enjoy being the victim. It is a role they usually do not want to relinquish. However, you can stop being the victim if you want. You can stop bad things from happening in your life and you can make things go smoothly. It takes a very mature person to want to change the way they see the world and the way they interact with the world. If you want things to be better then you have to take responsibility for the situations, relationships and events that happen in your life. You have to accept the fact that you might be the cause of all of your calamities. You have to acknowledge that you have control over what happens to you. If you do not accept responsibility and if you do not recognize the control that you have, then you cannot change anything. If you want your life to be better then it is vital to accept the part that you might play in your own life. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. ‘New and improved’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY Every day around town in Aventura, something “new and improved” seems to keep popping up. Here are just some of the novel attractions everyone’s talking about: Remodeled Starbucks: After desperately trying to find another Starbucks to go to while the one on 191st was being remodeled, caffeine junkies are thrilled their favorite hangout is open again…and now that the new interior décor features a super long table, many have already started asking if they can reserve it and bring the whole family for Thanksgiving dinner! New Olive Garden: Many people are still wondering how the brand new Olive Garden on Biscayne could have been built so fast considering it can sometimes take forever to just get permits pulled…Rumor has it the process might have been expedited in return for endless bowls of pasta. Groceries at Target: Now that Aventura’s Target store is adding groceries, it’s great
news for customers who will appreciate the convenience of being able to shop for virtually everything they need in just one store…Let’s just hope no one gets confused between apples and Apple iPods; pineapples and Pinesol; dressings and dresses; or Fruit Loops and Fruit of the Loom. Aventura Arts & Cultural Center: The community is welcoming the new Aventura Arts & Cultural Center – a fantastic venue for diverse forms of entertainment. The city recently built a Cultural Center monument sign flashing upcoming events – but even though it was placed at the corner of 188th Street, there’s still a lot of people relying on their nav systems to figure out where the heck it is! New Rule: You may have noticed Aventura Mall has posted signs that minors have to be accompanied by adults after 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays – but why don’t the signs say anything about who has to watch the grownups? After all, we all know they often behave just like kids! Newly Re-Elected: On Nov. 2, voters will go to the polls - but if all candidates were as great as the ones we have here in Aventura, there might never even be a need for elections given the entire City Commission was recently re-elected unopposed.

2010 AIPAC National Summit arrives in Hollywood Political leaders, international diplomats and hundreds of proIsrael Americans will converge on South Florida this weekend for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s (AIPAC) 2010 National Summit on Foreign Policy and Politics. Widely recognized as one of America’s most exclusive annual foreign policy events, the two-day conference will include keynote addresses by top American, Israeli and international policymakers, including State Department official Dennis Ross, Israeli Minister of Defense Ehud Barak and former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar. Members of the United States House of Representatives, the United States Senate, as well as all three Florida Senate candidates are expected to stress their strong, bipartisan support for the U.S.-Israel relationship and reaffirm American commitment to stopping Iran’s illicit nuclear drive and the need to stand solidly by Israel in its quest for peace. “At a time of unprecedented challenge and opportunity
for America’s ally in the Middle East, the Summit is a resounding show of strong support for the U.S.-Israel relationship,” said AIPAC’s Miami Executive Council Chair Hon. Amy Dean. Nearly 1,000 pro-Israel advocates are expected to attend the Summit—an exclusive retreat reserved for AIPAC club members who donate more than $3,600
annually. The event, which will run from October 24-25 in Hollywood, will feature speeches and top-level panel discussions with some of the nation’s leading policymakers and experts on the Middle East. In addition to the hundreds of participants from all across the country, more than 150 students from area colleges and universities will also attend the events. Summit delegates will choose from dozens of panel discussions and town hall forums that address a wide array of issues concerning the U.S.-Israel relationship. Forum topics include Israel’s security challenges, Syria and Iran’s role in fostering instability in the Middle East, Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear bomb, and the future of Israeli-Palestinian relations. The Summit will conclude Monday evening, with a special community-wide event featuring briefings by senior AIPAC staff. Dedicated to South Florida’s pro-Israel community, the event is $20 and is open to all. Reservations are required to attend, call 954-382-6110 or visit www.aipac.org/FLSummit.
Motherhood the Musical arrives to Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova Motherhood the Musical is the brandnew, hilarious and poignant 90-minute musical that will take you on a journey through the lives of four women as they make their way through the blessings and perils of Motherhood at any age. The musical “delivers” side-splitting and moving performances at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center at Nova Southeastern University’s Davie Campus. Featuring a cast of South Florida’s favorite actresses, the show opens at a baby shower for Amy, played by Lisa Manuli, the naive 20-something who is about to deliver her first child. Amy gets an earful about motherhood, including the good, the bad and the ugly; the diapers, the dirty laundry and the sleepless nights from her three more experienced girlfriends. Barb, played by Laura Turnbull, is the over-worked, underpaid mother of five. Brooke, played by Margot Moreland, is the lawyer who works too much and doesn’t spend enough time with her kids. And Tasha, played by Kareema Khouri, is the single mom who’s struggling to juggle it all. The musical features 18 original songs written or co-writ-
ten by Sue Fabisch, the #1 hit songwriter in Nashville, TN, and Billboard Magazine Top 10 Comedy Artist, who also wrote the play. Fabisch wrote the songs to amuse herself as she made her own way through the trials of motherhood. They include “Welcome to Motherhood,” “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy,” “Minivan,” “Costco Queen,” “I Leak,” “Baby
Weight Blues,” and the #1 hit “The Kids are Finally Asleep.” Producer Kathi Glist with GFour Productions fell in love with the project and decided to bring it to her home town to debut. “When Motherhood the Musical crossed my desk, it spoke to me! It resonated within my heart and deeply in my soul. I knew very quickly that it would do the same for audiences.” And Kathi knows from where she speaks, GFour is also the producer of the international smash hit Menopause The Musical that has been seen by millions on multiple continents. Motherhood the Musical is about climbing the emotional mountain only to find that there’s laundry at the top. It’s discovering how powerful your love can be and how quickly kids grow up. It’s helping them find their way and not losing yours. It’s about laughing and crying, craziness and calm, smiles and tears . . . and all before breakfast. It will tickle your funny bone and pull at your heart strings. Tickets start at just $29.50 and include parking. To purchase tickets, call 954-462-0222 or visit BrowardCenter.org or MotherhoodtheMusical.com

Are artists born or made? BY CARI COHEN
You will be surprised if I tell you how many people come to my Studio saying, “I always like to paint, but I believe that I am not talented enough. I would like to give it a try…” This got me thinking, are artist born or made? What happens when we love something, but supposedly we are not so good at it? Without a doubt, there are those who are born gifted with innate talent, those that can play a song on the guitar naturally, without the aid of a music sheet, and some people may be natural born painters. On the other hand, though, we could also say that artists are made. There’s no question that people can learn to paint, or play the piano, since those are skills that we can see people acquire. Sometimes career or hobbies are chosen just because we are skilled in a specific area, leaving behind what really moves us. When this happens, the result could be that we’ll grow tired of it eventually. If something really ignites a passion in us,
what can’t be missing is, “the fire in the belly.” Our heart has to be in whatever we do. My suggestion for the ones who think that they don’t have the “necessary talent” to paint is to realize that the most valuable attributes are desire and passion. Art is an activity that connects you with your most inner soul. The more relaxed you are, the more creativity will flow. Once you stop setting up expectations and worries about creating a masterpiece for your living room, you will have a better time and more importantly, you will enjoy the moment and really have fun. Taking on a forgotten activity, letting your energy flow, or just enjoying the learning process are enough sources of motivation to get you going and make art worth a try. Marc Chagall wrote,” If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from head, almost nothing.” Do what you love, Love what you do! Cari Cohen. On Tuesday, October 5th, Aventura Hospital and Medical Center and the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted a special reception in the hospital’s main lobby and mezzanine.
AHMC’s CEO Heather Rohan commenced the program by welcoming guests and stressing the importance of early detection. “The American Cancer Society predicts that in 2010, some 207,000 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer,” she stated. “The good news is that if breast cancer is caught early, the five-year survival rate is 96 percent. The death rate continues to decrease in the U.S. because of improved treatments, preventive measures, and increased mammography screenings rates.” A brave survivor, Maritza Lewin, shared a testimonial of her own personal triumphs in overcoming breast cancer. “Attitude is everything. It can help you survive. One can never give up,” said Lewin. “Make sure to get out of bed every day and do not forget to appreciate life more.” “I know breast cancer first hand,” said Annette Watt, director of radiology services at Aventura Hospital. “It became very personal for me six years ago when I was diagnosed. I am now blessed with an ability to empathize with patients, and I hope my story will encourage more women to get their mammography screenings early, as I did.” Patient care involves comforting the mind and spirit as Aventura Hospital Chief of Staff Dr. Charles Shenker; Harriette Brotman carrying Cali; Aventura Hospital CEO well as treating the disease. Heather Rohan; Maritza Lewin, survivor; Aventura Mayor For that reason, therapy dogs Susan Gottlieb; Sunny Isles Beach Comm. Gerry from the International Delta Goodman; Annette Watt, director of radiology services Society and the Humane and survivor; Dr. Berta Rios, American Cancer Society
Center made a special appearance during the evening, sporting their own pink outfits in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Aventura Hospital’s therapy dogs are specially trained volunteers who visit with patients with their handlers. These caring animals have undergone special evaluations to be eligible to visit and spread joy to patients and their families. Aventura Mayor Susan Gottlieb and Sunny Isle Beach Comm. Gerry Goodman, North Miami City Manager Russell Benford each attended the special program and presented proclamations on behalf of their municipalities urging women everywhere to get the facts about breast cancer and to take proactive measures to reduce their risks of developing breast cancer. At the conclusion of the evening, Heather Rohan, Dr. Charles Shenker, Annette Watt and Maritza Lewin were joined by, North Miami City Manager Russell Benford and Comm. Gerry Goodman for a special ribbon cutting ceremony in front of Aventura Hospital’s main fountain. As the pink ribbon was cut, the fountain sprang to life with pink water. Guests were then invited out to the front of the hospital where they witnessed that the entire building was bathed in pink lights. Aventura Hospital will remain pink for the entire month of October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Aventura Hospital hosts Community Yard Sale The Aventura Circle is a hospital-wide charitable effort on the part of the Aventura Hospital staff to help those less fortunate in our community. The title “Circle” serves as an acronym for the team’s motto: Community Involvement Requires Concerned Loving Employees. Each month, the Aventura Circle donates supplies and raises funds for local non-for-profit organizations that benefit poor, needy and homeless residents of all age in Miami-Dade County. On Saturday, October 23rd from 6:30 a.m. to 12 noon p.m., the Aventura Circle will be hosting a large community yard sale to benefit HCA Healthcare’s Hope Fund initiative, an employee-run, employee-supported charity founded to provide emergency support to HCA employees and their imme-
diate families who have been affected by hardships such as natural disasters and extended illnesses or injuries. The HCA Hope Fund has provided more than $10.5 million in financial support to employees across the United States since its inception five years ago. At Aventura Hospital alone, more than 110 employees have received emergency financial assistance from the HCA Hope Fund, totaling more than $80,000. Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH Is the job market improving as the year comes to an end? The pace of layoffs nationwide may be slowing down as 2010 winds down. Right now, there are signs of improved holiday hiring around South Florida and local employment experts say they are seeing growth around the South Florida job market. Companies may be back in the mood to hire because recent signs have indicated that consumers are back to spending. The latest sales figures from some of the country’s biggest retailers show improvements through September. New unemployment claims are dropping overall. Some analysts think this is another sign that layoffs may have peaked and companies are ready to start hiring again. Local employment experts say they expect the pace of hiring to improve through the end of the fourth quarter. I recently spoke to a local who visited Nova University’s employment fair and told me that she is feeling better after seeing two dozen companies looking for new employees. The currently unemployed business manager says, “I’m always a really optimistic person and I’m really excited and ready to get back to work.” If you’re looking for a job, UPS just announced that it’s looking for 50,000 seasonal workers nationwide to handle the
expected increase in demand for holiday shipping. Their part-time jobs typically start at $8.50 an hour. If retail is more your thing, Bloomingdales is interviewing potential candidates for its new outlet store opening next month at Sawgrass Mills mall. Several Macy’s locations throughout South Florida also are hiring to fill nearly 900 openings and those jobs pay between $8 and $60 an hour. Typically, many part-time positions give job seekers a foot in the door toward fulltime work. While nobody knows how long these new jobs will last, they are expected to make the 2010 holiday season look a lot better than last year. Here are some helpful tips for getting that seasonal job you’re looking for: • Don’t procrastinate; start looking for jobs before the holidays are here. • Try to take advantage of family or friend connections to get your foot in the door. • Dress to impress for an interview because positive first impressions really do make a difference. • Look for jobs at big retail stores that always do well during the holidays. • Be prepared to sacrifice some weekends or work longer hours to do a good job. Although these tips won’t ensure you hook the job, they could help you stand out among the many people who are looking for temporary work this season. With the pace of hiring improving and more jobs opening throughout the fourth quarter, you don’t want to be overlooked. Watch Al Sunshine’s “CBS Money Watch” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon.

Chevy Volt coming to Miami for public test drive Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS General Motors will bring the much-anticipated Chevrolet Volt to Miami next week as part of a 3,400-mile, cross-country drive to showcase the company’s first electric vehicle with extended-range capability. The tour has been dubbed “Volt Unplugged” and Miami consumers get an opportunity on Oct. 28 and 29 to test drive the Volt, meet the people behind the development of the vehicles — Chevrolet engineers, designers and others — and participate in activities. Volt test cars will be parked in front of Miami City Hall, 3500 Pan American Dr., and available for test drives from 7 to 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29. GM officials say people are welcome to come by and test drive the cars. City of Miami commissioners and the mayor have been invited to attend. Later, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Volts will be at the Florida International University South Campus, 11200 SW Eighth St., where
they again will be available for test drives. Activity at FIU will be staged between the Gold and Blue parking lots at the end of the main driveway on the South Campus. Other South Florida activities for Oct. 30 were in the planning stages and could not be confirmed at press time. They included test drives at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, test drives with the Florida Electric Auto Association and a visit to Miami’s Terra Environmental Research Institute High School. “The Volt Unplugged tour gives people a chance to get behind the wheel of the Volt and find out for themselves what makes this vehicle so special,” said Tony DiSalle, Volt product and marketing director. “This drive will demonstrate the one-of-a-kind capabilities of the Volt, the only electric vehicle able to drive such long distances under a variety of driving conditions and climates without having to stop to recharge.” On a fully charged battery and a tank of gas, the Volt has a driving range of about 400 of miles. Because the Volt can use gasoline to create its own electricity in the extendedrange mode, long trips are possible. The Volt is powered only from electricity stored in its 16-kwh lithium-ion battery for a typical range of 25 to 50 miles depending on terrain, driving technique, temperature and battery age. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas

I have some startling news about our students. Only fifty percent of students rank in the top half of students in school. Fifty percent of students rank in the bottom half of a class based on grade average, FCAT score, or any other measurement used for ranking. No matter what criteria set by legislators, bureaucrats, or test vendors, the fact doesn’t change that when you rank groups, one half is the top half and one half is the bottom. That is what ranking does. It makes a line and divides the line where chosen. Top quarter? Draw the line here. Top ten? Over there. Whether we discuss pajamas, hamburger buns, or students, there is a top half and a bottom half! It’s time for a reality check about the often harmful conclusions drawn about students, teachers, and school systems in the name of concepts like opportunity, success, and being at the Top. Although it is surely desirable to want the best for education and for our children, we also need to be careful as we pursue such a “race.” Damage can be done to real people – many of them young children— when human beings are described in pejorative terms because they are not at the Top. Schools serve all children, no matter where they rank, and provisions for an appropriate education must be given to those children, no matter where they rank. It is not a question of jettisoning students at the bottom, but providing for their needs to maximize their potential and direction. Parents of more than one child know that each child is different,
with different strengths and weaknesses. One shines in math, the other is a poet, the third an average student with a sunny disposition. How do we determine which child is really at the Top? Can test scores prove this? A race should also not mean that we demean competent teachers, who, like their students, comprise a top half and a bottom half when ranked; instead we should establish evaluation systems that provide direction and support, and fair compensation, with adequate base salaries. One teacher works with the gifted, the other with special education students, the third with incarcerated juveniles. Which teacher is going to be at the Top? The one whose students have the highest test scores? I strongly believe that we must stop characterizing education as a competition, for it is the wrong type of dialogue, and it harms more than it helps. If anything, great education systems are about cooperation. Individual students, groups, and teams will still compete, and will still be ranked. But the daily reality of the highly competitive model is that it creates an atmosphere of counterproductive tension: the threat that someone is doing better than the students and the teachers at that school, that for fear of this, the school day must be run with minute-to-minute, scripted interactions, that teachers must deliver that script “with fidelity” or be terminated, or that students must sacrifice any other aspect of education (such as art or physical education!) if they are in the bottom half of the rank order. None of this puts anyone at the Top. United Teachers of Dade remains committed to real reform in our schools. Real reform centers around better understanding of the human brain and of the learning process, appropriate and positive relationships between administration, staff, students and teachers, and the time to pace lessons as determined by teachers so that each student moves forward. It is not a race to be won by a single winner, but a ship that enters a harbor having crossed the ocean with all hands still safely on board. But you know that. I can tell - you were the top of your class! The United Teachers of Dade represents 38,000 teachers and school support personnel in MDCPS. The union is committed to being a leader in creating public school reform, fostering a quality public education for all students and elevating the professional status of teachers, paraprofessionals, office employees, and all school support personnel.
