Aventura Marketing Council coordinates “jumbo networker” for 4th Annual Hard Rock Café Talent Show-Down
he fourth year proved to be the best yet as seven organizations networked together at the Hard Rock Café –Miami recently, with each one bringing their best singer to compete in the “Hard Rock Café Talent Show-Down!” With a “Christmas in September” theme, sales manager Gonzalo del Rio, organized the most delicious holiday dinner, complete with a glittering Christmas tree, in their private party room, while the delicious hors d’oeuvres were being passed around by the energetic and enthusiastic team members from the Hard Rock Café. “It’s always an honor to host this event,” said del Rio, “and each year, the party is bigger and better and the singers are more talented!” Blue Bell Ice Cream was there once again with Brendon Pilkenton and Leo Gomez serving up their famous flavors to an appreciative crowd as Stuart Whalan, owner/chef of Avant-Garde Cakes & Sweets provided tantalizing baked sweets for everyone. Henry Menendez from HNO Productions provided all the sound and the disc jockey for the evening’s program while CPA Craig Rogoff from Melnick Lilienfeld & Castonguay served as the official tabulator and photographer Juan Saco Miranoff captured the images throughout this exciting evening. Standing in for del Rio the night of the event was operations manager Gideon Horowitz, who joined the ever-popular Emcee George Neary from the Gr. Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) onstage to welcome everyone. Over 300 businesspeople,

members of the Aventura Marketing Council, Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, Greater North Miami Beach Chamber, Miami Beach Chamber, Miami-Dade Chamber, Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber and the South Florida Hispanic Chamber, came to network, cheer on their group’s singer, and help support the Breast Cancer Foundation represented by Sandy Mueller. And cheer they did as Emcee George Neary, Vice President of Cultural Tourism, GMCVB, introduced the panel of celebrity judges including Aventura Comm. Billy Joel, Scott Shiller, EVP of the Adrienne Arsht Center; Richard Rey, founding member of the rock band, O.V.R.H.O.L.; Karen Brown, distinguished hospitality veteran and co-emcee for the Miami Beach Gay Pride; Latoya Williams, Community Relations Dir. for the Orange Bowl Committee; Pati Vargas, co-ordinator for the popular Viernes Culturales and Yona Lunger, songwriter and producer. A very special guest was 16 year-old Nick Merico, winner of the talent show-down in 2010, who has since gone on to recording fame...and has over 7 million hits on Youtube! The singers were all great...performing with great stage presence and vocals: Tasha Guida, representing the Miami Beach
her the Runner-up award; Luz Weinberg, an Aventura Commissioner representing the South Florida Hispanic Chamber, sang “Proud Mary,”; and Cameron Wheeler, representing the Aventura Marketing Council, won First Place with her version of “I Am Telling You.” All the singers received wonderful prizes, and the Runner-up and Winner received additional gifts. The organization that brought in the winning singer was given $500 for their favorite charity. The evening was memorable, new friendships were made, old friendships were renewed and after congratulations and thanks went out to everyone, the question was asked, “When is next year’s Hard Rock Café Talent Show-Down?” For more information on Hard Rock Café Miami, call 305-377-3110 or visit hardrock.com

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING A famous philosopher, known for his wisdom and advice, said it very simply, “Know thyself.” Let’s add to that statement and say know thyself and know what you need and want and what will make you happy. There are several techniques that you can use to learn more about yourself and your relationships. I created my “Postcard Technique”, to help you clarify your needs and desires and save you hours of introspection. This simple procedure will increase your fulfillment and satisfaction. It will help you eliminate painful mistakes and disappointments in your relationships. Buy some postcards and address each one to the various people in your life that you have a relationship with or wish to have a relationship with. Think about the message you want to write to that person. What do you want from them? “Dear so
and so, Wish you were…” then insert the phrase that best describes what you want or need from them. You do not have to mail the postcards. No one has to see them. They are to help you focus on what is important to you in that particular relationship. Your needs and wants may change over time especially as you grow and mature as a human being. So, don’t be afraid to write a new postcard at that time. Continue to monitor your wishes on your postcards. Relationships are not static and neither are you. What you might wish for at 20 is not the same as what you might wish for later on. Another helpful technique is to write a postcard to yourself. The one to yourself should focus on your goals for yourself. It should use the same format, “Dear…I wish you were…” Hopefully, this postcard will change more frequently than the ones for your family friends and associates. Every time you achieve one of the goals that you have written, write a new postcard to yourself. Be sure you sign it, “Love” and your name. That’s very important.

The two worlds of Lyndon B. Johnson
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS According to historian Robert A. Caro (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, The Passage of Power), “Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency (1963-1969) is arguably one of the greatest success stories of any president in American history, as well as one our worst failures.” With the assassination of Kennedy on November 22, 1963, Vice President Johnson assumed the presidency. He then caught the tide and momentum generated by Kennedy, together with his own unique talent and used it for purposes “Kennedy had enunciated for the passage of long-dreamed of liberal legislation whose purposes went far beyond any embodied in Kennedy legislation.” His great victories for legislation were “the embodiment of the liberal spirit in all its nobility.”His national approval rating was 77% in his victorious election over Goldwater in 1964. His accomplishments included The Civil Rights Act of 1964, The Voting Rights Act of 1965, Medicare and Medicaid, The Water Quality Act, The
Highway Safety Act, The Air Quality Act, The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, and his “War against Poverty.” Johnson will be remembered for the first part of his presidency with the words of the civil rights struggle, “We Shall Overcome.” According to Caro, “Unfortunately, the foregoing words were not the only words which Johnson will be remembered.” In the second part of his presidency, the prior choruses of the civil rights were replaced with words of the Vietnam protesters, “Hey! Hey! LBJ! How many kids did you kill today?” In the absence of a formal declaration of war, Johnson significantly escalated the U.S. role in Vietnam. Johnson’s presidential prestige disappeared, while the number of American, North and South Vietnamese soldiers and civilians, killed and wounded, may have exceeded two million. In 1967, antiwar rallies took place throughout the nation, while young men burned their draft cards in protest. Upon Johnson’s death in 1973, Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy said he preferred remembering Johnson, “As President, his brilliant leadership earned him a special place in the history of civil rights alongside of Abraham Lincoln.” In 1982, the Chicago Tribune’s poll of 49 historians ranked Johnson as our 12th greatest president.

Power and Poise: Similarities of Women and The Dragonfly
Julia Yarbough SEASON OF CHANGE
SISTERHOOD within the community. And where does the dragonfly come into all of this? Well, turns out women are a lot like dragonflies, constantly moving in all directions to keep ourselves and our families moving forward. Dragonflies have the ability to move in six directions, up to 45 miles an hour. Did you know the dragonfly uses almost 80% of its brainpower for sight - they can see in all 360 degrees around itself. Now if that doesn’t seem like an inherent skill of a woman - to juggle 50 million aspects of life at once and to always seem to know what’s happening with her career, her colleagues, her spouse, her children, her parents, her friends and even sometimes passer-byes in Publix... then I don’t know
Hardly a day goes by living here in South Florida that I am not amazed and in awe of the incredible creations put in front of us, thanks to Mother Nature. While I absolutely love the great outdoors, I’m not a big fan of creatures that creep and crawl, hop (like toads and frogs), or insects. I am close friends with my exterminator. However, I have a newfound appreciation for the dragonfly, thanks to a stellar group of women who devote a great deal of their time and energy to strengthen, uplift and empower others. This month I was proud and honored to serve as facilitator for the 2012 BB&T Dragonfly Darlings Women’s Conference, presented by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. I am truly blessed to be able to take part in such wonderful events! Women of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life gathered for the daylong event which focused on health and wellness, breast cancer awareness, positive approaches to life and identifying strategies to enhance life/work balance. 2013 Mercedes SL marks 60 years of excellence Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS I don’t think there’s a car buff alive that does not love the Mercedes Benz SL, and the 2013 version has only served to generate more fans and an even greater appreciation of this beautiful automobile. This sixth generation SL is about two inches longer and wider, and its aluminum frame is about 275 pounds lighter than the previous model; most of the body panels are also aluminum, and high-strength steel is used in the roof pillars. Overall, the new SL body is about 20 percent stiffer than the car it replaces. For a bit of history, this model marks the 60th anniversary of the iconic coupe/roadster and the SL designation initially was intended as an abbreviation for the words “super” and “light.” The name “SL” evolved to become the best-known model in the Mercedes-Benz line. The first-ever SL in 1952 was a racecar, with an innova-
tive tubular space frame, a teardrop-shaped aluminum body and “gullwing” doors. It won both Le Mans and the famed Carrera Panamericana that year and the 300SL was a racing sensation that launched the revolutionary production sports car. The 2013 version of the SL550 is powered by an amazingly efficient and refined new V8 engine that gets up to 14 percent better fuel economy while producing even more power, thanks to such innovative technology as direct fuel injection, twin turbochargers and a multi-spark ignition. The new 4.6-liter engine has a 20 percent smaller displacement, but generates more horsepower and torque — 429 hp and 516 pounds-feet of torque. Its smaller displacement is more than offset by the power boost of twin turbochargers and an air-water intercooler. The new SL550 engine comes with an innovative ECO stop-start system. When the car stops and you step on the brake pedal, the engine turns off automatically to save fuel. As soon as you take your foot off the brake and step on the accelerator, the engine computer selects the piston that is in the best position for first ignition, and the direct fuel injection and multi-spark systems work with a starter motor to seamless-

ly re-start the engine. Aside from the powerplant, this SL is simply loaded with the latest in automotive technology. Such things as a retractable hardtop on the roadster and a standard Panorama sunroof on the coupe, with a seethrough polycarbonate roof panel. The optional Magic Sky Control has a glass roof panel and the tinting is controlled by the driver or passenger. A button above the rear-view mirror lets you change the tint from transparent to heavily tinted, using technology similar to automatic dimming mirrors.
There also is a myriad electronic safety systems and crash avoidance systems on the SL, including Attention Assist, Distronic Plus, Pre-Safe Brake and ESP stability control, as well as Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. Base price on the 2013 Mercedes Benz 550SL is $105,000. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Pulling Strings: Master Puppeteer Norbert Buchholz a centenarian
Norbert (center) with his son David and daughter-in-law Audrey
Norbert Buchholz celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends and staff at Jewish Community Services’ (JCS) Congregate Dining Facility at the MichaelAnn Russell Jewish Community Center. He goes there every weekday to participate in JCS’ Congregate Dining Program, which provides him with not only a nutritious kosher lunch but an afternoon of activities and socialization that enhance his quality of life. As his daughter-in-law Audrey Buchholz puts it, “He went for the food and stayed for the congeniality.” Norbert’s son David is convinced that his father made it to his 100th birthday because of this JCS program. “The fact that he has a reason to get up in the morning and go to a place where there is entertainment and camaraderie has filled his life and made him very happy,” he explains. Norbert has had a fascinating life. Born in a small Polish town which is now part of Ukraine, he had a long and successful career
as a professional puppeteer. An interview four years ago related that forty puppets sit on shelves at Norbert’s apartment in Aventura, a veritable gallery of American pop culture and world history. There are Ed Sullivan, Jimmy Durante and Jerry Lewis puppets. For Norbert, life has blended into art -- and vice versa. His career in puppetry began as a part-time hobby in Brooklyn and peaked with performances on television shows in the 1950s and ‘60s. After retiring to Aventura 12 years ago, Norbert found himself with too much time on his hands, leaving him feeling lonely and isolated. As Ela Goldfarb, JCS Vice President of Senior Adult Services, notes, “Discovering the JCS Congregate Dining Program was a life saver for this remarkable and talented centenarian.” For more information on JCS, contact JCS Access at 305.576.6550 website For more informationor onvisit JCS,their contact JCS at jcsfl.org. Having a conversation about Long Term Care Needs By Laura Traeger Having a conversation to think through long term care needs helps you evaluate how a loved one’s long term care needs may impact their or your financial security. Almost 40% of people believe they will need long term care, yet most people don’t take action until something happens. This puts you at a disadvantage due to a pre-existing condition and may cause family members to make spur of the moment, emotional and uninformed decisions. Having honest conversations can reduce stress and allow everyone to make decisions more comfortable later. What would you do if you received a call today regarding a family member who required immediate long term care assistance? 73% of people cannot answer that question. If you as an adult child have these concerns on your mind, chances are your parents do too. Most people are five times more concerned about being a burden to their family than they are of dying. Seniors want to be able to afford quality care in a setting they chose as well as protect their spouse and loved one’s quality of life. One survey found the national median for a year of nursing home care to be $77,000 and the cost for an inhome licensed home health care aide to be $19.00 per hour. Part of retirement strategy should include planning for long term care. What are your options? Public Programs Many people feel the government will pay for long term care expenses. Medicare generally covers a skilled nursing facility after a hospital stay of at least 3 days, for a limited amount of time. Medicaid contributes towards care but requires the savings you’ve worked hard for to be spent down. Private/Family Support You may look to family and friends to provide care. This decision may require moving closer to where these individuals live. Consideration must be given to whether they have the time, ability and physical and financial resources to provide care. Self-Funding You may also assume the primary financial risk for your long term care costs. Review the cost of care in your area and consider inflation. This will help you determine the amount of savings that should be set aside for long term care. Long Term Care Insurance Long term care insurance is designed to help reimburse the cost of skilled or custodial nursing care in your home or in a facility. It provides a pool of money if you are unable to perform two of your daily living activities such as eating, dressing, getting in and out of bed, bathing or if you suffer from a cognitive impairment. Sometimes this coverage is available through your employer. If not speak to a professional who can help guide you through the process of selecting the right policy to fit your needs.

Sherri Verret, Regional Manager at Atlantic|Pacific Management Sherri Verret has 20 years of property management experience and has been a successful Regional Manager at Atlantic|Pacific Management for the last four years. She curSherri Verret rently oversees eight high profile properties with approximately 4,000 units including One Island Place in Aventura, The Beach Club in Hallandale and Residences in Hollywood. With a strong sense of team, developing camaraderie and loyalty, recognition for goals achieved and jobs well done celebrated at monthly staff meetings- the biggest result of her focus on strong leadership and mentoring is low staff turnover. By communicating constantly and always being available for issues at hand, Sherrie obtains good relationships with the board of directors at her properties. By helping to save the properties money by assessing and appropriately streamlining productivity, her most recent success story is a collection of delinquent association maintenance fees, which she said is due to the diligence of property staff communicating with unit owners before forwarding accounts to the collection attorney. Safety is also a serious business, and
Sherri believes that preventative maintenance is the strongest component of ensuring it. Her team routinely checks vacant units for leaks and other issues to protect the buildings. She then reviews the required monthly inspections by the managers and jointly completes one every four months, which is part of the preventative maintenance plan. This reporting schedule provides a preventative maintenance structure to ensure the maximum life of equipment. Sherrie hires employees with special skills and well rounded maintenance experience, furthermore Atlantic|Pacific promotes training. When outside vendors are needed, A|P has a preferred vendor list to choose from, and Sherrie is an expert at contract negotiations. Spearheading a recent creation of an online concierge service, which Atlantic|Pacific Management is set to launch soon, the online website will provide property owners and seasonal renters with a plethora of information about where to eat, pet services, house cleaners, entertainment choices, etc. The online concierge directory will not only serve Atlantic|Pacific properties, but will be open and free to the public, and could become a valuable tool for the front desk of every hotel and condominium in Aventura and surrounding areas. Sherrie is a valued member of the Regional Management team at Atlantic| Pacific. For more information about Atlantic|Pacific Management, call 561-8195433 or visit apmanagement.net.

‘Aventura’s Greatest Hits’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY When the curtain goes up on the Dec. 3 AT& T Young Stars Showcase presented by Northwestern Mutual/Laser Financial Group – talented kids just may be singing some new hit songs like these at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center: Call Me Maybe Not: This version of Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit would be especially appreciated by all Aventura residents on their cell phones who don’t want to be interrupted by annoying spam calls – except maybe if they’re a convenient excuse for hanging up on someone else you really don’t want to talk to! Born to Run Babies: When Bruce Springsteen sang “Baby we were born to run…” he might have been talking about Aventura’s baby boom, evidenced by all the “stroller runs” rounding the circle every morning! New Shopping Attitude: Jared’s, Natutzzi,
H&M…with so many new stores tuning in to Aventura’s great location, “Taking Care of Business” could be the city’s new success song. I Will Survive Holiday Season: It gets a little bit hard to drive around Aventura Mall during the holidays – but odds are you won’t be singing the blues once you see all the bargains being offered since before Halloween to get us to shop early!
Sky Lake Treasure
Hound Dog Park: Even Elvis would be impressed by Aventura’s dog parks – and some of the glitzy matching outfits owners and their pets often wear! Sweet Smart |Child of Mine: The AT&T Young Stars Showcase presented by Northwestern Mutual/Laser Financial Group benefits the Aventura Marketing Council’s Education Foundation supporting a wide range of educational initiatives for students – really making parents want to sing, “Thank You for Being a Friend!” Start Spreading the Good News : Most tabloid papers like to stretch the truth a bit – but a headline like really isn’t too good to be true: ‘Aventura tops charts of world’s greatest places to sing the praises of!’

Annual Jewish sporting event promotes sportsmanship and kinship 2,000 plus athletes will converge on to the Sanford L. Ziff Campus of the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center beginning Saturday, November 17 through Saturday, November 24, for Hebraica’s XIII Annual Maccabi Games, sponsored by JGB Bank. Known for being the largest annual Jewish sporting event in the Southeastern United States, the Maccabi Games were first organized in Miami, in 1982, when a small group of Latin Jewish immigrants decided to continue the tradition of these Games that were so popular in their native Latin American countries. The Games, for them, not only provided a setting for children and adults to compete in a variety of team and individual sporting events, but also provided an opportunity for socialization and camaraderie within a Jewish context. From its inception in South Florida, athletes register for the games by country of origin thus allowing them to maintain cultural ties to the countries from which they emigrated. Hebraica’s first Maccabi Games thirty-one years ago had a registration of 350 children and adults. Today, 2,000 plus athletes, ages 4 – adult will be divided onto 7 country teams - Argentina, Colombia, Israel, Mexico, Peru, USA and Venezuela. There will also be 6 college Teams. The Games have become a reflection of South Florida’s large and diverse Latin Jewish population while it also embraces participation by the total Jewish community.
“The Maccabi Games is an amazing activity that brings together the Jewish community in South Florida. Through the Games, we get to embrace our Jewish identity,” notes Dr. Leonardo Frydman, co-captain of the Mexican team. “The Games create an incredible social environment like no other for our children. “Under the leadership of Maccabi Games co-chairs, Helen Beda, Rully Moskovitz, Isail Wagenberg, and Salo Wagenberg supported by a cast of dedicated volunteers and MAR-JCC staff,” says Gary Bomzer, MARJCC Executive Director, “our Maccabi Games has become a showcase program to our community that not only boasts more than 2,000 registered athletes, but also brings thousands of spectators to the MAR-JCC to enjoy watching the competition.” For information and sponsorship opportunities for the Maccabi Games, check out the MAR-JCC website at marjcc.org or call 305932-4200, ext. 139.

So Isaac rained on your parade BY RUSSEL LAZEGA, Attorney and Author
So Isaac breezed through town and maybe some of us feel a little like that cleverly bunkered third little piggy that never had to worry about a huffing, puffing wolf sending him racing to Citizen’s claims office. While Isaac’s wind may not have caused much damage, what many may not realize is that the flooding did. And now many of us are now submerged in the confusing claims process. What people with flood claims need to know: 1) First, know which insurance covers floods. Flood insurance covers damage caused by rising water and generally does not cover damage from wind-driven water or water that enters through your roof or windows. Coverage for those perils is a different and separate policy. 2) Know what insurance coverage you
have. Make sure you elected to purchase flood coverage. It sounds like a silly question to ask, but even savvy consumers can get lost in the complexities of the insurance maze. 3) If you are making a claim for flood damage know that in most cases you only have 60 days to submit a sworn proof of loss to the insurer. That’s it. So get moving! Time limits are strict. Always know that if you have questions, or are unsure how to submit your claim, you should consult with a qualified attorney or public adjuster. And remember, even if the big-bad-wolf can’t blow a dent in your postAndrew fortress-of-a-house, it just takes a quarter-inch of water to wreak havoc on your new parquet floors. Make sure you’re covered. Russel Lazega is an attorney and author of several of Florida’s most widely distributed legal textbooks on Florida Insurance Law: West’s Florida Practice Series Volume 7 and West’s Florida Insurance Law & Practice.

Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center hosts 9th Annual Ladies’ Spa Day On October 23, The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted its ninth annual Ladies’ Spa Day. Approximately 60 women attended the event, all of whom are current cancer patients receiving treatment at Mount Sinai or cancer survivors. The women enjoyed a day of pampering and relaxation while also being provided with helpful information to manage their cancer.
Attendees indulged in complimentary beauty services such as manicures, massages, hair styling, facials and wig care. Saks Fifth Avenue Bal Harbour, a recent partner of the Mount Sinai Cancer Center for the an-
nual Key To The Cure event, also attended and provided make-up application services. In addition to beauty treatments, the women were invited to participate in energy therapy, meditation and yoga sessions. Among the survivors at this event was Ada Nimo, who was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago and received her treatments at Mount Sinai. “I have been coming to this event since it started because I feel it is important to treat yourself and remind yourself of your beauty within, especially when cancer treatments can wreak havoc on how your self esteem and how you feel you look,” said Nimo. “But, mainly, it’s important to have the opportunity to meet and talk to other women who are going, or have gone through, the same thing you did. There is support amongst all the women here.” Information on healthy eating and integrative medicine were also presented by Mike Cusnir, M.D., an oncologist at Mount Sinai. A special appearance by the current Mrs. Florida, Teresa Sheffield, who is also a nurse at the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center, empowered many of the women to realize that confidence and beauty, truly come from within.
