Law firm of Eisinger, Brown, Lewis, Frankel, Chaiet & Krut hosts NBA All-Star Kenny Anderson BY BARI AUERBACH

T

he Aventura Marketing Council’s most recent Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon was a “slam dunk success” thanks to NBA All-Star Kenny Anderson - the inspiring keynote speaker hosted by the law firm of Eisinger, Brown, Lewis, Frankel, Chaiet & Krut, P.A. located in Hollywood’s Presidential Circle building. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman helped welcome business and community leaders to Christine Lee’s at Gulfstream Park for the event along with “allstar” attorneys Dennis Eisinger and Andy Lewis. They explained that their firm is focused on areas including condominium and community association law, commercial and residential real estate, construction, lender financing, civil, commercial, corporate and general litigation and insurance defense. “We pride ourselves on developing longlasting relationships with our clients and providing sound and practical legal and business advice in a very service-oriented manner,”

Lewis said. A primary focal point of our practice is representation of hundreds of condominium and homeowners’ associations from the Florida Keys to Gainesville.” Testifying to the firm’s unique understanding of this area of the law, Dennis Eisinger teaches a Condominium and Community Development Law class as an adjunct professor at the University of Florida School of Law, sharing over 25 years of experience with students. Prior to the luncheon, Eisinger presented a seminar attended by over 50 condo and homeowner association Board members, strongly supported by Len Brenner and the Joint Council of Aventura. Attendees learned about new legislative changes affecting condominium and homeowners’ associations and innovative strategies for collecting delinquent assessments. Taking the podium, Anderson spoke about his illustrious NBA career, highlighted by being a two-time college All-American and Hall of Famer at Georgia Tech; a #2 NBA draft pick; an NBA AllStar with the New Jersey Nets; and

Today, Anderson is proud of achieving his goal to graduate from St. Thomas University last May – and now, when not spending time with his children, he gives back to the community. Anderson recently teamed up with Floyd Sports Marketing and All-Star Basketball to hold a youth basketball camp at the Michael-Ann Russell JCC, created to

teach basketball while emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and displaying good sportsmanship. Anderson, who served as lead teaching pro, was joined by Tim Hardaway, Dennis Rodman and Mario Chalmers. “When I played in the NBA, I worked on my game and was just happy that I was in the league and could take care of my mother so she didn’t have to struggle anymore,” Anderson

‘Divine Intervention’ exists Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING When negative things are happening in your life, it is not unusual to feel very, very alone and very, very helpless. You may feel that you have no one to protect you and no one to support you. You may feel that you have no assistance and no one to give you a hand. You probably want help but do not know where to turn or how to go about securing it. Your life may feel out of control. You may feel that you are in a downward spiral, going from one crisis to another. Sometimes in the middle of a crisis it may seem as if everything is bad, upsetting and frightening. In difficult times of darkness and despair it is important to remember that there is a force in the Universe called “Divine Intervention.” It is a force that alters your life in unforeseen ways and makes it better. That’s when a

negative situation becomes a positive situation. So when you are in the midst of a storm tell yourself that even if it seems bad it could turn out to be good. As contradictory as it may seem, force yourself to relax and curb your negative, fearful thoughts. Trust that things will have a positive outcome. You may not understand how the situation could ever be positive but it is possible. A car fender-bender, for instance, is bad, but meeting your future husband because of it, is good. An adverse reaction to a recreational drug is bad but ending your addiction is good. Allow your mind to believe in a positive outcome. It will calm you in the midst of the crisis. When you change your thoughts, even for a moment, you generate positive chemical reactions in your mind and body that will empower you and increase your ability to cope with the situation. You will experience a feeling of serenity and hope. You will feel peaceful instead of fearful. And that will truly feel “Divine”. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Aventura Heart Center: Bone Density and Body Composition Skeletons and Schmaltz Osteoporosis is a major health hazard of aging affecting an estimated 44 million Americans, resulting in one million hip, spine, and wrist fractures annually. Hip fractures cause significant numbers of patients to never walk unaided again. Modern bone densitometers can measure bone density and define osteoporosis, osteopenia (milder bone thinning), and normal bone density. “Major risks for osteoporosis are female, advanced age, small frame, family history, removal of the ovaries, early menopause, lack of exercise, eating disorders, medicines such as steroids, alcohol and tobacco use,” says Dr. David Korn of Aventura Heart Center. “Fortunately, medicinal interventions are available to stop and even reverse osteopenia and osteoporosis.” X-Rays are used in a bone densitometer, however, the amount absorbed by the patient is only about one tenth of that received from a chest XRay. Prevention of osteoporosis dramatically decreases bone fractures and the ensuing pain and disability. Aventura Heart Center has now taken this testing to a newer, more advanced level by adding body composition analysis along with standard bone density analysis. Routine height and weight will determine Body Mass Index, a general assessment of healthy or overweight patients. Aventura Heart Center’s new GE lunar densitometer not only determines bone mineral density, but also it determines total body composition. Total body fat for various regions of the body is calculated, displaying percent of fat, fat in grams, lean mass in grams and bone mineral content in grams.

Dr. Robert Rasken and Dr. David Korn, directors, Aventura Heart Center ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

“The patient’s values are compared to known standards for essential fat in the body, acceptable fat content, athletic patients, and overweight and obese patients,” says Dr. Robert Rasken. “Men and women have different percentages, but all patients are compared to age and gender matched standards. “This technology is valuable to assess obesity and weight management, efficacy of exercise programs, and dietary responses to specific regimens,” adds Dr. Rasken. “Different sports and types of training can be evaluated, along with certain medical conditions associated with body wasting.” Drs. David Korn and Robert Rasken can evaluate and explain what you can do to improve your health and reduce your risk of fractures, weight related diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, and heart and vascular disease. Aventura Heart Center is located at 2845 Aventura Blvd. For more information and to make an appointment, call 305-932-6061.

The failure of our Founding Fathers

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Historians have recently focused on the incompatibility of slavery with the natural rights philosophy of our Founding Fathers in our American Revolution. According to historian Gary B. Nash, “The American Revolution represented the largest slave uprising in our history.” Patrick Henry justified our revolution: “Give me liberty or give me death!” Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence stated, “All men are created equal and entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” While those inalienable rights were uttered, not one word applied to about 500,000 enslaved people. Our light of liberty was a “pillar of darkness for slaves.” In 1772, it was ruled that slavery in England was illegal. In our Revolutionary War, the British made it general policy to offer liberty to our escaped slaves. Blacks “secretly wished the British would win, for then all slaves might gain their freedom.” In both the North and South, “thousands of

slaves fled whenever the British forces were within reach.” Virginia’s Royal Governor, Lord Dunmore, promised freedom for all slaves who fled their masters and joined British regiments fighting the Americans. Flight to fight, however, was difficult for many slaves, according to Nash, “because they would be leaving behind wives, children and elderly to the mercy of revengeful masters.” Jefferson estimated that 30,000 slaves fled their masters during the British invasion of Virginia in 1781. A 21 year old slave named Titus is illustrative. He fled his master, joined black regiments in Virginia under Lord Dunmore, renamed himself Colonel Tye, returned to New Jersey and organized other blacks to fight against the Americans. For five years he fought his own American Revolution, before dying from battle wounds.” Thousands of slaves “who fled to the British to fight the Americans died of battle wounds, and many who survived the war were evacuated in 1783 to Florida, Jamaica and Nova Scotia.” Seventy eight years later, over 600,000 Americans died in a Civil War over slavery. Our Founding Fathers could have ended slavery and proclaimed their equal right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for which we Americans fought a war for our independence.

Imagesound is an international company that supplies music and video to hospitality, leisure and retail sites in over 80 countries around the world. Hollywood-based Imagesound Americas is an independent distributor of in-store music, radio, video and digital signage solutions that uses Imagesound’s proprietary software, music library and customized approach. “We give customers licensed music, video and media that is directly suited to communicate with their client base and support their brand objectives; that can range from programming the music for the ‘W’ Starwood hotels, DJing at a corporate event, supplying reliable retail messaging or designing, procuring and installing property sound-systems,” says Damian Pratt, Managing Director, Imagesound Americas. Aventura Worldwide Transportation Service is now giving its clients the option of handling all of their needs for advanced shipping of luggage worldwide when making arrangements for car services. To bring about the new service line, Scott Tinkler, the company’s chief operating officer, says Aventura Worldwide Transportation formed a partnership with YayValet, a company that is affiliated with United Parcel Services and uses UPS locations throughout the nation. The arrangement makes it possible to ship luggage, golf clubs, artwork or other items with one phone call to Aventura Worldwide, Tinkler says. “This seemed to be a logical outgrowth of our mission to provide the most personalized services of any transportation company in the business,” he says. “We are always looking at ways to maximize our clients’ experience. Being able take the hassles of handling luggage out of the equation for VIPs who use our

vehicles just seemed like an obvious move.” The company’s goal, Tinkler says, is to be able to efficiently accommodate any ground transportation request. He says Aventura Worldwide Transportation Service has been named No. 1 in the nation by Limousine and Chauffeured Transportation magazine, which serves the transportation services industry. It’s a ranking that’s particularly meaningful because it’s designated by peers who really know the business. The Aventura-based company has been operating in the Miami, Ft. Like many charities and nonprofits, the Humane Society of Greater Miami depends on the good will and support of corporate partners. “Our charity is warm and fuzzy, and donors don’t have to be animal lovers to support our cause,” says Laurie Hoffman, the organization’s director of special events and communications. “But the numbers show that less than one cent of every dollar donated to nonprofits in this country goes to animal rescue, so we know we’re not at the top of the list. We’re always looking for partners to help on a daily basis, whether for supplies for the animals or the office. “Our corporate partners can help us in so many ways.” One partner that holds a special place in their hearts, Hoffman says, is Airstron, a company that designs, installs, retrofits and maintains air-conditioning and refrigeration systems in the tri-county area. “Airstron helped us in ways we’ll never forget,” she says. “We’ve developed a great relationship.” She cites Airstron’s role in an emergency

a couple of years ago when a 50-ton air-conditioning unit broke down in mid-summer. “It was going to cost us thousands to replace,” Hoffman recalls. “We reached out and the community rallied to our support. Airstron led the pack.” “Airstron is committed to being actively involved in the Aventura community,” states Maxine Lopez, vice president of business development for Airstron. “We look forward to our continued growth in the community, developing long-lasting professional relationships as we proceed.” A room the shelter uses to house cats now has a plaque over the door dubbing it the Airstron Room. At the moment, Hoffman says, the Humane Society of Greater Miami needs a van to transport animals. “Partners can help us in many ways,” she says. “We also depend on volunteers every day to walk and bathe the dogs, socialize with the cats, and help with outreach and fundraising.” For information about Airstron, call 954548-3409 or visit Airstron.com; For Humane Society of Greater Miami, call 305-749-1817 or HumaneSocietyMiami.org

Doron Krakow

primarily through cross border research and education initiatives that share BGU’s innovations with the world. The Hon. Billy Joel, Aventura commissioner and a vice president on AABGU’s national board, explains, “In the words of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, ‘the delegitimization of Israel must be delegitimized.’ Doron

Nissan LEAF is plug-in electric vehicle that works Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS I finally got a chance to drive it — the 2011 Nissan LEAF, I mean. It is, quite frankly, an amazing automobile. Nissan invited me and a few hundred more automotive writers from around the world to come to Nashville and get an upclose-and-personal look at their new baby, one that Nissan is chortling as being “the world’s first affordable zero-emission car.” The new LEAF design is a “fusion of sophisticated aerodynamics to deliver a smooth, elegant flow of the body.” All that aside, it is an attractive vehicle. It has a low compact hood, patented bulging headlights and a large rear spoiler. Nissan engineers designed the LEAF specifically for a lithium-ion battery-powered chassis. It’s a medium-size hatchback that comfortably seats five adults. It’s powered by 48 laminated compact lithium-ion battery modules and a high-response 80kw AC synchronous electric motor that generates 107 hp and

207 pounds-feet of torque. It’s highly responsive and fun to drive. The LEAF is an “urban” vehicle; it’s made to go 100 miles or less on a single charge. The Nissan folks make no bones about that and say the LEAF is intended to take people to work and back or to transport them on their daily errands. It is not a vehicle for cross-country trips or to haul heavy cargo or pull a boat. That’s just not what it was made for. Nissan ran a test competition during the recent press preview to see just how many miles a LEAF would get on a single charge. One of my colleagues and a Nissan executive set out from the factory outside Nashville and finally exhausted the batteries after traveling 118 miles. Not bad, and they say the battery technology will improve with amazing rapidity in the coming years. Expect a LEAF to travel 200 miles on a single charge in the not too distant future. The LEAF can be charged up to 80 percent of its capacity in 30 minutes using the quick charge port and a DC fast charger. Charging at home through a 220V outlet will take about eight hours. The advanced lithium-ion battery pack carries an eightyear or 100,000-mile warranty.

Nissan LEAF has a hatchback design with a low compact hood, bulging headlights and a large rear spoiler. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

As for performance, I found the LEAF to be amazingly responsive. Low-end torque is surprisingly good. This car gets off the line with all the power of a hot four-cylinder gasoline engine. And it really moves along on the highway, too. My driving partner topped out the LEAF at 95 mph, though there’s not a lot of get-up-and-go at high speeds. But even that will improve as this

technology advances. Base price on the 2011 Nissan LEAF is $33,000. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. He may be contacted by calling 305-662-2277, ext. 261, or by addressing email correspondence to <LetsTalkCars@aol.com>.

Is the glass of recovery half-empty or half-full?

Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH The lagging real estate recovery continues to drag down the economy here and across the country. It’s also triggering a heated debate on whether the entire recovery will continue to pick up strength or sputter out completely. The recovery can be compared to the old “glass half-empty, half-full” debate. There are improvements in the national and local real estate markets, but most of us don’t really feel them because all we’ve been seeing lately is higher property tax and insurance bills on depreciating homes and condos. Prices nationally dropped another 0.2 percent according to the latest S&P/ Case Schiller Surveys. Its main indexes are up about 7 percent from the market lows of April 2009, but they are still down 30 percent from the highs of 2006. In Miami, the survey found overall prices down 0.3 percent from July and down a full 1 percent from last August. The latest local figures show condo sales up about 10 percent and Broward single family homes seeing about a 7 percent increase. So, despite the fact the local housing market may still be bottoming out, there are some slight improvements. The Census Bureau just reported new home sales unexpectedly jumped 6.6 percent in September based on low prices, cheap financing and the second straight month of gains. But for the “glass half-empty” crowd, new home sales in September were still down more than 20 percent from last year. Making the numbers even more interesting for South Florida, more than half of all the national new home sales came from the southern region. There still are no answers from all the state and federal investigations into faulty foreclosure documents as to what the impact may be on the real estate recovery. And we’re starting to hear new reports out of the Mortgage Bankers Association that interest rates may start rising again next year. Another factor is that the National

Tax Commission reportedly also is getting ready to open discussions to end the Federal Income Tax Mortgage Interest Deduction (MID) as a possible way to cut the federal budget deficit. So the real estate recovery faces a very uncertain future, even as “cash only” foreign investors continue to snap up prime South Florida real estate marketed at “close-out” prices. LOCAL SEPTEMBER JOB NUMBERS IMPROVE SLOWLY The latest September unemployment figures released by Florida’s Agency for Workforce Innovation shows that while unemployment statewide is getting worse, Dade and Broward counties are seeing some improvements. Florida’s unemployment rate now stands at 11.9 percent which is slightly worse than August. Nearly 1.1 million residents now are out of work with more than 11,000 jobs lost in September alone. Despite this, South Florida now could be seeing a turn-around; the latest figures confirm local unemployment is showing some slight improvements. Miami-Dade’s unemployment now stands at 13.1 percent and that is down about 1.5 points, with some 168,000 people out of work. Broward is also seeing a slight improvement at 10.5 percent with about 105,000 residents out of work. Some local job seekers say they are now starting to see more “help wanted” signs than they did over the summer, but they know many of them may be just parttime jobs for the holidays. Labor analysts say Florida has picked up more than 27,000 new jobs since last fall with gains in professional services, trade transportation and leisure hospitality positions, and it turns out the biggest gains were right here in South Florida. “Help wanted” ads in Florida are now at their highest level since the summer of 2008 according to the latest data from the Conference Board in Washington. Still, the problem remains: How many new hires will turn into full-time jobs that will last through the first quarter of 2012? Watch Al Sunshine’s “CBS Money Watch” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon.

Produced by the City of Sunny Isles Beach in partnership with the Sunny Isles Beach Tourism and Marketing Council, the weekend brought the extraordinary and diverse sounds of jazz for all attendees to enjoy while benefiting Joshua’s Heart Foundation and the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation. The Jazz Fest weekend began with an evening VIP posterunveiling party at the Trump International Resort. This year, the poster was designed by local artist, Joel Grunzweig and auctioned off to benefit Joshua’s Heart Foundation and the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation. The Festival officially kicked off on Friday with a sizzling performance by pianist and composer, Tony Sona at the elegant Jazz Club in the Acqualina Resort and Spa. Headlining the festival was an electric performance by one of the most recorded saxophonists in jazz history, Ed Calle and his all-star Jazz band, which took place at the spectacular Samson Oceanfront Park. Holiday fitness ‘survival guide’ COMPILED BY BARI AUERBACH

It’s never too late to “put down the pie” and start picking up on fitness tips that can help you get a jump on keeping New Year’s resolutions… Use moderation when cheating: Allow yourself to indulge a little here and there, but limit your portions. Set a goal to do something active every day: Try to get out and move for at least 30 minutes. When short on time, emphasize resistance training: Muscle aids in burning fat, and will help to fight off the extras that you normally don’t eat. If you are going to cut the workout short for the day, hit the weights first, even at the expense of cardio. If this is the case, you can use supersets and giant sets to make your weight training workouts more aerobic in nature. Eat a balance of macronutrients: Cutting out food groups can make you feel hungrier. Fill up on protein and vegetables as protein increases your metabolism by up to 20 percent and veggies take more calories to digest than what they contain. Limit alcohol consumption: You’re better off eating an extra cookie than consuming numerous cocktails. Excess alcohol contributes too much to fat gain. Drink plenty of water: Many times overeating is caused by dehydration. Water can provide a sense of fullness - so if properly hydrated, you’ll tend to consume less food. Eat regularly scheduled meals: If you

skip meals in preparation for a family gathering and the buffet of food set out at a holiday party, you may be setting yourself up for disaster. Make sure that you eat all your meals and that the carbohydrates in all of these meals have a low glycemic index – especially breakfast. Research shows people who eat a breakfast with low glycemic carbs will typically eat significantly less food and have more stable energy levels than those who don’t. Don’t keep “danger” foods around: We all have some foods that will trigger a binge, so try to keep them out of reach. Plan a time to wear a favorite tight outfit: Whether it is a cute holiday dress or muscle baring shirt, once you have in your mind that you want to wear your “hot” outfit for a particular reunion or party, you will be less likely to overeat. Adrienne Arsht Center celebrates 5th Anniversary with Season Gala More than 500 of Miami’s most influential arts patrons, philanthropists, and business and civic leaders gathered recently at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County marked its 5th Anniversary Season with a special Gala event starring Broadway performer and four-time Tony Award-nominee Raúl Esparza. This year’s 5th Anniversary Season Gala honored the Center’s legacy to date, the evolution of its mission as a ‘world-class, communitybased’ performing arts center, and its future direction as the Miami community continues to invest in the institution. The elaborate black-tie affair was broken into a series of acts. Act I: cocktails in the Arthur and Alice Adams Foundation Lobby began at 7 p.m. Act II: the dedication and unveiling of the Center’s newly engraved grand donor wall, began with brief remarks by the Center’s newly elected chairman, Mike Eidson, followed by Adrienne Arsht Center CEO, John Richard. The anticipated reveal of the wall was preceded by a trumpeter playing a selection of music written specifically for the occasion. The wall is engraved with the names of hundreds of individuals, families, businesses and organizations that

have supported the Center dating back to its initial planning phase. The wall’s newest additions participated in the Adrienne Arsht Center’s 2010 Donor Wall initiative, which raised more than $2 million. Guests were then ushered into the theater for the second reveal of the evening: the extravagant Barton G.designed temporary ballroom on the Lynn Wolfson Stage in the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House, which was hidden from view behind a curtain. Act III: a spectacular dinner by Barton G. Weiss’ Performing Arts Catering began when the curtain dropped, revealing the elaborate ballroom setting. In line with the 5th Anniversary Season theme, “Every great performance begins with you,” the Gala celebrated the dedication of several “grand honorees” who have played an important role in the Center’s initial development and subsequent success. The evening’s grand honorees included Adrienne Arsht, Lin Arison/Arison Arts Foundation, Alberto and Susana Ibargüen/Knight Foundation, Parker and Vann Thomson, Woody and Judy Weiser, and Sanford and Dolores Ziff. Be a part of the art at MiMo Art Festival nature hotels and iconic symbols. “Everyone is invited to be a part of the painting process,” said Alisa Cepeda, who is also a MiMo Biscayne Association board member and Hernandez’s event co-chair. “Children from area schools will be involved. It’s a great opportunity for youth to be expressive through art.” The heart and soul of the festival will be located at 7500 Biscayne Boulevard. From noon to 6 p.m., visitors can interact with artists stationed along the boulevard as they create their art and kids can get in on the action with art classes and hands-on projects in the kids’ zone. “Interaction will be the driving force of this festival,” said Hernandez. “We have enough space for the artists to set up working studios and sculpt, paint, build and create their art before your very eyes.” Chefs from area restaurants such as Kris Wessel’s Red Light and Michelle Bernstein’s Michy’s will tempt the taste buds with their culinary fare and cutting edge musical talent will be performing on stage throughout the day. There’s something for everyone, even the dogs. “The event will be pet friendly for wellbehaved, leashed pets,” said Cepeda.

The MiMo Art Boulevard Festival will conclude with the holiday tree lighting ceremony at The New Yorker Boutique Hotel on Biscayne Boulevard.

At the MiMo Art Boulevard Festival on Sunday, November 28, you’ll be a part of “art as it happens.” The inaugural festival is presented by the MiMo Biscayne Association and is a pre-Art Basel event celebrating the MiMo District and the talented artists, restaurants and musicians who live there. “This area has never had a festival like this and yet there are many artists in the neighborhood,” said Robert Hernandez, MiMo Biscayne Association board member and event co-chair. “The festival will be enjoyed by families from all over Miami and it will enhance the quality of life of the residents

and the businesses in the area.” The day will kick off at 10:30 a.m. at 7301 Biscayne Boulevard with a historic walking tour of the iconic landmarks on the boulevard, including the newly installed LED Coppertone girl sign and the famed Playboy Club. The tour will be led by area and Dade Heritage Trust historian, Antolin Carbonell. Following the walking tour, Miami City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff and MiamiDade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson will join local artist Marcus Tracey in taking the first brush strokes on the neighborhood wall mural at 7100 Biscayne Boulevard. The community is invited to grab a paintbrush and help Tracey create the mural that will feature area architecture, sig-

“There’s a nearby dog park to explore and the boulevard is riddled with many pet friendly retailers.” At 7:30 p.m., the festival will conclude and the holiday season will officially begin when the holiday tree lighting ceremony takes place at the renowned New Yorker Boutique Hotel, located at Biscayne Boulevard and 65th Street. President of MiMo Biscayne Association, Fran Rollason, and members, Nancy Liebman, Barbara Gimenez and Louis Dalmau have been instrumental in assisting event chairs, Hernandez and Cepeda, with the festival planning. The association members would like to thank current festival sponsors, the Miami Parking Authority, National Concrete Preservation and Hershel Gil Consulting Engineers, for their generous support. “Sponsor packages and artist spaces are still available,” said Cepeda. “It will be a one-of-a-kind event for participants and attendees.” For more information about MiMo ART Boulevard, including artist and sponsor submissions, go online to <www.facebook.com/mimoartboulevard> and <www.mimoartboulevard.com.>

WCS and Sir Pizza team up to help Special Olympics kids BY GARY ALAN RUSE Coaches at Westminster Christian School in Palmetto Bay, with the help of a $5,000 check from Sir Pizza, are boosting the spirits and self image of a group of challenged youngsters that will be participating in the Special Olympics. WCS Head Coach Emil Castellanos explained how it all came about from an inter-school connection. “One of our football coaches is also a teacher at Southridge Senior High School who works for the S.T.A.R. program,” said Castellanos. “He approached me about an all-star softball clinic for the guys to compete in the Special Olympics and that’s how we got moving with it. “It was an unbelievable experience to be able to help those individuals attend the Special Olympics,” Castellanos said. “With us being blessed with what we have, it was a wonderful opportunity to give them something and show them that we do care. It’s going to be an annual event for me from here on out. We bought them all uniforms and hats, custom made with their last names and everything on it.” About 50 mentally and/or physically disabled students from Southridge High School’s S.T.A.R. (Spartans Transitioning

Achievement for Real-Life Skills) program were hosted by WCS for a day of fun, oneon-one instruction and softball clinics. The students, ages 14-22, are all members of Southridge’s softball team that will be participating in the Special Olympics 2010 State Fall Classic later this month. “It turned out to be a great thing for our kids here at the school, too, to help,” Castellanos said. “More of our kids are now involved in what’s called the buddy system, matched up with kids who are mentally or physically disabled in the organization. We’re going to branch out to other sports. We’re anticipating soccer, basketball and all those sports, and we’re trying to see if as a school we can just help out in the community. To experience an event like we did really touched all of our lives, and some of our kids really grew very close.” The $5,000 check from Sir Pizza was presented Wednesday October 27 at the event at Westminster Christian, and the Southridge team also played a friendly game against Westminster’s Varsity Softball team, with the entire WCS high school student body coming out to cheer. “We so appreciated Sir Pizza coming out and feeding everybody at the event, and of course with the $5,000 it made so much possible,” said Castellanos. “Also, the kids

who will be competing in the Special Olympics event in Orlando will be taken to EPCOT after the tournament. We’d also like to thank Under Armour athletic apparel for their help, and everyone who helped make this possible.”

Pictured (l-r) at the check presentation are Rene Prats, Presidency of Sir Pizza South Florida; Emil Castellanos, Head Coach Westminster Christian; Lachy Martinez; Tony Diaz, Franchisee of Sir Pizza; Danny Price, Head Coach Miami-Dade College.
