t was “all about tennis” and grand slam success when Coconut Grove Bank and AKAM On-Site teamed up to host an Aventura Marketing Council Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon. The championship networking event featured Harold Solomon, one of the nation’s all-time greatest tennis players; professional tennis coach Dean Goldfine; and Ivan Baron, USTA Hall of Fame nominee and Tournament Chair of The Delray Beach Open by The Venetian Las Vegas. Bob Hollander of Brown & Brown Insurance, standing in for AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman, welcomed business and community leaders gathered at Christine Lee’s at Gulfstream Park along with Jeffrey Levinson, Coconut Grove Bank Senior Vice President, Commerical Lending, Aventura branch manager Edgar Nieto and AKAM On-Site president Susan Fitch. Turning to great tennis success stories, Solomon, Goldfine and Baron shared special memories of momentous career highlights with AMC members.

As a professional player, Solomon ranked as high as number 5 in the world and won 22 ATP tour events. He went on to coach champions such as Jim Courier, Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles, Anna Kournikova

In 2004, he was Assistant Coach for the US Olympic Tennis Team and Assistant Coach for the American Davis Cup team - later serving as Acting Captain during their quarterfinal bout against Chile in 2006. Baron, who won the Italian Open in 1990 and reached the quarter-finals at the French Open and semi-finals at Wimbledon, is now serving as Tournament Chair for the Delray Beach Open by The Venetian Las Vegas the world’s only 10-day combined ATP Champions Tour & ATP World Tour event. Internationally-acclaimed South Florida artist Romero Britto’s work has captured the hearts of people all over the world with his love of brilliant color, bold patterns and his dedication to positive social change. One of his most recent projects is inspiring a special audience. This fall, Britto designed a Florida specialty license plate to benefit the Lauren’s Kids Foundation and raise awareness about child sexual abuse prevention. The plate features a stylized rendition of the Lauren’s Kids logo, accenting a heart and a butterfly. Based in Aventura, The Lauren’s Kids Foundation's purpose is to prevent childhood sexual abuse through education and awareness and to help survivors heal with guidance and support. Paying for what you value The County’s new fiscal year began on Oct. 1, but getting there wasn’t easy. On one hand, taxpayers were calling on their elected leaders to provide economic relief by keeping the property tax rates flat. On the other hand, doing so would mean placing services provided by police, fire rescue, the library system and the animal shelter in financial difficulty. Tough choices had to be made and in the end, while not every service emerged completely unscathed, essential services remain secure—at least for the time being. But the future of Miami-Dade County’s Public Library System, as well as the thousands of cats in dogs in the care of Animal Services Department remains uncertain. It’s been said that we most value that which we pay for through charitable contributions. It’s how we stand behind the causes we believe in. So in that spirit, Miami-Dade County is establishing a trust fund to allow the public to make voluntary contributions toward the county services that matter most to them. Through this trust, you and other like-minded citizens will be able to pool your resources and direct them exactly where you believe they’re needed most. Over the next few weeks, property tax bills will be mailed to nearly a million households and businesses. A postage-paid envelope will be enclosed, making it convenient for concerned citizens to make a voluntary monetary donation over and above their property tax payment. Whether you choose to provide additional support to animal services, the library system, the police or fire rescue, your donation will help ensure that the services you care about will continue to be provided. Keep in mind that these donations are tax deductible and will help meet pressing community needs. Be sure to consult your tax advisor with any specific questions regarding your deduction. Help keep your community moving forward and give a little something back.

Risk Factors Who can get breast cancer? Typically, vaginal dryness is caused by a lack of lubrication because of decreased estrogen levels. Often, lowgrade vaginal dryness can be managed with water-based lubrication. Unfortunately, however, vaginal dryness can progress to serious pain and irritation, cracking, bleeding and possible infections. There are very effective hormone and nonhormone treatments available for vaginal dryness. Vi at Aventura was a witness to history Rabbi Seymour Friedman remembers Rabbinical Delegation to Birmingham that met with Reverend Martin Luther King 50 years ago BY MARJORIE ALONI It took place 50 years ago, but the memory of the event and its importance is still vivid in Rabbi Seymour “Sy” Friedman’s mind. Rabbi Friedman was one of a contingent of 19 rabbis from the Northeast U.S. who flew to Birmingham, AL in May 1963 to show support for the injustices suffered by African Americans. Rabbi Friedman is a resident of Vi at Aventura, a continuing care retirement community where he has lived for more than 10 years with his wife Devora. He continues to lead and participate in religious services at the community. The four-day rabbinical mission to Birmingham predates the historic March on Washington which is being celebrate across the country. In fact, the Birmingham mission thrust the religious leaders into the throes of the civil rights movement and created a personal connection to Reverend Martin Luther King. Four month before the famous

Washington March, rabbinical leaders from the New York area made a resolution to send a delegation to Birmingham. The Jewish Theological Seminary met and posed a question about how spiritual leaders “could be concerned only with Nazi cruelty when acts of injustice to fellow human beings were taking place in our country.” The rabbis flew to Birmingham and visited numerous African American churches and demonstrated support by meeting and singing with parishioners. As Rabbi Friedman explained, “We all felt it was the right thing to do. In the Jewish faith we believe it is about dignity of the human individual.” In recalling the visit Rabbi Friedman said: “We were participants in their church services and my job was to lead the parishioners in singing. We even taught them an ancient Hebrew hymn.” The rabbis also met with Reverend Martin Luther King who had recently been released from a Birmingham jail. “King was a very inspiring, charismatic man,” said
Rabbi Friedman. “I don’t believe there are many people alive today who met with King on such a personal level.” About Rabbi Friedman, Vi at Aventura Executive Director James Edwartoski said: “He has spent his entire life educating and mentoring people both inside and outside his faith. His early involvement in the civil rights movement is a perfect example of the caring individual that he is. Alternatives for Florida’s Future

Recently I had the opportunity to attend and participate in a new leadership Conference in Orlando organized by Justin Safie of the Safie Review. In attendance was a cross-section of leaders from around the state representing business, non-profit and political organizations. The purpose and goal of the conference was to have round table discussions concerning Florida’s education, energy, transportation, tourism, water supply and health future. The idea was to set strategic and operational plans to strengthen Florida long-term and participants were asked to leave their political and ideological affiliations at the door. I am pleased to provide you with a summary of the topics and suggestions discussed at the event. I hope this information will be of interest to you and I welcome any comments or suggestions. EDUCATION Every child should be reading at grade level by 3rd grade with the goal of 100%
graduation from high school. Florida can consolidate the necessary resources to provide a high quality education for all its children even if it requires more time in school, better teachers, tutors and instructional innovations regardless of cost. If every Floridian is actively engaged in ensuring that 100% of Florida students complete high school, they will be prepared for college, a vocational career and life. ENERGY Florida should make alternative fuels available statewide by 2025. We could attract more residents, businesses and visitors to Florida by having an energy portfolio that will achieve an optimal balance of cost, reliability, safety and diversity. This can be accomplished with very few tax payer subsidies. Florida should institute a renewable portfolio standard of 20% by 2020. TRANSPORTATION Florida could become a national leader in transportation by spending more on research and development. We could make Florida's transportation system the better by allocating 21/2% of the transportation budget to research and development. We should also incentivize private sector investment in transportation technologies. We should create an environment through market forces
for residents, business and visitors to rely less on traditional modes of transportation. TOURISM Florida should increase tourism visits from 91 million to 200 million a year. We should be the undisputed number 1 tourist destination in the world. We should strive to have sustained growth reaching 150 million visits a year by 2020. Florida should develop a public transportation system that allows tourists to see numerous entertainment and other tourist venues. WATER SUPPLY Florida should ensure an abundant supply of clean water capturing 90% percent of storm water currently lost and reintroduce it to the natural system throughout the state. We should also reduce potable water con-
sumption by 50% by 2030 while increasing water supply by 25% through natural resources. HEALTH Florida should be the healthiest state in the nation by 2016. Through the expansion of insurance coverage, all Floridians will have access to affordable, quality healthcare. We should focus on wellness and personal responsibilities. In conclusion, these are ideas and goals proposed by 250 leaders from around the state. I feel that new polices will be developed and introduced by this think tank and the timing was ideal, happening before the next legislative session. Again, I welcome your ideas, comments and thoughts on these issues.

South Broward Hospital District Breaks Record Once Again The Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District voted recently to adopt the millage rate of 0.4000 – making this millage rate the smallest one ever adopted by the District. The new rate of 0.4000 represents a 33.33 percent decrease from last year’s rate of 0.6000, yielding $15.5 million in total District tax receipts. Of these tax receipts, the District disburses $7.7 million to cover the required state funds for the Medicaid match program, as well as support community redevelopment agencies in several municipalities and pay for property appraiser fees. The remaining $7.8 million in net tax revenue collected from property taxes goes to support only the primary care clinics operated by the District for the uninsured residents of the District. The total net tax revenue represents only 0.5 percent of $1.56 billion in total budgeted net revenue for the District. Since 2010/2011 fiscal year, the District has not used tax dollars to fund uncompensated care delivered in any of its hospitals. Uncompensated care provided by the District in fiscal year 2014 is
projected to exceed $1 billion. “It’s quite the achievement for Memorial to maintain such a strong financial position, particularly during these challenging times in healthcare,” said Hobel Florido, chairman, South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to pass on the savings to residents of the South Broward Hospital District.” For homeowners, the commissioners’ vote helps to provide relief in property taxes. Here is one common example: Assuming the assessed value of a home increased by the maximum allowed under the “Save our Homes” limitations, (i.e. 3 percent, per year), the assessed value of a home after homestead exemption went up from $147,000 in 2012 to $150,000 in 2013, the homeowner would have paid to the District $88.20 in property taxes in 2012 at the 0.6000 millage rate and would pay $60.00 in 2013 at the 0.4000 millage rate. This represents a $28.20 or a 32% reduction in the homeowner’s tax bill from the District.
