IDEA and SMi Group host ‘Let’s Talk Football’ BY BARI AUERBACH

N

FL could have stood for “Networking for Leaders” in business and sustainable development when partners IDEA (International Design Engineering Architecture) and SMi Group International hosted an Aventura Marketing Council Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon themed “Let’s Talk Football.” Armando Salguero, Miami Herald sports writer and 640AM sports radio host was emcee for the all-star panel featuring NFL alumni Deon Dyer, Fred Taylor, Brian Walker and Shawn Wooden. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss Serota, Helfman joined by IDEA president Stephane L’Écuyer and SMi president Marie Bernard Poulin, welcomed guests huddled at Christine

Lee’s at Gulfstream Park. Kicking off the event, Poulin explained IDEA and SMi have completed thousands of energy-efficient architectural, engineering, design and construction projects around the world while adhering to the game plan: “Respect, protect, develop.” When the microphone was passed to Salguero, he tackled football talk with the winning panel of NFL alumni. Dyer, a former fullback was originally drafted by the Dolphins in 2000; Taylor was a running back, playing for the Jaguars and the New England Patriots; Walker, a former safety, played for the Redskins, Dolphins, Seahawks and Lions; and Wooden was also a safety, playing for the Dolphins and Bears.

The Wise old Owl

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING The owl’s head is able to turn 270 degrees so he can see more aspects of a situation or problem. He also has excellent night vision. He can see in the dark which allows him to see all of the nuances of an issue. Being able to see in the light and in the dark is very helpful when trying to make decisions. It is important to be able to see the complete picture. Your sight gives you information that you act upon based on what you perceive to be true or real. In western culture the owl is often the symbol for wisdom. To make truly wise decisions you need to see as much as possible in your world. To see what’s in front of you, alongside of you and behind you as much as possible. Psychologically it would be helpful to have the owl‘s ability to see more of your

surroundings, to be able to detect movement and change. How often have you said after an upsetting or disturbing event, “I didn’t see it coming”? You were blindsided psychologically and emotionally by a strike or attack that was unexpected. The owl is also adept at seeing things that are far away which is very important. It is good to be able to see the consequences of an action you may take. Being able to see into your future would tend to make you wiser in your decisions. Less will be concealed and more will be revealed. Limited vision does not give you all the facts. The more information you have about something, the greater your understanding and awareness. You will be able to avoid rash decisions based on incomplete facts. You will be more sensitive and discriminating. You will be more empathetic. Your judgments will be better for you, your life in general and your current issues in particular. Seeing like the wise old owl is very advantageous. Keep your eyes wide open and stay flexible. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center announces plans to become Tobacco-Free In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, celebrated nationally during November, Aventura Hospital announces its plans to become a tobacco-free campus effective January 1, 2012. The new policy applies to all smokers including staff, visitors and patients, and will phase out all designated smoking areas on campus. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), tobacco use – including cigarettes and all forms of smokeless tobacco– has led to more deaths than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle accidents and acts of violence combined. “Aventura Hospital and Medical Center is devoted to providing our patients and guests, with the best environment for healing,” said Heather Rohan, CEO of Aventura Hospital. “The negative effects of tobacco are well documented. The commitment to our staff and community is to create an environment that is tobacco-free for all.” The transition will kick off during The Great American Smokeout, held on November 17th, where Aventura Hospital will host an informational event to provide materials and smoking cessation tips to the community. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide support

to those joining the hospital in becoming tobacco-free. This change will affect all areas of the campus, including the main hospital, garages, the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the on-site medical office buildings.

For more information on the tobacco-free initiative, visit AventuraHospital.com. For more information on smoking cessation classes or other alternatives to quit smoking, call 305-682-7000.

‘Founders-Keepers’ mall stores!

Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY Aventura’s 16th annual Founders Day celebration was yet another great success but if you were one of the city’s original “founders,” maybe you would have voted to make the best even better by adding community amenities like these… Six Flags at Founders Park: Wouldn’t it be great if there was a giant rollercoaster right in the middle of Founders Park? If ever there was a way to have more fun coasting through life’s “ups and downs” this would be the most amusing coping mechanism! Aventura Mall Airport: The mall is already such a great tourist attraction for the city - just imagine if developers had planned to incorporate an airport too…then, even more international visitors could land in front of Bloomie’s and maybe even trade some of their frequent flyer miles for special savings at all the

Organic Market on the Circle: Everyone exercising around the circle on Country Club Drive is really into fitness – so an organic market would be the perfect addition...While biking, rollerblading, running or pushing baby strollers, you could just reach over and grab your favorite fruits and vegetables compliments of Aventura – the healthy and wealthy city! Detailing on Biscayne: If the city opened car detailing centers all along Biscayne Boulevard – just think how much revenue could be generated! Motorists stuck in traffic could have their cars washed and waxed…and if a train comes, there would even be time to bang out dents and dings too! Gym at Government Center: To increase attendance at Aventura City Commission meetings, it would be a great to have a gym inside Commission chambers – so while working out, you could watch the proceedings and maybe even exercise your right to express your opinions. Then again, Aventura Founders helped created such a well-run city, it’s nice not having to even lift a finger to enjoy all the great community amenities that are definitely “Founderskeepers!”

High cholesterol/triglyceride levels?

Michelle Ishakov NUTRITION & YOU Many people have high cholesterol and triglyceride levels due to genetics, poor eating habits, and lack of exercise. If you are overweight, you are at a much greater risk. How can one go about lowering bad cholesterol (LDL) and increasing good cholesterol (HDL)? Simple lifestyle changes can help you lose weight and improve levels. Here are some helpful tips! Maintain a healthy weight by cutting down on high-calorie foods and drinks. Incorporate more vegetables, lean proteins, and foods that contain fiber, as they all lower both triglycerides and cholesterol and are packed with nutrients to improve heart health. Because our bodies store and circulate fat in the form of triglycerides, a diet full of unhealthy saturated and trans fats will raise these levels. Limit foods such as marbled red meat, poultry skin, butter, whole milk, and other full-fat dairy products that are high in saturated fat. Trans fats are more harmful than saturated fats, so check nutrition labels on foods such as margarines, snack foods, baked goods, and other packaged items to ensure they do not contain these bad fats. When cooking, broil, bake, steam, or grill your foods. Stay away from fried foods and keep sauces on the side. Also try taking 3 to 4 drops of pomegranate oil first thing in the morning. Increasing consumption of good fats is actually beneficial to your health and

weight loss! Increase your daily intake of good fat – Omega-3s. Omega-3s are an excellent source of healthy fats, good for heart health, and effective at lowering triglyceride and cholesterol levels. I recommend eating at least three servings per week of omega-3-rich fish such as wild salmon, herring, mackerel (not king), and sardines (none of these farm raised). For those who do not eat fish, take an Omega-3 supplement such as Krill Oil or get your Omega-3s from walnuts, flaxseed, avocado, and extra virgin oil. Try to limit refined carbs. These are low-quality carbs that are high in sugar or refined grains such as white flour, honey, sweeteners, candy, baked goods, regular pasta, white rice, white bread, cereals, and pastries. Limit fruit and fruit juices since they are dense in simple sugars. Consume high-quality carbs such as vegetables and high-fiber whole foods such as oatmeal, brown and wild rice, whole grain pastas and breads, and foods from the legume family such as lentils and beans. Consume less alcohol. If you have high triglycerides, alcohol should be considered a rare treat. Even small amounts can dramatically increase these levels. Just one drink can send levels soaring in sensitive individuals. If you must have a drink, go for red wine as it is a good antioxidant. Lastly, stress is linked to increased cholesterol levels. Try to reduce stress with relaxation exercises and meditation. Take deep, refreshing breaths throughout the day. For more helpful tips, please visit me at Nutriway in the Promenade Shops of Aventura. You can reach me at 305-4387775 or via email mishakov@mynutriway.com. See you soon!

UnitedHealthcare delivers smiles to hospitalized children in South Florida with donation of nearly 1,000 arts & crafts kits Nick Zaffiris, CEO of UnitedHealthcare of South Florida; Jeff Alter, CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s Employer & Individual; Mike Cole, Vice President of UnitedHealthcare’s Employer & Individual

More than 60 UnitedHealthcare employees and senior leaders spent an afternoon assembling nearly 1,000 arts and crafts kits for children hospitalized in South Florida. Through a partnership with Project Sunshine, a non-profit organization that provides free educational, recreational and social programs to children facing medical challenges, UnitedHealthcare is able to bring smiles to pediatric patients and their families. UnitedHealthcare and Project Sunshine have worked on similar volunteer efforts in dozens of different markets across the country this year. The arts and crafts kits will be enjoyed by young patients and their families during extended

hospital stays. Each kit contains fun items, such as crayons, colorful stickers and a journal that will bring much needed relief from the anxiety and isolation often related with hospitalization. The kits also provide an opportunity for children to explore their creativity with their families and express how they’re feeling. “Being hospitalized can often be a stressful and emotional experience for children and their families,” said Jeff Alter, CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s Employer and Individual business. “We’re hoping these arts and crafts kits bring a smile to the kids’ faces and give them a fun, creative distraction during their time in the hospital.”

Symboley offers a ‘hands-on’ one day Quickbooks Training Class at Kovens Conference Center, FIU

Finally a chance to really learn the “ins” and “outs” of one of the most popular accounting programs used today by small and mid size businesses. A one day course will be offered on Wednesday, Nov. 30th and Sunday, Dec. 4th at the Kovens Conference center, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This class will give students the opportunity to work on a simulated live-like company, giving them the chance to learn how daily finances are maintained, as well as understanding the financial health of one’s company — precluding

unexpected results. It’s time to throw out the old shoe box and begin using Quickbooks to manage your company more professionally; ultimately minimizing the time one’s accountant needs to spend getting documentations in order. Even if you’ve been using Quickbooks, chances are that you are not using all the features it has to offer.

All-new Ford Focus has sleek design, delivers 40 mpg Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS It’s nice to see that Ford has finally come around and is offering American consumers something more than gas-guzzling SUVs and monster pickup trucks. I refer specifically to the all-new Ford Focus, a small car with a wonderfully fresh design, high levels of craftsmanship and occupant safety, an exceptional array of smart new technologies, and an EPA-rated 40 mpg on the highway. On top of all that, Focus delivers solid handling and an overall excellent driving experience. Focus is powered by a new 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that combines high-pressure gasoline direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) for enhanced performance and fuel efficiency. How about 20 horsepower more than the previous Focus engine and a fuel economy improvement of more than 10 percent? The new engine is mated to the latest sixspeed Ford PowerShift automatic transmis-

sion with a high-efficiency dual dry-clutch design. The advanced transmission also is offered with SelectShift Automatic that allows you to shift gears manually. A fivespeed manual transmission is available. With a sleek and sporty design, Focus is available in hatchback and sedan models — S, SE, SEL and Titanium trim levels. The four-door sedan and five-door hatchback models mark the next step of Ford’s kinetic design form, and more than 10 million units have been sold worldwide since Focus was launched in 1998. Focus has a striking front end dominated by a wide-mouth grille and slanted inset headlights. A sleek profile and a dramatic rising beltline emphasize the athletic stance. The stylish exterior is matched by a modern, cockpit-style interior with a stylish center console. Bold graphics, a sculptured softtouch instrument panel and quality trim materials give the interior a premium look. Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels have been reduced and driving dynamics improved by the increased stiffness of the body structure, one with 30 percent greater rigidity than the previous Focus. Also, there’s a new windshield with a special acoustic layer that significantly reduces wind and road noise. The wind-

shield is complemented by increased side and rear glass thickness for extra quietness. Focus also offers SYNC with MyFord Touch, which replaces many of the usual buttons, knobs and gauges with LCD screens and five-way buttons. The screens can be personalized to display information relevant to each driver using a simple button click, voice command or touch screen tap. MyFord Touch is powered by a new generation of the company’s popular SYNC system, which includes a sophisticated voice control system for vehicle functions, connected Bluetooth devices, a Wi-Fi

hotspot, MP3 players and a variety of external media. Focus offers a wide range of smart technologies, including active park assist, HD Radio with iTunes Tagging, rear-view camera, Intelligent Access with push-button start and Wi-Fi access. Starting price on the 2012 Ford Focus is $17,295. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. ‘Holiday diet strategies’ endorses by Dr. Oz BY BARI AUERBACH

Dr. Mehmet Oz continuously encourages overweight viewers of his TV show to get back on track by losing at least ten pounds with his “Just 10 Diet Plan.” But since holiday parties are making the “Just 10” health challenge even tougher, Dr. Oz enlisted the assistance of Dr. Michael Roizen, Chief Wellness Officer at the Cleveland Clinic, to present helpful tips since this is the time of year responsible for almost all weight gain. Three Rules to Survive Parties 1. Prepare a pre-party pack with choices like nuts and low-fat string cheese 2. No stacking your plate – there should be space between the foods 3. Have a 100 calorie cocktail – one serving of eggnog can have as much as 450 calories. Instead, opt for a wine spritzer that has only 100 calories.

like trail mix is the doctors’ best advice – but if you do decide to visit a food court at a mall, try sharing a slice of pizza with a friend or opting for a healthful salad. More Recipes For Diet Success * Cut out sugary sodas * Don’t eat snacks larger than your fist

Stand Up to Sweets Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen suggest buying sweets to a take to a party instead of baking them so you won’t be tempted to eat a lot and get a sugar high before even leaving the house. They also believe in the effective “eye your pie” strategy – which means pick only one dessert to eat that you like best. Eating Out While Shopping “Eat before you shop” or pack a snack

* Don’t eat after 8 p.m. Accountability Weigh yourself twice a week and write down what you’re eating at parties since “accountability” can help you keep count of how many calories you’re consuming. This holiday season, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen agree, “Staying true to your diet is the greatest gift of all!”

The South Florida Emerald Society will celebrate Christmas in Ireland on Thursday, Dec. 8, 6:30 p.m., in the Ancient Spanish Monastery, 16711 W. Dixie Hwy. in North Miami Beach. The evening will include a sumptuous buffet dinner and entertainment by The Three Jacks and the Irish Fiddlers. The Three Jacks, a high energy Irish/Celtic/Rock band, is one of Miami’s best loved bands and they are award-winning, internationally known recording artists. They are famous for their interpretations of Whiskey in the Jar, work of the

Weavers and Matty Groves. The Irish Fiddlers are a group of young musicians comprising students from the third grade through high school. They specialize in traditional Irish fiddle music. Tickets for the raffle are available. The prizes include cash prizes of $1,000 and $500 and a weekend getaway at the Conrad Hotel on Brickell. Raffle tickets are $5 each. The event is open to all and tickets are only $75 each. For tickets and reservations, call Mary Ann Kerr at 305-302-2301. The South Florida Emerald Society is an organization for ladies and gentlemen of Irish extraction founded in 1954.

“YOUR AD HERE — BIG YELLOW SCHOOL BUS” BY KAREN ARONOWITZ, President, United Teachers of Dade

Imagine the yellow school bus so covered with ads that we smack right into the back of one, our attention diverted by 3D, strobe-lit, hologram movie ads, flashing, pulsing lights for caffeine-laden power drinks, logoencrusted sportswear, and other trinkets and trash we sell to move our economy. It’s the American way! All supposedly G-rated, although what passes for G in our overly sexualized consumerism makes the letter blush like a scarlet A. Still, our schools are so cashstrapped from the decrease in funding to public education that school boards are putting out the for-sale sign themselves. No space need be uncovered. Will students pay any attention to the work teachers place on white boards, smart boards, or, in a few impoverished public schools, chalk boards, when bells and whistles from advertisers compete for their attention? It is not philanthropy that drives companies into our schools. It’s

the thrill of a captive audience, an audience that will have no Parental Control button to screen what’s seen in a school, an audience that is just learning to think about the the credibility of a source, an audience that, by age and maturity, will believe what is placed before them. One does not challenge authority until enough learning has taken place. We will abandon four-year olds and fourteen-year-olds to the hands of advertisers. I suppose the next step is to make each teacher responsible for selling enough advertising to “endow” their position. A sort of commission sales requirement to add to the idea of “pay-for-performance.” It’s not surprising that the hallowed halls of our schools will be turned into the inside of a casino, where the lights are low, there are no windows or clocks so that no one knows whether it’s night or day, and flashing, strobing lights, bells and whistles convince even the losers they’ve won. Lock up your children, folks. Throw them an iPad, a Twinkie, and a bottle of water and call it home schooling. You might not be there, but it could be a safer space than school. The United Teachers of Dade represents 35,000 teachers and school support personnel in MDCPS. The union is committed to being a leader in creating public school reform, fostering a quality public education for all students and elevating the professional status of teachers, paraprofessionals, office employees, and all school support personnel.

Living Well, Being Well Expo Promotes East Ridge Retirement Village’s Unique Lifestyle was held in October. “The Expo offers an opportunity to illustrate the eight dimensions of wellness that are part of the core services and values of the community,” said Director of Environmental Services Kenneth Gould, who spearheaded the event. “It is geared to residents, families and friends and employees and seeks to inspire all to lead healthier and more sustainable lives.” The Expo offered educational literature and/or programs from a variety of representatives, focusing on each component of wellness. “Education is the first step in embracing change,” said Gould. “You can’t simply tell someone what they should do. Our take-away tips and interactive demonstrations can easily be applied to all aspects of living”. Each person who attended the Expo was invited to bring something to be recycled—clothing, telephones, ink cartridges, glass, plastics and even aluminum foil baking dishes— and greeters from Miami Coral Park Senior High School’s Autism Spectrum Disorder Unit collected and classified the items. Physical wellness was demonstrated with interactive Wii Bowling and Tai Chi exercising along with gardening tips from the University of Florida IFAS Extension. Emotional Resident Marty McLaren; Director of Environmental Services Kenneth Gould; East Ridge and spiritual wellness was illusresident and Secretary of the East Ridge Board of Directors Carolyn Garwood; Resident trated by a presentation on relaxand Chair of the East Ridge Retirement Town Hall Barbara Sims; Executive Director Vic- ation and meditation by Dr. toria Duvall and Human Resources Director Damaris Navarro at the Living Well, Being Stephanie Carter and reiki massage Well Expo held recently at the life care community in South Miami. demonstrations.

East Ridge Retirement Village stands apart from many senior living communities in that residents and employees embrace wellness as an integral part of the community’s lifestyle. This emphasis on wellness is carried out in innovative programs incorporating eight principals of wellness: intellectual, vocational, social, spiritual, physical, emotional, environment and health services. In every aspect of community living, there is one or more of the eight principals encompassed in order to ensure successful aging. Since 2011 marks East Ridge’s 50th anniversary, special focus has been on initiatives that are forward thinking and related to the community’s future. An example is the community’s 2011 Living Well, Being Well Expo which

Head Restraints or Head Rests? It is not a head rest... The head restraint in a vehicle does not help you rest your head, as a matter of fact it helps you not to break your neck in case of a collision. It is always attached to the top of the car seat. They are only good and effective when properly positioned. Where should they be? It is the head restraint that will reduce neck injuries in case of a collision, and so it is important to have your head aligned with the headrest, but not the neck alone, as this would be extremely dangerous in case of collision. Most cars have manually-adjustable head restraints, but they all have to be 27.5 inches above the seat reference point by law. How do you adjust them? But how should these restraints be adjusted? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to be effective, the top of the restraint should lie somewhere between the top of your ears and the top of your head. If the restraint articulates for horizontal adjustment, it should be placed so that it’s as close to your head as possible, without pushing your head forward or causing the height of the restraint to drop. The position of your seatback is also important - less is better when it comes to reclining. A more upright seatback means that the head restraint will likely be in a safer position - one that’s closer to your head. “Let our Family Help you and your Family.”

Miami-Dade College representatives also provided information about its Continuing Care & Professional Development program. Environmental wellness was demonstrated by the various companies that provide green cleaning products and recycling efforts as well as the many initiatives untaken by the community to conserve energy and recycling including the thrift shop and planting of Florida native plants. Social wellness which recognizes the need for leisure and recreation offered a laughter therapy session along with information about the many social activities which are part of the community’s calendar of events and entertainment throughout the day.
