Avoid Fault Finders
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Some people find fault with everyone and everything. They often set you up to fail. If you are in a relationship with someone like this you will be very, very unhappy and very uncomfortable. If you are an adult, get out of the relationship if you can. At least limit your time and exposure. Do not cling to the false hope that they will change. They will never change. If one or both of your parents had this character defect you will be handicapped with a strong sense of inadequacy and often failure. You may be plagued by guilt as well. It is a terrible curse to feel that you are not good enough. It is a difficult, if not impossible, chore to feel that you always have to prove yourself. That is not healthy because it diminishes you. There are two scenarios that may occur. You may feel that whatever you do
is not good enough so you may stop trying. You may develop resentment towards anyone or anything that makes any demands on you, no matter how minor. You may go the other way and try too hard to please. You may sacrifice your own needs to satisfy the needs of others. This makes you very vulnerable and increases your chance for depression. Sometimes, what they say and do is so appalling that you are hurt and in disbelief. You will need to become strong and do some work on yourself to turn your thoughts around. You will need to learn to value yourself and put yourself first. You will need to find a buffer if you have to be around the fault finders. Spray some symbolic Pam on your heart and mind so that everything the fault finders say will slide right off of you. Nothing negative will be able to stick to you. Have the Universe and the light of love encircle you and protect you from any negative thoughts or feelings directed at you. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

‘Know-vember Reminders’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY Whether you live in Aventura or you’re just visiting, here are some “Know-vember” reminders you should know about in order to derive maximum enjoyment from all the city’s great services and amenities… *Knowing not to tune into easy listening radio stations when stuck in traffic during holiday time is of upmost importance in order not to fall asleep behind the wheel! You may want to consider buying some new high-energy CDs you can turn up really loud when you’re waiting for one of those really long red lights to turn green for a second. . *Knowing you’ll keep getting lots of 20% off coupons from Bed Bath & Beyond; knowing Aventura has Miami-Dade’s lowest property tax rate; and knowing all the loose change you put into the Publix coin counter may add up to a small fortune could make you decide to spend all the money you’re saving on a new phone – unless
someone couldn’t pay you enough to wait on line for hours to get the newest model. *Knowing the Aventura Mall offers free Wi-Fi service means now your Facebook status can always say, “I’m maxing out my credit card!” – making everyone afraid you might ask for a loan delete you from their friends list! *Knowing you don’t have to cook for Thanksgiving and you can order a complete takeout feast from Mo’s is really something to be thankful for! *Knowing Aventura commissioners feel residents should get lower car insurance rates because of red-light cameras should make you feel better if you get a citation in the mail! *Knowing the Aventura City of Excellence School has earned the state’s “high performing” designation might make you wonder if you’re smarter than a fifth grader. *Knowing Aventura’s annual Founders Day event is Nov. 6 at Founders Park is cause to celebrate! This year’s theme is “Aventuira’s Backyard” – very apropos since in the City of Excellence, the grass is always greener!

Memorial Regional Hospital offers 3-D Mammography technology Over a year ago, Memorial Regional Hospital’s Women’s Imaging Center was among 15 facilities across the country engaged in a study of Tomosynthesis, a revolutionary 3-dimensional breast cancer detection technology system that was being touted as the next frontier in mammography. Studies later showed that 3-D tomosynthesis mammography could reduce the call-back rate for suspicious routine mammogram by 30 percent, and still detect as many or slightly more cancers. Tomosynthesis is now approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and breast radiologists at Memorial Regional Hospital are offering the technology, which looks similar to a standard mammography machine and uses X-ray just like the standard 2-D digital mammography. However, the tomosynthesis mammography camera moves in an arc over the breast taking 15 mini-pictures within 4 seconds. These multiple pictures create a layer-by-layer look of the breast tissue – 1mm at a time removing tissue overlap that may hide cancers or mistake dense breast tissue as tumors. The result is less need for recalls, fewer invasive testing procedures and potentially earlier detection and treatment for breast cancer. The earlier a breast cancer is detected, the better chance a woman has in beating the disease. The discovery stage of the disease begins with self-examination and mammography. Memorial Regional Hospital was among 16 health facilities throughout the United States to participate in a Harvard University-led trial that began in February 2010 and ended February 11, 2011, when the FDA announced approval.

‘I Have a Dream’ Foundation of Miami Gala celebrates 16 years of turning dreams into reality Stephanie, Jules and Eddie Trump, owners of Acqualina Resort and Spa on the Beach, will host the 16th annual “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Miami Gala at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel on November 8, 2011. Guests attending the benefit gala will enjoy a cocktail reception, dinner, silent and live auctions and entertainment by Lindsey Sky and American Idol Season 8 contestant, Matt Giraud. The “I Have a Dream” Foundation is an extraordinary initiative that through classroom adoption and sponsorship, provides underprivileged children with the resources and opportunities needed to pursue and advance their life goals. Eugene Lang launched the “I Have a Dream” Foundation in 1981 after addressing the graduating 6th grade class at his alma mater PS. 121 in East Harlem. When he learned that three-quarters of the school’s students would probably drop out of school, Lang promised college tuition to every sixth grader who graduated from high school. Lang’s promise encouraged 90 percent of the class to graduate, with 60 percent continuing on to college. The foundation has successfully expanded and now aids over 4,000 students in over 30 cities by providing the same promise through support in schools with after school, summer, prevention and mentoring programs. The Trump family founded the Miami chapter

of the “I Have a Dream” Foundation in 1995 with the adoption of a second grade class at Charles R. Drew School in Liberty City. The class room adoption was a success and the program motivated 95 out of 97 Dreamers to graduate. They hope to continue their successes with the new class they adopted in 2007 at Hibiscus Elementary School. Genetically Modified Foods
Michelle Ishakov NUTRITION & YOU
Do you know what genetically modified foods are and how they affect your health and the foods you eat? Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods that are produced from genetically modified organism (GMOs). They have had their DNA altered through genetic engineering. Genes from other plants, viruses, bacteria, and animals are inserted into the genes of products such as corn to make them resistant to drought, disease, and pesticides, as well as increasing their shelf life. The most common modified foods are derived from plants including high fructose corn syrup, soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil, cotton seed oil, and wheat. These ingredients are added to many processed foods found in supermarkets today. Between 70 to 75% of processed foods such as soda, soup, corn chips, pizza, baby food, and infant formula contain these ingredients. Conventional milk products including butter, yogurt, cheese, and ice cream may also be altered with a synthetic GE (genetically engineered) growth hormone. Documented health risks associated with these foods include toxic and allergic reactions, antibiotic resistance, immune suppression, and other serious illnesses. The safety of GM foods has not been proven. Every independent animal feeding
study conducted on GE foods show adverse or unexplained health effects such as problems with growth and organ development, damaged immune systems and organs, bleeding stomachs, and increased death rates. The effect of the synthetic growth hormone on humans has been linked to elevated risks of cancer. For this reason, many countries have banned modified foods from being imported and grown or have laws required labeling on foods that do contain GMOs. Genetically engineered foods are not labeled in the United States, so unless you are buying foods that are 100% organic, you will never know if they contain GMOs. Eating 100% organic foods will limit your exposure to dangerous chemicals, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, growth hormones, and antibiotics. GM foods are prohibited from carrying an “organic” label. Many companies, including “natural food” companies, make foods with GM ingredients. These companies include Coca Cola, Kraft, Nestle, Libby’s, Ocean Spray, Kellog, Nature Valley, Hershey, Quaker, Pepperidge Farm, Campbells, Heinz, Keebler, Crisco, Peter Pan, Smuckers, Progresso, Eggo, Stouffers, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Yoplait, Land O Lakes, and Dannon. And the list goes on! For more tips on how to avoid these harmful ingredients, please visit me at Nutriway in the Promenade Shops of Aventura. I can also be reached at 305438-7775 or by email mishakov@mynutriway.com. See you soon!

It’s Stone Crab Season…
Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer EAT THIS... DRINK THAT Before I moved to Florida I really never understood the allure of Stone Crabs. I mean, I grew up in New York, summering on the beaches of Long Island, indulging in all things delicious, drinking champagne and eating Maine lobster. It’s not like I was deprived or anything, we just didn’t really eat crab that often. I believe that Dungeness crab was my crab of choice back in the day. But once I moved to Florida that all changed. I met my now-husband, Ian, and one of his favorite places was (and still is) The Rustic Inn. If you don’t eat crab – don’t go! On one of our very first dates, he ordered mounds of Blue and Golden Garlic crabs. I am not really a fan of anything drenched in butter but working so deliberately for just a bite… the purity of the actual crabmeat, the sweet, firm, white flesh… is incredibly satisfying. And that was 11 years ago. Since then, we make it a practice to eat crab as often as possible. And not just any crab – okay, well, most any crab will work, but come the king of crabs – the Stone Crab. Just coming into season, which is October 15 through May 15, these tasty morsels come in three sizes: Medium (6 to7 per pound), Large (four to 5 per pound), and extra large (also called Jumbo, 2 to 4
per pound). Some places will offer colossal (one to 2 per pound) – and those are really big! The crabs have two claws, the larger claw – the crusher; smaller claw is the pincher. Both are edible, but in Florida, fishermen only take one at a time. If you’ve never indulged in this exquisitely messy ritual, the time is now. The place to go: Joe’s Stone Crab. Known world-wide, Joe’s takes the mess out of eating them. The upscale-yet-casual eatery that closes in the off season, cracks the crabs so you don’t have to. And while it serves “other” items, it is known for this seasonal specialty. Served chilled and with a mustard sauce, they are not only delicious, but also not un-healthy. Without butter or dipping sauces, the sweet meat is low in calories and full of flavor. This is the time of year I relish! I have had Stone Crabs twice so far. First, at the Eden Roc Renaissance Resort, and just this past Sunday – sitting in my living room watching the football game. I paired it with an heirloom tomato salad and freshly picked basil from my garden. It was amazing. As a matter of fact, I can’t think of anything more satisfying. So eat them out, bring them in, order them online, pick them up, but no matter how you get them – don’t miss this season! Shari Lynn Rothstein has been writing about food, wine, lifestyles and fashion for more than 20 years, in New York and Florida. She resides in Aventura. Shari can be reached at shari@slkcreative.com for comments, questions thoughts.

New Hyundai Veloster is a three-door coupe with sass Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Hyundai recently introduced a nifty new car to the U.S. market called the Veloster; it’s a compact three-door coupe with all the latest technology and it’s targeted at younger consumers. Veloster combines the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback, while incorporating a third conventionally hinged side door on the passenger side for safe, ready egress or access to the rear seat. The rear door handle is cleverly hidden to maintain the coupe design. The sporty, sleek design should have great appeal to high school and college age buyers. Veloster’s unique design was inspired by today’s high-performance sport motorcycles. With distinctive black A-pillars, the car’s window glass has the look of a motorcycle helmet visor. Up front an aggressive form of Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille dominates, along with hood scoop detailing and unique LED position lights. Optional
packages add a chrome grille surround, piano black highlights, fog lights and a massive panoramic sunroof. In profile, Veloster has Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” character lines, muscular wheel arches, body color door handles and mirrors, and wraparound headlights and taillights. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels are standard and two types of 18-inch wheels are available. The rear has a distinctive glass hatch, dual centered chrome exhaust tips and a black lower fascia that complements the front. On the inside, the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an available push-button starter. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, while the floor console resembles the seat of a bike. There are numerous interior metallic accents, with alloy pedals and a leatherwrapped steering wheel and shift knob also available. Under the hood, Veloster is powered by an all-new 1.6-liter GDI Gamma engine paired with either Hyundai’s six-speed manual transmission or the company’s first EcoShift dual-clutch transmission. Either way, the combination delivers a fuel-sipping 40 mpg on the highway. The all-new Gamma 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). GDI tech-
Veloster design was inspired by highperformance sport motorcycles, with window glass resembling a motorcycle helmet visor.
nology helps deliver highway fuel economy of 40 mpg, lower emissions and higher reliability. Through the use of GDI, the Gamma 1.6-liter engine delivers a peak output of 138 hp at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 pounds-feet at 4,850 rpm. The new engine features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating. Veloster comes standard with Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system, a multi-func-
tion seven-inch touch-screen display, Pandora Internet radio capability, Gracenote display technology with voice recognition, video game console connectivity with 115volt power outlet, and Bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition. Pricing for the 2012 Hyundai Veloster starts at $17,300. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Six meals for a ‘six pack’ BY BARI AUERBACH Did you know male and female fitness champions eat six or more times a day to maintain lean, muscular physiques? Today, nutritionists and weight-loss experts agree that frequently eating small meals and snacks is preferable to limiting yourself to three large meals or cutting calories to the point of virtual starvation. According to Jorge Cruise, author of The 3-Hour Diet, the book about eating the right foods every three hours to achieve weight loss goals, the biggest mistake you can make when trying to lose weight is to skip meals. “When you skip meals throughout the day your blood sugar plummets, causing you to overeat - and when you overeat, you gain weight,” Cruise says. “When you eat the right foods every three hours you will not feel hungry. Why? Because you will keep your blood sugar level stable and keep your appetite under control. When you’re in control of your appetite, you’re in control of your weight.” Can you also boost your metabolism by eating more? Well, not really more food, but rather “more often.” Experts say that eating at least six small meals a day can help you slim down your waistline. According to the American Journal of Epidemiology, people who eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day are 45% more likely to beat obesity than their “3 square meals a day” counterparts. What are the right foods for breakfast, a midmorning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner, and an optional nighttime snack? Optimally, there should be a low glycemic carb, lean protein, and “good” fat on your plate every time you eat. You should also follow portion size guidelines (for example, veggies should fill half your plate, carbs should be the equivalent of a Rubik’s Cube, and protein should be the size of a deck of cards).
A suggested grocery list is: (Proteins): Boneless/skinless chicken breast, turkey, easy to pour egg whites in cartons, cans of white tuna in water, wild salmon, low fat cottage cheese and plain flavored yogurt, protein powder for shakes (great tasting flavors of Jay Robb whey and egg white protein are available in individual packets or jars at Whole Foods Market); (Low Glycemic Carbs): Plain flavored oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes, Ezekiel breads, quinoa; (Fibrous Carbs): Spinach, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, Romaine lettuce; (Fruits): Apples, pears, strawberries; (Fats): Egg yolks, avocado, almond butter, flaxseed oil, olive oil Drinks, condiments and desserts that are also good choices for your list include Crystal Light, Arizona diet teas, Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate Fat Free with Calcium Hot Cocoa Mix, General Foods International Coffee Sugar Free French Vanilla Cafe Coffee Drink Mix, Starbucks iced grande Café Americano with Splenda, Walden Farms no calorie dressings, sugar free Smucker’s jelly, balsamic vinegar, mustard, salsa, sugar free Jello and popsicles, Skinny Cow low fat fudge bars. Preparing meals and snacks frequently throughout the day can take a little extra time and planning. But it’s worth it to eat at least six times a day and get that six pack or bikini body you’ve always wanted!

‘A Thanksgiving Story About a Soldier’..... BY CHIEF FRED MAAS Sunny Isles Beach Police Department
Every Thanksgiving Season for the past several years, I have written articles for our community newspaper. This year is no exception, but then, yes... it is an exception, because this year for me it is an EXCEPTIONAL story. It is about ONE remarkable human being who represents an entire GROUP of remarkable human beings. By way of Elaine Adler and the Aventura Marketing Council (AMC), Vice Mayor Lew Thaler of our city, contacted me about a program to help and to thank some of our Wounded War Veterans who had returned home from war and might need some well -deserved assistance. It seems that a contingent of generous, caring and grateful business persons from the Dania Beach Design District consolidated their efforts to provide some “room makeovers and renovations” to the homes of several specially selected wounded veterans. Herein begins the story. I immediately thought of Army Veteran Jason Recio. Jason’s life dream was to become a police officer. However, while in service to his country and in combat in Iraq, Jason was severely wounded as parts of both legs were blown away, rendering him incapacitated. Jason returned home to his wife and two children. His dream of supporting his family as a police officer was now shattered; or at least many would think so. Well, you haven’t met a SOLDIER. You haven’t met Jason Recio. Fully determined to overcome his injury, overcome
his disability and reach his goal, Jason focused on recovery and rehabilitation so that someday, he would pass the physical exam and fitness for duty in order to wear the Badge. I will not even attempt to describe the story of his pain, the suffering, and the setbacks he went thru on his road to recovery. I would rather tell of the courage, determination, acceptance and humility this man portrayed during that time. All with his eye on the one goal, one prize. With the help of support braces for his legs in the affected muscle areas, Jason proved to even the most disbelieving that he was able to perform and pass the physical agility tests required to become a police
officer. AND HE DID! Today, Officer Jason Recio is a Coral Gables police officer, serving in uniform patrol, proudly and with dedication and service to his country and now his community, for several years. Jason and his wife are also expecting their third child shortly. They are a FAMILY of GRATITUDE and LOVE, to be sure. So why is this story different from others about heroic soldiers? Well, when Jason was contacted about being selected for this very benevolent gesture by local businessmen, he asked to speak to me personally. I learned then that Jason was very appreciative of the honor and they sure could use the help but he was reluctant to accept it because there were many others who DESERVED it more. Can you say HUMILITY? Unbelievable, I thought. After all this man has done, and has been thru and the sacrifices he made and the efforts and struggles to accomplish his dream. The fact that his life was changed forever by war, in defense of his country! And he feels that others DESERVE it more? Well, no one who knows him was surprised by his response. Jason even cited examples of other soldiers and military he felt could use the help more. “That’s Jason!” was the constant refrain when I told people of his reluctance to be honored and recognized. Fortunately, for all of us, in spite of his reluctance and self denial, WE ALL insisted and Jason caved in. More for his family than himself, I am sure. With a new baby on the way, a 3rd child, who couldn’t use some help? Jason Recio, Army Veteran, Wounded Warrior, will be recognized on Saturday, November 5, 2011 for the Tribute to Veterans Military Room Makeover Program at the Dania Beach Design District at Noon, by those who just wanted to say “Thank You” for what you do and what you did for our country and for us. Jason will be among 7 others similarly recognized, each one with their own special story. But for me, I couldn’t think of a better or more deserving “Thanksgiving Story.” A story about a soldier, who almost died in service to his country for you and me and still has the HUMILITY to say “Thanks, but give it to someone else please”. Happy Thanksgiving Jason and family and to ALL military officers who serve and have served. There is no Thanksgiving table large enough to hold our love and gratitude for you......!

We’re now well on our way towards closing out 2011
Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH If you haven’t checked your calendar lately, don’t be surprised to see we now are in the Fourth Quarter and well on our way towards closing out 2011. Despite a rocky October start on Wall Street, there are new signs the U.S. economy still is improving, even if it is just minor gains. But for struggling homeowners around South Florida, the Fourth Quarter will bring more pressures on our paychecks and more opportunities to get ready for holiday spending. For the 28th straight month, the U.S. economy was able to squeak out gains according to the latest figures from the Institute for Supply Management. Holiday hiring is starting all over South Florida and will hopefully provide thousands of jobs for local unemployed workers. Still, unresolved problems in Europe and gridlock in Washington are expected to pull down investor confidence through December. For local families, the Fourth Quarter will mean more tough times paying bills, while price hikes and stalled salaries make it harder than ever to keep up with it all. A light at the end of the tunnel Those worried about the decline of their nest eggs, take heart. One of Wall Street’s biggest and oldest investment houses has joined the growing ranks of number crunchers seeing steady improvements recently from the U.S. economy. Some are even forecasting it may not be tipping back into the double-dip recession they were concerned about earlier this summer.
Charles Sachs of Corals Gables’ Evensky & Katz says, “I think what you’ve been seeing up until this point is the increasing probability that we could face a double-dip recession. Now we’re starting to see news that growth could be a little bit better than we thought.” Goldman Sachs economists confirm that the U.S. economy did better than expected last quarter, so they upgraded the strength of the recovery. That follows the latest slowly improving job numbers and new gains out of the U.S. construction and manufacturing sectors. In addition, the latest September numbers out of the auto industry show improving sales. Some economists now forecast Fourth Quarter sales numbers for the auto industry will be the best of the year for many brands. Still, some financial analysts warn that forecasting where the U.S. economy is heading may be tricky until unemployment starts dropping and job creation starts growing again. “Goldman is a very formidable shop out there but the prognosis is not just limited to them,” Sachs added. “We’ve seen about half a dozen shops out there talk about this. But remember, there are hundreds of economists out there. So to pick half a dozen who say one thing or the other is suspect. One needs to know that the problem with forecasting the future is… it’s very hard to do.” Even so, falling oil prices could lead to lower food and shipping costs through the end of the year if the trend continues. In fact, consumer confidence is seeing some slight improvements, which could lead to betterthan-expected holiday spending. And that could keep the U.S. economy moving in the right direction through early next year. Watch Al Sunshine’s “Money Watch” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You can find Al’s blog at cbsMiami.com.

Girl gets town’s support in battle with leukemia BY RAQUEL GARCIA
It is the stuff of nightmares, a phone call from your doctor on a Saturday night confirming a dire diagnosis — your daughter has acute lymphoblastic leukemia and needs to get to the emergency room immediately. This is the news that greeted young parents from New York, Lisa and Jason Nieves, in September 2010 after realizing their 5-year-old daughter Evangeline was more tired than usual, had inexplicable bruising and therefore required immediate testing. “It is one thing when you are on one side, but then when you cross over, it’s scary,” Jason said. “If it wasn’t for my wife and the kids who are so inspiring, I don’t know how I’d handle it. It’s a new world and I’m still trying to figure it out. Now that we are on this side of it, it’s for life.” Lisa and Jason were high school sweethearts who got married and started a family in the Northeast. When their oldest daughter Antonella was age 6; Evangeline, 4, and their baby Jascinda, 3 months old, Jason had an opportunity to transfer jobs. So they retired the snow shovel and started a new life in Cutler Bay. Lisa reflects on those early days when the test results came back on Evangeline. “I was in the emergency room in the hospital and I absolutely did not know what to do. I felt so alone. I wanted to go back to New York where my family was.” Because Lisa and Jason’s eldest daughter was in kindergarten in Whispering Pines Elementary School, the news spread quickly in her community and she did not have long to realize that she had quite the extended family in her new Cutler Bay home. “When I didn’t think I had anybody here, I literally had strangers coming to the door and bringing us dinner,” Lisa said.
The Nieves Family is pictured (l-r): Jason, Jascinda, Lisa, Antonella and Evangeline.
“They did not want to come in and visit, just drop off the food and tell us we were in their prayers; it was unbelievable. Cutler Bay is my home now and I truly have family here.” Not long after Evangeline’s diagnosis, Lisa and Jason were introduced to the Child Life Department at Baptist Children’s Hospital where their daughter goes for treatment. “The staff at the hospital — the oncologists, the social workers — has been incredible through this entire process. I was educated on how to explain to Evangeline and all the girls what was going on. We use real words with her and tell her she has leukemia, that it is her
blood that is sick and we prepare her for symptoms she might experience ahead of time.” In addition to the support of the Child Life Department at Baptist Children’s Hospital, which provided special Charlie Brown DVD’s about leukemia the family could watch together along with a spectrum of other supportive measures, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society also has been instrumental in helping the Nieves family stay positive and focused on a cure for Evangeline and others. The Evangeline Nieves Kicking Leukemia’s Butt Celebration and Fundraiser recently took place at Isles of Bayshore Club in Cutler Bay and proceeds
all went to benefit the “Light the Night” Walk sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to take place Nov. 3 at Bayfront Park. Evangeline has responded very well to her chemotherapy and spinal tap treatments along with her daily ritual of ingested medications. She did not suffer hair loss or a great deal of nausea as is typical for many patients. She now is in remission and will be receiving chemotherapy treatment until December 2012, after which she will have checkups every six months for the next five years until the doctors declare she is cured. Adriana LeCorgne, with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, said in the 60 years the society has been around the survival rate for leukemia has gone from 5 percent to 95 percent. In that time over $800 million has gone into research. The “Light the Night” Walk is one of the biggest events of the society with 5,000 participants walking last year from MiamiDade and Broward counties. “Last year when we attended the walk it was very emotional for me because Evangeline had just recently been diagnosed,” Lisa said. “But this year we have a big team, lots of supporters walking, and I can’t wait to see her in her ‘Survivor’ Tshirt. Cutler Bay doesn’t know this yet, but as soon as she is pronounced cured, I am shutting down the city for the whole day and declaring the day off for everybody.” With the kind of heartfelt support the community has rallied around the Nieves family, it would not be surprising if there was a local parade down S. Dixie Highway in honor of Evangeline on that day as well. To find out more about Evangeline Nieves and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society visit <http://pages.lightthenight.org/sfl/Merric k11/LNieves> or send email to Lisa Nieves at <keetomyheart@gmail.com>.

Author Massie back with new book, Catherine The Great BY GISELLE-MARIE ROIG
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Peter the Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, and The Romanovs returns with the longawaited, extraordinary biography, Catherine The Great (Random House; on sale Nov. 8). It has been 30 years since Robert K. Massie’s last major biography of a Russian leader, and years of research have gone into the mammoth task of recreating Catherine the Great’s remarkable life — a life of coups, plots, murders, regicide; of lovers, affairs, marital neglect; of intersections with Voltaire, Diderot, Mozart, Frederick the Great, Potemkin and dozens of other remarkable figures. Born Sophia of Anhalt-Zerbst, an unwanted female child of lesser Prussian nobility, Catherine was neglected by her parents, who hoped to marry her young and see her deposited far away in a rural castle. A series of coincidences led Empress Elizabeth of Russia to send for young Catherine as a prospective bride for the tsar-to-be, Peter — a fidgety, unhappy 16year-old still playing with toy soldiers on
his bed. Catherine and her mother set off in the dead of winter for St. Petersburg, wrapped in furs in horse-drawn sleds, with no idea that the teenage girl would soon experience

! Puppies chew on whatever they can get their mouths on. They do this because dogs learn through their mouths and a puppy is just starting to discover his world. Puppies chew for different reasons: for entertainment, to burn off energy, to appease curiosity or simply ease their teething. As puppies grow older, they generally grow out of it. However, during the time that the chewing is excessive, there are things you can do to limit damage: • Supervision: Like caring for a child, know where your pup is and what he's up to • Confinement: Limit you puppy to a safe and secure place, away from undesired items he may chew on, including electrical cords. You
might want to consider crate training your pup. • Incentive: Give him access to appropriate chew toys, if your pup then chews on the toys, praise him. Cheering you puppy's actions will strengthen the desired behavior. • Deterrent: If possible, treat inappropriate objects with a product designed to discourage chewing. Products like Grannick's Bitter Apple(R) and Fooey(R) will give any object an awful taste. Keep in mind that if the chew toy becomes torn or looks like pieces will fall off it's time to replace the toy. Pet Supermarket offers a wide variety of toys for puppies, from plush comfort toys to hard durable chew toys.
Your cat's claws are an important part of her overall being. They provide defense, aid in agility, and when a cat stretches out and claws a scratching post, she's also exercising important back and leg muscles. Here are some tips to help you manage your cat's claws. • In order to keep your cat happy and your furniture safe, provide a variety of scratching posts in different shapes, sizes, and materials. Rope, sisal, carpet, and cardboard posts are all available, and there should be at least one tall enough to accommodate a full-body "stretch and scratch". With plenty of surfaces to choose from, it's likely your cat won't feel the need to
use your sofa as her favorite scratching place. • Keeping your cat's claws trimmed also cuts down on unnecessary scratching. One of the newest and easiest ways to do this is with the PediPaws(tm) nail trimmer, which is painless and easy to use. There's also the option of "claw caps", which are made of a soft plastic material. You can find these claw caps at Pet Supermarket. Just ask us for Soft Claws(tm)!. At Pet Supermarket, we have everything you'll need to keep your kitty's paws groomed and exercised. We carry a large selection of scratching posts, kitty furniture, grooming aids, and much more. who ever lived. Catherine The Great’s range of influence is unparalleled: • She corresponded regularly with the French philosophers Diderot, d’Alembert, and especially Voltaire — all influenced her greatly, both personally and politically. • She was a pioneer in public health, building orphanages and becoming the first royal anywhere in Europe or Russia to be inoculated for smallpox, putting an end to fears and superstitions and saving millions of lives through her example. • She applied the principles of the Enlightenment to a new Russian constitution, The Nakaz, and institutes the Legislative Commission, nine years before Thomas Jefferson wrote the American Declaration of Independence and 22 years before Louis XVI’s summons to the Estates-General. • She acquired art collections containing pieces by Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, and a vast collection of British-owned art, cementing her as Europe’s foremost collector. During her reign, she amassed almost four thousand paintings and built a palace to house her collection — now known as the Hermitage Museum, one of the oldest
and largest museums in the world. • She oversaw the building of the Russian navy and the wars to expand Russia down to the Black Sea and into the Ottoman Empire, opening up Russian commerce and tipping the balance of power in the region to Russia’s favor. • To discourage infanticide among unmarried and impoverished mothers, she established with her own funds a foundling hospital…the anonymity of the mother was assured by a system of baskets, pulleys and bells. When a bell was rung in the street, a basket was lowered from an upper storey, the unwanted baby put in, and the basket was raised. All children, legitimate or illegitimate, from any class, were accepted, cared for, and educated. • She had 12 lovers: The first three, Saltykov, Poniatowski, and Gregory Orlov, before she reached the throne at 33, the other nine during her 34 years as empress. Of the twelve, she loved five: Poniatowsky, Orlov, Potemkin, Zavadovsky, and Alexander Lanskoy. For another three — Saltykov, Alexander Rimsky-Korsakov, and Alexander Mamonov — she felt passion. Three others — Vasilchikov, Simon Zorich and Alexander Yermolov — were quickly chosen and quickly discarded. The 12th and last, Platon Zubov, was in a category of his own. • She ruled Russia for a full three decades. Urgently readable and absolutely absorbing, Catherine The Great is the work of a master of narrative history, who in Catherine has found some of the greatest subject matter imaginable. Drawing from her explicit diaries and thousands of letters, Robert Massie has created a landmark work of history, bringing to life not only this singular woman, but an entire nation in the throes of extraordinary change. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Robert K. Massie, who will be in Miami on Nov. 19 for the Miami Book Fair International, was born in Lexington, KY, and studied American Studies at Yale and modern European history at Oxford, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar. He was president of the Authors Guild from 1987 to 1991. His other previous books include, Nicholas and Alexandra, Peter the Great (for which he won a Pulitzer Prize for biography), The Romanovs: The Final Chapter; Dreadnought: Britain, Germany, and the Coming of the Great War, and Castles of Steel: Britain, Germany, and the Winning of the Great War at Sea.
