he Aventura Arts & Cultural Center recently rolled out the red carpet for hundreds of Aventura Marketing Council members and students from adjacent ACES (Aventura City of Excellence School) invited to a “Sizzling 201314 Season Preview.” Also featured was a superb ‘Taste of Aventura’ Luncheon courtesy of Aventura Diner, The Cheese Course, CitySlickers, Costco North Miami Beach, Luca Bella, Macy’s Catering, Mo’s Bagels and Sicilian Oven. Special performances that afternoon made members feel as though they were at a live show, including pre-show entertainment by seven year-old pianist Brandon Goldberg; a petit performance by the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida and grand finale by Beatriz Malnic “Best Brazilian Singer Living in U.S.” Past Chairman Bob Hollander of Brown & Brown Insurance Miami, “understudy” for AMC Chairman Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman, welcomed guests to the magnificent venue as the curtain went up on one of the AMC’s most entertaining meetings. New and Improved Version

Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING It is almost impossible to pick up anything in a store today that does not say that it is the “New and Improved Version.” Like-wise, all of the technological gadgets in use today are constantly coming out with a “New and Improved Version.” You are constantly being urged to “upgrade”. If you don’t “upgrade” your systems will no longer be compatible with each other. It is possible that they will no longer operate. So, in a way you have no choice. Since the world, and everyone and everything in it, is changing, you need to change as well. If you are not going forward than you standing still which means you are actually going backwards. You are programmed by society and culture to believe that “new and improved” is always better. No matter how perfect things are or how perfect they seem, you need to be working on the new and improved version

of yourself. You could be perfect just the way you are but if the situation or others around you are changing then you have to change to adapt to those changes. You need to stay compatible to interact successfully. One way to do that is to be the best that you can be. Learn the golden rules and follow those rules. Learn and follow the Universal rules of cause and effect. Take care of yourself physically, psychologically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Value yourself and treat yourself with respect and love. Another way is to be happy. You need to upgrade to happiness and increase your compatibility with others. You must develop the ability to maintain positive emotions in yourself and you must become aware of other people’s emotions and non-verbal cues. Happiness is connected to sharing, giving, kindness, empathy, compassion, forgiveness, love and optimism. You will definitely enjoy and benefit from your upgrades. Will Florida Have Mandatory P.I.P. Auto Insurance Next Year? BY RUSSEL LAZEGA, Attorney and Author

Maybe the bigger question on the mind of many a pundit is – should we have mandatory P.I.P. next year? Critics of Florida’s No-Fault Insurance system complain that P.I.P. (a 40year old concept requiring car accident victims to first seek payment of basic medical expenses and lost wages through their own insurance before going after the person who hit you) has become obsolete and rife with fraud. P.I.P. supporters say it provides swift and fairly hasslefree coverage for basic necessities after an accident like medical expenses, lost wages and even household help. However, this year, a major push is underway to eliminate mandatory P.I.P. and replace it with a pure tort system where just the at-fault person’s insurer pays. At first blush it all seems rather first-grade fair. You broke it -- you fix it. Right? However, here are some hitches with scrapping P.I.P. and why we need to keep it: 1) Liability Cases Take Time (like Rip Van Winkle sort of time) to Get Settled: Anyone who has ever been through an accident case can tell you that getting an at-fault driver’s insurer to pay your claim is about as easy as yanking an 18-ounce T-Bone from the snarling jaw of a 120-pound Rottweiler. Enduring the insurance company merry-go-round takes time, patience and

money – something injury victims often have in scarce supply. It’s also why insurers aren’t just asking to get rid of Florida’s NoFault Law, they’re also asking to gut Florida’s Insurer Bad Faith Law – which penalizes insurers who wrongfully delay or deny claims. 2) Without Our Current Protections Against Insurer Bad Faith There Will Be Little to Stop Liability Insurers From Stonewalling Injury Victims. Accident victims currently rely on P.I.P. as their quick fix to cover: immediate medical expenses; lost wages, transportation expenses, etcetera. Take that away and consumers can’t weather the fight against the at-fault party. Worse yet, without a law that punishes insurers for unreasonable delay, the atfault party’s insurer can force nearly every case to trial with virtual impunity. Time is on their side. So remember, while no-fault might not be without fault, we all may want to consider what might replace it before we let insurers toss it. Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center hosts Spa Day More than 70 women received the royal treatment this past October, during the 10th Annual Ladies’ Spa Day, hosted by the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center. Participants – including cancer survivors and patients receiving cancer treatment at Mount Sinai – enjoyed a day of pampering and relaxation and received useful information to help them manage their cancer. Free services included manicures, massages, facials, hair styling and make-up application. In addition, guests participated in free energy therapy, meditation and yoga sessions. They also received information on healthy eating and integrative medicine, all presented by Dr. Mike Cusnir, a Mount Sinai hematologist/oncologist. Iliana Saavedra, who was diagnosed six years ago with terminal stage IV breast cancer that metastasized to her bones, was among the guests at the event. Saavedra has been able to enjoy life and her family, thanks to the treatment she received at Mount Sinai while in the care of her hematologist/oncologist, Dr. Elisa Krill–Jackson. “You see the collaboration and dedication of all the professionals at the cancer center, and I want them to know that I am grateful and appreciative for all that they do,” said Saavedra. “I have been going to this event every year for the past six years, and it just

Who’s winning the thermostat war in Florida households? Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has unveiled new information that may just reveal why your home suddenly got hotter (or colder). A September 2013 survey of more than 1,500 Florida adults, conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of FPL, revealed that among those who share their home with a spouse or partner, 49% – or nearly one out of every two people – admit to changing the thermostat setting without their partner’s knowledge. When confronted, the top reasons they used to excuse themselves include: 36% pretended they didn’t know how the thermostat changed; 12% blamed someone else; 12% said the thermostat must have mechanical problems; 9% claimed that the thermostat must have been bumped; and 3% blamed the dog or cat. “These survey results highlight the reality that most people in Florida would rather be comfortable, even if they don't want to admit it and may end up spending more money on energy in the process,” said Marlene Santos,

Madeline Dear Madeline, I am going to assume that you had the filler placed by a reputable physician and that it was hyaluronic acid filler, such as Restylane or Boletero. These fillers are the ones commonly injected into the area just below the eyelids, known as the tear trough. Injecting this area fills this valley and smoothes the eyelid-cheek junction. The filler in this area should be injected in the right depth. An injection placed too superficially can cause the eyelid to look puffy. If this occurs, there is a solution called hyaluronidase, which can dissolve the filler. Your physician can help you with this. If you had this done outside of a medical office, there is a chance that the filler may have been something else. Paying for what you value The County’s new fiscal year began on Oct. 1, but getting there wasn’t easy. On one hand, taxpayers were calling on their elected leaders to provide economic relief by keeping the property tax rates flat. Tough choices had to be made and in the end, while not every service emerged completely unscathed, essential services remain secure—at least for the time being. But the future of Miami-Dade County’s Public Library System, as well as the thousands of cats in dogs in the care of Animal Services Department remains uncertain. It’s been said that we most value that which we pay for through charitable contributions. It’s how we stand behind the causes we believe in. So in that spirit, Miami-Dade County is establishing a trust fund to allow the public to make voluntary contributions toward the county services that matter most to them. Reading Forest Trace’s extensive monthly resident activity calendar is an exhausting but exhilarating process! Daily exercise classes. Happy Hours. Nova University programs. Lectures, clubs, outings, parties and entertainment. Forest Trace residents certainly enjoy Active Senior Living. But there are also a plethora of activities that focus on Active Giving. Thanks to the ladies of Project Linus, a national organization that crafts blankets for needy children, a group of Forest Trace residents have become a “close-knit” group. Others dressed in Halloween costumes and visited Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to perform the song “Y.M.C.A.” for young patients and distribute special treat bags, room to room. Forest Trace golfers also recently participated in the ADRC Annual Swing for Seniors Golf Tournament and decorated Thanksgiving bags for Holocaust survivors. And this is just the past two

months. Time may be money, but active giving is a strong component of the Forest Trace community culture. Food collections are scheduled regularly, be it canned items for the City of Lauderhill or non-perishable food items for the WECARE food pantry. And the Forest Trace checkbook is always open, with a charitable component integrated into community competitions. Winners of the High Holiday Shofar-a-thon received checks for the charity of choice and a recent carnival raised $1,000 for the Ronald McDonald House. Thanksgiving-kah, the once-in-a lifetime joint celebration of Chanukah and Thanksgiving, is around the corner. Proceeds from this dinner will be used to fund construction of a new protected underground emergency department, fortified against nuclear, biological and chemical attack, at the Bnai Zion Medical Center in Haifa, a 450-bed hospital serving the northern communities of Israel that was on the front lines of the Second Lebanon War. LET’S TALK CARS The Honda Odyssey has been refreshed for 2014 with a host of powertrain, styling, interior, feature and safety upgrades, all designed to meet the needs of today’s family. Odyssey continues with five different trim levels available, including the wellequipped base LX model, the EX, the leather-trimmed EX-L, the feature-packed Touring, and the top of the line Odyssey Touring Elite. Key changes to the Odyssey minivan include the addition of a standard six-speed automatic transmission on all trims resulting in better fuel-economy ratings, enhanced safety equipment, cleaner front and rear exterior styling, plus revised instrumentation and electronic controls. With the addition of the six-speed automatic gearbox paired to the 3.5-liter, 24valve, SOHC, i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM), the

Odyssey continues as the fuel economy leader in the minivan segment, with all 2014 models getting EPA fuel economy ratings of 19/28 mpg city/highway. Odyssey’s refreshed styling gives it a youthful, sporty and upscale look, and new premium elements have been added such as black-trimmed headlights, available fog lights, a muscular hood and a black-surround grille. New body-color matched side mirrors and additional bright chrome trim add to the premium appearance. New rear styling and LED taillights with clear lenses and eye-catching perimeter “light pipes” add to the look. Weight savings come from the use of aluminum for the hood, front fenders and front suspension lower control arms. The LX model rides on 17-inch steel wheels, while EX and EX-L models have 17-inch aluminum alloys; Touring and Touring Elite models have 18inch aluminum alloy wheels. For the first time, all 2014 Odyssey models include standard Bluetooth HandsFreeLink connectivity, a four-way power passenger seat, Expanded View Driver’s Mirror, Pandora interface and an SMS text messaging function. New available features include the Honda exclusive LaneWatch blind spot display, Forward
