The Village at Gulfstream Park hosts reception benefiting Women’s International Film & Arts Festival

H

urricane Irene blew her way thru’ South Florida recently, but couldn’t dampen the spirits of the Aventura Marketing Council (AMC), the Hallandale Beach Area Chamber and the Greater North Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce! For months, the three not-for-profit business organizations worked together to plan an exquisite evening at the beautiful Village at Gulfstream Park. A festive reception in The Village’s Champions Plaza was to include great networking, live entertainment and food...all to benefit the Women’s International Film & Arts Festival (WIFF). But Mother Nature had something else in mind for the original date of October 17th. But this is South Florida....and we know how to adapt! On October 24th, hundreds of businesses representing the four organizations showed up to enjoy the amazing live performances of three young super-star singers: 11 year-olds Samuel Alexander (a mini Jon Bon Jovi) and Cameron Wheeler (upand-coming Celine Dion) and 17 year-old Josh Grosso (close your eyes and you hear Michael Buble), as well as a fire-eating belly dance show... all coordinated by the “master” himself... Listen to your Echo

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING An echo is a reflection of sound waves. It is the repetition of sounds or spoken words. You speak or make a sound and your words or sounds come back to you. You cannot shout out one thing and have a different thing return to you. It will return exactly as you say it. So, be careful what you say. Think before you speak. Am echo is also a reflection of what you are thinking and feeling. The Universe is a reflective mirror of your innermost thoughts, feelings and actions. What you send out into the world returns to you. Like begets Like. If you speak ill of someone, that will come back to you. If you even think ill of someone that will come back to you from others. If you are thinking fearful, angry and unhappy thoughts you will have fearful, angry and unhappy thoughts that will echo back to you. If you send out love and good deeds

that is what will return to you. If you want good things to come to you, then you must send out good things. Send out love, peace, patience, forgiveness, hope, kindness, understanding and joy. Send out positive affirmations. Those thoughts, statements and affirmations will reinforce your statements and give them more power when they come back to you. They will be magnified and intensified. You can also be an echo for the words, thoughts and beliefs of other people. You can imitate them and you can reflect their opinions or actions instead of your own. So, again be careful who and what you endorse. Listen to your echo and it will tell you exactly what you think and feel about yourself and others. The echo confirms your beliefs. If negative things are coming to you realize that you have the power to change them quickly into positives. If you are not receiving what you want from the Universe try sending out that which you want to receive. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. pledge, we can continually provide “Next Level Service,” which is combined with our promise of exceptional customer service. This allows us to provide our clients with a higher level of service than is typically expected.

Q) In your opinion, what is the biggest contributor to APM’s success? Our success is owed to the people who work for APM. We are a family-oriented company, which generates high employee moral and loyalty among our 500+ employees. Additionally, we hire only the best and most qualified within the industry.

Q) APM has placed in the South Florida Business Journal’s Best Places to Work, large company division, for four years straight. What makes APM stand out as a best place to work? Since the award is generated by the employees of the company, the fact that we have received awards for the past four years speaks volumes. We run the company as though every employee is a member of the family and strive to keep high employee moral. Additionally, we look to promote from within, and in most cases we can, given the trainings we provide. In short, we are here to assist our employees in achieving their individual lifetime goals.

Q) How does APM live up to its’ pledge, “Your Home is Our Business?” The owners of APC are also owners of multi-family residential properties across the country. Therefore, we take pride in making sure that the projects we manage for our clients are taken care of as though we own them ourselves. By living up to our

Q) With the recent changes to Florida Statute 718, which change do you think will have the biggest i mpact on the industry? The change with the biggest impact now allows associations to collect delinquent dues directly from renters. By going directly to the renter to collect the total monthly rent they can apply it to an owner’s account if a unit owner is behind on their maintenance fees. Additionally, they have the ability to evict tenants if they fail to pay rent as demanded. In some circumstances, such as when a Court approves a “Blanket Receivership,” an association may be able to rent and take control of a vacant unit, re-let the unit, collect the rent payments and apply those funds to all past due maintenance fees. These changes allow the associations to better control their cash flow and delinquency status, reducing the overall number of delinquent units.

Class Warfare-An Income Tax on the Wealthy

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS The top 1% own most of the wealth of the nation, a staggering recession with millions of people unemployed, an Anti-Wall Street protest leading to a semi-organized group who successfully help oust the Republicans from Congress and the Democrats then introduce a 2% income tax on the wealthy, over Republican opposition. Sound familiar? Sorry, it was the era of the 1890’s Out of the financial distress, including falling farm prices, came a tornado of AntiWall Street protesters; the People’s Party, known as Populists. They believed that organized wealth was “sucking the country dry with monopolistic prices, extortion rates and tariffs.” In the 1890 elections, the Republicans (party of big business) were swept out of power. The new House had 235 Democrats and 88 Republicans. In June 1894, the Congressional Democrats enacted a 2% income tax on the wealthy. Missouri

Democratic Congressman David Armond stated, “The passage of the bill will mark the dawn of a brighter day, the laughter of well fed children …God hastened the era of equality in taxation and opportunity!” The Republican spokesmen “went into a virtual panic,” despite their having previously imposed a higher federal income tax during the Civil War that the Supreme Court had ruled was constitutional. Senior Republican Senator Sherman stated, “The income tax was socialism, communism and devilism.” The Dean of the New York Bar argued before the U.S. Supreme Court that the income tax was “a communist march on private property.” The decision came down on May 20, 1895. The Court “reversed itself and voted, five to four, that the Democratic income tax was unconstitutional.” The same day, minority Justice John Harlan denounced the decision as a “monstrous, wicked injustice to the many for the benefit of the favored few.” Senior Justice Stephen J. Field wrote the strongest opinion against the income tax, stating, “It was an assault upon capital,” and the beginning of “a war of the poor against the rich.” The issue was resolved when the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified on February 13, 1913, which broadened the right of Congress to levy an income tax.

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center recognizes Lung Cancer Awareness Month with a variety of events Lung Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated nationally each November and Aventura Hospital along with the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center have taken the lead in raising awareness of the risks associated with lung cancer and the new innovative treatment options available. On Thursday, Nov. 10th at noon, Aventura Hospital and the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center will sponsor a free educational seminar on lung health at the Aventura Recreational Center located at 3375 NE 188 Street in Aventura. Luis Echarte, MD, Critical Care Pulmonology and Lynn Seto, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgery, will host a community lecture outlining the latest advancements in lung cancer detection and treatment, while offering healthy and preventive measures. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death for both men and women, according to the American Cancer Society. Although the disease is rare among people under the age of 45, more people die from lung cancer than from colon, breast and prostate cancers combined. These numbers include both smokers and non-smokers; the risks are much greater for smokers. During The Great American Smokeout, recognized on Nov. 17th, Aventura Hospital will kick off its smoking cessation classes for staff and the community.

Smoke-free champions will be on hand in front of the cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to answer questions and provide support to those making the decision to become tobacco-free. Preventative measures, like smoking cessation, comprise only half the battle against lung cancer. The Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center provides patients leading technology in cancer detection, like SuperDimensions — the most advanced and complete lung navigation system. Using a navigation system similar to GPS, SuperDimensions allows physicians to offer pinpoint precision in the diagnosis of lung lesions earlier, minimizing the need for high-risk procedures and maximizing survival rates. In addition to offering a full range of diagnostic services, the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center offers the first and only Synergy S treatment system in South Florida. This minimally invasive advanced lung cancer therapy provides the advanced treatment capabilities of stereotactic radiosurgery. For more information or to RSVP for the free seminar on the smoking cessation options provided at Aventura Hospital, call 1-888-256-7692. For more information on lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, call the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center at 305-682-2151.

Pets Are People Too

Denise Rubin TALKS REAL ESTATE That’s just where I got the newest member of my family “Mercedes”. So now “Bentley” has a little sister. They are both teacup Yorkshire Terriers. 8 years apart I spotted each at the “Pets are People Too” (teacups shop in Pembroke Pines) and instantly fell in love. I happen to live in a pet friendly community “Island Way” in Waterways- named 2006’s Most Beautiful Community in Aventura. Sadly many communities and condos are becoming less and less dog friendly both restricting size and number of pets allowed. A tremendous amount of the associations have disallowed renters to lease with pets even in condos where owners are not restricted. You always see dogs in the strictest of buildings that are “grandfathered in!”After all pets are like our children. And add that to all to the rescues and Humane Society adoption centers. Pets Are People Too recently added a pet rescue for little dogs “The Glimmer of Life Foundation.” Dog and Cat charities and rescues are more and more attractive and in vogue. Considering that we will spend 50 billion dollars on 78 million pets this year, according to the American Pet Association. Fancy beds are sold up to $900 and there is a Ralph Lauren crocodile do bag for $18,000. Accessories, clothes, beds, bags etc. At “Pets are People Too” everything from a carrier to a doggie crib, to custom leopard stairs to reach my bed, to the swarvoski crystal gowns and tuxedos, downtown doggie clothes, harnesses and so much more are found.

So, what does one to do if they have a mid size or large dog and want to live in a particular community that disallows them. It has become increasingly difficult and while owners don’t mind rules such as carrying their dogs through a lobby and put up with all the regulations; they want their dogs to be able to live with them. I wake up workout at Equinox. Then I come home and give my dogs a workout by playing fetch. Dog parks are popping up all over. They are part of the family after all. More furniture manufactures are selling custom designed dog crates- “houses” that look like furniture and even carpet companies are making dog compatible carpets. Pet spas, pet hotels, pet mobiles like the one that comes to my home “Doggies Groom Mobile”, pet sitters, pet trainers, and pet whisperers are also busy. My friend Cindy just paid $100 an hour to a dog therapist to try to get her dog to stop barking. My team members Judi and Stuart took their dogs to a dog dermatologist for allergies. The dog clothing business is booming too. I know my dogs each have an armoir to house their wardrobes. We have Veternarian specialists and nothing is too much for our pet as is for our children. People are restricted to a certain number per bedroom, but children aren’t restricted due to weight or size. There are no lengths a parent will go to for their pet so they should get more active on condo associations and get these pet unfriendly bylaws changed! So these rigid restrictions won’t cause more homeless pets, and more dogs and cats to be killed each year. So if our pets are loved and treated as a family member the same rules should apply- for “Dogs are People Too!” Call Denise Rubin 305-409-0019 for all your real estate needs and visit www.deniserubin.com for listings and virtual tours.

Florida ‘Fuels Up’ during Electric Vehicle Stakeholder Summit With electric vehicles (EVs) becoming part of the mainstream, Florida Power & Light Company hosted the EV Stakeholder Summit to discuss how electric transportation will affect our communities and prepare for the exciting road ahead. Experts from Nissan, General Motors and Ford Co. discussed best practices for preparing Florida for the expansion of EV use and were joined by FPL representatives, the Gold Coast Clean Cities Coalition and the South Florida Treasure Coast Regional Planning Councils. FPL’s role in the Summit was to ensure the reliability of the electric grid, provide information about EV-charging to its customers, the employment of EVs in its own fleet and removing barriers to widespread EV adoption. Some of the benefits of EV are: Lower costs: powering an EV approximately 80 percent less than a conventional, gasoline-powered vehicle Cleaner air: emissions-free operation reduces air pollution and greenhouse gases Exciting technology: smooth, fast acceleration makes EVs fun to drive Energy independence: by reducing fuel consumption, EVs can help reduce dependence on foreign oil The support of EVs has also been revved up

thanks to a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and the South Fla. Regional Planning Council, Gold Coast Cities Coalition and FPL. The grant will support the development of a plan to increase EV infrastructure and vehicle use within Miami-Dade, Broward, Indian River, Martin, Monroe, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties. While most EV drivers are expected to charge at home, drivers of plug-in vehicles will have more options as the infrastructure expands. “FPL is committed to supporting the growing use of electric vehicles in Florida. As demand grows, we are focused on meeting our customers’ needs and ensuring our service remains strong,” said FPL’s Electric Vehicles Program Manager Anne-Louise Seabury. 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 may be best Jeep ever Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The jury is still out, but many auto buffs are labeling the all-new 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 as the best Jeep ever. And it may very well live up to that billing. It is certainly the most powerful, technologically advanced, high-performance Jeep ever put on the road. In essence, it’s a combination of Jeep’s well-known capability and utility merged with the advanced performance engineering from Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team. Along with all the power, there is some style and beauty. A new sculpted hood with functional dual black heat extractors gives added engine cooling. The integrated lower front grille is painted in gloss black and a newly designed underbody belly pan has integrated brake ducting to improve cooling and fade performance. A one-piece front fascia holds new LED

multi-function daytime running lights and a body-colored upper front grille with a unique black screen background and chrome bezel inserts adds to the aggressive look. New split five-spoke 20-inch forged aluminum wheels ride on P295/45ZR20 Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season run-flat tires or available Pirelli P Zero Three-season. Powering the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is Chrysler’s all-new 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 with Fuel Saver Technology that delivers 470 hp and 465 pounds-feet of torque, an improvement of 50 hp and 45 pounds-feet of torque over the 6.1-liter HEMI it replaces. An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing delivers maximum low-end torque while optimizing high-end power across a wider rpm band. Specifically, 90-percent of peak torque is available between 2,800 and 6,000 rpm, allowing for jack rabbit-quick standing starts and improved straight-line performance. Standard Fuel Saver Technology and a new active valve exhaust system allow four-cylinder operation to engage over a wider rpm range to deliver both improved fuel efficiency — a 13-percent increase on the highway — and an extended range of

450 miles on a tank of gas. On the road, the new Grand Cherokee SRT8 delivers positive handling and clocks 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, 0-100 mph in just over 16 seconds and runs the quarter mile in about 13.5 seconds, with a top speed of 160 mph. It brakes from 60-0 mph in a quick 116 feet. Standard steering wheel mounted paddle shifters join the standard Auto Stick on the floor. Both are mated to a proven automatic transmission, allowing a choice of shifting on the road and the racetrack. Both methods give the driver the ability to shift

while the transmission controller calibration prevents over revving the engine. Jeep engineers also have improved handling on the Grand Cherokee with a new SRTtuned adaptive damping suspension managed by the new Jeep Selec-Track system. Base price on the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is $54,470. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. ‘An Evening with Lucie Arnaz’ benefits City of Hope program BY LAURA KIM

City of Hope will celebrate cultural, historic and medical milestones in “An Evening with Lucie Arnaz” to benefit the institution’s world-renowned bone marrow transplantation program. The Nov. 12 benefit show at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center celebrates the 35th anniversary of City of Hope’s pioneering bone marrow transplant program, which recently performed its 10,000th transplant, an achievement only a few centers in the world have reached. Lucie Arnaz, iconic entertainer and daughter of showbiz royalty Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, commands the stage to sing show stoppers from her Broadway debut, They’re Playing Our Song, along with new arrangements of favorite standards by such luminaries as Ira Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer. Top ‘holiday eating’ tips BY BARI AUERBACH If once again, one of your New Year’s resolutions will be to lose some weight, you can get an early start on winning the “battle of the bulge” despite all those holiday party buffets and Christmas cookies. Here are some of the best holiday eating tips that can help you avoid tipping the scale without taking the fun out of celebrating: * Eat a light snack or energy bar before going to holiday parties. It is not a good idea to arrive at a party famished. Not only are you more likely to overeat, but you’re also less likely to resist the temptation of eating the higher fat and higher calorie foods. * Pay attention to portion sizes. Instead of eating twice what you usually do, put down your fork when you start feeling full. * Be physically active every day. Exercising can help relieve stress, regulate appetite, and burn up extra calories from holiday eating. * To avoid recreational eating, consciously make one plate of the foods you really want. Eat slowly and when you’re done, pop a mint or stick of gum into your mouth, get a tall glass of water and sip on it throughout the night, or position yourself away from the buffet table or food trays to keep yourself from overeating. * Reduce the fat in holiday recipes. There are plenty of low fat and low calorie substitutes that really taste good. Try using applesauce in place of oil in your favorite holiday breads; use egg substitutes in place of whole eggs; use plain nonfat yogurt in place of sour cream; and believe it or not,

black beans are a great secret ingredient in lower fat brownie recipes! * Choose your beverages wisely. Alcohol is high in calories. Liquors, sweet wines and sweet mixed drinks contain 150-450 calories per glass – but water and diet sodas are calorie-free. If you choose to drink, select light wines and beers, and use non-alcoholic mixers such as water and diet soda. Limit your intake to one or two alcoholic drinks per occasion. And, watch out for calories in sugary sodas, fruit punch, and egg nog. * Bring a healthful dish to a holiday party. This is one way to ensure you’ll have something healthy to eat while sharing something nutritious with your family. * Learn to say no. Get in the habit of saying, “No thanks, I don’t eat dessert” without feeling the need to explain yourself. At first you may be met with some resistance, but eventually people will get the point and stop asking you. * Enjoy good friends and family. Although food can be a big part of the season, it doesn’t have to be the focus. The important thing to remember is balance, moderation and that it’s ok to take a “holiday” from dieting and indulge every once in a while!
