Henry Menendez from HNO Productions provided all the sound for the evening’s program while CPA Craig Rogoff from Melnick Lilienfeld & Castonguay served as the official tabulator and photographer Juan Saco Miranoff captured the images throughout this exciting evening. Del Rio joined the ever-popular Emcee George Neary from the Gr. Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) onstage

Gift behind the Gift
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING The final countdown has begun. Only a few more shopping days left to find the perfect gift. Of course, as they say, “It’s the thought that counts.” While this is very true, it is also true that it is the gift behind the gift that counts, as well. While you are shopping, focus on something that will tell the other person that you are interested in them and that you are paying attention to them; who they are and what they are. Celebrate their uniqueness. Support their dreams. Then focus on what you wish for each person and what you want them to have in their life. If you can, try to avoid a random gift. However, a random gift is better than no gift at all. Remember, Gifts often define a relationship. “Little gifts maintain friendship and great gifts maintain love.” The gift you receive from someone
often gives you more than the item itself. A beautiful evening bag may contain your friend’s wish that you have a wonderful party to attend so you can use it or a wonderful person to go out with. A new golf club may contain the wish that the person will improve their game and lower their score. Your loved one or friend is wishing something wonderful for you with their choice of gift. Unfortunately, not everyone will see the wish or gift behind the gift. In those cases, it might be a good idea to include a brief note to explain your choice. Even if someone dislikes your gift, they will not dislike the thought behind it. The gift behind the gift is a gift in itself. If you do dislike your gift, do not show it and do not say it. Never hurt the giver’s feelings or belittle their choice. Be sensitive and kind. Keep an open mind and an open heart and show appreciation to the giver and their intentions and efforts. Even Santa doesn’t always get it right.

FPL shares eight tips to lower your bill this holiday season Festive lights, full ovens and house guests are staples of the holiday season – but all that fun can be not so jolly on the bank account. FPL is helping customers save energy and money this holiday season with Eight Tips to Save this Holiday Season. 1. LED lights are the bright choice to get more for your money. The amount of power it takes to operate one 7-watt incandescent bulb could power two 24-foot LED strings enough for a six foot tree, they also last about 10 times longer. 2. Set timers for your holiday displays to turn off before bedtime so there is no need to burn the lights all night long. 3. Switch out guest room and common area lighting to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs for overnight guests. Each CFL bulb you install will save about $50 in energy costs over its lifetime. 4. Remind guests to turn off lights and fans when they leave the room. Turning off one ceiling fan and one light when you leave the room can save more than $7 a month on your electric bill. 5. Ovens lose a lot of heat when opened and require significant energy to heat back up to the appropriate temperature. Instead, when you have to sneak-a-peek, turn the
oven light on and look through the interior window. 6. Choose glass or ceramic pans for the oven – they heat faster than metal ones and allow you to set the temperature 25 degrees lower than a recipe suggests for the same cooking time. 7. Use smaller appliances such as crockpots, microwaves and toaster ovens when possible. They are more energy-efficient for side dishes or small meals. 8. When it comes to gifts, opt for a laptop over a desktop computer. Laptops require 50 to 80 percent less power than a desktop computer. For more ways to save energy yearround, take an Online Home Energy Survey at www.FPL.com/OHES.

O&G wins 2013 National Mature Media Awards The 22nd annual National Mature Media Awards Program recently recognized O’Connell & Goldberg’s (O&G) inventive PR and marketing efforts with three awards on behalf of the agency’s client, Forest Trace, a South Florida luxury retirement community. The awards honor the nation’s finest marketing, communications, educational materials, and programs designed and produced for older adults. Instagramparents, an Instagram contest featuring submitted photos of South Florida grandparents, was created by O&G in celebration of National Grandparents Day. The contest received a Silver Award in the social media category. The agency won a Bronze Award in the Consumer/Public Relations Campaign category for the Octogenarian Flash Mob and a Merit Award in the Marketing and Advertising Campaign category for The Landing of the UFOs, a Veterans Day Program. The Octogenarian Flash Mob was performed to rave reviews in a local mall as part of the celebration of Older Americans Month, a national observance, with the goal of changing the stereotype of aging. The UFOs (aka United Flying Octogenarians), landed their planes at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport before joining 70 Forest Trace veterans for an honorary ceremony and
luncheon. According to O&G CEO Barbara Goldberg, the firm has developed an acute understanding of targeting the aging population in today’s market. Under the leadership of staff member Karen Dennis, the agency continues to produce ongoing creative content to effectively influence senior consumers and baby boomers. Forest Trace events are often featured on the front page of print media, demonstrating the firm’s ability to develop and garner good news. “We serve as visual storytellers for our clients,” said Goldberg. “And while we see such great opportunities to effectively market to this often forgotten age demographic, it’s really about creating relevant content and making it newsworthy and entertaining-no matter the age. That’s our sweet spot.” For the National Mature Media Awards, experts from across the United States judged nearly 1,000 entries for overall excellence of design, content, creativity and relevance to the senior market. Based in South Florida and New York City, O&G prides itself on connecting clients with key audiences and keeping them relevant in the marketplace. Its unique approach impacts numerous industry sectors including retail, hospitality/F&B, real estate, education, healthcare, not-for-profit and corporate

FIU professor works to protect South Florida’s coral reefs On any given day, Deron Burkepile, assistant professor of marine science at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay Campus can be found conducting research on how humans impact marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and what actions can be carried out to mitigate resulting damage. His latest work focuses on common South Florida pollutants from sewage, agricultural practices and other sources that can lead to a rapid increase in coral disease, as well as bleaching among nearby coral reefs. The three-year study examined the effects of increased exposure to nitrogen and phosphorous in a controlled testing site. It was one of the largest and longest experiments conducted to evaluate nutrient loading on coral reefs. The study, published in “Global Change Biology,” determined these common pollutants doubled the prevalence of disease and more than tripled the amount of coral bleaching, according to Burkepile. “The results of the study actually offer hope that local decisions to mitigate nutrient pollution can help corals survive the increasing stress of rising sea surface temperatures
as a result of climate change,” Burkepile said. “While slowing climate change will take coordinated, international action over decades, reducing nutrient pollution on coral reefs can have immediate effects on reef health and conservation.” For years researchers have observed the decline in coral reef health where sewage outflows or use of fertilizers, in urban or agricultural areas have caused an increase in the loading of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. But until now, almost no large long-term experiments have been conducted to pin down the impact of nutrient overloading to separate them from other possible causes of coral reef decline. According to the findings, once the addition of pollutants stopped, the corals recovered within months. A leading marine ecologist, Burkepile has completed two missions at FIU’s Aquarius Reef Base (http://aquarius.fiu.edu/), the world’s only undersea research lab located off the coast of Key Largo. For more information on Burkepile and FIU’s environmental research, visit seas.fiu.edu or call 305-919-6000.

Game Changing TIVO Service Goes Live in Miami with Atlantic Broadband
David Isenberg, CMO for Atlantic Broadband BY LEE STEPHENS
Atlantic Broadband is one of the cable providers available to Aventura residents and they have big news. David Isenberg, Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer for Atlantic Broadband was in town last week to announce that Atlantic Broadband has joined forces with the new TiVo, and will be offering its customers the ultimate TV experience with the new T6 platform. And by joined forces they mean the TiVo T6 platform is built into Atlantic Broadband’s new suite of double and triple play bundles. So now along with blazingly fast Internet speeds and unlimited local and long distance calling anywhere in U.S., Atlantic Broadband customers will receive all the bells and whistles of TiVo’s newest platform without purchasing a $600 receiver. Bundle prices start as low as $99.99 per month. Existing Atlantic Broadband DVR customers can easily upgrade to the new TiVo service for only $10 more per month. Our analysis showed the service to be priced well under the typical AT&T U-Verse package. It might be the time to do some comparison shopping of your own. With the TiVo platform, users can record up to six shows at once (so long family squabble), find recently deleted shows (an-
other argument starter), and deliver full DVR service (such as pause and rewind) on every TV in the home. Plus the service allows viewers to stream favorite shows on any mobile device in home, and the ability to download and take entertainment with them when they travel. The unique “What To Watch Now” feature provides shortcuts to popular shows on right now so you’ll avoid the aggravation of endlessly scrolling through “the guide.” Another improvement is that you do not need to point the remote at the box in order for it to work. In fact you can hide the box if you want. But don’t because when you lose your remote a button on the box will create a beep in the remote and help you find it. Atlantic Broadband, is the nation's 13th largest cable operator, serving Bal Harbor, Bay Harbor Islands, Golden Beach, Miami Beach, North Bay Village, South Miami, Sunny Isles Beach and Surfside and partially served areas such as Aventura and Pinecrest. “The new TiVo service from Atlantic Broadband is changing the face of cable, and we’re excited to be the first to launch in the Miami area, providing new and existing customers with the ultimate television experience,” said David Isenberg, Atlantic Broadband's Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer.

Miami Dolphins visit Aventura Waterways K-8 Center The Miami Dolphins capped off their weekly school visits by staying close to home, making an appearance at Aventura Waterways K-8 Center for a Gatorade Junior Training Camp (JTC), with nearly 400 students participating in the event. The JTC, which the Dolphins provide to two schools per week, consisted of six interactive football drills, cheerleader routines and the “Dol-Fit” message. “It’s a great opportunity for the kids to get outside and learn something that they don’t get to do in the classroom and have a great experience,” Aventura Waterways Physical Education teacher Jennifer O’Connor said. “The kids listen to what’s coming from the Dolphins and it allows your message to sink in.” The camp began with Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Coordinator Troy Drayton speaking to the students about the importance of education, staying physically fit and making positive choices, all components of the “Dol-Fit” message. Then, the students were treated to six football stations, which emphasized the fundamentals of football while receiving some interactive instruction from Drayton, a former NFL tight end, and the rest of the Dolphins Youth Programs staff. “I think the students of Aventura Waterways did a great job today,” Drayton said. “They listened to what we had to say and were very eager to participate in the drills; I enjoyed our visit.” Aventura Waterways K-8 Center, which serves approximately 1,900 students, strives to provide students with the very best education coupled with broad and diverse experiences. The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ mission is to emphasize the importance of
education, physical fitness, and positive choices for kids in a safe and fun environment For more information on the Miami Dolphins Youth Football Clinic, Youth Football Camps or school visits, contact the Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Department at (305) 943-7272 or visit the Dolphins Academy website.

Kia Sorento redesigned for 2014; given new engine platform Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS After spending a week behind the wheel of the Kia Sorento, I now understand why the people who own them have been raving about them. They are just that special. For 2014, Sorento adds a top-of-the-line trim level to its lineup — the SX Limited — and the popular U.S.-built crossover vehicle has been given an all-new platform, sophisticated new styling cues and significant improvement to ride, handling and comfort. In fact, over 80 percent of the parts are either all-new or significantly redesigned, including a new 3.3-liter GDI V-6 engine. The all-aluminum V-6 powerplant produces 290 hp at 6,400 rpm and 252 poundsfeet of torque at 5,200 rpm. It’s available optionally on the LX and EX and as standard equipment in the SX and SX Limited. Power is routed to either the front wheels or, optionally, to all four wheels using an enhanced Torque On Demand all-wheel
drive system that seamlessly directs power to the tire with the most traction. Also new is Torque Vectoring Cornering Control (TVCC) that aids stability under certain driving conditions, The 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder engine also is back for 2014 as standard equipment in the LX and EX and replaces the previously standard 2.4-liter MPI 4-cylinder. With 191 hp at 6,300 rpm and 181 poundsfeet of torque at a low 4,250 rpm, the lightweight all-aluminum powerplant is efficient enough for day-to-day driving demands. Sorento comes standard with a smooth shifting six-speed automatic transmission. Also standard, electric power steering replaces the hydraulic unit from the 2013 model, which improves steering feel and reduces weight. The new available FlexSteer offers drivers a choice of three steering modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport. The 2014 Sorento rides on an all-new chassis that increases torsional rigidity by 18 percent for improved ride and handling. To the rear, a reinforced multi-link setup utilizes new bushings and mounts to better isolate road noise vibration, while the compact design allows for more interior space. Redesigned front and rear fascias
New Kia Sorento rides has a lower, broader look from the front and a wider stance at the rear.
enhance the Sorento’s road presence with a lower, broader look from the front and a wider stance at the rear. The new Sorento rides on redesigned 17-, 18- and — a first for the Kia CUV — larger 19-inch wheels. On the inside, the new Sorento has a redesigned instrument panel that combines technology with ergonomics. On EX trims and above, the large center gauge cluster features a seven-inch TFT LCD that projects a digital speedometer flanked by easyto-read analog instruments for the
tachometer, fuel level and engine temp. The TFT LCD readout also displays trip and vehicle information, along with navigation updates (optional). The MSRP on the 2014 Kia Sorento ranges from $24,100 to $40,100. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers.
