Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING A rather simplistic view of the world is that the world is divided into Givers and Takers. Which one are you? If you are a taker you are on the wrong side in life. Do everything you can to get on the other side of this great divide and be a giver. The secret of giving is to give with a pure and generous heart. Give without any thought or desire for reward. The spirit in which you give is as important as what you give. Through pure giving you express your higher self and your love and respect for others. The art of giving should be cultivated. Be an artist and create ways to give. Be inventive. Be resourceful. Be generous. Buy something that captures the other person’s personality or essence. Or, give of yourself, your talents, your expertise and your skills. Give what you can. Give as

often as you can. If you are empty spiritually, mentally, emotionally and psychologically you will have nothing to give. Enrich yourself so that you will have something unique and exceptional to give to others. The gift of giving is the way it makes you feel and how it opens your heart and enhances your life. A gift is a wonderful thing. It can bring immense pleasure and joy to both the giver and the receiver. The very act of giving becomes a benediction in itself. It blesses you and it blesses the recipient. When you give you experience how rich you truly are. The more you give the richer you will be and the more you will have to give. Give without reason. Give whether the person deserves it or not. Give something to someone every day even if it is only a compliment or a kind word of encouragement and support. Notice others, talk to them and listen to them. Remember, you have the power to light up their world and your world with the gift of something as simple as your smile.

Washington’s Erratic Mother

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS One of the strangest mysteries of George Washington’s life was his strained relationship with his mother, Mary Ball. As a child, George feared his mother; his father, Gus, died when George was 11 years old and away on business so often that George remembered him vaguely. When George was appointed Military Commander of the Colonial army, Mary told her neighbors that her son was not qualified for the position. She never acknowledged her sons wartime heroism, never left behind a single memorable sentence about George’s remarkable success, “while never hesitating to level a steady stream of criticism against him.” Although Mary was wealthy with farms and slaves through inheritance and George was a respectful and dutiful son who provided her with additional support, her continual complaint against George was he did not provide her with sufficient funds. Prior to the Revolution, George set up

his mother with a lovely house in Fredericksburg and instructed his own property manager to attend to her financial needs during his absence, including paying her taxes. George never heard from his mother for years and suddenly “learned about her alleged problems in a mortifying manner.” In February 1781 (during the Revolutionary War), George “discovered one of the most bizarre letters of his career.” To his total embarrassment, Mary “had instigated a movement in the Virginia Legislature to provide her with an emergency pension; alleging that she was in great financial need owing to the heavy taxes (which George had paid).” Mary had progressed “to dangerously erratic.” By throwing herself on the charity of the state, she spread the charge that George had neglected her. Terribly hurt by his mother’s petition, George assured the Assembly that “she has not a child who would give their last sixpence to relieve her from real distress. We are all hurt by her petition, as we know that she has ample income on her own.” George asked the Assembly to desist from taking any action.” Mary died a year after George became president, not having attended his presidential inauguration or having sent a word of congratulations to her son.

Mount Sinai welcomes back its tiniest patients

The Mount Sinai NICU Graduating Class of 2012

On Friday, December 7th, Mount Sinai Medical Center welcomed back more than 100 patients for its 17th annual Preemie Party. This year’s “Under The Sea” themed celebration reunited babies who defied the odds in the Mount Sinai Abess Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and their parents, with the doctors and nurses who cared for them. “This is probably the highlight of my year,” said Tony Adams, M.D. chief of the NICU department at Mount Sinai. “It’s a great opportunity to celebrate life.” Mount Sinai neonatologists, Jose Antonio Adams, M.D., and Ignacio Zabaleta, M.D., have worked together at Mount Sinai for more than two decades, taking care of babies from birth to discharge and providing a level of continuity rare in larger NICUs. “Every child is a miracle for us,” said Dr. Zabaleta. “It’s fantastic that God gave us the opportunity to save these little babies.” Among the returning patients, who ranged in age from babies to teenagers, was high school senior Alexis Levy and her parents, Stacy and Adam Levy. Alexis was born in the Mount Sinai NICU 18 years ago after just 29 weeks in the womb, 11 weeks premature, and weighing a little over two pounds. The Levys lived in Davie at the time and drove to and from the hospital, every day, twice a day for the 59 days that Alexis was in the NICU. “I wouldn’t have delivered anywhere else,” said mother, Stacy Levy. “Dr. Zabaleta and Dr. Adams were the only two men I wanted treating my child. I was not ready, just because of distance, to cut those men out of my life by any means. I don’t know if I still am. They are household names in our home.” By the time Alexis turned 13, she wanted to find a way to thank the doctors who saved her life. In lieu of presents at her bat mitzvah, she asked her guests to donate money to Mount Sinai’s NICU department. She successfully raised over $4,300. Alexis. “I’m proof of their amazing work.” Today, Alexis is in the top 10% of her graduating class, a member of her school’s National Honors Society and is preparing to attend college in June. She wants to study marketing and communications. The Mount Sinai NICU provides the highest level of neonatal care and adheres to stringent medical treatment standards. Compared to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mount Sinai’s NICU survival rates for low birth weight babies are above the national average. The annual Mount Sinai Preemie Party is held every December, a symbolic time to reflect on the triumphs of these tiny miracles and to remind everyone that, sometimes, the best gifts come in small packages.

2013 Subaru Outback has new engine, revised styling

LET’S TALK CARS The Subaru Outback has been a company mainstay since it was introduced in Japan in 1994. For 2013, it gets revised styling, a new and more efficient powertrain, and it debuts the new EyeSight driver-assist system. Additionally, chassis enhancements improve both ride quality and agility, and there are new amenities and audio/infotainment capabilities. Outback has a restyled front end, with new headlights, grille, front bumper and fog lights, giving it a more powerful appearance. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive distinguishes the Outback and it continues with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, higher than many crossovers and some dedicated SUVs. The 2013 Outback 2.5i models debut a new double-overhead-cam (DOHC) 2.5-liter FB series Boxer engine for increased performance and fuel efficiency. The new engine produces 173 hp and 174 pounds-feet

of torque. The new engine produces greater low-end torque across a broad speed range, making the 2013 Outback 2.5i models feel more responsive in everyday driving. Outback 2.5i and 2.5i Premium models offer a choice between a standard six-speed manual transmission and the second-generation Lineartronic CVT, which is standard on 2.5i Limited models. Outback 3.6R models continue with a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder Boxer engine and five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Subaru says the 2013 Outback 2.5i with the Lineartronic CVT gets 24/30 mpg. The 2013 Outback models debut Subaru’s new EyeSight driver-assist system, which integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, PreCollision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. EyeSight uses a stereo camera design developed by Subaru to provide a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems. The EyeSight system processes stereo images to identify the vehicles traveling in front, as well as obstacles, traffic lanes and other items. Below speeds of 19 mph, EyeSight is capable of detecting pedestrians or objects in the vehicle’s path and can activate in order to mitigate or even avoid the collision.

Under certain circumstances, EyeSight is able to bring the car to a complete stop. At speeds above approximately 19 mph, EyeSight can apply the brakes when an object is detected, and will attempt to brake if the driver takes no evasive action, or does not brake appropriately, to help mitigate collision damage. The Lane Departure and Sway Warning feature can detect if the car begins to wander outside the intended lane without a turn signal being used, or if the car begins to sway within the travel lane. Intended for freeway use, EyeSight’s

Adaptive Cruise Control system can maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking and/or accelerating the car as needed to maintain the driver-selected target speed and traveling distance. So no doubt by this time of year Santa Claus is busy churning away on the production line at that icy toy factory, watching the elves punch the overtime clock and praying to heaven itself that Donner gets back from his Vegas junket in time to make the deliveries. But has anyone asked if Santa has his insurance needs covered? The accident/insurance lawyer in me can think of a few “must have” policies for the hectic holiday hero this season: 1) Property Damage (“PD”) – If Santa can’t quite stick the landing and damages your roof, car or other property, this product will insure for the repairs (usually at the fair market value of the property in its condition just before the loss); 2) Bodily Injury (“BI”) Liability – This insurance provides Santa with a legal defense and payment of claims made by anyone he negligently injures with his sleigh; 3) Personal Injury Protection (“PIP”) would cover Santa’s own medical expenses and lost work income regardless of who is at fault for the crash; 4) Underinsured Motorist (“UM”) -- It’s

The 2012 USPTA Grand Prix Masters Event hosted by Williams Island Tennis Club The Williams Island Tennis Club served as the official site for the USPTA’s Grand Prix Masters Event, the USPTA’s largest and most attended tournament of the year, on December 8th and 9th. Only the top forty USPTA players in the state of Florida were eligible to play. Miami Jewish Film Festival Turns Sweet Sixteen What better way to celebrate a Jewish occasion than to dance the hora? The 16th CAJE Miami Jewish Film Festival opens at the Colony Theater on Saturday, January 26th, with the film Hava Naglia (The Movie) that unlocks the history and mystery of the magical song played when dancing the hora. The music and the dance have become synonymous. Prior to opening night, on Tuesday, Jan. 22nd, festival organizers invite the community to the MAR – JCC in North Miami Beach, to “Miami’s Largest Hora Happening.” As a community people will celebrate the festival’s “Sweet Sixteen” and dance to the classic tune that has become an integral part of Jewish culture. The Jewish Film Festival runs from Jan. 26 - Feb 4th, and Ellen Wedner, Festival Director, has created a movie lineup with something to appeal to every age, from a toe-tapping documentary to a feature about finding common ground in a culturally diverse and racially charged community. A richly diverse cultural representation – Ethiopian, Israeli, Russian, Dutch, Cuban, German, and Argentinean – define the films scheduled for the Frank Theaters at Intracoastal Mall. Some of the films included in this unique melting pot are: 400 Miles to Freedom, a powerful documentary by co-director Avishai Mekonen, who breaks his 20-year silence about the brutal kidnapping he endured as a child in Sudan during his community's exodus out of Africa, and in so doing explores issues ofimmigration and racial diversity in Judaism today. Off White Lies is a charming Israeli film about a father, his daughter and a con game. Libby, an introverted yet sharp-witted teenager, is sent to live with her father, Shaul, in Israel. Her arrival coincides with the outbreak of the second Lebanon war. Libby quickly discovers that her Dad, is an infantile eccentric, and that he is “in-between apartments”. Shaul’s has a creative plan to put a roof over their heads. They pose as refugees from the bombarded Northern region of Israel, and are taken in by a well-off family in Jerusalem. Finally, in a "normal" household, Shaul and Libby begin to build their fatherdaughter relationship, but their false identities can't last forever. Special guest, filmmaker Yassel Inglesias, attends the screening of his documentary The Chosen Island. In the film, he explores both the history of Sephardim in Cuba and their indelible part of the country’s social fabric. Through interviews with members of the Cuban Sephardic Jewish community, viewers experience the rediscovery and revival of Jewish life there, and listen in as the film raises questions about faith, resilience, strength, and survival. As Ali struggles to fit in, he falls in with a group of young Arab troublemakers. In an attempt to impress his new friends, Ali is caught in an act of racial hatred. What happens next is a surprise to everyone, but no one more than Alexander and Ali. The song is instantly recognizable. Hava Nagila (The Movie) opens the festival and has an encore performance on Monday, Feb.4th at the Frank Theaters. The film is a joyful romp through the history, mystery and meaning of a ubiquitous party song that has its roots in the shtetls of Eastern Europe, and has found a cultural re-boot with performances by Harry Belefonte, Connie Francis, Glen Campbell, Elvis and even The Muppets. The festival closes with the coming of age film, Letters for Jenny (Cartas Para Jenny). Opening with a bittersweet Bat Mitzvah celebration, Jenny enters her teenage years after losing her mother to a terminal illness. Her father gives her a series of letters left behind by her late mother to be opened at key moments in her life. When confronted by an unexpected crisis, she turns to the letters for direction. The story follows Jenny from Argentina to Israel, where she reconnects with her Jewish identity and rediscovers her ability to love. The festival runs from Saturday, January 26 through February 4. This past November, over 500 Miami philanthropists gathered at Fontainebleau Miami Beach for the “I Have A Dream” Foundation of Miami Annual Gala hosted by Stephanie, Jules and Eddie Trump, owners of Acqualina Resort & Spa on the Beach.
