Time to take the test

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING There is a test that you should take every now and then to make sure you and your life are on the right track. There is nothing worse than having an “ah ha” moment when it is too late to change or fix something. “Ah ha” becomes “Oh no”. It is important to live your life with clarity and insight. Insight is the ability to understand hidden truths. It is the ability to perceive things in a sensitive manner. Insight can illuminate the past and it can prepare you for and propel you into the future. Anticipating the future is very important to make the most of the present. If you anticipate something then you can deal with the situation before it happens. You can preempt and intercept something. Anticipating allows you to prepare for what is coming. Here is the test. Write the answers to these questions; I am

I need I want I have I did I like ( about myself) what I am proud of in my life . I will (what I will do in the future.) Ask yourself, “What would I do if I knew I was dying almost immediately? What have I accomplished while I was here? What have I contributed? How have I made the world a better place by my presence? Did I make a difference? What will be my legacy? How will I be remembered? Did I take enough time to enjoy and appreciate the beauty and joys of life? Understandably, many people will not want to take this test. It is thought– provoking and perhaps anxiety–producing. It is certainly appropriate at the beginning of the New Year. But, it should not be limited to once a year. This test will give you clarity, truth, perception and perspective. It will give you the opportunity to see, understand and change things in your life and make them different or better. Hopefully, it will enlighten, empower and inspire you. Healthcare 2.0: Aventura Hospital and Medical Center merges medicine with technology In our personal and professional lives, technology has helped us connect across thousands of miles in an instant, and this is no different in the healthcare field. At the forefront of this constantly growing and changing relationship between medicine and technology is Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. “The technological industry has always pioneered new paths in healthcare, whether it’s platforms for faster communication or leading edge products that drastically shorten recovery time,” said Heather Rohan, CEO of Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. “We constantly try to find new ways to provide our patients with excellent care, and we are always vetting new ideas that blend science fiction with medical reality.” In addition to giving patients the access to email and surf the internet while recovering, Aventura Hospital boasts a host of leading edge equipment and programs: CPOE – Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) is one great advancement in technology that improves the quality of healthcare. CPOE is a data entry system that allows doctors to connect instantly with labs, pharmacies, and other health departments. The test results are processed faster and more accurately and a patient’s medical history is accessed quickly to crosscheck for dangerous interactions of medications. Radiofrequency Tracking – Important equipment through-

out the facility are outfitted with small radio frequency badge that receives information to track movement from one location to another. This tag allows the hospital to better allocate resources, quickly turnover clean rooms and provide more efficient and timely patient care. Elekta Synergy® S System – The Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center is the first and only facility in South Florida using the Elekta Synergy®S System in its radiation treatment arsenal. The system has integrated 3D imaging that enables clinicians to obtain cone beam CT images of patients just before treatment. This capability allows physicians to visualize tumors at the point of treatment, offering

more precise targeting of tumors with radiation beam. Super Dimension – The superDimension i·Logic™ System uses Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® (ENB)™ to reach lesions deep in the lungs in a minimally invasive process. Using this system enables our physicians to find and diagnose lesion in the lung earlier, leading to quicker treatment and better outcomes. Vitals Now – Vitals Now is an innovative, costeffective solution that provides real-time flow of vital signs from the bedside into the current patient monitoring system and record. The second-by-second update of vital signs increases communication on the coordination of care and greatly improves patient safety. Airstrip – Coming soon to Aventura Hospital, this revolutionary new technology will allow physicians to access patient vitals while the ambulance is in transit to the hospital, shaving crucial time off assessment and saving lives. The system monitors heart rhythms and sends the information in realtime to the ER where a physician can assess and diagnose the patient before they even leave the ambulance. As Aventura Hospital and Medical Center continues to strive for excellence in healthcare, technology will be a strong component of providing better patient experiences and outcomes. ‘Resolutions’

Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY “Happy New Year??” I suppose it could be if we decide to keep at least some proactive New Year’s resolutions for more than just the first few weeks of 2012… Coffee Resolution: Just when you resolve to stop being a regular at Starbucks - a study reveals coffee contributes more antioxidants to the diet linked to fighting heart disease and cancer than cranberries, apples or tomatoes. You might have thought about switching to decaf - up until another study showed decaf may cause an increase in harmful LDL cholesterol. If you really don’t care “a hill of beans” what the studies say, just resolve to get your Starbucks gold card so you can accumulate lots of points for free drinks! Debt Resolution: Just when you resolve to start leaving home without your “overswiped” credit card – you spend enough to earn the honor of having your limit raised.

Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again Everyone knows what credit card debt can cost in interest alone – but the chance to get a great post-holiday bargain? That’s priceless! Healthy Resolution: Whole Foods Market is sure to be even busier after the first of the year when everyone who made a resolution to eat healthier packs the aisles. But wait...Last time you were there, weren’t the aisles already so crowded you could barely navigate through the produce section to get a small bag of grapes priced as much as a fine bottle of wine?? Love Life Resolution: Just when you resolve to make more of an effort to meet Mr. or Ms. Right in 2012, what happens? You invest a significant sum to join one of those “It’s Just Brunch” dating services and quickly realize “Lose Your Lunch” would be a much more apropos name… The only saving grace could be the loss of appetite winds up helping you keep your “lose ten pounds” resolution. ‘Just Keep It!’ While you’re ringing in the New Year, if anyone asks, “What’s your resolution?” you could suggest the universal New Year’s resolution should simply be: “Resolving to keep the ones we make!”

Cleopatra and Beauty BY DR. JAIME ROSENZWEIG, M.D. MCleopatra may have been on to something. Aside from being tauted for her intelligence and beauty, she was also medically ahead of her time. She soaked in goat’s milk baths nightly to keep her skin glowing. Unbeknownst to her, she was actually giving herself a lactic acid treatment: a pre-modern day chemical peel. A chemical peel is a solution applied to the skin which causes rapid exfoliation and improves the overall appearance of the skin. Chemical peels help promote collagen, improve age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne. Like Cleopatra’s panacea, many of the chemical peels today contain acids that are originally found in foods and fruits. These acids help remove the dead cell layers on the skin surface, revealing fresh new skin lying beneath. Chemical peels are applied to the skin after it has been cleansed and degreased.

The application is fairly quick and there is minimal discomfort, but there may be a mild stinging or heat sensation. The skin may feel taught or appear slightly red the day following the application. The skin will begin peeling 2-3 days after the solution is applied. Typically, the skin will peel for 3 days. The whole process will usually be complete in 1 week. It is extremely important to protect your skin for at least 2 weeks following the peel with sunblock. Chemical peels have been used for centuries and have withstood the test of time. Chemical peels are a fantastic way to rejuvenate the skin with little downtime yielding refreshed, renewed, and glowing results that you can see! (*There are many sites that will sell chemical peels to you over the internet. It is not recommended to perform chemical peels on yourself, because there can be serious, adverse reactions. It is advisable to see an experience health care provider). Dr. Rosenzweig can be reached at: 1707 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd., Hallandale Beach, Fl 33009. (954)4584533

Peace On Earth; Good Will Toward Men!

Rev. Wil Keyser RELIGION During this time of year we constantly hear all of the ‘cliches’ about Christmas. Merry Christmas; I’m dreaming of a white Christmas; Happy holidays, and on and on. Yet there is one phrase that is repeated constantly in error, ‘Peace on earth; Good will toward men!’ That is only part of the expression used by the great company of the heavenly hosts, the angels, to the shepherds out in the fields on the night of Jesus’ birth. That is usually what happens when something very special is over-used. It becomes common place and shortened to make it more convenient for easy conversation. The original statement from the angels read like this: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests.” That is a far cry from ‘peace on earth good will to men.’ What has happened to down-grade what the angels said? Their first and foremost emphasis was to praise God for what He had just done for mankind. The One who is the Savior of men was born moments before the announcement to the shepherds. That part of the expression is blatantly missing from today’s greetings. The second part of their emphasis was based on the fact that peace in the hearts of men was now available. But that peace came with a restiction. Notice it says: ‘Peace to men on whom God’s favor rests.’ Those who have not made peace with God will find that there is no peace for them because his favor does not rest upon them. The Scriptures give us at least four accounts of people, men and a woman in particular, on whom God’s favor rested. It is recorded that Noah walked in the ways of God, a righteous man, and he found

favor in the eyes of God. (Genesis 6:8) Gideon was the military hero and spiritual leader who delivered Israel from the oppression of the Midianites. At one point he asked the Lord: ‘If I have found favor in your eyes give me a sign that it is really You speaking to me?’ In response the Lord said to him: ‘Peace! Do not be afraid.’ God’s peace was upon Gideon because he trusted completely in God. (Judges 6:17,23) Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God: You, Lord, have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with Me. My presence will go with you and I will give you peace.” (Exodus 32:11, 33:12) Mary, the mother of Jesus, was visited by an angel before she was married to Joseph. The angel said to her: ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.’ She was troubled by his words but the angel told her: ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son , and you are to give him the name Jesus.’ Mary responded:’ I am the Lord’s servant, may it be to me as you have said.’ (Luke 1:28-38) We can conclude from those records that God’s peace rests upon those who truly trust Him, walk in His ways, have a relationship with God so that He knows you by name, and be willing to carry out God’s plan even when it means completely changing our plans. Rather than use the ‘cliche’ as so many do, make it your purpose to give glory to God in the highest for sending to earth the only One who could bring peace to us and be certain that you, individually, have found favor in the eyes of the Lord so that His peace can rest upon you. My wife, Claudia, and I trust that this will be a Christmas when you realize the peace of God upon you because you have found favor in His eyes. Rev. Keyser is the Pastoral Director of The Quiet Place 305 931 4823 During this time of year we constantly hear all of the ‘cliches’

Pet Tips Brought to You by Pet Supermarket

Holiday Dangers for Your Dog The holiday season is a time for visiting family, enjoying special meals and giving gifts to human and canine friends. But holiday food and décor can also pose extra dangers for your dog. Avoid a trip to the veterinarian by following these tips. Holiday dangers: • Holiday food can be harmful to dogs. Don't overindulge Fido with turkey skin, ham fat or other fatty foods, which could lead to stomach upset and pancreatitis.Turkey bones can puncture intestines and should be avoided as well. • Reduce temptation for your dog. Avoid leaving food on an unsupervised table and keep a secure lid on the garbage can full of scraps. • Some holiday plants cause toxicity or upset stomachs. Keep Poinsettias, holly, mistletoe and hibiscus out of reach • Got a box of chocolates? Keep them away from your dog. Dark chocolate is especially harmful. • Sugarless candy with Xylitol is also very toxic for

dogs and can cause liver failure. • Don't leave gifts that might include candy under the tree or on a bed. • Never give your dog beverages with alcohol, which could cause respiratory and cardiac distress. • Keep lit menorahs and holiday candles out of reach. • Water in a Christmas tree stand can have harmful preservatives, pine needles and bacteria. • Holiday decorations, including ornaments, tinsel, garland, lights and other small items can pose choking or electrical hazards. A houseful of visitors, loud noises and extra food can all cause a stressful situation for your doggie. Give him quiet space if he needs it and follow these tips for a safe and enjoyable holiday. Just don't forget to tell grandpa to ignore the begging doggy eyes under the table. This holiday give your dog healthy treats and interactive toys from Pet Supermarket.

Keeping Your Cat off the Christmas Tree It can be quite a challenge to keep a Christmas tree upright when you have a cat swatting at ornaments or jumping on branches. But it's possible to keep your tree free of "clinging cat" ornaments. Use these tips for a cat-friendly holiday tree. • First, get a cat repellent spray like Keep Off. Using it around the tree will keep your cat from getting too close. Make sure the spray is for indoor use. • Consider getting an artificial tree. Real Christmas trees can bring hazards into your home, including toxic sap, sharp pine needles and harmful preservatives in the tree water. • If you get a real tree, put it up and leave undecorated for a couple of days. This will give kitty a chance to get used to the tree and accept it. • Secure the tree so it doesn't tip over. Anchor the top to the ceiling with fishing line.

• Lighting and other string-like objects are attractive to cats. Consider leaving them off. Otherwise, use sparingly and twist the cords around branches tightly. • Garland, tinsel or icicles can cause choking and intestinal blockage if swallowed by a kitty. • Artificial snow is toxic to your cat. • Avoid hanging breakable ornaments on lower branches. Plastic ornaments or homemade decorations are safer there. • Careful with ribbons on gifts placed under the tree. They're attractive to your kitty and can be harmful if ingested. To distract your cat from the tempting tree, give her an early Christmas gift. A new catnip toy, interactive toy or scratching post is sure to keep her busy. Look for all the cat distractions you'll need at your nearest Pet Supermarket.

Dodge Charger SRT8 balances power and performance Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The Dodge Charger SRT8 was a hot seller last year for the resurgent automaker, so it is no surprise that it returns to the performance car market in 2012, but with several improvements for even better performance and more power for the popular four-door fastback coupe. New for 2012 is a 470 hp 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 with 45 more horses and 50 more pounds-feet torque across a wider rpm range. There’s also new exhaust system technology for improved fuel efficiency, new paddle shifters on the steering wheel and adaptive damping suspension for better handling and driver control. The new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 clocks 0-60 mph in the high four-second range; notches a quarter mile in just under 13 seconds; 0100 mph in less than 16 seconds, and tops out at 175 mph. And, oh yeah, it will brake to a stop from 60 mph in a remarkable 120 feet. Even with the extra power, Dodge engineers have been able to coax an extra 21 per-

cent in fuel economy (up to 23 mpg) on the highway with the addition of a new active valve exhaust system that allows the standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) to engage over a wider rpm range for improved efficiency or the use of all eight cylinders when the extra power is needed. The new active valve exhaust system also allows for straight through mid and rear mufflers for a really cool throaty exhaust note. The 2012 Charger SRT8 has an active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing to provide maximum low-end torque, including an additional 80 pounds-feet of torque at 2,900 rpm for jack rabbit standing starts, while optimizing high-end power. The five-speed automatic transmission may be operated manually by new steering wheelmounted paddle shifters that join the center console mounted Auto Stick. Both provide the ability to manually select specific gears. A standard adaptive damping suspension (ADS) system is new for 2012 and tuned specifically for the Charger SRT8. The ADS system uses a wide range of on-road and driver inputs, such as vehicle speed, steering angle, steering speed, brake torque, throttle position and lateral acceleration to automatically tune the suspension for specific conditions. When drivers manually choose

between the “Auto” and “Sport” settings, the shock damping characteristics are quickly changed from an everyday performance ride to a much firmer racetrack capable damping for more challenging driving situations. As for looks, there is no mistaking the high performance Charger SRT8 with its highgloss black front grille, grille surround, Dodge crosshair, signature SRT badge and the HEMI badges on each fender. A new per-

formance-sculpted hood has a black air exhauster for added engine cooling. Base price on the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 is $46,660. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Pembroke among Nation’s ‘Top Performers on Key Quality Measures’

Two Memorial Healthcare System hospitals – Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Pembroke – have earned national recognition as Top Performers on Key Quality Measures from The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in the United States. “To be ranked among the nation’s top performers is an honor that reflects Memorial’s dedication to delivering outstanding medical care in a patient- and family-centered environment,” says Frank V. Sacco, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Healthcare System. “We are extremely proud of this accomplishment.” This is the first year for the program, and the 2011 list is based on 2010 accountability measure data reported about evidencebased clinical processes that are shown to be the best treatments for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma. The 405 hospitals on the list represent the top 14 percent of the more than 3,000 Joint Commission-accredited hospitals that reported data. To be recognized, an organi-

zation must meet two 95 percent performance thresholds. First, they must achieve a composite performance of 95 percent or above in the results of all the accountability measures for which they report data. Second, they must meet or exceed a 95 percent performance target for every accountability measure for which they report data. Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Pembroke were acknowledged for achieving 95 percent performance thresholds in four adult measures: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. “Today, the public expects transparency in the reporting of performance at the hospitals where they receive care, and The Joint Commission is shining a light on the top-performing hospitals such as Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Pembroke that have achieved excellence on a number of vital measures of quality of care,” says Mark R. Chassin, MD, FACP, MPP, MPH, President, The Joint Commission.

Sell your condo at auction? It just may be your best option

RayPrinciotta

Each method produces results that compare with, and in many cases, exceed traditional brokerage methods. The properties are sold AS-IS with no contingencies, and can include all furnishings if desired. With an Auction, you set the date your property will sell. An Auction generates excitement by sending a clear message that you, the seller, are serious and highly motivated. Remember, motivated doesn’t mean desperate. It means that you want to sell and move on to the next chapter. We all know the feeling of relief when your property goes into contract ‌ and the pressure and anxiety when your home lingers on the market. Every passing month you are carrying the property, and if you have already bought a new home, you are carrying two..Ouch! Auctions bring Buyers to the point of decision quickly. In preparation for the Auction, the Bidders must bring a Cashier’s Check in order to bid; and the winning Bidder must make a deposit of 10% of the contract price at the signing of the contract. This significant earnest money deposit means the property is far more likely to close. Another major difference between an

ON REAL ESTATE Once a popular selling method in California, non-distressed Residential Auctions are showing up here in Florida. The recent Auction Sale of two Golden Beach mansions sold in tandem set the local real estate market talking. The sellers decided to auction their properties at an Absolute Auction, which means the properties would be sold to the highest bidder regardless of price. The two properties sold for $12.4 million...the sale was fast, fair and satisfying to all concerned. If you are interested in selling your real estate at auction, you will need to work with an auctioneer who is a licensed Florida real estate broker. Based on your situation, there are various types of Auctions, the most popular are Absolute, Reserve, and Minimum Bid. Also, there are both Live and Online Auctions as well a hybrid Live and Remote, which is used to facilitate bidders from around the world.

auction and a traditional brokerage sale is there is no inspection period after the “Purchase and Sale agreement is signed by the Buyer and Seller. Prospective Bidders conduct their due diligence inspections before the auction. So the day of the auction, everybody is set and ready to deal. Live “On-Site Auctions create spirited bidding, producing higher sale prices. The Auction will quickly bring the true market price. (The True Market price is the price a buyer is willing to pay for the property on that day.) As you can see, there are pro’s and con’s to selling your home at Auction. Built in to the Auction experience is the Buyer’s expectation that they will get something at a low price. This may or may not happen. Promoting and advertising the Auction through Target Marketing increases the visibility of the property. A larger audience sees the property and more potential bidders attend the Auction, on-site or on-line. For the Seller, the speed of the Auction is a major advantage. The home will sell

very quickly and the sale will be completed more rapidly than selling through the traditional methods. The waiting and worrying come to a quick conclusion. If you want to or need to sell in a set period of time, an auction may be your best option. Ray Princiotta is a licensed Florida real estate broker. Dr. Frederick Knoll: Training dentists to ‘make the world smile’ BY BARI AUERBACH When Dr. Frederick Knoll isn’t at his North Miami Beach dental practice helping patients of all ages attain more beautiful, healthy smiles, he devotes a great deal of time to training the next generation of dentists enrolled in a Hialeahbased University of Florida post graduate program for which he serves as Director of Fixed Prosthodontics. “Most people associate UF with Gators and Gainesville – but the UF College of Dentistry’s Hialeah Dental Clinic actually opened in 1997 offering an Advanced Education in General Dentistry program for mostly internationally educated dentists,” Dr. Knoll explains. Averaging 200 patients per week, the Hialeah Dental Clinic offers comprehensive oral care to children, adults and senior citizens. Dental residents enrolled in the UF program are actively engaged in all phases of dentistry including “prosthodontics” – one of Dr. Knoll’s specialties. A prosthodontist is a dental specialist skilled in the replacement of missing teeth and restoration of natural teeth; and trained to

deal with restorations of the whole mouth, as well as treating facial deformities. “During dental school, my experience as a lab technician gave me a unique understanding and skill for restorative dentistry,” said Dr. Knoll – renowned for being trusted by patients and respected by doctors. “Today, I find it extremely rewarding to pass this advanced training on to ‘the future’s best dentists.’” Striking before and after photos displayed in his North Miami Beach office and the fact that thousands of “Knoll smiles” include patients and many other dentists who travel all the way from other states and countries for comprehensive care highlight Dr. Knoll’s ongoing proactive mission to “make the world smile!” Dr. Frederick Knoll’s North Miami Beach office is located at 951 Northeast 167th Street. Chai Lifeline brings smiles one slice at a time For the children of Chai Lifeline Southeast, pizza and entertainers were a perfect early Chanukah combination. The Sunday, December 11 party was organized by Chai Lifeline Southeast and volunteers from K-Space. Accompanied by their new volunteer BFFs, children were entranced by the antics of ventriloquist, Avy Sherman. They listened intently to stories retold by Ahuva Epstein before enjoying pizza, soda and yummy refreshments. For many children, the highlight of the afternoon was a visit to the “Toy Store,” where each chose a gift to take home for Chanukah. Parents appreciated the time to relax and network with new and old friends. “My child had the most fabulous time,” said one enthusiastic mother. “Any escape

from his daily routine of doctors and hospitals is such a huge gift.”

‘Quotes of the year’ COMPILED BY BARI AUERBACH As we all look forward to 2012, it’s time to take a look back at some of 2011’s most memorable quotes from Aventura Marketing Council meetings featuring business and community leaders as well as special guest speakers who were fascinating, motivating and inspirational. “I’m fully committed to getting county government back on track…Restoring trust in Miami-Dade government can’t be done simply by words – we’re going to do it by deeds proving ‘they do what they say they’re going to do.’” Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez hosted by City of Sunny Isles Beach. “AT&T has launched a program with Junior Achievement called ‘Aspire’ offering job-shadowing events for students who can still be convinced to stay in school and finish with at least a high school degree. It was once said, ‘Young people are only 25 percent of the population but they’re 100 percent of your future.’” Marshall M. Criser, III, President, AT&T Florida “You have a right to trial by jury, to confront your accusers in open court and to see the evidence against you. In this country, our courts are the great leveler where all men are created equal.” Marcia Cooke, U.S. District Court Judge at North Dade Justice Center’s Law Day event. “‘Kudos’ to Aventura’s forward-thinking City Manager and City Commission for having the vision to create the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center as a catalyst for growth.” Sonia Green, Broward Center Vice President. “You’ve taken a dream from words to actions with this wonderful Anchors Away Foundation...In the process of participating, we glorify and honor the defenseless and invisible in our communities… Because of programs like this, literally and figuratively. they get to be ‘in the sun’” Alberto Carvalho, M-DCPS Superintendent at 5th Anchors Away launch. “As leaders, it starts with you – so don’t lead a debriefing with ‘we.’ It begins

with ‘I’ – I made this mistake during an execution and I can get better.” Author Matthew ‘Whiz’ Buckley hosted by Nutriway. “When you hire a Guard and Reserve person, you’re getting somebody who has been tested under stressful conditions; shows initiative; is dependable and disciplined; has an innate sense of responsibility; will be drug-free, physically fit and willing to work.” James G. Rebholz, National Committee for Department and Defense, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve hosted by Memorial Regional Hospital South and Warren Henry Auto Group. “International business - we only see it growing and South Florida is a fine example of that…Today, the trend is all about ‘going global.’” Ian McCluskey, CEO Thought Leadership International hosted by The McKafka Group.. “A lot of good partnerships and effective strategies have brought violent crime down and our public corruption unit is one of the most aggressive in the state…We want to stand proud and be a wonderful beacon for the rest of the world to see called: Miami-Dade County.” Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle hosted by Bnai Zion Foundation and Holistic Health Care Miami. “Ten years ago we were attacked and some of our buildings may have crumbled – but our foundation, our very core as Americans will continue to survive.” Aventura Mayor Susan Gottlieb at 9/11 Remembrance.

Herb and Gloria Barker, owners of Barker Animation Art Gallery, live with a passionate confidence in the importance of the art of animation and its enduring quality, and would heartily disagree. They have witnessed a growing appreciation for animated films and TV shows lately, which has spurred the animation art market to ever higher levels, creating a demand not only for the original production art, but for related artwork in the form of limited edition series and

fine art giclées. These allow a family to bring home the same wonderful characters who brought them joy in the movies, but at a very affordable price. Disney artist Tim Rogerson feels that the challenge of his art as giclées is to tell an entire story in one image, to express the particular magic that the audience wants to take home with them. Just as Mickey Mouse and Popeye served to raise the spirits of the American people back in 1930 at the start of the Depression, today’s cartoons provide an activity that the entire family can share at little expense. And now, thanks to the internet, any collector has access to the names and artwork of the great young stars of the future. It has created exciting opportunities for galleries who are willing to invest in the medium. A reputable art gallery that stands behind its work can run a very successful virtual gallery, building up a loyal clientele from all over the world. The Barkers have brought this beautiful, life -affirming art to over three generations of collectors through their art galleries in Hallandale Beach and Cheshire, Connecticut and in their Cartoon Museum in Cheshire. They have no doubt that just as the art of animation will always evolve, astound and entertain, it will never die. For more information, contact Barker Animation Art Gallery at 954.457.2280

At least EU politicians are trying to resolve their dilemma R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY The European Union doesn’t have a central government with authority over its sovereign nations. The union is made up of 27 independent countries that all have the right to create their own budgets, run their own deficits if they so wish, and to finance the cost of running their own countries through the sale of government bonds. So, the European Union is responsible for the overall financial stability of the group of nations as a whole, but has no authority to control the monetary affairs of the individual nations. Quite a dilemma! The United States, by contrast, is one sovereign nation that has one central government with full control over its spending, taxation and decision-making authority. While both Europe and the United States have major financial crises at hand, we in America are in a far better position to control and resolve our financial dilemma. To further complicate Europe’s situation,

the independent nations have totally different outlooks on how each nation should handle its financial affairs. The northern European nations, such as Germany, have a very strict, self-disciplined outlook — live seriously, stay within a national budget and spend only what they have in the bank, so to speak. In the south, Italians and Greeks, for example, tend to live a more relaxed life and look to government to take care of the problems. With all these problems the European Union is responsible for the welfare of Europe, yet cannot interfere in the affairs of the individual governments. It finds itself having to resolve the dilemma with the financial strength of one nation bailing out another. Heads of state, from Germany, France, Greece, Spain and the balance of the European Common Market, all with different opinions on a potential resolution, have been meeting constantly, developing one plan after another in anticipation of bringing the crisis to a resolution. The various nations’ approaches to a resolution are far more diverse than the differences between Democrats and Republicans in this country. However, acknowledging their different political ideologies, the

European countries have put their differences aside and are attacking the problem in a united manner. Contrast this, if you will, with the politicians running the U.S. where the survival and future prosperity of a political party is deemed far more important than the future of our nation and the survival of the men and women that have elected them to office to protect our nation. A select group of 12 Senate and House members representing both Democrats and Republicans were assigned the task of creating a blueprint of a plan to reduce the national budget by $1.2 trillion. They were given a timeframe to come to a resolution. If they did not create an acceptable plan, an automatic reduction in spending would go into effect with a formula that is arbitrary in nature and does not give consideration to the needs of individual groups and the general condition of the nation. Yet this select group of elected officials, representing both sides of the political spectrum, could agree only on the fact that they could not come to an agreement. The hell with the needs of our country — our two political parties couldn’t put their own partisan interests aside and focus on our nation’s future.

Be happy. TV & Internet

VIEWPOINT Our Senate and House members, both elected men and women, wonder why the voters of our nation hold them in such low esteem. Just listen to the Republican debates over who should oppose the president in the coming election. Do we hear any clear, detailed proposals on how to get America back to work or do we only hear “we must do everything to get Obama out of the White House.” I would really like to hear how they plan on creating jobs, lower the deficit and returning prosperity to America. Perhaps the voters might elect one of them if they had a decent workable plan. We appreciate your opinions on this column whether in agreement or disagreement. Members of the South Florida community are invited to join the fight against hunger and attend Feeding South Florida’s (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank) “Come Together” evening event on Jan. 12, 2012. 7-10 p.m., at The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, 591 NW 27 St. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Feeding South Florida is hosting the soiree that will feature food, spirits, incredible artwork, live entertainment, some of South Florida’s top chefs, and more. Proceeds/sponsorships will benefit Feeding South Florida, a notfor-profit organization that feeds South Florida’s hungry in order to improve their lives. Individuals and corporations are Feeding South Florida’s main sources of financial support. For every dollar donated, seven lifesaving pounds of food and grocery items are provided. Event sponsorships are available ranging from $25,000 (175,000 pounds sponsor) to $1,000 (7,000 pounds sponsor). Additional packages and sponsorship opportunities may be tailored to specific individual, corporate and community objectives. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Any and all donations are welcomed and needed. Attendees should dress for the “Come Together” event however they feel comfortable — from jeans to tuxedos. “Come Together” event chairs are Maria R. Millares, president of the board of directors for Feeding South Florida; Chef Allen Susser, one of South Florida’s top chefs, and Terry Zarikian of China Grill Management and New York’s City Harvest.

Current event sponsors are JM Family and Millares & Company; in-kind sponsors are The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, VSBrooks Advertising, Panache Party Rentals, Le Basque, Bacardi, Southern Wine & Spirits and Shutter Box Photo Booth. Also participating in “Come Together” are some of the South Florida’s top restaurants including China Grill, Asia de Cuba, Egg & Dart, City Hall, Mercadito, Ortanique on the Mile, Chef Allen, D Rodriguez Cuba on Ocean, Scarpetta, The Forge, La Palme D’Or Restaurant at the Biltmore, Makoto, 1500° at Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach and Whisk Gourmet Food & Catering. Feeding South Florida’s mission is to feed South Florida’s hungry in order to improve their lives. It does this by distributing food and groceries through its network of not-for-profit organizations, educating the public about the issue, and engaging our community in the fight to end hunger. In South Florida alone, 936,000 individuals are food insecure; 36 percent of those served are children. Feeding South Florida provides approximately 29 million pounds of food annually to over 700 agencies throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties. Recently, Feeding South Florida’s agencies are reporting a 39 percent increase in the demand for food services, due to the current economic climate. Individual tickets are $125 per person. UM Entrepreneurship Center attends White House meeting BY CATHARINE SKIPP

In an early December gathering at the White House, the Startup America Partnership convened its all-entrepreneur board and announced $475 million in new committed resources to help startups scale, pushing the total value of its partner offerings to over $1.2 billion. The latest round of partner commitments are a direct response to specific requests made by the nearly 2,000 Startup America firms that already have registered with the Partnership since the release of its platform in September. Dr. Susan Amat, executive director of The Launch Pad at the University of Miami, represented Startup Florida as a regional co-leader. “Presenting to the administration and the Startup America Board and corporate partners about the activities and opportunities to support entrepreneurs in Florida was an incredible experience,” Amat said. “In taking a leadership role in the state, the reach and resources of The Launch Pad Network will expand to better meet the needs of our students and alumni, and by extension the Florida business community as a whole.” The Launch Pad, a novel entrepreneurship initiative developed at the University of Miami, helps both students and alumni create new enterprises, with a particular focus on the university’s home in South Florida. These aims are achieved by treating entrepreneurship as a mainstream career, a legitimate way to make a living, and by linking young entrepreneurs to regional commercial and community networks. Board members, sponsors, regional leaders and entrepreneurs met to discuss how to best utilize these resources and the Partnership’s platform to help startups grow in order to create jobs throughout the country. Joining the board at the White House were representatives from regional

initiatives, including Startup Florida, Startup Connecticut, Startup Illinois, Startup Massachusetts and Startup Tennessee. “The Startup America Partnership is focused on helping young companies grow because with their success come job creation and a stronger American economy,” said Steve Case, chair of the Startup America Partnership. “Our board members are perfect examples of founders who have succeeded in turning their visions into successful, high-growth ventures that employ hundreds of thousands of people.” According to the Kauffman Foundation, companies less than 5 years old accounted for all of the net job growth in our country between 1980 and 2005. Young firms’ success is often dependent on access to a variety of resources that help them grow. New corporate commitments to the Startup America Partnership support the growth of startups in five key areas: expertise, services, talent, customers and capital. “With our latest round of partners, we’ve continued to build out the offerings that startups have identified as being crucial to their growth,” said Scott Case, CEO of the Startup America Partnership. “Every startup in the country should register now to utilize these resources and jumpstart their growth.” Each Startup America Firm has access to a personalized dashboard — their “Growth Kit” — with which they can connect to resources and find the most relevant offerings based on their specific needs, stage of growth, and location. They also have access to an exclusive online community of other founders and startup team members where they can interact with Partnership representatives, share best practices and support their fellow entrepreneurs. For more information on the Partnership, visit online at <www.startupamericapartnership.org>.
