Time to take the test
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING There is a test that you should take every now and then to make sure you and your life are on the right track. There is nothing worse than having an “ah ha” moment when it is too late to change or fix something. “Ah ha” becomes “Oh no”. It is important to live your life with clarity and insight. Insight is the ability to understand hidden truths. It is the ability to perceive things in a sensitive manner. Insight can illuminate the past and it can prepare you for and propel you into the future. Anticipating the future is very important to make the most of the present. If you anticipate something then you can deal with the situation before it happens. You can preempt and intercept something. Anticipating allows you to prepare for what is coming. Here is the test. Write the answers to these questions; I am

What have I accomplished while I was here? What have I contributed? How have I made the world a better place by my presence? Did I make a difference? What will be my legacy? How will I be remembered? Did I take enough time to enjoy and appreciate the beauty and joys of life? Understandably, many people will not want to take this test. It is thought– provoking and perhaps anxiety–producing. It is certainly appropriate at the beginning of the New Year. But, it should not be limited to once a year. This test will give you clarity, truth, perception and perspective. It will give you the opportunity to see, understand and change things in your life and make them different or better. Hopefully, it will enlighten, empower and inspire you. Cleopatra and Beauty BY DR. JAIME ROSENZWEIG, M.D. MCleopatra may have been on to something. Aside from being tauted for her intelligence and beauty, she was also medically ahead of her time. She soaked in goat’s milk baths nightly to keep her skin glowing. Unbeknownst to her, she was actually giving herself a lactic acid treatment: a pre-modern day chemical peel. A chemical peel is a solution applied to the skin which causes rapid exfoliation and improves the overall appearance of the skin. Chemical peels help promote collagen, improve age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne. Like Cleopatra’s panacea, many of the chemical peels today contain acids that are originally found in foods and fruits. Peace On Earth; Good Will Toward Men!
Rev. Wil Keyser RELIGION During this time of year we constantly hear all of the ‘cliches’ about Christmas. Merry Christmas; I’m dreaming of a white Christmas; Happy holidays, and on and on. Yet there is one phrase that is repeated constantly in error, ‘Peace on earth; Good will toward men!’ That is only part of the expression used by the great company of the heavenly hosts, the angels, to the shepherds out in the fields on the night of Jesus’ birth. That is usually what happens when something very special is over-used. It becomes common place and shortened to make it more convenient for easy conversation. The original statement from the angels read like this: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests.” That is a far cry from ‘peace on earth good will to men.’ What has happened to down-grade what the angels said? Their first and foremost emphasis was to praise God for what He had just done for mankind. The One who is the Savior of men was born moments before the announcement to the shepherds. That part of the expression is blatantly missing from today’s greetings. The second part of their emphasis was based on the fact that peace in the hearts of men was now available. But that peace came with a restiction. Notice it says: ‘Peace to men on whom God’s favor rests.’ Those who have not made peace with God will find that there is no peace for them because his favor does not rest upon them. The Scriptures give us at least four accounts of people, men and a woman in particular, on whom God’s favor rested. It is recorded that Noah walked in the ways of God, a righteous man, and he found
favor in the eyes of God. (Genesis 6:8) Gideon was the military hero and spiritual leader who delivered Israel from the oppression of the Midianites. At one point he asked the Lord: ‘If I have found favor in your eyes give me a sign that it is really You speaking to me?’ In response the Lord said to him: ‘Peace! Do not be afraid.’ God’s peace was upon Gideon because he trusted completely in God. (Judges 6:17,23) Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God: You, Lord, have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with Me. My presence will go with you and I will give you peace.” (Exodus 32:11, 33:12) Mary, the mother of Jesus, was visited by an angel before she was married to Joseph. The angel said to her: ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.’ She was troubled by his words but the angel told her: ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son , and you are to give him the name Jesus.’ Mary responded:’ I am the Lord’s servant, may it be to me as you have said.’ (Luke 1:28-38) We can conclude from those records that God’s peace rests upon those who truly trust Him, walk in His ways, have a relationship with God so that He knows you by name, and be willing to carry out God’s plan even when it means completely changing our plans. Rather than use the ‘cliche’ as so many do, make it your purpose to give glory to God in the highest for sending to earth the only One who could bring peace to us and be certain that you, individually, have found favor in the eyes of the Lord so that His peace can rest upon you. My wife, Claudia, and I trust that this will be a Christmas when you realize the peace of God upon you because you have found favor in His eyes. Rev. He was also the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the Veterans Administration Lakeside Hospital in Chicago. With broad repertoire of catheter-based therapies, Dr. Beohar has extensive expertise in implanting catheter-delivered heart aortic valves and is an expert in treating complex coronary conditions, such as left main and multivessel disease, as well as chronic total occlusions. Dodge Charger SRT8 balances power and performance Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS The Dodge Charger SRT8 was a hot seller last year for the resurgent automaker, so it is no surprise that it returns to the performance car market in 2012, but with several improvements for even better performance and more power for the popular four-door fastback coupe. New for 2012 is a 470 hp 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 with 45 more horses and 50 more pounds-feet torque across a wider rpm range. There’s also new exhaust system technology for improved fuel efficiency, new paddle shifters on the steering wheel and adaptive damping suspension for better handling and driver control. The new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 clocks 0-60 mph in the high four-second range; notches a quarter mile in just under 13 seconds; 0100 mph in less than 16 seconds, and tops out at 175 mph. And, oh yeah, it will brake to a stop from 60 mph in a remarkable 120 feet. Even with the extra power, Dodge engineers have been able to coax an extra 21 per-
cent in fuel economy (up to 23 mpg) on the highway with the addition of a new active valve exhaust system that allows the standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) to engage over a wider rpm range for improved efficiency or the use of all eight cylinders when the extra power is needed. The new active valve exhaust system also allows for straight through mid and rear mufflers for a really cool throaty exhaust note. The 2012 Charger SRT8 has an active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing to provide maximum low-end torque, including an additional 80 pounds-feet of torque at 2,900 rpm for jack rabbit standing starts, while optimizing high-end power. The five-speed automatic transmission may be operated manually by new steering wheelmounted paddle shifters that join the center console mounted Auto Stick. Both provide the ability to manually select specific gears. A standard adaptive damping suspension (ADS) system is new for 2012 and tuned specifically for the Charger SRT8. The ADS system uses a wide range of on-road and driver inputs, such as vehicle speed, steering angle, steering speed, brake torque, throttle position and lateral acceleration to automatically tune the suspension for specific conditions. between the “Auto” and “Sport” settings, the shock damping characteristics are quickly changed from an everyday performance ride to a much firmer racetrack capable damping for more challenging driving situations. As for looks, there is no mistaking the high performance Charger SRT8 with its highgloss black front grille, grille surround, Dodge crosshair, signature SRT badge and the HEMI badges on each fender. The band has toured Russia twice, making historic appearances in Moscow (1992) and St. Petersburg (1995). The group has performed with such
renowned guest artists as Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, B.J. Thomas, The Lettermen, Gary Morris, Lari White, Mila Mason, Crystal Gayle, Jonathan Pierce, Christ Church Choir, Faith Hill and Restless Heart. The band has performed under the direction of prominent band composers and conductors such as Dr. Alfred Reed, Paul Bierley, and Robert W. Smith. The concert band also was presented with the prestigious Colonel George S. Howard Award from the Sousa Foundation for outstanding military concert bands in 1994 and 1996. The concert band is very active in recording projects. Since 1996, they have recorded a very special Christmas radio broadcast that was aired worldwide on the Armed Services Network and other AM and FM stations throughout the United States. In 1998, they recorded a definitive Henry Fillmore recording with the guidance of one of Fillmore’s musical peers, William Miller. In 2001, the band dedicated its latest recording, American Hero, to Brigadier General Robert L. Scott (ret.). The members of the band are professional Air Force musicians working in support of Air Force and Air Force Reserve recruiting and community relations objectives.

At least EU politicians are trying to resolve their dilemma R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY The European Union doesn’t have a central government with authority over its sovereign nations. The union is made up of 27 independent countries that all have the right to create their own budgets, run their own deficits if they so wish, and to finance the cost of running their own countries through the sale of government bonds. So, the European Union is responsible for the overall financial stability of the group of nations as a whole, but has no authority to control the monetary affairs of the individual nations. Quite a dilemma! The United States, by contrast, is one sovereign nation that has one central government with full control over its spending, taxation and decision-making authority. While both Europe and the United States have major financial crises at hand, we in America are in a far better position to control and resolve our financial dilemma. To further complicate Europe’s situation,
the independent nations have totally different outlooks on how each nation should handle its financial affairs. The northern European nations, such as Germany, have a very strict, self-disciplined outlook — live seriously, stay within a national budget and spend only what they have in the bank, so to speak. In the south, Italians and Greeks, for example, tend to live a more relaxed life and look to government to take care of the problems. With all these problems the European Union is responsible for the welfare of Europe, yet cannot interfere in the affairs of the individual governments. It finds itself having to resolve the dilemma with the financial strength of one nation bailing out another. Heads of state, from Germany, France, Greece, Spain and the balance of the European Common Market, all with different opinions on a potential resolution, have been meeting constantly, developing one plan after another in anticipation of bringing the crisis to a resolution. The various nations’ approaches to a resolution are far more diverse than the differences between Democrats and Republicans in this country. However, acknowledging their different political ideologies, the
European countries have put their differences aside and are attacking the problem in a united manner. Contrast this, if you will, with the politicians running the U.S. where the survival and future prosperity of a political party is deemed far more important than the future of our nation and the survival of the men and women that have elected them to office to protect our nation. A select group of 12 Senate and House members representing both Democrats and Republicans were assigned the task of creating a blueprint of a plan to reduce the national budget by $1.2 trillion. They were given a timeframe to come to a resolution. If they did not create an acceptable plan, an automatic reduction in spending would go into effect with a formula that is arbitrary in nature and does not give consideration to the needs of individual groups and the general condition of the nation. Yet this select group of elected officials, representing both sides of the political spectrum, could agree only on the fact that they could not come to an agreement. The hell with the needs of our country — our two political parties couldn’t put their own partisan interests aside and focus on our nation’s future.

Just listen to the Republican debates over who should oppose the president in the coming election. Do we hear any clear, detailed proposals on how to get America back to work or do we only hear “we must do everything to get Obama out of the White House.” I would really like to hear how they plan on creating jobs, lower the deficit and returning prosperity to America. Members of the South Florida community are invited to join the fight against hunger and attend Feeding South Florida’s (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank) “Come Together” evening event on Jan. 12, 2012. 7-10 p.m., at The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, 591 NW 27 St. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Feeding South Florida is hosting the soiree that will feature food, spirits, incredible artwork, live entertainment, some of South Florida’s top chefs, and more. UM Entrepreneurship Center attends White House meeting BY CATHARINE SKIPP
In an early December gathering at the White House, the Startup America Partnership convened its all-entrepreneur board and announced $475 million in new committed resources to help startups scale, pushing the total value of its partner offerings to over $1.2 billion. The latest round of partner commitments are a direct response to specific requests made by the nearly 2,000 Startup America firms that already have registered with the Partnership since the release of its platform in September. Dr. Susan Amat, executive director of The Launch Pad at the University of Miami, represented Startup Florida as a regional co-leader. “Presenting to the administration and the Startup America Board and corporate partners about the activities and opportunities to support entrepreneurs in Florida was an incredible experience,” Amat said. “In taking a leadership role in the state, the reach and resources of The Launch Pad Network will expand to better meet the needs of our students and alumni, and by extension the Florida business community as a whole.” The Launch Pad, a novel entrepreneurship initiative developed at the University of Miami, helps both students and alumni create new enterprises, with a particular focus on the university’s home in South Florida. These aims are achieved by treating entrepreneurship as a mainstream career, a legitimate way to make a living, and by linking young entrepreneurs to regional commercial and community networks. Board members, sponsors, regional leaders and entrepreneurs met to discuss how to best utilize these resources and the Partnership’s platform to help startups grow in order to create jobs throughout the country. Joining the board at the White House were representatives from regional
initiatives, including Startup Florida, Startup Connecticut, Startup Illinois, Startup Massachusetts and Startup Tennessee. “The Startup America Partnership is focused on helping young companies grow because with their success come job creation and a stronger American economy,” said Steve Case, chair of the Startup America Partnership. “Our board members are perfect examples of founders who have succeeded in turning their visions into successful, high-growth ventures that employ hundreds of thousands of people.” According to the Kauffman Foundation, companies less than 5 years old accounted for all of the net job growth in our country between 1980 and 2005. Young firms’ success is often dependent on access to a variety of resources that help them grow. New corporate commitments to the Startup America Partnership support the growth of startups in five key areas: expertise, services, talent, customers and capital. “With our latest round of partners, we’ve continued to build out the offerings that startups have identified as being crucial to their growth,” said Scott Case, CEO of the Startup America Partnership. “Every startup in the country should register now to utilize these resources and jumpstart their growth.” Each Startup America Firm has access to a personalized dashboard — their “Growth Kit” — with which they can connect to resources and find the most relevant offerings based on their specific needs, stage of growth, and location. They also have access to an exclusive online community of other founders and startup team members where they can interact with Partnership representatives, share best practices and support their fellow entrepreneurs. Miami-Dade Transit seeks part-time bus operators BY KARLA DAMIAN
Miami-Dade Transit is seeking applicants for the position of part-time bus operator. The department will be accepting applications online at <www.miamidade.gov/jobs>, now through Jan. 3, 2012. Those who are selected can earn as they learn. Bus operator trainees earn $14.71 per hour, and continue gaining experience as part-time bus operators. Miami-Dade County benefits will be explained to applicants during orientation. Bus operators also are eligible to apply for other positions within Miami-Dade Transit — offering them career advancement within the largest transit department in Florida and 14th largest in the United States. To be selected, applicants must successfully pass a background screening and physical exam, and must have the following: • A high school diploma or a General Education Diploma (GED); • A photo identification, such as a Florida driver’s license, and
