We attribute our success to relationships we’ve made through the Aventura Marketing Council and the people on our team who have helped us build a great company. Marksman also supports many charities, public schools and hospitality and tourism programs fostering future leaders.” While Marksman is committed to providing the highest level of customized service in the property security industry, Dee emphasized the Miami Dolphins and Sun Life Stadium remain focused on business development and growth – as well as positioning the team and stadium in the forefront of the sports and entertainment field. Dee noted, “The season has not unfolded the way we all hoped but there’s no script to a game or a season and I think that’s what makes the NFL so exciting.
“We’re committed to trying to bring a Super Bowl championship back here - but a sports team is at its best in relation to its community outreach when it empowers and encourages people to rally around proactive ideas Dolphins’ endeavors involving the community include our Special Teams program which now has over 2,000 volunteers; and the Dolphins Cycling Challenge that raised over $500,000 this year for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.” Providing an update on Sun Life Stadium, Dee said, “We’re committed to making sure the stadium is positioned and equipped to serve this community’s best interest as we move into the future. The potential renovation of the Miami Beach Convention Center is also of extreme importance to the tourism industry. We’ve been talking with community leaders about ways to expand and upgrade the stadium and convention center that can
be integrated in a way that makes sense for economic development and job creation. “We have a Super Bowl bid coming up in October for the 2015 game; and the 2016 bid will follow in May of 2011. What’s especially important about the 2016 bid is it’s the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl and it also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the Dolphins. Wouldn’t it be great if the Dolphins were in that 2016 Super Bowl on our home field celebrating a championship? If you can dream it and visualize it - it may happen! We want to make sure we’re ready for those two Super Bowl bids.”

Fairmont Turnberry Isle strengthens core through new partnership with Pure Pilates To further expand its comprehensive wellness program, the legendary Fairmont Turnberry Isle has teamed with the top Pilates center in the southeast — Pure Pilates — to provide resort guests, club members and locals with the best instruction South Florida has to offer. As part of this new partnership, the 300-acre resort added a Romana Pilates® studio (one of only a handful found in the United States) that features top-of-the-line Gratz equipment within its award-winning Willow Stream Spa at 19999 West Country Club Drive. Pure Pilates at Fairmont Turnberry Isle is overseen by owner and certified instructor Karen Winselmann, whose long list of clients include professional baseball and basketball athletes, the British Olympic Swim Team, aspiring ballet dancers and ice skaters. Pure Pilates hosted the worldwide annual Romana’s Pilates® Conference in both 2009 and 2010. In addition, the acclaimed center has been entrusted for the past two years with arranging the Grand Master Extravaganza, a continuing profes-
sional education for hundreds of instructors. Classes and private sessions will be led by Jaclyn Bachor, who recently moved to Miami from New York. Both Winselmann and Bachor trained under Romana Kryzanowska, a protégé of Joseph Pilates, and teach the same system of exercises and philosophies originally developed and taught by the renowned inventor and his wife, Clara Pilates. “When we were first approached by Fairmont Turnberry Isle about this unique partnership, we knew right away this would be an excellent fit,” said Winselmann. “The addition of a renowned Pilates’ program to the resort’s large array of world-class amenities provides a great draw for locals looking for a day or weekend getaway. Plus, this is the only Romana Pilates® studio in the Aventura area.” Private lessons and group classes are available Sunday through Saturday by appointment only. Mat classes are kept to a maximum of six people. To book a class or private session, call the Willow Stream Spa at 305-933-6930. Pure Pilates also has a studio in Fort Lauderdale.
Jason Stein demonstrates the true meaning of giving back Thirteen year-old Jason Stein of Aventura recently presented his grandfather, who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, with a check while at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center last month with money he raised to contribute to the National Parkinsons Foundation. Jason, an 8th grader at Miami Country Day School, son of Janet and Clifford Stein of Aventura, and the Grandson of Carolyn and Gerald Stein, of North Miami Beach, raised $780 for the National Parkinsons Foundation on behalf of his Grandfather, through a website he created with assistance from the National Parkinsons Foundation. Visit www.parkinson.org/jason to see Jason’s Community Fundraising Page, which is currently up and running, and includes a heartfelt wish from Jason for his grandfather, and instructions on how you can be a donor. “I wanted to do something that was truly meaningful, that others would benefit from,” Jason remarked. Additionally, Jason emailed hundreds of people to let them know about the website including schoolmates, teachers, and even

Foundation, is a non-profit organization with close ties to the University of Miami’s Department of Neurology, and Parkinson Disease and Movement Disorders. The chapter began with 15 patients and has
since reached over 100, including members from the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, the Aventura Community Recreation Center, Temple Sinai, and MAR-JCC. Bill Marsa, president of the Herbert Kay Parkinson chapter, runs classes and meetings at the MAR-JCC and welcomes participants to become members with open arms. “Join us for monthly meetings at the JCC or attend one of our weekly classes, which includes Tai Chi, exercise classes, a social hour tea time, breathing and meditation, caregiver sessions, yoga, strength training, and movement classes,” Bill explains. This extensive and growing list of activities is made possible by the partnership Bill has forged with the MAR-JCC. ‘Many happy returns’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY If your gift return pile now looks about as high as your stack of post-holiday credit card bills, here are some productive problem-solvers for surviving the necessary evil of making “return-trips”: Problem: When the traffic dissipates, you venture back to the mall to return a sweater from Aunt Betty that’s so not your style. All of a sudden, guess who you run into? “Oh, hi Aunt Betty – what a surprise to see you here!” you exclaim, frantically trying to hide the fluorescent lime green sweater with orange and purple polka dots behind your back. Solution: Return gifts when stores first open - or right before they close. It will be easier to get a parking spot – plus, the odds of running into the person who knows nothing about your taste will be drastically reduced. Problem: You want to return an electronic gift but the “best buy” on everything else
you might want is at least $50 more. Repeat this scenario a few more times and you’ll see why leaving home with the best return intentions can often add to the deficit on those post-holiday credit card bills you still haven’t paid off! Solution: Pay the difference for the item you really want and think of it as “a bargain.” Then make another New Year’s resolution to zero out your credit card balances so you can start with a clean slate on the Visa card you never got around to activating. Problem: A friend asks if she can borrow “that cute silver purse” she got you since it will go so well with her outfit. Oops! You already returned the silver purse and bought a wallet you really needed instead. Solution: Return to the store and when you find out they don’t have the silver purse anymore, log on to eBay and win it for a ridiculously high bid. Maybe later you’ll find out the seller is your nefarious friend who “conned you for Christmas.” So whether you wind up getting a refund, store credit or taking the solemn retail oath to never wear something once and return it the next day, remember there’s at least one special gift you wouldn’t ever want to exchange: Enjoying life in the city of Aventura during yet another Happy New Year!

Cold hands, warm hearts at JCS’ Lapciuc Reception Despite the chilly temperatures outside, Jewish Community Services’ Milk & Honey Reception Dinner recently hosted by Tania and Israel Lapciuc warmed the hearts of over 130 guests who gathered at the couple’s beautiful Miami Beach home. After the candles were lit to mark the seventh night of Chanukah, a very special program celebrated some of JCS’ most generous supporters. This was the eighth consecutive year the Lapciuc family graciously hosted this event to thank donors for contributing to JCS’ food distribution programs which help seniors and others in need throughout MiamiDade County. The evening included keynote remarks from Jackson Health System’s President and CEO Dr. Eneida Roldan and a violin solo by Daniela Lapciuc. One of JCS’ critical food distribution programs, the Milk & Honey campaign takes place each year around Rosh Hashanah when volunteers deliver 500 food baskets to seniors and others in need. In addition, the JCS Kosher Food Bank receives over 2,500 visits annually while the Senior Meals programs provide more than 233,000 meals to individuals who are at nutritional risk. The largest Jewish social service agency in South Florida, JCS annually serves over 35,000 people, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, with mental health, senior support and vocational programs.

Karel Exposition goes social
Larry Karel, President, Karel Exposition –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Connecting with his customers has always been a priority for Larry Karel, president, Karel Exposition Management. Karel Exposition Management (KEM), is the nation’s largest producer of regional furniture and accessory trade shows, known for showcasing an exceptional roster of manufacturers and distributors. Always one to embrace new technology, the Aventura based company, is leading the path in the furniture industry and the entire team is embracing social media. “We want to make it easy for exhibitors and buyers to find us. Social media has added a new enthusiasm in my office. We are re-connecting with customers we lost touch with and communicating with new cus-
tomers from across the country,” said Karel. The company has been incorporating social media in their day to day business for the past few months and with great success. “We are talking to people we lost touch with, generating new leads and selling space,” Karel said. “Everyone is excited!” Karel remembers the day when he pleaded with his father to buy a fax machine and was met with resistance. “Social media is a powerful way for people to stay informed and connected and to stay competitive we will utilize all of the tools at our disposal,” Karel added. Karel’s mantra has always been “For less than a tank of gas, buyers can drive to the show in their own hometown.” And that’s where KEM enters the picture. The company provides cost-effective venues for exhibitors and buyers to conduct business. Don’t look for lavish parties or trendy seminars. These are no-frills shows. At the end of the day, the show managers turn out the lights and everyone leaves for the night. This is great news! For distributors, representatives and manufacturers there’s no costly, permanent showroom to maintain. It’s great for the buyers since the show comes to them. There’s no airfare, hotel room or car rental needed. “So, follow us on Twitter, be our friend on Facebook and connect with us on Linkedin,” he added.

Sponsorship deal offered to support Krop Senior High baseball team
BY LYNN CARROLL
It may seem out of season, but it’s time to play hardball, say the folks at Dr. Michael M. Krop Sr. High School. For the uninitiated, they’re talking about the Krop Lightning nine. It strikes far more than it strikes out, but to succeed it needs teamwork both on the inside and from the stands. In that spirit, Krop officials are recruiting supporters for what they call a win-win situation to keep the ball in play. Here’s the pitch directly from Krop’s College Assistance Program Advisor Robert E. Roddy. “We’re offering a full-color, 6-foot banner on our baseball field along with a full-color coupon in our new coupon book,” he says. “It’s an awesome way to promote a business!” Roddy is asking fans to please pass the word along to any business that could bene-
fit from getting word about its products or services out on the playing field. “A small contribution to Krop,” he says, “can not only make a huge difference for our team, but also for any enterprise.” Roddy says in the past Krop has enjoyed a great response from local businesses popular in the community, and always hopes to add to its roster of supporters. And time flies like a shot to the outfield, he says, so there’s some urgency in the situation. “Donors should please contact me as soon as possible,” Roddy says, “as our coupon book and the banners are going to press very soon.” Contributions, he adds, are 100% taxdeductible. Checks in any amount can be made out to Lightning Baseball Booster Club II and sent to Adrienne Scheck, 19400 Ambassador Ct., Miami, FL 33179, or call 305-652-6808, x. 184.

Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING What are you expecting to happen today, next week, next year? Whatever you are expecting to happen will happen. It is a law of nature. If you expect good things to happen they will. If you expect bad things to happen they will. It is as simple as that. That’s the way things transpire. Did you ever have something go wrong and you immediately think “Oh, no the day is ruined “? Inside you are thinking bad things will continue to occur all day long and sure enough they do. If you expect something you are regarding it as likely to happen. You look for it to be your due in life. So, set your expectations very high. Remember that your past does not define you or limit you. Rearrange your thinking process and your style of thinking. Create your own scenarios. You must envision, suppose, antici-
pate, hope for, presume and assume that it will happen. Expect you health to improve Expect your finances to improve. Expect your relationships to improve and they will. It is vital that you leave room for another very important part of this process. Leave room for surprises and serendipity. You need to believe and expect the unexpected to happen. You can start the New Year out right by focusing on your expectations. Take each aspect of your life and day dream about the ideal outcome. Allow yourself to feel the joy of that outcome. Feel the happiness spreading through your body right down to your toes. Smile when you think about it. Think about it and feel it often. You can also start each day by focusing on your expectations for every event and encounter you are going to have that day. It may seem mundane and too simple but the results will be spectacular. You will be amazed at the power of this technique. You will be delighted with the changes that will occur and the life-changing effect this will have. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Can Art Improve Your Health? BY CARI COHEN M Once in a while after one of my classes ends, a student will comment, “In my opinion, art is the best therapy,” or, “When I paint, I get away from the world. I relax, and I forget about everything.” Personally, there are days when I feel like I need to paint in order to unleash my inner energy. This has lead me to wonder, why do these feelings of pleasure arise when we express ourselves artistically? And how much truth is in the statement that art can improve our health? It has been in fact proven that anxiety and stress, such common factors in our daily lives, can negatively affect how we feel, not only emotionally but also physically by weakening our body functions. Our immune system tends to weaken as a response. In response, people sometimes turn to physical activity, which undoubtedly helps. However, exercise doesn’t always seem to be enough since we don’t only need to tend to our physical health, but also to our spiritual health in order to feel whole. There is a theory, which has gained a lot of support, that states that artistic expression has the power to change our state of mind by
getting rid of our negative thoughts and allowing positive energy to come in. Therefore, it isn’t a coincidence that alternative therapies such as art therapy that use art as a form of expression are gaining momentum every day. Art doesn’t only stimulate our capacities or develop our creativity and expression as a way to improve ourselves personally, but it also allows us to express our feelings, emotions, and thoughts, ultimately instilling confidence and security in ourselves. Furthermore, art has a liberating and cathartic effect. Every individual is capable of being creative and this is a necessity, an innate impulse found in most people. The ability to create something is where the strength of therapeutic art comes in. Satisfaction, relaxation, and fun are only some of the therapeutic qualities one can find when they engage in an artistic activity. Simply choosing an artistic project that interests you can be the beginning of a healthier life as well as a more satisfied self. “Imagination is not a talent of some men, but is the health of every man” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital receives federal approval to open Pediatric Heart Transplant Program First patient successfully transplanted With an expert cardiac transplant team standing by and one patient waiting for a heart, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital achieved an extraordinary milestone on Dec. 15. Just five days earlier, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, the leading Children’s Hospital in Broward and Palm Beach counties, received federal approval from UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) to launch a pediatric heart transplant program, clearing the path for pediatric cardiac surgeon Dr. Frank Scholl to perform the first heart transplant in the hospital’s history. “This is a momentous occasion for our team, but it’s also great news for our surrounding communities and the patients and families we have the pleasure to serve,” said Dr. Scholl, chief of pediatric cardiac surgery at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “The establishment of this program is truly an advancement in medical care in this community, and one that will impact the lives of many children and families in years to come.”
ists and cardiologists including Kak-Chen Chan, M.D.; Lilliam Valdes-Cruz, M.D.; and Ming-Lon Young, M.D.; as well as with Director of Cardiac Surgery Richard Perryman, M.D., and Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Gerald Lavandosky, M.D. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, is a facility of Memorial Healthcare System, the fifth-largest public healthcare system in the nation. It is a patient- and family-centered care facility that meets the complex needs of children by providing a wide scope of inpatient and outpatient pediatric services supervised by the largest diversity of board-certified specialists in the region. As an advocate for children’s healthcare and related causes, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital offers community education, child safety programs and the Conine Clubhouse, a home away from home for families of hospitalized children. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cardiac Transplant team includes (l-r) Maryanne Chrisant, MD, Medical Director; Chris Mashburn, RN, Director of Clinical Programs and Lead Transplant Coordinator; and Dr. Frank Scholl, Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Heart Transplant Program is one of only two programs in South Florida, an area that serves close to 1.5 million children. There are now a total of four pediatric heart transplant centers in Florida: Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg and Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville. With this new program in Broward County, many families will benefit from having a specialized team closer to home. Prior to federal approval, statistics showed that a large number of children did not have sufficient access to heart transplant services, and many had to seek services outside South Florida and even out of state. The approval of the program is the culmination of years of strategic planning, including the formation of a pediatric cardiac transplant team with the right mix of expertise and compassion. “The pool of pediatric heart transplant
experts is quite small and finding physicians that would fit in well with our team, had exceptional clinical skills and a philosophy of patient-and family-centered care, was certainly well worth the effort,” said Nina Beauchesne, administrator for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Pediatric Services for Memorial Healthcare System. The core Pediatric Heart Transplant team includes Dr. Scholl; Maryanne R.K. Chrisant, M.D, director of pediatric cardiac transplant, heart failure and cardiomyopathy; and Chris Mashburn, RN, lead transplant coordinator. “Pediatric heart transplant demands a comprehensive team effort,” Dr. Chrisant said. “Beyond the physicians, we’re fortunate to have a team of high caliber, dedicated nurses, intensivists, perfusionists, and laboratory medicine experts – all levels of patient care – who are helping us make this dream a reality.” The transplant team works closely with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital hospital-

Just a few days to get end of year finances in order Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH It’s just a few days until New Year’s Eve and the start of a new year, 2011. And that means we’re running out of time to get our last minute financial planning done for 2010 and to get our finances in order for the new year. So what do those plans entail? Paying off holiday bills, tax planning, healthcare spending accounts, insurance options for next year, and that’s just for starters. All these issues will challenge our family budgets and we’re running out of time to prepare. Still, it’s not too late to start by asking
yourself these questions: • How much do I owe on all my bills and what will my yearly income be this year? • Am I withholding enough on taxes to avoid a bigger tax bill next April? • Do I have any money remaining in any flexible spending accounts that I need to use or lose? • What is my money doing for me and where can I cut expenses? • Should I rebalance my investments between stocks, bonds or cash? These are all viable questions and should give you a good basis for determining your strategy. On the other hand, financial experts say that if you ignore your end of the year money management, it could leave you with an expensive — and unwanted — New Year’s surprise. Watch Al Sunshine’s “CBS Money Watch” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon.

2011 Chevy Corvette marks 58 years of production Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS I’m still somewhat amazed that the Corvette made it through the recent General Motors bankruptcy to continue as a part of the Chevrolet product line. After all, it certainly doesn’t meet the new criteria for smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles. But, survive it did and next year Corvette will mark 58 years of production to continue the claim to being “America’s sports car.” The 2011 Corvette model year sees the same product lineup, one that includes the base coupe and convertible, the rejuvenated Grand Sport and the Z06 and ZR1 performance models. The base Corvette and the Grand Sport models are powered by the LS3 V-8, while the racing-inspired Z06 is equipped with the 505-hp LS7 engine and built on a lightweight chassis. The ZR1 gets a unique supercharged LS9 6.2-liter engine and is the fastest, most powerful car ever
offered by Chevrolet. The 6.2-liter LS3 small-block V-8 engine in Corvette and Grand Sport models is rated at 430 hp and develops 424 pounds-feet of torque with the standard exhaust system. An optional dual-mode exhaust system brings the power to 436 horses and 428 poundsfeet of torque. A standard six-speed manual transmission and an optional six-speed paddle-shift automatic are offered. The Grand Sport was a runaway hit in its debut last year, accounting for almost half of all coupe sales and 70 percent of convertibles. The Grand Sport returns for 2011 with Magnetic Ride Control as an option that includes Goodyear F1 Supercar Gen 2 tires when the car is equipped with a manual transmission. The Grand Sport has widebody styling that gives it wider fenders, a wider track, wider wheels and tires. It has revised shocks, stabilizer bar and springs, and specific gearing to deliver better handling, and it clocks 0-60 in a head-snapping four seconds. A launch control system is standard on models equipped with a manual transmission to optimize performance for full-throttle starts on a racetrack. In the competitive mode, the system will hold a predetermined engine speed while the driver puts the pedal

to the floor, allowing a quick clutch release. The system modulates engine torque 100 times per second to maximize traction. Corvette models offer two suspension choices that allow you to choose the setup that best suits your driving style. The standard suspension is tuned for a balance of ride comfort and precise handling. The optional Magnetic Selective Ride Control suspension features magneto-rheological dampers that can detect road surfaces and adjust the damping rates to those surfaces almost instantly for optimal ride control.
The Corvette interior is inspired by the car’s dual-cockpit heritage. The instrument panel and doors are covered with cast-skin foam-in-place trim that looks like a leather panel. Pricing on the 2011 Corvette starts at $49,900. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Honoring the men and women serving our country this holiday season By Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz With the holiday season upon us, this is the time of year we gather with our family and friends to celebrate all the blessings we have received. But not everyone has the chance to share the holidays with their loved ones during this joyous time of year. The men and women of our armed forces regularly spend their holiday season protecting our country, and for the past nine years many of our deployed service members have been actively engaged in combating terrorism around the world. As we join family and friends this holiday season and reflect upon 2010, we shouldn’t forget to give thanks to every man and woman who has served our country, or is serving our country, to keep us safe and free. These brave men and women have nobly served our country so that all of us can live free from tyranny. We must never forget this. For over a quarter of a millennium, our country’s citizens have defended the core principles of our democracy – principles set out so eloquently by Thomas Jefferson, and embedded in the Declaration of Independence.
He wrote: “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These are powerful words – and even more powerful principles. Jefferson’s message stood the test of time and has inspired generations. But we know all too well that living by these principles does not come easily, without pain or a price. Every generation has fought to preserve our freedom and defend life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And every generation has lost young servicemen and women in that defense. One important way my office gives back to local veterans is by hosting an annual Veterans History Project. The project collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. The event held in my district every year gives local high school students an opportunity to interview local U.S. Veterans and gather first-hand accounts of their experiences. Over the past several years we have had the chance to sit down with local veterans and hear stories from

World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. In 2008, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to interview a member of the famed Tuskegee Airman, the first African American military aviators in the armed forces. It was a conversation I will never forget. After the interviews and materials are collected, they are transported to Washington, DC where the stories will be catalogued at the Library of Congress to be preserved as a part of our nation’s history. But in a time of war we know that not all of our troops come home safely. Since the war started in Afghanistan in 2001, more than 1,400 American soldiers have been killed. On November 13th, Juan Rivadeneira from Davie died serving our country in Afghanistan. He was 27 years old. He and other soldiers were attacked by a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest in Kandahar. Corporal Jorge E. Villacis, of Sunrise, Florida died December 12th when his unit was attacked by an insurgent with a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device while serving in Howz E Madad, Afghanistan. He was only 24 years old. Both of these young men called South Florida home. Both of these young men answered their country’s call to service. And both of these young men left proud, but grieving family members behind. Juan and Jorge met at Fort Campbell Kentucky and they were deployed to Afghanistan together in June. Maybe it was the fact that Juan’s family had roots in Venezuela, and Jorge’s family was from Ecuador. Maybe it was that
both of them hailed from South Florida. Or maybe it was that they just hit it off. But regardless of the reason, Juan and Jorge soon became close friends. In fact, in 2009, Juan and Jorge and their families joined together to celebrate Thanksgiving at Fort Campbell. I didn’t have the pleasure to know Staff Sgt. Rivandeneria, nor Corporal Villacis. Nor did our families know each other. Yet, my family, and our nation, and everyone reading this column owes a deep debt of gratitude for the service and ultimately the untimely loss of these two brave young men. America’s service men and women face great danger and sacrifice to protect our nation and they should be able to count on the full and unwavering support of their government. As a Member of Congress I will always honor their service and do my part to honor the sacred trust we all have with those who wear the uniform of the United States of America. I am proud to be an advocate for veterans and service members, and my office is always open to you. Ros-Lehtinen reaffirms commitment to winning strategy in Afghanistan, praises troops for progress against insurgents BY LEE STEPHENS U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented today on the administration’s release of President Obama’s year-end report on the war in Afghanistan. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen: “The President’s year-end report shows steady signs of progress in Afghanistan, particularly in Southern Afghanistan and in the crucial efforts to train Afghan forces. I am deeply thankful to the men and women of our Armed Forces, whose valor and sacrifice is making all of our progress possible. “It is extremely important that we keep on top of what’s working and what isn’t, as well as where we are making progress and where the trouble areas remain. That’s the way to put together and implement a winning strategy. “The focus must remain on implementing a winning strategy, and not an exit strat-
egy. It is my hope that, as we move closer to July 2011, the administration is guided by conditions on the ground and will not commence a withdrawal against the advice of and facts presented by its commanders in the field. The strategy must be eventbased, not chronologically-based. Meeting goals and objectives is the proper barometer of U.S. successes in Afghanistan, rather than the passage of time. “Pakistan also has a crucial role to play in Afghanistan, and, moving forward, must do a better job at confronting the presence of al-Qaeda, Taliban insurgents, and other militant extremists, and at eliminating their operational safe-havens. “Also, looking ahead to the next Congress, I am eager to work even more closely with the administration to exert strong oversight of our efforts in Afghanistan to help ensure that corruption, mismanagement, and waste do not jeopardize our mission.”

How to be ‘resolute’ about New Year’s resolutions
Page 31
Food of All Nations, D.B.A.
COMPILED BY BARI AUERBACH At least half of all Americans say they’ve made New Year’s resolutions for 2011 with top vows revolving around weight loss, more exercise, quitting smoking, and getting better organized. While most people who make resolutions keep their promises for at least part of the New Year, a great percentage never get around to implementing their best intentions. But according to PCMike featured on NBC 6, the good news for the New Year is that modern technology and the Internet can help you reach your goals. If your resolution is to lose weight, visit the website www.sparkpeople.com. It’s a free social networking site providing support, advice and online tools to track nutrition and exercise. You can also interact with Spark Teams comprised of other people with shared goals. For fitness, check out www.FitDay.com. Beyond the computer program available for purchase, there is a free on-line service enabling you to keep a diary of your food intake. that can be analyzed for nutritional information. You can also monitor how you’re doing that day in reaching your goals. If your resolution is to get organized and be more productive, visit www.Evernote.com. This free site works on the web, computers or mobile phones – conveniently letting you make to-do lists, capture web clippings or anything you want to remember or research. It can also organize and stores everything in searchable notebooks. Staying Resolute According to Time magazine,

research shows that in the long term, the pleasure of victory is a better incentive than the agony of defeat – if all you do is punish yourself for failure, you won’t stay motivated to change for very long. Reward yourself for sticking to your limits and focus on the benefits of changing. For example, if your goal is to drink less or lose weight, treat yourself to something you want each time you successfully resist a tempting dessert or achieve a goal, like a month of abstinence. Success tends to beget greater success. If you do slip back into old patterns, avoid recriminations. Research shows if you keep working at it, you’ll get better over time. F o r some people, trying to moderate bad habits is not achievable or takes more effort than abstaining altogether. As the philosopher Saint Augustine said, “Complete abstinence is easier than perfect moderation.”

Miami Art Museum breaks ground for new building BY ALLIE SCHWARTZ
Following years of planning and anticipation, Miami Art Museum (MAM) has broken ground for its new Herzog & de Meuron-designed facility in Downtown Miami’s Museum Park and next to the future home of the Miami Science Museum. The groundbreaking ceremony took place the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the museum’s new site overlooking Biscayne Bay. The new Miami Art Museum is scheduled to open to the public in 2013. “Miami Art Museum’s groundbreaking at Museum Park is a giant step forward in Miami’s emergence as one of the world’s great cultural cities,” said Aaron Podhurst, chairman of Miami Art Museum’s board of trustees. “The launch of this construction process signals that the public and private sectors are committed to enhancing Miami’s profile as a global arts destination and we are proud that Miami Art Museum factors prominently into that reputation. “Our new building will fill many roles – as a repository for our city’s greatest works, a resource for learning, an economic engine in our urban core, a gathering place for Miami residents and visitors, and as an architectural icon of our city.” The groundbreaking ceremony featured remarks by Podhurst, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Commission vice chair-elect Audrey M. Edmonson, MiamiDade County manager George M. Burgess and MAM director Thom Collins. MiamiDade County Commissioner Sally A. Heyman and Herzog & de Meuron senior partner Christine Binswanger also were onhand for the milestone. The new Miami Art Museum will comprise 200,000 square feet of programmable space, including 120,000 square feet of interior space — more than three times the size of the museum’s current facility — and 80,000 square feet of exterior space ideal for the display of works of art, educational activities,

relaxation and dining. The building will house an educational complex with a library, auditorium, classrooms and workshop space, as well as a café and museum store. “Launching our construction timeline is certainly an exciting moment in the history of Miami Art Museum and Miami, but I’m most looking forward to the expanded possibilities that the new facility will unlock on the programming side,” Collins said. “From large-scale touring exhibitions that will expose Miami to the world’s finest art works, to meaningful educational programs

for students young and old, the new Miami Art Museum will be a showcase for the power of the visual arts.” Total construction costs for the Miami Art Museum project are budgeted at $131 million, comprised of $100 million in MiamiDade county bond proceeds and $31 million in private sector support raised through the capital campaign. Miami Art Museum has raised an additional $15 million for the institution’s operating endowment and will continue to cultivate donor support throughout the construction project.
Beyond its impact on Miami’s cultural arts community, construction of the new Miami Art Museum is expected to positively influence the local economy. More than $37 million will be spent on local construction labor, and the museum is expected to draw 200,000 new visitors to Downtown Miami each year, accounting for a $12 million annual economic impact, according to a study by Miami Economics Associates.
