Hard Rock Café-Hollywood hosts holiday breakfast benefiting Jubilee Center of South Broward Aventura Marketing Council members help fight hunger BY BARI AUERBACH
A
ventura Marketing Council members recently helped make a “Thanksgiving difference” during a festive AMC holiday breakfast meeting “ho-ho-hosted” by the Hard Rock Café on Seminole Way in Hollywood benefiting Jubilee Center of South Broward – dedicated to providing emergency resources and relief from hunger and despair. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman helped welcome over 150 business and community leaders to the philanthropic event along with Hard Rock Café
Sales and Marketing Manager Robyn Melvin, General Manager Scott Jacobs and Jubilee Center executive director Joyce Curtis. Melvin noted, “Hard Rock International is focused on making the earth a safer, healthier and better place. Today we celebrate World Hunger Year. Did you know that 925 million children will go hungry in 2010 and the number one cause of hunger comes from poverty? Together, let’s imagine a world where all kids have enough food to eat that’s healthy and nutritious; and where they can take pride in growing, harvesting and selling

Around Town in Aventura Michael-Ann Russell JCC hosts former NBA great Kenny Anderson for Student Connection At-risk student program sponsored by Marlins Community Foundation and Miami-Dade Commissioner Sally Heyman The Aventura Marketing Council’s award-winning Education Committee, chaired by Eileen Glastein of Bnai Zion, has a long and strong history of providing monthly field trips for almost 100 at-risk students from their eight Dade Partner Schools. The November field trip in partnership with the All-Star Basketball Academy proved to be a very special one for the students as they met with former NBA star Kenny Anderson who spoke to them about sportsmanship, leadership qualities and the importance of staying in school. Then it was time for some lessons in ball handling, as Anderson, Jason Gilliam-Alexander, Jon Hirsch and volunteers from All-Star put the kids through a series of fundamental basketball drills designed to improve ball handling, passing and shooting skills. “I was a beneficiary of ‘give back’ programs where people lent me a helping hand, and I want to do the same in return,” said Anderson. “That’s why we created the All-Star Academy on Sundays at the MAR JCC from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.” For more information on the All-Star Basketball Academy, visit all-starbaseketballcamp.com or call Jon Hirsch at 305-978-9433.

new food. We can make this come true with hard work, love and conviction. “Hard Rock International and World Hunger Year (WHY) are dedicated to fighting the root causes of hunger and poverty by supporting grassroots organizations that create self-reliance, economic justice and equal access to nutritious and affordable foods. Founded in 1975 by the late musician and activist Harry Chapin and current executive director Bill Ayres, WHY works to put an end to hunger suffered by 49 million Americans and more than one billion people worldwide. Melvin pointed out that thanks to Yoko Ono’s support of Hard Rock International, World Hunger brochures feature the image of John Lennon with the theme Imagine There’s No Hunger. She also invited everyone to share in celebrating Hard Rock’s upcoming 40th anniversary marked by exciting “40 day and 40 night” activities. Speaking on behalf of the Jubilee Center, Joyce Curtis explained, “We serve hundreds of meals to people who line up every day and provide boxes of groceries. People who are hungry these days look like you and me - there are a lot of families and single mothers with children. Please come visit or volunteer and we’ll show you how your donations are put to good use.” During the breakfast, the Hard Rock Café’s gift for generosity was apparent as an incredible breakfast “feast” was served that would even stuff Santa. In keeping with the AMC’s gift for giving back, guests all brought a minimum of two cans of nonperishable food for the Thanksgiving drive benefiting Jubilee Center plus many also purchased distinctive “Imagine” red bracelets for a dollar to help feed one child three meals. Creating even more reason to “give thanks” to Hard Rock, lucky winners received great door prizes including a $100 gift card to Hard Rock Café-Hollywood won by Rita Regev of Optimar International Realty; a Hard Rock memorabilia book won by Jeff Greenman of Calder Racetrack and Casino; and tickets to “Rock of Ages” at the Broward Center donated by Broadway Across America won by Shelley Phillips of Fast Care.

Henry Ford and the Jews
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS When I grew up as a youngster in the 1930’s and 40’s, no Jewish family in my neighborhood owned a Ford automobile. Henry Ford, the American hero of the Industrial Age, who perfected the mass production of automobiles before World War I, was also one of America’s worst antiSemites. He spent much of his energy, money and time on the publication of the infamous forgery “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, as well as other scurrilous anti-Semitic tracts, to wrongfully inflict hatred against Jews in the American culture. According to author Neil Baldwin (The Mass Production of Hate), “Hitler read all of Ford’s publications, hung a portrait of Ford in his office, gave Ford a Nazi medal of honor and Fords were produced in Occupied Europe throughout the war. Ford, who considered running for the presidency in 1922, became increasingly antiimmigrant, anti-labor and anti-Semitic. He had purchased a newspaper, the Dearborn
Independent, which he then used for these views. In May 1920, Ford published the first of a series of articles titled “The International Jew: The World’s Problem. He ran those articles for 18 months, then published them as a book. Ford’s words were almost identical to Hitler’s in his book “Mein Kampf, stating that “Jews manipulated diplomacy to cause wars in which Christians died to enrich Jews. The “Independent published similar anti-Semitic articles for seven years until Aaron Sapiro, a California farm organizer, sued Ford for libel. Ford refused to testify and settled out of court. During the trial Jewish leaders “had called for a boycott of Ford’s cars and slumping sales may have played a role in the decision to settle.’ The Anti-Defamation League negotiated an agreement with Ford whereby Ford announced his anti-Semitic articles would never again appear in the “Independent. Ford alleged he did not know the “Protocols had been forged and offered the Jewish people his “future friendship and good will. Ford later claimed his signature on the agreement was forged, and that Jewish bankers caused World War II. He died in 1947, “apparently unchanged and unrepentant. Ford’s heirs publicly apologized for his behavior.

Clear the decks
Patricia C.Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING “Clear the decks” is a nautical expression. It means to finish what you are doing to do something more important. The decks have to be cleared of everything on a Carrier so that there is room for the incoming airplanes to land on deck safely. The unspoken message is to hurry up. You need to hurry up and clear the decks in your personal life as well. Clear your life so that new things can come to you. You have to clear your deck to prepare for the action and opportunities that are about to come into your life. You have a short period of time to do this before the New Year. Do everything you have to do to tie up your loose ends. Do the things that have been on your “To Do List” all year. Hurry up. Do it now and then you can start the New Year with a clean slate.
Clear out the clutter in your personal life and in your home, office and relationships. Clutter may have been useful in the past but it is no longer useful now. It is holding you back. Put away everything that is not necessary and prepare yourself mentally and physically. Make room for the new. Start today. Do not fall victim to procrastination. Procrastination is just a bad habit and like all habits it can be broken. This habit is a coping style for feelings of inadequacy and perfectionism. The fear of failure often prevents you from even starting to make changes in your life. The fear of change and the fear of something new can inhibit your efforts and increase your resistance to clearing the decks. Having a deadline like the end of the year will motivate and energize you. Focus on the possibilities Focus on how good it will feel. Anticipate the joy. Become excited about who and what can come into your life if you make room for it. Clear your decks. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Has Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center “Gone Hollywood”? For those in the know, there is a bona fide film production in the works right here in our own backyard. “The Celebration”, a documentary film by international cinematographer/biographer Eduardo Montes-Bradley, commemorating the 20th anniversary of Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center will be premiered on January 15, 2011 at the Temple gala. Much excitement is already brewing about appearances in the film by local community leaders William Landa, Don Soffer, Elaine Adler, and Mayor Susan Gottlieb to mention a few. With a nod to showbiz, there are no pix free of anecdotes. When Aventura’s finest surrounded Montes-Bradley at the gates of ATJC while he was aiming a telescopic lens at the dome, he was quick to respond without hesitation “Just let me shoot the Temple before the sun goes down”! Heaven forbid that the magic hour enhancing the Temple should be missed. Helicopter fly-overs, rolling camera trolleys, make up sessions, one-on-one consultations with the film crew, off the cuff stories and more

After just a few minutes, Montes-Bradley had everyone relaxed and recounting great stories about their commitment and involvement in the City and in the Center. We even heard the now famous story of Don Soffer, penciling in the plans for the yet to be founded City of Aventura on the back of a napkin. Temple President Laurence Herrup lived vicariously through the various stages of production and editing while Dr. Amir Baron, executive director of ATJC calmed every ruffled feather. For Montes-Bradley, who has worked with diplomats, writers and prominent individuals, the experience was summed up as “a unique opportunity to depict the soul of a city planned on a napkin, and the soul of Aventura is, no doubt in my mind, the ATJC”. The link between Heart Disease and Gum Disease BY DR. JOSE ALVAREZ, DMD Did you know there is a definitive link between heart disease and gum disease (periodontitis)? There is no doubt that good oral hygiene is a crucial element for overall good health. In this article, I want to specifically speak to you about the link that has been established between gum disease and heart disease. So, what are the exact causes for concern? Recent studies have shown that some types of bacteria can cause clumping of blood platelets, which can lead to clotting. If you gums are not healthy, and are providing little tissue resistance, these bacteria can get into the blood steam, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and/or stroke. Initially, the concern was raised back in the late 1980’s. Studies were conducted in Europe that presented an association between heart disease and gum disease. Further studies eventually confirmed these preliminary findings. How does this occur? Basically, when an infection (inflammation) is present your body produces C-reactive protein and
greater levels of inflammatory products. These are factors that have been known to increase the risk of someone developing heart disease, or suffering from a heart attack and/or stroke. Each of us should be concerned over gum disease, get regularly checked and develop good oral hygiene habits. But, anyone with heart disease, a family history of heart disease or stroke, people that have had heart valve problems, or heart valve replacements, should take special care with their oral hygiene and get their gum health evaluated frequently. Awareness is fundamental in providing prevention. If you have additional questions or concerns about this particular subject, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am here for the community and always glad to answer questions, or provide you with any information you may need regarding your dental health. Dr. Jose J. Alvarez, DMD is an awardwinning graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and an Implant Diplomate. He offers all phases of dentistry in a stateof-the-art facility serving Sunny Isles, North Miami Beach and Aventura. Dr. Alvarez is located at 3483 N.E. 163rd Street, North Miami Beach, FL 33160 and can be reached at 305-948-5002 or www.DrJJAlvarez.com.

‘Holiday diet strategies’ endorsed by Dr. Oz
BY BARI AUERBACH
Dr. Mehmet Oz continuously encourages overweight viewers of his TV show to get back on track by losing at least ten pounds with his “Just 10 Diet Plan.” But since holiday parties are making the “Just 10” health challenge even tougher, Dr. Oz recently enlisted the assistance of Dr. Michael Roizen, Chief Wellness Officer at the Cleveland Clinic, to present helpful tips since this is the time of year responsible for almost all weight gain. Three Rules to Survive Parties 1. Prepare a pre-party pack with choices like nuts and low-fat string cheese
them so you won’t be tempted to eat a lot and get a sugar high before even leaving the house. They also believe in the effective “eye your pie” strategy – which means pick only one dessert to eat that you like best. Eating Out While Shopping “Eat before you shop” or pack a snack like trail mix is the doctors’ best advice – but if you do decide to visit a food court at a mall, try sharing a slice of pizza with a friend or opting for a healthful salad. More Recipes For Diet Success *Cut out sugary sodas *Don’t eat snacks larger than your fist
2. No stacking your plate – there should be space between the foods 3. Have a 100 calorie cocktail – one serving of eggnog can have as much as 450 calories. Instead, opt for a wine spritzer that has only 100 calories. Stand Up to Sweets Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen suggest buying sweets to a take to a party instead of baking
*Don’t eat after 8 p.m. Accountability Weight yourself twice a week and write down what you’re eating at parties since “accountability” can help you keep count of how many calories you’re consuming. This holiday season, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen agree, “Staying true to your diet is the greatest gift of all!”
