and Ruth Karp, spoke about the tremendous satisfaction they receive for opening the students’ minds to new ideas. “There is tremendous talent and experience in this community,” said Dr. Karp, “and now the District is focusing our efforts on attracting the participation of individuals who have the potential to become some of our most valuable assets.” Supt. Carvalho shared some of the school district’s successes with the audience, including the recognition this year that Miami-Dade County Public Schools had achieved its highest graduation rate in history, and had also been recognized nationally for academic performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) with the Council of Great City Schools’ top financial award as well as a Broad Prize finalist for the fourth time. “Participate actively...share your wisdom and experience with students who are eager to learn...you can improve this world!” said Supt. Carvalho. The meeting was co-sponsored by Stern Bloom Media and Airstron. Maxine Lopez, president of Airstron, a full-service airconditioning supply and service company, noted, “It was our great pleasure to help sponsor this outstanding event and support the efforts of our school system.” Michael Stern, Aventura Commissioner and partner in Stern Bloom Media added, “Stern Bloom Media is always proud to align our name with Superintendent Carvalho and Dr. Karp!” For more information, call Dr. Karp’s office at 305.995.1334 or visit online at martinkarp@dadeschools.net (SEE MORE PHOTOS ON PAGE 6)

Around Town in Aventura Dr. Jayne Greenberg of Miami-Dade Public Schools recognized by the White House as Anchors Away Founder In a recent White House press release, President Obama said about Dr. Greenberg and a select few others national winners, “These dedicated individuals bring a wealth of experience and talent to their new roles and I am proud to have them serve in this administration. I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come.” Dr. Jayne Greenberg was recognized for developing one of the best physical education programs in the United States as well as creating a sailing program for students with autism, physical and intellectual disabilities that not only taught them how to sail their own little boats, but taught them science, math, physical education and life skills. With her program vision in mind, she visited her friends at the Aventura Marketing Council to help fundraise to purchase just one speciallyadapted access dinghy for the students. Within a matter of months, the Aventura Marketing Council (AMC) created the Anchors Away Foundation, had Aventura Vice Mayor Billy Joel as the Chairman and AMC Chairman Cliff Schulman, Weiss Serota Helfman and AMC President Elaine Adler on the new Anchors Away Foundation

Dr. Jayne Greenberg, Executive Director of Physical Education and Health Literacy for M-DCPS, was recently sworn in by Assistant Secretary of Health, Dr. Howard Koh, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, at the Hubert H. In December 2005, another eight boats were launched; in November, 2006, another 14 boats were launched; in October, 2009, another six boats were launched, and in April, 2011, another two boats were launched, bringing the total to 37 specially-equipped access dinghies that are currently sailing out of Oleta River State Park, Coconut Grove Sailing Club and the Miami Yacht Club. “We are proud to say that 100% of every dollar donated to the Anchors Away Foundation is spent on purchasing the boats, specialized motorized equipment for children who cannot use their arms, beach access wheelchairs and other necessary equipment and repairs for the continuation of this program,” noted Vice Mayor Joel. Dr. Greenberg added, “I was so proud to be at the White House accepting this honor...and I know that the Aventura Marketing Council through its Anchors Away Foundation played an integral role in developing this very special sailing program for students.”

May the Force be with you

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Science has proven that the Universe is full of cosmic energy. Science has also proven that human beings have an electrical field and emit electrical impulses, as well. It is very important that you accept that fact. Once you accept that fact you can connect with your own energy field your own life force and the energy of others. Stretch yourself beyond common assumptions and beliefs. Acknowledging your innate power strengthens and enhances it. Feel it. Believe in it. Encourage and support it in others. It is the beginning of something wonderful. It is the first step to your transformation and empowerment. There are many forces in life. Your own life force is your primary force. It is fundamental to your being. It is an expression of your power and dynamic energy. Other forces like your creative force and your guiding force are part of that original

force. You have the power to influence others and the world at large. What kind of force or energy are you sending out to others? Beyond your own individual emissions, you have the ability to receive the electrical impulses of others. Perhaps, someone is sending you a “Mayday.” Mayday is the internationally recognized distress signal. Given the nature of life, here is no doubt that people around you may be sending out a distress signal. It may be a weak signal or a strong one. Don’t ignore it Respond to it. Remind them that they have the power within them as well. Become their guiding force. Be the star burst of electrical energy that lights their way and changes their ions from negative to positive. Remind yourself daily of what you are made of. Stay aware of your force field. Focus on that vibrant force as you face the challenges in your life. Use all of your creative forces to reach your full potential. May you be a force for good. May you use your force to enable and ennoble others. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. George Atzerodt and the Plot to Kill Lincoln

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Few people realize that John Wilkes Booth’s conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln also included the killing of Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward. The time of the three assassinations was to be ten-fifteen on April 14, 1865. Atzerodt, a twenty-nine year old co-conspirator, was instructed by Booth to kill Johnson, who was staying at a local hotel. Atzerodt was to knock on Johnson’s door and shoot him when he responded. Atzerodt was then to disappear with the other co-conspirators into the Deep South. Atzerodt had serious emotional problems. He had consented to the original plot to kidnap the three men but “tried to back out when the plot was later changed to murder.” A few hours before the intended assassinations, Atzerodt started drinking whiskey at a local bar and became totally drunk. Johnson, the only president who never attended school, married young, became a

tailor and was taught to read and write by his wife. Having oratory skills, Johnson entered local politics in Tennessee and worked his way up to the U.S. Senate. With the South seceding, including Tennessee, Johnson remained loyal to the Union and was appointed by Lincoln as military governor of Tennessee. In the presidential election of 1864, Lincoln needed strong political support to keep the Southern Border States from seceding and asked Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, from Maine, to step down and Lincoln then appointed Johnson, who successfully ran with him on the ticket. Johnson was lucky. Too drunk to kill Johnson, Atzerodt backed out of the conspiracy and did not harm anyone. Arrested and charged with the conspiracy to kill Lincoln, Atzerodt, Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell and David Herold were found guilty by a Military Tribunal and all four were hanged by their necks. Four other men passively involved in the conspiracy were given jail terms. The time from the date of the death of Lincoln, to the arrests, trials, appeals and hanging was less than three months. The following year, the Supreme Court ruled that criminal trials of civilians before Military Tribunals were unconstitutional and must be held in Civil Courts.

Return to Common Sense, Please!

Rev. Wil Keyser RELIGION The lack of common sense is the basis for the majority of personal problems. Filing bankruptcy because of your credit card debt is not the fault of the banks or the credit card companies, it is the fault of the card holder who lacks the common sense to not spend what he does not have money to pay for. Common sense tells us to spend less than our income. Common sense also tells us that our ‘income’ is what has already ‘come in’, not what we hope for or anticipate. Playing the Lotto and gambling in general is aother example of the lack of common sense. Does it really make good common sense to choose a series of numbers and then depend on a ping-pong ball blown through a plastic tube to determine your ‘out-come’? I know, “somebody is going to win” is the rationale. However it is not often a 50/50 chance. At most times the odds of winning are nine digits to one, and not in your favor! Common sense also tells us to study, get education and training in a specific field and go to work rather than depend on a ‘jobs-program’ to provide for your needs; eat a balanced diet rather than overindulge; spend time finding out who and what a person is before becoming involved in a relationship rather than specualting that the other person will just get better with time. Common sense tells us, “it is what it is!” Jesus told his disciples about a young

son who lacked common sense. His father was a man of wealth and had arranged for an inheritance for both of his sons displaying his grasp of common sense. The younger son could not wait to get his share so he let common sense fly out the window. Dad lost his grip on common sense and gave the younger son all that he had coming to him. He immediately left home and went to a distant city to live on the ‘wildside’. He spent all he had and when a famine struck the land he had no money and nothing to eat. He displayed a complete lack of common sense in three areas: (1) Greed led him to get all he could get, and get it now! (2) He went as far away from good discipline and guidance as he could, spending all he had and (3) without any training and skills he hired on to a job which could not pay enough to meet his basic needs. He was at the point of eating the corn husks he was feeding the pigs he was attending. “When he came to his senses”, common sense told him that the men working for his father were much better off than he and here he was starving to death. Common sense was starting to kick in. He considered his options and decided to go back to his father, apologizing and being humble which showed much more common sense than his present status. His father ran out to meet him, welcomed him home and called for a celebration. That made sense! Everyone shared in the festivities except his older brother. He even told his father that there was no reason to celebrate. Now that did not make common sense at all! Perhaps it is time for all of us to Return to Common Sense, Please! Rev. Keyser is Pastoral Director, The Quiet Place 305 931 4823

Recruiting employees: What’s the challenge? The Atlantic|Pacific Management Perspective Employee recruitment is difficult for businesses of all sizes, especially in today’s business climate. The real estate industry has seen better days; therefore management companies are in a similar predicament. Management companies must recruit the strongest individuals to successfully manage their clients’ assets. Nicole Johnson, HR Director of Atlantic|Pacific Management (A|P) says, “We believe ‘growing bigger, growing better’ involves not only current employees, but future employees and clients alike.” A|P has found successful methods that allow for successful recruitment. Their accomplishments are in large part due to the HR Department established, and in particular, their Hiring & Recruiting Specialist, Jennifer Rosenberg. “Before getting to where we are, we faced challenges,” explains Johnson. “For instance, finding qualified candidates, who know about A|P and the benefits of working for the company.” In short, A|P has found social media vital to connecting with the right candidates. After finding qualified candidates, the challenge becomes selecting the candidate who is the best fit. By having a Hiring &

Recruiting Specialist handle these decisions in-house, they can better match candidates with hiring managers. Involving HR from beginning to end allows A|P to use the strongest resources to find candidates. According to Johnson, “Using information technology to streamline the process makes it simpler for everyone involved.” Transitioning into new condominiums often requires recruiting for several positions. Recently A|P transitioned into a local high-rise condominium with over 350 units. They maximized resources and selected the most qualified candidates to interview with the Board of Directors. The process appears lengthy; however, it is efficient compared to old practices. After weeks of searching, they found three highly qualified manager candidates for final interviews with the Board of Directors. In the end the candidate that best fit their needs to serve their owners was selected. A|P works to recruit the best, which lends itself to their retention rates and overall success.

Gain firm physique with ‘Nothing to Lose’ fitness plan BY BARI AUERBACH

There are countless diet plans for weight loss – but for those who don’t have pounds to shed and just want to gain a more firm, toned physique, a “Nothing to Lose” fitness plan combining healthy eating with resistance training can really help tighten anything too wiggly or jiggly! There are many people who appear thin, but still carry around a high percentage of body fat around the waist, hips, and thighs. They have very little muscle, and a body mass comprised mostly of fat. Two main reasons why you can become “skinny fat” include dieting without exercising; not eating enough calories; and doing too much cardio and not enough – if any - weight training. A “Nothing to Lose” fitness plan starts with filling up your grocery cart with lean proteins (chicken or turkey breast, egg whites, Greek yogurt); low-glycemic carbs (whole grains, oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes); fruits, vegetables and healthy fats (wild salmon, flaxseed, avocados, nut butters) – then prepare to eat frequently! If you eat too few calories while dieting, and you aren’t working out, your body will start to lose muscle but hold onto fat. If you don’t consume enough calories, the body’s starvation mechanisms kick in, and starts to shed muscle while holding on to fat reserves for energy. Many people think the secret to a great body is eating less—but actually eating more frequently (five or six healthy meals and snacks every three to four hours) can keep your metabolism revving, increase energy, keep insulin levels constant and support the quest to get your best body at any age. Following a “Nothing to Lose” fitness plan also means gaining more knowledge about common cardio vs. weight training misconceptions. Many people often step up cardiovascular exercises to stay in shape – but for firming and toning, weight training is the only way to get arms you’ll want to bare; gravity defying glutes; and thighs that

won’t make you want to close your eyes in dressing rooms! Many women are hesitant to start weight training programs because they’re afraid of becoming too bulky - but according to The American College of Sports Medicine, women generally have too much estrogen in their bodies to build large muscles. Efficient resistance training exercises for targeting common trouble spots include oblique crunches to tighten abdominals; walking lunges and squats to tone legs and glutes; and cable rope pressdowns or dumbbell kickbacks to firm up triceps. Body weight exercises including lunges, squats and pushups can also be performed at home with no fitness equipment or gym memberships required. Here’s another reason why to make a “firm” decision to start weight training: An average adult who lifts weights can gain almost two pounds of muscle and lose about four pounds of fat within two months. For example, let’s take two women who weigh the same, but one has a higher percentage of body fat. Female # 1 – 120 pounds, 30% body fat; Female # 2 – 120 pounds, 15% body fat – why? Because Female #2 is eating right, plus she cut back on cardio and started doing more weight training. So if gaining a firmer physique is your goal, try the “Nothing to Lose” fitness plan – proven to “turn flab into fab!”

Attention to prevention key for property maintenance KW PROPERTY MANAGEMENT & CONSULTING: ‘A professional and independent approach to management’ BY BARI AUERBACH For properties to “keep going & going & going” strong, it takes energized teams of highly qualified chief engineers and an efficient maintenance staff. But according to KW PROPERTY MANAGEMENT & CONSULTING, p reventative maintenance is primarily how cost efficiency is being maximized at properties of all types managed by the firm throughout Florida. KW PROPERTY MANAGEMENT & CONSULTING Senior District Manager Bruce Masia explains, “Our chief engineers and maintenance associates conduct regularly scheduled property walkthroughs and inspections, Preventative maintenance can effectively reduce future capital expenditures consistent with Board of Directors’ approved budgets. Optimal cost efficiency can also be achieved when repairs can be made by on-site personnel as opposed to outside vendors.” Masia oversees a continuing education program for KW PROPERTY MANAGEMENT chief engineers who routinely gather to discuss industry innovations and critical issues such as fire safety. “We also emphasize the benefits of familiarizing board members with their building’s infrastructure in order to facilitate more informed maintenance-oriented decisions,” he said. KW PROPERTY MANAGEMENT & CONSULTING

along with Kane & Co. CPA; Wells Fargo Insurance Services; and Becker & Poliakoff, legal and business strategists, recently presented an “Industry Trends” program in Aventura, where the firm is enhancing quality of life at communities including Turnberry Village, Williams Island and Plaza Del Prado. Board members in attendance learned more about the importance of preventative maintenance as well as other KW PROPERTY MANAGEMENT focus areas including financials/accounting, customer service and hospitality. “The program really got everyone thinking: Are we making the right investments and using budgeted funds wisely?” Masia said. “In today’s economy, it’s especially important to know how to extend the life of equipment to avoid very high replacement costs. Mercedes offers coupe in C-Class, redesigns sedan Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS They told me I was the first auto writer in the southeastern United States to drive the new 2012 Mercedes C-Class Coupe 63 AMG. I can only say that it was a privilege and I am thankful that I got through the week without having to sign some paperwork for traveling a bit too fast. The new two-door coupe marks the first time Mercedes-Benz has offered a traditional coupe in the C-Class segment. It complements the popular four-door C-Class sedan, which has received a major restyling for 2012 that involved 2,000 new parts, including new bumpers, headlights, front grille, an aluminum hood, LED taillights, a redesigned interior, a new 5.8-inch display screen and new-generation telematics. All told, there are 13 new standard equipment features on the 2012 C-Class sedan and coupe, as well as five new safety systems: Attention Assist — warns you if get drowsy while driving.

HOLD — feature on the Adaptive Brake system lets you take your foot off the brake pedal when the car is stopped, at a red light for example. Blind Spot Assist — provides a warning whenever a turn signal is activated with a car in a blind spot. Lane Keeping Assist — alerts drivers if the car drifts from its lane without the turn signals on. m — PARKTRONIC Guidance System tells you if the car will fit in the parking space you’re aiming for. Both the C-Class coupe and sedan are available in three different versions: C250 — powered by a new direct-injection, turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine (201 hp, 229 pounds-feet of torque). C350 Sport — has a new direct-injection 3.5-liter V-6 (302 hp, 273 pounds-feet). C63 AMG — with a normally aspirated 6.3-liter V-8 (451 hp, 443 pounds-feet) and AMG’s MCT multi-clutch transmission. With an optional AMG Development Package, the C63 AMG climbs to 481 hp. In addition, the C-Class sedan is available as a C300, with standard 4MATIC allwheel drive and the 3.0-liter V-6 engine (228 hp, 221 pounds-feet). The C250 and C300 sedans are available in a choice of Luxury or Sport trim. Sport models feature

New parents and pooches — resisting the urge to re-home your dog BY CAROL CARIDAD President, Paws4You Rescue

Transitioning into parenthood is one of the hardest times in people’s lives, and although there’s nothing like being a new parent, it’s often a time of conflicting feelings and emotions. In dog rescue, we often see dogs who are surrendered because an expecting family felt they needed to re-home their dog. At Paws 4 You Rescue, we feel it’s unnecessary to rehome your dog, especially a friendly dog, just because you’re expecting. There are so many fantastic resources these days for expecting families, including Dogs & Storks, a national program that helps families with dogs nurture safe, happy relationships among all family members, human and canine. We discourage parents from making the premature decision to re-home their friendly dog just because baby is on the way, and even after the baby arrives the decision to re-home could be one your family hugely regrets. We asked Paws 4 You Rescue volunteer and certified professional dog trainer Dee

Hoult, one of only six licensed Dogs & Storks presenters in Florida, to share with us the top three reasons why parents with new babies at home consider re-homing their dog: New parents feel their dogs would be “better off” in a new home. Just like the changes you’re experiencing during your newfound parenthood are stressful, imagine how your dog would feel if suddenly his whole world was turned upside down by losing the one he loves most – you. It’s extremely important that you have a support system of family and friends in place who can offer you guidance when you doubt your capabilities as dog owner. You are capable, even if you don’t feel like you are. Postpartum depression often triggers the impulsive decision to re-home. Some women experience depression at many levels which weighs heavily in the decision to re-home the family dog. Sometimes it’s not even the mother that is pushing for a dog’s re-homing. It could be a spouse or in-law who feels that the dog would be “happier” elsewhere and that by removing the family dog the mother’s stress will decrease. This simply isn’t true. Why? Because dogs are so forgiving. That is what is so beautiful about them. The overwhelming feelings you may be experiencing will pass. Knowing in advance that the impulsive re-homing phase

occurs when your baby is approximately three-months old can help you decide if your feelings are rational or just hormonal. Experience tells us that even parents with extremely well-behaved dogs even feel the overwhelming desire to find the dog a new home. The power of chemical imbalance. Trust us. Let it pass before you make any decisions. Life with new baby is stressful. Hormones, expectations, new roles, adjusting to parenthood, never-ending demands, possible complications post partum, no sleep and then just overall feelings of being overwhelmed – all these things add up to a new parents’ decision to re-home their dog. It’s possible one spouse suffers the loss of a job, there are multiple children in the home, health issues in the family, natural challenges of an aging dog and even a child mastering new skills of mobility which cause a parent to fear injury of that child by the family dog. Yet, for friendly dogs, there’s nothing good training and management protocols can’t resolve. In my interview with Dee she explained that despite a very busy caretaking schedule, there are still many ways new parents can continue providing for their pooch without even leaving the house. Some of her favorites include playing hide and seek

Paws4You with your dog, feeding your dog from a food dispensing toy and doing “kibble tosses” for good behavior. Lastly, we’d like to remind expecting parents that the life lessons children learn from dogs are priceless. Children who grow up in a home with a dog learn about the life cycle, patience, friendship and so much more. We urge expecting parents to work with a professional dog trainer before making any decisions regarding re-homing their dog. Life with baby and dog may be easier than you could have ever imagined.

Ray Princiotta ON REAL ESTATE Live Public Auctions are the one of the best ways to accelerate the sale of your home. If you are burning through cash, and need to sell, an auction can expedite the sale. If you are interested in selling your real estate at auction, you will need to work with an auctioneer who is a licensed Florida real estate broker. Based on your situation, there are various types of Auctions, the most popular are Absolute, Reserve, and Minimum Bid. Also, there are both Live and Online Auctions as well a hybrid Live and Remote, which is used to facilitate bidders from around the world. Each method produces results that compare with, and in many cases, exceed traditional brokerage methods. The properties are sold AS-IS with no contingencies, and can include all furnishings if desired.

February 1 - 7, 2012

Live Public Auctions - Accelerate the Sale of Your Home With an Auction, you set the date your property will sell. An Auction generates excitement by sending a clear message that you, the seller, are serious and highly motivated. Remember, motivated doesn’t mean desperate. It means that you want to sell and move on to the next chapter. We all know the feeling of relief when your property goes into contract … and the pressure and anxiety when your home lingers on the market. Every passing month you are carrying the property, and if you have already bought a new home, you are carrying two..Ouch! Auctions bring Buyers to the point of decision quickly. In preparation for the Auction, the Bidders must bring a Cashier’s Check in order to bid; and the winning Bidder must make a deposit of 10% of the contract price at the signing of the contract. This significant earnest money deposit means the property is far more likely to close. Another major difference between an auction and a tra-

ditional brokerage sale is there is no inspection period after the “Purchase and Sale agreement is signed by the Buyer and Seller. Prospective Bidders conduct their due diligence inspections before the

auction. So the day of the auction, everybody is set and ready to deal. Live “OnSite” Auctions create spirited bidding, producing higher sale prices. The Auction will quickly bring the true market price. (The True Market price is the price a buyer is willing to pay for the property on that day.) As you can see, there are pro’s and con’s to selling your home at Auction. Built in to the Auction experience is the Buyer’s expectation that they will get something at a low price. This may or may not happen. Promoting and advertising the Auction through Target Marketing increases the visibility of the property. A larger audience sees the property and more potential bidders attend the Auction, on-site or on-line. For the Seller, the speed of the Auction is a major advantage. The home will sell very quickly and the sale will be completed more rapidly than selling through the traditional methods. The waiting and worrying come to a quick conclusion. If you want to or need to sell in a set period of time, an auction may be your best option.
