mericans now spend nearly as much time using the Internet as they do watching TV. The Aventura Marketing Council’s first Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon of 2013 focused on the emergence of startup technology companies as powerful economic forces and how local businesses can best harness innovation for their benefit. The meeting was hosted by two “technologically advanced” startup companies: Genesis Media – a pioneering video advertising company focused on reinventing how consumers pay for content online; and DS Xpress - providing comprehensive computer services and helping entrepreneurs build business by establishing and optimizing an online presence. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman welcomed business and community leaders to Turnberry Isle, along with Genesis Media CEO Mark Yackanich, Genesis co-founder, Chairman Andrew Reis and partners Yoav Cohen and Josh Feuer, DS Xpress President Dimitry Shaposhnikov and partner Todd Lynn, who also operate 24/7 Online Printing - Aventura’s “one stop shop for all your design and printing needs.” Based in New York, Genesis Media is an early stage advertising technology darling. Breaking Up Breaking Down
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Some things just seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly or coffee and cream and breaking up and breaking down. If there was a list of emotionally painful events, breaking up would surely be on it. Breaking up can cause you to break down initially. Even if you are the one who instigated or initiated the break up, you can still break down yourself. You will feel a decrease in your self-esteem and a sense of failure and regret. You may also experience some self-doubt and question your ability to make good judgments. It is possible that breaking up may bring you a sense of relief. You may feel lucky to have escaped a toxic, dysfunctional relationship. Even so, you will still have to go through a period of grief, mourning and healing. The first step is to heal. That means a period of mental and emotional rest. Don’t allow yourself to think at all. Stop the
thought immediately by saying something like, “Not now.” There will be time to analyze the relationship later when it is not so fresh and painful. The only reason to analyze it is to prevent the same thing from happening again. You need to understand your vulnerabilities so that you choose wisely and differently next time. A break up creates introspection and sometimes guilt. People sometimes torture themselves trying to figure out what went wrong. This is a natural process. Ask yourself what your expectations were and what you hoped to experience in the relationship. Were your needs being met? Were you clear about what you wanted from the other person? Was the other person capable of meeting your needs? These questions will help you cope with your feelings of anger, shock, hurt, loss and disillusionment. They will help you sort out and share the responsibility for what went wrong. Once you understand, you can begin to move forward in a new direction. Knowledge is power and selfknowledge is very powerful.

Lincoln and Nevada Becoig a State
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Ask long-time Nevada residents why their state was admitted into the Union on October 31, 1864 and the probable answer would be because its silver and gold production “was needed to help finance the Civil War.” It’s a wonderful tale but not true. According to Nevada State Archivist Guy Rocha, “The myth of Nevada’s mineral wealth triggering statehood ranks as one of the most pervasive fictional stories in the annals of the Silver State.” Silver was discovered in the Nevada Comstock Lode in 1859. On March 2, 1861 the United States Congress established Nevada as Federal Territory and as part of the Union. In doing so, Congress ensured that Nevada’s riches (silver totaled some $400 million) would help finance the Union Civil War effort and not the Confederacy. The Federal Government “bought much of Nevada’s silver and gold bullion to support the strength of its currency.” Accordingly, Nevada’s gold and silver helping the Union
previously existed in 1861and was not a factor in Nevada’s becoming a state in 1864. The reasons for Nevada’s statehood “were strictly political and not economic.” By 1864, Lincoln, a Republican, also a practical politician, feared he might lose his re-election presidential campaign. He was in a three-way race against General George B. McClellan, a Democrat and General John C. Fremont, a Radical Republican. New states, with popular and electoral votes, were needed to ensure Lincoln’s reelection. In addition, among Lincoln’s proposed policies was the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. If Nevada was a new state, it could help elect Lincoln and also ratify the Amendment and “help in the passage of the landmark humanitarian legislation.” With Union sympathizers, Nevada’s entry into statehood was expedited. Nevada then sent the entire state constitution by telegraph for two days (by train it might not arrive on time), consisting of over 16,000 words (the longest transmission for 17 years) just two weeks before the election. Lincoln declared Nevada a state one week before the election. Freemont dropped out of the race, Lincoln carried Nevada in a relatively easy win over McClellan and thereafter, Nevada voted to ratify the 13th Amendment.

Medical experts from around the world gathered to discuss the latest breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis and treatment during the 11th Annual Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Symposium, hosted by The Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at Mount Sinai Medical Center. The symposium, held on January 19th and 20th at the Miami Beach Resort and Spa, provided a forum for new information and in-depth discussions about upcoming clinical trials and advances in research related to the clinical diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. This symposium is especially significant as current clinical research to find a cure for Alzheimer’s focuses on patients with MCI. People with MCI have more memory problems than others their age, but their symptoms are not as severe as the symptoms seen in people with Alzheimer’s disease. However, patients with MCI have a greater potential of developing Alzheimer’s. The earliest possible diagnosis can lead to pharmacological treatment and non-pharmacological interventions to slow the progression of the disease.
Twenty-five distinguished neurological experts from areas around the world – including Sweden, Australia and Netherlands, as well as U.S. cities such as Miami, Chicago, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Phoenix, Boston, Philadelphia, Berkeley, Atlanta and more – presented the latest information on the earliest stages of cognitive decline. In addition, the symposium featured keynote speeches by two distinguished experts. Todd Golde, M.D., PhD, director of the University of Florida’s Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Dis-
ease, delivered a presentation titled, “Solving the Dilemma of Treatment Versus Prevention Strategies for Alzheimer’s Disease.” Eric Reiman, M.D., executive director of the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, addressed “Launching the Era of Alzheimer’s Prevention Research”. This year’s event also featured the 2nd Annual Early Alzheimer’s Diagnostic and Treatment Workshop, which explored how newly developed diagnostic tests can be used successfully in the early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s. The symposium also included the 1st Annual MCI Public Education Forum, which gave members of the community the opportunity to interact in a panel discussion with medical experts. The MCI Symposium began in 2003 under the direction of Ranjan Duara, M.D., medical director of the Wien Center. Thanks to the generosity of Marilyn “Lynn” Girsh, the Wien Center will receive financial support to continue the symposium for the next 20 years. “I was very impressed with the work that Dr. Duara is doing at the Wien Center,” said Girsh. “And I especially appreciated the idea of an international symposium bringing researchers together to share their findings and discuss new ideas on treating Alzheimer’s. If there is any possibility of finding a cure, I would like to do what I can to help.” Unless new treatment options are found to prevent Alzheimer’s or delay its onset, it is projected that 13 million people in the U.S. will have the disease by 2050. Since the development of criteria for Alzheimer’s 25 years ago, major advances in understanding of the biology and early clinical features of the disease have led to improvement in clinical assessments. “Our goal is to continue hosting the symposium to help researchers gain a greater understanding of Alzheimer’s and eventually discover new treatment options that will delay, prevent or cure the disease,” Dr. Duara said.
