Friends of the Israel Defense Forces Aventura Commissioner Billy Joel and his wife, Sandra, were among an audience of over 1,200 people who attended the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces dinner at the Westin Diplomat Hotel featuring Evangelist Pastor John Hagee. “Pastor Hagee has a long history of supporting Israel, “ noted Comm. Joel, “and he spoke passionately about the situation in the Middle East and why we need to stand with Israel. He was, without a doubt, the most motivating and inspiring speaker Sandra and I have heard in many years.” Pastor Hagee is an American founder and senior pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, a non-denominational, charismatic church with over 19,000 active members. He is also President and CEO of John Hagee Ministries, which telecasts his national radio and television ministry carried in the U. S. on 160 TV stations, 50 radio stations and eight networks. “Delpo,” the affectionate nickname for tennis superstar Juan Martin del Potro, dominated the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships held February 18 through 27, winning the title by defeating Janko Tipsarevic in the singles final before a crowd of almost 4,700 fans. Delpo didn’t falter throughout the weeklong tournament, in spite of right wrist surgery, winning every set of the tournament by varying his incredibly strong forehand with flat drives and short angles. With this win, he rose to #85 in the world, three weeks after he was #484, earning 250 ranking points, $76,500 and a Porsche Carrera 911 for winning this tournament. Ivan Baron, Tournament Chairman, said, “This year’s Championships set an attendance record with almost 64,000 fans over the 10-day tournament. And we’re expecting an even larger crowd for next year’s event, the world’s only combined
10-day ATP Champions Tour and ATP World Tour Event, to be held Feb. 24 – March 4, 2012.” Community and charity were a strong component, as always, in this year’s event, featuring a Pro-Am tournament that benefited the Pathfinders Scholarship Fund & Tico Torres Children’s Foundation. Fort Lauderdale CBRE real estate broker Scott Allen won the Pro-Am, after fighting through an elbow injury and sleepless nights with the birth of his first child, Jake Peter Allen. Allen’s wife Allison, onemonth old baby Jake, mother Jane Nader and mother-in-law Elaine Adler were there to cheer him on. Dennis Collins, executive with Lincoln Financial Media radio stations, also participated in the Pro-Am. Turning houses into homes with Stuart Geller of Geller Design Group
BY LYNN CARROLL
LC: Now that the housing market is p i c k i n g u p a g a i n , i s i n t e r i o r design in g re a t e r d e m a n d ? SG: I see several trends at this time. Some people are trading up to larger spaces. I’m being commissioned for some newer construction, too, because that is starting to move. In some cases, people bought apartments three years, but only now have the confidence in the economy to start moving forward. But there are still a lot of renovations taking place due to the fact that many people are choosing not to move.
STUART GELLER
L C : W h a t k i n d o f r e n o v a t i o n s a r e peo ple looking for? SG: It’s all about wanting their homes to function. They’ve realized as they’ve cut back on dining out that their kitchens are outdated, and they want to update their appliances and gadgets. There’s a lot of focus on personal spaces; both men and women are very interested in home offices and computer spaces.
PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE Technology upgrades in general are popular. Technology has made such great strides over the last 10-15 years that televisions and entertainment systems are very outdated. We’ve joined forces with a company that revamps entertainment and electrical systems. And as people age, comfort is becoming paramount. Seating that was comfortable 10 years ago may not be appropriate now. Clients are becoming more responsible about looking ahead to the future and planning for their old age. They have decided that they would prefer to make their homes more livable during that time rather than going to a nursing home. That means adding grab bars in the bathroom and widening doors to accommodate a wheelchair. L C : This sounds like work for p r i m a ry r esidences rather t h a n s e c o n d a ry or vacation homes. SG: Well, a lot of people are giving up that double-home lifestyle, and their secondary home has become primary. I think the climate change that has affected the
Ocean Prime hosts launch campaign for Bnai Zion Foundation’s Allies for Ahava BY LYNN CARROLL
The Allies for Ahava group of the Southeast Region of Bnai Zion recently launched a fundraising campaign with a networking event at Ocean Prime Restaurant in Aventura Mall. The campaign’s mission is to fund construction of therapy facilities at Ahava Village for Children and Youth in Kiryat Bialik, Israel. The goal for this event was to bring our group together, create awareness for the Allies for Ahava and give everyone an opportunity to learn more about the Ahava Village, says Eileen Glastein, director of the Southeast Region for the Bnai Zion Foundation. “Many young professionals from all areas of business came out to celebrate with us,” she says. “The ambience at Ocean Prime put everyone in the mood for socializing. Everyone had fun getting to know one another, and we expanded the number of delegates involved in this project. So the evening was an enormous success.” Featured speaker for the gathering was Chen Tal. “Mr. Tal is one of our local Israeli businessmen who is quite familiar with Ahava Village,” Glastein says. “In fact, Chen donated several horses for the children there to take care of and ride. He was a very interesting speaker.” Ahava Village is designed to help children over-

come the stresses of severely dysfunctional backgrounds by offering apartment-style residences and a variety of activities and therapies. Glastein says the overall goal of Allies for Ahava is to enrich the lives of the children there. “We simply want those children to succeed despite the many challenges life has thrown them,” she says. Glastein says each Allies for Ahava delegate will sponsor events to achieve fundraising goals. “This campaign is a blessing for the children and an opportunity of a lifetime for the delegates,” she says. Information on Allies for Ahava can be found at www.bnaizion.org/allies or Allies for Ahava on Facebook.
Northeast has made more people choose to make their primary home in South Florida. L C : H o w h a v e t h e s e t re n d s a f f e c t e d y o u r business? SG: All these things are making the design process more meaningful to me. It’s about getting back to basics and making a difference rather than just designing a stunning home. I’m currently redoing an apartment I first did many years ago that was recently sold in an estate sale. It’s kind of a wonderful thing for me to take a look at Vintage Geller and see that the original furnishings lasted for the lifetime of the original owners, and now just need some refurbishing. It goes back to my old motto – where the logic of design is concerned, what’s cheap is expensive and what’s expensive is cheap.

A Compatibility Test
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Compatibility is an important ingredient in every relationship. It is a measure of how well- matched and how well-suited you are to each other. It stands to reason that the more similar your views , thoughts and feelings are, the happier you will be together. Here is a test, a hypothetical situation for couples to think about. Your response is one small indication of your compatibility. You are leaving a parking lot. There is a rather large truck blocking the exit closest to you. There is not much room for the truck to move. You have plenty of room to back up and go out one of the other exits. What do you do? Do you blow your horn repeatedly for the truck to move? Do you lean on the horn? Do you start to get angry and begin to shout or even curse? Do you get so impatient and frustrated that you get
out of the car and go over and confront the driver? If you do get out of your car and go over, do you ask the driver politely to move a little or do you start yelling negative, disparaging things? Do you back up and go out the other exit? How you answer this question and others like it will give you some insight into the compatibility of your relationship, your philosophy of life and your value system and the value system of your partner. It is not important which behavior is better or more correct. It is important whether or not you both agree on the course of action. If the couple does not see eye to eye on how to handle a certain situation it will cause disagreements and hard feelings and be discordant. If couples are incompatible they are unsuited to each other and they are unable to live together in tranquility and joy. Relationships thrive when they are harmonious. They blossom when couples are in agreement about the important things in life. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Obama tells Gadafi to go
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS President Barack Obama recently called for Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi to step down and leave because of his use of military force against the peaceful protesters. Obama said his doctrine was “no violence against citizens” and “we stand for freedom and democracy.” Let us look at our history. In the Spring and Summer of 1932, some 17,0000 World War I veterans and their families, descended on Washington to lobby for immediate payment of the bonus money (certificates) awarded them by Congress in 1924 although not due until 1945. Many of the veterans had been out of work since the beginning of the Great Depression and needed the bonus money for family survival. The Bonus Army or Bonus Marchers, as they came to be called, pitched camp (shacks) called Hooverville near the capital. According to historian William A. DeGregorio, “When Congress voted against payment of the bonus money
to the veterans, some demonstrators drifted away, but thousands remained in peaceful protest, “a squalid reminder of the Depression and its effect on those who had risked their lives for their country.” On July 28, the U.S. Attorney General ordered the police to remove the Bonus Army from their camp. Washington police met with resistance from several veterans, shots were fired and two veterans died. President Hoover immediately ordered the army to evict the Bonus Army from Washington. General Douglas MacArthur, aided by Major Dwight Eisenhower and Major George Patton, lead four cavalry troops with drawn sabers, an infantry column with fixed bayonets and tear gas bombs, and six tanks against the ragged band of veterans and their families.” Casualties among the Bonus Marchers included four killed, including an infant, Bernard Myers, who died from tear gas inhalation and 1,017 injured, including a small boy who was bayoneted in the leg. In short order, the Bonus Army with their wives and children were driven out by military force, their shelters and belongings burned. Hoover’s use of armed military force “to defeat the Bonus Army drew widespread criticism and reinforced the image of a heartless president insensitive to the suffering of the Depression’s victims.”

Barker Animation, Fine Art and Sculptures hosts ‘animated’ networking event Continued from page 1 –––––––––––––––––––– The gallery opened last November with a gala ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by owners Herb and Gloria Barker, who graciously donated 300 Yankee Pinstripe Number 5 pins to the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Over the past several years, the Barkers have bestowed over $1.3 million in art to hospitals in keeping with their commitment to “healing through art” – a concept they will be extending to seniors in cooperation with Aventura Hospital and Medical Center. While partaking of fabulous food catered by the neighboring BRIO Tuscan Grille, AMC members greeted by gallery director Carey Marchand were impressed to learn the Barkers founded the largest animation and entertainment art gallery in the world in Cheshire, Connecticut – and Herb Barker was chosen by Animation Art Magazine as “One of the top ten most influential people in animation in America.” The Barkers also own and operate a Fine Art & Sculpture Division; Barker Specialty for promotional products and premium merchandise; The Barker Character, Comic and Cartoon Museum in Connecticut, exhibiting over 80,000 items; Comic Strip Art Publishers Co.; and Barker Publishing Co., the world’s largest publisher of advertising and entertainment art. Fans of Mickey and Minnie especially enjoyed a special Barker exhibit featuring the artwork of celebrated artist Mike Kupka; and looked forward to meeting Disney fine artist Tim Rogerson who painted live at Barker March 4-6 to showcase his new collection of originals, limited editions and personal commissions. Appreciating the beauty and wonder of animation art, a collage of colleagues from diverse businesses noted all applicable artwork comes with a studio certificate of authenticity directly from production studios. Barker is an authorized and preferred gallery for Disney, Warner Brothers, Hanna-Barbera, Museum Editions Limited, 20th Century Fox, Sunday Funnies, Linda Jones Enterprises, Clampett Studio Collections, Will Vinton Studios, MGM, Universal, Dic Entertainment, Lucasfilm Ltd., Oggetti, S2 Art Group, Chase Art Group, PAWS Inc., King Features, ACME Archives and Collector’s Editions. Star associates also planned to join “The Star Club” – Barker’s special membership program offering great benefits including insider information on new releases; advance notice on all special events and guest appearances; exclusive Star Club member promotions; Star Club discounts; and the Barker family personal guarantee: “You will never pay more at a Barker Animation Art Gallery. We will match any other legitimate gallery’s price on any piece of art. The fact is, you will probably pay less because of our volume and Star Club discount.” Before it was time to say, “That’s all folks!” Christina Sparling of EmbroidMe won a limited edition artwork titled “Working Out” from the academy award winning Will Vinton Studios, published by Barker Animation Art Gallery - and everyone planned to come back soon to see new art constantly being purchased by Barker, bringing customers the best selection possible from artists including Toby Bluth, Romero Britto, Tricia Buchanan-Benson, James Coleman, Tom Everhart, Charles Fazzino, Leonard Filgate, Chuck Jones, Bill Melendez, Markus Pierson, Dr. Seuss, Jim Shore, Iwao Takamoto, Myron Waldman, Todd Warner, David Willardson and many more.

Off to the Market!
Jeannie Roberts ENTERTAINMENT Greenies everywhere, rejoice! Why? Because buying local products and organic produce just got easier thanks to The Village at Gulfstream Park’s Green Market series taking place every Wednesday evening from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. in Champions Plaza. Spearheaded by Claire Tomlin from The Market Company, Tomlin is touted for helping South Floridians get back to their roots by creating farmer’s markets on Miami Beach, Key Largo, Deerfield Beach, Aventura and now, Hallandale Beach! Tomlin has been organizing green markets since ‘96 and explains, “Green markets sell products like in a farmer’s market; however, here in South Florida most farmers sell to big corporations and don’t go to markets personally. We have been fortunate enough to get to know some vendors who actually go to farms and gather product directly from the farm in order to bring them fresh to market.” And it’s good to be green. At The Village at Gulfstream Park’s Green Market, guests can expect fresh produce — usually picked the day of the market or the day
before. Tomlin says, “At the local grocery, produce has been picked, stored, delivered to a distribution center, stored, delivered to the grocery, stored and then put on the shelf. I venture to guess the produce is already one week old when the consumer gets it.” What else can Green Market goers anticipate? A vast assortment of unique offerings, such as conventional and organic produce, bamboo plants, bonsai, handmade candles and soaps, dog treats, local honey, handmade soaps, orchids, cut flowers, fresh-baked goods, artisan items and live music! Rain or shine, The Village at Gulfstream Park’s Green Market is in full bloom every Wednesday.

map lights and an accessory power socket; • Rear View Camera is now standard with the HSE; • Halogen headlights on the HSE Package now include LED Signature Lighting; • Climate Comfort Package is now a standalone option on the LR4 base model and HSE, and included in HSE LUX; • Premium Audio Upgrade is available on HSE Package; • Black Lacquer finish is a new interior trim option, and • New Vision Assist Package for HSE and HSE LUX includes xenon HID headlights (HSE only, already standard on HSE LUX); Adaptive Front Lighting System (swiveling headlights); Automatic High Beam Assist (AHBA) and a Surround Camera System; power-folding mirrors; Trailer Assist and Trailer Hitch Assist. power to all four wheels through an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with shift-on-the-move capability. Engineered for rugged off-road travel, the LR V-8 has a deep, pressure die-cast oil pan to accommodate the extreme tilting angles the LR4 can negotiate. Belt drives are waterproofed, as are the alternator, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump and starter motor. On the inside, the LR4 has a soft, elegant interior that combines smooth, flowing surfaces with easy-to-use controls. The console is inclined towards the driver, and all models feature a steering wheel with switches to access driver infor-
mation and operate the audio system, cruise control and optional steering wheel heating. Leather seating, dual-zone automatic climate control and a power tilt-and-slide sunroof are among the LR4’s standard amenities. Do You See In 3-D BY DR. STEVEN WIGDOR
MThe desire to see pictures and movies in 3-D is certainly not new. The original stereoscopic viewer that held two slightly different pictures was invented in 1844, and by 1915 the first 3-D movie was introduced. The ability to see in 3-D is simple. Each eye just needs to see a slightly different image, in the very same way that the distance between our eyes allows us to see things from two slightly different angles. Early 3-D technology relied on red and green anaglyph glasses. Unfortunately everything had a red and green color to it, and the quality of the 3-D effect was not very impressive. Over the next decades, various polarized lens systems were developed which provided some improvements. Polarized lenses allow light to go through them in only one direction, so by placing the each lens at a different angle, each eye can be made to see a different image. The difficulty in producing and showing the movies still limited acceptance. More recently, enhanced systems to produce and project movies, coupled with better quality polarized glasses created a resurgence in 3D popularity. Increased profits from 3-D movies is certainly giving Hollywood an incentive to keep these graphically enhanced productions in front of our face. Passive polarized technology, currently used in movie theaters, now has to share the spotlight with Active systems that allow us to enjoy 3-D television in the comforts of our own home. Televisions normally refresh the picture 60 to 120
times a second. Television that allow 3-D viewing refresh the screen 240 times a second, 120 times for each eye. The glasses required for home viewing are LCD (liquid crystal display) shutter glasses, that open and close each eye’s view in synchronization with the television thus allowing separate images to be seen. Unfortunately the glasses are expensive and have to be purchased for the brand of television you are watching. The good news is that there will continue to be an influx of 3-D television available as the popularity continues to increase. ESPN already broadcasts live 3-D basketball, football, and other sporting events through your current cable / satellite provider (see schedule http://espn.go.com/3d/). Watching in 3-D can enhance your experience but for many people who can’t use both eyes together, the experience will never be appreciated. It’s also possible to feel eyestrain while watching in 3-D, as the eyes are forced to focus and converge differently than under normal seeing situations. With time, research and newer technologies will continue to make 3-D viewing a more comfortable visual experience. In the meantime, having a complete eye health and vision exam can help diagnose vision and muscle imbalances that can interfere with not only 3-D vision, but with everyday visual comfort. Remember, everyone has hindsight — protect your eyesight! Mardi Gras Casino Names New Executive Chef BY DONNA DECONNA
Mardi Gras Casino is proud to have snagged new Executive Chef, Ardasher “Alex” Asadullaev, to bring his culinary creativity to menus throughout the seven (7) restaurants in the casino. Having fourteen years of experience, Chef Alex’s previous experience included working for Chase Restaurant at Gulfstream Park and the Court at Palm Aire. Chef Alex was employed as a Chef Saucier at Mardi Gras Casino at the time he applied for the Executive Chef position. When Mardi Gras Casino decided to hire a new Executive Chef they went on a national search and reviewed hundreds of resumes from qualified applicants from around the country. To spice things up a bit, Mardi Gras’ Food & Beverage Director, Sallyanne Kelly, decided to include a twist to the search; a tasting contest. The highest qualified applicants were invited to come to the Casino and in style with the highly rated TV Show “Top Chef” offered a challenge; the applicants were to present a tasting of 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and dessert was optional. There were some amazingly good dishes but when the votes were tallied, Chef

How can I justify this gadget for business? Wilson Alvarez GADGETS & TECHNOLOGY When I first saw the iPod nano, I wanted it, just because it was small, cute, whatever you want to call it. I already have a 40gb iPod and a 64gb iPad, so why in the world would I need another gadget. My justification was, it’s my Christmas gift and it’s also a watch, and an FM radio (as if I needed another watch or listen to radio). Gadgets, gadgets, gadgets! What is it about gadgets that makes people always crave them? Is it that we didn’t have enough toys when we grew up? Perhaps that’s my case. Good economy, bad economy, we all love gadgets. As I purchased the small device, I also got the wristband accessory, which turns it into a watch. This particular iPod has a
watch app, which is pretty neat. And, yes, I also got it with a 16 gb drive so that I can listen to music and also audio books. Oh, yes, that was another justification. I wanted to read the bible in a year, so I also purchased the bible in audio format. By the way, it’s a totally different experience listening to an audio book vs. reading it. Then, me being the techy guy that I am, I said, YES! Another justification! I can also backup my important documents to this device! After all, it has a 16 gb drive. So now I have a watch, backup device, radio, ipod and a pedometer. How can we forget the pedometer? It interfaces with the Nike Sport Kit, which gives you all of the important stats for your workout. So let’s see, if you are a work out junkie, like listening to FM radio, enjoy podcasts, audio books, music, video and would like to backup your data and have it with you at all times, then you may want to get a nano (I am trying my hardest to justify this device). The device comes with headphones and the USB cable. It is designed to clip to anything, like your sleeve, collar, pocket, belt, etc.

Women’s History Month BY REP. DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ
On March 9th people around the world marked the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. This day, which falls during National Women’s History Month, is marked worldwide with conferences, rallies, parties, and a wealth of events that recognizes the indelible contributions that women have made worldwide. It’s incredible to note the difference a century can make. 100 years ago, women in the United States, and many other countries, could not even vote. They could not attend many universities and were severely limited in employment options. Now, women can not only vote, but have held Cabinet positions, achieved momentous feats in science, law, and medicine, and have even served as presidents and prime ministers in nations around the world. Yet for all that there is to celebrate, this month is also a time to reflect on where we need to go from here. As the saying goes, a woman’s work is never done. And unfortunately, there is plenty left to do. Today, in America, women make only 75 cents, on average, for every dollar earned by their male counterparts- even when education and experienced are taken into account. Women represent 57 percent of undergraduate students, a number which is steadily climbing, but earn only 20 percent of bachelor’s degrees in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. And while the number of women running for political office has been increasing, women still only represent 17 percent of Congress and hold only six Governorships. This is not a time to get comfortable. This is a time to get moving. We have so much left to accomplish before we can truly say that we have achieved equality, and the obstacles facing women are at once both subtle and overt. Whether it is degrading remarks made in the workplace, abusive relationships at home, or deserved promotions that don’t materialize women still face far too many impediments. This year, the theme of National Women History Month is “Our History is Our Strength”. We have come a long, long way, and few women would disagree that we are better off now than we were a decade or a century ago. But there is no denying that women’s history is full of darkness—back alley abortions, diminished legal rights, and narrow access to education.
That’s why I’m so troubled at what appears to be a deliberate, extreme legislative agenda against women in the House of Representatives. We have seen the House Republican Leadership introduce legislation that would raise taxes on individuals and small businesses that purchase health insurance that includes comprehensive reproductive health coverage. We have seen attempts to redefine ‘rape’, by including only cases where a woman was “forcibly” assaulted, which would not include, for example, date rape or instances where a woman was otherwise unable to consent. I believe that this in and of itself is a violent act against women. And most recently, we have seen proposed funding cuts that would harm women, children, and families across the board. H.R. 1, the Republican bill to fund the federal government for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2011, would, among others, cut: • $747 million from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), which provides vital nutrition and counseling to 9.6 million low-income women and children monthly; • $327 million—ALL funding—for Title X family planning programs, which provide contraceptives, cancer screenings, and STI tests to millions of women and men nationwide; • $50 million from Maternal and Child Health grants, which provide prenatal and preventive care to more than 2.5 million women and 31 million children yearly; • $39 million from Head Start and Child Care programs, which will cause 368,000 children to lose access to early education programs; • and millions of dollars from the Social Security Administration, which women rely on, at higher rates than men, for employment services, meals, and housing. Whether carrying a child or in their sunset years, women of all ages would be adversely affected by these reckless cuts. I am committed to reducing the deficit, creating jobs and getting our economy turned around. But this hole was not dug by women and children, and we cannot climb out of it on their backs. Throughout the remainder of National Women’s History Month, I would hope that my colleagues across the aisle will rethink their dangerous proposals. But, if they won’t then women need to help them rethink by doing everything we can to let the Republican House majority know that women refuse to go backward. As history has shown us, a nation is at its best when its women are succeeding.

Ready for networking success? BY PAT MORGAN
What is networking? We hear a lot about it, but what exactly is it? Simply put, it’s getting to know people. We are naturally networking all the time. We talk with people at the grocery store, the gym, on the golf course, at parties and most everywhere we go. Networking for business is more strategic, but the same idea – getting to know people and building relationships. We typically think of networking in reference to events, like those hosted by chambers of commerce and professional organizations, which are designed for making contacts and growing your business. Networking at events like these can be powerful for business development and, when done professionally, is extremely profitable and effective. When I moved to Miami 10 years ago and was starting my business, I decided to make networking a part of my marketing strategy. I attended events and joined organizations where I could learn about
local companies, get to know people and become involved in the community. I saw it as an opportunity to become known, to differentiate myself and to cement my brand in a personal way. In the process, I was able to meet people and attract opportunities I otherwise would have missed. At one of my first events, I met Marti Mang, a senior vice president with TotalBank. We made an instant connection when I shared that I had recently moved from her home state of Colorado. From that initial meeting, we have not only done business together as clients and referral partners, but have also become good friends and shared many experiences; like going to the Orange Bowl, golfing and celebrating special occasions. That’s the power of networking! Many people struggle to network effectively. With focus and a few new ideas, you can become a successful networker and have fun in the process!
Try these tips: • Have a plan. Make networking a part of your marketing plan and target events and activities that are a fit. • Introduce yourself confidently. Develop a brief introduction that clearly states what you do. Practice until you can say it easily and effortlessly. • Show interest in others. Be genuinely curious about them and their interests. Look to connect rather than impress. • Ask for referrals. Let people know who you are looking to meet and ask for their help with referrals. • Be a resource to others. Connect people with resources that are helpful and relevant. Become known as the “go to” person for connections. • Say “hello” first. Take the initiative to introduce yourself instead of waiting for the other person. Be friendly and put others at ease. • Always have plenty of business cards. Replenish your business cards regularly and keep them readily accessible. • Expand your network. Continue to add new contacts to your
database so you can be a valuable resource for others and share more referrals. • Follow up promptly on leads. The fortune is in the follow-up. Let people know you will be in contact after an event so they expect to hear from you. Prompt follow up will show you are reliable. • Become a lifelong networker. Be a connector and create win-win situations. Strong networks built upon a foundation of trust will serve you for a lifetime. Are you ready to network? If you want to make a strong start with networking, or take your skills to the next level, let’s make it happen. Together we will chart the course to success in reaching your goals. Lowe Art Museum exhibitions and programs are sponsored in part by The State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs, The Florida Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts, with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
On Thursday, March 31, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., I am asking each one of you reading this to go to any public school close to you, and show your support for public education by WALKING IN to a school. On this day, United Teachers of Dade, in cooperation with community organizations, parents, and many public sector employees including nurses, firefighters, police, transit workers and others will come out to our public schools to protect our children and the schools that serve them. We need you to join us. Thousands of citizens must stand up against the cuts to education funding that will leave children without the education they need for their future. Last year, two brave mothers staged a hunger strike because of the cuts their children faced in critical education programming. Unions often come under media fire for supposedly planning workplace walk outs, which we do not condone in any way. Instead, we want our entire community to stand with us as we WALK IN to schools to stand up for Public Education. Right now is a critical time. Our schools, our teachers and support
staff, and our children are in danger from legislation that cuts funding to our classrooms and places money in the hands of profiteers. It is urgent that we act together to demonstrate public outrage at what is occurring in Tallahassee. The Florida legislature is withdrawing billions of dollars of funding from public education and weakening the economic power of working Floridians. They are wasting money on programs known to be failures such as pay for performance models they are currently legislating. For example: • $215 million reduction to Miami-Dade Public Schools funding alone. • No funding provided to districts for a pay-for-performance model. • $2 billion wasted on creating more tests, not for the benefit of students. • Children placed in larger classes. • Children placed in virtual classes without a classroom teacher or interaction with other students. • Experienced and successful teachers fired for no reason at end of year. The Governor of Florida and other states have said they can’t afford to educate America’s children. How is it that the most prosperous, democratic country in the world would fail to educate her children? How dare this governor and legislators say they will not pay for public education! Walk in with us to our public schools on 3-31-11 to show our governor and lawmakers that the people will not tolerate these threats to our right to a public education system. The United Teachers of Dade represents 32,000 teachers and school support personnel in MDCPS. The union is committed to being a leader in creating public school reform, fostering a quality public education for all students and elevating the professional status of teachers, paraprofessionals, office employees, and all school support personnel.

It seems like the hot topic in the media today is belly fat and how to combat this disgusting belt-line ooze. The conventional myth of doing 200 crunches a day is a waste of time and ab development contraptions are a waste of money, but seem to be in high demand. Meanwhile, conventional wisdom from trainers stating you can eliminate said belly bulge by doing resistance training, cardiovascular exercise and a lifestyle nutrition plan seems to be losing out to quick fix surgeries, unhealthy weight loss clinic programs and short cut yo-yo diets. So how do we separate the myth from the fact to fight the fat and keep it off for a lifetime? It ultimately starts with the essential foundations of weight loss. There are three main components which, are as previously stated, resistance training, cardiovascular exercise and a lifestyle nutrition plan. Resistance training increases lean muscle mass, which in turn enhances your metabolism. Since muscle is metabolically active, when you have more lean muscle mass on your body you will burn more calories throughout the entire day, even when you aren’t exercising. Your cardiovascular exercise will consume calories and fat, further aiding in your belly fat shrinkage. Then you add a balanced lifestyle nutrition plan (notice I didn’t say diet) that is just slightly less than the calories you burn throughout the day. This nutrition plan is the main component in this synergistic formula to combat the fat. Now, let’s understand more about belly fat storage. Did you know our stress hormone cortisol is the major culprit for keeping our insulin and blood sugar levels high? According to Dr. Pamela Peeke, once these levels are high, our body is more likely to store body fat in the belly
area due to the cortisol and insulin receptors being numerous in the fat cells of the belly. Cortisol also sends our body into a hunger craze. This is evident in stressful situations, triggering emotional eating problems in people. Therefore, if we are overeating and cortisol is present, our body packs the pounds on our gut. With a solid foundation and a clear understanding of why belly fat is stored where it is, you can then add in other tricks that will actually start to target the belly fat: • Regular exercise, relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation and stressfree days off will help you cope with stress and allow your cortisol levels to return to normal. • According to Dr. Oz, adding in Omega-3 fatty acids can help incinerate stress fat. Omega’s are fat burning fats and can be found in oily fish (salmon, trout, and tuna). • Dr. Oz’s other favorite cortisol killer is Vitamin C. He says one should consume up to 1200mgs per day because the body’s need for Vitamin C during stress can be increased up to tenfold. • Another long time trick I’ve used with clients is supplementing with Carnitine. Carnitine is actually used by the body to convert fat into metabolic energy. It is recommended to consume 100gs a day. So, it’s time to ditch the idea that spot reducing fat through contraptions and situps will slim the waist line. If you want a truly firm stomach that is beach ready, then hit the resistance training, jump into a cardiovascular program and eat following a healthy nutrition plan. Once that is established, add in the tips mentioned above and take the belly fat burn to the next level. Don’t be surprised when your belly stops sagging over your pants and your clothes start falling off of your hips.
