The Past
Dan Palmer ASSOCIATE EDITOR
Wanderings & Ponderings It was a 10 sentence obituary. She had been found in her car in a canal. She’d been missing about a month and no one even knew she was missing. Logic to that because most of her contemporaries were long gone and if they were still alive probably skeletons of what she and her generation had become. She went back to the days of the start of L.S.D. and its guru Timothy Leary. She in fact was one of his early students in sending out the word on this so called mind opening drug. As a top editor of a book publishing firm she also spent long lunches with writers that were Martini heavy. Didn’t take her long to end up out of the loop and wondering how that could happen to someone so talented in what she did.
For some reason, could have been her monthly disappearance from work. Could have been her monthly disappearance from her work desk or as she put it, it was time to move on. Came south with a job offer from a slightly less prestigious publisher where she was able to do pretty well since they liked what she did when she was sober and not drugged out. She was with them for maybe 10 years, becoming more and more a heavy smoking drunk. One time while driving through one of the small towns nearby, she was stopped, ordered out of her car and fell flat on her face on the road. She wanted to sue the local cops because they shouldn’t have arrested her since they should have noted that she wasn’t feeling so good even though her breathe was way over the legal limit. She was sure it never would have happened up north. Got a six month license suspension. I lost touch with her or she stopped coming by when I refused to give her a drink for the road.

DASH students enjoy Aventura Mall educational tour hosted by Jacqueline Fletcher, Director of Turnberry for the Arts (center, back row)
High school students from the Design and Architecture High School (DASH), who are members of the Women of Tomorrow Mentor and Scholarship program, recently were treated to a private educational tour of Aventura Mall and Nordstrom Aventura. Jacqueline Fletcher, Director of Turnberry for the Arts, highlighted the world-class art collection installed throughout Aventura Mall, including pieces by famed artists Jaume Plensa, Julian Opie, Louise Bourgeois, and more. Fletcher explained to the students why each piece was chosen for Aventura Mall, underscoring the power of art and its impact on visitors to the shopping center. The students are in a high school program at DASH (A Miami-Dade public magnet school for talented students) that is focused on the
arts, fashion, industrial design and architecture. In addition to Aventura Mall’s art program, Fletcher also commented to the students on the shopping center’s many design elements, including architectural concepts, store groupings, color choices and store logos. At Nordstrom, the students learned firsthand about visual merchandising from Jerelle Thorne during a tour organized by Nordstrom Personal Stylist Carol Christmas. Adelsa Simon, the DASH liaison for Dash to Women of Tomorrow, noted: “Our students had an extraordinary opportunity to see the breadth of opportunity and professions that stand behind a successful mall.” WOT DASH mentors, Bonnie Cypen Epstein and Elsie Howard, echoed Ms. Simon’s comments. “We are so grateful to Aventura Mall, Nordstrom and the Women of Tomorrow team for giving our girls a day to remember and build on,” Epstein said. Extinguishing Behavior
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING If you extinguish something you cause it to die out. You do away with it. You annihilate it. You prevent it from continuing or being repeated. Extinguishing behavior is a technique used to remove or eliminate undesirable behaviors, conditions or situations. This can be a good thing. However, sometimes, out of ignorance, people eliminate certain positive behaviors that should be encouraged. It is important to be aware of what you are doing so that you do not eliminate the positive actions by mistake. If the fuss you create about something is strong enough and upsetting enough the other person will vow never to do it again. If you are consistently critical and you find fault, your relationships will be dominated by avoidance behavior. Your partner, family, friends and associates will alter their behavior to avoid your negative remarks and actions. To the other person your reactions can feel unfathomable, confusing and discouraging.
As a result they simply stop doing what they would normally do. You have effectively annihilated it A perfect example of this is when you react in a negative way or you do not react at all when you receive a gift or a compliment. Eventually, you will extinguish that behavior in others. It is difficult to understand why certain people are like this. Perhaps, they have certain beliefs about themselves and certain beliefs about what is appropriate behavior in others. Perhaps, they have a strong need to control everything and impose their will and standards on others. Perhaps everything is threatening to them and they need to protect themselves and their comfort level. Every situation has to go the way they want. Perhaps they do not feel worthy of receiving anything nice. Ironically, this is not a win-win situation for either party. They are both deprived of the positive feelings involved in life’s interactions. You can avoid extinguishing positive behavior in others by developing selfawareness. Pay attention to what you are doing. Hold up a mental mirror and observe your actions and reactions. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212 308-0309.

Camps for sick children wins Stivelman support Two summer camps that give 340 very sick children and teens a life-affirming vacation from disease and disability have won the heart of entrepreneur, businessman, and philanthropist Claudio Stivelman. Camp Simcha and Camp Simcha Special, projects of Chai Lifeline, the international children’s health support network, are designed to meet the medical and social needs of seriously ill children and teens. Each camp offers two, two-week sessions that combine the activities and environment of overnight camps for healthy children with rigorous medical supervision that maintains the health and safety of children with serious medical conditions. Children who come to Camp Simcha have
spent months or years in treatment for cancer or other lifethreatening illnesses. The campers who attend Camp Simcha Special have serious chronic illnesses or disabilities. Many arrive in wheelchairs, oxygen in tow, with no hair or energy, but everything changes when they come through the gates and enter the magnificent, 125-acre Catskill Mountain campground. ‘Aventura Oscars’
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY The Oscar awards have already been presented to the stars – but Avemtira has its own version of nominated blockbusters that just might be even more “award-worthy”… The Kids Are All Right: Kids attending the Aventura City of Excellence School are getting the right kind of education – and a lot of right answers on FCAT tests – evidenced by the fact that the school is renowned for receiving “A” grades! The Social Network: With all the parks in Aventura, the city is becoming such a social hub, there are always great opportunities for social networking and getting lots of new friend requests – especially since park hours have just been extended! Winter’s Bone: While others chilled to the bone may still be trying to dig out of all the snow, here in Aventura the only ice you’ll
see is in tropical drinks lucky residents and visitors are enjoying while soaking up the sun by the pool. So make no bones about it – Aventura deserves an award just for having the best weather in winter – and yearround! 127 Hours: If you tried to count all the hours members of the City Commission and city staff devote to making sure residents enjoy the highest quality life, it would add up to way more than 127 hours…good thing they don’t ask for overtime! Inception: Since the inception of Aventura in 1995, the city has been experiencing a plethora of new and exciting things like the grand opening of the new Aventura Arts & Cultural Center - and Nordstrom Rack... Thank goodness it’s all not just an amazing dream! And so, thanks to The Fighter instinct and True Grit of civic activists who pushed for incorporation, Aventura has evolved from a Black Swan into the City of Excellence featuring amenities more fun than even Toy Story 3 and fit for The King’s Speech all about the best combination of luxury and lifestyle!

networks. “We’re helping our customers take advantage of the numerous capabilities on their wireless devices,” he said. “Our continued investment and efforts are resulting in a stronger, better performing mobile broadband experience.” Getting even “better-faster-every day” AT&T’s wireless network plans in Miami and Fort Lauderdale will now offer 4G speeds plus enable customers to talk and surf at the same time. AT&T also provides access to voice service in more than 220 countries and data service in more than 200 countries; operates the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network with more than 24,000 hotspots in the U.S.; and was recently named as having the “Best Mobile Coverage in the World” by Business Traveler magazine. In keeping with AT&T’s “keeping people connected” mission, Carlos Blanco, vice president and general manager, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets for South Florida, noted, “Consumers who want the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network and the best selection of wireless devices will go with AT&T. We’re working hard to provide our customers with best-in-class service, and our ongoing investment in the local wireless network is one way to accomplish this.” Johnson, a retired AT&T leader now serving as CEO/President of the Greater Miami Chamber emphasized, “We have more small businesses in Miami-Dade than almost any other county in America so it’s the small business engines that really make connectivity happen by investing in your business directly; investing in your community through not-for-profits; and memberships in business organizations
like the AMC, the Greater Miami Chamber and The Beacon Council.” Nero’s message about the mission of The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade’s official economic development partnership dedicated to recruiting new to market businesses and helping local business expand, also rang true. “People are looking for connectivity which is why continued investment in the infrastructure of our two economic engines, the airport and seaport, are very important and will pay off for years to come,” Nero said. “The One Community One Goal initiative is making a strong comeback to identify industries best suited for optimal growth and focus on education. To be successful in recruiting, investing in education has to be ‘job one.’” Criser noted, “AT&T has launched a program with Junior Achievement called ‘Aspire’ offering job-shadowing events for students who can still be convinced to stay in school and finish with at least a high school degree. Statistics tell us that when a child completes high school, it’s worth about $250,000 of lifetime earnings for that individual…think about how that contributes to economic power for the community. It was once said, ‘Young people are only 25 percent of the population but they’re 100 percent of your future.’” Before it was time to turn phones back on, everyone was dialed into this text-worthy message: “There is no company that is investing more in making our place a better place to live, work and play than what AT&T is doing for all of us in South Florida.”

Where Have the Good Watermelons Gone? Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer EAT THIS... DRINK THAT
It is March, and technically, it is still the winter. But since we live in Florida, and the weather is almost always incredible, I personally, tend to forget, which brings me right into the crux of my story: Watermelon. I know it is at its best in the summer (since it is a summer fruit), but quite frankly, there is not a good one to be found…anywhere! How can that be? One would think with all of the methods of enhancing and manipulating, there would be a way to keep what should be the sweetest, most delicious fruit on earth – sweet and delicious! I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love biting into a sweet, fleshy chunk of melon (and who didn’t try shoving the rind into their mouth to make a big green smiley face as a kid!), the juice dribbling down my chin, getting onto my hands… As an adult, I refrain from getting completely wearing it, but I still love the texture, the wholesome goodness of it, and the clarity of its flavor. Watermelon is one of life’s purest pleasures. There is nothing you need to add (unless you carve out the melon and add vodka, for a really grown up treat, but that is another story). But in winter, in Florida, that goodness is gone. If we can’t get it here, it simply doesn’t exist. Just so we can all be on the same page, the ideal melon has a medium pink colored flesh, that I neither powdery nor translucent looking. It is crisp and clean to the touch and taste, and sweet. I do not care if it has pits or not (although many prefer the genetically engineered pit-less variety). A good watermelon will keep for up to four days before beginning to turn. Be sure to keep it in a covered plastic container. And so you know, here is how to select a melon: Look at the watermelon. You want
a firm, symmetrical watermelon bruisefree, of course; no cuts or dents. Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy (for its size). FACTOID: Watermelon is 92% water, making it predominantly H2O. The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. If all of this falls into place, it should be a good one. I like to thump the top or bottom with my thumb. If it sounds hollow, like an echo, you should be in good shape. With that out of the way, let’s talk about finding a good one in the winter. I was thinking, hmmm…maybe they supply different quality levels of melon to different levels of market in “off” season. So I did a little investigative eating. Everyplace was between $5 and $10.And here is what I found: Cosctco: Looked good. Cut it open. Okay consistency. Not too sweet. For $6, I could deal. Fresh Market: Very Small. Very expensive. Very pink, but flavorless. Publix: The most expensive. Tried this three times. The thump seemed okay, but there was NO flavor to be found. Two of the three turned in two days time. L Whole Foods: Everything here is a cut above, but I must say, not the melons in March. WalMart: Yes, I ventured to WaMart and for $5, had a huge, sort of tasty, melon. It was a bit mealy, but also seemed to last longer than the rest. Go Figure! Yellow Green Market: Oh supposed to be organic market, please give me what I want. I paid $4, and while the price was right, the melon was not. Very disappointing all around. Oh well. You cannot have everything all the time. This all led me to believe that I would begin eating cherries and grapes and apples until the summer. Denise Rubin Talks Real Estate
Sunny Isles Beach BY DENISE RUBIN
Ly Espinol
MOver twenty-five Sunny Isles Beach condos line the Atlantic Ocean. Witness some of the most beautiful residential architecture in the world. Spectacular designs by the SaigerSuarez partnership, Carlos Ott, Kobi-Karp, to name a few. Many of the oceanfront condos for sale in Sunny Isles Beach are state of the art buildings that offer international class amenities. Several house 5 and 4.5 star quality hotels, spas, restaurants and more. What once was an “Old Florida” resort town where the beaches were lined with motels has come of age in the new millennium. The new skyline is comprised o soaring glass high rise condos and internationally branded condohotels, a new city hall and park. Just over the bridge on the South, lies neighboring, pricey Bal Harbour and the Bal Harbour Shops. Just west over the William Lehman causeway a hop, skip, and jump away is the city of Aventura, the Aventura Mall, the Waterways and their shops and restaurants. You are equidistant to Miami and Ft Lauderdale and their respective airports. Sunny Isles condos provide you with world class
resort amenities and oceanfront living while only minutes to access Aventura or Bal Harbour. Many part time residents and International multiple home owners flock to Sunny Isles for it’s tropical waters and pristine beaches just outside their condos. It’s the perfect place to escape the cold, freezing winter snow and blizzards so much of the country endures. The international buyers come from everywhere: Russia, Canada, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, London, Switzerland, China, and many more. We all so proudly come together to enjoy Sunny Isles Beach and oceanfront paradise. Amongst the outstanding Hotels are Trump International Beach Resort and 5-star Mediterranean inspired Acqualina Resort and Spa, an award winning building and stunning architectural structure. Standing out amongst the most scenic condos are Jade Beach and Jade Ocean with their can’t miss Las Vegas style “wow” design. A favorite of mine is Turnberry Ocean Colony. They all have in common the phenomenal location, a short drive to daytime activities and the nightlife of Miami Beach, South Beach, Hollywood and Ft. Lauderdale. A true beachfront haven, there is only one, Sunny Isles Beach. Call Denise Rubin at 305-409-0019 for all your real estate needs and visit www.deniserubin.com for listings and virtual tours.

New ‘green’ machines making way into auto marketplace Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH They’re the hi-tech cars of the future, and they slowly are making their way into the mainstream marketplace. Take for example, the Nissan’s AllElectric Leaf. It’s so revolutionary in fact that it doesn’t even have a tailpipe. And it’s not alone. General Motors’ electric hybrid also is a plug-in vehicle that uses batteries and a gas-powered engine to generate power for its electric motors. It literally plugs in overnight. Likewise, Ford has a model of its own, the new Focus Electric, and that’s in addition to a whole herd of new Ford hybrids. Still, the cost of “going green” comes with a stiff price. Chevy’s Volt carries a base price of about $41,000, but there’s also a $7,500 tax credit that buyers are entitled to once they make their purchase. The Volt has a battery range of about 50
miles and then it uses its gas engine to generate electricity for a range of several hundred miles more. A full recharge takes about eight to 10 hours using a regular 110 outlet. Nissan’s Leaf sells for about $33,000 and also is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. It has a range of about 100 miles before it has to be recharged. However, it takes 18 to 20 hours to achieve a full charge. In addition, there’s a charger that can be purchased for an extra cost that provides a special high voltage line that cuts the charger time down to about eight hours. Unfortunately, no matter how badly we want to go green, we just can’t do it yet. That’s because we can’t get them anywhere in South Florida. As it turns out, Florida will be one of the last states in the country to get these cars. We may see them later this year, but that’s at the earliest. So what’s the problem? It seems that we don’t have an existing electrical infrastructure. That means there’s no place to publicly recharge the electric cars. And that’s because Florida, unlike other states taking part in the “green” revolution sim-
ply hasn’t prepared for them. That disappoints a lot of local consumers who want to go green right now, but can’t. There’s another problem as well. Anyone who doesn’t have a garage, including millions of Florida condo and apartment residents, currently has no way of recharging them, due to the fact that there’s no outside outlet that they can plug in to. Plus, with the economy as tough as it is, private businesses and condo associ-
ations may be reluctant to spend big bucks for public chargers. In other words, this is a dilemma — one that’s being debated all over the country. What comes first, the electric cars or their charger stations? Watch Al Sunshine’s “CBS Money Watch” reports Monday-Friday beginning at noon. You may find Al’s blog at cbsMiami.com.

Be ‘sexy forever’ with online weight-loss program: Suzanne Somers and Jillian Michaels team with AOL BY BARI AUERBACH To stay “sexy forever,” experts agree diet and exercise are among the most important factors in helping women look and feel their best as they age. Some have found online diet and exercise programs can address specific needs and produce great results, so America Online (AOL) is teaming with actress Suzanne Somers to offer her new “Sexy Forever” program, addressing issues specifically for women over 40; and TV’s “Biggest Loser” trainer Jillian Michaels offering her specialized, no-nonsense approach to nutrition and fitness. ‘Be Sexy Forever’ For two decades, Somers worked with cutting-edge doctors to develop the “Sexy Forever” program. She discovered that shifting hormones, food combinations and even cosmetics can play a role in the ability to lose weight. H e r new customized program guides users through steps necessary to start losing weight again and offers online tools to “balance hormones, detoxify your life and recharge metabolism.” Somers says, “Hormonal imbalance can cause accelerated aging, poor health, and weight gain. The ‘Sexy Forever’ program can teach you how to balance your hormones to rev up your metabolism and lose weight. Addressing “toxic burdens” she notes, “In today’s world, everyone’s environment is overloaded with toxins that can change your chemical makeup and slow your metabolism. But the “Sexy Forever” online program can help you detoxify to lose weight.” Somers also believes, “Food allergies or sensitivities can get in the way of losing weight and feeling healthy. Did you know forty-three percent of people are gluten intolerant and most don’t even know it?” The “Sexy Forever” weight-loss program
also includes hundreds of recipes, personal meal planners, fitness advice, a shopping list tool, food log, nutrition fact finder, activity, calorie and healthy weight-loss calculators, weight and inch trackers, a personal journal, message boards, and support from Suzanne. ‘Be a Biggest Loser’ Jillian Michaels, the star trainer from TV’s The Biggest Loser, has also created a customized weight-loss program providing tools and motivation to reach health and fitness goals. The program is designed to help overcome personal obstacles, jumpstart your metabolism, burn fat, build muscle, lose weight and “transform your body.” Michaels’ step-by-step plan includes customized nutrition guidelines based on your body type, “killer” exercises, and her infamous “tough-love” motivation. The plan helps you track weightloss online, eat right with daily meal plans and features Michaels’ “triple-threat” approach to weight loss: (1) Set your goals and determine your unique metabolism type; (2) Stay the course with daily motivation, advice on how to detox safely and tips on how to burn fat faster that can help you stay fully engaged; (3) See results - from tracking success with regular weigh-ins - to sharing milestones and inspiration with fellow members, you can achieve your goals – and celebrate their fulfillment…Michaels’ online team has lost over a million pounds so far! Michaels’ plan also includes recipes and personal meal planners, fitness advice videos, 151 printable exercise, an ultimate menu guide, healthy weight and calorie calculators, weight loss buddies, message boards and “Ask Jillian.” The Suzanne Somers “Sexy Forever” and Jillian Michaels online weight-loss programs are both being offered by AOL for a 7 day free trial and $14.95 per month thereafter. Miami Wind Symphony announces inaugural season preview concert BY DOROTHY STEIN
The Miami Wind Symphony, an ensemble of South Florida’s finest professional woodwind, brass and percussion instrumentalists, will present its debut performance on Sunday, Apr. 10, 4 p.m., at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, 174 E. Flagler St. in downtown Miami. Under the baton of artistic director Rodester Brandon, a career leader in music education who founded the 50person ensemble in 2010, the Miami Wind Symphony is one of only two organizations of its kind in the United States. “A wind symphony has a unique sound that is very lush and rich,” said Brandon, a full-time music educator who is chair of the Music, Dance and Theater Departments at Miami Dade College. “Through this genre we can perform classical, contemporary, pop, show-type and Big Band music. It will be a concert experience never before presented on a professional level in South Florida. “This is ‘big music,’” Brandon added. “No strings attached!” The repertoire for the preview concert will include Aaron Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait, narrated by WPLG-Local 10 news anchor Calvin Hughes. A lifetime

New Gleick book tells history on information technologies BY JOSEFINE KALS
James Gleick, our leading chronicler of science and modern technology, and author of the bestsellers Chaos and Genius, brings us his crowning work: The Information (Pantheon Books $29.95), a chronicle that shows how information has become the modern era’s defining quality — the blood, the fuel, the vital principle of our world. The story of information begins in a time profoundly unlike our own, when every thought and utterance vanished as soon as it was born. From the invention of scripts and alphabets to the long misunderstood “talking drums” of Africa, James Gleick tells the story of information technologies that changed the very nature of human consciousness. He provides portraits of the key figures contributing to the inexorable development of our modern understanding of information: Charles Babbage, the idiosyncratic inventor of the first great mechanical computer; Ada Byron, the poet’s brilliant and doomed daughter, who became the first true programmer; pivotal figures like Samuel Morse and Alan Turing, and Claude Shannon, the creator of information theory itself. And then the information age comes upon us. Citizens of this world become experts willy-nilly — aficionados of

bits and bytes. And they sometimes feel they are drowning, swept by a deluge of signs and signals, news and images, blogs and tweets. The Information is the story of how we got here and where we are heading, and Gleick, whose “skills as an interpreter of science shine,” is the perfect person to tell this story. Gleick’s first book, Chaos, a National Book Award finalist, has been translated into 25 languages. His bestselling biographies, Genius: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman and Isaac Newton, were short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize. The Information was seven years in the making. Gleick, who divides his time between New York and Florida, will be speaking and signing his new book on Thursday, Mar. 10, 8 p.m., at Books and Books, 265 Aragon Ave. in Coral Gables.
