A Jolt from the Blue

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Sometimes you are just cruising along when it happens. You receive a phone call or a note in the mail that interrupts your life momentarily. It’s a reunion of your class from high school, college or graduate school. A reunion is usually a social gathering with people you were associated with in the past. It is the opportunity to reunite with people who were a very important part of your life at a very important time in your life. It allows you to renew old friendships and to make new ones. Reunions can provide the incentive you need to get going and become all that you can be. Reunions remind you of who you were and who you have become. They force you to review your life which can be a good thing. They provide an opportunity to take a personal inventory of where you are and where you want to be. This can be emotional and stir up deep-seated psychological

issues. Reunions also stir up remembered joys or remembered sorrows. They may make you feel nostalgic and yearn for the “good old days” or they may make you feel pain and regret. Some people will not go to their reunions because they are not proud of themselves. They might be embarrassed and ashamed by their past actions and attitudes and their perceived lack of current success. They may not want to be judged. Remember however, it can provide a chance to rewrite your story and set the record straight. Some people will go because they are very proud of themselves and they want to show off a little and be envied. It is acceptable to be proud of your accomplishments. If you decide to go and if it is appropriate and you have the time, make yourself the best that you can be physically and psychologically. Have a very short summary of your life that you can repeat with confidence. Go with a pure, non-judgmental and kind heart. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864.

War of the World

Bob Diamond

HISTORICALLY YOURS Although I was only age seven, I remember vividly what happened on Sunday evening October 30, 1938. Our family was glued to our favorite media – the radio (before television). My father’s favorite dramatist was Orson Wells. With his program “Mercury Theatre on the Air,” Wells decided to adapt and update H.G. Wells’ well known novel, “War of the Worlds,” to radio. The broadcast opened with Wells setting the scene of the play: “We know now that in the early years of the 20th century this world was closely watched by intelligences greater than man’s and yet as mortal as his own…” As Wells continued, a weather report suddenly faded in, quickly followed by music from the Hotel Plaza. The music was interrupted by an important news update from newscasters and scientists from various locations. Professor Richard Pierson at the Princeton Observatory reported that “a huge shock of almost earthquake intensity occurred near Princeton…I believe it might be a mete-

orite.” Another news bulletin announced that a huge, flaming object, believed to be a meteorite, fell on a farm near Grovers Mill, New Jersey, some 22 miles from Trenton.” Reporter Carl Phillips began reporting what he witnessed at Grovers Mill: “Ladies and gentlemen, this is the most terrifying thing I have ever witnessed…something’s wiggling out of two luminous disks, like gray snakes.... Now, another one, another one… they look like tentacles..I can see the things body…that face is indescribable.. awful.” Phillips continued, “the invaders used weapons…now the whole field is on fire…it strikes advancing men with fire… the State Militia are mobilizing …” The station then warned of the invasion of Martians attacking Earth. The Secretary of the Interior addressed the nation, “We must confront this destructive adversary with a nation dedicated to preserving humanity.” A reporter announced that New York City “was being evacuated.” Listeners panicked, many believing the end was near. Thousands called radio stations, police and newspapers. Many families loaded their cars and fled their homes. Hours later, people calmed down, realizing the Martian invasion was not real; it was Halloween and it was only a story based upon a novel.

‘On the Path to Success’ with Arnold Goldman of The Alternative Board

BY BARI AUERBACH

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE AG: TAB is a private membership organization comprised of owners, presidents and CEOs of privately- held companies. The TAB process is considered the premier strategic planning process for small and medium-size businesses. Each month I visit with dozens of TAB members in the Aventura and Broward County areas. I also serve as co-coach for the Aventura Marketing Council’s productive Executive Suites program, helping AMC members continue to grow and move forward in their business and personal lives.

ARNOLD GOLDMAN, PRESIDENT THE ALTERNATIVE BOARD OF SOUTH BROWARD

Q: How does The Alternative Board (TAB) help business leaders get that competitive advantage in today’s uncertain marketplace?

April 25 - May 1, 2012

Q: We always talk about success but what do you see in common with companies that are underperforming? AG: The business cycle often gets derailed quite quickly by under capitalization. After surviving that stage, companies enter into the growth stage where sales and team building become vital. Too often I find key positions in small and medium-size businesses are filled by the wrong people with important responsibilities. To paraphrase Jim Collins

in his book Good to Great: “You must have the right people on your bus; then make sure they occupy the correct seat; and get the wrong people off your bus.” Q: How can companies avoid having to say, “You’re fired!” AG: Take the guess work out of the hiring process! I strongly recommend a survey that I administer, commonly known as a DISC assessment, to determine the behaviors and motivators of potential hires and existing key staff members. Remember, you hire for “aptitude” and fire for “attitude.” Q: Can a DISC assessment also help maximize the success of existing employees? AG: DISC can be very effective for companies with dedicated employees - but less than optimal productivity. This may indicate they have “the right people on the bus – in the wrong seats.” DISC can also help solve supervisor and co-worker communication issues.

Q: What exactly is the TAB process? AG: The TAB process includes peer advisory think tank meetings and individual coaching appointments providing advice tailored to meet specific business needs – always based on real-world experience. Our ultimate goal is to encourage and empower our members to achieve their business and personal vision so they can reach their greatest potential on the path to success! Our workshop series recently focused on Team Building and featured renowned business leaders discussing hands-on applications for owners, managers and staff.

To learn more about The Alternative Board or inquire about behavioral and motivator assessments, contact Arnold Goldman for a complimentary consultation with the mention of this article; call 786-348 0994 or email: Arnold@tab-southbroward.com

Business Travel

TSA Pre?™ Can Ease Your Way Through the Airport

David Gedansky TRAVEL TIPS To help business flyers and other frequent travelers expedite their airport security screenings, the U.S. Transportation Safety Administration introduced TSA Pre?™, which pre-screens individuals who volunteer to participate. Certain frequent flyers on Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, as well as certain members of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Trusted Travelers programs, are eligible to participate. The TSA PreP program is now available at: • Dallas/Fort Worth International • McCarran International, Las Vegas • John F. Kennedy International, New York • Los Angeles International • Miami International • Minneapolis-St. Paul International • Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County • Hartsfield-Jackson International, Atlanta • Salt Lake City International • Ronald Reagan National, Washington • O’Hare International, Chicago By the end of 2012, the TSA will expand the program to these airports, as well as additional airlines: • Baltimore/Washington Int’l Thurgood Marshall • Boston Logan International • Charlotte Douglas International • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Int’l • Denver International • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International • George Bush Intercontinental, Houston • Honolulu International • Indianapolis International • LaGuardia, New York • Lambert-St. Louis International

• Louis Armstrong New Orleans Int’l • Luis Muñoz Marín International, Puerto Rico • Newark Liberty International • Orlando International • Philadelphia International • Phoenix Sky Harbor International • Pittsburgh International • Portland International • San Francisco International • Seattle-Tacoma International • Tampa International • Ted Stevens Anchorage International • Washington Dulles International If the TSA determines that a passenger is eligible for the TSA PreP program, information is embedded in the barcode on the passenger’s boarding pass. When the barcode is scanned at a security checkpoint in a participating airport, the passenger may be redirected to a line where expedited screening is available. These lines tend to move more quickly than regular screening lines because TSA PreP participants may not need to remove their shoes, jacket or belt, or remove their laptop computers or bags of liquids and gels from their carry-on bags. However, because the TSA incorporates random and unpredictable security measures throughout each airport, TSA PreP participants cannot always be guaranteed expedited screening. As a TSA PreP participant, you won’t receive anything, such as a membership card, to show that you are a participant, as you will still be pre-screened each time you fly. If you are interested in participating but haven’t received an invitation from an airline or the CBP’s Trusted Traveler program, you may still be able to opt into TSA Pre?™ by applying for one of CBP’s eligible programs, such as Global Entry, SENTRI or NEXUS. The Best Pizza in South Florida... Shari Lynn Rothstein-Kramer EAT THIS... DRINK THAT

So many of us who now live in South Florida originally hail from up North – New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut – and when you are born and raised there, pizza is a part of your life. You grow up on it. From the time you can chew, you’ve eaten the pie. A slice and a diet coke is one of the most satisfying meals in the world. So, we come down here and we expect to find the same, right? Why wouldn’t amazing pizza abound? The pizza makers from up North move down here and they have to work, so they do what they know best – they open a pizza place. It has to taste equally as delish as what they created there. It makes sense, doesn’t it? Well, in a logical world it certainly does…but logic and reality don’t always go hand in hand. As a matter of fact, sometimes, they couldn’t be farther apart. Like, in the pizza that exists in Florida. I have been here for 11 years and have eaten many a pie, praying that someone would really get it right. I’ve tasted and nibbled – and the success would be limited. Living in Aventura, we have access to everywhere. We are centrally located and many towns are just a carried away. So, after driving as far as Boca for a good slice (my sister Lauren swears by Brooklyn Brothers in Boca), I was thrilled to recently stumble upon the best new place in town – King’s County Pizza. Before I get blasted out of town, let me mention that I was a faithful Steve’s Pizza eater for years prior to finding King’s County. I still love Steve’s – it has the sweetest sauce I’ve ever tasted, and, for those of you who like sweet sauce, it will always rule. A slice of Steve’s is big enough for a meal. Ninety percent of the time, it has the right amount of crunch, the right amount of chew, enough cheese, enough sauce…and so on. Sometimes, like anyplace, they can miss. But now, let’s move on to my new favorite – King’s County. My office is on West Dixie highway. I drive from 186th to my office every day. One day, a sign went up. My husband, who’s always on the lookout for good food, already knew. He was onto it. He tried it while I was away. He loved it. I am always skeptical, but hey, if you don’t try, you don’t know. But I wanted to know, so when I walked back into the office from an appointment I had, I figured I’d order and see what the office had to say. But they beat me to the punch – it was already there just waiting for me. I looked at the box. It looked like pizza. But the smell…so doughy, so saucy, so utterly mouthwatering. “Don’t ask questions. Just eat it,” my husband suggested. Who was I to argue? I reached into the

box and pulled out a slice. A bit smaller than I’d hoped. But I reserved judgment. I sniffed. It smelled…spicy. I took a bite. And another. The cornmeal dusted bottom presented a nice texture. It was light but not too light. It was cheesy but not too cheesy. It had a hint of spice; a slight bite, but not too much bite. It was good. No, actually, it was great. But one time is not enough to guarantee perfection so the next day we ordered again. It came perfectly cooked with a few bubbles on the crust and the perfect amount of crunch, cheese, sauce and heat. I ate a slice. And then another. But when I went back for my third piece, I realized that I had hit pay dirt! I had found the pizza of my dreams. It was everything I could hope for – and it is in walking distance of my office. So I stopped in to check it out. The people seemed nice. It wasn’t jam packed, nor was it empty so I knew the food was moving (and therefore fresh) but I didn’t have to wait. Within minutes I had my pie and I was ready to eat. Since then, which was a few months ago, I’ve tried many things on the menu. A purist, a cheese pie is always the way to go for me, but the Sicilian (square, lighter, thicker dough, which is available on Friday’s only) is so satisfying. My favorites, of course, include chicken parm, which I have eaten many times and it’s always delish. Pure white meat is the key. Each dish comes with pasta – ziti or spaghetti in King’s County red sauce. I am not a big pasta fan, but rest assured – if they send it, I will eat it - all. Wings, calzones, and Stromboli are all first class, packed with just the right amount of stuffing to fill you up but not overdo it. Love them. The eggplant, which is typically my “go to” dish, is usually great. I’ve had a few close calls, where the eggplant is a bit thick and gets kind of chewy, but more often than not, it is a vegetarian’s delight. The good thing is that when I did have those out-of-the-ordinary occurrences and I called, it was addressed and taken care of immediately. Owners Tara Dolinski and Rob Rodriguez are always on-property cooking and caring for their customers. The two originally came down from New York to buy a house because “his friend lived here,” explains Dolinski. “Instead, we took my life savings and bought a pizza place.” And it’s a good thing they did. King’s County Pizza is my one “fast-food” style indulgence. It is hands-down the best pizza I have eaten in South Florida. There are lunch specials, coupons, and a variety of pizzas, square pizzas, salads, heroes, and dessert (they make a killer cannoli). You can eat in – they just turned the store at the end of the strip mall into a lovely dining area - pick up, or they’ll deliver to you. Doesn’t matter how or where you get it, just make sure you eat it! (Shari Lynn Rothstein has been writing about food, wine, lifestyles and fashion for more than 20 years, in New York and Florida. She resides in Aventura. Shari can be reached at shari@slkcreative.com for comments, questions thoughts.

Volvo C30 is a compact hatchback that’s fun to drive Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS The Volvo C30 is a two-door hatchback compact with a lot to offer. It’s sporty and fast, handles with precision and has a lot of extra standard equipment. Under the hood there’s a 227 hp 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine mated to either a standard six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed Geartronic automatic with the Auto-stick function. The front-wheel drive C30 gets pretty good fuel economy at 21/30 mpg with the automatic and 21/29 mpg with the manual gearbox. With its compact size and smart design, the Volvo C30 is fun to drive and with its relatively wide front and rear tracks and long wheelbase, it has exceptionally stable driving characteristics. With a MacPherson front suspension and a multilink rear axle, the chassis is optimized to provide outstanding control and a precise response to the driver’s demands.

The C30 T5 comes standard with a healthy roster of standard equipment, including Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), Volvo’s Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS), T-Tec upholstery, leather gearshift knob with aluminum inlay, cruise control, a high performance 160-watt audio system with eight speakers, iPod/USB and auxiliary inputs, HD Radio, and Bluetooth integrated interface including audio streaming. The C30 was restyled last year with a new front fascia, restyled fenders, a new honeycomb grille and trapezoidal headlights, so changes in 2012 are relatively minor. Two new trim levels — Premier Plus and Platinum — have been added to complement the base C30 T5 and R-Design models. The Premier Plus trim level includes a power glass sunroof, power driver’s seat, power passenger’s seat and new LED daytime running lights. This trim also includes aluminum inlays for the C30 T5 and a soft loadcover for the R-Design. The Platinum trim level offers more technology, including all the features of Premier Plus, and the 10-speaker, 650-watt Volvo Premium Sound System with Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound, a Navigation System with

real time traffic, remote control and map care plus, and Sirius/XM satellite radio. The C30’s Climate package can be added to any trim level, as well as individual features from the list of stand-alone options. Also new for 2012 is the Bluetooth audio streaming connection that allows drivers to play music from compatible cell phones directly through the C30’s audio system speakers. And, using Pandora or Grooveshark, they can create playlists and synchronize with the phone to become wireless deejays.

Other enhancements for all C30s include a standard center armrest for rear seat passengers, a standard security alarm and a new exterior color — Caspian Blue Metallic. Pricing on the Volvo C30 T5 ranges from $24,950 to $31,850.

‘Need a Lift’ Make the firm decision to start weight lifting BY BARI AUERBACH If you’ve been running, aerobicising or spinning your wheels doing endless hours of cardio – but still can’t seem to firm up – before you get totally exasberated with exercising, here’s some very “uplifting” news: Fitness plans that incorporate weight training can help everyone get toned, tighter, stronger and live longer! Men and women who routinely lift weights can reduce body fat, build muscle mass, strengthen bones, improve endurance for daily lifestyle activities and reduce their risk for heart disease. Fat Loss Benefits The average person who incorporates weight training into their fitness plan at least two times a week can gain almost two pounds of muscle and lose 3.5 pounds of fat within two months. Beyond boosting confidence, weight training can also boost your metabolic rate, making it possible to burn more calories throughout the day - even when resting. Strength Benefits Enhanced strength and endurance gained from weight training can make daily lifestyle activities easier and less tiring. The International Osteoporosis Foundation also emphasizes that people who engage in resistance training can build and maintain bone density, slow down the process that leads to osteoporosis and improve balance, strength and agility, thus preventing falls that can lead to fractures. ‘Personalized’ Training Many women are hesitant to start weight training programs because they’re afraid of becoming too bulky - but according to The American College of Sports Medicine, women’s estrogen levels prevent this from happening. A very common mistake women often

make is going to the gym and working out with their husband or boyfriend using the same workout program as they do. Many women then get frustrated and upset when they don’t see the results they want – when all along, their program only needed to be modified to suit their unique needs. While a man might want to gain some muscle and size, a woman may want to lose weight and gain definition. Given that men and women are different both physically and mentally, it would make sense that it would be optimal for them to not to train according to the same philosophies and principles. What Are You ‘Weighting’ For? If you already belong to a gym – but only take classes or use the cardio machines, make that “firm” decision to try venturing into the weight room. If you feel intimidated by all the machines, most gyms offer at least one complimentary consultation with a personal trainer who can help you get started. If a gym membership isn’t in your budget or you don’t have the time to go, you can easily pick up some free weights and bands at a store like Sports Authority and “read all about” the most effective ways to train at home online or in popular fitness magazines like Oxygen, FitnessRX, Shape, Women’s Health and Men’s Health.

Rehabilitation Institute of South Florida at Memorial Regional Hospital South Choosing the right rehabilitation facility can make a difference in how quickly your patients are able to recover from an injury, illness or disability. The Rehabilitation Institute of South Florida (RISF) offers advanced technology, board-certified physiatrists, a comprehensive facility and gym, and a highly trained staff. The quality, depth, and innovation of the program, which is unprecedented in most hospital settings, has allowed us to become known as the premiere facility in south Florida for inpatient rehabilitation needs. RISF sets itself apart from other rehabilitation centers in a number of ways: The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) including two specialty accreditations – one for our Stroke Program and the other for our Brain Injury Program The unit is the only inpatient rehabilitation facility in central/southern Broward County that is located in an acute care hospital. This is key as it allows a patient to receive physician driven medical management at the same time they are receiving an intensive rehabilitation program. And if a medical problem should arise, treatment is available immediately with comprehensive medical and diagnostic support The 56 bed unit, located at Memorial Regional Hospital South, provides patients with all private luxurious rooms equipped with individual bathrooms and showers, in a comfort-

able, homelike environment. With over 3,000 square feet of gym space, we offer the latest therapeutic equipment, including advanced robotic equipment. The unit also features a unique community re-entry area, known as Determination Drive. This area allows patients to practice navigating a grocery store, using an ATM machine, and getting in and out of a car. In addition, a transitional apartment allows patients and families to learn how to manage care at home. The combination of daily physician medical management and rehabilitation management is what allows the RISF to accept a wide variety of patients early in their hospital stay which is the key to successful and maximum physical recovery from many debilitating conditions. Over 80% of the patients in RISF return home to functional lives compared to 75% nationally for rehabilitation facilities and 35% in skilled nursing facilities. The most common diagnoses requiring a Rehab admission are neurologic—stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, brain tumor, or orthopedic—hip fracture, spinal surgery, or amputation. Many of these patients are post surgical patients or complex medical patients that have been in an acute care setting for an extended period of time and have experienced a decline in their physical capabilities. Diabetes — widespread disease is often preventable BY BRODES H. HARTLEY, JR. President/CEO, Community Health of South Florida

Diabetes is a growing disease that is largely preventable, but affects more than 25 million people in the United States and is the seventh leading cause of death. It can cause kidney failure, lower limb issues that lead to amputation, adult blindness, heart disease and stroke. It often runs in the family but many victims fail to recognize symptoms. Roughly seven million diabetics are left untreated due to financial reasons. Diabetes typically begins with high levels of blood sugar, or glucose, when the body is unable to produce insulin or use it properly to turn food into energy. Victims often experience extreme symptoms of fatigue, hunger and thirst. Some have unexplained weight loss and frequent urination. Type 1 diabetes typically is found in children and young adults, but can occur at any age. The cause? The pancreas produces too little or no insulin. The solution? Computerized pumps that send insulin into the body through a catheter inserted under the abdomen. Today’s pumps are no larger than a small cell phone. Many forget they are using them. Type 2 diabetes most often occurs in adults. The pancreas produces insulin, but the body doesn’t use it effectively. It is more common in African-Americans,

HEALTH Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders. Adults over 45 are at greater risk, as are people who are overweight, get little exercise or have a family history of diabetes. Type 2 diabetics can manage the early stages by exercising, eating more low fat foods and pushing back from the table. Some people exhibit pre-diabetes symptoms such as blood sugar at levels just a little higher than normal. They stand a better chance of preventing Type 2 diabetes if they walk every day, eat sensibly and otherwise achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Those are things we should do anyway. And these days, people have plenty of options to maintain that healthier lifestyle. We have modern, effective ways to treat the disease that involves so many people and often is so easily prevented or controlled. If the symptoms sound familiar, see your doctor soon to determine whether you have diabetes.

Brodes Hartley, Jr. has served as President/CEO of Community Health of South Florida for 27 years. The non-profit organization provides affordable quality health care to south Miami-Dade and Monroe County. For more information, visit <www.chisouthfl.org>.

The rebirth of Aeroponics We’ve all heard the old adage, “everything old is new again.” Well, that statement could not be any truer then when it comes to aeroponic growing. Dating back to biblical times, the ‘Hanging Gardens of Babylon’ were considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. These magnificent gardens were a present by King Nebuchadnezzar to his wife, Amyitis, who was homesick for the lush plant filled landscape of her native country. The Hanging Gardens had plants cultivated above ground level, with its roots exposed rather than planted into the earth. Streams of water flowed down vertical channels which irrigated the entire garden saturating the roots of the plants keeping the whole area moist, green and succulent. This was the ancient beginning of what we today refer to as aeroponic vertical growing. It is the newest way for us to be able to grow our own healthy garden of fruits and vegetables without a field to plant in or the need for soil. This concept should not be too foreign to us, just think of the magnificent orchids that dot our landscape, attaching themselves to trees with their roots exposed. Mother Nature is brilliant and now we get an opportunity to copy one of her natural wonders. For more information on how you too can grow your own fresh nutritious fruits and veg-

What We Leave Behind Here’s a first novel highly recommended, especially for women. Honest and powerful writing at its best, targeted especially at any woman who has ever wondered ‘what might have been.’ —James Grippando, best-selling author of the critically acclaimed “Jack Swyteck” series North Miami Beach (NMB) resident Rochelle Weinstein will read from her debut novel “What We Leave Behind” on Thursday, May 3, 6 p.m. at Temple Sinai in NMB, following a Q&A, wine and cheese reception and a book signing. A portion of the purchase price of books sold that evening will be donated to Temple Sinai, to further its mission of nurturing Jewish life in South Florida. It is said that our lives are a sum total of the choices we make, which inevitably leaves us to always wonder: what if? What if we had the chance to go back and live what could have been? What fills the private places in our hearts and inhibits us from true happiness? What We Leave Behind (2012) tells the story of Jessica Parker, a clever, mischievous young girl with a wit too quick for her own good, who is torn between a desire for solitude and a deep need to be at the center of a perfect family. The loss of her father at four shrouds her with a distrust of love and the obvious transience of loved ones sticking around. She unwittingly carries this pain with her and it filters through to all of her relationships. For more information, contact Temple Sinai at 305-932-9010 or visit tsnd.org.

King Jewelers is pleased to announce its 100th anniversary BY LEE STEPHENS

South Florida’s premier jeweler of integrity since 1912, is proud to announce their 100th Anniversary. The retail landmark founded by Louis King in 1912, has been the personal jeweler to many generations of South Florida families. At King Jewelers, the family incorporates a no-pressure sales approach. The primary objective is to match the client with the perfect piece of jewelry that suits there style and personality. King Jewelers carries price points for every budget and for all occasions. King Jewelers cherishes the loyalty and longevity of their customer relationships. Recently, the store sold an engagement ring to the son of a customer whose entire family has been shopping at King Jewelers since 1946. “My parents and their parents all purchased their engagement rings here. I couldn’t think of trusting anyone more than the Kings,” said Aventura resident Robert Goldstein. Since 1912 the company has been family owned and operated. Born in Miami Beach, Scott King literally grew up in his family’s store. Nevertheless, when Scott King went off to college in the late ’60s, he had no intention of going into the family business. After graduating, at his father’s request, he returned to Miami Beach to lend a hand. That was more than 40 years ago, and he has been continuing the family legacy ever since. Scott assumed the role of president in 1986 and has since risen to become CEO and one of the most respected authorities on diamonds, precious stones and estate jewelry in the Southeastern United States. A gemologist, throughout his career, Scott King has dedicated himself and the resources of King Jewelers to the design and manufacturing of diamond, platinum and gold creations that represent the perfect marriage of quality, craftsmanship and value. For more than 30 years, Scott’s wife, Maxine, has served as the company’s jewelry buyer and current president. Always in search of unique and fashion-forward jewelry creations, Maxine brings the hottest European trends to South Florida before anyone else seems to find it. Maxine has been known not only as a woman of glamour and style but most importantly for the way she makes her clients feel – special. Her friendly smile and warm and bubbly personality makes shopping at King Jewelers a comfortable and fun experience. According to husband Scott, “Maxine puts herself in the client’s shoes and makes them feel comfortable about their purchase.” Scott represents the fourth generation of Kings to own and operate the family business, and he’s currently watching a fifth generation gain continued success in the business. “I want my sons to be their own men,

The King Family, (l-r) are David, Jono, Maxime and John King along with their pooch Aunra

Circa 1949, exterior and Interior (below) of King Jewelers

with the conviction to pursue their own individual dreams; however, I’ve always hoped those dreams would lead them back to King Jewelers. So yes, when David decided he wanted to carry on the tradition, I was thrilled, but I’m not ready to hang up my loop yet.” Following graduation from the

University of Pennsylvania, and a Wall Street tour with Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan, David returned to Miami to join the family business. By 2004, David, currently the Director of Business Development, relocated King Jewelers with his parents to Aventura, FL

and opened an exclusive men’s salon and timepiece boutique to compliment the extraordinary ladies jewelry collections. Upon graduating from law school, Jono King joined the family business in 2005, and is now the CFO of King Jewelers. The King family decided to expand their regional presence in the Southeast as they celebrated the grand opening of a second King Jewelers location in Nashville, TN in late 2008. David King runs the show at the Nashville store, located at 4121 Hillsboro Road in the Green Hills shopping area. Today the King family continues to work together. Scott, the CEO of the 100-year-old King Jewelers, is the landmark designer and wholesaler of fine jewelry and diamonds for the five generation family run business. Regarded as South Florida’s top appraiser, Scott is the expert gemologist of choice for major insurance companies for replacements and valuations. Included in the prestigious Top 100 Young Executives in the U.S. and Who’s Who of Leading American Executives, he’s the youngest member ever voted into the Diamond Club of Antwerp. He is also a member of the Appraiser’s Associate of America, Independent Appraiser Association of America, American Gem Trade Association, and Diamond Dealer’s Club of Florida, and an affiliate member of the New York Diamond Club. And that, according to Scott King, is what the legacy of King Jewelers is all about – selection, value, exclusivity, and above all, a 100-year commitment to quality and exceptional customer service. When the King’s are not working, you can usually find them enjoying time together boating, dining, traveling, or attending sporting events. King Jewelers is located at 18265 Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura, Florida. For more information, please call (305) 935-4900 or visit www.kings1912.com. ABOUT KING JEWELERS Established in 1912, the King family has owned and operated King Jewelers for five generations while building an outstanding reputation steeped in quality, value, and first-class service. Today, King Jewelers has brick-and-mortar stores located in Aventura, FL and Nashville, TN, both of which have won numerous regional and national awards of distinction.
