rom Italy and Japan - to New York, Washington, Art-Basel Miami and now Sher Galleries in Aventura. An exhibition of masterpiece works by internationally-renowned sculptor Esther Wertheimer was recently showcased during an exclusive Aventura Marketing Council networking reception hosted by Sher Galleries in the Waterways Shoppes. Bruce and Laura Sher welcomed AMC business and community leaders to the gallery for the special event, giving guests an opportunity to personally meet Wertheimer, whose passion for dance, family, and love are expressed through her magnificent bronze sculptures. While enjoying complimentary wine and music by Joel Odierno, guests learned more about Wertheimer’s illustrious career and numerous honors. In 2009, she won the prestigious “Gold Medal of

Lorenzo il Magnifico” when participating in Italy’s Florence Bienale. Wertheimer’s sculpture “Madre Gambe Incrociate” also won Best in Show at the “100% Pure Florida” exhibition held at the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Melbourne, Florida. She was selected “Artist of the Month” by Artists Registry; and a feature article about her colored bronze sculptures appeared in Palm Beach Illustrated magazine. At Sher Galleries, Wertheimer’s awardwinning, colored bronze sculptures capturing poetic gestures and expressive forms captivated AMC members. The sculptures are critically acclaimed for being: “Symbolic of her love of the figure and exceptional gift for using graceful elongations to capture the rhythmic beauty of the human spirit. Her work is at once sensitively delicate and vigorously intense. Life and energy flow from extended limbs and cascading draperies.

Considered one of the nation’s finest flag football teams, Mo Steel consists of two divisions, Juniors and Vets. The Juniors won their unprecedented third straight national title, a new NFL record, and the Vets won their second straight title by defeating their rivals from Dallas. “Anyone who knows sports, knows that winning anything consecutively like this is difficult and almost unheard of,” remarked David Fried, Head Coach of the Mo Steel teams, and Director of Prime Time Sports at the MAR-JCC. Social Anxiety Disorder is SAD

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Social Anxiety Disorder or SAD is a condition that many people suffer from. It is ironic that the initials of the disorder spell sad because the disorder is just that. It is very sad because the individual does not enjoy social interaction which is an important part of life. SAD occurs in any situation where the individual will be doing something in front of or in the presence of other people. This can include working, meeting new people, making conversation, giving a speech, dining out, attending parties or events. Even using a public restroom can be a source of distress. The Disorder is characterized by a “marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations with exposure to unfamiliar people or scrutiny. This fear is excessive and unreasonable. Exposure to the situation will provokes anxiety and distress and avoidance of the feared situation. The fear occurs whenever unwanted atten-

tion may be focused on you or whenever you may be scrutinized or judged by others. It is an overpowering fear and dread that you may be rejected, humiliated or embarrassed. Anything that makes you the center of attention makes you feel extremely uncomfortable, out of control and truly helpless..75 % of the people with this condition have another disorder such as depression or alcohol or substance abuse as well. The anxiety can produce physical symptoms such as blushing, dry mouth sweating, clammy hands, trembling, palpitations, an upset stomach and a shaky voice. The individual may experience difficulty concentrating and making eye contact with others. They cannot focus on anyone or anything but themselves and their own distress. The individual’s reaction goes well beyond shyness or normal discomfort. It has a crippling effect on their life. There are things you can do to overcome social anxiety. You do not have to endure it. You can learn to enjoy social activity. Cognitive therapy has proven to be a very successful treatment. There are also medications that can mitigate the symptoms. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

BY LYNN CARROLL

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE L C : What sets Mona Liza Smiles a p a r t f ro m t h e c o m p e t i t i o n ? LF-H: I’d say it’s our level of dedication to the comfort and well-being of all our patients. We treat them like friends, not just a mouth – after all, there’s a person attached to those teeth! We use the best quality products and technological treatments to make a visit to the dentist as comfortable and inviting as possible. Unfortunately, when many people think about dentistry, it’s about how scary and unpleasant it is, and how much it hurts. Nowadays, it doesn’t have to be that way. My focus is to have every patient who walks through my door want to return to see me, not just because they need to!

L C : W h a t ’s your specialty? LF-H: I always say my specialty is giving you a timeless smile. We practice both general and cosmetic dentistry, and our patients range in age from 2-98, so we do a little bit of everything — Invisalign braces, oral surgery, endodontic, restorations. We have an orthodontist and a periodontist on staff. We’ve tried to make it so that our patients can get almost all of their dental work done comfortably right here. But in the rare cases where a patient’s needs would be best served by a specialist, we can make excellent referrals.

L C : What do you do for r elaxation? LF-H: I believe in living life. We have all this nature around us and that is my playground. Scuba diving is at the top of the list. The ocean is a place where I can relax, take in the scenery and even look at some teeth while I’m down there. I try to exclude sharks; they lose them anyway and they don’t like to floss! Riding motorcycles is another form of therapy, and I also like to get back to basics with camping and hiking.

My Favorite First Lady

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS I shocked my “First Ladies” history class years ago at FIU, Elders Institute in response to the question as to my personal favorite First Lady? “Grace Coolidge,” I answered, “wife of Calvin Coolidge. She lit up the room with the sunshine of her personality.” Raised in Vermont, Grace, after graduating from college, attended Clarke Institute and became a teacher to deaf children. She then met another Vermonter, Calvin Coolidge, who was her exact opposite; he was emotionally cold and painfully shy. Grace dedicated herself to helping Calvin overcome his limitations. In 1920, Calvin became Vice President. With Harding’s death in 1923, “Silent Cal” became President. While Calvin was emotionally unexpressive, Grace, with her natural simplicity, warmth and “million dollar smile,” opened her arms, not just to her husband, but to all of America. Grace became the most beloved

First Lady of her generation. Her accomplishments and honors as First Lady would fill this article. Although Grace had a great sense of humor, Calvin enjoyed getting the last word in. The press reported on a trip the Coolidge’s made to a chicken farm. As the farmer was taking the First Lady through the hen house, the rooster mounted the hen. Grace asked, “Does the rooster do that often?” The farmer responded, “Several times a day.” “Tell that to the President,’ said the smiling Grace. The farmer did as he was told. With a straight face, the President asked, “With the same hen?” “No,” said the farmer. Calvin got in the last word. “Tell that to Mrs. Coolidge.” Tragedy struck in 1924. Their teen age sons, John and Calvin Jr. played tennis at the White House. Calvin Jr. did not disclose a blister on his foot until it became infected. It led to blood poisoning and he soon died. The President literally fell apart. The nation went into mourning. Grace maintained her equanimity in the face of grief. Herbert Hoover said that Grace became “ninety percent of the administration.” I did reveal to my FIU class that of all the First Ladies, Grace reminded me most of my wife.

Sher Galleries hosts networking reception Continued from page 1 ––––––– There is a deep-rooted joy forming the essence of each work – the joy of living.” AMC art aficionados agreed Wertheimer’s creations show great sensitivity to line and space, earning accolades such as: “Her work forges a connection between bodies and souls, blurring the line between our physical and spiritual beings. Dancers are captured in dynamic weightlessness, their forms generating a language of visual poetry. Mothers hold their children in the air with confidence and delight.” AMC jetsetters contemplated using their frequent flyer miles to see Wertheimer’s 13-foot “Primavera” sculpture installed in front of Japan’s Fukuoka City Hall – or her magnificent “Paulo and Francesca” sculpture in Texas dedicated to the Dallas Ballet Company. More regional excursions were planned to view Wertheimer’s competition- winning, nine-foot “Seven Dancers” sculpture now at Northwest Florida State College; and her 23-foot Water Babies sculpture at the Royal Palm Plaza in Boca Raton. Wertheimer currently works out of her studios in Boca Raton as well as Montreal, Canada where she grew up, studied at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and then went on to study in Italy. During the networking reception, AMC members also shared rave reviews for Sher Galleries’ impressive collection of artwork by a variety of international contemporary artists. Established in 1970, Sher Galleries is an authorized gallery meeting the highest standards of quality in terms of sales and service. Beyond supplying certificates of authenticity, Sher Galleries has highly-specialized knowledge of all exhibited artwork and artists. Before the evening was over, Sharon King of State Farm and Bob Cahn of AFLAC won original lithograph prints of a sketch depicting Wertheimer’s Paolo & Francesca bronze sculpture featured on Sher Galleries’ invitation…and everyone looked forward to being invited to build business again at upcoming Aventura Marketing Council networking events. Al Sunshine CBS MONEY WATCH Could it be that the bleak news is behind us? It seems that South Florida’s economy has seen a steady, slow recovery for the first quarter, with tourism and foreign trade seeing decent improvements. As we enter the second quarter, what can we expect and, more importantly, what can we do about it? Wall Street closed the quarter with the best showing in 13 years. Our investments and retirement accounts should be seeing decent gains. South Florida’s housing market is seeing its huge inventory of distressed properties getting smaller by the month. At the start of the second quarter, some problems around town are getting better. But some old ones still remain. Pepi Cancio, a Coral Gables contractor said, “I’m in the construction industry and business has been down for me and a lot of other people, and there’s still a lot of people suffering.” The local construction industry remains a key part of our economy and it is expected to continue seeing tough times. What is the problem? Forecasts for higher gas prices will slow consumer spending and hold back demand for new housing and commercial units. While pri-

vate hiring is expected to continue to see moderate gains, budget cuts may trigger a new wave of layoffs for government workers. Real estate sales are improving, but prices may still bottom out. We’ll continue attracting foreign investment and foreign tourism, but don’t be surprised to see cuts in domestic tourism as we approach the slow summer. As far as our family finances are concerned, the second quarter will probably be dominated by rising consumer prices that are all based on rising energy costs. Lane Jones of Coral Gables’ Evensky & Katz warns, “I think the most important thing is not to let rising energy costs catch you off guard. Look over your budget to start seeing what you need to do to adjust it, so it doesn’t catch you by surprise.” There’s also another problem facing family finances. We should expect limited income growth, as companies start trimming costs to make up for higher operating expenses. As a result, don’t be surprised to see a slowdown in consumer spending, even as local businesses slash prices to try to get customers back to the checkout counters. Second quarter South Florida-style will continue to see some old problems getting better. But our stalled construction, employment and personal incomes will continue to be a problem for quite a while, with no quick and easy fixes anywhere in sight. Hard Rock Café Hollywood to host Make-A-Wish fundraiser, April 29th BY LYNN CARROLL

Hard Rock Café in Hollywood is wishing upon a Starr as it raises funds locally for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida on April 29th in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, One Seminole Way. Emily Estefan’s group “The Dealers” and “Classic Rock Therapy,” featuring other musicians from the region, will be in the musical spotlight for the Friday evening event as Hard Rock raises money to fulfill the dreams of a child from the Hollywood area who is in terminal condition. Granting the wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions is the mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Hard Rock Café is linking the local effort to its global “Wish Upon a Starr” campaign, which features a limited edition T-shirt designed by Ringo Starr, the drummer for the Beatles who now presides over his own group, The Ringo Starr All Star Band. The shirt, officially dubbed the limited-edition Ringo Starr Signature Series Edition 28, is

Humane Society of Greater Miami, Miami-Dade Animal Services, and The Cat Network, are holding the first communitywide joint adoption event, “Nothing Like A Pet,” on Saturday April 30th and Sunday May 1st, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adoptions will take place at the Humane Society of Greater Miami at 16101 West Dixie Highway in North Miami Beach; Miami Dade Animal Services at 7401 NW 74th Street in Miami and The Cat Network and Humane Society at 10700 SW 211 Street in Cutler Bay. Refreshments will be served, and there will be a chance to win some fun door prizes. The Humane Society of Greater Miami will offer reduced fees for adoption on those two days. The goal of the partnership is to increase the number of cats and dogs that leave the shelter system alive. Events like “Nothing Like A Pet” will help the partners reach their goal. The more pets that are adopted, the more pets can be saved. There is nothing more gratifying than adopting an abandoned abused or neglected dog or cat who is looking for a new loving home. Since 2007 the ASPCA has been lending its support financially and through training and other human resources to communities around the country with the goal of helping them save more animals. Stay tuned for a real ‘Tasti Talk’ BY DAVID & GOLDIE I think Goldie has figured out my real name is David. [She’s been calling me Nana since she could speak… maybe because I keep a tissue in my sleeve to wipe her runny nose.] Now, when I leave “Goldie’s house” to go to “Nana’s house,” she says “bye David.” Could Uncle David be far behind? Come to think of it, for a 3 year old, Goldie seems to have a lot figured out. For example, she can “do, do buckles” on her shoes, car seat, and to the dismay of her mother, the buckle of Mommy’s Gucci bag where she dumps everything on the floor so she can get her Dora cup. She has also mastered how to unlock AND open doors: the front door, sliding glass doors, her bedroom door, the car door….. While we all applaud her dexterity, we also reminisce about the days when she was content just staring at light bulbs. And like any budding young diva, she’s also figured out that staying healthy and fit is essential to her overall well-being. That’s why she’s thrilled her uncle is opening a Tasti D-Lite in Sunny Isles Beach this May. She loves Tasti because it has just 70 calories per serving, is made from

real dairy and natural ingredients, has a creamy delicious taste and she can get more than 100 flavors every day. Plus Tasti is kosher and has lactase to aid in the digestion of dairy…which is helpful at any age!! With a name like Goldie, she tends to channel the wisdom of aunts and great aunts, grandmothers and great grandmothers alike. And with that she has figured out a few things too! For example, Goldie intuitively knows when someone needs a little extra love. Whether it’s a friend on the playground who is sitting all alone, one of her older neighbors who has sadly become “newly single,” or her uncle Nana who has just had an exhausting day, Goldie shows up with a smile and hug that melts every problem away. Finally, and unbelievably for a 3 year old, Goldie knows when silence is…well….golden. Goldie seems to know when to leave well enough alone…when Mommy has had enough… And me, well I’m just figuring out…. For more Tasti Talk, live and in person, please come visit us. And tell them, “Goldie sent you!” Tasti D-Lite is located at 17100 Collins Ave. in Sunny Isles Beach (next to Starbucks). 305-944-4200. Watch out for the opening of Tasti D-Lite this May.

Eat more...Cheat less BY BARI AUERBACH Did you know male and female fitness/bodybuilding champions often eat as much as eight times a day to attain and maintain lean, muscular physiques? Today, nutritionists and weight-loss experts agree that frequently eating small meals and snacks is preferable to limiting yourself to three large meals or cutting calories to the point of virtual starvation. According to Jorge Cruise, author of The 3-Hour Diet, the book about eating the right foods every three hours to achieve weight loss goals, the biggest mistake you can make when trying to lose weight is to skip meals. “When you skip meals throughout the day your blood sugar plummets, causing you to overeat - and when you overeat, you gain weight,” Cruise says. “When you eat the right foods every three hours you will not feel hungry. Why? Because you will keep your blood sugar level stable and keep your appetite under control. When you’re in control of your appetite, you’re in control of your weight.” Can you also boost your metabolism by eating more? Well, not really more food, but rather “more often.” Experts say that eating at least six small meals a day can help you slim down your waistline. According to the American Journal of Epidemiology, people who eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day are 45% more likely to beat obesity than their “3 square meals a day” counterparts. What are the right foods for breakfast, a midmorning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner, and an optional nighttime snack?. Optimally, there should be a low glycemic carb, lean protein, and “good” fat on your plate every time you eat. You should also follow portion size guidelines (for example, veggies should fill half your plate, carbs should be the equivalent of a Rubik’s Cube, and protein should be the size of a deck of cards). A suggested grocery list is: (Proteins): Boneless/skinless chicken breast, turkey, turkey bacon, easy to pour egg whites in cartons, cans of white tuna in water, wild salmon, low fat cottage

cheese and yogurt, protein powder for shakes (great tasting flavors of Jay Robb whey and egg white protein are available in individual packets or jars at Whole Foods Market); (Low Glycemic Carbs): Plain flavored oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes, Ezekiel breads, quinoa; (Fibrous Carbs): Spinach, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, Romaine lettuce; (Fruits): Apples, pears, strawberries; (Fats): Egg yolks, avocado, almond butter, flaxseed oil, olive oil Drinks, condiments and desserts that are also good choices for your list include Crystal Light, Arizona diet teas, Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate Fat Free with Calcium Hot Cocoa Mix, General Foods International Coffee Sugar Free French Vanilla Cafe Coffee Drink Mix, Starbucks iced grande Café Americano with Splenda, Walden Farms no calorie dressings, sugar free Smucker’s jelly, balsamic vinegar, mustard, salsa, sugar free Jello and popsicles, Skinny Cow low fat fudge bars. Preparing meals and snacks frequently throughout the day can take a little extra time and planning. But it’s worth it to eat more – cheat less and ultimately reach or maintain weight loss goals.

The Power of WOM’ BY DEAN NEIGER Last fall I traveled to Israel for the wedding of a close friend. Going away for a week and leaving my business behind required a lot of preparation, and there just wasn’t enough time to do everything, like getting a haircut. As risky as it can be using a new hair stylist for the first time – especially a couple of days before a big event, and in another country – I figured the haircut could wait until I arrived in Israel. As I landed in Ben Gurion airport, my natural instinct was to ask for recommendations from some of the people I knew in the area. The day before the wedding, I ended up going to a hair stylist 30 minutes away from my hotel. Why go so far when there were three salons within one block of the hotel? The answer is simple – WOM, or word of mouth. When it comes to the service industry, nothing works as well as the power of WOM. It’s the best form of marketing because it’s free, it’s credible and it’s powerful. But beware, WOM is a double-edged sword: it can break a business as fast as it can make one. Think about it, how many friends do you tell when you’ve had a good experience at a restaurant? One or two, maybe? Now how many do you tell when you’ve had a terrible dining experience? Anyone you come across that week. So how can you leverage the power of WOM? My experience tells me that the answer is as simple as providing outstanding customer service. That means going

above and beyond what your customer expects. As owner of Dryeco Green Cleaners, I realize that being eco-friendly and providing free pick-up and delivery in the tri-county area are competitive advantages for us. But while this may get people in the door the first time, only excellent customer service will bring them back as loyal, repeat customers. `Little things can make a big difference. For instance, new customers receive a personalized laundry bag with their name printed on it. After they sign up for a pickup on our website (www.dryeco.com), a customer service representative calls them to confirm that their preferences are all set, and to ensure that all went well. If a garment comes in with any damage, we call the customer to find out if they’d like us to fix it or process it as is. And the list goes on. It’s the personal attention we give to each and every customer that keeps them coming back to Dryeco again and again. Despite the recession and numerous local dry cleaners closing down, Dryeco Green Cleaners has experienced continued growth year after year. And an astonishing 90% of all our new customers have come to us through the power of WOM. So remember: good customer service may help you keep your clients, but excellent customer service will convert them into eager WOM-bassadors for your business. Audi A5 Cabriolet is a ragtop with style and performance Ron Beasley LET’S TALK CARS It’s difficult to find a good ragtop these days, what with all the new retractable hardtop technology available. But, if you are in the market for a soft-top convertible, check out the Audi A5 Cabriolet and sister sport model S5 Cabriolet. The 2011 Audi A5/S5 Cabriolets are really quite special automobiles because they continue the tradition of carefree driving with the joy of a soft top. And, with an overall length of 182.1 inches, they have an exceptionally roomy interior, even in the back seats, and with the same sophistication as their hardtop counterparts. However, they incorporate a power folding multi-layer acoustic soft top capable of retracting in 17 seconds, even while the car is moving at speeds up to 31 mph. The A5 (our test vehicle) has a refined

suspension developed from Audi’s extensive racing experience and it delivers a ride that is both comfortable and capable, with superb handling and razor-sharp response. It has a low and muscular look, with a high shoulder line and a steeply raked windshield. The Audi singleframe grille dominates the front, while available LED taillights distinguish the rear. With the soft top raised, the A5 Cabriolet maintains its coupe look, while lowering it turns it into another vehicle altogether. The A5 has an ergonomic interior designed around driver and passenger comfort, with high-quality leather and rich materials assembled to yield a luxurious cabin environment. Comfortable sport seats provide ample support and a driver-oriented center console holds a beautifully designed interface, as well as Audi’s thirdgeneration MMI system. The optional seven-inch MMI screen is positioned high on the dash for easy reading and to minimize the amount of time spent looking away from the road. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard and the gauges are well designed and easy-

‘Laddering’ investments to maximize interest yield BY MICHAEL J. WELCH, SR.

Interest rates are low and maximizing interest income should be of the utmost importance to you and your family. Laddering of safe, secure investments is a fairly simple, time-proven method of bringing structure to investing and reaping the greatest yield. The current economy, with it’s prognostications for the future, make this maximization goal all the more important. Most pundits agree that the interest rate scenario in the United States is going to stay at current levels through 2011. We’re in an extremely mixed-signal economy, but we still find the indicators yield more favorable than non-favorable signs. Of course, leading the charge atop the undesirable issues list are housing values and unemployment, with no rapid resolve to either one. On the plus side, economic expansion in 2010 was 2.8 percent, which was less than anticipated, but much better than 2009 which experienced shrinkage of 2.6 percent. Also a positive sign, consumer confidence continues to increase with each passing month. As consumer spending accounts for approximately 70 percent of the United States economy, this optimism is wellreceived. Laddering of investments maximizes yield by utilizing rising rates commensurate with rising terms. A minimal amount of funds should always remain in an emergency regular savings account for unexpected expenses and “piece of mind. The next level of savings is the “rainy day fund which resides in a Money Market Investment Account and receives a steppedup rate of return. Next the balance of

MONEY MATTERS investible funds should be invested at intervals such as 90 days, 6 months, 1 year, 2 year, 3 year and 5 year certificates of deposit. The important challenge is to decide what funds are going to be needed for certain goals and activities in the future and then putting a time frame to each. As the old adage goes, “Failing to Plan is Planning to Failâ€? so this exercise is beneficial on many levels. As an example, let’s say the available, longer term investable funds equal $20,000.00. Initially, $2,000.00 is needed in about three months to pay for the “same as cash, no payments until‌â€? purchase of an appliance. Next, the fall university tuition payment of $3,000 is due in approximately six months. Continuing forward, a planned new auto purchase is set for one year out and the desired down payment amount is $5,000. The remaining $10,000 is currently not planned for expenditure and available for longer term investing. On the conservative side, $7,000 can go for three years and $3,000 for 5 years. With each extended investment period the interest rate garnered is higher. A little bit of planning leads to favorable yields and maximization of interest income. Granted this is certainly the simplistic side of investing and not meant for retirement or “riskierâ€? high yield portfolio undertakings. But, for a safe investment alternative this works and as rates get back to normal levels in the future, this process will provide an even more advantageous outcome.
