With hurricane season just around the corner, preparedness, emergency management and avoiding complacency were timely topics of an Aventura Marketing Council Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon co-hosted by Associa /Association Services of Florida and Restoration USA. AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman, helped welcome business and community leaders gathered at Christine Lee’s at Gulfstream Park for the proactive event featuring Chuck Lanza, Director of Broward County Emergency Management; the legendary Max Mayfield, WPLG-TV hurricane specialist and former National Hurricane Center Director; Curt Sommerhoff, Director of Miami-Dade County Emergency Management; and Chief Dan Sullivan, from Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue. Lanza emphasized, “We want to provide you with the best information so you can be prepared for hurricane season [June 1 through Nov. 30]. We’re always optimistic – but have to be ready for worst-case scenarios. Plan ahead to have enough supplies to last at least three days - and if you live in a coastal area, heed evacuation orders.” Discussing this year’s above-average storm forecast, Mayfield said, “Dr. William Gray is predicting eighteen named storms,

nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes. It’s tough to get people thinking about hurricanes when the weather is so nice, but it just takes one to make for a bad year and we need to be prepared - no matter what the forecasts are.” Sommerhoff reiterated the importance of understanding that emergency managers determine evacuation zones based on the threat of dangerous storm surge levels. “Destruction and flooding can occur in lowlying areas as much as ten to fifteen miles inland,” he said. Chief Sullivan advised, “Stay informed way beCurt Sommerhoff; Max Mayfield; Sydney Sandoval and Chris fore an event, get your McShane, Restoration USA; Chuck Lanza; Chief Dan Sullivan personal plan ready, learn
how to prepare your home or business - and help your neighbors.” Association Services of Florida CEO Jeff Ulm encouraged condo association leaders and the community at-large to obtain a copy of their helpful 2013 Hurricane Guide. “The subject of emergency management is very important to ASF, specializing in managing developer and commercial properties, upscale condos and HOAs in the tri-county area,” Ulm said. “ASF is a member company of Associa, regarded as the largest community association management firm in the U.S., with offices across the nation, Canada and Mexico. Truly a local company with national power, ASF is uniquely positioned to provide superior service to our clients.” On behalf of Restoration USA founded by James Cohen, partner/general counsel See HURRICANE READY - OR NOT, page 4 Photography by Andrew Goldstein

Evian 1938: ‘The Jewish Trail of Tears’
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS The Nazi annexation of Austria on March 12, 1938 “signaled to the world that Jews could no longer survive within the German community.” To help resolve the immigration crisis, President FDR initiated the Evian Conference held in France during July 1938 and attended by thirty two nations. The invitation contained unusual wording, “Participating nations would not have to modify their respective immigration laws and quotas and any financial cost would be borne by private relief organizations.” The Jews of Germany and Austria hoped that this conference “would provide them with a safe haven.” Hitler, anxious to get rid of the Jews, stated, “If the other nations would take the Jews, I would help them leave, provided they surrender their assets and means of subsistence.” Jewish organizations offered financial assistance to the persecuted Jews. Although sympathetic to the plight of the Jewish refugees, FDR was also aware of anti-Semitism, the Depression with over 20% unemployment
and a large percentage of Americans opposed enlarging the immigration quota. Concerned over the Arabs, the British avoided any discussion of Palestine as a destination place for the Jews, despite the 1917 Balfour Declaration. Every delegation, with one exception, offered sympathy and numerous excuses to justify their refusal to admit the Jews. The sole exception was the Dominican Republic. The Evian Conference turned out to be a dismal failure. According to author Dennis Ross Laffer, although FDR received praise for calling for the conference, the refusal of the United Kingdom and the U.S. to alter their immigration laws and quotas led to “no effective help for the refugees” by the other nations. The result was the Jews had no escape and were ultimately subject to Hitler’s “Final Solution.” According Laffer, “It can be argued that the Evian disappointment encouraged the Nazis to carry out Kristallnacht (Crystal Night – the shattered glass of Jewish homes and shops) when nearly 100 Jews were murdered, synagogues burned and 30,000 were sent to concentration camps. It was not a coincidence that Chrystal Night occurred only four months after the conclusion of the Evian Conference.” Evian left a “Jewish Trail of Tears.”

Around d Town n in n Aventura Residence Inn-Aventura hosts ‘Soldier Ride’ to salute the Wounded Warriors Do you want to be inspired? Then follow the journey of our US Armed Forces "wounded warriors"...those severely injured in the war on terror as they recently rode their specially-adapted equipment to cycle from Aventura to Key West. Dubbed the "Soldier Ride," this year's group of 30 men and women were riding their bikes to raise public awareness and funds for the Wounded Warrior Project services and programs. The Wounded Warrior Project began when several individuals took small, inspired actions to help others in need. One night while watching the evening news, veterans and brothers were moved by stories of the first wounded service members
returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq. Their goal was to provide tangible support for the severely wounded - helping them on the road to physical and mental health. The Soldier Ride was created to provide rehabilitative cycling events for severely injured service members. For many of these combat-wounded veterans, the program offers a way to return to an active lifestyle. The program also offers wounded warriors a chance to get on a bike and prove to themselves, “I can still do this.'' For the sixth consecutive year, one of Turnberry Associates' flagship properties, the Residence Inn by Marriott at the Aventura Mall, hosted the group while the Aventura Marketing Council rallied com-

Aventura Commissioners Billy Joel and Luz Weinberg were there to extend the city's best wishes and to recognize these American heroes for their service to our country. And students from the city’s school, ACES (Aventura City of Excellence School), were there with school team leaders, distributing goodies. Greg Presnol, General Manager for the Residence Inn noted, “On behalf of the Residence Inn by Marriott – Aventura Mall, it was once again our honor and pleasure to host the Wounded Warriors for the sixth straight year. We proudly support this annual event and greatly appreciate the
servicemen and women of our US military who protect this country and our freedoms. It is our pleasure to give back by supporting this event each year for those veterans who have served the country on our behalf.” Operations Manager Michelle Belton added, "Residence Inn's support of our Wounded Veterans is part of Turnberry's continued commitment to serving our community, and these soldiers have a very special place in our hearts." The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center/Sanford L. Ziff Campus, recently celebrated the State of Israel’s 65th Birthday that included a singing competition called I-Factor. A spin-off of “X-FACTOR” and the ever-popular “American Idol,” this second annual singing competition, created for kids grades 6-12, featured contestants who performed songs with an “Israel theme.” Each performer was paired with one of the judges prior to the final, for vocal coaching, rehearsing and expert guidance. The three finalists sang in front of this panel of judges for the coveted “I-FACTOR” title, and a chance to win an I-POD, along with all the notoriety and glory that comes with a contest of this caliber. The contestants performed in front of an audience of nearly 500 people, and were judged based on song choice, performance level and vocal talent. After all was “sang” and done, the winner of the competition and brand new I-POD was Liat Shuflita, a 9th grader from American Heritage High School who performed her rendition of “Eli Eli,” a prayer that all good and beautiful things never end. “This was one of the most exciting and thrilling things that has ever happened to me,” explained Liat. “I hope to be on Broadway someday, and winning contests like this, will help get me there!” Second Place winner, 14 year-old Donna

A community prepared to weather any financial storm Unique in many ways, Aventura Lakes is a large gated community comprised of 419 single-family homes. In fact, it has the distinction of being one of the only such properties of its kind in Aventura, a city renowned for its vertical lifestyle offerings. As any large community might, its residents hail from all walks of life. “Aventura Lakes is a special gem. We have a diverse resident base of families, retirees, snowbirds and fulltime residents,” said Adam Pollock, President of the Board of Directors of Aventura Lakes. “This cross section is reflective of an international reputation of desirability, largely based on the community’s ability to maintain its high standards.” As expected from a planned community with this scope and breadth, Aventura Lakes offers a host of amenities, including multiple pools and hot tubs, a two-story state-of-the-art gym and teen and toddler rooms. The board and management encourage a close-knit community and have turned common areas into a social hub that encourages friends and neighbors to come together. Going “green” is another way the community distinguishes itself. Aventura Lakes was recently presented with a 2013 Aventura “GO GREEN” Award, bestowed on communities that exemplify a commitment to environmental sustainability. Maintaining the preserve that borders the east side of the community is a top priority. Residents band together to recycle and are serious about sustainability and other environmental concerns. All of these amenities and initiatives from Aventura Lakes’ leadership have
paid off. When the real estate bubble burst in 2008, Aventura Lakes’ homes experienced a drop in value that was significantly less than what was reflected by the market as a whole. Pollock claims that one of the reasons behind this is the strong demand for the kind of security and conveniences afforded by the community’s location. Foreign buyers from Venezuela, Brazil, Israel, Argentina and Colombia have always found South Florida attractive in general and Aventura Lakes in particular. “Our emphasis on providing the finest security services we can definitely pay off. Foreigners leaving unstable countries need to feel secure in their new home,” said Pollock. It’s this influx of financially secure owners looking to call a vibrant and diverse community home that has helped Aventura Lakes weather the storm. “Aventura Lakes has approximately $1.5 million in reserves and ran an almost $500,000 operating surplus since 2012,” said Pollock. “Here we shine.” Aventura Lakes is managed by The Continental Group. A Midsummer’s Insurance Nightmare BY RUSSEL LAZEGA, Attorney and Author
Summer’s almost here and it’s time to watch out for those late-afternoon downpours. On the right day, they’re actually quite nice to see -- a soft blanket of raindrops shimmering and spilling down over Maule Lake. But what if the deluge isn’t outside – it’s gushing down through the kitchen ceiling of your 15th floor Aventura Circle condo because unit 1602’s water heater broke or their air conditioning drain overflowed? Worse yet, what if unit 1602’s insurer says they won’t pay because this is just one of those freak events-- like volcano eruptions or speedy DMV lines that has no one to blame. “Our insured wasn’t negligent,” they insist. Sounds crazy, right? Logical minds would figure “Your pipe. Your problem.” But more often than you think, an insurer will say, “ Take us to court and prove it” not just that the water came down but that “our
insured negligently caused it.” We insurance pros call it “attrition”. Companies know that a certain percentage of people will give up and stop fighting if confronted with a defense. So what can you do? For starters -- prove it! Licensed professionals --like a good attorney or public adjuster-- know to ask for things like maintenance records on the equipment or additional sources of insurance. For example, your own property insurance may agree to pay and go after the other insurance company for reimbursement. At least they may if there’s an attorney after them. The important thing to remember is you don’t have to stand in your galoshes and take “no” for an answer. So remember, when rain starts coming down, after you get an umbrella, get a lawyer. Russel Lazega is an attorney who represents consumers and policy holders in disputes with their insurance companies. He is also the author of several of Florida’s leading legal textbooks on insurance law. He can be reached at Russ@lazegalaw.com.

What is Robotic Urological Surgery?
Dr. Akshay Bhandari MOUNT SINAI HEALTH CORNER Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive option for treating a number of urological conditions. It uses a sophisticated surgical robot, equipped with a high-resolution camera and miniature surgical instruments, which allows for complex procedures to be performed through tiny openings. The Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai Medical Center offers patients the state-of-the-art da Vinci surgical system. This system allows surgeons a three dimensional view inside the body and provides the precision and dexterity required to safely perform the most complex procedures, revolutionizing the way doctors perform surgery and the way patients recover from it. The hallmark of robotic surgery – and what provides the most benefit to patients – is the tiny incisions doctor make during surgery. Instead of the large incisions used in open surgery, robotic surgery uses a series of small, key-hole sized incisions. They inflict less trauma to the patient’s body, resulting in less blood loss, reduced rates of infection, fewer complications and less prominent scars. Robotic surgery also typically results in a shorter hospital stay than open surgery, and patients experience a significantly faster, less painful recovery. At Mount Sinai, our urological, surgical team of experts is expertly trained to provide the best possible surgical outcomes. Robotic urological surgery can be used to
treat a variety of conditions including prostate cancer, kidney cancer and bladder cancer, as well as for removal of the bladder and nerve-sparing prostatectomy, which is removal of the prostate gland before cancer can spread. It can also be used for a partial nephrectomy, which removes a cancerous tumor while leaving the healthy kidney in place. Robotic urological surgery isn’t only an option for men. Robotic female urological surgery can help women with pelvic floor prolapse, a condition in which the pelvic organs can drop out of place. It most commonly affects women whose pelvic muscles or tissues are weak or stretched from childbirth or previous surgery. Patients are typically discharged from the hospital less than 24 hours after surgery. Mount Sinai is proud to be one of the few institutions in South Florida that offers female urological services with a female urologist, Dr. Janice Santos. Lastly, patients can take comfort in knowing that Mount Sinai’s collaboration in urology with New York’s Columbia University is the only Ivy League collaboration of its kind in South Florida. This partnership provides patients access to the most advanced treatment options coupled with a world-class robotic urological surgical program. Dr. Akshay Bhandari is the Director of Robotic Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is also an assistant professor of urology with the Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai. Dr. Bhandari sees patients at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Mount Sinai Coral Gables, and Mount Sinai Aventura’s multispecialty physician office. For more information, or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Bhandari, call 305-674-CARE (2273) or visit msmc.com.

Mitsubishi i-MiEV efficient and affordable plug-in
Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is an odd looking little car and I had my doubts that I would find very much to like about it. Much to my surprise, I came away from my few days of test driving it with a grudging respect for the plug-in electric vehicle. In fact, it may be the perfect option for short-hop, around-town commuting. With a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $29,125 for the base ES model before a federal tax credit of $7,500 and other state financial incentives, the Mitsubishi i (at about $6,075 less than other electric cars) is the most affordable mass-produced electric vehicle available in the United States. And, while you may argue that the design is less than eye-catching, it does allow for a surprisingly roomy cabin and excellent handling, stability and safety. It also is very low maintenance and the
“refueling” costs are low. With its 49 kW electric motor, 88-cell lithium-ion battery pack and onboard charger, the Mitsubishi i is rated by the EPA at 126 mpg equivalency in city driving and 99 mpg on the highway, equivalent to a 62-mile range. It takes about 22 hours to fully re-charge the batteries using a standard outlet, but just seven hours if you have a dedicated 240v Level 2 EVSE charger, and an 80 percent charge takes less than 30 minutes at a Level 3 quick charging station. The batteries are housed in a waterproof stainless-steel safety cell and fortified platform beneath the rear seat. That platform is based on Mitsubishi’s innovative RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution body) energy-absorbing safety technology and is designed to protect the batteries in the event of a crash. The Mitsubishi i-MiEV already has a track record, having received excellent crash test ratings from numerous governmental safety and regulatory agencies around the world. Following its successful launch in Japan, the i-MiEV entered the Hong Kong and Australian markets in 2010, then Germany and the United Kingdom in 2011. It is now

available in many countries across Europe and more than 10,000 units have been sold. In some European markets, a rebadged iMiEV is available from French auto manufacturers Citroën (C-ZERO) and Peugeot (iOn). The next-generation U.S. version of the i-MiEV is even roomier than the original and has improved safety features, thanks to a 4.3-inch wider track and redesigned front and rear bumpers, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) to warn pedestrians of the approaching EV. Standard equipment includes a four-
speaker, 100-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3/WMA playback capability; Electric Power Steering; air conditioning; a vehicle security and immobilizer anti-theft system; advanced airbag system; fourwheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control Logic (TCL). Moody’s upgrades Mount Are you a Business Champion? Sinai Medical Center BY PETE DE LA TORRE
Moody’s Investors Service has upgraded its investment grade ratings assigned to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach from stable to positive. The rating outlook reflects a multi-year track record of improved financial performance and continues to reinforce the medical center’s strong image as a healthcare leader. The upgrade follows a fundamentally improved operating profile with measurable volume capture in cardiac services, including cardiac surgery procedures. The Mount Sinai Heart Institute, a partnership with New York’s prestigious Columbia University, continues to be a statewide leader in cardiovascular services providing patients the most active valve program in South Florida, as well as the best heart attack survival rate in the state. Mount Sinai has also concentrated its efforts in growing other key services lines, such as neuroscience, oncology and orthopaedics. Furthermore, the organization’s diversified portfolio of services includes satellite offices located in Aventura, Hialeah, Coral Gables and Key Biscayne with increased outpatient presence in those markets. Despite the challenging healthcare economic environment, Mount Sinai increased

its operating cash flow to over $50 million in each of the last three fiscal years generating positive operating income and controlled expenses. The medical center’s cash on hand increased from 137 days to 179 days, or $220 million, in 2012 due to well-executed operational initiatives and revenue management. The ratings upgrade reflects Moody’s expectation that continued revenue and expense initiatives will result in solid maintenance of current operating margins and further strengthening of Mount Sinai’s operating performance. Today’s fast paced business world demands that we be at our best all the time. Our challenge is to fully maximize the knowledge and skill sets we’ve learned through the years to be competitive. There is an enormous need to recharge ourselves every day. We need to be like a speed boat able to shift and adjust our course swiftly to a fast and changing market, as opposed to a large cruise ship that needs to slow down just to make a small change of direction. The question then becomes how to do this. My company, The Renatus Group, LLC, specializes in assisting professionals to re-invent themselves through a new dynamic training model that combines time tested methods with modern rules of business development. Our Signature Programs have been designed to work with organizations and individuals that are serious about taking their business to new levels of success. Just recently we introduced our latest workshop called “Business Champion Boot Camp” An intense half day session that concentrates on 4 key areas; Doing it Now...13 weeks to breakthrough; How to create the results you’re looking for through intense focus, commitment and accountability. Relentless Marketing; Learn the importance of consistent marketing activities that will attract the right clients for you. Honor your Process; A direct approach utilizing a pre-determined discovery process to assess the true needs of your
prospective client. Stay in the Trenches; Understanding the keys to long term relationship management. Any one that’s been in the business world the last few years has learned through formal training and experience, certain skill sets that they use in their daily business activities. Not only do we need to implement this knowledge consistently, but adopt the attitude of ongoing learning understanding that we must keep ourselves fresh and updated in our chosen field. Imagine going to a doctor who graduated from medical school 20 years ago but hasn’t lifted a finger to update their knowledge. Question, would you visit that doctor for your medical needs? Of course not! The same thing is true about us as business professionals. If we’re not keeping up to date and continually learning, what value are we really bringing to our current and future clients? Our intent at The Renatus Group is to work with those who embrace lifelong learning and are serious about expanding and accelerating their business success. As a result of an overwhelming, positive response, we are thrilled to announce that we will facilitate our second Business Champion Boot Camp on Friday morning June 21st, 2013. The workshop will be held again at the Intercontinental Hotel at Doral Miami 2505 N.W. 87th Ave. Miami, FL. 33172. Check-in and breakfast will be at 7:30am with the program running from 8:00am to 12:30pm. Gulfstream renovations for summer racing Gulfstream Park recently announced its $1 million capital improvements project on its main track is more than 50 percent completed. Ranger Construction, the company that installed the main track and turf course is installing a concrete gutter measuring 5,600 linear feet to strengthen the existing drainage system. "We're told by the engineers that we will have one of the fastest drying tracks in North America and the track will dry evenly," said Gulfstream President Tim Ritvo. "We're expected to have some rain this week, but we're optimistic the project will be completed by the end of May and de-
spite the work being done, Thoroughbred training has not been disrupted." Along with the new gutter, Gulfstream is also renovating its turf course in preparation for summer racing, which will begin its first season on July 1st. The course has been verticut, is currently undergoing aeration and the fertilization program that's being undertaken will have the course ready by the start of summer racing. Gulfstream Park is a Stronach Group company, North America’s leading Thoroughbred racetrack owner/operator. For more information, call 954-454-7000 or visit www.gulfstreampark.com.
