Dealing with Disappearing Acts
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING There are two kinds of disappearing acts. In one, the person, place or thing dies and ceases to exist. In the other disappearing act the person place or thing ceases to be visible. All kinds of people and places disappear. In some cases they still exist but they are no longer visible or available to you in your world. Friends and the important people in your life may move away or retire. The people you depend on for certain services such as bankers, doctors, pastors, waiters, barbers, beauticians and numerous other support people that make your life easier and better may no longer be available to help you. Stores, restaurants and banks close. Your favorite things and your favorite products may be discontinued. Things vanish overnight. Here one day and gone the next. Often, you have no indication or warning. Often you do not even
have the opportunity to say good-bye. There is no sign to let you know that changes are coming. If you knew you would be able to prepare for the loss. Because the loss is so sudden, it is more difficult to incorporate into your mental, emotional and psychological schema. The shock, sadness and sense of loss you feel when a favorite place or person ceases to exist or becomes inaccessible to you may seem disproportionate but human beings need to feel that they can count on some people and things in their life. The constant losses create feelings of insecurity. The temporary nature of everything creates anxiety. There is no one and nothing you can rely on. If someone or something goes away maybe love will go away. You are in a constant state of micro-grieving. One way to cope is to realize that nothing is permanent in the Universe by design. Few things come with a lifetime guarantee. Always try to say good-bye. Enjoy and treasure what you have while you have it. Be appreciative of everyone and everything you have now. Express your appreciation frequently. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

“Don’t be “Vein” – Get a leg up on gorgeous gams for swimsuit season Dr. Adam Gropper opens North Beach Vascular & Aesthetics, a state-of-the art treatment center addressing venous disorders Nestled off Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura, North Beach Vascular & Aesthetics offers some of the area’s most cutting edge medical and cosmetic treatments for vascular disorders under the care of Dr. Adam Gropper, who also serves as Chief of Radiology at the Jackson Health System Community Hospitals and President of North Beach Radiology Associates. Dr. Gropper launched the new Center to help educate and treat patients suffering from vein disease such as varicose and spider veins; conditions affecting almost 80 million adults. Treatments include traditional endovenous laser ablation, sclerotherapy and microphlebectomy in addition to the newest, innovative treatments on the market such as mechanical-chemical ablation using the ClariVein catheter and the latest in sclerotherapy medications, Asclera, for spider veins. North Beach Vascular & Aesthetics is the only treatment center currently using the ClariVein device in the Miami area. Asclera’s availability is also limited in the area due to its increased cost, however many educated healthcare consumers are demanding it. In addition to providing some of the most advanced, minimally invasive treatments available, North Beach Vascular & Aesthetics prides itself on its patient-friendly atmosphere.
“Over the years, I have performed thousands of procedures on diseased arteries and veins in hospitals, but I have wanted to create an atmosphere where both the serious medical issues of venous insufficiency and the Dr. Adam Gropper aesthetic complica––––––––––––––– tions could be treated in a private, peaceful environment,” explains Dr. Gropper. Unlike a hospital environment, North Beach Vascular & Aesthetics was designed to resemble a beautiful medi-spa, with warm hues of green and brown, natural stone and nature-inspired artwork. The interior design evokes an oasis of calmness where patients can comfortably explore treatment options that balance their medical and aesthetic needs. The Center, which was recently featured on NBC and CBS news, is ideally located between Aventura and Bal Harbor at 15400 Biscayne Boulevard, Suite 103. Mount Sinai hosts 9th Annual International Alzheimer’s Symposium Medical experts from around the world recently gathered at The Eden Roc Hotel to discuss the latest breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s Disease treatment and diagnosis at the 9th annual Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) Symposium hosted by Mount Sinai Medical Center. The annual symposium aims to provide a forum for new information and in-depth discussions about advances in research related to the clinical diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). This year’s symposium emphasized the early stages of AD and presented results from several longitudinal and cross-sectional studies that explored risk factors, diagnosis and progression of Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Dr. Ranjan Duara, Director of The Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders and host of the event, stresses the importance of early diagnosis of the disease. “Part of our discussions at this symposium is about determining how doctors can detect the disease in its earliest stages, just like we detect high cholesterol in people’s blood and start treating high cholesterol
Dr. David Lowenstein of The Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease addresses the audience in a presentation titled “When is Cognitive Aging Considered Abnormal?”
whether or not patients have any symptoms. The same goes for treating Alzheimer’s early so we can prevent the disease from escalating.” International experts from the United States, Australia, France, England, Canada, and Netherlands gave presentations on various topics related to Alzheimer’s diagnosis,
treatment and research. This year’s keynote speakers were Dr. Christopher Rowe, Director of Medicine from the University of Melbourne, Australia whose presentation was titled “Early Diagnosis of AD – Now and the Future”, and Dr. Bruno Dubois, Professor at the Federation de Neurologie Hospital de la
Salpetriere in Paris, France whose presentation was titled “Rationale for Prodromal and Preclinical AD Criteria”. Doctors also participated and exchanged ideas in three minisymposiums: Risk Factor for Progression from Normal Aging to MCI and Dementia; Studies in Preclinical AD: Diagnosis and Progression; and Studies in Prodromal AD: Diagnosis and Risk for Progression. Unless ways are found to prevent Alzheimer’s or delay its onset, it is projected that 13 million people in the U.S. will have Alzheimer’s Disease by 2050. Since the development of criteria for AD twenty-five years ago, major advances in our understanding of the biology and early clinical features of AD have led to improvement in clinical assessments which have enabled clinicians to diagnose an earlier stage of the illness, mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The Mount Sinai Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders along with Dr. Duara will continue to host this annual symposium so physicians from all over the world will have a forum to present research and discuss ideas that can provide a greater understanding of the clinical diagnosis, progression and treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease.

‘Reality TV’ right here in Aventura
Bari Auerbach LIFE IN THE CITY Reality TV shows are all the rage – and many could be filmed right here in Aventura where true to life dramas take center stage every day! Survivor: …Stranded on Biscayne Boulevard at rush hour with only a Mercedes for shelter, bottles of Vitamin Water and Rolex watches reminding road warriors how late they’re going to be for personal training sessions at their exclusive gyms and spas. Who will survive the traffic with dignity and grace? Only the small minority of motorists who can say Yes! when asked:“So you think you can drive?” True Beauty…There are so many beautiful people in the city, the competition would be fierce – but since the show’s title is “True Beauty” that could potentially disqualify a lot of cosmetically enhanced contenders. Then again, if Botox, collagen, eye lifts, tummy tucks, lipo and implants were cause
for elimination, there might not be anyone left to compete! Wife Swap…If a show featured the adventures of real housewives of Aventura trading places - it would probably be really boring! After all, how much different could life be at luxury condos lining Country Club Drive? The ratings would probably be a whole lot better if the show was changed to “Pet Swap” and ladies with tiny dogs dressed in matching outfits had to try squeezing Dobermans into their designer handbags! Extreme Home Makeover…This is probably the only show that couldn’t be set here since it’s even a Jersey Shore thing that everyone agrees coming home to Aventura is already such a “rewarding reality!” For eBay: The must have Aventura souvenirs that may one day have great historical and monetary value are programs from the debut show at the city’s new Arts & Cultural Center; one of the first handbags sold at the mall’s new Louis Vuitton store; and of course, a picture postcard of you smiling in front of the city’s entry feature on Aventura Boulevard proudly proclaiming: “Wish You Were Here!”

At www.citibank.com, you can view “Citibank Aspects” featuring Citibank industry and market experts sharing their viewpoints on domestic and international issues of interest to mid-size businesses. Sharing her viewpoints on the merits of supporting businesses, Heyman alluded to her “Mom and Pop Small Business Grant Program,” noting, “Businesses are the foundation of the community. We have an obligation to help sustain and patronize small businesses.” Heyman also encouraged voting in favor of the proposed Miami-Dade County charter amendment advocating the creation of a Charter Review Committee that by two-thirds vote could place proposed charter changes on the ballot during presidential election years; and to take a close look at the spectrum of candidates running in special election on May 24. “Consider the candidates’ skills as if your lifestyle depends on it - everything from the quality of your neighborhood, transportation services and water you drink - to the assistance your business gets is at stake.” Expressing support for Jackson Memorial Hospital, Heyman said, “Jackson has got to stay – it’s a responsibility that we maintain healthcare for everyone. “She also spoke about the importance of moving forward with an FEC railway corridor and attempting to balance the county budget in “difficult times.” In summation, Heyman emphasized, “Now’s the time to pool your strengths and respective successes to step up, take it to the county level and say, ‘We have a concern about particular issues.’ Get out there, take hold of what you think is important for the community and get it done. You can all be a source of information and put your perspectives out there.”

North Dade Justice Center Continued from page 1 –––––– and Judge Sheldon Schwartz. Chief Judge Joel Brown noted, “Thanks to all of the judges and their staff here at the North Dade Justice Center for organizing Law Day - a long-standing tradition. It’s important to recognize the importance of the legal system – truly the foundation of our country. We’re a nation of laws and for that to remain, we need a solid legal system that will protect everyone’s individual rights.” The Law Day event commenced with an invocation by Steven W. Davis, president of the Dade County Bar Association; the United States SOUTHERN COMMAND Color Guard presentation; Natalia Sulca singing the National Anthem; and the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Bailiffs of the North Dade Justice Center. Students attending the Law Day event were especially enlightened by remarks made by Judge Cooke who emphasized, “What John Adams did hundreds of years ago is an important lesson in advocacy, tolerance and the rule of law that serves us very well today. Shortly before Adams’ death, he was asked what decision was the most important of his career and he said, ‘One of the best pieces of service I ever rendered to my country was representing British soldiers charged in the Boston Massacre.’ “Today, lawyers representing the ‘unpopular’ prove the core of this country’s constitutional values remains intact. You are presumed innocent and the prosecution has to prove you’re guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. You have a right to trial by jury, to confront your accusers in open court and to see the evidence against you. In this country, our courts are the great leveler where all men are created equal.” During Law Day, winners of the North Dade Bar Association’s Law Day essay contest for students were announced. First place winner Briana Hawryluk of David Lawrence, Jr. K-8 Center wrote her essay on the topic of John Adams’ belief in the rule of law that people are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Ruling Law Day 2011“highly successful,” North Dade Justice Center judges concurred, “This year’s Law Day enabled us to reach out once again and further educate our community about the judicial system…especially students, who are the future of our country.” Special thanks for supporting Law Day was expressed to public officials, organizations and participants including event sponsors: Sabadell United Bank; Higer Lichter & Givner, LLP; Law Office of Russel Lazega; Miami-Dade Florida Association for Women Lawyers; Cuban American Bar Association; Haitian Lawyers Association; North Dade Bar Association; Aventura Marketing Council, Katz & Katz, PA; and Rosenfield Stein Batta, PA.

It’s smooth and powerful, and for the most part it drives and handles much the same as a gasoline-powered car. Certainly, it’s a lot quieter. In fact, the fivedoor, four-passenger Volt hardly makes any noise at all when idling or accelerating. Press the pedal and it accelerates quietly and instantaneously, and it’s surprisingly fast. It has an onboard twocycle gasoline engine that powers a generator and re-charges the battery as you drive. So, although the battery range on a full charge is only about 40 miles, the generator kicks in seamlessly when the battery gets low and recharges it, giving you a range of about 379 miles on a fully charged battery and a full tank of gas. And, if you fill up the gas tank, you can run for another 379 miles. Keep
refilling the gas tank and you could drive across country in a Volt. Chevy says the Volt running strictly on gasoline gets 37 mpg, while an all-electric operation delivers the equivalent of 93 mpg. There’s an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on the 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It’s T-shaped, about 5.5-feet long, weighs 435 pounds and fits neatly under the rear seat and center shaft. Theoretically, after eight years you could swap out the battery and continue driving your Volt. But continuing improvements in technology probably dictate that you trade in your old Volt on a new one when the battery finally dies. Since 2007, GM engineers have completed more than a million miles and four million hours of testing of Volt battery packs, as well as each pack’s nine modules and 288 cells. GM says the development, validation and test teams have met thousands of specifications and validated each of the Volt battery’s 161 components, 95 percent of which GM designed and engineered. GM engineers have made extensive use of high-strength steel and a full suite of the latest vehicle safety technologies to give the driver and passengers adequate protection in the event of a crash. They also have developed such new technologies as configurable

displays, OnStar Mylink Mobile App for Chevrolet and the <www.MyVolt.com> website to enhance the experience of owning the electric car. GM says that every major element of the Volt was designed and analyzed for efficiency, including the aerodynamic exterior, lightweight wheels, specially designed tires and the energy-saving premium stereo system. The Volt is offered in one very well-equipped standard trim level, along with two option
packages — a Premium Trim Package and a Rear Camera and Park Assist Package. Total price on the 2011 Chevrolet Volt is $41,000, including a $720 destination charge. A $7,500 federal tax credit is available. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Denise Rubin Talks Real Estate
Bang for your Buck
Denise Rubin REAL ESTATE How to fix up your house to get a payday when you sell. When upgrades are worth it and when they are a waste of money. Where to fix up? Put money to spruce up?! You ask yourself where to put your money. If you spend 5% you get up to 10% back. Here are the three beast and worst ways to spend your money. The number one best investment is a new front door. It only costs $1100 to $1200 and you get so much more back. It’s cheap and people immediately decide if the house is worth it or not by their first impression! Number 2 is a new garage door. You get 87% back if you spend $1290 you will get $1083 back. Especially if it is 50% of the front façade. Number three is to add a deck. Without one there is something missing. It is a visual extension of the inside space. People day dream about enjoying themselves and how they would love using it. A 10x30 deck will cost $10,000 and you get 75% back.

The worst ideas and poor choices to spend money that bring no bang for your buck. Number one is a home office remodel. It is expensive and often the idea is from the man of the house. It is very costly to build out and the equipment is also. The average home office will cost $28,000 and you get only $13,000. Worst of all, you lose a bedroom. Buyers shop by bedrooms. The second bad idea is a sunroom. It costs $75,000 to build and cool and you never use it. The third worst idea is a bathroom. It’s not worth it. It will cost $40,000, but if you just nip and tuck you can make it look good enough. So remember, first impressions are so very important. It’s like starting your day off right or wrong. I choose to workout at Equinox where I train with James and it jump starts my day with a good breakfast and a good frame of mind. The clothes you pick will send the right or wrong impression. Just like the way you feel when you approach what may possibly be your new home, your mind may be made up before you even step inside. Former U.S. Senator Graham’s novel chillingly close to reality
Come with the family to see the fun-filled film
BY DAVID KASS
Respected and trusted by leaders on both sides of the political aisle, former U.S. Senator Bob Graham of Florida chaired the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, was a presidential candidate with 18 years of service in the U.S. Senate, and a twoterm governor of Florida. Now, based on actual events, he has written a compelling political thriller, Keys to the Kingdom (Vanguard Press; June 2011; $25.99). With a story line that cuts chillingly close to true-life dealings, it raises penetrating questions and all-too-real alarming predictions. Sen. Graham will be in the Miami area on Friday, June 17, 8 p.m., at Books and Books, 265 Aragon Ave. in Coral Gables, and Saturday, June 18, 4 p.m., Books and Books Airport Store, Concourse D Gate D25. In the novel: Retired U.S. Senator John Billington, a co-chair of the 9/11 Congressional Inquiry Commission, sets off a firestorm of protest when he suggests in a New York Times op-ed that Saudi Arabia — aka “The Kingdom” — was behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Billington asks: Will Saudi Arabia assist in future attacks within the U.S., does the Kingdom have the bomb, and why is the administration engaged in a comprehensive, sustained cover-up to keep answers from the American people? Less than two weeks later, Billington is murdered — but not before slipping a detailed briefing to ex-Special Forces operative Tony Ramos, a street-smart Miami Cuban, proficient in Pashto and Arabic,

with a love of fine clothing that has tagged him “the Will Smith of State” at the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research. Soon Tony is on the road and on the run for his life, collaborating with Billington’s estranged, enticing and egotistical daughter, Laura, to solve her father’s murder and discover the hidden agendas that ominously threaten the security of America and the world. In a race against time, betrayals, and layers of deceit, Tony uncovers a shocking international conspiracy linking Saudi Arabia — the Kingdom — to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, in an investigation that spans Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Afghanistan. Targeted by an assassin and framed for murder, will he be able to honor the senator’s last wish and thwart al-Qaeda’s planned nuclear attacks, as they escalate toward a final massacre in the United States? In Keys to the Kingdom, Sen. Graham delivers a page-turner that sounds a warning and is thoroughly entertaining.

Treating Thyroid Problems with Acupuncture BY MARIA STELLATO & ADRIANA PEREZ
When functioning properly, the thyroid gland secretes just the right amount of thyroid hormone to regulate almost all the metabolic processes in your body. Too much or too little of these vital body chemicals and it can drastically influence energy levels, body weight and your mental health. With over 20 million Americans living with some form of thyroid disease, much attention has been given to the many ways that acupuncture and Oriental medicine can treat thyroid problems. The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland that sits in the front of the neck. It is responsible for energy, metabolism, hormone regulation, body weight and blood calcium levels. Thyroid disorders stem from either an overproduction (hyperthyroidism) or underproduction (hypothyroidism) of thyroid hormones. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can be diagnosed by testing the levels of thyroid hormones in your blood. Hormones secreted by the thyroid are measured, as
well as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), a chemical released by the pituitary gland that triggers hormone production in the thyroid. Some milder forms of hypothyroidism can also be detected by a consistently low basal body temperature. How can acupuncture help? Both Western and Eastern medicine offer various methods to restore thyroid hormone levels. Western treatments rely mainly on drugs and surgery while Eastern treatments aim to restore immune function as well as balance the production and release of thyroid hormones through a variety of approaches ranging from acupuncture and herbal remedies to lifestyle changes and special exercises. In the treatment to thyroid problems, acupuncture can be used to restore hormonal balance, regulate energy levels, smooth emotions and help manage sleep, emotions and menstrual problems. There are several powerful acupuncture points on the ear and the body that can be used to regulate the production of thyroid hormones. Treatments take all of your symptoms into account and are aimed at balancing the energy within the body to optimize health.

Susan G. Komen For the Cure Miami/Fort Lauderdale Affiliate recently announced that it raised more than $2 million to support the fight against breast cancer during the fiscal year ending in March. The moneys raised will fund 33 grants to a diverse group of non-profit healthcare organizations, public health agencies and community groups in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties that will further the Komen mission of eliminating breast cancer. This year the affiliate added six new organizations to its list of grantees. Numerous medically underserved individuals will be impacted by the grant dollars that will provide for mammograms and thousands more will be impacted by education and awareness programs. In accordance with Komen’s guidelines, 75 percent of the net dollars raised through local events, including the annual Race for the Cure, will stay in the community to fund breast cancer screenings, education
and treatment initiatives. This year more than $1 million will stay in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties. The remaining 25 percent will be pooled with Komen’s national efforts to fund research programs, which this year includes $55 million allocated for research grants at 56 institutions across the country and internationally. “There are many organizations in our local community that focus on breast health by educating the public, increasing access to services and spreading awareness of early detection,” said Bobbi Meyers, executive director of the foundation’s Miami/Fort Lauderdale Affiliate. “Each year our goal is to provide these organizations with the funding they need to meet their goals and contribute to our overall vision: a world without breast cancer.” The 2011 Miami/Fort Lauderdale Race For the Cure will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Bayfront Park. The keys to shopping at Sarah’s Tent
BY LEVI MEYER
If you haven’t tasted the prepared foods at Sarah’s Tent in The Shoppes at the Waterways, I have two words for you: “Moroccan Fish. Well, truth be told, I could never sum up the delicious foods offered at Sarah’s Tent Kosher Gourmet Food Market in two words. I could possibly use a series of words like “fresh, pull-apart whole wheat challah or “savory sweet and sour chicken or “sweet, bakery-fresh Rugelach or “scrumptious stuffed grape leaves or “terrific Thai pasta to describe just a few of the delicious prepared foods offered. I’ve worked in kitchens my whole life, from my mother’s kitchen to summer camp kitchens and even the kitchen on my base in the Israeli Defense Force. I love to cook, but I must sadly admit that the only cooking I’ve done since I started shopping at Sarah’s Tent is preheat the oven. I can’t help myself and you won’t be able to either. It’s really that good. To shop at Sarah’s Tent, there are some secrets to be shared. The place is full on Thursday night and Friday when the

kitchen seems to go into hyper drive to accommodate for the Shabbat rush of shoppers. So, here’s a little check list to get you started: A wise shopper always starts the shopping experience by visiting your “amigo at the pizza shop to order a large veggie pizza so it’s hot and ready when it’s time to check out. A wise shopper will preorder a deli or cheese platter for their next Miami Heat Playoff game or any other such event. A wise shopper will stock up to get through the week and be ready to refill the fridge on the following Thursday. A wise shopper will never neglect the bakery section, full of fresh rolls and pita. Finally, a wise shopper should flag down one of the store’s wine experts to learn about the best kosher wines on special that week. The grocery aisles are packed with tons of your favorite kosher and Israeli foods. The refrigerators are stocked full with cheeses and sweets like Emek Edam or Milkys (a personal favorite). Since Sarah’s Tent is a complete grocery store, I was even able to find all the necessary ingredients for home made sushi, including frozen imitation crab meat, seaweed sheets and ginger. full of Israeli and kosher treats like Bamba, Bissli and Pesek Zman, you will also find regular grocery store items on the shelves, such as Arizona Tea, Honest Tea and Terra chips. They even have hookah and hookah products available at the front of the store, near the checkout counters. Sarah’s Tent is not just another place for kosher eaters; it’s a must for everyone who loves Middle Eastern food. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and the store hours more convenient than most kosher grocery stores. Living in a large city, we are fortunate to have many kosher restaurants and grocery stores. I’ve been to many of them, and each one has its own charm and advantages. Many come and go, but year in and year out, Sarah’s Tent consistently proves itself to be among the best of the best in kosher variety, quality and service – not just in
Aventura, but in all of South Florida. If you have never been or haven’t visited in a while, I recommend putting Sarah’s Tent on your list of weekly shopping stops. Republicans, be careful what you crow about R. Kenneth Bluh KENNETH’S COMMENTARY Years ago, while visiting a friend of mine who owned a large mortgage banking firm in Coral Gables, I learned a great lesson. Sitting across his desk I asked him: “How’s business?” “Okay,” was his response. Knowing better, I said, “Allan, I know you are doing fabulously; you are setting the market on fire!” Allan looked at me and said, “Kenneth, see that little red mother bird perched on the top of the tree in the corner of the office — the one with its beak wide open? She was singing to the high heavens about her beautiful new baby chick when a hawk swooped down from the sky and ate her. The lesson: never brag too loud about your success or competition will swoop in and eat you alive!” Lesson well learned. Tea Party members, don’t brag too loud about your short-term success in winning seats in Washington and around the nation. You are disenfranchising Republicans who are conservative but not so far to the right as you. Your party is losing support. You are for-
getting the old principal of politics: Stay to the left or the right, your choice, and move carefully toward the center until you have sufficient votes to control the election. Then don’t crow about your success — how conservative, or liberal you are. Look at what just happened in Jacksonville — a conservative Republican stronghold in Florida. A Democrat walked off with the mayors’ race. Why? In my opinion, the Tea Party bragged too loud about how great the Republican Legislature, the ultra conservative legislature and the Tea Party darling Gov. Rick Scott, did during the last session in Tallahassee. Remember, there also are fiscal conservatives in the Democratic Party who support conserving the taxpayer’s dollar and controlling a runaway budget. We share a conservative approach to government. But, being to the right of Attila the Hun isn’t the way, in the long run, to win over a majority of the public. The recent Florida legislative session didn’t do the State of Florida too many favors. We let our school children down. In the long run we damaged the prospect of new corporations moving to Florida as they always are looking for communities that offer an educated youth. That, Florida isn’t producing. New Jersey, California and New York, with their high corporate taxes, retain the major corporations because of their quality of education.
VIEWPOINT Cutting corporate taxes, as we have discussed before, doesn’t create employment growth. Only one thing creates employment growth and that is an increased demand by the public, for more goods and services. With that growth in demand, employers both large and small must hire more employees to meet the increased demands of the buying public. Our legislature let the state down when it effectively did away with community growth oversight management. No longer must a company wishing to create a major development go to Tallahassee for review and approval. All growth management will be controlled on a county level. Just picture the next time a limestone mining company in northwest Miami-Dade wants to start blasting and mining a new field near a residential neighborhood. Just go to the county commission for approval? That simplified the process. Make a few campaign contributions and the permit will be issued. I think many voters in Jacksonville, including Republicans and conservative independent registered voters, looked at the legislative/governor giveaway to the insurance
industry and the prospects, no certainty, of another round of property insurance premium increases and said, “I think I will vote for a Democrat. Those Republicans have forgotten us and are only thinking about their campaign support from major corporations in Florida.” I don’t think the ultra conservative Republican Legislature and Gov. Scott are setting the stage for a Republican victory over President Obama in two years. I think they are setting the stage for a more “centrist” Republican move to the left — away from too right wing politics. Sometimes I think the Tea Party is more interested in making a point than they are in winning an election. They would rather give a seat to a Democrat then let a liberal Republican win an election.
