usiness and community leaders recently collaborated with judges from the North Dade Justice Center to present the annual Law Day celebration featuring keynote speaker Ervin Gonzalez, a noted trial attorney recently named one of the “Top 11 Attorneys in the Nation” by Lawyers Weekly USA. Judges overseeing Law Day 2013, themed “Realizing the Dream: Equality for All” included Associate Administrative Judge Linda Singer Stein, Judge Myriam Lehr, Judge Caryn C. Schwartz, Judge Charles K. Johnson, Judge Carlos Guzman, Judge Betty Capote and Judge Jason Dimitris. A special introduction was given for newly-elected Chief Judge Bertila Soto, the first CubanAmerican woman and Florida International University graduate to serve as Chief Judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit. Judge Capote noted, “Today, we reflect upon the work that remains to be done to eliminate discrimination, stop human trafficking and to rectify injustice. As the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, ‘An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’” Chief Judge Soto added, “Our court systems are invaluable - defending equality to ensure that the citizens of our great country are protected under the law.” Law Day continued with an invocation by

Mayors, Commissioners, police chiefs, city managers, city clerks and city attorneys joined community leaders and students from the Law Academies of Dr. Michael Krop Sr. High and Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Sr. High in the audience for this inspiring event. Taking the podium, Gonzalez emphasized, Judge Betty Capote, North Dade Justice Center and Detective “What distinguishes us Daniel Erben, City of Miami Beach; Captain Dwight Snyder and from every other country Chief Fred Maas, City of Sunny Isles Beach is that the U.S. justice
system really is ‘just.’ We can realize the dream of equality every single day. There are no handouts - no one gives you anything except opportunity and whatever you do with it is up to you.” Sharing inspiring stories about how his parents came to America from Cuba and “worked their tails off to succeed,” Gonzalez said he never gave up on his dream to attend college and law school. “I used to be a supermarket bag boy,” he said. “One day, a cute girl came in as I was scraping gum off the floor. I told her, ‘Someday, I’m going to be a lawyer.’ I believed it to be true because here in America we have the freedom to be who we want to be. Today I’m privileged to present cases before esteemed judges and jurors - and that cute girl I saw in the supermarket became my wife!” During Law Day, it was announced the See NORTH DADE JUSTICE CENTER, page 4 Photography by John Christie

Villa Dorada: A Community Reborn Built in 1972, Villa Dorada has the honor of being one of the first condominium communities built in what was then simply known as North Miami Beach’s Aventura area. The community spans over 16 acres and its nine buildings house a total of 360 units. Amenities include two swimming pools, recreation/game room, library, party room and card room. There is also a sauna, a playground and Wifi was recently made available in the community’s recreation room and large pool area. Unique in its layout, Villa Dorada possesses its own distinctive character that allows it to stand apart from neighboring communities, partly because of its beautifully landscaped grounds and large number of trees. In fact, residents can enjoy a walk through lush pathways which crisscross the property and run from approximately NE 202nd to 207th Streets. Villa Dorada is planning to add 31 guest spaces to the property - a definite added value to residents and guests. “We are excited to add parking to our community. Everyone knows that this is usually at a premium in most condominiums,” said Donna Vazquez, property manager for Villa Dorada Condominium Association. “I believe that our residents will have a renewed appreciation for living here once the parking lot is completed.”
But renovation plans don’t end there; Villa Dorada is adding new tile to its smaller pool. The community is also obtaining proposals for landscape walkway lighting and new lamp post lighting at its entrances – possibly to include new LED bulbs. Next year, its mail rooms will have new mailboxes and lighting as well. “Some of our residents have lived here for over 30 years and some are new owners,” said Vazquez. “But they will all experience and enjoy these much-needed improvements to Villa Dorada as we continue to beautify our property.” Villa Dorada is managed by The Continental Group. Manhattanhenge Message
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING There is a phenomenon in Manhattan called Manhattanhenge that occurs twice a year when the setting sun is perfectly aligned and clearly visible on all the streets bounded by the canyons of the city buildings. It is truly impressive and draws thousands of spectators. It is named after the famous 5000 year old megalithic monument in England called Stonehenge, which is a ring of standing stones with astronomical implications, that precisely matches the direction of the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset. There are no records to explain this extraordinary creation but, there are many speculations about its purpose and use. Regardless of its original purpose, its message is very important. It is a message about the intrinsic value of being perfectly aligned, within yourself and within the universe. When you are aligned things can flow to you and from you. Without alignment the things that you want or value
most, will be blocked by impediments and they will never reach you. Alignment between all aspects of your persona and your being will allow your personal powers and your powers of healing to flow freely. It is necessary to align your spiritual, mental and physical aspects. Your beliefs and actions must match and coincide. If they are not in accord you will experience conflict and other negative effects in your life. Alignment can be achieved in several ways. You can align yourself physically through the necessary medical means that are available to you. Yoga and chiropractic adjustments may also be appropriate. You can align yourself psychologically through psychological insight, meditation and adherence to the laws of the Universe. When you are psychologically aligned you can create and experience unparalleled success and happiness in your life. You can have the perfect relationship, the perfect job and the perfect love with peace and harmony. It took over 1000 years to complete this spectacular monument but it does not have to take you that long to get everything aligned in your own life. Start today. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305788-4864, Psychotherapy.a2z@gmail.com

Lyndon Johnson at Gettysburg
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS President Kennedy and his brother Bobby made a terrible error of misjudgment. They put Texas Senator Lyndon Johnson on the ticket as vice president solely because they needed Southern support to win the presidential election in 1960. Thereafter, the Kennedy’s disregarded Johnson, shunted him aside and avoided his opinions and assistance. Johnson became depressed, wary of his apparent uselessness, believing his political career was over. Every attempt by the Kennedy’s, however, to fulfill their pledges of civil rights for Negro’s met with opposition from Southern legislators who were devout segregationists. Johnson, who did not have an outstanding record on Civil Rights legislation, was asked to give a Memorial Day speech in 1963 at the cemetery in a ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. According to N.Y. Times writer David M. Shribman, “Johnson thought about race and was deeply affected by his experience as a young man teaching
Mexican-American children. He also thought deeply about Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” in which King wrote about his frustration with the pace of change for Negro rights. “This ‘Wait’ has almost always meant ‘Never.’” Johnson also reread Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address On Memorial Day, Johnson answered King’s plea for civil rights and made it clear that the time for “Patience” for Negro rights was over, stating: “One hundred years ago, the slave was freed. One hundred years later, the Negro remains in bondage to the color of his skin.” Six months later, Kennedy was assassinated; “Johnson became president and vowed to press ahead on civil rights.” When cautioned by his Southern congressional segregationists, Johnson responded, “What the hell is the presidency for!” His previous Gettysburg address had signaled the direction he would lead. Johnson used his remarkable persuasive skills to push through passage of legislation that was his crowning achievement the Civil Rights Act of 1964. According to Shribman, “1963 was a year rich in speeches (by Kennedy) but of all the signature speeches that year, it’s the one (by Johnson at Gettysburg) that has been all but forgotten that might have transformed the country the most.”

Breast Cancer Prevention Dr. Elisa Krill-Jackson
MOUNT SINAI HEALTH CORNER In the United States, one in eight women who live to the age of 80 will develop invasive breast cancer. There are risk factors that we cannot change, such as our age, family history, age of one's first menstruation or having dense breasts. However, there are steps we can take to modify factors that can lower individual risks of acquiring breast cancer. One of the biggest risk factors for breast cancer that women can modify is their weight. Overweight women have a higher risk of breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence than women who maintain a healthy weight. The relationship between extra weight and breast cancer may have to do with the estrogen that fat cells are known to produce, or with impaired metabolism from the elevated insulin and growth factor levels. Weight loss has been shown to decrease a woman's risk of breast cancer incidence and recurrence, especially with a low-fat diet and exercise. The foods we eat, or don't eat, may also be a factor in breast cancer. We know that in countries where the typical diet is lower in fat and meat, and more enriched in plantbased foods, breast cancer incidence is lower. Incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet may help modify your risk. Other factors known to increase the risk of breast cancer include smoking and drinking alcohol. Drinking three or more alcoholic drinks a week can increase breast cancer risk by 15 percent. That percentage
increases with increasing alcohol intake. Clearly, these are factors that are easily modifiable. Vitamin D, or lack of it, we are discovering can also play a role in the development of breast cancer. An essential nutrient for bone health, vitamin D is activated in the skin when exposed to sunlight. Low vitamin D levels have been linked to higher levels of breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence, while higher levels are seen as protective. As you age, your skin absorbs less vitamin D. This is also true for those with darker skin color. Sunscreen, which is highly recommended, can also block absorption. So how can we increase our vitamin D intake without increasing our exposure to the sun? We can do this through certain foods and daily supplements. The best foods that give a dose of vitamin D are fatty fish, such as salmon and herring. In addition to fatty food consumption to achieve that intake, it is also recommended that patients take a daily supplement with dinner or lunch. The Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center, Florida's first accredited breast cancer program, is proud to participate in groundbreaking clinical trials that aim at reducing the risk of breast cancer Ultimately, it is always recommended to discuss all your options – including screenings, prevention and treatment - with your doctor. Dr. Elisa Krill-Jackson is an oncologist at the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center who specializes in breast and ovarian cancer. She is also the director of Mount Sinai’s genetic testing program and a physician within the Mount Sinai Women’s Centered Care Program. Dr. Krill-Jackson sees patients at Mount Sinai in Miami Beach and Mount Sinai Aventura’s multi-specialty physician office. In the new book Buy Right, Eat Right, Feel Right by Biscayne Cove resident Herb Pogoda, he shares knowledge gained from over 46 years in the wholesale food industry about how to purchase foods frugally, wisely and above all – healthily. Heralded as “Your Indispensible Eating Companion,” the book is an essential guide to nutrition facts, buying fresh groceries, food storage, cooking ideas and often surprising information about the fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and other foods typically purchased and served daily. Herb explains his beloved wife of 65 years, Cecile, encouraged him to write Buy Right, Eat Right, Feel Right to especially help people who may be new to grocery shopping or cooking learn how to choose fresh, nutritious, healthy foods on a budget, without sacrificing quality. Herb gained his “inside food information” by operating companies providing food services to renowned restaurants, hotels and cruise lines as well as serving as an instructor and Quality Assurance Administrator. Now, he finds it very rewarding to help anyone who reads his book learn what foods to shop for, plus effective methods for optimal food preparation and safe storage. “When Cecile and I first got married, like most Americans, we had too much fat and sugar in our diet,” Herb explains. “Then Ce-
cile’s brother, Dr. Alan Lee Blackman, encouraged us to start eating more healthfully. Cecile began planning meals with fresh vegetables, fruits, fish and leafy greens. The change this made in our health was remarkable. Cecile rid herself of food allergies and I lost 80 pounds!” Buy Right, Eat Right, Feel Right chapters include Lowering Your Food Costs; Looking at Labels; Super Foods; Refrigerator & Freezer Storage Chart; and information about selecting, storing or preparing the best produce, meats, poultry, fish, seafood, eggs, cooking oils, minerals and herbs. So many people kept asking the Pogodas why they look so young, have so much energy, and why they’re so happy that Herb says he decided to tell them: “It’s in the book!” To order ‘Buy Right, Eat Right, Feel Right’ by Herb Pogoda, visit Amazon.com.
Miami-Dade is going mobile Miami-Dade clerk of courts Harvey Ruvin is launching mobile access to various county records, including real-estate records, marriage licenses, code-enforcement and parking violations. Other official records from the county recorder also will be available via mobile devices during the first phase of the project. The mobile portal at www.miami-dadeclerk.com, requires no app download and works with a host of mobile devices, including iPhones, iPads, Androids and other smartphones and tablets. “The push into mobile is all about delivering services the way people want to use them. We have custody of and manage all the courts and county commission records,’’ said Ruvin, who has run the state’s busiest clerk’s office since 1992. “The more accessible we can make it, the greater public value that asset becomes.’’ Users will now have the ability to execute various county transactions on mobile devices, including paying parking tickets or code enforcement violations and obtaining certified copies of documents. “I’ve had conversations with Realtors who are just drooling for this,’’ said Ruvin, who hopes to cut down on foot traffic at
county facilities and cut costs. By updating his mantra of serving people “online rather than in line” for the mobile age: “We want to provide information on the go, to do business on the go.” Laurie F. Reaves, director of the technical services division for the clerk’s office, said “80 percent of all collections are paid electronically, including by phone and Internet. Mobile access is expected to make online payments all the more popular.” “Mobile access provides the same menus and content as clerk’s regular Website, but in a format customized to display on mobile devices,” said Miguel A. Mukodsi, senior systems analyst/programmer for the clerk. The clerk’s office plans to launch Phase 2 of the project this summer by adding certain criminal records, and jury pool and other information. Phase 3 will expand mobile access to include records for family, civil, probate and traffic courts; and for the Value Adjustment Board, which reviews real estate assessments. Flying Your Flag
Rev. Wil Keyser RELIGION As we prepare for Flag Day, the day set aside to recognize and display the Flag of The United States Of America, we are reminded of the meaning for each of the colors that make up our flag. The red stripes stand for valor and bravery; the white stripes for purity and innocence and the blue field for vigilance, perseverance and justice. The first 13 stars represented the founding of the 13 colonies that fought to the death to provide freedom for the new nation. Today there are 50 stars and we would hope that if the same challenges and opposition to the basic beliefs of our founding fathers were to come against us that all 50 would have the same standards as the 13. But let us take a look at our own flag: If we were to design a banner representing who we are as individuals what colors and designs would best describe ‘us’? Would you come close to the valor and bravery of Joshua? Who, when confronted by overwhelming opposition, followed God’s command to “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you”. Would you be like Joshua? Or would you be like so many today who are willing to say, “Peace, at any price!” How much ‘red’ would be on your flag? When God looked at the way His own people, Israel, had set up kings without His
consent: they chose princes without His approval. With silver and gold they made idols for themselves until God said, “My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of purity”? Would that description fit you or would you like the Psalmist, David, who realized that only “He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false” could stand in the presence of God? How much ‘white’ would be in your flag? The third color in our national flag is ‘blue’ representing perseverance and justice. The Apostle Paul recognized what it meant to persevere. He also knew what it meant for those brave warriors who fought for the freedom of our new country; “We know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” That is not a “hope-so” but a confident expectation that what they fought for would endure. Solomon, the wisest man ever to live, wrote this: “When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers”. He also said, “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” How much ‘blue’ would be in your flag? I trust that as we display the flag of our Nation on this Flag Day we will also be able to display our personal flag containing the same colors, for the same reasons, as the Flag of the United States of America; Red/Valor and Bravery; White/Purity and Innocence, and Blue/Perseverance and Justice. What does your flag say about you? Rev. Keyser is Pastoral Director of The Quiet Place 305 931 4823.

Powerful real estate mother and son team
The typical relationship between a mother and son is a weekly phone call and maybe a Sunday dinner if they both live in the same area‌ But there is one mother and son duo that goes far beyond what most would call a traditional relationship. Carmen Gamarra and her son Shawn are far more than relatives‌they are a powerful real estate team who have worked together on many high-profile condo projects in South Florida. Carmen moved to the United States from Uruguay on a foreign exchange program and settled in Miami and raised Shawn on her own from the time he was three. When Shawn grew up, he took a liking to what his mom did for a living so he started to follow in her footsteps. 12-years later, the two are one of the most powerful mother/son real estate teams in the area. They have been working together for the
past two years and are now working on their third project as a duo at Marina Palms Yacht Club & Residences in North Miami Beach. So far, the team has sold nearly 60 percent of the Marina Palms inventory and was responsible for the sellout of 50 Biscayne and Cielo on the Bay.

Ronald L. Book, P.A. reviews 2013 Legislative Session The 2013 Session began with new leadership at the helm of the House and Senate with Senate President Don Gaetz and House Speaker Will Weatherford presiding over their respective Chambers. Dozens of freshman members joined returning members to confront a number of complex issues, including pension reform, ethics and election reform and gaming. The one constitutionally required objective of the session – crafting the state budget – would also prove to be more interesting this year, but not because there was less money. “Quite the opposite,” said Ron Book, president and CEO of Ronald L. Book, P.A. “This was the first session since 2007 that the state actually had increased revenues to spend.” Book, whose firm is known for their appropriations expertise, confirmed that the Legislature approved a $74.5 billion budget, a $4.5 billion increase over 2012, which included a $1.5 billion increase for education, salary increases for state workers, and an elimination of the sales tax on manufacturing machinery and equipment, which is expected to have a significant positive impact on businesses and business expansion in Florida. “The Legislature was very focused on a business agenda,” said Book. In addition to the manufacturing tax exemption, the Legislature approved expert witness reform, the
sales tax holiday and legislation to encourage public-private partnerships in public construction projects. Book said his firm was successful on behalf of a number of their clients. “We had some significant victories this year.” Joined by firm lobbyists Kelly Mallette and Rana Brown, Book said accomplishments included a rewrite of the landlord/tenant law for the Florida Apartment Association, a pre-suit process for actions against motor vehicle dealers on behalf of AutoNation, and legislation to encourage the use of online processing of tax deed applications for the Grant Street Group. “We also had appropriations success,” added Book, who helped secure $10 million for research at the Sylvester Cancer Center, $1.5 million for research at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and $1.3 million for child welfare services provided by Our Kids of Miami-Dade/Monroe. When asked what’s next for the firm now that they have returned from Tallahassee, Book responded. “We’re hard at work on our local practice and have already begun meeting with clients about their objectives for next session. It’s never too early to get started.” For more information about the session, to schedule a speaking engagement by Mr. Book or one of his colleagues or to discuss your issue, contact (305) 935-1866.

Jeep Cherokee SRT8 lineup adds new SE models Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is back in the 2013 lineup and billed as “the most powerful, technologically advanced, highperformance Jeep vehicle ever.” This top-of-the-line model has a combination of Jeep’s legendary capability and utility, merged with the advanced performance engineering from Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team. Joining the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 lineup for 2013 are two new special-edition models, the Bright White “Alpine” edition and Brilliant Black “Vapor” edition. Both models feature the addition of Black Vapor Chrome finish to the standard split fivespoke, 20-inch wheels along with unique gloss black exterior appointments, including the Jeep hood badge, Grand Cherokee door badge, Front grille surround and inserts, rear light bar and step pad and rear liftgate SRT8 badge accent. Standard luxury content includes premi-
um leather door trim panels, instrument panel and center console along with a power liftgate, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and Blind-spot Monitoring. Exclusive SRT leather wrapped and heated steering wheel features mounted paddle shifters for handson-the-wheel shifting both on road and at the racetrack. This “most powerful Jeep vehicle ever” comes with a 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 that delivers 470 hp and 465 pounds-feet of torque. That kind of power also makes the SRT the best performing Jeep vehicle ever, with a 060 mph speed of 4.8 seconds; a quartermile clocking in the mid-13 second range; and a top speed of 160 mph. The Grand Cherokee SRT also has an advanced adaptive damping suspension managed by the Selec-Track system, making it “the best handling Jeep ever.” There’s also an active valve exhaust system that allows the standard Fuel Saver Technology to engage over a wider rpm range for fuel efficiency and enable a 450-mile range. An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing delivers maximum low-end torque while optimizing high-end power across a wide rpm band. Specifically, 90 percent of peak torque is
