ust before students happily exclaimed, “School’s out for summer!” Comcast and HBO co-hosted the Aventura Marketing Council’s annual Student Run Breakfast Meeting featuring guest speaker Enid Weisman, Chief Human Capital Officer at MiamiDade Public Schools. The event highlighted school/business partnerships supported by the AMC – recipient of the Dade Partner of Excellence award four times and inducted into the Dade Partners Hall of Fame for four consecutive years. Hundreds of business, community and education leaders gathered at Florida International University’s Kovens Conference Center were impressed by “best and brightest” students who expertly ran the meeting representing the AMC’s Dade Partner (Back row L to R): Ed Ford, Eric Burt and Lisa Cortez, Comcast; Enid Weisman, Miami-Dade Public Schools; schools: Anabella Kupchik, Dr. Martin Karp and Dr. Wilbert “Tee” Holloway, Miami-Dade School Board; Spero Canton, Comcast; Joey Aventura City of Excellence Beard, HBO; (Front row L to R): Adam Bernstein, Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Sr. High; Shumara Cadet, North School; Sophie Agudelo, Ojus Miami Beach Sr. High; Daniel Nash , Aventura Waterways K-8 Center; Angelyn Escalona, David Lawrence Jr. Elementary School; Daniel Nash, K-8 Center; Sophie Agudelo, Ojus Elementary School; Anabella Kupchik, Aventura City of Excellence School; Aventura Waterways K-8 Center; Stephen Wittels, Dr. Michael M. Your Unlimited Possibilities
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Sometimes there are pearls of wisdom in unexpected places. There is a Garfield cartoon that shows Garfield the cat and Odie the dog running towards a tree. The next thing you see is Garfield and Odie sitting on the tree branch. Their owner is looking up at them and says, “Odie! Dogs can’t climb trees!” What would you accomplish if you didn’t know that you couldn’t do something? What if the limitations in your life were all in your mind? Before you can accomplish the seemingly impossible, you have to believe that you can. You have to stop telling yourself why you cannot achieve. You have to stop making excuses or explanations to yourself and others. You have to proceed without any doubt in your mind. Are you willing to believe that literally, “The sky’s the limit”? Are you willing to act as if this is true?
Like a superhero, you have to believe that you can fly. You have to believe in yourself and your spirit and in your own super-human qualities. You have to believe in your own unique abilities and trust your inner sense of “knowing”. You have to proceed without fear or hesitation. Leap off the cliff and out of the nest and trust yourself and the Universe to support you. Visualize yourself achieving what you desire. Keep it constantly in your mind’s eye. Believe it and most importantly, feel it. Focus on the outcome you desire. Do not worry about the means. The means will appear. This knowledge about the lack of limitations can be liberating and inspiring or threatening and frightening. You may hold back because you are ignorant about the laws of accomplishment. You may be afraid of failure and the shame that brings. You may not want to appear foolish and presumptuous. You may be uncomfortable accepting responsibility for your life. You may uncomfortable if you cannot blame someone or something else or your circumstances or even fate. Dare Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. Grace Coolidge, FDR and the Jewish children
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS In the coming years, a new tragic chapter may be added to the story of Anne Frank’s diary, as her life could have been saved. In 1938, the Wagner-Rogers Bill was introduced into Congress that would have admitted 20,000 German Jewish children under the age of 14, outside the quota system. Anne, as a German Citizen, could have been among those children. The Bill was heard in Congressional committee a few months after the Nazi’s murdered nearly 100 Jews, burned synagogues and 30,000 more were sent to concentration camps (Kristallnacht). Newly discovered letters from Anne Frank’s father revealed that the family “sought permission to come to the United States, but were turned away.” The tragedy is that “just a short time before, former First Lady Grace Coolidge, and other humanitarians had campaigned to approve the Bill to admit the Jewish refugee children, like Anne, but their pleas were rejected.” Strong supporters of the Bill also included actress Helen
Hayes, Catholic leader His Eminence George Cardinal Mundelein, N.Y. Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and 1936 Republican presidential nominee Alf Landon. Grace had announced that she and her neighbors would personally care for twenty-five of the children. Nativists, isolationists and antiSemites lobbied hard against the Bill. The children were kept out, according to the Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, “not because the quotas were full (which they never were during the war years) but because there were too many people who considered Jewish refugees (even children) as undesirable.” Unfortunately, bigotry was all too common in those years. FDR read the public opinion polls that indicated a negative attitude toward increased immigration. An appeal to FDR by First Lady Eleanor to support the Bill fell on deaf ears. Without FDR’s support, the Bill died in committee. Noted Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, while acknowledging that FDR was not an anti-Semite and sympathized with the Jewish refugee plight, “criticized FDR, his government and his people for not doing more, perhaps when more could have been done, to avert the tide of Nazi racial hegemony that ultimately contributed to the slaughter of millions of innocent European Jews.”

What to do when you’re under water with your home? BY RUSSEL LAZEGA, Attorney and Author
No, not the kind of Saturday morning HGTV “so my mortgage is underwater and I need the host (in 23 minutes) to help me sell it or fix it” but I mean really under water. This month, the first named weather event of the season poured more than a month’s worth of rain in a few short hours and left many South Floridians literally swimming in their living rooms. It also left many of us fighting with our insurance companies about who will pay to fix the mess. You know the story: Homeowner’s insurance says the damage was from rising water covered by your flood policy. Flood insurance says its water intrusion from the roof,
windows, and doors. In the end: nobody pays. So what do you do if neither insurer honors the claim? A licensed public adjuster can help by documenting the cause of the damage. A qualified insurance attorney can help prove the insurer’s liability in court if need be. Both will generally work strictly on a percentage of what they are able to recover for you. So remember, know what your policy covers and who you can call when you need help enforcing it. Russel Lazega is an attorney who represents consumers and policyholders in disputes with their insurance companies. He is also the author of several of Florida’s leading legal textbooks on insurance law. Mr. Lazega can be reached at Russ@lazegalaw.com or 754-263-4252.
Unloathe — changing the way residents shop, one delivery at a time There’s a common sentiment amongst big bulk item shoppers who often feel like they’re competing in a weight-lifting competition after a trip to the grocery store, or second guess whether they need a cart and a mule just to get all their groceries inside after a shopping trip. Unloathe (www.unloathe.com) has decided to eliminate those back-breaking trips to and from cars, and step-in as a personal, at-home, food delivery service. Unloathe is a growing wholesale e-store that eliminates annoyances of shopping for super-sized, bulky items typically found at wholesale clubs by allowing customers to shop for the same items online and delivering them right to customers’ door. BMW adds hybrid model to popular 3 Series Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS BMW has added a long-awaited hybrid model to the popular BMW3 Series sport sedan lineup. The design of the new model — ActiveHybrid 3 — is typical BMW, with the hint of a wedge shape underlining the sporty character. The silhouette even reflects the sedan’s balance and the even distribution of weight between the front and rear wheels, while the extra flaring around the rear wheel arches denotes the rear wheel drive. But it’s the hybrid technology that makes this car stand out. The ActiveHybrid 3 blends BMW’s responsive TwinPower Turbo 3.0liter inline 6-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with an electric motor powered by a high-voltage battery. Together the inline 6 and electric motor combine for 335 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain sends combined power to the rear wheels.
The ActiveHybrid 3 is the second hybrid BMW model — after the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 — to use an inline 6-cylinder engine. The engine has won the international “Engine of the Year” award two years in a row. The six-cylinder powerplant’s TwinPower Turbo technology uses a twinscroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection and variable valve timing. It all serves to improve response and rev ability, as well as refinement and efficiency, while an aluminum crankcase helps reduce weight. The ActiveHybrid 3’s electric motor is impressive. It develops a maximum 55 hp and supports all-electric operation around town. It also helps deliver instant acceleration without any lag time and, like all electric motors, develops full torque from a standing start. The motor can drive the sedan emissions free for speeds up to 45 mph for 2.5 miles. The motor is compactly located in the automatic transmission housing and connected to the transmission by a clutch, its operating temperature controlled by the engine cooling system. The motor is powered by a 96-cell lithium-ion high-voltage battery housed under the trunk between the wheels. The battery, developed specifically for the ActiveHybrid 3, is encased in a special high-strength

housing positioned between the wheel arches in the trunk and is uniquely cooled by a system integrated into the car’s air conditioning cooling circuit. The design and location of the battery provides optimal protection for it and helps ensure a well-balanced weight distribution. The internal combustion engine is only started when the driver requires more power; it is then engaged automatically. Its performance can be boosted by the electric motor to provide extra power when acceler-
ating. Under combined ICE/electric power, the ActiveHybrid 3 delivers a 0-60 clocking of 5.3 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph. The BMW ActiveHybrid 3 has an MSRP of $50,195. Diagnosis and Research of Alzheimer’s Disease Dr. Daniel Varon MOUNT SINAI HEALTH CORNER According to the most recent report from the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.4 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Mount Sinai’s Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders, the premier facility of its kind in Florida, is focused on finding better treatment options to stop or slow the progression of the disease. The Wien Center’s multidisciplinary approach incorporates neurology, psychiatry, genetics, geriatrics and diagnostic imaging to develop successful medical responses to Alzheimer’s disease and related memory disorders. The Wien Center is a frequent participant in groundbreaking national and international clinical trials, research projects and imaging studies. One current national study involves amyloid imaging, which detects the presence of amyloid proteins in the brain using magnetic resonance imaging. Eighty percent of all individuals who develop these proteins eventually suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Better understanding and detection of amyloids can help explain why the remaining 20 percent do not develop memory disorders. Additionally, the Wien Center currently is
participating in an analysis of brain images with the goal of finding a new method to detect the earliest possible stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Determining the pace at which each patient develops the disorder and responds to treatment will help researchers evaluate the success of treatments intended to slow the rate of mental decline. The center also administers the Florida Brain Bank, which provides autopsy and neuropathology services to those who enroll themselves or their loved ones in a brain donation program. A major goal of the brain bank is to provide Florida researchers with stored brain tissue samples that can be used now and in the future to develop cures for dementia. The Wien Center also provides free memory screenings for individuals age 50 and older, which can offer an early indication of cognitive impairment so that preventive care can begin as quickly as possible. With millions of Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s, the Wien Center at Mount Sinai remains focused on finding better treatment options to stop or slow the progression of the disease. Dr. Daniel Varon is is the associate director of the Wien Center for Alzheimer 's Disease and Memory Disorders at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He sees patients at both Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, as well as in Mount Sinai Aventura’s multi-specialty physician office. For more information, or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Varon, call 305-674-CARE (2273).

Life is Good at Trump International BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
So, you’ve worked hard all week and long for a little respite? Well, there is a place just a few miles away in Sunny Isles where time can stand still for a couple of days and the sound of the waterfalls will lull you into a trance. Treat yourself to a weekend at Trump International where Life is Good! Not knowing what to expect, as I had never been to Sunny Isles, I made my way to the resort and knew I had fallen onto something special as I made my way to my room. All rooms have bay or ocean views and are equipped with refrigerator and microwave. Beautifully decorated in tones of lime green and teal blue, which, according to Greg Columbus, Associate Director of Group Sales, brings the outside in for a very serene effect. My balcony overlooked the massive grotto pool with its numerous waterfalls and the beach below. Now where did I put my bikini? My first “let’s get acquainted with Sunny Isles” was a stop at the Dezer Collection Auto Museum. Now, before you roll your eyes, let me tell you how blown away I was. This, my friends, is not your run of the mill car museum. Housed in a 240,000 square foot complex is one of the largest collections of James Bond cars, props and memorabilia. Valued at over $15 million, the exhibition took my breath away. But, and this is a big but, not to be out done, there is Hollywood Cars of the Stars that include Back to the Future, the Munsters and Holy Batcave, Robin……The Batmobile. This is an absolute must see with military vehicles, American classics, European classics and so much more including a 50’s diner. A quick change and I was off to dinner at Neomi’s Grill to sit and look outside at yet another waterfall. Everything on their extensive menu put together by Rising Star Chef Kurtis Jantz looked appealing, but the Chianti “Classico” Shortribs with potato omelet was my choice along with a crab cake to start. If I thought that was unbeatable, it is only because I hadn’t had the fried cheesecake yet. “Yet” being the key word because I ordered it both nights. All I can say is that it was sinful. As I waddled my way back to the room, it occurred to me that I saw a scale in the bathroom. Word of caution: Do Not get on it. With all the great food and drink at the resort, throw a towel over it and forget it. That being said, there is so much you can do to ward off the calories. The resort boasts a newly equipped gym, a massive outdoor lap pool, water sports of every kind, tennis courts or the resort will drive you over to Turnberry for a round of golf. If walking the mall is how you get your exercise, fear not, as you will be transported in style by their
Mercedes Benz shuttle to Bal Harbor or Aventura mall. As morning beckoned, it was difficult to drag myself out of my exceedingly soft and comfortable bed but I had a spa appointment I didn’t want to miss. The Aquanox Spa offers a nice selection of treatments as well as a sauna, steam room and a lounge of tranquility where you can help yourself to teas, cucumber infused water, fruit and nuts. While waiting for my treatment, I curled up in one of their chairs, pulled a waiting blanket over me and watched the flicker of a candle as I felt my body and mind unwind. I experienced the Signature Gold Facial, which is not to be missed and decided to pamper myself even more by getting a sugar body scrub. I think the last time my skin felt that soft was the day I was born. Warning: this could become habit forming.
Next stop, Gili’s Beach Club. This is a hidden gem and the great thing is, you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel to come and enjoy the club. The beach club is an outdoor bar and restaurant with a menu that surpasses any beach club menu I’ve seen. It consists of ten appetizers, Seafood Bar replete with shrimp, crab claws and lobster, six salads, seven sandwiches, six entrees and four tempting desserts along with a kid’s menu. I opted for the Gili’s Salad that is marinated beets, goat cheese, pistachios and baby arugula with red zin-beet vinaigrette. Oh and by the way, I topped it off with a Gili’s Sunrise- tequila, cranberry, orange, and pineapple juice topped with Moet & Chandon and fresh ginger flower. Do I hear an Amen? The beachside bar has TVs and big comfy chairs but if you want that toes in the sand feeling, they will set you up with a chaise and
umbrella. Once set up, there is no need to move, unless you want to take a dip in the ocean, because they will bring the food and drink to you. If, on the other hand, you seek something a bit more private, there are airconditioned cabanas you can rent complete with private shower, TV and frig. Now that is having the best of both worlds! What a fun way to enjoy a day at the beach with the kids, by yourself or with someone special. As I was sitting there with a Gili’s sunrise in hand (no ones counting), looking out at the royal blue umbrellas dotting the beach, it occurred to me that the ocean was meeting the sea foam cushions on the white wicker furniture of the beach club. What a beautiful seascape….it doesn’t get much better than this. An early Sunday morning walk with only the footprints of those before me to keep me and my thoughts company. How light and refreshed I was feeling. A quick few laps in the pool and off to one heck of a breakfast buffet. Inside or outside seating was the first question, and then came the offer of a newspaper and fresh squeezed orange juice. Drinking my coffee and gazing around at the tables I realized that Trump International has something to offer everyone. For the single person who wants a few days to themselves, no problem. There is the beach, pool, spa and several little areas where you can grab a book and relax on cushioned sofas. For the family, no problem. Let Trumps qualified staff at Planet Kids entertain the tots while you two have some adult time. Want to get away with your sweetheart, no problem. The two of you can do as much or as little as you like. By the afternoon, I was ensconced on a chaise by one of the waterfalls dreading having to leave. About that time, a staff member came by offering popsicles to young and old alike. I caught myself taking it all in, the people at the pool bar, the kids in the pool while the parents sat on the side, frozen drink in hand. Couples sitting under the waterfall and all the time, the staff never missed a beat. I found the staff here to have a remarkable energy and genuineness about them that is engaging engaging. Well, as the saying goes, “All good things must end” but as my waiter, Lucian said, “You have to be happy. You get stressed? For what? You die young.” So with those words hanging in the air, my question to you is, “Who’s going to meet me at Gili’s Beach Club next weekend?” For more information on Trump International and their summer packages, visit them at www.trumpmiami.com or 305-692-5600 Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor for the Miami’s Community Newspapers.
