You are stepping on my shadow
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING When an individual steps on your shadow they are annoying and irritating you. They are violating you in a way, by invading and intruding on your personal space. They are unwanted and uninvited. They are forcing you to pay attention to them. They are causing you a degree of anger or mental distress by distracting you and diverting you from your personal thoughts. They make it difficult to stay focused on your own world without interruption. They are interfering with your natural rhythm and flow and with your stream of conscious or subconscious thoughts. They are intrusive, irritating, maddening and infuriating. They do not seem to care that their behavior is selfish, rude, aggressive and very disrespectful. It is easy and normal l to feel resentment towards them. They have usurped your power and control. They are threatening your integrity and wholeness as an individual with equal rights.
When someone encroaches on you it creates discomfort. It is disturbing. You feel badgered and upset. You may feel harassed. It is disturbing and a nuisance. Some people and situations are more annoying than others. What can you do? Don’t confront the offender directly. They may become violent. Don’t give the offender an annoyed look or any indication that you are exasperated or bothered by their behavior. It will not stop them which will upset you even more. All you can do is learn to tune them out. Take a deep breath. Shift your focus. Dismiss them and their behavior. Chalk it up to ignorance, bad manners, lack of consideration, insensitivity and misplaced feelings of entitlement. Have pity on them for they are clueless about life so they will not be able to achieve or experience life’s greatest glories. Don’t let them or their behavior get on your nerves because that will cause unhealthy hormones and chemicals to circulate in your brain and throughout your body. Then their actions become not just annoying to you but harmful to you. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212-308-0309.

The brother of the ‘Raging Bull’
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS My good friend Joey La Motta recently told me a heretofore unrevealed true story involving his brother Jake “Raging Bull” La Motta, one of the world’s greatest middleweight fighters in the 1940-50 era. The fight on May 4, 1950 in Syracuse, New York was intended as an easy tune up for Jake against contender Joe Taylor. Provided he defeated Taylor, Jake was scheduled to fight a few months later for the World Middleweight Title. A loss to Taylor could have prevented Jake from ever getting another shot at the title. Joey, a former excellent fighter in his own right, was Jake’s manager and in his corner that night in Syracuse. The Taylor fight was not going as planned. Perhaps Jake and Joey had taken Taylor too lightly, but going into the 9th round, Taylor had the edge. With a longer reach and continual jabs, Taylor kept Jake away from him round after round. Jake
became frustrated, wildly throwing punches. Suddenly, Jake got Taylor in the corner and started pummeling him with blows to his body. Taylor started to sag just as Joey saw the timekeeper raise the hammer to end the round. Jake needed a little time. That came from Joey, who suddenly threw his body over the bell, yelling to Jake to knock him out, while the timekeeper tried to pull Joey off the bell. The timekeeper called the security guard for help. The more the two men pulled, the more Joey resisted. The extra thirty seconds was all Jake needed before the timekeeper was finally able to ring the bell. Taylor staggered to his corner, unable to defend himself in the 10th round. Jake was declared the winner while Joey was suspended by the Boxing Commission for five years. A few months later, Jake fought and won the World Middleweight Championship title. The 1980 film “Raging Bull” was selected as the best picture of the decade. Robert DeNiro, playing Jake, won the best actor award. Joey’s role was played by Joe Pesci. It might be fascinating to see a movie sequel entitled, “The Brother of the Raging Bull.”

Starting one’s own business is a dream that many of us share. The current economic climate, has created an unprecedented opportunity in this space. Whether you own a “new startup” or are the CEO of a recently formed and flourishing company, you are faced or will be with a certain reality, rearing its head too soon and in some cases too late! As a visionary, most entrepreneurs must be equipped with maximum armor for survival. This includes a vigilant ongoing oversight of the finances of the business. This stands in sharp contrast to an all too common practice of keeping “receipts in a shoe box” and then delivering to the Company CPA a “cannon shot” of mixed invoices, statements and unrelated scraps of financial papyrus-like material just before tax time. There is a natural tendency on the part of entrepreneurs to “glaze” over any discussion addressing this situation. The large number of occupants in the cemetery of “small business failures” is often attributed to a “too-late” understanding of the busi-

ness financial picture. The natural focus on the products or services offered by the business often overshadows efforts to get the finances in order. In better times, a business could hobble along for some time; in today’s climate that is not possible! A needed solution is some method of automating the on-going finances while at the same time being able to read the financial pulse of the business. Quickbooks is a recommended solution, a system which has successfully supported a majority of small and mid size businesses. It is an invaluable tool which not only provides the owner with the necessary tools to record financial information, it allows the owner to send “reminders” of unpaid bills, provides a suite of reports revealing current profit and loss information, balance sheet status among others, all indispensable to allow proper management of any company. Once customized, Quickbooks is easy to use on an ongoing basis and will be an invaluable tool for the business owner. Lexus LS 460 has elegance, refinement, performance Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS The Lexus television commercial says the company is “in relentless pursuit of perfection” in an automobile. They may very well have hit the mark with the 2011 LS 460. After significant changes in 2010 that saw revised styling, electronics and an optional performance-tuned Sport Package, Lexus continues to offer the LS 460 and the longwheelbase LS 460 L, both available in rearwheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The LS 460 has the brand’s sleek L-finesse design philosophy that conveys elegance and refinement. Minimal body gaps, a low front grille and deep-drawn fenders all contribute to the car’s distinctive muscular profile. Attention to detail is evident in the integrated dual chrome exhaust tips and the one-piece chrome window surround. For 2011, changes were made to the LS suspension for all-wheel drive models and
the new standard Smart Stop Technology was added. LS 460 AWD models have standard coil suspension for comfortable daily driving and available air suspension that lets drivers adjust for a given driving situation. The Smart Stop Technology is a braking system enhancement that automatically reduces engine power when the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are applied simultaneously under certain driving conditions. Lexus LS 460 models deliver the luxury of powerful, smooth performance from a 4.6-liter V-8 teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces 380 hp and 367 pounds-feet of peak torque in rear-wheeldrive configuration; 357 hp and 344 poundsfeet of torque with AWD. The LS V-8’s performance is due in large part to innovative technologies, including the electric motor-driven Variable Valve Timing with intelligence and an electronically (VVTiE) controlled intake cam. The electrically controlled intake achieves better engine-startup operation and high-output performance. A dual fuel-injection system, with both port and direct injection, optimizes efficiency under all conditions. The direct injection helps provide cylinder cooling that allows the high compression ratio (11.8:1) needed to produce such high power cleanly and effi-

ciently. The dual-tract intake system and an Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) contribute to the smooth power delivery. The Lexus eight-speed automatic transmission allows gear ratios that maximize torque up to the tire-grip limitations in the lower ranges, yet maintains quietness and admirable fuel efficiency at higher speeds. The LS 460 accelerates from zero-to-60 mph in about 5.4 seconds; 5.9 seconds for the AWD models. Even with that level of performance, the LS 460 has earned an EPA-estimated 16/24
mpg fuel economy rating (AWD is 16/23 mpg) and meets Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle II (ULEV II) certification. An ECO drive indicator helps encourage economical driving. Base price on the 2011 LS 460 Touring Edition (rear wheel drive model) is $73,000.

Nutriway hosts Matthew ‘Whiz’ Buckley, Continued from page 1 ––––––––––––––––––––– open in Aventura’s Promenade Shops along with his partners Eran Danino and founder Philippe Troquet. Founded in Belgium 11 years ago, Nutriway now has weight-loss centers throughout Europe offering a highquality protein product line featuring nutritious, great tasting protein snacks, soups, drinks and meals that have helped over 1.3 million clients achieve weight loss while maintaining energy levels and muscle mass. During the meeting, AMC members were encouraged to try some of Nutriway’s delicious protein products clinically proven to help kick-start weight loss by reducing the body’s insulin level, which forces the body to naturally burn fat. Just some of the selections include high-protein soups including Cream of Mushroom or Tomato; entrees such as Vegetable Chili; high-protein bars like Caramel Nut and Coconut Almond Fudge; oatmeal mixes; hot and cold drinks; protein shakes and puddings. Nutriway’s doctor-approved, personalized approach also emphasizes psychological motivation, education and support provided by a team of nutritionists dedicated to supporting clients “every step of the way” to weight loss success. But when it comes to business success, Matthew “Whiz” Buckley is the man to salute. A graduate of TOPGUN Navy Fighter Weapons School, Buckley flew the F/A-18 Hornet and 44 combat sorties over southern Iraq. After leaving active duty, he served as managing director of a $2.5 billion option trading firm headquartered in Chicago and is currently founder and CEO of a financial company based in Boca Raton. Specializing in leadership development, risk management and strategic planning for Fortune 500 companies, Buckley is an internationally recognized speaker and is now also sharing his experiences in the military and corporate America in his book From Sea Level to C Level: A Fighter Pilot’s Journey from the Front Lines to the Front Office. Targeted to top executives, the book features powerful tools to identify, manage, and defeat business risks; and provides essential insights and strategies to jumpstart programs or improve risk management initiatives. Sharing his own struggle to overcome career setbacks in the aftermath of 9/11, Buckley said he went from “hero to zero” – but was ultimately able to translate leadership in the military to the business world. “Stay focused on the competitive ‘threat’ – if you lose sight, I guarantee you’ll lose the fight,” he advised, going on to emphasize leadership is an ‘AART’ – an acronym standing for Authority, Accountability, Responsibility and Trust that must be shared amongst owners, management and staff. Buckley also advocated deploying a corporate “battle plan” based on the strategy: Plan, Brief, Execute, Debrief. “To improve future execution, I ‘debrief’ everything in my business,” he said. “Ask, how did we do vs. how did we want to do? What were the good outcomes and ‘other’ outcomes that can be turned into lessons learned. Also remember as leaders, it starts with you – so don’t lead a debriefing with ‘we.’ It begins with ‘I’ – I made this mistake during an execution and I can get better.” For more information about Nutriway in Aventura’s Promenade Shops, call 305-438-7775 or visit mynutriway.com (PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW GOLDTSEIN)

Tips on How to Improve the Beauty of Your Smile BY DR. JOSE J. ALVAREZ, DMD
A smile is an important feature, and one of the primary things others notice upon meeting you. Being self-conscious about your smile can have psychological effects that can result in low selfesteem. However, your smile can easily be restored or enhanced with cosmetic dental procedures with a wide variety of costs. If a broken tooth, discoloration or crooked teeth are taking away from your smile, here are some solutions to consider: Professional Teeth Whitening: A fast, effective way to instantly brighten almost any smile. Dental Bonding: A great way to fill in cracks or chips in the tooth, even indentations that may appear on the tooth surface can be filled for a smooth surface. Veneers: Veneers are coverings that are placed on top of a tooth to provide instant results for covering up discolorations, gaps or chips. History Miami exhibition focuses on 100 years of aviation in Miami BY ROBERT HAMILTON
All of Miami gathered on July 20, 1911 to witness an extraordinary event. Hired by Mayor Everest Sewell, aviator Howard Gill climbed into the cockpit of a wood and cloth-winged biplane furnished by the Wright Brothers and flew it into the blue skies above the Miami Golf Links, performing the very first flight in the area. The rest, as they say, is history. “Aviation in Miami: The First 100 Years,” on display at History Miami through July 22, 2012, goes behind-thescenes to explore the extensive engagement Greater Miami and its residents have had with the aviation industry since this historic first flight. The exhibition addresses the evolving concerns of the aviation industry throughout the 20th Century and how they were tackled by developers, promoters, pilots and hundreds of thousands of Miamians who were employed or participated in the development of the field. On view are artifacts from famous avia-

Please note that the Aviation in Miami exhibition will be on hiatus between Jan. 15 and Feb. 22, 2012. History Miami is located in the Cultural Center at 101 W. Flagler St. in downtown Miami.

Watch your language!
Rev. Wil Keyser RELIGION From our earliest days we remember Watch hearing someone say, very sternly, “W Your Language!” Today we are constantly being told to watch our language even though what you say is the truth, if it offends someone, we dare not say it. For example; entering our country unlawfully does not make you “illegal” you are simply “an unregistered visitor.” Try that at a hotel on the beach and see how long you stay before you are either thrown out or arrested. The truth is also under fire because “My truth may not be your truth”, so I must watch my language. However you may say whatever pleases you. Therein lies the problem: “Say whatever pleases you!” The Psalmist, David, provided the solution in his closing statement in Psalm 19: “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Does your language please God or you? Many years later the Apostle Paul wrote: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29) David and Paul Watch Your said exactly the same thing: “W Language!” However, Paul was a little more specific: “Let your conversation
always be full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (Colossians 4:6) Two important aspects of conversation, or speech, are emphasized: “Full of grace” means to be sensitive, gentle, truthful and thoughtful; “Seasoned with salt” suggests the applying the preservative that prevents things, even our speech, from becoming putrid or rotten. Your mouth cannot act on its own; Your brain, which David refers to as your heart, the place where decisions are made, must first process your thoughts (meditation) before the words come out of your mouth. Obviously, if rotten words come out of your mouth it is proof that your mind is also rotten. That is why it is extremely important for us to apply both thoughtfulness and preservatives to our speech. Solomon, “Wiser than any other man” ( I Kings 4:31) had some important things to say about watching our language as well: “A gentle answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger. The lips of the wise spread knowledge; Lips that spread knowledge are rare jewels.” Apparently the langauge being used in David’s, Paul’s and Solomon’s day were not different from wat we hear day. Perhaps we need to pay more attention to the instruction of those three men. Consider how much different our conversaton would be if, before we spoke, we said: “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. The world would be a much quieter and more pleasant place in which to live. Rev. Keyser is Pastor of The church At Aventura 305 931 4823

Cooking with Fish Scales BY MARTIN MENDIOLA Mendiola@USGourmet.US
While at the fish market over the 4th of July weekend, a relatively young couple standing in the background attentively listened to the conversation I was having with Roberto our fishmonger. They knew we had just decided on a couple of red snappers in the 2 to 3 pound range with very clear eyes and reddish gills that clearly showed they had been out of the water for just a few hours. The couple was perplexed when I told Roberto to gut them and leave the scales. After a moment, they could no longer help it
can often be tied to the lifestyle of the species. There are different types of scales and are categorized into five main types, Placoi, Cosmoid, Ganoid, Cycloid and Ctenoid, which only those interested in Squamatology, the study of scales, know about. We are not going around looking, but have never even heard of someone who cares. “The reason for our keeping the scales” we went on to say “is because of how we are going to cook them. On the 4th of July everyone is doing something on the grill, mostly making hotdogs and hamburgers, but for a change of pace we like to grill fish”. Usually when thinking about grilling fish,
and graciously while almost apologetic asked “Why are you keeping the scales? Isn’t removing the scales part of cleaning the fish? You are not going to eat them, are you?” While we all laughed, Roberto just looked at me and said “Maybe you should answer this one”. “I have never heard of a single dish that calls for fish scales, even though they serve many functions” I said. “For example, according to several studies published in the Research Journal of Chemistry, fish scales are one of the better alternatives when used as a biosorbent to regulate the copper levels in water. Excessive levels of copper have adverse health effects on the human body” Nevertheless, the most important function of scales is to protect the fish from external injuries, recognizing that not all fish have scales. They vary from one evolutionary line of fish to another. The type of scales a fish has, as well as whether a species has scales at all,
you think of the thick steaks or tender fillets, instead, we like to butterfly, split or kite them with the scales on. It is called butterflying or kiting because of their appearance, while splitting is what you are actually doing, even though it is kept in one piece. When this procedure is done properly, most of the bones are removed. As the fish cooks on either the open flame or on aluminum foil if you want to keep it cleaner, the scales burn off and remain attached to the skin. Once again, as originally intended, the scales protect the flesh. With little seasoning, nothing more than some good extra virgin olive oil and a bit of salt and pepper, the fish will keep its natural flavor. When cooked properly, you will be able to remove the meat with a plastic spatula or even a spoon, since it will slide off the skin and scales which are left behind. We have seen different versions where grilling chefs have added all kinds of herbs and aromatics, garlic, onions, cilantro, lemon or lime, parsley and even BBQ sauce. Sometimes after the fish is cooked, different sauces are added that could be as simple as olive oil with roasted garlic or complicated enough to include clams and shrimp. Basically the fish can be made to match your mood and taste, but to this date I have yet to see anyone enjoying the scales.

Summer Fitness Tip BY BARI AUERBACH
Now that it’s getting so hot outside, it’s time to start thinking about some innovative ways to stay fit without overheating, dehydrating or succumbing to the temptation to just stay home and eat ice cream! * Go to the mall: Since Aventura Mall keeps expanding, you could easily spend all day burning calories by walking around to see all the new stores. Just pick up the pace a bit and you can even wear your iPod for more momentum! If you’re really serious about fitness, you might even opt to park your own car and go the extra distance instead of using the valet service. But before you leave, don’t forget to pass by Equinox Fitness Club at the mall and wave to all the people exerting themselves. With all the shopping bags you’ll be carrying, your biceps will probably be getting a much better workout!. * Go to the movies: Some of the summer blockbusters can really get your heart rate up or make you shake a lot with uncontrollable laughter – so there won’t be any need to do cardio at all!
Never Pay Another Expensive Repair Again
Ly Espinol
* Go buy a bathing suit: There’s nothing like the fluorescent lights in a dressing room to make you swear to start a new diet. And if you’re trying on bathing suits, odds are you’ll hurry home to throw out everything in the fridge except for the egg whites and mustard. The good news is by the time you’ve lost a few pounds that expensive bathing suit you really wanted will probably be on sale!
* Go on vacation: When you go on a trip, you can get away from all the diet sabotaging temptations at home and around the office. Just don’t indulge in too many pina coladas and reserve a room without a minbar. If you get a really bad craving for something sweet late at night, make sure you don’t get caught stealing all the chocolates from under the pillows of other guests’ rooms! * Go outside: All you have to do is stand outside around high noon for a while and you’ll lose plenty of water weight without even having to join a gym to use the sauna! If you want the pounds to come off even faster, roll yourself up in some saran wrap and dine al fresco by frying an egg on the sidewalk (with nonfat cooking spray, of course!)

Pet Tips Brought to You by Pet Supermarket
Safe Fun in the Sun with Fido The summer is in full swing and it's time for fun outdoor games in the sun. As fun as they are, these outdoor activities pose a few risks to Fido, whether he's a frisky puppy or a tame senior. Follow our basic tips to avoid a few summer hazards. Dehydration - Dogs love to play outdoors, but they can overdo it in hot weather. Make sure your doggie is hydrated because he'll feel more intense heat at his level, closer to the pavement, than you will. Heatstroke - We know you've heard this before, but it bears repeating... never leave your dog in the car. Even with the windows down, a car can reach oven-like temperatures that are fatal to Fido. Leave him at home instead or have someone stay in the air-conditioned car with him. Signs of heat stroke: • Vigorous panting • Lying down and unwilling to get up • Dark red gums • Tacky or dry gums • Thick saliva • Dizziness • Collapsing or fainting Sunburn - Believe it or not, dogs get sunburned too, especially if they have short hair and fair skin. You can easily care for your canine by apply-
ing sunscreen to his back, head, nose and ears before going outside. Overwhelming crowds - Large outdoor events are often overwhelming and could lead to injuries, dehydration or exhaustion more easily. Another risk comes from your dog eating unhealthy food or trash left on the ground. Stick to less-crowded areas or limit his time at the event. Swimming dangers - Since your dog might not be a natural swimmer, stick close when he dips in. If you have a pool, think about buying a ramp so he can get out if he falls into the deep end. Going to the beach? Watch for undertows and jellyfish. Also, keep him from drinking salt water, which is dehydrating. Pet Supermarket carries a wide selection of doggie life preservers for different sized dogs to help make your dog's day in the water safe, and fun! Getting lost - With more outside playtime, your pup might try to get away to visit your furry neighbors. Now's the time to make sure your yard is fully secure and his ID tag has a current phone number. A microchip ID is also a good idea. Protect your dog from these hazards and he'll be sure to have a safe, fun summer outdoors. Get ready for warm weather with the latest safety products and outdoor toys at Pet Supermarket.
Shopping for Kitty? Forget the Milk Cats and milk seem to go together, with milk often used as a treat. But the reality is that milk may be bad for your cat. Cats, like humans, can be lactose-intolerant. Without the enzyme needed to break down milk, a cat can be affected by an upset stomach, gas, diarrhea or vomiting. As cats age, they often become more susceptible to these symptoms. Does your cat need milk? The idea that cats need to drink milk every day
is a myth. Just think of big cats in the wild. They don't have access to cow's milk and are healthy without it. It isn't necessary for your cat's good health either. Occasional indulgence is OK, but keep milk off your cat's diet because in his case, it doesn't do a body good. Whether it's toys or flavored goodies, all kitties love a good treat. Find your cat's favorites at Pet Supermarket.

ASK YOUR PROPERTY APPRAISER‌
Miami-Dade Property Appraiser Pedro J. Garcia Answers Questions From Property Owners
Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser Pedro Garcia has identified community education and outreach as being among the important tasks for his office. He frequently attends meetings of professional organizations, community groups and homeowners associations. Additionally, he has makes himself and his senior staff available to the media, granting interviews to radio, television and newspaper reporters. This newspaper column is his latest outreach effort to property owners and other residents, providing an opportunity for them to ask questions and hear from their Property Appraiser. QUESTION: Last year, the value of my home along with all the others in my community, declined substantially. However, the Property Appraiser increased my assessment and my taxes went up. How can you increase my assessment when property values are going down? PEDRO GARCIA: This subject was raised indirectly last month. Thank you for the opportunity to explain it more fully. In 1992 Florida voters overwhelmingly approved Constitutional Amendment 10, which is generally known as the “Save Our Homes amendment. This amendment passed out of concern for rising property values, which resulted in higher property taxes. The idea, as some supporters of the amendment put it, was to prevent homeowners from being taxed out of their homes. The Save Our Homes amendment
created a second value on properties with a homestead exemption, called the assessed value. Unlike the market value, which must show the full value of the property as of each January 1, the assessed value only increases by 3% or the Consumer Price Index (CPI), whichever is lower. Therefore, even as the market value of a home increased by whatever the market dictated, the assessed value increase could go up by no more than 3% or the CPI. Amendment 10 saved homeowners hundreds and thousands of dollars in taxes in those years when the market was increasing by double digits. Market values have been decreasing in the last few years. However, the law requires that properties, which still have a Save Our Homes assessed value that is lower than their market value, must be increased by up to the 3%. This is called the Recapture Rule. What does this mean in taxes? Let’s use 2010 data as an example. The CPI that year was 2.7%. As such, a property with homestead exemption in unincorporated MiamiDade County with an assessed value of $100,000 in 2009 was increased for 2010 by 2.7%. This increased the assessed value by $2,700, resulting in the homeowner paying $55.24 more in taxes because of this Save Our Homes increase. For 2011 the CPI is 1.5% and unless the law is changed, or the Recapture Rule eliminated, any homesteaded property with an assessed value lower than the market value, will be subject to this 1.5 percent increase in assessed value. Over the last several sessions, members of the Florida Legislature have talked about changing the law to eliminate this Recapture Rule. This year, there are bills making their way through the legislature which do just that; stop assessed value increases in declining markets. I have given these efforts my full support and I encourage you to contact your representative in Tallahassee and make your opinion on this matter known. To ask the Property Appraiser a question please write to: Ask the Property Appraiser 111 NW 1st Street, Suite 710 Miami, Florida 22128
