ventura Marketing Council members recently huddled with Mike Dee, CEO of the Miami Dolphins and Sun Life Stadium when the new Duffy’s Sports Grill in North Miami Beach hosted the AMC’s July Chairman’s Roundtable luncheon. Kicking off the event, AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman along with Duffy’s leadership team of Jay and Jason Emmett welcomed business and community leaders to Duffy’s – the official sports grill of favorite teams including the Miami Dolphins. Recently celebrating the grand opening of its first Miami-Dade location at the Intracoastal Mall, Duffy’s spans over 25,000 square feet with 700 seats, 200 plasma TVs and 500 feet of dockage. Named “Best Sports Bar” by Channel 10 News, Duffy’s is renowned for the $6.99 weekday lunch; $7.95 weekend brunch; 2-4-1 daily Happy Hours;

six styles of chicken wings; express takeout; plus party menus perfect for social and corporate events. When the microphone was passed to Mike Dee, he spoke about his long-time friendship with the Emmet family and emphasized Duffy’s is “a great corporate citizen,” partnering in worthy causes including youth sports programs and the Miami Dolphins Cycling Challenge benefiting the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center. “This year our goal is to double the number of riders to 600 and raise over one million dollars,” Dee said. Turning to football news, Dee predicted, “Hopefully we can expect football to be back ‘fast and furious’ and the momentum behind those at the negotiation table will carry us across the goal line. If that happens, football fans will see off-season activity condensed into five to seven days before training camp would open the weekend of July 29.” Tackling the prospect of bringing Super Bowls back to Sun Life Stadium, Dee explained, “The next Super Bowl up for bid is the 50th anniversary game that will be played in February of 2016. What better place to have it than here in South Florida host of more Super Bowls than any other community. It also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the Dolphins - so wouldn’t it be great to win it on our home field!” Before the meeting’s two-minute warning, Dee encouraged everyone to take advantage of great season ticket packages. “The season starts Monday night September 12 with the Dolphins first game of the year against the New England Patriots. We hope to see you at Sun Life Stadium and here at Duffy’s. If you’re a football junkie and Dolphins fan, stay tuned to MiamiDolphins.com for all your news and information.”

The View from the Valley

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING When you are in a valley looking up molehills can seem like mountains. The mountains may seem to surround you on all sides. There may seem to be too many of them and they may seem to be too high. It is so easy to become discouraged in life. When you are discouraged you are without courage and confidence. You lack the energy and will to try. You lack the strength to fight. Becoming discouraged robs you of your daring. You feel inhibited and hindered. Your progress is thwarted. You are delayed and held back before you even start. You feel downhearted, disheartened, dispirited, and demoralized. You may even feel despair. You can discourage yourself or others can discourage you. Regardless, when things are hard and do not go your way you must find and strengthen your courage and self-confidence. Do not think or accept

negative thoughts, words or statements about yourself. Encourage yourself.by reminding yourself of how good you are and of all of your abilities and accomplishments. Truly like yourself. Remember that you have an inner spirit. Have confidence in that spirit and in yourself. You are capable of accomplishing anything and everything. You can find creative and clever solutions to all your problems and situations. You can alter and adapt to your circumstances. You are strong. You are capable. You have great courage. You have boundless energy and perseverance. You are successful in everything that you attempt. You can move mountains. Edgar Guest has a great poem that is says it best: “There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, there are thousands to prophecy failure. There are thousands to point out to you, one by one, the dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, just take off your coat and go to it. Just start to sing as you tackle the thing that “cannot be done” and you’ll do it.” Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305788-4864, 212-308-0309.

Joey La Motta Loses – Jake Starts Swinging

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS In 1946, I went to Newark’s Laurel Gardens to see heavily favored Bronx middleweight contender Joey La Motta fight Freddy Flores, a 3 to 1 underdog from Puerto Rico. Joey’s brother, middleweight contender Jake “Raging Bull,’ was not scheduled to appear on the card that night but that didn’t stop him from entering the ring, throwing a few blows and taking the major role in the ring while 2500 boxing fans witnessed a small riot. Joey suffered a cut under his right eye in the second round of the featured bout. By the end of the fourth round, Joey was bleeding so profusely, that Referee Paul Cavalier called Dr. John Staknevich to inspect the damaged eye. Dr. Staknevich “ordered the fight stopped.” An angry Jake leaped into the ring, his eyes blazing and began swinging at the doctor. Several plainclothesmen and Newark

Patrolman Peter Farley jumped in the ring to aid the doctor. They were followed into the ring by two Bronx friends of La Motta. The fans were evenly divided in yelling for the police and La Motta, as punches were thrown by both sides. Order was finally restored and the two friends of La Motta were arrested, held for arraignment before Newark Police Judge Joseph Sugrue, on charges of attempting a riot and resisting arrest. In the excitement, the La Motta brothers slipped away. Joey wasn’t miffed by the post-fight fracas, but rather because he had been previously undefeated in 30 fights. It “sent him into a burn” and a demand for revenge. Only a return fight with Flores would cool him off. The Newark bout had caused so much controversy that the rematch held shortly thereafter at New York’s Park Arena was completely sold out. Flores was Joey’s stepping stone to the title but, he got stopped instead. Joey had 39 fights in 21 months; usually a fight a week. He once had two fights in two days. His record was 32 wins (22 KOs), 5 losses, and 2 draws. An Aventura resident, Joey has been one of our TurnberryDiplomat tennis buddies for the past 20 years.

Nutrition and You BY MICHELLE ISHAKOV As someone who struggled with weight fluctuations throughout all my childhood, it was important for me to find a diet that worked and that I could use to adapt a healthy lifestyle and healthy eating habits. I tried tons of diets in the process. Some people eat to live and others, like myself, live to eat! I have a passion for food, and my weakness is sweets. I always struggled to find foods that I could enjoy but at the same time healthy choices that left me satisfied and not craving more. I developed an interest in nutrition and finding healthy habits that work best for me. I finally found after years of trying different diets that protein is a key component to weight loss and weight management. Another key to staying healthy is to plan what you are going to eat. I began developing a routine of what I was going to be eating the next day which eliminated any confusions as to what I would pick up to eat or falling into the trap of picking processed or junk food in my rush to eat quickly. It becomes a challenge the next morning if you are rushing to get to work while still trying to prepare your meals for the

day. If you fail to plan beforehand, you will plan to fail. When planning meals, I always incorporate foods that contain high quality protein. Protein is the main building block of the body. It actually helps kick start weight loss by reducing the body’s insulin level, which forces the body to naturally burn fat. By regularly eating proteins, you do not have the sugar and carb cravings and your metabolism increases since protein takes more energy to process and digest. In my search for foods with higher protein content and lower sugar and fats, I came across Nutriway, a European manufacturer of high quality protein foods and snacks for weight loss. They carry a wide variety of yummy, healthy, and satisfying foods that are easily accessible to anyone on the go, at the office, or at home. The foods are prepackaged which make it super easy for meal planning. I am Nutriway’s licensed nutritionist/ dietitian. I would love for you to visit us so you can be introduced to our amazing protein products. We are conveniently located at the Promenade Shops in Aventura at 20335 Biscayne Blvd, Unit 34. Look forward to seeing you! Any questions, just contact me at 305438-7775 or email mishakov@mynutriway.com.

Find your perfect smile at Dr. José J. Alvarez’s Oral Facial Comprehensive Care

BY LYNN CARROLL

PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS FOR PROVOCATIVE PEOPLE JJA: Oral Facial Comprehensive care was founded in 2007, but in reality this company is a continuation of the previously known Alvarez and Alvarez Dental Care, PA - a company I created with my wife, Dr. Nolyris Alvarez, back in 1995. With these two companies, we have been in business serving the North Dade and Broward communities for more than 16 years. LC: What’s your philosophy for business success? JJA: Treating others the same way I would like to be treated. Simple, but from the heart.

DR. JOSÉ J. ALVAREZ

LC: Is Oral Facial Comprehensive Care a new dental practice?

August 17 - 23, 2011

LC: What makes your practice stand out? JJA: My goal is to always strive for perfection. My staff and I believe it is essential to listen to our patients and understand their needs and desires. Together, as a team, we can help our patients achieve the smile they desire.

We work to educate all our patients so that they can take an active role in their treatment. After a review of oral findings, we take the time to educate each patient on the ideal plan to maintain their optimum oral health and function, giving them all the options and helping them make an educated choice. No sales pressure; we just give honest and reliable information and let the patients make their own decisions. LC: What’s your background in dentistry? JJA: I have 15 years of professional experience in bone and gum tissue grafting/regeneration techniques and the implant replacement of missing teeth, combined with functional and cosmetic rehabilitation. More than a decade ago, I was among the first dentists in South Florida to pioneer the now popular CEREC (computerized ceramic restoration) procedures. I received a Doctor of Dental Medicine

degree in 1994 from The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and did postgraduate training at Albert Einstein Medical in Philadelphia, and later at the Misch Implant Institute, one of the world’s most advanced training centers in dental implantology. LC: What are your plans for the future? JJA: Short term, we plan to expand our current location, continuing to provide the best that modern dentistry has to offer, with personalized care for each of our patients. In the long term, my goal is to help dental educational institutions. To that end, I am a Silver Donor for the full renovation of Albert Einstein Medical Center’s dental educational facilities. I also hope to leave an example of ethics for future generations in my profession, and to retire knowing that I tried and achieved my best.

What is my injury case worth? BY: JASON NEUFELD, ESQ.

There is a fallacy propagated by insurance companies to make Floridians believe that juries churn out six and seven figure verdicts to paper-cut victims. In reality, those types of verdicts are reserved for the most catastrophic of injuries. The real answer to the question: “What is my injury case worth?” is…. IT DEPENDS. The money a jury awards are broadly categorized as (i) Economic Damages (e.g. past and future medical expenses, past and future lost income, property damage, etc..) and (ii) Non-Economic Damages (e.g. pain and suffering, mental anguish (which will, of course, depend on the severity of the accident and to what degree with the client’s life be negatively affected moving forward; loss of companionship and comfort of a spouse or parent, etc…) But remember that apportionment of liability can also drastically affect the value of a case. The defense, in any personal injury case, will always attempt to place some (if not all) of the blame on the injured party by arguing that the plaintiff

was not acting reasonably under the circumstances. For example, if a jury believes that the injured party is entitled to $100,000 in both economic and non-economic damages, but also finds that the injured party was 20% at fault in the accident, the injured party will only receive $80,000. Bottom line: many factors go into determining what a personal injury case is worth. For the most part those factors cannot be fully calculated until our client has completed treatment with their medical professionals (or has a clear understanding of how much treatment will be needed in the foreseeable future). But having a good personal injury attorney in your corner to monitor your progress, keep files of all recoverable expenses, and keep tabs on insurance companies is an important factor in maximizing the amount of money an injured party is entitled to receive. Let’s Get Back to Work and Restore the American Dream BY CONGRESSWOMAN DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ

As we’ve all watched the back and forth on TV about the debt negotiations or the impasse regarding the Federal Aviation Administration, it seems like Washington just can’t get it right. The challenges facing our country weren’t created overnight and our two political parties have two fundamentally different views of how our country should address them. Given that, it is important to place the debate in perspective. Even before the economic crisis hit in 2008 the signs of trouble for the American family were there. Between 2000 and 2007 under President Bush, health care premiums nearly doubled, the cost of a college education skyrocketed, and median family income dropped by almost $1,000. Around dinner tables across America, families were finding it harder and harder to make ends meet. And then the financial crisis hit. Major financial institutions disappeared overnight, GM and Chrysler both filed for bankruptcy and nearly 800,000 Americans were losing their jobs every month. The scariest part was no one even knew where the bottom was or how much worse it could get. These were the challenges facing our president when he stepped up to take the oath of office on that cold January morning in 2009.

Over the past two years I have devoted myself to helping our president stop the economic bleeding, begin to get the economy turned around and restore the American dream by getting Americans back to work. The result? We’ve had 17 straight months of job growth with 2.4 million private sector jobs created and all three American auto companies are turning a profit, ramping up production, and hiring back American workers. While we’ve come a long way, we still have work to do. The recent crises – from the debt ceiling debates to preventing the Federal Aviation Administration from shutting down – have served as distractions from what we all need to be laser-focused on right now: creating jobs. Sure, we need to be concerned about our national debt and I support the president’s efforts to implement a large and balanced package to do just that, but creating jobs is the best way to address our longterm debt. Economic growth and an increase in employment would reduce spending on social services and boost revenue from corporate profits and get more people working. So, with millions of people still unemployed, I believe that our number one focus should be job creation. But how do we create more jobs? One way is by investing in needed infrastructure improvements. In the Senate there is legislation to create an infrastructure bank, introduced not by just one party, but by one of the most conservative members of the

Senate and one of the most liberal. The Senate also has a major highways bill, once again, introduced by people on opposite sides of the aisle. These programs can get Americans back to work, while investing in the future of our country and improving the lives of every American, yet, in the House we’ve yet to see any serious attempt to spur job creation. America is still a country full of possibility. American ingenuity and the American work ethic are second to none in the world. Which is why it is very frustrating to see the type of debate that we’ve been having in Washington. Rather than focus on job creation, far too many Republicans have been arguing that government is broken, and then set up a false crisis, like the recent debate on raising the debt ceiling to honor our nation’s obligations. The result? Americans feel overwhelmingly that their government is broken as they watch the economy continue to struggle and millions are still unemployed, and rather than focusing on job creation, Congress created a crisis and exacerbated the jobs outlook. As Members of Congress our job is not to make the other party look bad. Our

job is to put political rhetoric aside and come together with our colleagues on the floor of the House of Representatives to have substantive debates about how to tackle the challenges before us, and then vote to do what’s best for our country. That isn’t simply an idea or a rallying call, that is our job, and each of us needs to be willing to step up to the plate to do what we were sent here to do: govern and lead. Only then will we be able to get our economy back on track, honor our obligations to seniors, pay down our debt and reassure our constituents that they can still make it in America. That is what I plan to continue to do, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to come up with solutions that will make it possible to restore the American dream. New law permits veterans designation on Florida driver’s license State of Florida recognizes those who defended the red, white and blue Gov. Rick Scott signed House Bill 1165 to recognize and honor Florida veterans who honorably served their nation, by adding a veteran designation to their driver license or identification card, for those who live in the Sunshine State. “The new feature gives veterans an easy way to show proof of their veteran status, which is not always an easy task,” said Carroll. “We hope that retailers and restaurants offering discounts to military veterans will accept the license with the ‘V’ on it as proof.” At a news conference, hosted by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles at its headquarters in Tallahassee, Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll said the new feature on the driver license is just

one way the state can show appreciation to military veterans. “The Department is honored to provide this service to our military veterans as a way to show our gratitude for their service to our nation,” Jones added. To add the “V” to a license or ID card, veterans can visit any Florida driver license office, to include those operated by county tax collectors. They should plan to: present their DD214, which shows their honorable discharge from active duty and pay a onetime $1 fee, in addition to the replacement or renewal fee.

How to not gain 10 pounds

BY BARI AUERBACH

A health advocacy group recently released a list of foods earning the dubious distinction for “over-the-top” fat and sodium content. If you don’t want to gain weight the best advice is to avoid these diet sabotaging culinary culprits – but the good news is there are alternatives much lower in fat and calories that can actually help you achieve weight loss goals. Instead of indulging in a Fried Cheese melt with four fried mozzarella sticks inside adding up to 1,260 calories, 21 grams of saturated fat and over 3,000 milligrams of sodium – a better choice would be low fat mozzarella with whole grain crackers or melted on a slice of wheat bread or whole grain flat bread with a little bit of tomato sauce if you want to make a pseudo low-cal pizza. Rather than feeling stuffed from a Provolone Stuffed Meatballs with Fettucine dish adding up to 1,520 calories and 43 grams of saturated fat – you can opt for a slimming portion of Jerusalem artichoke or whole wheat pasta with ground white meat turkey meatballs and diced fresh tomatoes. If you’ve got a craving for dessert but want a beach body, avoid that giant slice of Ultimate Red Velvet Cheesecake with a whopping 1,540 calories and 59 grams of saturated fat and pick up an on-the-go sweet guilt-free treat instead: Low cal Pure Protein bars that come in great tasting flavors like blueberry graham and chocolate chip only have about 2 grams of sugar and as much as 20 grams of protein. Ice cream

lovers who don’t want love handles may also want to forsake a peanut butter and chocolate shake with 2,010 calories and 68 grams of saturated fat – and visit one of the neighborhood’s frozen yogurt shops instead. Supermarkets also carry the Skinny Cow line of ice cream treats that are low in fat and calories. The good news for people who like to dine out is many restaurants have added “healthy selection” sections to their menus so you can have the choice to indulge or “avoid the bulge.” If you find yourself unable to “just say no” to decadence, lack of will-power may not be entirely to blame. According to research by the National Academy of Sciences, fatty foods can actually be addictive. In the study, when rats were fed a high fat diet, the fat sent a signal to their brain triggering production of endocannabinoids – a substance similar to the active ingredient in marijuana which can stimulate a craving for more fat. So to stick to a daily diet considered healthful for a typical person with 2,000 calories, no more than 20 grams of fat and below 1,500 milligrams of sodium, the best advice is to “gain knowledge” so you don’t gain unwanted weight. Read nutrition labels and use good judgment when ordering out – avoiding anything described as fried, creamy, sautéed or jumbo – opting instead for baked, broiled, steamed, hold the butter/sauce /dressing and bread basket. Many restaurants also provide nutritional information upon request.

Lee Hodges Tapped to Lead Condominium Concepts Management’s South Florida Offices BY LEE HODGES

When Darlys Walker, CEO of Atlanta-based Condominium Concepts Management, Inc., (CCM) recognized tremendous opportunities for expansion in the Miami/Beaches market, she focused on finding a leader that would bring considerable insight and market knowledge to CCM’s presence in South Florida. The alliance with Lee Hodges, a long-time South Florida resident, with strong ties to the Sunny Isles Beach condominium development community, more than met her criteria. “Lee’s background is a perfect fit for our company. He was active in Sunny Isles Beach working with The Related Group of Florida and the condominium associations of Oceans One and Two, in addition to completing the construction of Ocean Three and negotiating with the condominium association,” she explained. In speaking with Hodges, he explained that his passion for the industry and the environment is long-term. “Prior to getting into condominium development, I was an environmental consultant for the Sampson Oceanfront Park, as well as numerous condominium developments built along Sunny Isles Beach,” he noted. Lee is proud of having led the development of the Sunny Isles Beach Town Center Park and protection of the adjacent wetlands while he built Ocean Four Condominium. Other major residential development projects Hodges has worked on include La Perla, Trump Towers, Sayan, Sands Pointe, Millennium, Pinnacle, St. Tropez, Trump International and Trump Royale, to

name a few. Hodges added that he was also a guest speaker for the Association of South Florida Building Officials at the invitation of the Sunny Isles Beach Building Department. According to Ms. Walker, Hodge’s extensive experience with construction, construction defects, renovations, capital improvements, and preventive maintenance programs, is a perfect fit for our business model. “Lee’s exceptional skill set allows for the successful negotiation between developers, sales and marketing, Assciations/homeowners and contractors, ensuring that each party meets their fiduciary responsibility.” Joining Hodges at Condominium Concepts South Florida will be Adrianne Hartman, heading up new business development. Ms. Hartman has over 10 years experience working with Associations /homeowners of luxury residential projects throughout the South Florida region. “Our industry has changed significantly in the past couple of years; management companies have had to evolve to address the ever changing needs of community associations, with the primary goal of safeguarding their physical and financial stability,” Ms. Walker pointed out. “We have also expanded our services to encompass not only residential, but retail and commercial properties, as well.” Condominium Concept Management’s new South Florida office is located at 1001 Brickell Bay Drive, 27th floor, Miami Florida 33131. • EDUCATIONAL AND TEEN ADVICE • Toby Rose ASK TOBY Is it true that the George Washington University tuition and housing costs are over $50,000? Yes, tuition is $42,860 and housing is $10,120. Would you recommend George Washington University to your students? Absolutely, every year I send several students to GW. There are three different campuses and freshman class size is 2,550; the total undergraduate students at all three locations is 10,000, while graduate students total 14,000. There is so much to do at GW, according to Wanting (Cynthia) Ma, one of my former students who currently attends GW. She is totally in love with Washington DC and loves the fact that GW provides countless opportunities for community service at the multitude of federal agencies. She has also done community service at several embassies and is truly having the time of her life educationally, socially and, most importantly, academically. We are new to the United States and my husband’s job transferred us to Miami. What do you know about getting a learner’s license to drive? A student must be a least 15 years old and provide the following: • Proof of residential address • Proof of social security number • One primary form of identification that shows the date of birth (birth certificate) • One secondary form of identification. • Proof that the student has completed a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education Course. • You must sign a parental consent form. You must do this in the presence of a driver’s license examiner or have it notarized if you will not be present. Your student is required to take the following; • Vision test • Hearing test • A written test that covers road signs and rules It is important to know that your student may only drive during daylight hours for the first three months and then no later than 10 p.m. for all the months thereafter. Your student must drive always with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and occupies the front passenger seat.

What does zero tolerance for DUI mean? Drivers under the age of 21 who are found to have a blood alcohol level of .02 percent or more will have there license suspended for six months if it is a first offense. A second offense will result in a one-year suspension. Refusal to submit to testing when it is a first offense results in a suspension of 12 months. On a second offense, it is an 18-month suspension. My son just told me that his friend is using PCP and he is very upset about it and doesn’t know what to do. Can you please explain what PCP is and what it does and anything else that will help me in helping my son? PCP was developed in the 1950s, but its use was stopped because patients became irrational, delusional and agitated. People today use PCP because it alters their state of mind and produces incredible hallucinations. The taste is awful, quite bitter. It is a white powder; it is very easy to dissolve in water or alcohol. Sometimes people snort PCP powder or swallow tablets or capsules. Many teenagers will take these capsules to school and use them during school hours. One of my students told me that he has seen PCP put on leafy substances similar to marijuana (oregano, mint etc.) and it is smoked. I know all of this seems incredible to believe, but PCP is widely used among our population, and the population I’m most concerned about is the teenagers. According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, an estimated six million U.S. residents aged 12 and older have used PCP at least once in their lifetime. The survey also said that in teenagers 12 to 17, approximately 225,000 use PCP. More than three percent of high school seniors in the United States have used PCP at least once and more than one percent used the drug in the past year. This data was found in the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future Survey (UMMFS). This drug is even more dangerous because it is addictive and can result in unpleasant psychological affects. Many individuals using PCP become violent and suicidal. PCP has more potential risks for teens and preteens than for older adults. A small amount of the drug can negatively affect the hormones associated with normal growth and development. It also has been found to impede the learning process. Toby Rose is president of Toby Rose’s College Prep. She is an independent college counselor, was a Dade County Outstanding Teacher and served as chairperson of the Dade County School Board Academic Advisory Committee. “CAUTION: CHILDREN LISTEN”

Barbara Buxton, J.D., LL.M.

BY KAREN ARONOWITZ, President, United Teachers of Dade

Nursing Home Medicaid • Elder Law & Estate Planning Florida Medicaid Planning & Eligibility Asset Protection • Wills, Trusts, Living Wills Powers of Attorney • Guardianships Probate: Estate Administration

There’s a picture from my childhood that captures six of us in a mock wedding ceremony that my mom created to entertain us one afternoon. She had gotten some netting and sewed it onto a headband to serve as a veil. One of my slips loaded with tulle became the wedding gown. My brother was collared into the groom’s role, sporting a tie of my father’s, a loud, wide tie that I cannot ever recollect my father wearing. It was bright green with parrots on it. Even in a black and white photo, that tie still screams out its tropical colors. We ranged in age from three to ten, a gang of neighborhood kids who had the run of the block, entering unlocked back doors for snacks and bathroom breaks. We drank water from the hose. As I look at that picture, I see the adults these children have become: a civil rights lawyer, a pharmacist, a hair dresser, now deceased. A nail technician. A teacher. One sings karaoke at night, and was a mean trumpet player back in the day. She works at a chiropractor’s office. And their children (now adults): another lawyer, like his dad. A teacher. A bartender. An EMT. A drug addict, lost to us now, her mother

still praying she’ll recover. An electrical engineer, like her dad. A psychologist. The faces of children call to me as another school year begins. I listen as our nation talks about children. I hear children described as the workforce. I hear children spoken about as competitors in a rigged game that they cannot win. I hear children described as winners and losers based on their test scores, even little children whose fingers are just learning to wrap themselves around a pencil. I hear teenagers who arrive in our schools speaking other tongues, having witnessed mayhem we hope never to see, being called lazy and unproductive. We, as a nation, must change our dialogue. We cannot speak of children thus, and we cannot fail to fund our public schools, leaving them without resources, leaving children behind, while a few “escape” to charters. If we believe in children, our public schools must have the support of businesses and communities. They must receive equitable funding from philanthropies and foundations. They must receive state dollars for roofs and painting, for smartboards and laptops, just as the state allocates for charters. Look at the faces of America’s children as they pass before you in their shiny new shoes, with their dreams and hopes for a new school year. They’re listening to us. What will we say about what they are worth? The United Teachers of Dade represents 35,000 teachers and school support personnel in MDCPS. The union is committed to being a leader in creating public school reform, fostering a quality public education for all students and elevating the professional status of teachers, paraprofessionals, office employees, and all school support personnel
