Young Stars grand finale 2010
Last year’s showcase featured eleven young singers, ages 10 through 17, who entertained a full house with everything from Jon bon Jovi songs to opera, bringing the audience to standing ovations time after time. Recording star Chloe Dolandis and Celebrity Emcee David Kiernan introduced each young star, while two former Miss Florida USAs, Jessica Rafalowski and Megan Clementi, escorted the youngsters on and offstage. Celebrity guest Placido Domingo, Jr. served as one of the audition judges as well as singing a duet with one of the young singers. AMC Chairman of the
Board Cliff Schulman was Chairman of the 2010 event, and will continue as the 2011 Chairman. Auditions are scheduled throughout September as a panel of judges determines who will proceed to the final audition in early October. Judges include: Dr. Wilbert “Tee” Holloway, AT&T; Cliff Schulman, Weiss Serota Helfman; Aventura Comm. Billy Joel; Pascal Cohen, FoodInvest Group; Pati Vargas, Pati Vargas Entertainment; Ran Oz, CooLAM Dance Studio; Joanie Edwards, Little Theatre School for Performing Arts; Kiki Sanchez, Recording Artist; Judy Scott, Singer and Chloe Dolandis, Recording Artist. Watch Your Expiration Date
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING We all have an expiration date just like the food, medicines and products that we buy in the stores. The expiration date means that if you use the product past that date it may not be 100% effective. It may not produce the desired or promised result. It may also mean that the item is bad and has decayed or deteriorated. People have expiration dates as well. They are part of their life, relationships and jobs. Everyone has a different date. Knowing this, should motivate you to make the most of your time. Try not to fritter away your life. Try not to waste your talents or your opportunities. Don’t squander, misuse or throw away your life or energy on unimportant and unproductive pursuits. Don’t neglect that which is truly important and has value. With this in mind, spend your time and efforts wisely. Avoid that
which is insignificant, banal and inconsequential. Be discriminating. “Trivial Pursuits is a game not a lifestyle. There are things that you can due to extend the life of most products. For instance, if they are very perishable, you can keep them in the back of the refrigerator where it is colder. If it is a machine or a car, you can make sure that it is serviced and well-maintained on a regular basis. You can take care of it. You can make sure that it has everything it needs to function well. Do whatever you can to take care of yourself and to extend not only your life but the quality of your life. You should be ever mindful of the expiration dates that exist in all aspects of your own existence and in your relationships. Don’t waste your time. Make sure you do something of importance for yourself and for others. Make sure that you experience all of the things you love as much as possible. Do your best and you will live without regrets and you will die without regrets. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. She can be reached at 305-788-4864, 212- 308-0309.

Michele Bachmann, Our Founding Fathers and Slavery
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS With one outstanding exception, presidential candidate Michele Bachmann was wrong in her statement that our Founding Fathers did everything they could to end slavery. The revolutionary generation, with all of their extraordinary talent, could “neither solve nor face the issue of slavery.” They not only wrote slavery into our Constitution, but they also added a provision protecting the future value of existing slaves by barring Congress from even considering the possible barring of the importation of new African slaves for 20 years, until 1808. The one outstanding exception was arguably our greatest Founding Father, the aging Benjamin Franklin. In his youth, Franklin owned slaves, however, in his last years he became president of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society and championed freedom and equal rights for slaves. In 1790, several Quakers petitioned Congress to end slavery and the African slave trade. A Congressional hearing was held on
the most deep-rooted problem facing the new nation. The delegates from New England and several Middle states argued that slavery should end. Southern delegates expressed outrage that the forbidden subject, the African slave trade, was raised prior to 1808, and, “No responsible statesman in the revolutionary era, including Thomas Jefferson, had ever contemplated a biracial American society.” Georgia and South Carolina threatened to secede from the Union because “we cannot do without our slaves.” No member of Congress stepped forward to call their bluff, although it is hard to imagine those two small states defending themselves against foreign interests. To heighten the drama, a petition to end slavery arrived from the aging Franklin, who gave his last advice to the nation shortly before his death, pleading that slavery be ended and a plan for emancipation be adopted. James Madison, financially dependent on slaves and regarded as the Father of the Constitution, stepped forward and gave meaning to the intentions of the Founding Fathers in their “compromise compact” and rejected any Constitutional right by the Federal government to end slavery. Following Madison, the final report passed by Congress “placed any and all debate over slavery as it existed in the South out of bounds forever.”

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month BY MICHAEL PARKER
Senior Vice President, Kahn-Carlin & Co. September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. This certainly means different things to different people. Some of you don’t even want to talk about dying. Others may be more concerned about the uncertainty in today’s economy than spending additional money on insurance. Still many others are sure they have enough coverage. Now is a good time to make sure your insurance game plan is in order. Here are a few good questions to ask yourself: • How would my family survive financially when I am gone? • Do I know how long my current policies are guaranteed to last?
• Is age 65, 75, 85 or 100 the right age to continue coverage? • How much insurance do I really need? • When was the last time I reviewed my insurance with my agent? Life insurance can do wonderful things for people. It can pay for your children or grandchildren’s education, provide a predictable amount of money for your family to live on, help continue a family business and much more. Life Insurance Awareness Month is the right time to remember that your loved ones depend on you. Don’t wait to update your coverage. Contact your agent now. After all, who knows what will happen tomorrow. For more information, call me at 305446-2271 or email me at <mparker@kahncarlin.com>.

‘Senior Fitness & Nutrition Seminar’ Sept. 14, 1pm - 2pm at Olympia Gym BY BARI AUERBACH
“Fitness is a fountain of youth!” A statement proven time and again by the exceptionally fit people often seen at gyms who look at least ten years younger than their actual age. Since one of the first steps to “defying gravity” and looking forever young is to learn more about what happens to our bodies as we age, Olympia Gym in Aventura’s Promenade Shoppes will be hosting a “Senior Fitness & Nutrition Seminar” on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The seminar will feature topics such as “Learn How to Live a Better Quality of Life” with speakers including expert personal trainer Michael McGinn - who might have to present ID to prove he’s eligible for AARP. Olympia Gym owners Peter and Delia Cicale, both proving “60 is sensational”, are also living proof that it’s never too late to learn how to look and feel your best – no matter how old you are. “Looking and staying young is easier than you might think,” Delia emphasizes. “I’ve been exercising since my twenties and now, I’ve been able to maintain my weight and look by best at 60. Pete and I follow a very diversified program incorporating strength training, flexibility and aerobic exercise. Even people in their 90’s have seen up to a 200% improvement in strength within a few weeks of starting an exercise program. “Strength training regularly can stimulate growth hormone production, prevent muscle loss and improve bone strength. A regular exercise program that includes strength training can slow down and reverse many of the effects of aging. Stretching daily to enhance flexibility can also help maintain elasticity in muscles and reduce the risk of joint disease. “Aerobic exercise bolsters immune function, lowers blood pressure and can keep your heart healthy while also stimulating cell growth, enhancing mental condition and increasing brain function in older adults. Exercising also triggers the release of endorphins which can counteract depression. “You can start exercising at any age. Long-term studies show being active can cut the risk of premature death by 50 percent. Proper diet also plays a critical role. An anti-aging diet, rich in antioxidants, can

prevent damage to the heart, arteries and other tissues.” Aside from looking great, Pete and Delia love the way being so fit makes them feel – and experts agree, being active and exercising regularly is probably the number one thing you can do to slow the aging process and improve vitality. “Exercise can be described as a ‘lifesaver’ – an escape from negativity providing the ability to keep up – especially with the young people,” Pete and Delia agree. “It can help you reduce stress, feel revitalized, energetic, happy, stronger, more confident, young and alive. “What is old? Age is what you make of it. At the Senior Fitness & Nutrition Seminar on Sept. 14, Olympia hopes to inspire men and women of all ages and let them know how being active can change your life…‘Just do it!’ and feel the great life benefits.” For more information, phone: 305932-3500 or visit the link www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=18105 7715298436

2012 Cadillac CTS Coupe has new, hightech V-6 engine Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS It’s not hard for me to like a Cadillac; I grew up on them. And I have owned four of them in my adult life. So it will come as no surprise if I tell you that the 2012 Cadillac CTS Coupe is one sweetheart of an automobile. I know there are some who simply will not buy a coupe under any circumstances, and I understand that — difficulty getting into the back seat and not enough room once you get there; not to mention the dearth of headroom. All that aside, this new CTS Coupe is something you have to see to believe, and drive to understand. The styling is a dramatic 2+2 sports coupe design, one that was virtually unchanged from the concept vehicle. It joined the CTS lineup in 2011, rounding out a range of models and body styles that included: Sedan, Wagon and the high-performance V-Series. Continuous
improvements have helped keep the CTS Caddys on the favorites list of American consumers and earned critical praise, including a spot on Car and Driver’s 10 Best list, Popular Mechanics’ Auto Excellence Awards and Automobile magazine’s All-Star list. For 2012, the CTS Coupe gets a lighter, more powerful version of the 318 hp 3.6-liter V-6 with direct injection and continuously variable valve timing. The new V-6 gets an EPAestimated 18/27 mpg, despite having about five percent more horsepower than last year’s model. The CTS Coupe is offered in Base, Performance and Premium Collections, all powered by the 3.6-liter engine, and is available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The CTS Coupe has the same wheelbase as the CTS Sedan, but the overall height that is about two inches lower and the overall length two inches shorter. And while it is based on the same architecture, the CTS Coupe shares only the instrument panel, console, headlights, front fenders and grille with its Sedan sibling. Also for 2912, the Coupe has a new version of the shield-shaped grille, the addition of the side blind-zone alert system, new exterior colors and a new Touring Package edition.
Cadillac CTS Coupe has classic hardtop styling with a steeply slanted windshield and a long, almost horizontal rear window. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
The CTS Coupe has classic hardtop styling with no conventional B-pillars and the windshield is slanted at a faster angle, combining with a long, almost horizontal rear window to create a dramatic profile. The lower front fascia is sculpted with unique brake-cooling vents, while the rear fascia has lower mesh grilles and the center-outlet exhaust with twin dihedralshaped tips pass through the rear fascia. A rear spoiler is integrated into the cen-

Negro League paintings to be exhibited at Freedom Tower BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
Because the mother of renowned artist Kadir Nelson lives in South Miami-Dade, Miami has been added to the list of cities that will exhibit his magnificent paintings about the Negro Baseball League. The exhibit is entitled We Are the Ship and features paintings and sketches by Nelson, celebrated artist and illustrator. The exhibit will open in the Downtown Miami Freedom Tower on Nov. 3 with an invitation-only party, then will be open to the public Nov. 4 through Jan. 8. The paintings will continue on tour of the U.S. through 2013. The exhibit includes a 5x5-foot painting of Jackie Robinson, and two other paintings have been used as U.S. postage stamps to pay homage to the Negro League. Nelson also wrote a book entitled We Are The Ship: The Story of the Negro Baseball League. “The history of the league was big to me,” Nelson says. “I wanted to paint in an epic format. I wanted to exhibit them, too.” Nelson spent eight years researching, painting and writing the book. After successfully arranging a tour for the paintings, the exhibit initially was slated to bypass Miami
because there was no venue available to house it. “When my mother found out about the tour, she wanted to bring it to Miami,” Nelson says. “I wanted the exhibit to go where Negro League baseball was played.” When she learned the exhibit would bypass Miami for the lack of a venue, Nelson’s mom, Emily Gunter, decided she would find a location. She had heard about the Freedom Tower and she visited historic building to see for herself whether it was a suitable place to exhibit the paintings. “I had heard the history of the building,” she says. “It’s the Ellis Island of Miami. This is nothing but perfect. The Cubans and Negros were the ones who came together to form the Negro league because the dark Cubans were not allowed to play in the major leagues.” Gunter is organizing a series of events around the exhibit, including a fundraiser for Urgent Inc., which runs an after-school program at Goulds Elementary, as well as intergenerational programs, programs for grandparents raising grandchildren and housing programs for low income families. This school year, Gunter will work at Goulds two

It will help pay for all of the programs that we do now.”

Nelson will lecture at the New World School of the Arts Nov. 8, speak at the Kendall Campus Fall Fest Nov. 9 and at the Miami Book Fair International. The exhibit will run through both Art Basel and the Book Fair. One of the events will be on Dec. 10 at Dorsey Park, where the Negro League played in Miami. There will be an unveiling of a mural painted by children and free shuttle buses will transport people between Dorsey Park and the Freedom Tower. The event also includes the rededication of the park, and area Little League teams are invited to attend in uniform. Nelson is an award winning illustrator and has won a Coretta Scott King Award and a Caldecott Honor. He recently won a Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators for his book Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans and his painting of Michael Jackson’s life is featured in the singer’s last CD entitled Michael. Women’s ‘Hour of Power’ at Morton’s The Steakhouse On August 4th, dozens of women gathered at Morton’s The Steakhouse to celebrate the first of many “Women’s Hour of Power”. This exciting business card exchange was created by the Women’s Business Council for members to network while enjoying a fixe priced Happy Hour menu. The Council selected Morton’s as their first venue as the steakhouse offers an extensive list of specially priced bar bites, select beers and cocktails. As a result, it’s comes at no surprise why members poured in as quickly as they did. As attendees casually rotated tables to greet one another, a number of guests enjoying drinks at Morton’s Bar 12.21 grew curious to learn more about the “Women’s Hour of Power”. As a result, these guests signed up to network on the spot. As Jazz music echoed in the background, guests enjoyed fine drinks and munched on a number of bar bites including Mini Prime Cheeseburgers and Crab Cakes BLT’s. The idea of the “Women’s Hour of Power” was created by the Women’s Business Council aiming for members to increase their network of contacts thus helping in creating and expanding business opportunities. Evelyn Carrillo, Sales Manager to Lucky Strike stated that the “Women’s Hour of Power can definitely be marked as a successful event. While net-
Susana and Wendy Unger
working [we] (accompanied by Cindi George, another Sales Manger to Lucky Strike) ended up meeting a contact there that is interested in having an event at Lucky Strike Lanes; so, it was definitely a profitable experience”. It is without a doubt that this group of business savvy women in attendance shared a similar notion as Carrillo. Within the first hour, the majority of them had already exchanged and collected a handful of business cards. The ambiance and the vibes portrayed that night was exactly what the Council had hoped for when meticulously planning the event. It was imperative for the Council to create a comfortable environment where members would have an opportunity to exchange business and leadership advice. Chris Holmes and Diana Luna of Miami Advertising Company stated “We loved the great bites, the energy, and the vibes at Morton’s for the Women’s Hour of Power. There’s a significant aura developing in the Women’s Business Council of the Miami Beach Chamber. These women are taking over!” Wendy Unger, Membership Services Manager of the Chamber also expressed that “[We] had a great networker at Morton’s. Women who had never been to any of our Council events before joined and met with seasoned members; it was a powerful networking opportunity for all”. As Happy Hour came to an end, one lucky attendee won the door prize. Upon arrival, all members had submitted their business cards in hopes of winning. This lucky attendee was none another than Shaneil Sibblies, Catering Director to Bill Hansen Catering who won a gift certificate for dinner at Morton’s. “This is so great”, she said. “I live in this building – just upstairs! I’m definitely having dinner here this weekend!” For information of the Women Business Council of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, contact Susana Peñaranda, liaison to the council at (305) 674-1300 or at susana@miamibeachchamber.com.

Facebook: A unique marketing opportunity for your small business Maximize internet traffic and you can increase your income BY JUAN COLOME
In November 2006, Facebook pages were released as an advertising platform. Before the launch, internet marketers simply purchased advertising to promote their products and services. Thanks to Facebook, internet marketers now have an entirely unique opportunity to market products and services. The great thing about Facebook is that it is designed to encourage brand loyalty. Once you have a satisfied customer, that customer will be able to visit your page repeatedly and become a fan of your business. In fact, fans can even write what they think of your products or services on your Facebook page “wall.” You will now be able to build a presence on Facebook for your business, rather than just merely creating or posting an advertisement. Facebook encourages people to visit your page and spread the word about your business.
As a business owner, you will also be able to encourage interaction with your customers by posting photos, videos and participating in group discussions. You can also send updates to your fans about new products and services you are offering. You can add different kinds of applications, which will further encourage repeat visits and more people to join your group, or become a fan of your page. Basically, Facebook offers word of mouth advertising – for FREE! With more than 700 million active subscribers on Facebook and counting, you will see that advertising on Facebook is definitely worth your time. With figures such as these, every internet marketer realizes that this is a tremendous marketing opportunity. Facebook allows you to interact with other people. You can make new friends, or new customers, and encourage them to spread your good news. With its highly interactive features, you will see that advertising is easier and very effective on Facebook. You will generate more targeted traffic to your site and ultimately, your business. With this comes increased sales and profits. Miami man writes book about his daughter’s miraculous recovery from cancer BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD
In July 2007, four-year-and-a-half-year-old Bella Torres became paralyzed overnight. Her father, Raymond Rodriguez-Torres says she had no symptoms of an illness when it happened, although she had complained of a stomach ache previously. That complaint had been checked out by her pediatrician who ran tests that ruled out any problems. “That was the first sense of something seriously wrong,” he says. He rushed home from his meeting in Orlando and met his family at Miami Children’s Hospital, where his father had been chief of staff for 16 years. “They performed a lumbar puncture,” he says. “It came back positive for a disease she didn’t have – Guillain-Barre syndrome — she started treatment for that.” He was horrified, since he knew about the disease as his father had a bout with it years before. In its worst case, Guillain-Barre could cause the respiratory system to be paralyzed. The experimental treatment his father received is now the standard treatment that is given over five days. But on the fifth day, they could see the paralysis was not improving. The doctors suggested one more test. The test showed Bella had Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma in the form of enormous tumor wrapped around her spine. It’s a rare childhood cancer that’s very aggressive and very malignant. “She had cancer in her jaw, her foot, her shoulder, her rib, her hip, her knee, her hand and later in her brain,” Rodriguez-Torres says. The doctors told Rodriguez-Torres and his wife Shannah that Bella would never walk again and with Stage Four cancer, she probably wouldn’t live. But the family was not willing to give up without a fight. “What we decided to do is to try a chemo protocol for six weeks and see if it changed,” he says. “Bella began therapy that afternoon. I
BOOKS found myself in the greatest point of despair.” Until Bella’s illness, Rodriguez-Torres was not a religious man. Raised in the Catholic Church, he was a lapsed Catholic, but during those dark days, he believes God talked to him through a friend and told him he needed to have an army of people to pray for his daughter. “When I hung up the phone I felt different,” he says. His brother and sister-in-law developed the website <www.PrayForBella.com> to help bring people together to pray for his daughter. And people all over the world did pray. “They prayed from as far away as Japan and Australia,” he says. “We even had conference calls where we would all pray in unison, together.” After the first round of chemo, the tumor had shrunk 94 percent and then a scan showed the other areas of her body were cancer free. “Today Bella is the only known survivor of her kind of cancer in the world,” he says. “She can walk, jump and play. She is a cheerleader at her school. Bella’s case was investigated by the Catholic Church and is officially known as a miracle.” Rodriguez-Torres believes that Virgin Mary also made several visitations based on things his daughter told him, things that were impossible for the child to know otherwise. “I don’t know why we were chosen for this,” he says. The experience changed his life. He became a certified life coach and he coaches families of childhood cancer patients pro bono. His book Why Not Me is the publisher’s best seller and he speaks at churches and events about what happened. “I am the happiest man you will speak to today tomorrow and the next day,” he says.
