Dennis Rodman promotes All-Star Basketball Camp at Gallery Art reception
hen two powerhouse organizations, the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Aventura Marketing Council, joined forces for an evening networking reception hosted by Ken Hendel, owner of Gallery Art in Aventura, it’s only natural to expect another ‘powerhouse’ to be there! Dennis Rodman, NBA alumni, character extraordinaire, and most recently featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, joined the reception to talk about the upcoming Warren Henry All-Star Basketball Camp Aug. 12 – 15 at the Michael-Ann Russell JCC. For the fourth consecutive year, boys and girls ages 8 – 17 will enjoy learning some cool basketball moves from stars such as Rodman, Eddie Jones, Norris Cole, James Jones, Tim Hardaway, Keyon Dooling, Kenny Anderson, Mark Strickland and Mario Chalmers, with some surprise basketball stars showing up during the week. The youngsters learn about ball handling, triple threat, rebounding, court spacing, passing and how important it is to work as a team, while also learning about positive attitudes, staying in school and saying no to drugs and alcohol. “I just love working with kids and seeing their confidence grow as they learn new basketball moves,” said Rodman. been the title sponsor of this camp since its inception, and said, “This camp provides South Florida youngsters with a great opportunity to grow and learn, and we’re so pleased to be able to provide camp scholarships to children from our local charities.” Almost 100 guests were enjoying an array of delicious hors d’oeuvres amidst beautifully- framed originals, oils, acrylics, limited edition prints, glass and bronzes by today’s most esteemed and collectible artists, when Rodman walked in and started talking with the guests. We couldn’t tell if the guests were more thrilled to take photos with Rodman or view the artwork of Andy Warhol, Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, Peter Max and Leroy Neiman displayed throughout the
8,000 sq. ft. showroom! CPA Alan Lips, partner in Gerson, Preston, Robinson & Company, maintains a leadership role in both organizations as the current Chairman of the Board of the Miami Beach Chamber and a member of the Executive Committee of the Aventura Marketing Council. “It was nice to see so many great people getting to know each other from two incredibly functional and effective business networking organizations.” Ken Hendel added, “The camaraderie between the two organizations was outstanding...exemplifying first-class members from my two favorite organizations! The evening was delightful and entertaining and Gallery Art was extremely proud to be host site, something we love to do for many different groups and events.” For more information on Gallery Art, GallArt.com; Miami Beach Chamber, MiamiBeachChamber.com or Aventura Marketing Council, AventuraMarketing Council.com. already won eight tickets. "I recommend membership in the AMC because I find it extremely rare to be a part of a networking group that can provide regular interaction with high- level business owners and key decision makers. I've been able to grow my business, and I think my clients and contacts in the community could benefit as well." Julie Baroniel, Financial Advisor with Mass Mutual, has referred three new members to date, winning twelve tickets to the November 19th symphony performance. Julie is already thinking of additional businesses she can refer, and said, "I recommend the Aventura Marketing Council because I feel very comfortable when I come to their meetings -- that's why I decided to join! I believe in AMC so much that I have my clients, also friends, joining because I think it will be as beneficial for them as it has been for me." The AMC has almost 500 companies and organizations throughout South Florida as members, and provides 8 - 10 FREE networking opportunities every month, from their Breakfast Meetings with 200 members attending to their famous SpeedBiz offering the best one-on-one networking in town, to the extremely valuable Technology Committee where members can recoup their membership investment immediately with the free advice given. AMC members understand the benefits of membership! Peabody-trained Artistic Director and Conductor, Sebrina Maria Alfonso, will be
directing the November 19th concert “A Soul Unfettered,” featuring the music of Elgar (Introduction & Allegro for Strings); Barber (Cello Concerto, Opus 22); and Schubert (Symphony No. 9 "The Great"), as well as another two concerts at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on February 1st and March 28th. Alfonso founded the orchestra as her dream of bringing classical music to Key West where she was born and raised. As the first Cuban-American to be invited to conduct Cuba's premiere orchestra where she received standing ovations, she has become a great advocate for American music. Now in its 16th season, the orchestra has expanded its programming to include Miami-Dade (Aventura), Broward (Fort Lauderdale) and Palm Beach (Delray Beach) venues for performances. The orchestra provides educational events, including free concerts reaching over 2,000 elementary schoolchildren through its Symphony in the Schools Program, currently only available in Palm Beach, but planning to expand to other counties. They also understand the value of partnering with outstanding artists, such as the Vienna Boys Choir this past February and Zuill Bailey, one of the premiere cellists in the world. Pain in the Brain
Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING Scientists are now reporting that they are able to actually see pain in your brain on a brain scan. They can measure its intensity and they can tell if the prescribed pain medication is relieving the pain. This is an amazing breakthrough. This will help many people especially non-verbal individuals like babies, stroke victims or dementia patients and those who are vocally paralyzed. Since these individuals are unable to express themselves, this new technology will identify those who are experiencing pain and disclose the intensity of that pain. This development will allow doctors to adjust the amount of medication needed and prevent addiction and over-doses. It will also allow them to accurately verify disability claims. It would be wonderful if the next great breakthrough was a machine that could measure pain in your mind. Mental anguish and distress are definitely a source of pain for many, many people. Mental suffering
can be equally debilitating and destructive. Unlike the medical machine for physical pain, the current system places the responsibility on you, the patient or client, to help effect a mental cure. Unfortunately, many people seeking help for or relief from mental suffering do not want to participate. They want a machine like the medical machine to determine their level of distress and prescribe the correct medication to fix it. Until such a machine becomes a reality you need to be proactive in your own life. You need to be your own scientist. You have to be open and willing to help your therapist and doctor identify the source of your discomfort. You need to allow and tolerate some uncomfortable feelings of vulnerability and anxiety. You have to actively participate in your own recovery. You need to trust yourself and your own incredible power to heal. You need to believe that you can be well. Reject any belief or concern that your current situation is permanent. Keep seeking help. Keep an open mind. Don’t despair and never give up. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. ‘I AM A Innocent Man’
Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS In 2009, The American Bar Association honored two relatively unknown black lawyers who, because of their tenacity and bravery, changed the U.S. justice system forever “by paving the way for civil rights protections.” As a reward for their efforts, they saw “their client murdered, their practices destroyed, their families threatened and their homes burned to the ground.” In 1906 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Ed Johnson, a Negro, was wrongfully convicted of raping Nevada Taylor, a white woman. The verdict was not based upon credible evidence but the result of the community so poisoned by racism that there was no way the defendant could have received a fair trial. Judge McReynolds promptly announced sentence - Johnson was to hang. His assigned lawyers did not appeal. Because of the possible negative impact on their practice, two black law partners Noah Parden and Styles Hutchins, reluctantly agreed to take the appeal. When asking for a stay
pending appeal, McReynolds scolded them, “Do you think a Negro lawyer could possibly know the law better than a white lawyer? When State Court appeals for a stay failed, Parden and Hutchins filed an unusual petition - to the Federal Court alleging violations of Johnson’s constitutional rights. Judge McReynolds commented that their appeal was frivolous because “federal judges do not have the authority to issue stays in state criminal cases.” For the first time in history, a black lawyer was lead counsel in a case before the Supreme Court. Parden argued before Justice John Marshall Harlan for the stay pending appeal. When news spread of Harlan’s granting the stay, a lynch mob, with Sheriff Joseph Shipp’s complicity, stormed the jail, put a noose around Johnson’s neck, demanding his confession of guilt. When Johnson stated his innocence, the mob hanged him. Sheriff Shipp and his deputies were charged with contempt of court for failure to protect Johnson. Defendants were found guilty and sentenced to jail. The Supreme Court eventually affirmed every one of Parden’s constitutional arguments, including a federal constitutional right to a fair trial in state criminal proceedings. Parden stated, “Nothing less than our civilized society was at stake.”

Mount Sinai Medical Center honors Wallack family generosity In June, Mount Sinai Medical Center honored Florence and the late Irving Wallack, and paid tribute to their son David for his generosity to the medical center. The event celebrated the Wallack family’s commitment to healthcare in the Miami Beach community with a dedication on the pedestal of a sculpture that stands outside the medical center’s emergency room. The Wallacks are among South Beach’s most respected families, having helped shape the city’s hotel industry and the Ocean Drive landscape. In the1970s, Irving innovated Miami Beach’s first co-op conversion of apartments on South Beach. David Wallack took up his parents’ mantle of innovation and established the Eastern Sun, Florida’s first commercial-sized adult congregate living facility. Today, the space is now known as Mango’s Tropical Café, a world famous South Beach landmark drawing more than a million patrons a year. The restaurant is part of Mount Sinai’s community partnership program, which consists of area businesses that help raise the much-needed funds to support South Florida’s largest private, independent notfor-profit teaching hospital. By participating in this program, David and Josh give their patrons an opportunity to join them in supporting Mount Sinai’s mission to provide quality healthcare to the community. “Mount Sinai is our hospital – it’s our community’s hospital,” said David. “And we are proud to be a partner in this innovative program.”
The Wallack Family
As a result of the Wallack family’s generosity, David and Josh are corporate members of the Society of Mount Sinai, which includes the medical center’s most generous philanthropic supporters. The Wallack Family Foundation is also part of the Founders of Mount Sinai, the medical center foundations’ most time-honored organization. “If he were here today,” Sonenreich said, “Irving Wallack would surely be proud of his son and his grandson for all they have accomplished and for their commitment to healthcare in our community.” The sculpture is prominently displayed within the Mount Sinai campus. The inscription on the northern side of the pedestal reads as follows - Dedicated to Florence & Irving Wallack by David Wallack and Family. The inscription on the southern side of the pedestal reads - Dedicated by Mango’s Tropical Café South Beach.

Novecento brings authentic taste of Argentina to Town Center Aventura Town Center Aventura, a lifestyle destination located just south of Aventura Mall, recently announced a fall opening for Argentinian bistro Novecento. Known for its exciting atmosphere, award-winning cuisine and wide selection of premium Argentinean wines, Novecento’s Town Center Aventura location will be the company’s newest addition to its ten existing locations in Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, and the U.S. Novecento’s cuisine is a refined co-existence of Argentine, Mediterranean and Pan-Latin flavors heightened by French techniques and indepth attention to presentation and detail. Additional highlights include prominent chefs’ tables and a brick oven. “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate our 11th location with passionate fans in Aventura. These necessary resources will increase the chance of high school completion and address the dropout crisis. “We want to invest in organizations that are making a measurable impact on the students they serve and Communities In Schools is doing just that,” said Maria Johnston, Regional Director-External Affairs, AT&T Florida. “By coupling this contribution with the power of our employees, we hope to take our collaboration to the next
level and help even more students graduate high school ready for college and careers.” With support from AT&T last year, nearly 425 Communities In Schools of Miami students received mentoring, tutoring and counseling services. The result? Ninetyfive percent of the students remained in school, 84 percent improved their grades and 84 percent demonstrated reduced behavioral incidents in schools. “AT&T has demonstrated unparalleled leadership in supporting efforts to create a 21st century education system and American workforce,” said Elizabeth Mejia, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Miami. “We are grateful for AT&T’s support and long-standing collaboration.” The recent donation to Communities In Schools of Miami is part of a $2 million AT&T contribution that will boost the impact and sustainability of the Communities In Schools network nationwide. Since 2008, AT&T and the AT&T Foundation have provided more than $8.5 million in funding to Communities In Schools and local affiliates. The support is part of AT&T Aspire, a $350 million commitment to education, and one of the largest-ever corporate commitments to address high school success and workforce readiness.

Iconic Chevrolet Impala is redesigned for 2014 Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR
LET’S TALK CARS Chevrolet completely redesigned the Impala for 2014. Designers gave the iconic flagship sedan some head-turning styling cues, more interior room and modern technologies never before available on the Impala. The Impala is new from the ground up, with a muscular design reminds you a bit of earlier Impalas while embracing Chevy’s modern styling. This is the 10th generation of the Impala, one of the industry’s most enduring nameplates. It has ranked as America’s best-selling full-size sedan since 2004 and total sales topped 169,000 in 2012. The new Impala is long and low, with a wind-swept profile that suggests motion, and has a range of 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels tailored to the body for the perfect stance. At the front, low-profile projectorbeam HID headlights (and LED daytime running lights on LTZ) sweep around the corners and frame the wide grille, while the power dome hood conveys the power under
the hood. Sculpted coves in the body sides and the short deck lid complement the overall design. Diagonal dual-signature taillights and chrome-outlined exhaust outlets (on LTZ) complete the rear end. For 2014, the Impala comes with 10 standard air bags and such available safety technologies as full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, crash imminent braking, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, rear camera and rear-park assist. The Impala’s V-6 engine ranks with the most powerful naturally aspirated engines in the segment. The new and responsive electric power steering system and enhanced suspension provides owners with a positive driving experience. Inside, the all-new cabin has more front and rear legroom, generous storage area and Smartphone-influenced connectivity with next-generation MyLink. It’s also quieter and has a greater emphasis on comfort, including BOSE active noise cancellation technology on four-cylinder models. The 2014 Impala builds on Chevrolet’s signature dual-cockpit interior with greater attention to detail and upscale features — seen in everything from the wraparound flow of the instrument panel into the door panels

and the available ambient lighting, to the soft feel of the materials and the premium appearance of the seats’ stitching. The instrument panel integrates a dynamic instrument cluster with a standard 4.2-inch color display with reconfigurable features for the driver information center. An eight-inch touch screen with concealed storage behind it is matched with the available Chevy MyLink system on LT and LTZ models. The Impala is offered with three engine choices, including two four-cylinder pow-
ertrains and a 3.6-liter V-6 engine. An Ecotec 2.4-liter engine with eAssist will be available at the end of the year and deliver an estimated 35 mpg on the highway. The MSRP on the 2014 Chevy Impala ranges from $26,725 to $35,770. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. Mount Sinai to Host Skin Health Awareness Day Free Skin Screenings Provided
Florida has the second highest incidence of melanoma in the United States, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. In addition, melanoma is responsible for approximately 75 percent of all skin cancers. However, because early detection of skin cancer can mean the difference between life and death, Mount Sinai Medical Center is hosting a Skin Health Awareness Day to provide free screenings to the community. The event will take place on Thursday, August 15, from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mount Sinai physicians will administer a complete, non-invasive skin check – a visual inspection of moles, freckles, marks and uneven pigmentation. Participants will also receive a complimentary UV sun detector wristband. Made of environmentally safe silicon, the bracelet monitors the wearer’s exposure to UVA and
UVB rays, which lead to premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. The bracelet, which is water and sweat proof, will change colors alerting the wearer to reapply sunscreen or seek shade. For more information about Mount Sinai Medical Center, visit www.msmc.com. To attend this free event, please RSVP by calling 305-535-3369.

United Teacher of Dade starts 2013-2014 school year with Back-to-School Megafest BY FEDRICK INGRAM, President, United Teachers of Dade
During the 2013-14 school year, the United Teachers of Dade plans to re-define their commitment to the education of students and to strengthening relationships with local communities throughout Miami-Dade County. On August, 17, 2013, United Teachers of Dade is hosting a Back-To-School MegaFest inviting parents, teachers and students to come together right before the new school year starts. UTD will be partnering with many premier organizations within the community to provide children’s activities, informational tables, music, entertainment, food and prizes. Many special and surprise guests will be part of the afternoon’s festivities. While most of the students and their teachers in Miami-Dade County have enjoyed a much-deserved summer break, UTD President Fedrick Ingram has been getting events ready for back-to-school with a goal to build a stronger connection within the community and to help reach out to its members during the summer. Shortly after Ingram took office in May 2013, he started with a countywide RESPECT tour visiting over 350 schools along with UTD First Vice President Thomas Gammon and UTD Secretary/ Treasurer Karla Hernandez-Mats. “Everything we do at UTD is for the
students of Miami-Dade,” said President Ingram. “Our goal as education professionals is to help educate Miami, and part of this initiative includes building stronger ties within our local communities, networks and membership. UTD hopes to be able to provide this connection to the community throughout the school year.” Fedrick Ingram has been recognized as the 2006 Miami-Dade County Public Schools Teacher of the Year, and served as a band director at Miami Carol City Senior High School before serving as an officer of United Teachers of Dade. He is also a graduate of Miami Jackson Senior High. “I am a true believer in what public education can do for our children,” said Ingram. “United Teachers of Dade is committed to working in our local communities with leaders, businesses, clergy, parents and anyone who is determined to build great schools. We look forward to MegaFest and many more future events that define what a true community partnership is all about.” UTD represents over 32,000 school employees in Miami that work to educate over 370,000 students in more than 400 schools. UTD wants children, their parents, and teachers to feel good about their Miami-Dade public schools while reinforcing that education is the key to a brighter future. Miami-Dade County schools have won national recognition and awards, largely in part due to the hard work of the teachers and support personnel who work with students every day. The school system was recently awarded “The Broad Prize”, a top level honor for public education systems. The United Teachers of Dade Back-to-School MegaFest is free for all and is open to the public August 17, 2013, at the U.S. Century Bank Arena at Florida International University from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Details about UTD’s Back-ToSchool MegaFest can be found online at www.UTD.org.

Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico Miami Campus welcomes Fall 2013 incoming students BY RAQUEL GARCIA
Since Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) Miami Campus was founded in 2001started operations in Miami in 2003, nine graduate commencement ceremonies have happened at the Doral school. The working professionals focused university is gearing up for the fall trimester when 200 plus students will be enrolled in online classes towards bachelors and masters degree programs in business administration and computer science. “We offer an extraordinary opportunity for working professionals who started their degree out of the United States and never finished, or for those who want to come back to school,” said Campus Director and professorProfessor, Martin Arroyo. “Students can work online at their own pace while managing work and home.” The internationally recognized and accredited university’s original San Juan, Puerto Rico campus opened more than 45 years ago in 1966 and today boasts over 5,000 students. The success spilled stateside and led to the Doral school opening over a decade ago as well as an Orlando location that opened in 2003. Campus Director Arroyo attributes the success of PUPR to the Institutions accreditation, the convenience of course work scheduling options for busy professionals and the qualifications of the faculty. “Classes are divided into six week trimester sessions,” said explains Director Arroyo. “That means a student can com-
plete between three and six credits per semester trimester working at their own individual pace. There are three maximum trimesters possible for the academic calendar year, plus summer school session.” “Our faculty is composed of highly experienced and respected executives and practitioners of the matters what they teach here at the university. Many have been so successful in their professional practices they now have consultancy businesses which keeps them up to date in their respective fields.” Campus Director Arroyo’s passion for education has kept him teaching and guiding students for over 21 years. “I teach two entry levels courses in accounting Accounting,” said Mr. Arroyo. “I love to teach the basic courses because for students to be successful they must master these fundamental principles and skills. I enjoy helping to make sure they learn from the very beginning how to be successful.” The Middle States Council on Higher Education accredited the university—-the same accreditation as FIU, Nova, and Keiser—-is also licensed and accredited by the Commission for Independent Education of the State of Florida. “We are what students are looking for,” said Mr. Arroyo. “We are a caring institution motivated by the love of education and sharing of -knowledge to make students successful. We are here to collaborate with them to make their dreams a reality.” For more information call 305-4188000 or visit pupr.edu.
