BY BARI AUERBACH

ust before the Miami Dolphins first pre-season game against the Cowboys, hundreds of business and community leaders huddled for an Aventura Marketing Council breakfast meeting featuring a 2013 season preview with Kim Bokamper, former Dolphins linebacker and CBS4 Sports Anchor; and broadcaster Jesse Agler, host of “Finsiders.” Aventura Auto Gallery/ Aventura Honda were the title sponsors and host site of this full-house meeting, while partner sponsors were Airstron Air Conditioning/Refrigeration, Parksman Parking and Allstate Insurance/M. Priestman Desjardins Insurance Group. When the mic was passed to Bokamper, he provided an historical retrospective of how the Miami Dolphins became one of the greatest franchises in the NFL with two Super Bowl wins and the legendary 1972 undefeated season. He encouraged the audience to support their team, saying “The Dolphins are ready to make this community proud--they’ve acquired great players and a great coach - but fans really need to participate. Go to the stadium and help make it tough for the teams coming to play in South Florida. The Dolphins are on a meteoric rise with things changing for the better. It’s going to be a great ride and now’s the time to jump on and enjoy it!” Agler added, “Dolphins excitement is taking off! Over 22,000 people were recently at the July 29 scrimmage game, and A full-house gathers at another monthly Breakfast Meeting

we’d love to see you at Sun Life Stadium for the regular season!” He spoke about the “Three Game Pack” to save over individual ticket prices, how to choose preferred seating, purchase playoff tickets and earn Fins Club points. For more information, phone: 888-FINS-TIX. Everyone was also invited to join in the Nov. 2-3, 2013 Dolphins Cycling Challenge benefitting the Sylvester Cancer Center. To register, visit ridedcc.com. During the meeting, Maxine Lopez VP of Business Development for Airstron, noted that for over 27 years, Airstron has provided quality, value and superior service to our customers in the South Florida area. In 2010, the City of Aventura hosted Mayor Sergio Massa from the city of Tigre, Argentina. In recent national primaries held in Argentina on August 11, Sergio Massa was the big victor for National Congressman from the Province of Buenos Aires, winning with 35.5% of the vote, defeating the ruling party candidate by almost six points. Recent polling indicates that his lead in the Province of Buenos Aires is increasing in advance of the general elections scheduled for October 27. Most importantly, since the Province of Buenos Aires is the largest electoral district representing 37% of total voters on the national level, Sergio Massa’s victory has national implications. His favorability rating across Argentina is rising as well, catapulting him to the national stage as one of the major candidates for President of Argentina in 2015.

Tea and Teapots

Patricia C. Frank FRANKLY SPEAKING You cannot pour tea from an empty teapot. This statement sounds obvious and simplistic but in real life and in real relationships, it is not obvious at all. Many people spend their whole lives being disappointed and sometimes hurt by their relationships. They fail to understand the basics of interacting with others. Their expectations are unrealistic. They are ego-centric and focused on their own needs, at all times. When those needs are not met by others, they assume the worst. This sets off a chain reaction of negative thoughts and actions and sometimes, accusations. This muddles the issue. Most difficulties occur because you ask too much from someone, and /or your own needs are too great. If you want a lot from someone you may be asking too much from them. People can only give what they

have. If they don’t give it, they may not have it to give. They are not selfish, mean or stingy. They are just empty. Don’t jump to erroneous conclusions. Don’t assume the worst about the person. Don’t assume the worst about yourself. It has nothing to do with your self-worth or whether or not you deserve better or more from someone. Every teapot is a different size and holds a different amount of tea. Some teapots have no tea at all. There is no tea to pour. It is a sign of emotional maturity when you become aware of this truism and accept it. It is a sign of emotional maturity when you can understand that it has nothing to do with you. It is also not the fault of the teapot. For whatever reason, no one took the time to brew the tea. Maybe, you are in their life because you are the one to brew the tea. Maybe, you are the one to give to them and not just receive from them. Maybe you are the one to fill their teapot so that it will not be empty anymore. Patricia Frank is a Licensed Psychotherapist. August Bondi: Jewish guerrilla fighter against slavery

Bob Diamond HISTORICALLY YOURS Every American History student knows about John Brown, the radical abolitionist, who remains one of the most controversial figures in America history. Historians have argued whether Brown was a freedom fighter or an outlaw? The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 decreed that the settlers in the Kansas territory would decide by vote whether Kansas would be slave or free slave. At first, the anti-slavery forces were a majority, however, on election-day, “some 5,000 heavily armed pro-slavery forces from Missouri swarmed the territory, outvoted the majority and elected a pro-slavery legislature. Once in control, the pro-slavery forces launched violent attacks against the anti-slavery settlers. Brown became enraged by the pro-slavery government’s mistreatment of the anti-slavery majority.” Much is known about Brown, who then led the anti-slavery Free State forces in “Bloody Kansas,” a prelude to the Civil War. Brown reached the height of his

notoriety in his raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in 1859, for which he was executed. According to the American Jewish Historical Society, “Little is known, however, that three immigrant Jews were among Brown’s small band of antislavery fighters in Kansas: Jacob Benjamin, from Bohemia, Theodore Wiener, from Poland, and August Bondi, from Vienna.” Of the three, “Bondi left the most endearing mark, as he brought his idealism of freedom to his adopted country. The three Jews fought with Brown at the Battle of Black Jack, near Palmyra, Kansas, where they captured fortyeight pro-slavery fighters. Bondi’s account of the battle is recorded for posterity. He recalled marching up the hill with Wiener (beside Brown), with the bullets whistling, while the two Jews expressed their emotions back and forth in the Hebrew language. Bondi later wrote admirably about Brown, “We were united …. by the man who prepared a handful of men for laying the foundation of a free Commonwealth.” Bondi, a guerilla fighter against slavery, remained true to his convictions. When the Civil War broke out, Bondi was one of the first to enlist, serving admirably in the Kansas Cavalry. He settled in Salina, Kansas, where he was “known for his political integrity and idealism.”

Are We Heading for Sinkhole City BY RUSSEL LAZEGA, Attorney and Author

Got that sinking feeling like the world is just caving in under you? No, really . . . I mean literally are you seeing the foundation of your back patio drop about a meter below your kitchen? Well it’s happening to more and more Floridians, and often in areas that were never before thought to be part of our infamous sinkhole alley. Worse yet, often insurers are either refusing to provide coverage or simply giving the runaround for claims that are covered. Here’s what to know: 1) Much of Florida is Built Over a Limestone Aquifer – Picture a system of natural limestone pipes and caverns filled with water, which literally holds up the state. Drain that water and the caverns give – sending swimming pools, streets, and even homes straight into the ground. More Water Consumption = Less Support for Our Home Foundations. 2) Sinkhole Coverage is Usually Extra – While most mortgages will require that you have sinkhole coverage, few if any insurers actually include sinkhole coverage as part of their standard homeowner’s policy. So ask

your agent to be sure to add this coverage. 3) Older Claims – Before Governor Scott pushed through major legal changes two years ago sinkhole claims were usually covered under your homeowner’s policy. If your loss occurred after the law changed but your policy was issued before the legal change your sinkhole claim might be covered. Ask a lawyer. 4) Collapse - In South Florida, sinking often results from something other than limestone collapse – like poor foundation or ground settling. A standard property insurance policy may cover this – particularly if the government has condemned the property. My firm and others review these at no charge. So, remember, before Mother Nature turns your den into that lagoon-style pool you’ve always wanted, be sure you’ve got the coverage you need. Russel Lazega is an attorney and author of two of Florida’s most widely distributed legal textbooks on Florida Insurance Law. He has also served as chief general counsel to an auto insurer. Mr. Lazega currently represents accident victims and consumers at war with their insurance companies. He is based in Dania Beach, North Miami, Orlando and Tampa, Florida. Memorial Healthcare System named 2013 Most Wired This year marks the 15th anniversary of Health Care’s Most Wired Survey, and Memorial Healthcare System made the 2013 list of "Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems" as featured in the July edition of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine (H&HN). Since the inception of the Most Wired survey, hospitals and health care systems have made great strides in establishing the basic building blocks for creating robust clinical information systems aimed at improving patient care. This includes adopting technologies to improve patient documentation, advance clinical decision support and evidence-based protocols, reduce the likelihood of medication errors, and rapidly restore access to data in the case of a disaster or outage. “At Memorial Healthcare System, we strive to integrate all our clinical systems in a way that contributes to clinical effectiveness and patient safety,” said Forest Blanton, chief information officer, Memorial Healthcare System. “There are many technological challenges ahead, but Memorial is poised to meet the demands of the industry as we continue our journey as a most wired healthcare system.” Among some of the key findings this year sixty-nine percent of Most Wired hospitals and 60 percent of all surveyed hospitals re-

port that medication orders are entered electronically by physicians. This represents a significant increase from 2004 results when only 27 percent of Most Wired hospitals and 12 percent of all hospitals responded, “Yes;” Seventy-one percent of Most Wired hospitals have an electronic disease registry to identify and manage gaps in care across a population compared with 51 percent of total responders; and sixty-six percent of Most Wired hospitals share patient discharge data with affiliated hospitals, in comparison to 49 percent of the total responders. Thirty-seven percent of Most Wired hospitals do so with non-affiliated hospitals versus 24 percent of total responders. The 2013 Most Wired Survey also covered some new areas such as big data analytics and patient generated data. An emerging practice, big data analytics looks at large amounts of data to uncover patterns and correlations. Thirty-two percent of Most Wired hospitals conduct controlled experiments or scenario-planning to make better management decisions and forty-one percent of Most Wired hospitals provide a patient portal or Web-based solution for patient-generated data. The July H&HN cover story detailing results are available at www.hhnmag.com. Memorial Healthcare System is the sec-

ond-largest public healthcare system in the country. It is a national leader in quality care and patient satisfaction and has been ranked on Modern Healthcare magazine’s list of Best Places to Work in Healthcare. Its facilities include Memorial Regional Hospi-

tal, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Miramar, Memorial Hospital Pembroke and Memorial Manor nursing home. For more information, visit mhs.net.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has improved ‘Blue Drive’ Ron Beasley AUTOMOTIVE EDITOR

LET’S TALK CARS If you’re in the market for a “greener” mode of transportation, check out the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. It has an advanced version of Hyundai’s Hybrid Blue Drive system that increases fuel efficiency and operates in the all-electric mode more often and for a longer time. The improved system optimizes electriconly driving with a higher output 35kw electric motor, a more powerful 47 kW Lithium Polymer battery pack and an optimized hybrid operating strategy. These upgrades are paired with a 2.4-liter fourcylinder engine that now runs on a more efficient Atkinson cycle and an enhanced transmission to generate 199 hp. The new Blue Drive system delivers better fuel efficiency by increasing the overall available electric drive power to allow more miles between fill ups. As in previous Sonata Hybrids, the new version uses a

clutch to decouple the gasoline engine from the drivetrain. In pure electric drive, it has a not-to-shabby top speed of 75 mph. Hyundai engineers have increased the overall amount of available electrical drive power and improved the efficiency of the Hybrid Blue Drive operating system in this latest Sonata Hybrid. Using a higher output 35kw electric motor and the more powerful 47kw Lithium Polymer battery pack, the Hybrid Blue Drive powertrain maximizes electric-only driving. The improved operating system takes advantage of newly developed driving pattern detection and engine on/off optimization logic. The availability of more battery energy allows for more flexibility in running the gasoline engine at optimum efficiency, which saves gas. Better kinetic energy recovery and increased charging efficiency powers the Sonata Hybrid in the all-electric mode more often and for longer periods of time, thus increasing fuel economy. Interestingly, the Sonata Hybrid’s new 47kw lithium polymer battery pack not only is more powerful and more energy dense, it also weighs less and takes up less space in the trunk. The weight has dropped from 96 pounds to 91 pounds, while trunk

Re-shaped front and rear fascias, extended rocker panels allow air to flow around Sonata Hybrid’s body with less resistance.

space has increased from 10.7 cubic feet to 12.1 cubic feet. The improved efficiency of the battery pack is key to recovering more kinetic energy from braking and charging from the engine to help drive the vehicle. The newly optimized system allows the battery to store more usable energy, allowing more all-electric driving, cutting both fuel consumption and emissions. The 2013 Sonata Hybrid design is basically unchanged, except for re-shaped front

and rear fascias with a deeper air dam, extended rocker panels and lower drag wheels that allow air to flow around the body with less resistance. The base price on the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is $25,650. Ron Beasley is the automotive editor for Miami’s Community Newspapers. There’s more to Nashville than country music BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

To all my faithful followers, all I can say is, “My boots are packed and I’m moving to Nashville!” Well, not really, but let me share with you what has led to this yearning. Having been a late bloomer to the love of country music, I had never considered walking down Honky Tonk Row as a vacation. My perception was that Nashville was pure country and although it is, there is so much more to Nashville than the Grand Ole Opry. Known as Music City and listed as one of the top 5 destinations in the world to visit in 2013 by Conde Nast Traveler, Nashville is a destination for families, girlfriends looking for a getaway, art lovers and music enthusiasts. Don’t get me wrong, I have become a die-hard country music fan and from the time I disembarked the plane, Nashville was in full swing. As I walked past security, The Trenton Chandler Band was playing and people were actually milling around obviously in no hurry to claim their baggage. Passing by a heart defibrillator on the wall, I laughed as I read the plaque, “For your Achy Breaky Heart”. My first stop was the Parthenon. Nicknamed the “Athens of the South”, it is the worlds only full size reproduction of the Parthenon and was built in 1897 for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. It houses an art gallery and a 42-foot Athena gilded with 8 pounds of gold leaf who was built by Alan Lequire, one of the nation’s premiere sculptors, whose gallery you can visit and see him as he works on his impressive portraiture busts. For foodies, there are several places you can indulge and my first night brought me to a table at Capital Grille located in The Hermitage Hotel. Walking through the doors of this 100-year-old hotel was step-

ping back to a time of ornate elegance and refinement. The restaurant was just as elegantly appointed but the food was what won high acclaims. The dishes are prepared from food bought at the National Farmer’s Market as well as their own farm. Smoked beef tenderloin, crispy crusted trout, kale and broccoli, truffle mac and cheese coupled with a great selection of wines led me to an early bedtime. I woke up with Billy Currington playing my wake up call and a few short minutes later I was heading into the Nashville Visitor’s Center where my day would begin with an informative video and me taking the stage, guitar in hand, for a photo op. A great way to see the city and get all the scoop is on a Grayline Sightseeing Tour. With a faint drizzle and a Music City chocolate bar in hand, I settled into their comfy seats and learned the inside info on

the people and places of Nashville. Next stop was Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum; 40,000 square feet of everything country. Glancing into the archive room, I could see the ghosts of music past wandering the aisles of packed boxes and guitar cases; so much music history in one room. The displays were breathtaking with costumes, boots, and personal artifacts from the likes of Reba, George Strait, Mel Tillis, Kenny Rogers and the list goes on. From Cadillac’s to guitars, one could spend hours taking in the numerous vignettes. FYI, eating their fried pickles cannot be missed. Cruising down historic Music Row and stopping in front of Studio B brought chills, for here in this recording studio in the middle of the night, Elvis recorded Are You Lonesome Tonight. Taking the tour and hearing the recordings of different artists was entertaining but when I walked into the actual room where Elvis recorded and heard him singing, I have to tell you, there were no words to describe how I felt at that moment. Well, still floating on my Elvis high, I made my way over to the Johnny Cash Museum. For all you lovers of the ”man in black”, trust me, you will not want to miss this. The museum is made up of artifacts, interactive stations, extensive displays and a gift shop. Joanne Yates, Johnny’s sister, said the museum will allow people to “know the reality of who the man was” and it certainly does just that. Okay, you’re probably wondering when I am going to stop talking country music

and get to the parts of Nashville that aren’t. I suppose I can break away for a bit and fill you in on all the “other” amazing things to do. The list is endless. There is the Nashville Zoo, Adventure Science Center, Belle Meade Plantation, Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art (my favorite), The Hermitage which is the home of Andrew Jackson, Jack Daniel’s Distillery (a short distance away), Arrington Vineyards, Hatch Prints which is one of the oldest letter press poster print shops, Frist Center for the Visual Arts where you can listen to docent Mancil Ezell who with his vast knowledge and dry, sarcastic humor is nothing less than riveting, the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, a place that boggles your mind with 2,881 rooms, 9 acres of indoor gardens, 3 pools, fountain show, beautiful atriums filled with nooks and crannies, spa and multiple restaurants and the Schermerhorn Symphony Center with dinner at Arpeggio. Finding good food in Nashville will never be a concern. A few of my favorites are The Conservatory Bar at Gaylord Opry, The Southern where I had the Best grits, ever (sorry Mom), Music City Flats Stone Oven and Cabana where Southern comfort food is their specialty. As my walk down memory lane draws to a close, I have saved the best for last. A visit to Nashville just wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Grand Ole Opry. It is home to the world’s longest running radio show and where legends were born. Touring backstage, you can see the waiting area for performers and even Minnie Pearl’s dressing room. Speaking of where legends are born, save a night (or two) to peruse the Honky Tonks where up and coming singers play. Be careful, the lights and music of Honky Tonk Row are more intoxicating than the beer. As an aside, every year, Nashville hosts Tin Pan South where famous names and hopefuls play and sing side by side in venues all over the city. If you love country music, this is something to put on your bucket list. Upcoming 2014 dates are April 2-6. Spending time in Nashville was a check mark on my bucket list and coming home with a pair of boots was a bonus. Those are the same boots I plan on wearing when I return. See you at Tootsies.
