Kendall Toyota presented a Toyota Tundra to the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station (PHSS) at the dealership on Thursday, Nov. 1, as part of the Toyota “100 Cars for Good” program, a major philanthropic initiative in which the automaker is giving away 100 cars to 100 nonprofits over the course of 100 days. The 100 Cars for Good program is the first Toyota initiative that engages the public to determine how corporate philanthropic donations are awarded. PHSS will use its new Tundra to survey local marinas for injured pelicans and wildlife, rescue and care for wounded animals and as transportation for PHSS staff to give educational presentations at neighboring schools throughout Miami-Dade County. “We are overwhelmed by Toyota’s generosity,” said Brian Fox, PHSS executive director. “Receiving a truck as a donation will significantly enhance our ability to save and treat injured wildlife in the Biscayne Bay area. This will certainly enable us to increase our overall efforts in Miami.” Founded in 1980, PHSS is recognized both nationally and internationally for its dedication to seabird rehabilitation. While it specializes in brown pelicans, the center rescues, treats and cares for all sick, injured or orphaned wildlife with a mission to foster and promote the preservation, protection and propagation of pelicans and other wildlife. Each year, PHSS heals thousands of animals affected by mankind and returns them to their ecosystem. The organization also provides other community services to include education programs, conservation research, outreach initiatives and resolving human-wildlife conflicts.

“We are proud to be a part of Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program and present Seabird Station with their new Tundra,” said Frank Marsala, Kendall Toyota general manager. “We live in a vibrant city and Seabird Station is a remarkable place making a huge impact in Miami and the wildlife that inhabits the area.” Kendall Toyota is located at 10943 S. Dixie Hwy. The dealership has been involved in various charities to include its most recent and favorite initiative of awarding Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year with a new Toyota. “At Toyota, we appreciate what a significant impact a new car can have for nonprofits in their work,” said Michael Rouse, vice president of diversity, philanthropy and community affairs for Toyota Motor Sales, USA. “All 100 of the winners of the 100 Cars for Good program are providing extraordinary and much-needed services, and we thank Kendall Toyota for their role in delivering Pelican Harbor Seabird Station’s car to help them with their important work.” The selection process began May 14 by profiling five finalists at <www.100carsforgood.com>. Individual members of the public were able to vote for the nonprofit they believe can do the most good with a new vehicle. The charity with the most votes at the end of each day became the winner of one of six Toyota models. Additionally, each runnerup will receive a $1,000 cash grant from Toyota. A six-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty also will be provided for each vehicle, compliments of Toyota Financial Services. newest ship the MSC Divina here. Furthermore, in 2014, Norwegian Cruise Line will launch the Norwegian Getaway, currently under construction in Germany. “PortMiami, long known as the Cruise Capital of the World, is well-positioned for new growth,” said PortMiami director Bill Johnson. “We look forward to what is our largest expansion ever of new cruise brands and new build vessels in a single cruise season.” Johnson noted that PortMiami recently trademarked its designation as “Cruise Capital of the World,” which recognizes that the port is where modern day cruising began and is the world’s leading cruise port. PortMiami is Miami-Dade County’s second most important economic engine contributing $18 billion annually to the local economy and supporting more than 180,000 jobs in Greater Miami. For the past four years, more than four million cruise passengers have traveled through PortMiami annually, more than any other port in the world. PortMiami’s impressive roster of 14 cruise lines offers a wide-range of itineraries to destinations in the Bahamas, Mexico, Caribbean, South America and beyond. PortMiami terminal facilities are among the most modern in the world and provide easy passenger boarding and departure. Currently underway are $15 million in improvements to PortMiami’s Cruise Terminal D, which will homeport the Carnival Breeze. The growth at PortMiami is in conjunction with the tourism numbers recorded by the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) which earlier this year announced a record-breaking 13.4 million overnight visitors

in 2011. Greater Miami and the Beaches offers a wealth of pre- and post-cruise options for cruise passengers to extend their travel or vacation with stays in the destination. “Cruise passengers are important to the continual growth of Greater Miami’s travel and tourism industry as they contribute millions of dollars annually to the local economy and generate jobs by staying in hotels, riding in taxis, eating in restaurants, visiting attractions and shopping,” said GMCVB president and CEO William D. Talbert III, CDME. “We are delighted to welcome cruise passengers from around the world who come to PortMiami and contribute mightily to tourism, Miami-Dade County’s No. 1 industry.” Welcoming events will be held by the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau for each of the new ships scheduled to set sail and the public is welcome to attend them at Smith & Wollensky in Miami Beach. Details for those scheduled to depart before year’s end are as follows: Oceania Riviera (Oceania Cruises): Scheduled to set sail on Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. with its welcome event from 5 to 7 p.m. Carnival Breeze (Carnival Cruise Lines): Scheduled to set sail on Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. with its welcome event from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Celebrity Reflection (Celebrity Cruises): Scheduled to set sail on Dec. 5 at 4:30 p.m. with its welcome event from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Disney Wonder (Disney Cruise Line): Scheduled to set sail on Dec. 23 at 5 p.m. with its welcome event from 4 to 6 p.m. For more information on PortMiami, visit <www.miamidade.gov/portmiami>.

In addition to serving on the board of directors on several of South Florida’s major

community-oriented corporations, Barreto has been involved for 23 years with five different Super Bowls — twice chairing (2007, 2010) the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee. During his tenure, Barreto helped raise more than $50 million and inkind contributions for the Super Bowls to ensure that South Florida shined in front of the thousands of dignitaries and media. “I am honored to be recognized by the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club, which has served our community — particularly children — since 1950,” Barreto said. “This means a great deal to me and my family because we have always believed that you must give back to your community and leave it a better place for generations to come.” For more information on the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club — including joining as an individual or corporation — contact Reich at 305-733-0062 or <www.biscaynebaykiwanis.org/membership.php>.

Author bases her latest novel on life aboard dad’s sailboat BY ROBERT HAMILTON

Former Coconut Grove resident and novelist Ann Lee Miller has incorporated her eye-rolling adolescent years living aboard a sailboat at Dinner Key Marina into her second novel, The Art of My Life, which launched Sept. 25. As an 11-year-old, Miller’s moving aboard the Annie Lee warranted little more than a yawn. “My dad, a dead ringer for Willie Nelson, had already packed the family into a VW van for a year to pan for gold out West and in Mexico, pitched us a tent on a St. John beach in the Virgin Islands, and built a dinghy in our 27th Avenue and 11th Street rental house he had to dismantle to get out the door,” Miller said. Her father, Dick Fetterman’s, second boat — a 36-foot yawl — he built in the yard out of plywood and fiberglass. Miller watched the boat take shape from skeleton to upside down ark to floatable RV during her elementary years at the old Shenandoah Elementary School. Familiarity made hauling the yawl by crane to the Miami River and moving aboard seem like no big deal. Miller slept in the aft cabin beside a pile of lumber, terrorized by a spider the size of her hand and a spare palmetto bug months. Perhaps, just maybe, her or two. Every mornfamily drama wasn’t the boat’s fault. ing she tore down But, according to Miller, the boat the dock on her bike, did become the crucible that broke “rattling the teeth her parents’ marriage. out of my head,” to Still, she recalls positives from Saint Hugh’s the ages 11, 12 and 13 at the marina. In the afternoons she shimmied into her deflate and swim away. On weekends Miller’s family putted into bathing suit, cannon-balled off the end of Biscayne Bay with a 10-horse Johnson outPier 1, looked both ways, and dodged boat board, then raised sail on mismatched traffic to the nearby island. “I thought my life was unremarkable masts, one aluminum, one wood. Of sailing, Miller said, “I was bored silly because every other kid at the marina lived and snacked on powdered eggs and grilled it, too,” Miller said. She calls the 36-foot sailboat an aquacul- peanut butter sandwiches while Mom and I ture for mold and dysfunction that launched read Gone With The Wind aloud — she her — in lieu of therapy — into writing. was colorblind. Her mother recognized colors, but not what they meant. So, Miller got handy with the depth sounder — a long mop handle with notches carved at foot intervals. Once, the pole stuck in seaweed and mud with Miller attached. She screamed bloody murder as the Annie Lee sailed off. Since her father had captained the University of Miami’s swim team in college, “I darn sure knew how to swim. But boy howdy was he PO-ed when he had to fetch me from the shallows.” Miller’s younger brother, Richard James “R.J.” Fetterman Jr., a surfer who settled on Maui, hadn’t completed his swimming indoctrination when the family moved aboard and still ran around the dock with a Styrofoam football on a belt circling his waist. Every month or so, their father hacked off another slice of the thing till her brother could swim on his own. R.J., who still says these were the best years of his life, rode his tricycle full-tilt off the end of the dock. A fully clothed stranger jumped in to fish him out. Their dad had to dive for the trike. The next time R.J. cycled off the end of the pier, their father went after him, and the tricycle stayed at the bottom of the bay. Even at her snottiest, Miller said, she couldn’t help being grateful for pram sailing lessons she took adjacent to Bayfront Park where she picked up the much appreciated life skill of capsizing — one she has indulged many times. The actual going over didn’t thrill her. What she loved was standing on the dagger board, flipping the mast upright, and watching water sluice off the sail. Her sailing companions have failed to share her fascination. Staying up late, armed with nets and spotlights when the shrimp were running, did have its appeal. But the 11-, 12-, and 13year-old Miller whined about picking fish bones out of her spaghetti, wearing zinc oxide as a second skin, and never-ending

boat chores. “If I’d known I was living the swan song of my parents’ marriage, making lifelong friends, packing memories like a thousand sea sponges into a dock box — maybe I would have rolled my eyes less and said ‘thank you’ more,” Miller concluded. Today she’s saying thank you by penning novels that capture life aboard ship. Miller’s new book, The Art of My Life, chronicles a guy trying to get his charter sailing business off the ground. The novel is available in e-formats at Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, and Smashwords.com. Paperback versions can be purchased at Amazon.com and BarnesAndNoble.com. About the novel: Cal walked out of jail and into a second chance at winning Aly with his grandma’s beater sailboat and a reclaimed dream of sailing charters. Aly has the business smarts, strings to a startup loan, and heart he never should have broken. He has got squat. Unless you count enough original art to stock a monster rummage sale and an affection for weed. But he had only ever loved Aly. That had to count for something. Aly needed a guy who owned yard tools, tires worth rotating, and a voter’s registration card. He’d be that guy or die trying. For anyone who has ever struggled to measure up — and failed. About the author: Ann Lee Miller earned a BA in creative writing from Ashland (OH) University and writes full-time in Phoenix, but left her heart in New Smyrna Beach, where she grew up. She loves speaking to young adults and guest lectures on writing at several Arizona colleges. When she isn’t writing or muddling through some crisis — real or imagined — you’ll find her hiking in the Superstition Mountains with her husband or meddling in her kids’ lives. Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida (RMHC) ended its 30th Anniversary Celebration in Miami’s Design District in true style, netting $140,000 to continue the charity’s mission of helping South Florida’s children live happier and more productive lives. The celebration culminated a yearlong fundraising campaign, which raised more than $500,000 for the charity. More than 450 guests packed the Moore Building on Saturday, Nov. 3, which was proclaimed “Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida Day” in both Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Two South Florida favorites — DJ Bounce from the AmericanAirlines Arena’s Grey Goose Lounge and the high octane Latin fusion of Locos Por Juana — helped keep the energy level high all night long for the

event guests and families staying at the two South Florida Ronald McDonald Houses. While the money raised from the 30th Anniversary Celebration will help RMHC get closer to its goal of building a third Ronald McDonald House in South Florida, RMHC executive director Soraya RiveraMoya said the event also was able to connect the charity’s donors and sponsors with the families they support through RMHC’s various programs. “The greatest reward from our 30th Anniversary Celebration was seeing the joy and gratitude on the faces of the families staying at our two houses,” RiveraMoya said. “We thank our yearlong and event sponsors and corporate partners as they truly believe in our mission. The Heart Chain Celebration on Saturday was all about the families, volunteers and donors together as one big family.”

Chevy Spark mini-car introduced in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District

BY RON BEASLEY

Chevrolet picked Miami’s blossoming Wynwood Arts District to introduce the new 2013 Spark, the brand’s first mini-car ever marketed in the U.S. and Canada. The Spark is a sporty and maneuverable four-passenger, five-door hatchback with bold styling and in-your-face colors. It is aimed at the next-generation youth market and comes with a lot of extras that today’s young people are looking for, including MyLink Radio — a seven-inch color touch screen radio capable of displaying smartphone-based music, videos, photos and contacts for hands-free calling. MyLink Radio comes with two embedded apps for Pandora Internet radio and Stitcher Smart Radio and BringGo, an embedded app for GPS navigation available for purchase. Anti-lock brakes, StabiliTrak electronic stability control and Hill Start Assist are standard. The Spark looks small on the outside, but it is surprisingly roomy on the inside, with more passenger and cargo room than other mini-cars. It’s powered by GM’s 84 hp Ecotec 1.25-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission and gets an EPA-estimated 38 mpg on the highway. The Spark already is being sold in other countries and Chevy says it is a popular family vehicle. It is available here in LS, 1LT and 2LT models. “Spark is ideal for active city dwellers because it is easy to drive, easy to park and easy to own,” said Mike Weidman, Chevrolet marketing manager. “With its maneuverability, Spark is ideal for city driving.” Spark has a tight turning circle of only 32.5 feet (9.9 meters), which makes it ideal for around-town driving.

In spite of its small size, Spark has a solid stance and, while it looks like a three-door hatch, designers have cleverly disguised the rear doors by integrating the handles into the C-pillar. The technique gives Spark a sporty appearance without sacrificing five-door comfort and utility. An integrated spoiler over the rear hatch door enhances Spark’s look and improves aerodynamics for better fuel efficiency. Spark has a prominent two-tier grille and bowtie logo, a “wheels-out, body-in” stance, a stretched windshield, body-color front door handles and standard 15-inch aluminum wheels. Numerous bins are located throughout the cabin and there is plenty of storage space. With the 60-40 split rear seat folded, long items, such as skis or surfboards, may be carried along with a rear-seat passenger. Color is a big part of the Spark marketing and it is available in a variety of brilliant new colors with names like Jalapeño, Lemonade, Denim, Salsa and Techno Pink. “Since the Spark is targeted toward a younger, fun generation, we have some really fresh and expressive colors for the vehicle,” said Chevrolet’s color and trim designer Joe Lombardi. “Being a small vehicle, it’s perfect for these fun, youthful colors. We tied the exterior color into the interior to give it an overall harmonious, cohesive feel.” Spark’s body-frame-integral structure is tight and stiff for sportier driving dynamics. The electric power steering and MacPherson strut front suspension deliver tight handling characteristics and provide overall stability. Spark also comes with vented front disc and rear drum brakes. Base price on the 2013 Chevrolet Spark is $12,995.

Local Rotarians welcome exchange group from India Gloria Burns GLORIA’S GAB A Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) team from India recently paid an extended visit to Rotary’s District 6990, which encompasses South Florida, the Keys and the Bahamas. Rotary’s District 6990 Group Study Exchange chair and past president of the Coral Gables Club, Yolanda Woodbridge, became known as “Mama Florida” during the planning stages and her job was not an easy one. As Hurricane Sandy was gathering steam farther south, the team arrived spending time in Broward and then traveling to the Bahamas where, you guessed it, they had a longer stay than expected, enduring several days with no power.

The group’s team leader, Rajeev Sood, past district governor of District 3080 and club past president, traveled here with Urmi Mehta, an MBA from Punjab University in Chandigarh; Jasmine Kaur Malhorta, a senior system engineer; Sanjit Singh Paul, a partner in Sunshine Gardens, and Hillary Victor, a principal correspondent for the Hindustan Times Media Ltd. While they all enjoyed the Bahamas and the thrill of experiencing their first hurricane, all were happy to return to the Miami area where they visited numerous clubs including Woodbridge’s home club for a joint meeting on Nov. 1 with the Miami Rotary Club whose president, David Anderson, on behalf of his club, presented Woodbridge with a crystal engraved globe to thank her for all her efforts. After their presentation at the joint club meeting where Sood gifted the two club presidents, Anderson and Walter Alvarez, with a traditional hat and shawl, the team visited various businesses in their respective fields and convened again at The Biltmore Hotel to share the day’s activities, discussed upcoming plans and once again thank Woodbridge. In other news, Club Blue Miami, Young Professionals for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, held an evening of cocktails and networking on Nov. 14 at Gibraltar Restaurant at Grove Isle Hotel in Coconut Grove. One of the leading healthcare services providers in the region, Leon Medical Centers, is investing in the future of the industry by making a $5 million donation to Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed School of Nursing on Oct. 30. The special event with students, faculty, alumni, healthcare professionals, and community leaders took place at MDC’s Wolfson Campus where a check presentation was made and remarks delivered. The donation also coincided with the 50th anniversary of the School of Nursing which opened its doors in 1962. The school will be renamed the Benjamin Leon School of Nursing at Miami Dade College. More importantly, the donation will create program enhancements, opportunities for faculty development and a cohort of Leon nursing scholars to bolster Leon Medical Centers’ workforce and the industry’s. The United States is facing a critical shortage of nurses, with no sign of abating. The problem is especially severe in South Florida. The Leon gift will go a long way in mitigating these hurdles in the region’s healthcare industry. “I cannot think of many other institutions that have positively impacted as many lives in our community as Miami Dade College,” said Benjamin Leon III, president and CEO of Leon Medical Centers and an MDC Trustee. “This is our way of thanking this fine institution and encouraging it to continue building a better community through education and opportunity.” Leon Medical Centers selected MDC because of its shared commitment to medical excellence and to the community both organizations serve.

“This donation is one more step in our commitment to medical excellence and our commitment to our community,” said Benjamin Leon Jr., chair and founder of Leon Medical Centers. “You can’t have medical excellence without having exceptionally prepared and professional nurses. They are the frontline of medical excellence. “We are fortunate to have many MDC School of Nursing graduates serving the patients of Leon Medical Centers and with this donation look forward to having many more,” he added. “We are extremely grateful and pleased with the generosity of the Leon family,” said Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, president of Miami Dade College. “They have raised the bar of civic engagement and giving for all to follow. Thanks to their gift, we will take our already nationally renowned School of Nursing to even greater heights and, more importantly, expand our impact in the community.” Meeting local workforce demands, MDC’s Medical Campus has trained more than 50 percent of the nurses in Miami-Dade County. It also offers more than 20 indemand programs including Physician Assistant studies, Opticianry, Emergency Medical Technician studies, Physical Therapist Assistant studies, Dental Hygiene and much more. Its students also serve the community providing critical healthcare services, performing 52,000 clinical days per year at 800 sites in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, plus an additional 30,000 hours of community service. The School of Nursing is celebrating 50 years of excellence during this 2012-13 academic year. 11th Miami Short Film Festival announces films, new events BY JESSIE ALLEN

With more than 700 international submissions, 80 short films (under 20 minutes) have been chosen to screen in the 11th annual Miami Short Film Festival. There will be 15 different blocks, each consisting of seven or eight films that share a common theme — including love, horror, locals, documentary, and experimental. Some notable appearances include Gael Garcia Bernal in Zalet (Republic of Serbia), and Tony Award winners Ed Asner and Mark Rydell in Good Men (USA). Films will screen Nov. 26-30 at the Paragon Grove 13 at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and Miami Beach Cinematheque at 9 p.m. On Nov. 25, a special Kid’s Program will run at the Miami Children’s Museum including five films targeted to children ages 2-8 from noon to 4 p.m. On that same date, a complimentary family-friendly showcase of highlights from the festival will take place at the North Beach Bandshell as part of the City of Miami Beach Cultural Affairs Program and Cultural Arts Council’s “Fresh Air Fund” program from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, begins the festival at The Lot Bar in Paragon Grove 13 and will include the unveiling of custom artwork by local artist, and President Obama’s two-time winner of “Runway to Win,”

Phil Fung. After parties will occur following the last screening block every weekday in various venues throughout Coconut Grove and at Chalk on South Beach. The festival ends on Dec. 1 with an awards ceremony at the Mutiny Hotel, where winning filmmakers in different categories will be announced. This year’s sponsors include Paragon 13, The Lot Bar, Stella Artois, The Mutiny Hotel, Conill, Figment Group, Midtown Video, Concept International Realty. The festival is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Cultural Affairs Council, Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, City of Miami Beach Department of Tourism and Cultural Development, Office of Cultural Affairs, and the Miami Beach Mayor and City Commissioners. The Miami Short Film Festival is a 501(c)(3) non-profit cultural organization dedicated to promoting national, international and local short films. For more than 10 years, the event has been the launching point for original scripts, new cinematography and film techniques, innovative perspectives, and unique forms of true emotion and expression captured on film. Coastal Cleanup Corporation (CCC), a local non-profit organization dedicated to removing marine debris from the South Florida coastline, recently received a grant from the Florida Sea Turtle Grants Program, which is funded by the sales of the sea turtle specialty license plate. CCC received the grant to support its efforts to restore sea turtle nesting habitat on Elliott Key within Biscayne National Park (BNP). In the fall of this year, volunteers from the organization will coordinate with BNP resource managers to begin removing tons of marine debris from the shoreline of Elliott Key where loggerhead sea turtles nest. Much of the debris that accumulates along the South Florida coastline originates not only from people littering along local beaches, but also from ocean dumping. Derelict fishing gear, plastic, Styrofoam, polypropylene rope, rubber, and other manmade materials drift onto Elliott Key’s shoreline, brought by currents that flow from South and Central America as well as from the Caribbean. The marine debris that accumulates on the barrier islands of Biscayne National Park can interfere with adult sea turtle nesting activity and can likewise hinder the progress of hatchling sea turtles as they emerge from the nests and head out to sea. CCC was chosen for the award through a competitive application process that is open to coastal county governments, educational institutions, and Florida-based nonprofit groups striving to improve the livelihood of sea turtles and conserve Florida habitats.

Launched in 1996, the “Helping Sea Turtles Survive” specialty license plate raises money for two important programs that benefit Florida sea turtles — the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Marine Turtle Protection Program and the Sea Turtle Grants Program, which distributes money back to the local level for turtle conservation projects. The sea turtle specialty plate is currently No. 2 in sales, having sold 66,696 plates in 2010 — second only to the University of Florida specialty plate. The loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, currently is listed under the Endangered Species Act as a threatened species in Florida. “We are grateful for the generous support from the Sea Turtle Conservancy,” said George Pappas, Coastal Cleanup Corporation director. “It will give our volunteers the opportunity to be directly involved in improving sea turtle nesting habitat within Biscayne National Park and to hopefully play a role in increasing the population of sea turtles in the Atlantic Ocean,” he added. “It’s rewarding to know that so many people share our concern for Florida’s sea turtles,” said David Godfrey, Sea Turtle Conservancy executive director. “What we do in this state has a dramatic impact on sea turtle populations around the world. By purchasing the sea turtle specialty plate, Floridians are voluntarily funding important programs to save these amazing creatures.” To learn more about the Sea Turtle Grants Program and the “Helping Sea Turtles Survive” specialty license plate, please visit <www.helpingseaturtles.org>.

‘Walls of Artseen’ to come alive during Art Basel fair Rafael Domenech plans his contribution to the “Walls of Artseen” project.

(Photo by Maggy Cuesta, courtesy of NWSA)

BY MARIA M. FLORES

“Walls of Artseen” exhibition highlights the work of six New World School of the Arts visual students during the Art Basel Miami Beach international fair in a unique show where inside structures become blank canvasses for each of the artists. Charged with the task of incorporating the actual walls of the gallery into their work of art, each artist will utilize the allocated space to execute his or her work. “I wanted the students to conceptualize a subject meaningful to them,” said Maggy Cuesta, dean of visual arts at NWSA. “When we first met to brainstorm about the project, they all displayed strong feelings about different and unique topics — issues that resonate in some passionate way with each one of them. The operative word was “emotions” and the challenge — how to use bare structural space to illustrate this

concept in a meaningful way in order to shape their work and propel their ideas.” Walls of Artseen will be on display from Dec. 6 through Dec. 9 at Artseen Gallery, 2215 NW Second Ave. in Wynwood. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Participating college students Kayla Delacerda, Junli Kato, Sebastian Duncan-Portuondo, Rafael Domenech, Stefanie Lopez, and Jeffrey Noble were selected by Dean Cuesta based on their work, dedication and ability to conceptualize and deliver their work. The artworks, which are in their embryonic stage at the moment, will be comprised of painting, digital media, installation, sculpture and found objects. More information regarding NWSA’s visual arts program is available by calling 305-237-3649. More information about New World School of the Arts is available at 305-237-3135 or at nwsa.mdc.edu.

State agency issues consumer warning of identity theft scam BY LEE STEPHENS

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) recently issued a consumer advisory after learning an entity posing as the DBPR allegedly is targeting license holders in a potential identity theft scam. An unsolicited email, which appears to be from the department, warns of pending disciplinary action against licenses. The email directs the recipient to call a department investigator at a toll-free number and provide personal identification information. The DBPR has confirmed that the email communication is in no way connected with the department or its regulatory authority. If a license holder receives an email from

an entity claiming to be the department and warning of disciplinary action, he or she should not respond to the email or call the listed number. Instead, the licensee should contact the DBPR directly at 1-850-4871395. Licensees also may log into their online accounts to view any public disciplinary actions. The department warned licensees against providing personal identification information to unknown individuals or companies who have made unsolicited contact with them. The theft of personal identification information is a crime and should be reported immediately to local law enforcement. The DBPR will investigate the matter fully and will work with law enforcement to determine whether any criminal action has occurred.

PastaBox joins Brickell’s impressive culinary scene BY LEE STEPHENS

A unique fast-casual pasta joint called PastaBox has joined Brickell’s impressive culinary scene. PastaBox is a fresh concept from Magali and Stephane Vannier de Langre of Elevation Burger in Miami-Dade County. They are set to do for pasta what they have already done as innovative restaurateurs. “We are very proud to bring to Miami and the downtown Brickell area a new and unique Italian restaurant concept that fits perfectly with today’s people fast-pacing lifestyle, food quality expectations, and budget-conscious mindset. This was a two years in the making project that originated from Europe and that’s now available in South Florida for the first time,” Stephane Vannier de Langre said. The fast-food pasta concept is one that has exploded in Europe. PastaBox gets set to introduce South Florida to the experience of fresh made-to-order varieties of imported pasta with a myriad homemade sauces, imported cheeses, and other toppings all nestled inside a customized carton and ready in just minutes. In keeping with the authenticity of the cuisine, Magali and Stephane Vannier de Langre hired renowned Chef Frederic Joulin to create the recipes and most of the sauces for PastaBox leveraging his experience and expertise in creating tangy sauces. “I really like the concept behind this unique fast-casual pasta restaurant because it combines quality with today’s reality of people looking for freshly made dishes at an affordable price in a fast pacing environment” Chef Joulin said. Espacio USA unveils plans for project at 1400 Biscayne Blvd. BY YUDI FERNÁNDEZ

With Downtown Miami gaining steam as a thriving residential district and hub for international commerce, a large international developer has finalized plans for a new complex that will include offices, high-end condominiums and street level retail space. Espacio USA, the American division of Spain-based real estate firm Inmobiliaria Espacio, has unveiled its vision for the new mixed-use development at 1400 Biscayne Blvd. in Downtown Miami’s burgeoning arts and entertainment district. With construction set to begin in early 2013, the mixed-use development marks the first real estate project to be built in the area since the last real estate boom. The project will consist of a 12-story, 103,000-square-foot Class A boutique office building designed to achieve LEED Gold certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and a 55-story luxury residential condominium tower with prime street-level retail product, all set in the heart of Miami’s cultural arts and entertainment district, just north of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The project is expected to require five years for completion. “Two years ago, we began investing in Downtown Miami and attracting new office tenants, and now we are entering the next phase of our plans to help revitalize Omni by bringing a class A product to an underutilized area,” explained Alberto Muñoz, CEO of Espacio USA. “With an iconic design and a healthy mix of residential and commercial uses, the development will serve as an anchor for its neighborhood, while bringing an additional economic boost to Downtown Miami.” As a continuation of its international expansion, Espacio USA in 2010 completed the $35 million acquisition of a 150,000square-foot office and retail building on the 1400 block of Biscayne Boulevard. The company invested $2 million in a capital improvement and marketing program that attracted a variety of quality tenants, increas-

named “Best Tall Building in Europe” by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The firm is collaborating with local architecture firm Rodriguez and Quiroga Architects. “With the local economy rebounding and Miami’s urban core showing signs of growth in both the residential and commercial sectors, now is the time to move forward with our development on the 14th block of Biscayne Boulevard,” said José Antonio Fernández Gallar, director of Inmobiliaria Espacio. “We have invested over $80 million in the South Florida market in the past five years, and we look forward to being a long-term fixture in this community, helping to shape the city’s skyline and contributing to its economic growth.” Espacio’s parent company, Grupo Villar Mir, is based in Madrid and has a robust international presence with 67 percent of its business taking place internationally. The company employs over 30,000 people and has a presence in 31 countries, particularly in Latin America and Europe. As the largest development to move forward in Downtown Miami’s Omni area in recent years, the new project is expected to generate an important economic impact. ing the building’s occupancy to 95 percent in two years. Located at the center of Miami’s arts and entertainment district, the new development will rise directly north of the Adrienne Arsht Center and three blocks from the under-construction Museum Park complex. The AmericanAirlines Arena is five blocks south. Miami International Airport, Miami Beach, Brickell Financial District, and the city’s Health District are all less than 10 minutes away by car or public transit, which includes the Downtown Miami Trolley, Metrorail and Metromover. The architects of the project are Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, which the company previously worked with in developing the successful Torre Espacio in Madrid, considered an iconic building in Madrid’s skyline. The internationally renowned architecture firm has designed other noteworthy properties worldwide, including the John Hancock

Tower in Boston, The Grand Louvre in Paris and Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong. Most recently, the Pei Cobb Freed-designed Palazzo Lombardia in Milan, Italy was

Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade hosted its sixth annual “Wild About Kids” black-tie optional gala on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Four Seasons Hotel Brickell. Net proceeds from the gala, totaling more than $115,000, will benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade and its many positive programs for 10,000 area children who need them the most. Danell Leyva, who earned a bronze medal for men’s gymnastics at the London 2012 Summer Olympics, was honored with Boys and Girls Clubs’ Hometown Hero award during the event. Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s Youth of the Year, Ahbria Marshall, was honored and spoke as an alumna of the organization about what she accomplished thanks to Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. The gala was emceed by Lynn Martinez of WSVN’s Deco Drive and celebrity chef Ralph Pagano. Guests enjoyed a unique “live” red carpet welcome (a model was attached to the end of the red carpet) as they entered the cocktail reception and silent auction featuring one-of-a-kind items. The gala included a dinner program, live music, dancing and much more. Miami’s own South Florida celebrity artist David “LEBO” Le Batard, who previously created a “Wall of Art” for Kendall Boys and Girls Club with LeBron James, donated a piece of his original artwork inspired by the organization’s mission statement to the silent auction. Fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Elias — Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade alumna and singer, dancer and model — sang the National Anthem to begin the dinner pro-

gram and wowed attendees with her vocals following the official program. Children from the Hank Kline Club performed a choreographed dance routine to Celebration. Attendees, including South Florida’s top community leaders, had the opportunity at the event to sponsor a child through donations. For the first time, Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade held an after party at the Four Seasons Hotel Brickell, which included music, dancing, a full bar, tapas-style food and entertainment by a Frank Sinatra impersonator who “jazzed up” the wee hours. The party continued until 3 a.m. Members of Club Blue, Young Professionals for Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, enjoyed the after party and encouraged other young people to participate. “The sixth annual gala was the best we have hosted yet,” said Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Board of Directors chair Barry Stein. “We are very thankful to all attendees for raising a great amount of funds to support our programs.” The gala was chaired by Lana DeSimone, Irene Korge and Eris Thomas, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade chair of special events Olga Guilarte. Sponsors included: Presenting Sponsor Miami Marlins; Gold Sponsor Carmen Rebozo Foundation Inc.; Silver Sponsors DeSimone and Academica, and Bronze Sponsors James T. 2013 Hyundai Sonata offers upscale luxury and value Grant Miller CAR CORNER The Hyundai Sonata is one sweet automobile. It’s now in its third year of sales in this incarnation and the 2013 version is even better than the first two years. The Sonata exterior design is long, light and low, with a high beltline that allows for a sleek roofline accented by a third window. A monoform side profile includes flowing lines highlighted by a signature chrome accent that spans the length of the car. The trim extends out from the headlights, juts up along the hood and through the beltline. The Sonata’s face is bold with a large chrome grille and headlights that integrate details. The stance is finished by 16-, 17- or 18-inch multi-spoke wheels. The sophisticated look continues inside where Hyundai designers have created an upscale ambiance with a flow-through center console and instrument panel. The flowing surfaces complement the exterior design and wrap around the driver and pas-

sengers into the doors. The 2013 Sonata GLS is powered by the original Theta II GDI 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a Gasoline Direct-Injection (GDI) fuel delivery system, which contributes to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. This shorter, more direct path of fuel delivery, allows for greater control of the fuel mixture at the optimum moment, thus improving efficiency. The fuel is injected by a camshaft-driven, high pressure pump. The horsepower and torque ratings for the Theta II GDI are 198 hp and 184 pounds-feet of torque. In the SE trim, which includes a standard dual exhaust, the engine delivers 200 hp and 186 pounds-feet of torque. This high-tech, allaluminum, 16-valve engine features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (DCVVT) and a Variable Induction System (VIS) for better engine breathing. A version of this engine also meets Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) standards. With the 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged GDI engine, the 2013 Sonata offers an excellent combination of fuel efficiency and power – with 274 hp at 6,000 rpm and 269 pounds-feet of torque from 1,750 - 4,500 rpm. Cruise line sparks romance with new ‘Weddings at Sea’ BY JANET DIAZ

Engaged couples now can experience the romance of being joined at sea by the captain aboard a Royal Caribbean International ship through the Royal Romance weddings and vow renewal program. The Commonwealth of the Bahamas has cleared the cruise line to conduct legal weddings aboard the world’s most innovative cruise ships while they are at sea. A Royal Caribbean ship is an ideal option for a “multi-destination” wedding, able to cater to large parties, attended by family members and friends, to smaller — but still unforgettable — affairs. Couples wishing to share this special moment with friends and family can enjoy the Sweethearts at Sea promotional offer, inclusive of a ceremony performed by the captain, photography and more, when booking 12 or more staterooms on a 2013 Royal Caribbean International sailing during the special introductory offer. “Thanks to the support of the Bahamas, our guests can now be married during the course of their Royal Caribbean cruise and bask in the romance of the sea as they exchange their vows,” said Adam Goldstein, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International. “Royal Caribbean’s staff and crew will cater the affair with our world-renowned friendly and engaging Gold Anchor Service to help make the day extra special for the couple and their guests.” “The Bahamas is happy to participate in this venture with Royal Caribbean International,” said Senator Allyson Maynard-Gibson, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, the Bahamas. “This premier cruise line has been bringing visitors to our beautiful country for many years, and we know that the Royal Romance weddings and vow renewal program will encourage even more visitors to our beautiful shores.” The Royal Romance team of wedding specialists are poised to assist couples during this momentous occasion in their lives and are eager to help create a beautifully personalized event that reflects the bride and groom’s desires. From Day One, the Royal Romance team assists in wedding planning services, including any legal requirements pre-departure, and once onboard, the Royal Romance Coordinator ensures every last detail is taken care of for the special moment. Brides and grooms looking to marry onboard a Royal Caribbean ship will be married in a manner that is legally recognized by the Bahamas through the newly passed Marriage Act. The act allows for marriages while in international waters, which is defined as outside the 12-mile limit of the territorial waters of any nation. The actual location of the ship when the marriage takes place is then recorded in the Marriage Record Book of the Bahamas. Couples have several customizable Royal

Romance Package options that celebrate their big day and include all the essentials for creating the perfect wedding. For example, the Royal Romance at Sea package includes: the ceremony performed by the ship’s captain, a groom’s boutonniere, a rose bouquet for the bride, freshly made cake, recorded music and a live soloist during ceremony, wine at the ceremony, dinner for the bride and groom at an onboard specialty restaurant, photography services, plus champagne and strawberries in the couple’s stateroom. The Sweethearts at Seas promotion offers couples a complimentary Romance at Sea package when they share their happy memories with family and friends and their wedding party books 12 or more staterooms on a 2013 cruise of five nights or longer. Those couples booking 25 or more staterooms can enjoy the above, plus a complimentary stateroom upgrade, bar service and an hors d’oeuvres reception. Royal Romance also offers vow renewal packages, symbolic services and customized proposal packages. Complementing Royal Romance’s packages is Royal Caribbean’s Honeymoon Registry which continues the romance with friends and family contributing to a couple’s ideal Royal Caribbean honeymoon cruise. Instead of the standard pots and pans, the couple’s family and friends can contribute to a dinner at a specialty restaurant, a couple’s massage, or an excursion. Couples can add all of the onboard activities they’d like in the registry, where their family and friends can even contribute to the cruise fare and help make the dream of vacationing to far-off places a reality. The Sweethearts at Seas is now available to be booked for cruises starting Jan. 1, 2013. JNF Miami-Dade Region helping to build fire station in Israel BY LEE STEPHENS

The Miami-Dade Region of Jewish National Fund (JNF) has announced plans to support the construction of a new fire station in Israel, on the Carmel Mountain Range, the site of the worst fire in Israel’s history. The plans for the new fire station were discussed on Sunday, Oct. 28, during a Congregation Beth David brunch hosted by JNF. “This is something that Israel sorely needs and I’m delighted that we have the opportunity to help them,” said Ron Kriss, president of JNF’s Miami-Dade Region. “Forty four people died in the fire, which broke out on Dec. 2, 2010, in one of Israel’s lushest and greenest forests, part of Carmel National Park. Seventeen towns had to be evacuated and over 5 million trees were burned. “The story is heartbreaking,” Kriss said. “One of the victims was a 16-year-old volunteer, Elad Riven. Elad was in school that day and called his mom to go home and bring him his firefighting uniform. She did that and then drove him toward the Israel Fire and Rescue headquarters. On the way, they flagged down a fire truck coming from a neighboring city. Elad got on the truck with two other firefighters and that was the last time his mom ever saw him. He was an only child. It took his parents 15 years to conceive him.” Riven and the other firefighters on the truck were headed to rescue a bus with 37 prison guards, who were themselves on the way to rescue prisoners from the Damun maximum security prison on the Carmel. The bus rounded a sharp turn and encountered a 50-foot high wall of fire. The bus couldn’t go forward and couldn’t back up given the tightness of the turn. The bus was in flames when the firefighters arrived. Observers from nearby Kibbutz Bet Oren said that the firefighters had to know they were giving up their own lives. The new fire station has been approved by Israel Fire and Rescue Services. Plans already were prepared and a site was acquired. The only obstacle to constructing the station was funding. Israel had raised half of the $1,150,000 estimated cost of construction but not could not start until the other half was raised. “That’s where we came in,” Kriss said. “We’ve committed to raise $575,000. To date, we’ve raised over $400,000.” Rabbi Hector Epelbaum of Congregation Beth David introduced the speaker and told the crowd about Menachem Ussishkin, the first head of JNF in 1901. Ussishkin is the namesake of the elementary school in

Netanya that Rabbi Epelbaum’s children attended while they lived in Israel. Beth David member Lee Taylor headed the committee that organized the event. He and his wife, attorney Miriam Maer, had gone on a JNF mission to Israel in February and learned there about the tragic Carmel fire and wanted to support the JNF project. The event also was attended by the students of Cantor Julie Jacobs’ Bar and Bat Mitzvah class, who participated fully and peppered Kriss with a host of questions. One child quietly put his allowance in an envelope and donated it to the project. Jewish National Fund was founded in 1901 by Theodore Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism. Its early projects focused on purchasing land in what was then Ottoman Palestine. The land purchases today total 18 percent percent of what is now the State of Israel. They are best known for their work in planting trees in Israel — over 240

million to date. Kriss showed one of the original “Blue Boxes” for which JNF is famous, the charity boxes or “pushke’s” used for the past 100 years to raise funds. JNF’s missions have since evolved into water recycling — JNF has supported the construction of 241 reservoirs, most in Israel’s southern Negev region, and the network of purple water pipes that carry retreated water to the Negev. Israel reuses 82 percent of its water, higher than any other country in the world. JNF’s Miami-Dade Region conducted its kickoff event on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Jewish Museum of Florida and on Nov. 28 will be launching its newly created Lawyers for Israel group during a lunch for lawyers at the Carlton Fields firm in downtown Miami. “We’d love to hear from people interested in helping or in attending these events,” Kriss said. ‘Holiday Mail for Heroes’ available through Dec. 7 BY PATRICIA ROJAS

While military deployments and hospital stays may keep many of our nation’s heroes away from their families this holiday season, the American Red Cross is collecting and distributing cards that send words of encouragement, gratitude and cheer. Now through Dec. 7, Americans can give something that means something by sending a card of thanks and support to members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families. “It just takes a moment to sign a card to share your appreciation for the sacrifices members of the military community make,” said Sam Tidwell, CEO, American Red Cross South Florida Region. “You say thanks, we’ll do the rest.” The Red Cross is inviting the public to send messages of thanks and holiday cheer until Dec. 7 by mailing them to: Holiday Mail for Heroes, PO Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456. Pitney Bowes Inc. receives cards at the special Holiday Mail post office box, and screens them for hazardous materials. Pitney Bowes screens, packages and ships the cards at no charge, and contributes thousands of volunteer hours at sites around the country. Red Cross volunteers across the United

States and on military installations overseas then sort and deliver the cards throughout the holiday season. The Red Cross and Pitney Bowes have received and distributed more than 4.7 million cards for members of the U.S. Armed Forces, veterans and their families since the program began in 2006. To ensure that cards are delivered in time for the holidays, they must be postmarked no later than Dec. 7. Individuals are asked to refrain from sending “care packages,” monetary donations, or using glitter or any other kinds of inserts with the cards. More information and card requirements are at redcross.org/holidaymail. The public can connect with fellow card senders through Facebook at facebook.com/redcross and Twitter.com/redcross using the hashtag #holidaymail. The Red Cross relies on the support of the American people to carry out its mission of service to the 2 million members of the U.S. Armed Forces, 24 million veterans and their families. During this holiday season, people also can support all Red Cross services by making a financial donation at redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS. Individuals also can give the gift of life by making an appointment to give blood at redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800REDCROSS.

Diamond Ball raises nearly $4M for MCH Foundation BY JEREMY KATZMAN

Nearly 700 community, business and society notables were taken through a bold and elegant depiction of “A Frosted Masquerade Affair” at Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation’s 2012 Diamond Ball on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami. The event raised nearly $4 million, including announced gifts, to support world-class care at Miami Children’s Hospital. Guests of the Diamond Ball had the opportunity to see the world premiere of the Bald, Brave, Beautiful I Will Survive music video (visit YouTube.com/ MiamiChildrens to view), which Grammy Award-winning artist Gloria Gaynor recorded with Miami Children’s Hospital patients and supporters to raise funds to help find a cure and provide hope to children facing cancer. “No child should ever have to face a life-threatening disease like cancer,” said Gaynor via video salute. “I am asking you to step up and support the Bald, Brave, Beautiful patients at Miami Children’s Hospital because kids and chemo do not go together.” Following the music video premiere, Gaynor was inducted into the Ambassador David M. Walters International Pediatric Hall of Fame. Guests of the Diamond Ball had the opportunity to hear from 10-year-old leukemia patient Briana Vega, who appeared in the music video with Gaynor and shared her experience as a patient at Miami Children’s Hospital. “This hospital is not a regular hospital to me,” Vega said. “It’s a carnival with some bumpy rides. I’m lucky to be getting my treatment where the nurses and doctors are kids at heart and where it’s all about the children.”

Pictured (l-r) are 2012 Diamond Ball International chair and Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation (MCH Foundation) board member Ravneet Chowdhury, MCH Foundation president and CEO Lucy Morillo-Agnetti, 2012 Diamond Ball chair and MCH Foundation board member Marile Lopez, and 2012 Diamond Ball Auction chairs DJ Kerr and Lauren Sturges-Fernandez. Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation board member Ravneet Chowdhury and Anand Chowdhury were so inspired by Vega’s story that they immediately pledged a $1.75 million donation in the young girl’s honor. Named for the first chair and president of Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation (MCH Foundation), the Ambassador David M. Walters International Pediatric Hall of Fame was created in 1986 to recognize and honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the health and happiness of children everywhere. It is the highest honor bestowed by

MCH Foundation. Previous inductees include legendary children’s advocates Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Barbara and Jack Nicklaus, Dwyane Wade, Beyoncé Knowles, Walt Disney and Audrey Hepburn, among others. “We are blessed to celebrate a woman who was selected for her work on behalf of children not just in her own backyard, but on a global level,” said Lucy MorilloAgnetti, president and CEO of MCH Foundation. “For years Gloria has supported a variety of leading children’s causes and other

philanthropic organizations and we are proud to induct her into our most prestigious fraternity.” Ranked among the top fundraisers in Florida, the Diamond Ball also featured Daymond John, founder and CEO of FUBU and Star of ABC’s Shark Tank, as emcee, with entertainment by the Drew T Band. Other notable Diamond Ball attendees included Miami Heat guard Mario Chalmers, Sports Illustrated supermodel Nina Agdal, actor Juan Soler, CBS 4 anchor Shannon Hori and The Real Housewives of Miami cast members Adriana DeMoura and Alexia Echavarria, and others. In addition to the gift from the Chowdhurys, Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation announced three challenge grants from the Batchelor Foundation totaling $800,000 over the next two years ($500,000 and $150,000 for 2013 and another $150,000 for 2014). The Diamond Ball Committee was led by chairs Marile and Jorge Luis Lopez, iinternational chairs Ravneet and Anand Chowdhury, and auction chairs Lauren Sturges-Fernandez and DJ Kerr. Sponsors included Premier Beverage, Sabadell United Bank, Duty Free Americas, Brown & Heller, American Airlines, Tri-City Electric, Selecta magazine, Accord Productions, Lava Studio, Maria Elena Headpieces, WOW Factor, JW Marriott Marquis Miami, Rene Ruiz, Mayda Cisneros, Laura Buccellati and Shark Branding. Property Appraiser’s Office launches online search tools BY PATRICK SMIKLE

The Property Appraiser’s Office recently launched two new features to facilitate Internet users searching for property information on the office’s website. The “Property Search” feature of the Property Appraiser’s website has for several years been the most popular webpage on the Miami-Dade County portal, allowing people with Internet access to search property records using a name, address, or folio number. As of today, the use of the Property Search has been made even easier and more flexible with the launch of a “mobile-friendly” version of this online tool. People using mobile devices (such as smartphones, tablets) now will be able to access the Property Search feature on these devices. Without downloading any new software, or having to “sign-in,” users will be able to access the key features of the mobile Property Search including;

• Search by name, address or folio; • Fast access to real property data; • Well-organized presentation of information, and • Access to map and aerial imagery view. Also available is a new Tangible Personal Property Search Application, which allows users to search the database for assessment information on business properties in Miami-Dade County. Website users can search by folio number, business name or property address to find the following account information: Location, mailing address and assessment value. Property Appraiser, Pedro J. Garcia, who in his four-year tenure has pushed for the increased use of information technology in customer service, noted that customer feedback had played an important role in the development of these new online tools. “We will continue to enhance our online systems and look forward to the public’s continued support,” Garcia said.

On Thursday, Sept. 20, Duane Morris served as a co-sponsor for a fundraiser to benefit the Crystal Academy, a Coral Gables-based center dedicated to early and intense therapeutic interventions for children diagnosed with autism and related developmental delays. The Academy has operated in the area since September 2009, and has enjoyed incredible support from the community and an already successful track record with its students. Children frequently reach school age prepared to learn but illequipped for the pace and stresses of a typical classroom environment. In response to those needs, the Crystal Academy Primary School (CAPS) will open in the fall of this year. The mission of

CAPS will be to provide a special-needs modified academic program for grades K through 3 that emphasizes achievable academic growth, self-sufficiency, appropriate social interaction and problem solving. The gathering, held at Crave Restaurant in Coral Gables, was well-attended, attracting some 55 guests. The Academy will use all funds raised to provide scholarships to students in need of financial assistance. Also in attendance were several Duane Morris partners, including Mark S. Scott, who has played a crucial role in the growth of the Academy and the upcoming launch of the school, as well as Harvey Gurland, the managing partner of the firm’s Miami office, and Michelle Gervais, the chair of the firm’s Women’s Initiative in South Florida and the organizer/chair of the event.
