Kids Corp volunteers support teachers in local classrooms BY DANIELLE MONTOYA

Kids Corp, recently announced plans to expand to 200 volunteers this school year. Kids Corp is a youth-led volunteer service comprised of students in South Florida and beyond who are dedicated to community service and youth leadership initiatives that help build capacity and bolster resources in highneed schools by building awareness about the opportunity gap and offering hands-on volunteer opportunities in under-resourced schools. Lindsey Mendelson of Ransom Everglades School and Ali Oshinsky of Pine Crest School co-founded Kids Corp in 2012 after organizing a service project to support teachers in Liberty City and Overtown. Mendelson and Oshinsky last year formalized their mission to serve as a platform to involve youth and other community members in the effort to expand educational opportunities and provide educational resources in South Florida. They expanded their efforts by launching a partnership with Teach For America in fall 2012 and forged partnerships with Aventura Mall and Simon Malls Corporation to launch school supply drives this summer. “I have admired Teach For America from a distance thinking it was an organization where college grads and adult volunteers could help,” Mendelson said. “Through Kids Corp, hundreds of teenagers throughout Dade County from dozens of schools can get involved and make a difference in so many classrooms. “In addition, Kids Corp is supporting the ongoing work of our community to expand educational opportunities at high-need schools and introducing high-school age volunteers to see what it takes to eliminate educational inequity in our country,” she added. Kids Corp hosts a Google platform where Teach For America corps members have the option to post projects that will support their classroom lessons and objectives. The online tracker includes project specifics, due

dates, and delivery information as well as opportunities to visit classrooms to work one-on-one with the students. “Kids our age know the power of social media. In forming Kids Corp, we wanted to harness that power and use it to spread the word about the variety of ways we can help make a difference in bridging the education gap,” Oshinsky said. “Through social media sites, we can reach out to friends all over the country, supporting Teach For America corps members while also providing a platform to educate the community and high school students.” Through technology and social media networking, Kids Corp is exploding. Mendelson and Oshinsky successfully launched a crowdsourcing campaign via

served, we are certain this year’s gala will be a highly successful event.” Moore, currently serving as senior vice president of the Miami Dolphins, was a standout wide receiver during his 13-year tenure with the Dolphins, breaking nearly every career receiving record for the team and held those records until 1991. Moore, who played in two Super Bowls, still stands second on the Dolphins all-time career receiving touchdowns list with 74. Moore’s success in football carried over into his personal life by giving unselfishly of his time to many charitable causes in South Florida where he grew up and attended Miami Edison Senior High School, followed by a stellar career at the University of Florida. His endeavors off the field, including long-term relationships with several nonprofits, let Moore to be named the 1984 NFL “Man of the Year.” He also earned the 1986 Byron White Humanitarian Award for his service to his team, community and country. “I am honored to be recognized by the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club,” Moore said.

USA), formerly known as Friends of the Orphans, held an event at Pinecrest home of board member Tomas Hauf on Aug. 27. This amazing organization is building awareness in South Florida after having impacted the lives of many thousands of children whom they have raised in their nine homes throughout the Americas and Caribbean. The event highlighted the Haitian orphanage and featured the photography of award-winning Haitian-born photojournalist Carl Philippe Juste, whose politically active family was forced to flee its homeland in 1965. Settling in Miami, Carl has served the Haitian community since 1991 through his work at the Miami Herald capturing the struggles of Haitians in the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America. Viter Juste, Carl’s father, who recently passed away at age 87, was the founder and creator of Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. NPH has a history in Haiti alone dating back to more than 25 years. They have two main homes — the St. Hélène Foyer children’s home in Kencoff, the Saint Germain home for special needs children in Châteaublond as well as the St. Damien Châteaublond Pedriatric Hospital. That hospital now is the country’s largest pediatric clinic. Not only does NPH run those facilities but they also provide free meals and schooling to many children in the local community. Old Smokey issue gives us an opportunity to educate BY RAQUEL REGALADO

Miami-Dade School Board member There are few terms that have the ability to instantaneously strike fear in the hearts of parents and as we have learned over the past few months in the Grove. Soil sample is one of them. And while most parents are talking about Blanch Park and the West Grove Community Center, the current soil samples were taken from areas within a mile radius of the Old Smokey inclinator site, which is today the City of Miami’s Fire Rescue Training Facility. That mile radius includes George Washington Carver Middle, George Washington Carver Elementary, Frances S. Tucker Elementary and Coral Gables Senior High. Today as we all look over the environmental reports and await official word from DERM (now known as Regulatory and Economic Resources, RER) on the samples taken from these schools it is important to take a step back and consider what we can learn and teach our children from this experience. The first is a lesson about history and how decisions made a little less than 100 years ago are affecting us today. Old Smokey was built on 3425 Jefferson St. in mid 1920s at the cost of $65,000, which were collected from the residents of Coconut Grove prior to their annexation by the City of Miami. Old Smokey was touted as the Cadillac of all incinerators and open in 1925 with the promise of incinerating 100 tons of garbage every 24 hours. The news reports, with much fanfare, highlighted that the furnace was kept burning night and day and was attended by seven men. At the time, incineration was becoming popular and seen as an efficient means of deposing of garbage (then called rubbish). There were little concerns about the byproducts of incineration since burn piles and burn barrels were culturally accepted. In fact, Old Smokey was in its day a beacon of progress for the Magic City which hoped to reduce landfills and prevent residents from burning their own waste. At the time scientist marveled at all the possible uses of incinerators which later included the generation of electricity. The output of ash was seen merely as a nui-

sance to the surrounding neighbors and little was understood about what exactly was being emitted into the atmosphere through Old Smokey’s flue. Today we know that the byproducts of Old Smokey’s production from 1925 to 1970, when it was closed by litigation initiated by the City of Coral Gables, contained heavy metals, dioxins, furans, sulfur dioxide, methane and hydrochloric acid. The timing of Old Smokey’s closing is significant because incineration was at its most popular in the 1960s and it was in 1963 when the City of Miami sued the engineers of the site for poor ash filtration. Specifically, the news reports at the time stated that the ash embers from Old Smokey had set fire to surrounding structures and that residents within a mile of the site reported being affected by soot from the facility. On Nov. 5, 1970 Old Smokey was shut down and declared a public and private nuisance. And while the 1970s brought stricter regulation of incinerators, for the Grove and areas of Coral Gables, the damage was done. Today, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our students and informing parents of any and all information we receive from DERM (RER). As the school board member who represents the area I am committed to going above and beyond whatever recommendation DERM (RER) makes to insure that our schools are safe. I also am committed to taking this opportunity to work with the wonderful science teachers at George Washington Carver Middle, George Washington Carver Elementary, Frances S. Tucker Elementary and Coral Gables Senior High and educate our youngest residents about Old Smokey and the environmental fragility of our area. Because while our current societal focus is consumption, Old Smokey and environmental disasters like it teach us that we are all connected, that from the air we breathe to the water we drink we cannot abuse the natural world and expect it to heal itself. That we are stewards of our environment and that rather than consumption we should seek connection; foster a lifelong love of the natural world and ask the hard questions about the long term impact of the environmental decisions that we are making today.

Omni Offices welcomes corporate HQ for Resorts World Bimini/Miami BY YUDI FERNANDEZ

With interest mounting among major multinational corporations eyeing space in downtown Miami, 30,000 square feet of space at the Omni Offices has been occupied as the headquarters for Resorts World Bimini and Resorts World Miami. The office, which accounts for net positive absorption in downtown Miami, becomes the submarket’s largest new occupancy to take shape in 2013. All told, approximately 150 people are employed in the Resorts World offices. An additional 185,000 square feet of office space remains available for lease at the Omni Offices, making it the largest amount of contiguous space now available in Miami’s urban core. Resorts World Bimini and Resorts World Miami join the Miami International University of Art & Design, the U.S. State Department, and the U.S. Diplomatic Security and Passport Agency as the property’s largest tenants. CREC principal Steven Hurwitz, vice president Douglas Okun and leasing associate Amy von Hofen are spearheading the property’s leasing and marketing campaign on behalf of the Genting Group, which owns the Omni Offices. Genting also operates Resorts World Bimini and is finalizing plans for the development of Resorts World Miami. “Beyond creating new jobs and positive absorption for the downtown Miami market, the debut of the Resorts World Bimini and Resorts World Miami offices send a clear signal to the community that Genting is committed to rehabilitating the Omni Center and advancing the ongoing revival of the Arts and Entertainment District,” Hurwitz said. Photo essay, ‘The Cure Package,’ tells amaizing story of survival BY LISA MORALES

So often a photography exhibit documents a fleeting moment or memory. However, Lisa Boccard’s photographic essay, “The Cure Package” is an amazing story of survival beyond the moment preserved. The exhibit, presented as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, consists of 15 photos taken by Miami Beach photographer Lynn Parks. It will open on Saturday, Oct. 5, 7 p.m., at the ACND Gallery of Art at Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Prep, 4949 NE Second Ave. (telephone: 305-7518367; visit online at <www.acnd.net>.) This event is free, but an RSVP is required to <news@acnd.net>. Taken more than two decades ago, the photos now seem a little outdated and “80ish,” but look deeply beyond the visual and get to know the subject. Today, this exhibit says, “I am still here,” and Boccard’s life is a story that defied statistics, and one of purpose, where her attitude and persistence have changed the community. When “The Cure Package” debuted 19 years ago at The Towers of Quayside, she hoped that the self-portraits would help other women understand the disease and send a message that, despite treatment, survivors could still claim and proclaim their femininity. Black and white studio portraits depict Boccard confronted with numerous medicine bottles; with head completely bald, she poses beside mannequins with hair (or vice versa), and, ironically, the essay ends in color with an elated Boccard (who had then thought she had overcome this stage of cancer) holding a young girl in her arms. Two years ago the mother of this girl (now an adult) was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away this past June. In 1991, at the age of 29, Boccard was first diagnosed with Stage III breast cancerafter being misdiagnosed for nine months. Although declared “cancer free” 10 years later, by 2003, she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and given five years to live. Life beyond her diary has evolved into a career dedicated to helping other women surviving breast cancer. She is a co-founder of the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition and a board member for Women Beyond Cancer. In 2003, her brother, Vincent, and his wife, Terry, founded the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund that helps provide

funding for screening mammograms for women who cannot afford them. In 1994, she, along with other breast cancer advocates, presented President Bill Clinton with 2.6 million signatures requesting the resources needed to end the breast cancer epidemic through Campaign ’94 with the National Breast Cancer Coalition. Her fervid leadership has been crucial in the success of the fund. “In many cases, something like this is created to honor the memory of someone who has passed away,” Boccard stated in a 2012 interview. “I am alive and here. When I am introduced, people are shocked that I am alive. It is amazing to see their reactions.” Boccard also is involved with the many fundraisers benefiting the fund such as the Broward Health Coral Springs’ Race for Women’s Wellness and Glam-a-Thon events. “My Dad once said, ‘Cancer has become your career.’ In a way, he was right. It has changed my life in so many ways, Boccard said. “And, what we have done with our lives goes back to our foundation.” “The Cure Package” is the first exhibit as part of the ACND Prep’s “Through the Lens — Artist Alumni Series.” Boccard graduated from the school in 1980. Miami Dade College admits its 2 millionth student BY TERE ESTORINO FLORIN

Miami Dade College (MDC), the higher education institution with the nation’s largest undergraduate enrollment of more than 175,000 students, recently admitted its 2 millionth student. Tatyana Rivera, a 2013 Coral Reef Senior High School graduate and new MDC American Dream Scholar, became the 2 millionth student to attend MDC in a community with 2.5 million residents. “I had no idea. This is so exciting. My brother attended MDC and had a great experience. So I was already excited,” said Rivera, 18. “Now, I am ecstatic.” Rivera, who was a top student and cheerleader at Coral Reef, aspires to be a pediatrician. She told college officials recently that her first choice was MDC because of the value and quality. “It was a no-brainer,” she added. “As long as I could remember I’d meet successful MDC graduates everywhere I went.” In 1960, MDC opened its doors to its first 1,428 students with the idea that anyone with a desire to get a college degree should be given that opportunity. Few of the college’s earliest leaders likely could anticipate this fledgling community college whose first classrooms were built on the site of old chicken coops in northwest Miami would grow to become the largest college in the nation and celebrate the recent admission of its 2 millionth student. Admitting 2 million students is the latest milestone in a string of achievements over the past five decades that include

being Florida’s first racially integrated junior college and becoming the largest college in the state of Florida just seven years after opening. Over the years, the college has grown to eight campuses and evolved into an exceptional and diverse learning environment that also celebrates more than 300 academic programs, including four-year degrees in several disciplines; talented and dedicated faculty; frequent visits by distinguished personalities; relevant and impactful cultural programming with headline events such as Miami International Film Festival and Miami Book Fair International; an Honors College program hailed by Time magazine as a stepladder to the Ivy Leagues, and college-wide initiatives that help students to succeed at MDC and beyond. Miami Dade College often is at the forefront of innovations in higher education and has built a reputation for offering the academic and training programs to help graduates attain careers in today’s in-demand fields and prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow. In fact, it is estimated in a recent study that the activities of MDC and its alumni add $3.3 billion annually in income to the local community. MDC reached the 100,000th student mark in 1969. In 1999, the nation’s largest institution of higher education accepted its 1 millionth student, and its 1.5 millionth in 2006. Rivera, a Miami native, assures she will make the college proud. “It’s a little extra pressure, but I am up to it,” Rivera stated. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Kendall Campus freshman Tatyana Rivera, who recently enrolled, became MDC’s

The Miami Dade College community celebrated its new official college flag during flagraising ceremonies on Sept. 4 at which time all campuses simultaneously raised the new flag. The main event at the Wolfson Campus, which was led by Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, MDC president, was streamed live so that the other campuses could raise their flags at

precisely the same moment. The new flag has eight stripes representing the college’s eight campuses and its logo in the center. The timing was especially right given the recent enrollment of the college’s 2 millionth student. “We have one college, one mission, one vision and now one flag,” Dr. Padrón said. “I can’t think of a more cohesive organization than MDC.”

Miami Foundation event launches Our Miami Public Space Challenge

Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY COSETTE MARTINEZ

More than 400 young professionals, local change-agents and engaged Miamians filled The Stage Miami for The Miami Foundation’s Our Miami Project Launch. The kickoff event on Wednesday, July 31, introduced two new projects: the Public Space Challenge and Match305, a talent retention project. Both programs are part of the foundation’s Our Miami initiative, which fosters community by building attachment to the city, developing public spaces and retaining young talent in Miami. Our Miami uses research from the foundation’s Our Miami: Soul of the City study that clearly shows attracting and retaining young, talented and creative people in Greater Miami will grow the economy faster than other, more traditional measures of economic development. “Looking around the room at all of this young talent, I can’t help but feel optimistic about Miami’s future,” said foundation president and CEO Javier Alberto Soto during his remarks. “We are not a place where you have to find your niche within a sprawling, established city. Planting your roots in Miami gives you a chance to shape this young, dynamic community. Our role on the global stage depends on your vision and your contributions to our growth.” The Miami Foundation developed the Public Space Challenge to uncover the best

ideas for creating and improving local public spaces: parks, libraries, public buildings, markets, plazas, playgrounds or any place where people can convene and connect. Anyone can submit ideas. Community experts and professional place makers will identify the top ideas; The Miami Foundation will invest $100,000 to make the ideas become reality. The Health Foundation of South Florida joined the challenge, adding an additional $20,000 to fund public space ideas focused on nutritious food access and physical activity. The Miami Foundation also launched Match305, a talent retention project and Web survey. The online tool measures an individual’s “attachment” to Greater Miami and provides suggestions about how to become more engaged where he or she lives. Results will be made available to community stakeholders to help guide talent retention efforts. The tool is based on research from a Georgetown University study and has been instrumental in reducing year-over-year employee turnover at Fortune 50 companies. Florida International University signed on as a partner in the project, investing $10,000 with Match305 to aid their ongoing local graduate retention work. The Public Space Challenge will accept ideas through Sept. 19. Anyone in MiamiDade County can submit a challenge idea or participate in Match305 by visiting <ourmiami.org>.

Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) has been selected as an official charity partner of the Miami Marlins, one of four non-profit organizations to receive this recognition. The Miami Marlins’ $25,000 gift will support Sensory Saturday, a monthly inclusive and accessibility program that allows children with special needs and their families to explore MCM and its exhibits in a sensory modified and supportive environment.
