Miami International Film Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary MIFF executive director Jaie Laplante (left) interviews guest Ruth Shack.

BY GARY ALAN RUSE

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Miami International Film Festival and during a press conference on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower in downtown Miami the program for the 10day event beginning Mar. 1 was announced. Miami Dade College, which now owns the Freedom Tower (the former Miami News building), produces and presents the festival that has grown steadily over the years. After a video montage of vintage news reports of past festivals, MIFF executive director Jaie Laplante announced that there would be 117 feature films, including many world, North American and U.S. premieres. For the first time in MIFF history, the festival will open and close with documentary features, Twenty Feet from Stardom directed by Morgan Neville and Venus and Serena directed by Maiken Baird and Michelle Major. “The fact that these were two of the most compelling, overwhelming, joyous films that were in our program made them natural selections to be in our gala and conclusion,” Laplante said. The festival films will be presented at two historic landmarks, the Gusman Center Olympia Theater and MDC’s Tower Theater, as well as at Coral Gables Art Cinema, O Cinema, Regal South Beach and Miami Beach Cinematheque. It is estimated that the annual festival attracts more than 70,000 audience members and more than 400 filmmakers, producers, talent and industry professionals. There are six competition categories with many films vying for awards in documentary, dramatic and other divisions A guest at the press conference was Ruth Shack, who served three terms on the MetroDade County Commission in the 1970s and ’80s, and who sat on the original MIFF board of directors in the festival’s first year, 1984. She remembered how extraordinary that was. “The sheer audacity of the idea blew us all

away,” Shack said. “Miami’s modern history has been short, and clearly the film festival was one of the most audacious, one of the most visionary and one of the most exciting concepts to come along. There was skepticism that the film festival would last, but I think others would agree with me that the sheer joy of having made it 30 years later is rather remarkable.” Laplante asked her what the highlights were for her of that very first film festival. “It was the people involved,” Shack said. “It was having people come from other communities to ours to look around, to see some of these films that were being shown and to recognize us as a player in a field that we really knew very little about.” Laplante acknowledged that it has not always been smooth sailing for the festival, even in more recent years, but even though there have been some challenges, “we’re in a very good place here.” Shack agreed, noting that when MDC took the helm, it made a difference. “When the college stood up and said ‘we will be a part of this exciting adventure,’ I think we all had a great relief that it was going to survive,” Shack said. “Here was an organization with a stellar reputation in the community and an interest in not only film but how film was made. It made me feel a whole lot better.” MIFF will bestow Career Achievement awards to Academy Award-winning director Fernando Trueba and Academy Award-nominated director Lasse Hallström, best known for his film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. River Phoenix’s last movie, Dark Blood, will make its North American premiere at the festival. “If you’re not at the movies every day in the first 10 days of March, you’re in the wrong place,” Laplante said. Shack added, “I think it’s going to be an extraordinary festival.” For tickets and information visit <www.miamifilmfestival.com> or call 305405-MIFF (6433).

Buena Vista Deli celebrates art with mural, fence installation

A recently installed mural and colorful enhancements to the patio fence have made the Buena Vista Deli an even more “tasteful” stop for diners. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

BY HARRY EMILIO GOTTLIEB

The quaint historic neighborhood of Buena Vista is tucked away in a pocket of Miami just north of the booming Wynwood and Midtown communities on the edge of the Design District. The Buena Vista Deli — or BVD as it is known to patrons — is a French bakery located at 4590 NE Second Ave. Corentin “Cory” Finot, a master Parisian baker and alumni of Lycée Hotelier de Saint Quentin en Yvelines, is the hospitable proprietor of this charming corner of France. His partner Claude Postel is a seventh generation French chef. World travelers always look for the places where the locals go to find the best atmosphere, quality, service and price. The BVD delivers all of these, and more. Finot said he had the honor and privilege of working for the visionary developer Tony Goldman at his Wish Restaurant on South Beach. They both shared a love for food and art. Inspired by Goldman, Finot decided to bring a neighborhood restaurant to Buena Vista and the BVD was born.

The BVD has an inviting outdoor patio where customers often mingle with friends and children while reading complimentary copies of the New York Times, Miami Herald or the assortment of Tin Tin books. Small dogs also find the patio an ideal place to socialize. Just before Art Basel and Miami Art Week 2012, Pinot decided it was time to decorate the blank patio wall facing the patio with a colorful mural. He called on the talented Edwin Sepulveda (aka Don Rimx) who created a colorful Provencal image that has been enjoyed by BVD regulars. Recently, artist Johanna Boccardo (aka JOJAPIPOSA) was inspired by the geometric pattern of the adjacent fence and created her multicolored tape bombing art installation titled Color Study In 45. These artist efforts have resulted in a most iconic intersection at NE 46th Street and Second Avenue. Goldman would be proud of Finot’s efforts in Buena Vista to continue his vision of creating a neighborhood outdoor museum.

Miami music student to perform with National Youth Symphony BY ROBERT HAMILTON

A Miami Arts Charter (MAC) music student, Terrence Smith, has won a coveted spot playing in the violin section of the National Youth Symphony Orchestra (NYO-USA). The NYO-USA recently concluded its first annual nationwide search for teen musicians who will travel to Washington, DC, and Eastern Europe. The inaugural program, sponsored by Carnegie Hall and Purchase College of the State University of New York, located in Westchester County, chose only 120 students out of an application pool of 10,000. Musicians must be between the ages of 16 and 19 and not yet attending a college or university program, where they would presumably have other opportunities or conflicts with major orchestras. They auditioned by video and applied online. “I was completely surprised to find out about this amazing opportunity,” Smith said. “The next five months are going to be the longest wait of my life.” As a member of the tuition-free NYOUSA, between June 30 and July 23, Terrence will work with orchestra director James Ross and the principal players from some of America’s top orchestras during a three-week residency at Purchase College in Purchase, NY. He then will embark on tour with Valery Gergiev, who also is music director of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, and principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. “I think every youth orchestra around the world is very important, and I expect that the National Youth Orchestra of the USA, in particular, will be very highly accomplished, both technically and artistically, noted the maestro on Carnegie Hall’s blog. “I look forward to getting to know many new, gifted musicians — sharing ideas, learning together, and going on a cultural journey, discovering new places,” he added. “For students, I expect playing in NYO-USA will be an honor, a challenge, a pleasure, and an unforgettable experience not to be missed.” The ensemble will be backing violin

soloist Joshua Bell while traveling to Washington, DC; St. Petersburg (Russia); Moscow, and London. “Not only is this going to be a great musical and educational experience, but it will change his life forever in all other aspects,” said Aleksander Djuric, MAC’s associate conductor. “I had a similar experience in the European Youth Orchestra my last year of high school and, for me, the most valuable were the longlasting friendships established back then and being surrounded by high quality musicians, which is paying dividends now almost 30 years later.” Like Djuric, Clive Gillinson, Carnegie’s executive and artistic director, played in such an orchestra in his youth. His experience as cellist for the NYO of Great Britain inspired his creation of the NYO-USA. “It was an inspiration, part of why I wanted to take up music,” he told The New York Times in January 2012, when the program was first announced to the public. MAC founder and director Alfred de la Rosa, who is also the instrumental music conductor, said, “It is truly a pleasure to see such a deserving musician be recognized. Terrence’s acceptance to the National Youth Orchestra, though not surprising, is a very important personal achievement for him. He is a stellar musician and I am proud to have witnessed his growth at MAC. I expect to see many more great accomplishments from this great young musician.” Miami Arts Charter School is located at 3900 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33138. Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music, the title song from Jerry Herman’s musical Hello, Dolly!, and Jule Styne’s overture to Gypsy, as well as John Kander’s theme song to Martin Scorsese’s film New York, New York. Ann Hampton Callaway, whom Keith Lockhart describes as having a “gorgeous voice and an unmatched musical intelligence,” takes center stage during the postintermission set to sing The Way We Were, Don’t Rain On My Parade, and a medley of People and Being Alive also featuring American jazz pianist Ted Rosenthal. Affectionately known as “America’s Orchestra,” the Boston Pops is the most recorded and arguably the most beloved orchestra in the country, beginning with the establishment of the modern-era Pops by Arthur Fiedler and continuing through the innovations introduced by John Williams and the new-millennium Pops spearheaded by Keith Lockhart. With the 125th anniver-

sary season in 2010, the Boston Pops reached a landmark moment in a remarkable history that began with its founding in 1885 by Civil War veteran Henry Lee Higginson, who founded the Boston

Symphony Orchestra (sister organization to the Boston Pops) four years earlier in 1881. From the start Mr. Higginson intended to present, in the warmer months, concerts of light classics and the popular music of the day. From a practical perspective, Higginson realized that these “lighter” performances would provide year-round employment for his BSO musicians. The “Promenade Concerts,” as they were originally called, were soon informally known as “Popular Concerts,” which eventually became shortened to “Pops,” the name officially adopted in 1900. Some people may not realize that there were 17 Pops conductors, beginning with the German Adolf Neuendorff, who preceded Arthur Fiedler, the first American-born musician to lead the orchestra. Having led more than 1,400 Boston Pops concerts, Keith Lockhart (1995-present) has served 18 seasons as Boston Pops conductor. In response to the ever-diversifying trends in music, Keith Lockhart has taken the Pops in new directions, creating programs that reach out to a broader and younger audience by presenting a wide range of artists — both established performers and rising stars — while maintaining the Pops’ appeal to its core audience.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue conducts first Change of Command event

BY GRISELLE MARINO

Surrounded by the love, respect and admiration of family, friends and coworkers, Fire Chief Dave Downey assumed command of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) on Feb. 1. MDFR celebrated its first ever Change of Command ceremony in order to pay tribute to retiring Fire Chief William “Shorty” Bryson, a 38-year veteran of the fire service and the new Fire Chief Dave Downey, who brings 30 years experience as a firefighter, company officer, battalion chief, division chief, and assistant chief of operations. The ceremony took place at MDFR’s Training Facility located at 9300 NW 41 St. in Doral. Changes of command ceremonies are steep in tradition; these ceremonies are a formal, symbolic passing of responsibility, authority and accountability of command from one leader to another. The event began with the preliminary honors, and ended with the symbolic passing of the guidon, or “colors.” Passing the guidon from one chief to another represents the passing of trust and wellbeing of a sector from one to another, but it also perpetuates the seamless tradition of vigilance, service and integrity. “I am torn even now leaving this wonderful organization,” Bryson said. “I leave

knowing that Chief Dave Downey knows this department better than anyone. I see good things coming from his leadership and wish him all the luck.” In addition to Chief Downey’s work experience, he has completed numerous professional courses and earned his associate and bachelor’s degrees in Fire Science, as well as a master’s degree in Public Administration. Moreover, he has certifications as a technical rescue technician, flight medic, task force leader and a fire instructor. Currently, he serves as a National Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Task Force representative with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). MDFR originated as a single-unit fire patrol in 1935. It has grown into the largest fire rescue department in the Southeast. According to the 2011 National Run Survey published in the June, July, and August 2012 issues of Firehouse Magazine, MDFR was ranked the fifth largest fire department in the U.S. and the department’s Aerial 2, stationed in Liberty City, is the busiest aerial-ladder-truck in North America for the third consecutive year. This ranking is a result of responding to 5,190 calls last year, 389 responses more than the second place aerial from Denver, CO and 650 calls more than the third-ranked aerial in San Francisco, CA.

Simply Healthcare Plans, a Coral Gablesbased Florida licensed health maintenance organization that serves Medicaid and Medicare members, recently donated $10,000 to the Centro Mater Foundation. The employee/corporate gift provides

critical funding that will ensure that needy children attend Centro Mater’s summer camp program. For 45 years, Centro Mater has provided care, education, nourishment, health services and after school programs to children in Miami-Dade of every race, faith and nationality from ages 6 weeks to 12 years.

In an effort to raise awareness and protect pets in the community against Canine Distemper and Parvo Virus, Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department offers low cost DHPP vaccines daily at the shelter located at 7401 NW 74 St. in Medley. Too few dogs and puppies are vaccinated against Distemper and Parvo in the community. Infectious diseases are a serious problem in the county and not just a shelter problem. Unfortunately, pets infected with Distemper or Parvo enter the shelter population weekly and that is why pet owners are encouraged to see their veterinarians for regular vaccinations and preventive care or come to the shelter for core vaccinations, such as rabies and DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Parainfluenza). Miami-Dade County Animal Services

Department offers low cost ($5) Distemper/Parvo vaccination for dogs over 8 weeks of age. Canine Distemper and Parvo Virus can be fatal in unvaccinated puppies and dogs. These viruses are becoming more dangerous in the community and vaccination is essential. MiamiDade Animal Services recommends all pet owners to regularly vaccinate, identify and sterilize their pets. Other services provided at the shelter are rabies vaccination, microchipping, pet adoptions and sale of dog license tags. For additional information and services, please visit <www.miamidade.gov/animals>. Each year, Animal Services receives more than 30,000 pets. It is the goal to find loving homes for the shelter pets and to reunite them with their families. The award honors an individual who has demonstrated longterm commitment and dedication to improving the lives of the elderly in the community. “I give credit for this award to the hundreds of faith-based volunteers who provide free services to seniors in their homes,” Rev. Young said. “Congregational Health provides the training that enables our faith-community partners to share the care in an organized way.” The Alliance for Aging provides a broad range of resources and access to quality

services for older adults and their families in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. The organization funds home- and communitybased services that help keep people at home and out of institutional care. The Department of Congregational Health at Baptist Health South Florida has been serving the faith communities of the Miami-Dade area since 1997 through a faith-health coalition that has now grown to 144 partnering congregations. The core programs of health education, health screenings, care teams, faith-health support groups and bereavement support reflect the vision and mission of Baptist Health South Florida. Baptist Health South Florida is the largest faith-based, not-for-profit healthcare organization in the region. Baptist Health includes Baptist Hospital, Baptist Children’s Hospital, South Miami Hospital, Homestead Hospital, Doctors Hospital, Mariners Hospital, West Kendall Baptist Hospital, Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute and Baptist Outpatient Services.

March Is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month BY SONIA MARTINEZ, RPH

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, when considering cancers, which affect both men and women. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with advancing age. More than 90% of cases occur in people aged 50 or older. According to the Centers for Disease Control, if everyone aged 50 years old or older were screened regularly, as many as 60% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be avoided. Screening can detect colorectal cancer early when treatment works best, or find precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum, which can be removed before they turn into cancer. Some studies show that increased physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight may decrease the risk for colorectal cancer. Researchers are examining the role of certain supplements, such as calcium, vitamin D, and selenium, in preventing colorectal cancer.
