Wine, Women and Shoes raises nearly $450K to benefit MCH BY JEREMY KATZMAN

More than 450 ladies slipped into their stilettos and joined together at the sold out second annual Wine, Women and Shoes Presented by Elizabeth Spill for a day of shopping and fun with the common purpose of supporting world-class pediatric healthcare. Guests from throughout South Florida gathered at Coral Gables Country Club on Feb. 7 not only to raise their glasses, but raise nearly $450,000 to benefit the children and families at Miami Children’s Hospital, which nearly doubled the amount raised at the inaugural event. “We are proud to announce that after 150 Wine Women & Shoes events produced throughout the country over the past eight years, Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation’s event in only its second year has raised more than any single Wine Women and Shoes event in history,” said Elaine Honig, Wine, Women and Shoes founder and president. Guests were treated to a sophisticated day of wine tasting, a silent auction featuring lavish trips and experiences as well as a fashion marketplace and a fashion show presented by Neiman Marcus Coral Gables. Event co-chair and CBS4 anchor Shannon Hori once again served as emcee. Joined by her fellow co-chairs, Criselda Breene and Carola Pimentel, Hori called upon the women in the audience to donate to Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Miami Children’s Hospital is here for my family because of people like you,” Hori said. “This event sold out two months ago because you care about our children and I encourage everyone in the community not to take this precious gem for granted and donate to help fund world-class children’s healthcare in our backyard.” In observance of February’s Heart Month, guests had the opportunity to hear from

Vanessa Martinez, whose 19-month-old daughter Luna’s life was saved by the Miami Children’s Hospital cardiac team. Luna also made a special appearance on stage. “I feel so lucky to have a hospital like Miami Children’s in our community, because if it was not for their incredible doctors and staff, Luna would not be here today,” Martinez said. “Luna is a real miracle. Through events like this one and donations of supporters, this incredible hospital can continue to make miracles for families like ours.” Three fashionistas were awarded with Neiman Marcus gift certificates for winning a shoe contest. Andrea Noboa won “Best Stiletto,” Priya Panjabi won “Best Classic” and Barbara Becker came home with the prize for “Best Overall” shoes. Shoe judges included CBS4 entertainment reporter Lisa Petrillo, 2012 Best Overall winner Alison Kunkel and Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation president and CEO Lucy Morillo-Agnetti. “I’m very excited that we are able to bring together women of all generations for philanthropy, friendship and fun,” Morillo-Agnetti said. “When it comes to our children, we only want the best. Miami Children’s Hospital is about providing the best healthcare of the children of our community and across the world.” The luncheon also was highlighted by the “Shoe Guys” who showed off the latest ladies fashions on a silver platter, literally. U. Miami Hurricanes host Miracle League kids game BY LISA MAYS

March has been a busy month for players of the Miracle League of MiamiDade. The Miracle League kids played a special game on the field at UM’s Mark Light Field on Saturday, Mar. 9. Hurricanes head coach Jim Morris and the Hurricanes baseball team wanted to be involved in this project and offered their time and expertise to buddy the special needs children of the Miracle League. “Through the support of the University of Miami and other prestigious organizations in Miami Dade County, we have been able to raise a great awareness for our project,” said Miracle League co-founder Keith Reilly. “We now need the community’s financial support to begin building our field this year.” Coach Morris is a supporter of the Miracle League and encourages his players to give back to the community. Stephen Pugh, UM assistant director of marketing, donated specially designed

players’ uniform shirts for the game to make the day extra special for the kids. The Hurricanes also have invited the Miracle League to be a part of the Saturday, Mar. 23, game against Virginia

Tech. UM will honor the Miracle League players, announcing their names over the PA as they take the field for the national anthem with the Hurricanes players.

As part of the ongoing fundraising efforts, the Miracle League invited several philanthropic supporters in the community to attend the game. Many, including Miami’s own Marc Buoniconti of the Miami Project, came out to Mark Light Field to cheer on the kids. After seeing the struggles these children face and the joy they experienced in the two-inning game, Buoniconti expressed his commitment to supporting the project and his desire to help build theMiracle League field. “I’d like to thank the University of Miami and head coach Jim Morris for their support of our disabled children,” said Sandy Robinson of the Miracle League. “Their willingness to share the field at Mark Light with the kids means so much to them and their families. It’s truly an unforgettable experience for our Miracle League players.” Check out the Miracle League on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ MiracleLeagueOfMiamiDade) to see photos from recent games and see upcoming game dates. UM students design free ad campaigns for non-profits BY IVETTE M. YEE

More than 100 college students recently pulled an all-nighter — with a philanthropic twist. During the fourth annual “PhilADthropy” event on Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9, University of Miami School of Communication students provided free advertising and public relations services to 16 South Florida nonprofit organizations in just 25 hours, creating materials such as vibrant advertising, buzz-worthy viral videos, cool websites and more. PhilADthropy began at 11 a.m. on Friday and lasted until noon on Saturday when final projects were unveiled to the nonprofits during a reception. This year, a record 207 organizations applied for help, up from just 11 when the event was established in 2009. Selected nonprofits included Easter Seals South Florida; the Parks Foundation

of Miami-Dade, and the Mystic Force Foundation, an organization working to find a cure for childhood cancer. PhilADthropy is organized annually by the school’s advertising program and hosted by AD Group, an advertising club for students. “We are beyond thrilled. We feel like we went to a New York ad agency with an unlimited budget,” said Susie Hansen, of Abandoned Pet Rescue, one of South Florida’s largest no-kill animal shelter that through PhilADthropy received a glossy new brochure, website makeover advice, and several vibrant posters spotlighting the cute puppies and kittens the organization saves each day. The event drew 133 student volunteers who, led by UM faculty and industry professionals, put into practice the skills they have learned in the classroom. “I was expecting maybe a flyer or two, UM advertising major Monique Beaupre, 18, presents a slogan and visuals she and a team of students created during PhilADthropy to bring awareness to the not-profit organization, Guitars Over Guns. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

but I’m walking out with so much more to make people aware of our organization. The students surpassed anything that I could have ever imagined,” said Bianca Caviglia, president and COO of Guitars Over Guns, an after-school mentoring program that pairs at-risk youths with professional musicians who serve as mentors using popular music to connect with the adolescents and help them overcome the negative influences in their lives. UM students created an entire branding campaign for Guitars Over Guns — complete with a new logo, advertisements, social media, business cards, and other promotional materials. “I’m still recovering from working 25 hours straight,” said Katelyn Murray, 21, an advertising student who has taken part in the event each year. “But when you hand over the work that you’ve spent all night creating and see just how grateful the non-

profits are, it’s worth it, and it’s why I come back every year.” “The event was a huge success,” added Meryl Blau, a UM advertising professor and founder of the event. “The students put their heart and souls into it and you could tell from the work they produced. They did a fantastic job, everyone had a lot of fun, and the nonprofits were so happy with the results.” PhilADthropy was sponsored by Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Pasha’s, Conill, Sergio’s Family Restaurants, Titan Reprographics, URAWk Energy Bars, ZICO Coconut Water, popchips, LIME Fresh Mexican Grill at Dadeland, SapientNitro, Ronin Advertising Group, Distraction Magazine, TCBY, and Lionsden Creative Inc. Local professional can teach you how to Improv Yourself BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Improv is being used to help business people overcome their fear of speaking in front of groups. Carey Kane, founder of Improv Yourself Communications, is offering workshops and classes to help companies train their employees in better presentation skills. “We teach professional how to think better on their feet,” Kane said. “We also teach them how to speak from a place of confidence, so that their clients feel at ease.” The goal of the classes is to boost productivity through communicating better both within the company and out to the world. “You are making the work more enjoyable because you’re communicating better,” she said “That brings clients in and boosts the bottom line.” Kane began teaching the classes part-time as evening courses in 2005. Throughout that time, her dream was to teach the courses as a full-time venture. “We do tailor a workshop to the needs of each company,” Kane said. “Among our array of workshop options, we offer one tailored to women professionals and women attorneys. We also offer one-on-one public speaking coaching.” Improv Yourself has been offering the workshops since April. Their clients include Crispin Porter + Bogusky and Antonia Canero PA, a Brickell Avenue law firm. The classes were developed after years of being in professions that required public speaking. Kane grew up in Pinecrest and left to attend college at Northwestern. After college, she worked for Teach for America and non-profits including Breakthrough Miami. Her ability to stand in front of others and speak comfortably came from her years in acting classes. “When I took acting classes I didn’t plan on “I’m going to use that for public speaking

skills,” Kane said. The workshops have paid off for attendees. Kane said one of the attorneys who took her evening courses was asked by his senior partners what he was doing that had improved not only his litigation skills but his interpersonal skills. Kane said a popular misconception about Improv is that you have to be funny. “Stand up comedy is when you need to be funny,” she said. “The courses are not about being funny but they are enjoyable. You’re anchoring the learning in fun.” When someone is going in front of the class doing Improv, Kane helps them through the presentation through gentle side coaching. “I teach people how to not undermine themselves,” she said. “Improv helps with so many skills.” One of those skills is collaboration. “You build brick by brick,” she said. “Your partner adds the mortar, and you add the brick.” Although Improv teaches you to be in the moment, it doesn’t mean that she advocates an undisciplined approach to work. She comes from a corporate culture but likes to think outside the box and help others to release their creativity. Kane’s work has caught the attention of not only companies but ABC News. “ABC News came out a couple of months ago and they covered a class and afterward they interviewed students about how it helped them with their careers,” she said. When she went into business full-time she took on a partner, Israel Maya, who was one of her first Improv Yourself students. “When enough attorneys and bankers told us, you’ve got to do this, I knew enough to approach him,” she said. “He’s an outstanding teacher as well.” For information, call 305-968-6502 or go online to <www.improvyourselfnow.com>.

MCCJ celebrates diversity, honors community leaders BY DINA ALLENDE

There are those in South Florida who believe in making every second count for the good of their city. Six of those individuals exemplify the meaning of creating an inclusive community and therefore were honored during the annual MCCJ Humanitarian Awards Gala at the Four Seasons Hotel on Saturday, Mar. 2. This inspirational evening has become a highlight of the season. Receiving the prestigious Silver Medallions were honorees Merrett Stierheim, Ruth Shack, T. Willard Fair and Peter Dolara. In addition, MCCJ posthumously honored Tony Goldman and awarded the Clergy Medallion to Rabbi Gary Glickstein. Since 1946, MCCJ has recognized leaders in the business, religious and corporate community by presenting them with this coveted medallion. This year’s outstanding leaders have demonstrated extraordinary humanitarian efforts, which mirror MCCJ’s mission of creating an inclusive community. More than 20 past recipients also attended the gala, including Tony Argiz, Alberto Carvalho, Al Dotson, Richard Fain,

Deborah Hoffman, George Knox, David Lawrence Jr., Gepsie Metellus and Rev. Dr. Patrick O’Neill. Young community voices by Notre

Dame D’Haiti, Our Lord’s Youth Choir, performed. WPLG Local 10 anchor Calvin Hughes hosted the event along with Patricia Thorpe, board chair, and Hilarie

Bass, dinner chair. The invocation was given by Rev. Priscilla Felisky Whitehead, former pastor of Church by the Sea. To conclude the main portion of the evening, a touching Unity Candle Ceremony was conducted by various clergy of all denominations and Rabbi Solomon Schiff. As this took place, guests raised their “unity glow sticks” in the spirit of togetherness. Archbishop of Miami, Thomas Wenski, completed the dinner with the benediction. Following the awards, guests moved to an after party where they were treated to champagne, cordials and the energizing sounds of a deejay, who had the crowd doing the electric slide. MCCJ was founded in Miami in 1935 as the Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews. It creates a safe haven for dialog, trains inclusive leaders and promotes understanding for all faiths, races and cultures through education, advocacy and conflict resolution. It hosts the oldest interfaith clergy dialog in the United States and presents prejudice reducing programs in local high schools, among other activities. The NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association has announced its 2013 Baseball Hall of Fame class, which includes Stephen Hertz, former coach of Miami Dade College. This year’s inductees include former coaches Donald Green of Jefferson State Community College (AL), Hertz, and Jim Walker of College of Southern Idaho. The 2013 class also includes longtime NJCAA Division I World Series Tournament vice chair and volunteer Bruce Hill of Grand Junction, CO. The four inductees will be honored at the pre-tournament banquet of the 2013 NJCAA Division I World Series on May 24 in Grand Junction. Hertz spent a quarter century as the head baseball coach at Miami Dade College. During his tenure, his teams finished as either the champions or runners-up of the Southern Conference 19 times (10 championships / 9 runners-up). Even more impressive, his teams advanced to the Region 8/Gulf District tournament 19 times during his 26 seasons as head coach. His 2001 squad won the Gulf District title, advancing to the JUCO World Series where they finished fifth. Miami Dade was ranked consistently in the top 10 nationally under Hertz and he was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year 10 times and Region 8/Gulf District Coach of the Year once. He retired in 2010 with a career NJCAA mark of 945-325 (.750). He is one of just 36 coaches in NJCAA history with 900 or more career victories. Including a combined 15 years as the head coach at Coral Park and Southridge high schools in Miami, Hertz’s all-time coaching record stands at 1,245-420 (.748) over 41 years. More than 150 players tutored by Hertz signed professional contracts, including four currently in Major League Baseball —

Placido Polonco (MDC 1993-94); Andres Torres (MDC 1997-98); Jon Albaladejo (MDC 2000-01), and Jesus Feliciano (MDC 1998). Hertz also has coached at the international level. He helped Team USA win gold at the 1999 Pan American Maccabi Games as an assistant coach. Returning to the same tournament in 2003, Hertz was head coach of Team USA and led the squad to the gold medal. In 2007, he led the Tel Aviv Lightning to the semifinals of the inaugural season of the Israel Professional Baseball League. A notable baseball player during his time, he signed a professional contract with the Houston Col 45’s in 1963 and made his MLB debut that year at the age of 19 — the eighth youngest player that season. In the minor leagues he twice was an All-Star (1965 Western Carolina League and 1966 Florida State League). He concluded his professional career in 1969 at the Triple-A level with the New York Mets affiliate in Tidewater, VA. Hertz is a member of the following halls of fame: Florida College System Activities Association (2007), Coral Park High School (2006) and Miami High School (1985). Since 1938 the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has been the governing body of two-year college athletics, offering athletic and academic opportunities to college students. Now entering its 75th anniversary, the NJCAA is the second largest national intercollegiate athletic organization in the United States with over 500 member schools in 43 states. Each year 60,000 student-athletes compete in one of 28 different sports and the organization sponsors 48 national championship events and nine football bowl games. NJCAA Headquarters has been located in Colorado Springs, CO, since 1985. For more information visit online at <www.njcaa.org>.

HistoryMiami names leadership team to guide new phase of expansion BY LEE STEPHENS

HistoryMiami recently announced that its board of trustees has named a team of executives to lead it in a critical new phase of development. “Hiring a leadership ‘team’ of senior executives is a bold move and a clear reflection of our board’s resolve to move HistoryMiami to prominence in the city’s cultural community,” said Faith Mesnekoff, chair of the HistoryMiami Board of Trustees. “HistoryMiami will meet our region’s need for an institution that tells the stories with skill and passion.” Ramiro A. Ortiz, a well-known South Florida business leader, has become president and CEO, and Stuart A. Chase, an experienced museum executive with a distinguished record of management and community involvement, is serving as museum director and chief operating oficer, effective Mar. 4. Dr. Michael N. Rosenberg, immediate past chair of the HistoryMiami Board of Trustees and chair of the Search Committee, said, “Ramiro and Stuart bring a combination of expertise, vision and commitment that will be critical to our success. As a team, they will accelerate the development of HistoryMiami — both physically and programmatically — and lead us in fulfilling our mission to make the past and future of our city accessible to all Miamians and visitors.” As president/CEO, Ortiz will lead HistoryMiami and provide the strategic direction and management to guide the institution and the Cultural Plaza expansion and revitalization. Working closely with Ortiz, Chase will enhance and manage daily operations and programs. “These are exciting times for cultural organizations in Miami-Dade County, and I am enthused about the opportunity to lead HistoryMiami,” Ortiz said. “I am confident that with the support of the community, the board of trustees, the new museum director and our loyal staff, we can raise the profile

of HistoryMiami as one of the most relevant cultural, civic, and educational institutions in Miami-Dade County.” Prior to joining HistoryMiami, Ortiz was president and COO of BankUnited and SunTrust Bank Miami and has over 40 years of banking experience and civic involvement in South Florida. “I look forward to the unlimited opportunities that lie ahead for HistoryMiami and engaging with the energy of the South Florida region,” Chase said. “I am determined to continue to strengthen our community relationships and utilize the unique collections, exhibitions and programs at HistoryMiami to provide a solid foundation to further serve residents, South Florida visitors and museum guests, with some new twists and turns as we share the unique stories of our special heritage.” Chase is an accomplished chief executive and community leader. Most recently, he served as CEO at 1Berkshire Inc. and its affiliates, the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, the Berkshire Visitors Bureau and Berkshire Creative Economy Council, in order to advance economic growth and development in the Berkshires. The news of the appointments comes at a pivotal time in the institution’s growth. HistoryMiami is poised to expand into the facility being vacated by the Miami Art Museum at the end of the year and, in the near future, create a structure joining the two. The project also includes: revitalizing the plaza; renovating the two existing buildings; developing new permanent exhibitions; expanding collections storage space; adding more classroom spaces for school and camp programs; enhancing public areas of the Archives and Research Center and enlarging temporary exhibitions spaces. The HistoryMiami footprint will expand from 40,000 to 100,000 square feet and will include a new main entrance, atrium, retail store and theater. Visit online at historymiami.org.

Zoo Miami’s fun new website geared toward children, parents, educators BY CINDY CASTELBLANCO

Zoo Miami and the Zoological Society of Florida have announced the launch of <www.funzoomiami.org>, a state-of-theart website created for students, parents and educators to encourage learning, promote wildlife conservation, and inspire a stronger interest in science. <www.Funzoomiami.org> is a colorful, vibrant, eye-catching experience which covers the world’s geographic regions, animals, habitats, adaptation, and conservation efforts. Easy to navigate, website visitors will be engaged in the many interactive games, crafts, fun facts, etc. It also contains teacher and parent sections. A simple link transports the reader to <www.zoomiami.org>, Zoo Miami’s main website. “We invite you to get closer to the animals at <www.funzoomiami.org>,” said Benjamin H. Pingree, Zoological Society of Florida president and CEO. “Aside from games, activities, and photos, this will be a valuable resource for many students completing projects and homework related to wildlife.” The goals and objectives of this innovative site, which was supported in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), are to create a fun and interactive website that encourages learning for children, fami-

lies, and educators; develop a platform for advancing institutional programs and partnerships by increasing outreach efforts to underserved populations; engage students in an educational environment which employs a scientific method to encourage learning; provide opportunities for students to develop necessary skills for critical thinking, problem-solving, and much more. Experts in the education field, conservation, and animal science were involved intimately in the site’s development. One feature of the website is a pop-up survey that appears at login and logoff that affords the user the option to provide feedback. The survey results will help the zoo determine who is using the site and why; whether it is a fun and interactive learning experience; allow for input regarding satisfaction and recommendations for improvements. Once the surveys are collected and evaluated by a professional consultant, the results will be used to make necessary improvements to the website. Zoo Miami is located at 12400 SW 152 St. General zoo admission is $15.95 per adult and $11.95 per child (3-12), plus tax. Children under 3, zoo members and parking are free. Loose change makes difference benefiting three local charities BY SANDY RODRIGUEZ

Magic City Casino, Miami’s first casino to offer Las Vegas style slot machines, donated a total of more than $15,000 to three local charities in the opening weeks of 2013. The funds donated were generated from loose change left inside slot machines by patrons and collected throughout 2012 by the casino. The three charitable recipients were Best Buddies of Southwest Miami Senior High School ($7,000), the Miami Rescue Mission ($7,000) and the Officer Duncan Kidson (ODK) Food Pantry ($3,675). The organizations selected were nominated and voted upon by Magic City Casino’s managing directors. “As a family-owned local casino, Magic City Casino is happy to support those organizations doing good in our community, including the Miami Rescue Mission, Best Buddies of Southwest Miami Senior High School and the Officer Duncan Kidson Food Pantry,” said Scott Savin, chief operating officer of Magic City Casino. “We are happy to use small change left behind for a greater good and to see the value it will bring to the community.” Pairing high school students and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Best Buddies allows students to have friends outside of their special education classrooms. Best Buddies cultivates these one-to-one friendships by introducing programs to public and private high schools such as the one at Southwest Miami Senior High and breaking the barrier that too often separates those with disabilities from those without. “This donation will allow us to purchase

technological tools for our students and teachers including laptops and iPads,” said Celeste Sadler, National Board Certified Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Teacher at Southwest Miami Senior High School. “We are so appreciative for the help this lends us. Thank you, Magic City Casino.” The Miami Rescue Mission has provided comprehensive services to the homeless and needy of Miami-Dade and Broward counties since 1922. In 2012, the Miami Rescue Mission provided more than 850,000 meals and over 340,000 nights of emergency shelter among other services. The Officer Duncan Kidson (ODK) Food Pantry in South Miami-Dade County was opened to distribute food to needy families in the area and provide spiritual counseling. The food pantry was named after Officer Duncan Kidson, the son of one of Bay Community Church’s founding members, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2010. As a decorated Miami-Dade Police Officer, Officer Duncan Kidson served his community for nine years. The amount donated, $3,675, will allow the ODK Food Pantry to distribute enough food for three months. Magic City Casino features 800 Las Vegas-style slot machines, 19-table Poker Room, outdoor concert amphitheater, multi-purpose indoor venue, seasonal live greyhound racing and multiple food and beverage outlets, among other state-of-theart amenities. The casino is open every day (Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 a.m.; Friday and Saturday,10 a.m. to 5 a.m.). For more information, visit online at <www.magiccitycasino.com>.
